So, how’s everyone holding up without baseball every day? I don’t know what to do with myself! Yesterday I wandered into a Starbucks and told the coffeerista about Mike Clevinger for 2020. Then I sobbed into a cheddar scone until someone asked me to leave. We’ve gone over the final 2019 fantasy baseball rankings for hitters and the top 20 starters. This is different than Final Fantasy rankings where you rank Final Fantasy 1 thru Final Fantasy 15. That’s hardcore nerd shizz! This is simply fantasy baseball — we’re softcore nerds like Emmanuelle is to porn. So, there’s no more of these godforsaken recap posts left. You’re welcome. I, my over-the-internet friend, will be talking next about 2020 rookies -- PUT ON YOUR FREAKIN' SHOES! Not sure why I just yelled that. Top 2020 Prospects: Miami Marlins

The Miami Marlins are a baseball team. I mean the sport they play is recognizably baseball. Other than that, there isn’t a lot of certainty in Miami. Even 2019 Whit-alike contest winner Jon Berti seems as likely to fall back as spring forward in 2020. Is it really darkest before the dawn? Anyway, hope floats just off the coast. Er, inland, where Marlins affiliates are loaded with the fruits of an organizational tear-down that would’ve been vetoed in my home league. “Fruits” feels kind of extreme. Maybe we should call it the “eggplants” of an organizational tear-down. The eggplants for all-world Christian Yelich were players who do everything but hit, which seems to be something of a type for the Front Office helmed by Derek Jeter and Gary Denbo. They whiffed on Lewis Brinson who whiffs at everything, and they face a similar fate for everything in those Yelich and Stanton deals from two winters past unless someone (looking at you, Monte Harrison) changes their trajectory. Either way, even with those brutal trades, the Marlins are trending up thanks to a deep farm with rich soil for arms.

All the final 2019 fantasy baseball rankings for hitters are done. For those that skipped today’s title, this starts the top 20 starters for 2019 fantasy baseball. This is NOT for 2020 (caps for those who can’t read titles; supposedly it’s easier to read caps, I have my doubts). This is a recap. Will these affect next year’s rankings? Sure. But not entirely. Like when you had a knee replacement, this is a recap! To recapitulate the recap, these rankings are from our Fantasy Baseball Player Rater. With the top 40 outfielders for 2019 fantasy baseball, we’ve finished all the hitter recaps. We meaning me, but I’ll include you. No, that’s not a cue to try to hold my hand. This way when I say someone finished 30th and I ranked them 23rd in the preseason, it carries more weight like Willians Astudillo. If you’re a fan of a baseball team, chances are good at least one of your team’s coaches got fired this week. Maybe even the manager. Eleven Major League clubs don’t have one today. And if you’re a fan of HBO’s Succession, you’ve been promised a “blood sacrifice” tonight. This landscape littered with scapegoats is, ironically enough, a land of opportunity. Management wants to get young players on the field for extra cap-feathers on evaluation day. Look no further than San Diego, where Fernando Tatis and Chris Paddack may have saved A.J. Preller from a moment on the chopping block even though everyone else got canned. All that is to say, even with service-time suppression suffocating our game, kids like these in the Top 150 can still come quick.

Went over the catchers, 1st basemen, 2nd basemen and shortstops and top 20 3rd basemen for 2019 fantasy baseball. Guess what’s next! No, not pitchers. Read the title, man. In 2010, there were only 5 outfielders that hit 30 homers. In 2011, there were 9. 14 in 2012. In 2013, there were 3. A small bounce back with 6 in 2014. Eight in 2015. 11 outfielders in 2016. In 2017, there were 15. Nine in 2018. Last year, there were only 10. This year…DRUM ROLL!….everyone hit 30 homers. Okay, specifically there was 22 outfielders who hit 30 homers. As for steals, there were 14 outfielders who stole 30 bases in 2012, 10 in 2013, 11 in 2014, five in 2015, seven in 2016, only two in 2017 and five in 2018. This year we're down to four outfielders stealing 30 and eight players overall, down from eleven. As before, these rankings are from our Fantasy Baseball Player Rater with my comments. It did not hurt the depth of the top 20 3rd basemen for 2019 that nearly all of them had other position eligibility. There's only nine new names from the other recap posts, so it's no surprise someone like Hunter Dozier barely made this top 20 for 3rd basemen, but was 15th on the 1st basemen. Nearly all of those 1st basemen also ended up here. Makes it less exciting for you to read this post, but makes it an absolute joy for me to write it! This recap ranking is from our Fantasy Baseball Player Rater with my comments. The Player Rater allows me to be impartial while looking at how I ranked players in the preseason. Everyone in the baseball world is keeping at least one eye on the postseason, and everyone has the same question: is A.J. Pierzynski likable now? He looks like a nice dude, no? Maybe that’s just me. Humans are definitely wondering about bat flips and unwritten rules, though. Especially Grey, who wanted me to delete all Braves from the list because that organization is the worst thing that’s happened to baseball since Grey touted Rudy’s Tout Wars success on Twitter. Take heart, though, baseball fans. No matter how many bats get flipped this Fall, I’ll be here talking about all the good players our future selves can enjoy (unless they flip bats).

The top 20 shortstops for 2019 (what this is, read the title once in a while) are deeper than the top 20 2nd basemen for 2019 (not clickbait at all), and even deeper than the top 20 1st basemen for 2019 (click or not, but don't judge me). Rhys Hoskins, the 20th ranked 1st baseman, was about as valuable as the 23rd ranked shortstop (Asdrubal). To make sure we're not losing perspective, the 20th ranked shortstop was better than the 6th ranked catcher. The catchers were still terrible, don't get it twisted -- sorry, it's too late for your Mitch Haniger, you need to get it untwisted. We already went over the top 20 catchers and the top 20 1st basemen for 2019 fantasy baseball. Today, we dip our big toe into the top 20 2nd basemen pool. In the preseason, 2nd base looked hella deep, and now it looks relatively shallow. Not making this recap, due to disappointing me and/or you, is Jurickson Profar, Matt Carpenter, Robinson Cano, Jonathan Schoop, Daniel Murphy, Brian Dozier, and, last and least, Travis Shaw. Other guys stepped up obviously, but the last six names on this ranking are gonna leave something to desire. I teach in China for a month every summer, and all I really have access to for that month, entertainment wise, is baseball and whatever I can download or arrange ahead of time, so that leads to lots of podcasts and audio books. The books I repeat most feature a certain group of young wizards invented by J.K. Rowling, and during this summer's listen-through the whole Potter series, I had some new thoughts. First, poor Filch. I mean what a awful gig that dude has. Whole castle full of magic, and he's on his hands and knees scrubbing vomit and blood and snot and who knows what all. Second, Summer for Harry Potter is a lot like Winter for baseball fans. Harry just sits around waiting for news. All. Summer. Long. So every little snippet of something takes on extra meaning. And The Daily Prophet has its head so far up it's cauldron that even the snippets are just glances through a cracked mirror. So who's ready to fire up the rumor mill and speculate our way through the off-season!? Not me. I'm hanging onto Fall as long as possible. If that appeals to you, let's hop on a Thestral, fly over prospect country and pretend it's still Summertime.
