Lots of people tried to explain to me why you don't slide into first base. I still don't get it, so apparently I'm dense. Is 1st base lifted higher than other bases? Are there Lilliputians standing by first base with mini hammers? Is there a mini MC Hammer there singing U Can't Touch This which is just so bizarre it screws you up and you hurt yourself? I get that it slows you down, so there's no point to doing it. I understand that sprinters don't slide into the finish line. I've heard that from countless announcers. I do kinda wish in the next Summer Olympics a sprinter would slide into the finish line just so announcers would stop saying it. I still don't understand why people invariably get hurt doing it. [player]Josh Hamilton[/player] for one. He's out for 6-8 weeks with thumb surgery. He should've just had Ryan Braun look at it, he can cure thumbs just by brining them in vinegar. Anyway, here's what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

[player]Ryan Braun[/player] hit his first two home runs off Kyle Kendrick -- you know, that Kendrick sure sticks out for a sore thumb -- and then Braun emancipated a third ball off Lincoln. Three homers a mere two days after saying he was not able to swing normally is quite the 180. It's like when Mickey Rourke is one of the best actors -- in movies like Diner and Angel Heart -- only to have a string of flops, terrible plastic surgery and then he reemerges in The Wrestler. Or Travolta's career is in the toilet after Saturday Night Fever, dealing with whispers about his bedroom predilections and then he does Pulp Fiction. Doing The McConaughey while McConaughey was still ruining his career. A few years later, Mickey Rourke has another string of flops and his face still scares small children; Travolta does Battlefield Earth and now whispers about his religion have joined the other whispers. (Be forewarned, McConaughey.) So, will Braun now reemerge as the top hitter in the game and hold his Pulp Fiction/Wrestler renaissance or will his thumb continue to haunt him while he commits to Wild Hogs II: Where The Wild Hogs Are? All I know is he was complaining about his thumb a full nine months after he first hurt it, so it doesn't seem likely to disappear that fast. His value may be even higher now, but I'd still be concerned. Anyway, here's what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Oh man, we're back baby! I just wet my pants a little bit.
The first Pitcher Profile is here! I haven't been this nervous since Grey had me wax his mustache my first day as an intern.
So if you're new to Pitcher Profiles, where ya been?! Well glad to have you, and below is a gargantuan post that I think will break your browser. But hey! It's your one-stop shop (cliche boner) for all pitching questions, rankings, and GIFfing. I just learned how to GIF, and man, it's sorta close to learning how to Dougie except less people point and laugh at you (hopefully - but that'd be a bad GIF!).
As always, I tend to select my profiling on a pitcher who is widely available in most 10 and 12ers for owners to gauge their pickup or streaming interest. I know these was a hope for a [player]Taylor Jordan[/player] (sorry Long Beach!) profile, but I wanted to go for a guy who I think can have a bigger impact. A guy that "Oh my god throws a fire! Sale."
We've all heard about [player]Nathan Eovaldi[/player]'s stuff. Huge velocity - the fastest heater in baseball for a starter - but it's been a while since I've really broken down one of his starts. Plus his name sounds like an Italian deity of fornication. Now with two solid, you could even say "quality", starts under his belt (plus he's still only 24 even though it feels like he's been around for a while) I decided to tune into his game against the lowly Padres and see if the hurler from Crayola Canyon deserves more love:
The Reds manager Bryan Price, who I thought was their catcher, has a long way to go to catch up to ex-manager, Dusty Baker, on the Crazy-Meter, but naming [player]Jonathan Broxton[/player] the closer a week before he's even healthy, is a great start. Now Price needs to throw Latos 147 pitches in his first game back and he'll be running a dead heat. Apparently, Broxton can't only fill pants, he can fill shoes too. Dumpster Pants isn't safe by any means, but when a crazy-as-a-fox manager names someone the closer, and he could be the closer for the next two months, I'd pick him up. Not literally, no one can pick up Broxton literally. Anyway, here's what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
One of the questions from Bernard Pivot by way of James Lipton is, "If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say at the pearly gates?" That's easy, "Play ball!" Today, butterflies fly north for the summer, birds and bees have sex to John Fogerty's Centerfield, and Carlos Quentin is already injured. *slowly smells in a flower* Ahh...Shin-Soo Choo! Stupid allergies. With spring in the air and baseballs in mitts, we're back in the swing of things. Literally. Sadly, it's not all good news. With Opening Day comes the news that [player]Clayton Kershaw[/player] is starting the year on the DL. Aw, that makes me so sad. Wait, that's not sadness, that's happiness. Darn, my emotion detector needs recalibration. My first Sell of the year doesn't look so bad right now. I feel like Ace Ventura right after he shows up all the other cops. Yes, I have exorcised the demons! The Dodgers are saying it was precautionary and Kershaw will be back shortly. If you own him, I wouldn't sell him for fifty cents on the dollar. I'd take out my rosary beads and pray to the Patron Saint of Baseball, Ryan Church. Anyway, here's what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:
As the seminal prog band Emerson, Lake and Laura Palmer once sang: “Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, we’re so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside.” (The song went on for 45 minutes before 'Yes' came out and kicked their ass.) Opening day is here and the Razzball Lounge is open for bid'ness. Have a seat, grab a cold one and a pickled egg, and don’t get hypnotized by my bedazzled turban my fantasy freaks. Here in the lounge we dedicated, often celebrated, and usually acquitted (we have a great legal team) Razzballin’ scribes gather every opening day to bicker and banter, indulge and imbibe and moan and marvel at our fantasy teams and Grey’s magnificent ‘stache. On this last lazy Sunday (before things get serious) we find Sky in a dark corner slowing rocking back and forth muttering his mantra of “Tulo, Tanaka, Trumbo” over and over. Bellying up to the bar is podcasting paladin Nick Capozzi, clad only in his Expos throwback demanding another Labatts, showing off pics of his rolling Razzball ride and asking no one in particular, “Get your 32in32in32 tickets yet, eh?” Dropping quarters in the jukebox we find Jay Wrong demonstrating his “Paradise by the Dashboard Lights” interpretative dance – “Will you love me forever?” *bottle smashes above head* Stumbling out of the ladies room is the one and only Tehol Beddict casually zipping up his skinny jeans and introducing his new lady friend, “Guys, I’d like to introduce you to my cousin. Ain’t she pretty?” And here at the pool table is your humble-but-nonetheless handsome Guru putting the finishing touches on my 27 rosters. *closes eye, takes aim, sinks eight ball off two rails, drops shot glass into pint, downs boilermaker, lights cigar, sets turban on fire* With the drinks starting to flow let’s run though the jams and crams at each position for Week 1 of the 2014 fantasy baseball season. We’re not talking Miggy, Trout or Goldy here, we’re looking at players owned in less than 50% of most leagues that could help grab you an early lead on your way to fantasy glory. Good luck this season, it’s time to jam it or cram it.
I love the Aussie people; they have goofy words for a barbecue and even goofier animals -- koalas and kangaroos? Is Australia animated? Those things are goofy! Why not just get a duck-billed platypus and anteater and call it a day, you wacky-animal-having country! How about baseball there? Did all the fans in attendance win a Bowie knife if a player hit a home run into the big marsupial pouch? Did Crocodile Dundee throw out the first pitch? Did the batters hit with a fraternity hazing paddle? I don't know, because it was at four in the morning! Selig really needs to stop doing this to Opening Day. The players will be exhausted from traveling and won't be able to get their usual reps in during the spring. The first pitch of the season should be at a time when 7-year-old North American boys and girls can watch it. Not at 4 AM EST. What if the first game went extra innings or someone got hurt? Can they just call up someone from the minors for the next game? No, so then you'll have a team playing short. Do these stunts in December as a goodwill trip. Don't make major league baseball teams into the Harlem Globetrotters for a regular season game. Eh, whatevs, baseball is back, who cares if it comes with a big helping of Vegemite. Anyway, here's what else I saw for fantasy baseball:
If you want to see the worst video you can imagine, here's Aroldis getting hit in the face by a line drive. I say it's the worst video, not because of the graphic content, but because it looks it was shot by a blind man who has really large fingers. Which has me thinking, does braille come in different sizes? Things that make you go hmm... So, [player]Aroldis Chapman[/player] got hit in the face by a comebacker off of Salvador Perez's bat and needed to get carted off the field and taken straight to the hospital. No amount of weird stories about Aroldis coming home to find women tied to his bed, claiming they were kidnapped, makes what happened to Aroldis right. No amount of stories of him doing 150 MPH in a school zone, drag racing against Puig, makes this right. Aroldis can throw puppies in the air and say he's making it rain for pussycats and it doesn't make it okay. Though, I did rush to the waiver wire looking for [player]J.J. Hoover[/player] just in case Aroldis would be out for a while, then I went looking for [player]Jonathon Broxton[/player]. Fantasy baseball, you make me a bad person! I'd add Hoover and Broxton, just in case Aroldis is out for a while. Right now, I'd guess he misses a month with a fractured nose and a fracture above his eye. Anyway, here's what else I've seen in Spring Training for 2014 fantasy baseball:
Pitcher Profiles are almost back baby! Oh man, I haven't been this excited for pitchers to return ever since all the crap I got for saying [player]Ryan Dempster[/player] was a sleeper last year. Of course, no one remembers [player]Matt Harvey[/player] was my #1 sleeper (audio proof!), and then Grey even forgets which old bad pitcher I lumped in my sleepers saying it was [player]Josh Beckett[/player]! Ugh. Being such a bully around the office. Punk me for the rest of those picks! Yikes.
Here we go, the last one in my series. The big finale. The crème de la crème. The ultimate in baseball knowledge. I hope I don’t cry, I’m very emotional. In case you missed my other masterpieces, here you go:
In the top 40 starters for 2014 fantasy baseball, [player]Patrick Corbin[/player] headlined the tier named, "Taking a number three doesn’t mean a pee and poop combo." Corbin now has UCL damage, so he actually is a pee and poop combo. Now, as Alfred Einstein once said, "For every negative reaction, there's a not-negative reaction to it. I'm hungry, anyone have any snacks?" Alfred Einstein also took three years to pass 4th grade, until his teacher finally passed him saying, "I think all the chromosomes went to his brother Albert." I'm here to defend Alfred; he did have a point. Corbin's out, but that means [player]Randall Delgado[/player]'s back in. I've re-added him to my top 60 starters, top 400, the War Room and have adjusted my pitchers' pairings. Where Corbin was a solid, if slightly yawnstipating number 3, Delgado is an exciting upside number five or six. You say tomato, I say that's a one spicy meatball! What does this mean for [player]Archie Bradley[/player]? He doesn't get wet willied by Didi Gregorius anymore? Kirk Gibson stops calling his name like he's Edith from All in the Family? Bradley starts the year in the rotation? No on all three. Bradley shouldn't be affected by this Corbin injury. At least not at first. Since Delgado is now in the rotation, Bradley might be one more injury away from joining the Diamondbacks rotation. Anyway, here's what else I've seen in Spring Training for 2014 fantasy baseball:
Another Cuban has washed ashore, dreaming of American capitalism and getting seriously laid in Miami. The Cardinals signed shortstop, Aledmys Diaz. Let's give you a comparison that may or may not do it for you. Diaz hit 12 homers and stole 11 bases with a.315 average in his last year in Cuban ball. Recent raftee by the Dodgers, Alexander Guerrero hit 21 homers, stole 2 bases and hit .290. Right now, Guerrero might be losing the starting job to Dee Gordon who can't hit his weight, and he weighs 143 pounds. It's nice that another Cuban gets to realize his dreams like Yasiel Puig and Tony Montana, but I'm not even sure if Diaz will make an impact this year, or ever. Despite his name resembling "All Days," he's being projected as a bench player. Oh, and I just had a great idea. I'm not sure who can make this happen, but we should get Fidel Castro on the podcast to talk about baseball. Speaking of which, we're recording the first podcast of the year today and it should be on-site tomorrow. You can hardly wait. No, you! Anyway, here's what else I've seen in Spring Training for 2014 fantasy baseball:
