Fantasy Roundtable – When’s Right To Draft Wright?
This week’s Fantasy Roundtable is hosted by Adam Ronis at Strong Island’s most awesome paper - Newsday.com.
THE TOPIC: Where would you draft David Wright in a mid-season league and why?
I veered toward the most bearish in the group – saying I’d take him somewhere in picks 20-30. Grey put him at #14 in his midseason fantasy baseball rankings. Click on the link above to see what some other Fantasy Bloggers thought…

I don’t think I would consider Wright much at all in the first 3 rounds, or rather would let some other owner involved draft him too early and fare with that particular result. This severe lack of power this year, the AAA line-up he’s playing with, the franchise that only sinks further away from the playoff race with each passing week – factors such as these would have me looking elsewhere, for a more productive player that I would be more comfortable with.
I can’t believe this Chuck Anderson had him ranked 7th (!) and ahead of Teixeira among other players (!!). Thanks for ensuring I never visit your website ever, guy.

I was in last place in my 12 team league when I traded Wright and McCann for Utley. I sit in 5th place now and it has a lot to do with Utley. If I held onto Wright I don’t think I would be close to the top.
I still believe Wright has a ton of value but I would expect only expect 8HR’s out of him for the rest of the year. I would have to draft him just behind a guy like Youk… Youk has more value because he is a multi-position guy, has more pop and plays for a better more consistent offense.
I would have to draft Wright near the end of the 3rd round.

(if miggy don’t qualify)he’s still the best 3B to own.
July 21st, 2009 at 4:27 pm
so you guys are just talking about this year?
where do you think he’ll go next year?
@Tony Y: I think he’ll be a late first/early 2nd round draft pick next year.
July 21st, 2009 at 4:56 pm
@Grey: Yeah i can see it being one of those “OHHHHH HE HAD A BAD YEAR, I’LL LET HIM SLIDE GUYS” that pans out as the MVP.
I mean he’s still david wright… Where the power went who knows, but batting half the season without Beltran and Delgado has been rough on the stats too….

@Tony Y: Great point

also, no reyes to drive in….their team is horrible and it looks like hes going to cry after every post-game interview….I actually feel bad for a guy who is making 8 figures a year

Hanley/Verlander/Papelbon or Quentin/Ortiz/Alexei/Sherrill/Gregg?
@Sos: Hanley side.

July 21st, 2009 at 6:32 pm

I want to trade José Reyes for Justin Morneau in a keeper league
jose Reyers is like owning Josh Hamilton – nice upside but I need a players that I can depend on every game – I think Morneau numbers speak for themself – let the other team worry about Reyers – the league thinks I am trading away the best player that ever played the game grey they are all upset – the two teams making this trade are both about 20 games below 500 so who are we hurting – what is your view here!
@matthole: I’d take Johan.
@Maximus: Around the 4th probably still a lot of baseball left in the season.
@Mr Baseball: I’d take Morneau.

I’m sitting on Ianetta at catcher, and his average is killing me, along with his 1 HR in his last 20+ games. Should I continue to just ignore the catcher spot, or maybe add Montero who has been hot for a couple of weeks but may lose time soon?
@Josh: Add him if you think it’ll help your team’s average.

Manny and Shields or Haren and Holliday?
@anon: Manny side, but very close. Manny side on assumption Haren’s 2nd half dive, um, dives.

thanks, you replied quicker than I could hit F5!

Tejada Price for AssCab E-Jax?
@Josh: I’d take Jackson’s side.
July 21st, 2009 at 8:08 pm
@Grey: Really? I figure Tejada is a surer thing at SS, and cabrera’s due for some regression. Leyland has been doing his best Dusty Baker impression in handling Jackson, which has me worried about him going forward. Think I should ask for a better pitcher than Price in return? Or just steer clear of Tejada?
Thanks for all the help!
@Josh: It’s close. So close I almost went with the other side, but when in doubt I’d want Jackson over Price for this year. Tejada is better than Asdrubal, but Tejada’s not enough to push it over.

Finally, an offer for Wright! Dude offers me Pineiro for Wright!!! This guy is slowly losing ground. Went from 1st to 2nd, and now very close to 3rd. Feel like responding with Wright for Halladay. I could try for Cantu & Street for Wright, but can’t get past the fact that he’s still David Wright, a late 1st rounder next year?

Hey Grey or anyone, the trade from comment #10, is it veto worthy? I got the Hanley side and there is all sorts of uproar about it. To save you the scroll, it was Hanley/Verlander/Papelbon for Quentin/Ortiz/Alexei/Sherrill/Gregg. I’ve never run into this sort of thing with dudes freaking out and veto-ing. I personally think to veto is loser-ish so it’s doubly annoying.
@Robert: As if you need me to say it, I wouldn’t trade him for Pineiro.
@Sos: I think vetoing is loserish too. It’s not veto worthy, but it’s pretty lopsided for you.

Thanks Grey. Let me ask you this: Mike Cameron was just let go tonight and I have been searching for some power. If Cameron is going to stay in the 5th spot, do you think he can provide some pop? I am at 39 moves with a max of 50 for the season(never again).
July 21st, 2009 at 8:50 pm
@Grey: Thanks for the input. I don’t want everyone freaking out and thinking I’m trying to pull one over, but I made the offer and he accepted. He then told me another owner made an offer for the exact three players the day before and it was much worse than mine so whatevs.
@Robert: Those max moves leagues are terrible. That’s the fun of fantasy baseball. Dropping and adding guys… I wouldn’t grab Cameron.

Thanks.

Grey, baby,
Do you like Dempster or Wells going forward (assuming Dempster is indeed going to start next week)? I know Dempster’s the bigger name, but this Wells kid has been surprisingly good. My only concern is that he doesn’t K a ton of guys, so he may not be able to continue the 3-flat ERA and 1.15 WHIP.
What say you?
July 21st, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Grey, glad to hear you’re against the max moves leagues. My league adopted that this year, and I’m already four moves over the limit. I pay .50 a move. I’ll let them take it out of my winnings. It hurts the guys that go looking for vulture saves and helps the toolbag that takes a closer in the 5th round (unless that closer is Soria or Lidge- wait, it still doesn’t help those toolbags, but it angers me nonetheless!).
@jbatkins: I’d want Wells going forward, but that’s onyl because I don’t like Dempster.
@Tom: Yup.

Shields @ CWS and Maholm vs. Mil
I think Shields is safe but would you bench Maholm?
@G: It’s not a bad start for Maholm. Risky, but every start for Maholm is.

Dump Martin for Montero?
July 22nd, 2009 at 6:04 am
Grey, My team is really lacking in runs and stolen bases. I sent a few proposals to the guy in our league who had BJ Upton. He comes back at me and asks for Miguel Cabrera straight up for BJ Upton. He also throws in the comment that Cabrera is the only player I have that he would want(keep in mind I am 1st place in our league and he is 7th out of 12) What would be your reaction to this guy. My reaction of course was to quickly turn down to trade and berate his entire team. Was I out of line?
@Ruah: I wouldn’t.
July 22nd, 2009 at 2:44 pm
@Byron: Is this a keeper league, with him playing for next year? That’s what I’m running into now, every trade I propose is counter-offered trying to steal Jose Reyes, it’s frustrating.
