Welcome to the year end Razzball awards. I’m your host, Grey Albright and I’m joined by Random Italicized Voice, Hey. Also, on the red carpet for everyone’s arrival we have, MR. AL CAPS, “HOW ARE YOU?” And up in the balcony critiquing everyone’s outfits we have Clunky Segue, “As you were…” Before the show even begins, we have a very special musical guest, The Spin Doctors! Congratulations to the 2012 champions, RCL 40’s Rank Railheads. Co-managers Charley and JungleMike guided the Railheads to an incredible 119-point finish, missing out on perfection by a mere 3 stolen bases. While they had pretty much clinched their league title long ago, the overall title was up for grabs, and they continued to carefully make the moves necessary to stay ahead of the pack. Anibal Sanchez threw a complete game shutout with four baserunners and 10 Ks. I told you to draft him! (Then drop him.) Shut up, Parenthetical, you know-it-all. (That’s kinda harsh.) This is exactly what I expected from Anibal (in the NL). Please, blog, may I have some more?
Reds announced that Joey Votto is able to return. Crickets, pin dropping, echo…echo…echo… “God? It’s me, Dusty Baker. If I need him, is Votto ready to pitch?” “I’m afraid not, Dusty. He’s not a pitcher.” “In the traditional sense?” “In every sense.” Please, blog, may I have some more?
The 40-man roster began in the 1960’s when the Houston Colt 45’s entered as an expansion team. It gave them an opportunity to call up a young, smooth outfielder named Billy Dee Williams, who could play the field with the best of them. Please, blog, may I have some more?
This was a fantasitical week for a couple of celebrity relationships. In a stunning development for people who grew up a long time ago and stopped reading comic books, we found out that Superman is going to boom-boom-boom, lemme hear you say way oh! Please, blog, may I have some more?
Bay Area sports teams may want to throw out the mother dough. It’s tainted. Bartolo Colon was suspended for 50 days after being caught with elevated levels of testosterone. This much testosterone hasn’t been found in one man since they pumped Rod Stewart’s stomach in the late-70’s. Please, blog, may I have some more?
In 2010, the Diamondbacks traded Dan Haren to the Angels for Joe Saunders (and Patrick Corbin and Tyler Skaggs). Turned out in that parenthetical lied the rub. At the time of the trade, ESPN Fantasy said, “…this looks like highway robbery for the Angels, and a salary dump for the Diamondbacks. Please, blog, may I have some more?
Shane Victorino has long been a benchmark for many other players’ production here at Razzball. Dexter Fowler is Feign Victorino; Alejandro De Aza is Should-Hit-The-Gym-And-Train Victorino; Ryan Zimmerman is Bane of my Existence-rino. I look at Victorino like a proud papa. There has been a lot of interest on the site and in the forums involving streaming pitchers. As many of you know, I value SP more than the average drafter but I am not completely averse to streaming – particularly on teams in shallower league formats (10-12 MLB) with small benches and when I have lost SPs to injury (like RCL where Beachy and Colby are toast). About a month ago, Troy Tulowitzki had surgery to have scar tissue removed from his groin. Tulo now sings, “Scar tissue that I wish you saw, because I’m kinky.” Yesterday, the Rockies announced nothing, but people familiar with Tulo’s groin — hey now! Please, blog, may I have some more?
Sometimes there’s a game with so much fantasy goodness, a game with so many notable nights for so many fantasy-relevant stars, that it’s almost overwhelming to choose which players to single out. Last night, the Braves came back from 9 runs down to complete their biggest comeback since 1987 and pull within 2 1/2 of the first place Nats, winning the game 11-10.
