After Reynaldo Lopez‘s last start of 2/3 IP, 6 ER, I wrote him off for this year and next year.  Now, I will begin a backpedal not seen since the bear at the circus who can ride a bicycle. “Beaux-Bo, you can’t pedal so close to that family of three eating a turkey leg. Beaux-Bo, stop it! Beaux-Bo, no! Beaux-Bo, no! Beaux-Bo, put down that torso!” And that’s the final written transcription of Beaux-Bo, the bicycle riding bear. Actually, I’m going to backpedal my backpedal, so, eat a D, Beaux-Bo, the bicycle-riding bear! I was serious last week when I said I’m outlawing pitchers who start a game, give up 5+ runs and can’t get out of the 1st. They’re completely untrustworthy, so it’s not surprising Lopez would have a start of 9 IP, 1 ER, 1 hit, 3 walks, 11 Ks, ERA at 5.17. That’s the problem!  What are we getting next time out?  3 IP, 6 ER? 7 IP, 2 ER? No one has any idea. Listen, I know there’s uncertainty in this crazy thing called fantasy (worst Queen song ever), but I’m not inviting more risk. I’m still out on Lopez. Sorry, gotta put my foot down, even if I’m writing this from an anti-gravity chamber where I can eat turkey legs without fear of a bicycle bear attack.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Welington Castillo – 3-for-5, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 9th homer, hitting .209.  Where’s the boeuf?! (Hopefully not on your teams.)

Zach Plesac – 5 IP, 6 ER, ERA at 3.98. Sigh. That should’ve been a cakewalk like a Willians Astudillo fashion show, and it turned out to be an ‘Apollo Creed’s manager screaming to throw the towel’ start. Plesac could be tired, so no matter what the Streamonator says about his next start, I’m done with him.

Glenn Sparkman – 4 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 5.97. Oddly enough, Sparkman isn’t even a matchup guy.

Brandon Dixon – 1-for-3 and his 15th homer. And they said Bra-Dix couldn’t get any traction. Just need the Sparkman.

Dawel Lugo – 2-for-4, 2 runs and his 4th homer. Sparkman tried to groove a pitch and Dawel lurched forward with, “Lugo’s there?!”

Matt Boyd – 6 1/3 IP, 3 ER, 10 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 4.57. Gonna be tough to peg Boyd next year. He doesn’t seem matchup-dependent as much as ‘Will he give up a bunch of bombs and be unstartable?’ dependent. That’s a hard guy to recommend in any leagues. Much prefer someone who you know you have to sit on the road or in bad matchups.

Craig Kimbrel – Hit the IL with elbow inflammation. I might be forgetting someone, but I think my drafting of Kimbrel this year was my worse pick in ten years. It’s not that he was bad — oh, he was bad — but he took up a bench spot for four months and I never draft top closers, and only grabbed him because I figured he’d sign in March and was at a discount. A terrible pick by me. Rowan Wick looks like the clearcut replacement, which means Pedro Strop will get saves. I kid. Kinda. I grabbed Wick, though.

Willson Contreras – 4-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 21st homer, and has now homered in every game since he returned from the IL (2). He could homer every game the rest of the year and I’ll have no chance of owning him next year. Roberto Perez or bust, baby.

Kyle Schwarber – 2-for-3, 4 RBIs and his 34th homer, hitting .239. Schwarber hits 40 homers in the 1st person, erotic fan fiction novel, “You’re Getting Schwarber,” by Joe Buck, so we’ll see how prescient he is.

Cory Spangenberg – 1-for-4 and his 1st homer. His stats are so similar to Fernando Tatis Jr. I can’t decipher a difference.

Yasmani Grandal – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 23rd homer, and 2nd homer in the last three games. How bad has his 2nd half been?  Audience refrain, “How bad he is?” In the 1st half, he had 19 homers. You can do the math.

Bo Bichette – 2-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 9th and 10th homer, hitting .329. If this was any other year, we’d think Dante Bichette had a baby with Barry Bonds. This year? Yeah, it’s solid, I guess.

Kean Wong – 0-for-2 as he was called up by the Rays. Not saying the Rays and the Cards are about to enter into a pissing contest, but the Rays’ Wong is two inches longer. His minor league numbers (10 HRs, 6 SBs, .307) look like literally every middle infielder in the Rays’ system. Yo, Rays, you breeding boring middle infidels? I will call him, Wongy Wendell. Either way, we don’t know if the Rays will play with Wong (for fear of blindness), but he’s best left for AL-Only leagues for now.

Max Fried – 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, zero walks, 9 Ks, ERA at 3.86. You know what’s coming, right? You know, right? Fried’s going to throw 160 IP in the regular season, 30 more in the postseason and, when you draft him next March, his arm is going to fall off.

Mark Melancon – 1 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 4.05.  Kazaam! Melancon is, like, 47 years old and being made to throw every day. He really needed to be called in for a game that wasn’t a save situation?

Ronald Acuña Jr. – 2-for-4, 2 runs and a slam (37) and legs (34). Tildaddy says he needs another beer!

Victor Robles – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 17th homer, hitting .251. Robles has quietly become a top 75 overall player on the Player Rater. (Less quiet now, obviously.)

David Price – Won’t start on Friday, due to pain in his wrist. Who says there’s no injury risks in eSports?

Michael Chavis – Unlikely to return this year. Wonder if he’ll even be drafted in shallower mixed leagues next year. My guess is no, but I failed my psychic exam, which I saw coming from a mile away.

Mookie Betts – 2-for-4 and his 26th homer, hitting .291. Mookie Best!

Nathan Eovaldi – 5 IP, 1 hit, 4 walks, 1 ER, 3 Ks, ERA at 5.77 vs. Martin Perez – 6 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 1 K, ERA at 4.75. This matchup pitted 95 MPH fastball vs. a 98 MPH fastball as Bob Feller rolled over in his grave faster than either of them could strike anyone out.

Kolby Allard – 6 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 10 baserunners, 2 Ks, ERA at 3.78. I’ll admit to getting cold feet yesterday about the Streamonator liking Allard’s start vs. the O’s. Put on some socks and stop being a chicken!

Nick Solak – 1-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 2nd homer, hitting .321. He’s now hit in all but four games since he was called up on August 20th, and he’s walking a ton (.429 OBP). He won’t be in this afternoon’s Buy, because there’s about thirty other 2nd basemen currently hitting, but Solak looks decent. Compared to Odor, he looks like Rogers Hornsby. Call him, Nick Hornsby, and have him write some dude lit!

John Means – 6 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 4 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA at 3.50. Not a bad piece for the Red Sox next year. What, you didn’t hear? O’s pitchers are the Sawx’s farm system.

Michael Lorenzen – 0-for-3 as he played center field. Not only is he playing the field, but he’s playing one of the most demanding positions. Next up, he plays all the positions and pitches at the same time, like a 3rd grade stickball game.

Jose Iglesias – 1-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 11th homer, and 2nd homer in as many games. Like some crazy Abel Ferrara fever dream, I made Iglesias a batty call, and now since he could be a hot schmotato, I might hold for a few. Though, he won’t be in this afternoon’s Buy column, because he’s here now.

Eugenio Suarez – 3-for-5 and his 41st homer, hitting .264. I’m hoping for Suarez to win the home run title and Hanser Alberto to win the AL batting title for the slack-jawed expressions.

Sonny Gray – 6 IP, 1 ER, 4 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 2.75. I can already hear me cursing myself for going back in on Gray next year yet I can’t stop myself from Gray. The duality of man enters into a duel, will Gray or Grey leave?

J.T. Realmuto – 2-for-5, 2 runs and his 22nd homer, and 2nd homer in as many games. The Phils would’ve been better off getting Realmuto and no one else. No McCutchen (more because he’s been injured all year), no Harper, no Bruce, no Vargas, no Segura, no nobody. By the way, a septuplet negative is a positive.

Harold Ramirez – 1-for-4 with his 10th homer, hitting .270. He was the 249th player to reach 10 homers this year (Seriously.) It was a new record that was surpassed two hours later with Bo Bichette, and will likely be broken again by the time you read this. Giancarlo Stanton is the only player to not hit ten homers this year.

Bryan Reynolds – 2-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 15th and 16th homer, hitting .333. Reynolds is only the 3rd Pirates switch hitter to homer from both sides of the plate in one game, joining Dale Sveum and Bobby Bonilla, which I think means the mets owe Reynolds a million dollars. Also, Coolwhip just gave you his Bryan Reynolds fantasy.

Josh Bell – 2-for-4 and his 36th homer. I think I projected him for 17 homers this year, but, after his 1st half, only 36 homers by this point feels like a disappointment. *lifts glass, makes toast* Here’s to new expectations being a buzzkill.

Kyle Tucker – 2-for-6, 2 RBIs and his 1st homer. Quick, Hinch, get him out of the lineup!

Wade Miley – 0 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 3.35. Sorry, Miley, rules are rules and I can’t draft you next year.

Kyle Seager – 2-for-6, 3 RBIs and his 20th and 21st homer, hitting .252. Great, now Corey’s gonna get more crap from his mom.

Austin Nola – 3-for-6, 3 runs, 5 RBIs and his 8th and 9th homer, hitting .277. He won’t be in this afternoon’s Buy column, because I can’t bring myself to believe you’d pick up Austin Nola without thinking someone dropped the Philly pitcher and you could use the innings.

Mike Trout – 2-for-3, 3 runs, 2 RBIs and his 45th homer, hitting .293. From fish comes life, from Trout comes baseball, from drums comes Phil Collins. — Book of Genesis.

Mark Canha – 1-for-3, 1 run, 2 RBIs. He’ll be in this afternoon’s Buy column as he has been for the last three weeks. He won’t have time to break Ty Wigginton’s 12 weeks in a row record, at least not this year. Does that carry over to the next year? Will need to talk to Elias.

Marcus Semien – 4-for-4, 3 runs and his 8th steal, hitting .277. If he ends the year with a 30/10/.285 line (possible), does that change your opinion of him for next year? Feel like he’s becoming a sneaky top 100 overall guy.

Logan Webb – 2 2/3 IP, 7 ER, ERA at 6.50. If you started Webb outside of San Fran, you deserved this. *quickly checks my teams to make sure I didn’t start Webb outside of San GFran and deserve this* Turns out I didn’t deserve this, but thought I might.

Paul DeJong – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 26th homer, and 2nd homer in as many games. Colonel Mustard in the pantry with the Nilla Wafers!

Dakota Hudson – 6 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, 2 walks, 2 Ks, ERA at 3.40. Never thought I’d be so happy to stream the Hudson. Just floating along with the Hudson stream, passing an insane crazy BABIP, a goofy terrible K/9, an almost as bad BB/9, a 1997 Fila sneaker and toxic waste.

Tucker finally gets his first start and had a good game. Too bad it took Springer to go down with a head injury for him to get into the lineup. It also is ironic and perfectly fitting for the corpse of Josh Reddick to emerge from the grave today as he had 3 hits and homered for the first time since June 28.

    Fantastic write-up, much-awaited!

    a. Got Fletcher off waivers, yeah so happy! I’m hoping he can boost my BA ’cause Brucely it’s terrible but I could gain 5 pts in the blink of an eye and at least he has been hitting for a good average if 0 counting stats. Will consult as always with the Hittertron.

    b. Abbott and Costello quote of the day for September 6

Hit the Ice, 1943. It’s about two newspaper photographers who get mixed up with gangsters at a ski resort.

Abbott (Flash Fulton): This bank’s been stuck up.

Costello (Weejie ‘Tubby’ McCoy): What’ve they got to be stuck up for? They’re no better than any other bank.

You pegged it in ReyLo last year. I didn’t listen. I bought in a few places on him after he flashed brilliance for a good stretch in the second half of 2017. For the same reason I was in on Marquez and out on Morton. Ouch. 2018 is a repeat basically for ReyLo (and Morton) basically. Seems like we just have lopsided pitchers in reverse with these two (and Marquez just a Hm/Rd streamer). Maybe in a 15 team Dc ReyLo can be ownable but that’s too tempting to play with fire. Of course we risk the break out potential a la Gioloto, Morton, Cliff Lee, etc but 5.17 is pretty destructive to title chnces despite the starts like last night. Deep breaths.

    What up G,

How do you feel about Pineda vs CLE tonight? The bot has him at $8.6. Im in the second week of my semi-final H2H matchup…here is how the matchup currently breaks down:

7-4-1 me – #1 seed so a 6-6 tie moves me into the finals

    My team:
    78R – 26HR – 66RBI – 10SB – .267AVG – .858OPS
    16 of 20 starts – 121K – 10QS – 3.13ERA – 1.09WHIP – 10.24K/9 – 6SV
Tomorrow: Lucchesi vs COL ($27.4) and Bassit vs DET ($23.9)

    His team:
    70R – 26HR – 75RBI – 3SB – .300AVG – .903OPS
    17 of 20 starts – 116K – 8QS – 3.39ERA – 1.31WHIP – 9.58K/9 – 12SV
    Tomorrow: Heaney @ CWS ($26.9)

We’re both loaded up on pitchers for Sunday, if necessary, but I’m of course trying to hold ratios and net a QS. Worth it? Or do you feel better about tomorrows streamers and see what happens going into Sunday?

Sorry for the long winded post, thanks brother.

    • Donkey Teeth

      Donkey Teeth says:

I like tomorrow’s streamers more but don’t mind starting all 3. Guess it really depends who you’d be using that extra start with on Sunday…

      • j-money says:
        (link)

Thanks DT, I appreciate your response man. Here is what Sunday looks like:

        My team:
Hendricks @ MIL ($.9), Manea vs DET ($11.3), Alcantara vs KC ($14.1), and Richards vs TB ($18.7)

        His team:
Cole vs SEA ($69.9)(nice), Soroka vs WSH ($2.7), Lauer vs COL ($18.8), Cease vs LAA ($5.2), and Montgomery @ MIA ($1.8)

Again, depending how the next couple days go with my pitchers and hitters, I could bench all pitchers and hope for the tie if ratios hold up. Sundays FA pitchers are Keller vs STL ($5.7), Woj vs TEX ($3.7), Barria vs WSH ($2.8), and Leake @ CIN ($0.0). Not sure if you like any of these guys more than who I’m currently rostering.

        Thanks guys

        • j-money says:
          (link)

FYI – As long as we don’t hit the 20 start max before Sunday, we can start as many as we want on Sunday…Right now with those three starters (Pineda, Lucchesi, and Bassit), I’ll be at 19/20 heading into Sunday.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Those Sunday streamers aren’t great, who you have is better — All of your starters are worth starting, but I don’t see why you’d start Pineda and risk a blow up, let him chase you

      • j-money says:
        (link)

        Hey Grey,

I figured they were, thanks. I’ve considered benching Pineda and having him chase me, but if I do bench pitchers to hold ratios I’ll likely be giving up K’s and QS’ come Sunday – or are you saying just bench Pineda tonight and start Lucchesi and Bassit tomorrow? Thanks man.

        • Grey

          Grey says:

                (link)

Exactly…that’s what I’m saying, he doesn’t care about ratios since he’s already behind so he’ll like try and take K’s and QS’ and roll all of his 5 starters out there Sunday. So by starting my pitchers, I can maintain Ks and QS’ but I’m risking ERA, WHIP and K/9. A great spot, but a tough spot.

I have 25 moves left for one more week of my semifinal matchup, and if I make the final it is 2 weeks long. Do I hold and wait to get these guys back and save my moves or grab 2 of the names above? I stream obvious good matchups for pitching, I like the core of the pitchers I have so I don’t foresee using more than 15 moves on pitching. Thanks for all the advice this year!!! Need to start 2 of:
    Berti 7: 4 vs Mil 3 @ SF
    Wong 6: 3 @ Coors 3 vs Mil
    Ford 7: 1 @ Bos 3 @ Det 3 @Tor (not sure he plays everyday?)
    Murphy 6 @ Coors: 3 vs Stl 3 vs SD (2 lefties, it’s Murphy, it’s Coors….)
    JOC 6: 3 @ Bal 3 @ Mets (2 lefties, but been cranking 34 homers in 20 at bats)

Are you comfortable owning manaea and using him or is he too risky? That start vs NYY is kind of misleading. It looked good on paper but he didnt generate many swinging strikes, 8.5%. He also is more of a flyball pitcher and this ball will not do him any favors. While I like the team and park he plays in, I am a little unsure about him since I am in a ratio battle with 2 other teams. The results of pitchers coming back from shoulder injuries are generally not good.

Way too early questions for next year…over under on the 2020 season for one of your favorite players…

Michael Brantley 70/20/60/300/5 in 500 ABs

He was a top 30 player for me in my shallow dynasty points league where we can keep the whole roster. He outscored all but 3 pitchers on the year too. He gains some value in the league due to his K rate since the league takes -2 for a hitter SO.

    Thanks for any input!

    • jose says:
      (link)

Forget all that, my real issue is I’m trying to make room for Kyle Tucker. It’s a 10 team H2H points keeper league. We can only roster 3 players per primary position. I own Acuna, Brantly, and Jimenez with primary LF positions so I can’t add Tucker without dropping one of them.

I’m in win now mode and drudged through carrying Jimenez this year. He’s easily the worst hitter on my team, but am dreaming on him being a big HR/avg threat based off of his minor league career. Would you drop Jimenez for Tucker?

The other option is to hope no one picks him up the rest of the season. Wait for Acuna to more than likely get CF primary eligibility and hope to get Tucker late in the draft next year.

Thanks Grey! Sorry for the run around. Shallow league problems….(eyeroll headache)

Yo Greybird, link the BryRey post!

Suarez has been a fascinating tale. He’s bested his HR every season since joining the Reds. And has increased his production and oWAR every year except this one, 2019, where he’s been down in that and EV, Hardhit%, and wOBA. What he has been doing is pulling 50% of the time (wow!) and 29 of HRs have come off of fastballs, vs only 18 last year. Hmmm, might add to queue, could be worth expanding on those stats.

Yeah i could see that, Seager has been oft injured and not really lived up to his expectations, but he’s still young and all the shine is not gone yet… you could probably get more than just a top RP, prob get pitching prospect that profiles as mid-rotation would be a good idea.

    Great write up:

    A) Why no Miley? Is he wearing down now or is this adjustment to him?
    B) No Chavis….does that mean Dalbec gets the call? I thought him staying down was because of the expectation of Chavis returning.
    C) What are your thoughts on Vogelbach next year? Is this 2nd half drop off morer like him or are pitchers adjusting to him? Better for points or roto?

    • CMUTIMMAH says:

Miley has been a mess for a few weeks now.

Vogelbach is Vogelblah. Even if you’re in an OPS league, I think it’s safe to say he’s just a guy. Sure, he hits HRs, but everyone hit home runs this year. Really washes out his best stat.

2 years ago, Vogelbach would be a darling. This year, he’s on the roster bubble.

    HeyHeyHey,

You know what gets my goat? When writers have friggin’ interns write their titles for them. Now Grey, I know you and Rudy follow this protocol . . . but you are both knolwedgable and careful writers. I’m talking about something more like yesterday’s article in the Chicago Tribune that discusses Javier Baez’s sore thumb, bit has the terrifying title: “Cubs’ latest injury concerns include Craig Kimbrel’s elbow and Javier Baez’s wrist” !!!!!

I’m frustratingly suffering with sore digits on both Baez and Polanco right now. Arghhh.

Also, why has Seth Brown been riding pine for three days? I know we might look at things from a fantasy perspective, but when someone is SCORCHING hot like that . . . doesn’t it make sense to get him in the lineup and rest other guys IRL, too? Got me.

I’ll check in with some annoying questions later.

Seeing the comment section dwindle means many many many many in Razzball nation have checked out and are fully immersed in fantasy football. Don’t get me wrong, I am too, but I still have a fleeting chance with my 2nd place baseball team!

So with roughly 3 weeks to go, I need a huge offensive push. No, not the kind of offense that prompts a twitter storm reaction like calling out Alabama for everything. (Alabama watch out for earthquakes, tsunamis, rattlesnakes, and ebola).

    But I am talking, I need to make up 20 runs, 20 rbi, and 10 hr in a 5×5 10 team roto. Oh yeah, also need to keep pace with sb’s and up my 0.262 batting average. So what do I do with Encarnacion? Here is what I’m dealing with as a roster crunch;

    1B – Goldy
    2b – Altuve
    3b – Donaldson
    ss – Story
    MI – Machado
CI – Rhys (also OF eligible)
OF – Dozier (also CI eligible)
    OF – Conforto
OF – McNeil (also MI & CI eligible)
    OF – Pillar
    OF – Franmil
U – McMahon (next week 6 at home)

Bench – Springer (concussed), Encarnacion, Gordon, Didi

Going to wait on Springer’s availability for next week.
What’s your best lineup assuming McMahon is at home? Who is the Springer swap if he can or can’t go?
