This was author and innovator Lou Poulas’ introduction, “While Grey and Rudy do a great job of breaking down everything you need to know for 2012 fantasy baseball, drafts still trip me up. I’ve been lamenting my inadequacies from the past 3+ years which resulted in an inordinate amount of time number crunching in Excel. My quest – a draft day “war room” that allowed me to keep my finger on the pulse of the league while minimizing my effort. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to keep track of more things as opposed to fewer.”
Presenting the free 2012 Fantasy Baseball War Room. It’s an auto-updating Excel workbook that keeps track of all the necessaries:
• Color Coded Dashboard that “crosses off” selected players.
• Team by Team analysis of players taken, players left.
• Real time projected totals, along with real time projected league standings.
• Goal Tracking Dashboard
Unfortunately, Lou and Simply Fred (who took the reins last year) were inundated with the real world but were kind enough to allow me to make updates for 2012. My quick two cents: I added notes 4+5 on the Notes Tab under user steps. It just explains how to add a player and a note about when the pitching and hitting totals update. The pitching and hitting totals look like they are broken until each team has at least one hitter and one pitcher. I have been a fantasy baseballer for a long time. The first team I drafted my ace pitcher was suppose to be Steve Stone. He had won the Cy Young the year before. He sucked the year I had him. When I ran out of money I bought two cheap young pitchers, Fernando Valenzuela and Mike Norris. I have been hooked ever since. The only reason I tell you how long I have been doing this is to support the following compliment. Razzball is the best source for fantasy baseball information that I have ever used. The combination of humor and analysis is unmatched. I read it daily but do not comment often. I thought I would update the War Room as I hope it helps the site in some small way. I did not spend a lot of time debugging the sheet. I figured the daily posters will do that for us, the Razzball community. I will look for your comments to see if there’s anything I can help with.
This year’s version has been slightly customized to Razzball:
- The Players page lists players in order of Grey’s top 300 for 2012 fantasy baseball with Grey’s projections (and his auction values on the auction draft worksheet). FanGraphs stepped up to the plate and graciously provided projections for players unranked by Grey.
- AB (At-Bats, i.e. playing time) provided by FanGraphs.
- Goal Tracking has been pre-loaded with temp targets for “What it takes to win a 12 team fantasy baseball league.”
- The “Dashboard” displays players by position in order of Grey’s rankings.
- The ‘Team Rank’ box (League Standings) is limited to no more than 12 teams. Projected ‘Batting Totals’ and ‘Pitching Totals’ extend up to 25 teams.
- Up to 25 players may be drafted per team (allocations set by the user via the ‘User Input’ page).
- I have left the spreadsheet ‘unprotected’ so you may overlay with your own projections if you like.
The value of the War Room, for me, is to load the picks of a draft to determine which categories I am falling short in. In this manner, I can keep adding/deleting targeted players until I consistently get a strong team.
Click on the ‘Notes’ tab for instructions for how to load league team names, etc. Put questions and comments in this post and I’ll do my best to answer them.

(UPDATE 2/21: 1. – You can add more than 12 teams – Just had to change a setting. If you want to rank more than 12 teams you need to insert rows to the bottom of the projected Batting and Pitching Ranks. Then go to the cells for the categories and change the range of cells that it is ranking. IE. The formula for ranking runs in cell B27 is currently RANK(C71,C$71:C$82,1) – Just change it to RANK(C71,C$71:C$86,1) if you have added 4 rows to make it a 16 team league. Do the same for HRs RBI SB +avg. + the pitching categories. 2. Corrected the misspellings 3. I color coded the tiers in the catchers. It does not look that good but it may be helpful. You can color code your tiers by changing the color of the letters. Do not change the color of the cells it breaks the cross off feature. Just change the color of the lettering. 4. Fixed the formatting in a few bad cells.

Right click either link the Snake draft or Auction
Click on Save Target as
Add .xlsx to File Name – so it is 2012-War-Room-Auction.xlsx
Change the save as type box from Compressed to All files
Hit Save Then Open

Okay, so I had not used this in previous years. First to answer Jerry, you just click the download button in the link. You don’t have to import anything into word. What you maybe wondering is it is currently in xlsx format, so older versions of word are not compatible. You can use this if that is the case: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=3
As to using it, I didn’t understand the notes until I read them a few times. There is tab 5 (user input). You simply name teams there. You can use your friends’ team names, or just use “team x”. After that, go to the Players tab. there is a drop down with the team names in the “owner” column. pick the team that gets each player. If you are just looking at your team players, you can do that too. Third, goto the War Room tab. This has the list of players you have selected, and also data analysis of your team and the other teams too.
I first tried to enter my team into user input, but that didn’t work. I also took a little while to find that the owner column was a drop down. Once I had those figured out, it made a lot more sense.

When I download this file it only has a bunch of folders with .xml files. No .xlsx files or Excel formats. Any ideas?

Thsi sounds cool and all, but have no idea how to open the files, the author said its an excel file, the poster above said its a word file. The zip file has a whole bunch of .xml files in there and I have no clue what to open or what im supposed to look at. What is the main file im supposed to open first and what program am I useing to open the file?

I actually said you don’t have to use word (or excel). However, I can click on the links and both give me a save as option for xlsx format (excel 2007 or later).
I don’t use office. I use openoffice.org calc program. I was able to save and open both links just fine. I was able to open it on firefox. Using IE, I get a zip file too. It works great in Firefox though. I just try not to use IE when possible.

OK I figured it out!
-Right click Save Target as…
-Under the Save as type drop down, choose all files
-Change the .zip to .xlsx, and BOOM! Your Excel file.

Two issues that I have come across so far:
1- When you add a player and his stats to the “Players” page (say Bryce Harper for example) and then put his name in a yellow slot on the Dashboard, that player does not show up in the War Room roster when drafted…any thoughts?
2- Say that the league is an 8 or a 10-team league. Is there a way to make the War Room scoring reflect ranks on a non-12-point-scale?

1.I started with last years sheet and I cut and pasted a lot of stats. I had to repair some cells to get them to total correctly. May have missed a few. You may want to try a different cell. I added him right below Guerrero on the players tab and right below Travis Snyder on the dashboard and it worked.
2. I am in a 21 team league so what i did was go to the War room tab where it displays projected Batting Ranks and in the cell under Runs,HRs,RBI’s and SB’s I changed the range in the formula in the cell. IE under runs for the first team which is cell B27 I changed the range to C$91 so it was Rank(c71,C$71:c$91,1)- cut+paste to the others. I did not design the sheet so I am sure there is a more graceful way to do this but it worked. You just adjust the range for the size of your league.

Note that the outfielders didn’t get crossed off as picked so I had to copy just the formatting over from shortstop which fixed it.

just wish there was a tutorial … for the slow learners .

I will tell you how I use it.
a. I start at the User input tab and put in the team names, number of batters and pitchers and team goals
b. To select a player go to players tab and click on the cell to the right of the players name. The drop down box will have the names of the teams. Just click on which team selected the player. That will cross the player off the dashboard and update the war room totals.
c. I love c
d. I have input every player but I usually don’t. I like to drink beer too much. If you do use CTL F when you are in the players tab and it will pop up a find box and help locate the players. I really like it for my keeper leagues. I put the keepers in before the draft and then print the sheets and cross off selections by hand. It does not help as much but is less work.
e. When you are done putting in your mock draft just select an empty cell in the owners row and copy and paste to all the cells that have owners listed. That wipes out all the selections. If you wish to save the results of the mock draft just do a save as on the spreadsheet and give it a different name.

If you do let me know how they work. I originally color-coded the dashboard by using different colored cells for different tiers. It broke the cross off feature. I did go back and change the color of the names – not the cells for the different tiers so you know when a tier ends. That seems to be working.

This looks like a fantastic tool, but one request for modifications for next year: if possible, some way to limit the player pool for AL and NL only leagues? You guys should talk to the guy at lastplayerpicked.com. He has an amazing dynamic pricing system set up, it’s just missing all your war room dashboard stuff. If you could somehow join forces, you’d probably have the best tool for drafting around. I’d happily pay for something like that.

It is not hard to seperate AL + NL players. I did it for a guy last year. I put AL or NL before the rank – Put the cursor on the 1 next to Cabrera and add AL before the 1 – do that for each player – use the sort and filter towards the top right hand side and sort it largest to smallest to list the NL on top. I think I added numbers to the players over 300 also

Do I have to enter every player I draft during the draft?
Does the software do that for me? Or do I just click somewhere, that adds the guy and we move on?

@Tony, Once you’ve entered your team name on the ‘User Input tab, click on a player name on the Players tab. You’ll see a dropdown. Click on that and select your team name from the dropdown.
Now look on the Dashboard tab against the player you selected. you’ll see it’s crossed out.
Now look on the ‘War Room’ tab under ‘Your Selected Players’…

I think during the draft you go to the “player” tab. When a player gets drafted, you clickon the box to the right of the player’s name, under the heading “owner.” Then you click on the arrow that appears, and a list of owners which you have input (or just your name if that’s all you want to track) drops down. You click on the owner that drafted that particular player, and it will be recorded.
That’s how I understand it, anyways.

I still have been unable to get a custom added player who is not on the original list to appear in the “your selected players” list in the War Room. I can list them as on my roster and they appear crossed out on the Dashboard…just not in the War Room.

Great work, guys. One question: is it possible to add players you haven’t ranked? I’m in a pretty deep league, very dynasty-oriented so younger guys get picked all the time. Can I just paste him and his stats into the Players tab and have it work out?
Also, it would be great if it computed auction values based on the number of teams. Thankfully it’s easy to do the math to convert 12-team values to 16-team.

When I add to team slots 13,14,15… on the user input page something isn’t registering. I can’t assign players to any of the teams in those slots and they don’t show up as options in the dropdown list. Anyone have any ideas?

I have been running a very similiar spreadsheet for about the last ten years. It is my most valuable tool.
I would suggest any new people using this to take a few dry runs with it. I play very deep auction leagues and time is an element. The fact this is still totally customizable is the shizz. This is a great gift that every reader on this page should take advantage of.

I found a pretty simple way to increase the number of teams. I haven’t played around with it too much to see whether the equations are all correct, but hopefully this will start people on the correct direction.
This assumes you are using the new version of excel. The principles should stay the same in older versions, but it wont be the same step for step.
Put in all the teams in your league under the user input tab, as you normally would. You’ll notice that any more teams you enter after 12 don’t show up on the ranks section of the War Room tab. To fix this portion of the sheet, simply highlight the row with the last team (starting from the team name to the left, and ending the highlight to the right on Team Rank). Then pull down on the box in order to copy these cells down for as many more teams after 12 you need. You may need to create space in between the batting and pitching per player areas.
The second portion that needs to be fixed is the ability to add the extra teams to the drop down menus in the Players tab. To do this, highlight the top cell in the Owner column (to the right of Miguel Cabrera) and go to the Data tab in Excel. Under Data Tools find the Data Validation option, and click Data Validation under the dropdown. Under the settings tab you should see Source, and it should say =$AY$1:$AY$12 Increase the 12 to however many teams you have, and, provided that you entered the team name into the user input tab, they should appear in the dropdown menu.
Hope this is helpful to everyone! This is certainly one of my favorite tools, and I appreciate the work that was put into it on all counts.

@Lava, For those of us using Open Office, or Libre Office, follow Lava’s instructions for the War Room tab. But to add extra teams to the drop down menus in the Players tab, select and highlight all the cells in the Owners column (starting to the right of Miguel Cabrera and ending at Gerado Parra), and go the Data menu in Open Office, find the Validity… option, click it and in the Source box on the Criteria tab it should say $AY$1:$AY$12. Change the 12 to the number of teams you need.
Don’t forget to do the same thing with the Owners column for the pitchers (highlight all cells from Hallady to Garcia)!

Is there an easy way to get it on Open Office to cross off the outfielders names? If not, it really isn’t a big deal, but it would make things a bit neater which never hurts after about 7 hours of a fantasy draft.

I think I know the answer to this from playing around in previous years, but there’s no simple way to add stat categories, is there? My league is 7×7, with H, OPS, K/BB, and QS added.

So I was able to change the league number to 15 teams, but when I started inputting the keepers, only the teams in slots 1-12 were able to register the player. Team 13, 14, and 15 produced an error message of “The value you entered in not from the required list”. How do I remedy this?

First off, this is awesome, and thanks so much for putting it together.
Secondly, if anyone is trying to link the players in the War Room spreadsheet to other spreadsheets (to add stats or modify projections, for example), there are a few name typos in the spreadsheet:
1. Rafael Furcal and Rafael Betancourt are spelled “Raphael”
2. Corey Hart is spelled “Corey”
3. Jayson Werth is spelled “Jason”
4. Shin-Soo Choo is spelled “Shin-Shoo”

9. Not a typo, but Michael Morse may be called “Mike Morse” in other spreadsheets.
There may be more, but those are the main ones I found. Remember that if you change any names in the spreadsheet, you have to change the names in both the “Players” sheet and the “Dashboard” sheet for the links to work properly.

If anyone puts together a spreadsheet, that includes the “player” listing from the war room, but expands it for additional players (using another sites projections or whatever). Please share.
In my deep AL / NL only leagues, there are a lot of players that aren’t included on this list.

I need a refresher. Last year when I tried this for the first time..I couldn’t see all the tabs at the bottom of the page. In fact, I didn’t know they were there until later on. I’ve downloaded the snake draft….but I don’t see a dashboard at all or a list of players by position. Can somebody remind me how to get to those pages..thanks

Was just briefly looking at the war room and noticed that Prince Fielder’s projected stats are not the same as Grey’s projections in the top 10.
Have not looked at one other player yet. The same stats are being used, right?

I don’t think it messes up any other parts of the spreadsheet (though I haven’t delved too deeply), but the ERA calc in column AH of the player tab looks to be incorrectly calculating total earned runs allowed by the pitcher. Shouldn’t be ERA times IP (**need to divide by 9)

Is there any way to expand the rosters to more than 23? I don’t know anything about coding or Excel gadgetry, so I’m not going to assume that this is easily done, but it would be great. Maybe have the option to go up to 40 players (since you’re kind of buddying up on this with Fangraphs and Ottoneu goes up to 40)?
Just a thought from a dude who doesn’t own any rosters smaller than 25.

Go to the User Input tab to change the number of batters per team and the numbers of pitchers. If you go above 16 pitchers or 16 hitters you will need to insert a few rows on the war room tab on line 25 to list more Batters and Pitchers on your selected team.

Hi Guys, i work in IT so I am always looking to tweak the spreadsheets so I offer this up to anyone who wants to use this for their War Room spreadsheets.
I had to split the Hitters and Pitchers to make it possible to reference with as little vba code as possible.
This version I am making available offers a few adjustments
1) A “Teams” sheet that is dynamically pulling drafted players to help keep track of who has drafted what.
2) The dashboard is completely dynamic so if you like to modify rankings it will automatically adjust the position rankings.
3) From using this in the past, you want to be on one sheet as much as possible so I made the dashboard the centerpoint and added the ability to draft directly from this sheet. You will notice a Player to Draft section which shows the currently selected player and below that you need to choose a team to draft that player to. From that point you can select the Draft button or a shortcut of “Ctrl + Q”. If a mistake was made you can clear the highlighted player or shortcut with “Ctrl + E”.
4) The dashboard shows rank as well as all other stats for selected player and top 5 hitters and pitchers available.
I have modified my sheet since my leagues only use 10 teams and use OPS instead of HR, but its easy to adjust that information.

I wouldn’t want to screw up any of the formulas or anything, but my league uses HR instead so it would be great to switch over to that.

That should be easy to add, but one thing you have to be aware (I learned after making additions the hard way) of when making modifications on the war room sheet is hidden columns. As long as you are mindful of that it will not be an issue.

@wallywojo, Just want to point out that by removing IP and AB from your formulas, you are going to get inaccurate values for team BA, ERA, and WHIP. A 2.5 ERA from a reliever who throws 60 innings carries the same weight as a starter who throws 200 in your spreadsheet.

First, your format modifications are great. I had to customize to make it work for 12 owners, but I think it makes the tool much more user friendly.
Second, how many stat changes did you make from the original spreadsheet? League and Santos shot to the top of the closer rankings after I built in a “player rater” formula and re-sorted the players. And they have much more optimistic numbers than the original spreadsheet.

The better way to use the macros is through their keyboard shortcuts of Ctrl-Q to draft and Ctrl-E to clear. I used this for my draft this sunday and could easily keep up with all the picks as well as preparing for my upcoming pick.

@Steve-O, sure, you will need to add the category on the player data sheets (Hitters, Pitchers), probably add those categories to the information box below player to draft on the dashboard, and the war room sheet. The War Room Sheet will be the most complicated as there are multiple places where additions need to be made and you will have to make a lot of formatting changes to make it look nice with the borders and coloring. The one thing i pointed out above for a similar question is to be mindful of hidden columns. When you start to make these mods just save as a copy the original in the event your warroom is not calculating things correctly you can just go back and correct the top most entries in each box and fill down. I’ve found that it really is a clean sheet meant for easy modification.

Any quick easy way to make it work for an 11 team league? I went to the User Tab and added another team, but that doesn’t seem to follow through to the other tabs’ drop boxes for team owner.
Also, many of the boxes on your dashboard have green triangles in them. (Inconsistency Error messages if I am remembering correctly.) If I “ignore formula”, will it ruin the integrity of the worksheet?
Really love your adjustments and want to try using for my daft this weekend!

It is not easy to add columns in the War Room tab without breaking some on the other formula’s. One “work around” would be to add 3 batters and 3 pitchers to the # of batters per team and the # of pitchers per team on the User Tab. Then put the amount you can spend on the team budget line.

Not a bug but could be helpful to some. If you are looking to link this with say other projections like Yahoo, here are two formulas to help with the different nomenclature for the names.
First I created a column on “Players” tab off to the side showing last name and team with this starting with Braun. =LEFT(B3,FIND(“,”,B3,1)-1)&” “&E3
For yahoo nomenclature created this formula:
=TRIM(MID(B2,FIND(” “,B2,1),FIND(” “,MID(B2,FIND(” “,B2,1)+1,99))))&” “&TRIM(MID(B2,FIND(“(“,B2,1)+1,3))
B2 is where I have the players name as it is copied directly from Yahoo ie: Ryan Braun (Mil – OF).
So both should equal Braun Mil allowing you to do lookups and other things easily.

there seems to be an error in the code; when you populate players to team owners under the player’s tab; the corresponding OF’s in the Dashboard scratches out an additional OF that is still on the board. At 1st glance, I noticed the formula in the entire AB column was one cell off for each…example: AB2 showed =VLOOKUP($Z3, …) instead of $Z2. I fixed the whole column, but when I assign Jose Bautista to an owner, the player below him gets scratched out and assigned to no team owner…

@jason P, simple fix. It looks like Adam Either was moved or added as there are Ref errors in column AC and this caused the conditional formatting error. To fix highlight Column Z and bring up “Manage Rules” under “Conditional Formatting” (2007+ & I forgot how to do this in 2003 or earlier). Delete the rule for cell z38 and change the range to “=$Z$2:$Z$460″ instead of “=$Z$39:$Z$460,$Z$2:$Z$37″ This should fix it.

I updated the War Room section “Your Selected Players” to now work as a drop down so you can view the different teams in your league. It doesn’t use columns labeled “A” “B” “C” in the players tab so if anything else uses those columns in a spreadsheet wouldn’t be affected. If you want it reply below

I’d like to make a few suggestions for changes to the spreadsheet. After running through a mock draft with a 2min timer, I think these changes…if possible…would help the user navigate the sheets/players faster.
1. Can the players in the Players Tab be sorted via position? It makes it easier & faster to find them when assigning them to teams.
2. When choosing players to assign to teams in the drop-down, can the window for the dropdown be re-sized to accommodate however many teams you have in your league. Saves time having to scroll.
3. In the user’s tab, can we change where “Your team” can be located? I’d like to be able to place my team in the position I’m drafting out of. It also makes it faster when assigning players to teams via the drop-down menu.
Regardless of what you can or cannot do, thanks for all you guys provide! Your tools are best on the web, bar-none!

Question on the auction sheet. My league is $260 rather than $280. It doesnt appear that when changing the team budget to $260 that the auction projected numbers go down to reflect the lack of $20 for each team. Can this be adjusted? If so, how?

I have been studying and preparing for my draft and loving the War Room! I have been preparing for a 12 team 5×5 H2H league and just found out that it is actually a 10 team 5×5 H2H (apparently 2 decided not to return). How much adjustments in position rank will I have to make going from 12 team to a 10 team? My guess is the tiers stay pretty close to the same. I still plan on punting C. In 12 team planned on SP around 5th round is that still true in 10 team? I know how other teams draft helps to determine some of who is taken when. With 10 teams there should be plenty of waiver opportunities. I read the article that talked about what is needed to win in a 10 team league. I have those numbers plugged into my War Room.
Because of keepers, only Miggy, A.Gonzalez, and Cano are available in the top 17 of the War Room player ranks. I have first pick this year so I am planning on taking Miggy, with Bautista being my keeper for the 2nd round. 3rd/4th round looking at Best OF (1st option), Best 2B (2nd option) or best SS (3rd option) avail. My thought is that I should be able to land Hamels, Bumgarner, Greinke? in round 5. Then SS in round 6 or so..

I am trying to do the spreadsheet for 14 teams. I have added two extra lines and teams on the hitting and pitching category ranking matrix on the War Room worksheet and expanded the data retrieved, (e.g. m$73:m$84 to m$73:m$86) for the ten categories and 14 teams. However the dropdown or popup when selecting an owner for a given player on the Players worksheet only shows the first 12 teams. What do I need to do to show all 14 teams on the dropdown?

I havent read the comments so i dont know if someone asked, but i was wondering is there anyway to change the rankings based on the projected amount of win shares by the projected stats? Also, is there any way to change the money worth of each player based on the worth of those projected win shares over a replacement player? And lastly, does anyone know what the goal statistics should be in a ten person league?
And thank you so much for making this, it’s awesome.

Can we get an updated War room with all the bugs fixed? This is great, but I’m not excel savvy enough to perform the fixes on my own (I’ve tried… and sadly failed).
My issues are that I can’t get the names to cross off the player lists consistently and I can’t get the bidding column for my hitters to populate correctly in the war room. Thanks!

Im trying to figure out how to fix the values. I thought they were going to be point shares but I have a 12 team essentially yahoo settings auction league and the values are way low. $40 for Braun rather than $45 for instance on the 160/100 plan.
I readily admit that I suck at excel but is there a way to get those point shares values into the spreadsheet without manually altering each and every one?

Guys,
Fantastic sheet, the only thing I am struggling with is that on the dashboard when a player is drafted the team name appears beside the proper player but for OF’s only the next player down gets crossed out rather than the player selected. It only happens for OF’s, the rest of the columns work correctly. Anyone know how to fix? Email me at mdickie15@hotmail.com if you have the fix. Thanks.

@Richard Kenno,
On the “Players” tab, start in cell C3 next to Braun and find the Data Validation command in your toolbar. Once you are there, you have to set the source data to from =$AY$1:$AY$12 to =$AY$1:$AY$14.
You’ll have to then copy that formulas all the way down the Owner column and then repeat the same process for pitchers.
