Max Scherzer against the Phillies. If there was ever a chance to redeem yourself in losing a perfect game on the last out the very next day, this would be the pitcher and the team to do so. From a daily fantasy perspective, I’ve always said that in order for a pitcher to pay for his price, he has to have a reasonable expectation of doing 2 things: Allow 3 runs or less, and strike out 1 batter for every thousand dollars you pay. You may ask why I don’t include innings or hits in this formula of mine, and it is a valid question. For one, if a pitcher has allowed less than 3 runs up to a certain point, he has a good chance of remaining in the game. Also, if a pitcher is going to strikeout plenty of hitters, he must pitch plenty of innings, therefore that basis is completely covered. I don’t worry about hits so much, because they tend to correlate with runs scored and high contact rates (which pitchers that strike hitters out typically don’t have). So this all begs the question, “is Max Scherzer worth paying 14K for on DraftKings?” My answer is no. Now to preface this, you will never find someone that lends themselves to the “pay for pitching” mantra than myself. The reason I say no does not boil down to one simple point, but rather to many. My first reason to avoid Scherzer is that while the Phillies are the worst in basically every hitting category ever, they actually don’t strike out that much. Even against one of the more strikeout prone teams such as the Astros or Cubs, I would have a hard time giving any pitcher the reasonable expectation to reach 14 strikeouts. Another reason, maybe even bigger so than the first, is the fact that there are so many other solid, high-upside options for 3-5K cheaper. So should you pay 14K for 14 Ks? Yes! Should you pay 14K for Scherzer today? No!

While the rest of the DFS Grinding world tilts their way through the US Open golf tournament (and the Milly Maker that goes with it) this weekend, I’ll be over here watching baseball and praying the rain goes away. What a nightmare the rain has been for DraftKings players. Knowing what games to play and what games to avoid when over half of the games have a significant chance of rain has been very difficult. Today is a new day. Let’s get to baseball. After a slow start, Chris Sale has really turned it on. His strikeout totals (from most recent to furthest away) over the last 5 games have been 12, 14, 13, 12, and 10. Talk about DFS gold. The Rangers have a tendency to strike out against lefties as it is, and Sale should have plenty of them. His strikeout floor would be 7 or 8, so even if he gives up some runs, he’ll score some points for you. He’s as safe as they come today.

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the baseball bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the Coors Field, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Baseball entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of DraftKings players requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self evident: that all ballparks aren’t created equal, that the Rockies away from Coors Field struggle offensively, and that left handed pitching dominates the very lineups set forth by Walt Weiss himself. Have yourself a day Cole Hamels.

So many people are fanatics about Shark Week. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just log on any social media outlet on July 5th of this year. I would advise not doing so unless you like endless rants by teenagers who are fascinated with sea creatures. Instead, you should play some DraftKings fantasy baseball. Maybe the real Shark will be pitching that day. With his 4.00+ ERA, I’m not sure they even call Jeff Samardzija the Shark anymore actually (maybe he’s like a toothless shark or something). He just happens to be pitching today, and he will be in my lineup. The Twins can make any right handed pitcher look good this year. Samardzija has looked rough this year, but he is coming off of an 8 inning, 3 ER performance. We know he has the capability to be an ace. He finally looks right and has a great match-up to go with it.

Everybody in the DFS world always talks about stacking Coors. Home runs fly out of there faster than a toupee in a hurricane. Nobody talks about the ill affects of Coors on the the offense that plays half of their games there. The Rockies are so fun to pick on away from home. They strikeout against lefties at one of the highest rates in baseball (heck Brett Anderson struck out 8 in 5.1 innings before the rain delay just last night). Less than 8 punch-outs for a man named Clayton Kershaw will be a disappointment today and he has an upside of 12 or more.

The stars sure do look pretty when they align. Our good friends the Phillies just happen to be very bad against right handed pitching (along with many, many other things). They strikeout a lot, don’t hit the ball very hard, and don’t get on base too often. In fact, they are dead last in the league in weighted on base percentage against righties, and dead last in the league in hard hit ball % against righties. Matt Harvey is a righty. Matt Harvey is a very good righty. Matt Harvey is a very very very good pitcher. The stars are aligning, I can see it right now. Happy Matt Harvey day everyone.

I hate bloop singles. I despise watching my pitcher give up a run because a guy got jammed up inside and sent it between first base and left field. It doesn’t even feel right when my guy who is 0-3 on the day (trust me, this happens often) drops one between the infielders and outfielders on a lucky blooper. Sometimes though, it takes a blooper or 2 to have success… Like my 2 RBI bloop single in my slow pitch softball league the other night, but we won’t talk about that. What we do need to talk about though, is Lorenzo Cain. This guy is a stud. I wouldn’t doubt that he would be good at whatever sport he attempts because he is such an athlete. He now finally gets away from all these pitchers parks and gets a sweet matchup at US Cellular. Oh… and he’s getting on base at a rate of .479 on the young season and driving the ball extremely well. I look forward to rostering him today.

If you read my column last week, I used a terrible metaphor relating a cruise buffet to the pitching slate of the day. I guess I don’t learn from my mistakes very well, so I’ll use another bad food comparison. A few days ago I went to one of my favorite steak restaurants and the service was absolutely terrible. We waited 45 minutes for our food, and it was cold when it got there. It was an absolutely terrible experience. I dread going back there again, but I know that it will probably be amazing the next time I do. This is Clayton Kershaw. For that huge price, he probably burned you last time out. Do not be fooled, mediocrity is a very rare (unintended steak pun), occurrence for Clayton. I don’t care that the Rockies are hot, you are pitching Kersh, and you will be rewarded for it.

I recently went on a cruise. Now if you have ever been on one, you know there are way too many things to do, way too much to eat, and way too little space in your room. If you have not been, here is how a typical day goes. You wake up and bump into the wall getting out of bed. Next, look at the schedule written in probably 2 point font because they put 8 million bits of information on it. You’ll probably be hungry by now, no matter what time of day it is, so you decide to go to the buffet. Now on this buffet is anything you could ever imagine… well if you can imagine every TV dinner at Wal-Mart already cooked for you. Don’t get me wrong, there are some good things to eat on this buffet, it’s just hard to tell what they are because it’s just not appealing to the eye. Today’s pitching slate is one gigantic cruise buffet. There are so many unappealing options, but there has to be something good buried beneath the mess. Let’s take a look:
