You're gonna find this utterly incredible, but, with these top 100 starters for 2014 fantasy baseball, I've put out all of my 2014 fantasy baseball rankings. Tomorrow will be the top 100 overall, then the top 400 overall, but that's just putting everyone in perspective. I'm going to now soak my finger bunions in pickle juice and read a good book. Anyone read the Charles Nelson Reilly autobiography? I hear it's a real eye grabber. Oh, guess I should finish this post first. As always, my projections are included and where tiers start and stop. Anyway, here's the top 100 starters for 2014 fantasy baseball:
Two weeks ago we looked at the speedsters from 2013 and there were more than a few names on the list that were available on the waiver wire at some point. For deeper leagues and daily fantasy players that need to maximize each and every matchup, even the smallest advantages can mean the difference between a win and a loss. That's why we focused a lot on matchups this past year, and we'll do it again in 2014. Even the best base stealers get caught once in a while, so it's good to know as much as we can about who might be doing the catching before deploying our fantasy lineups. There's a lot that goes into a stolen base, of course, and the battery of pitcher and catcher is a large piece of the puzzle. Pitchers who are good at holding baserunners can be avoided while pitchers who have a tendency to cough up a lot of steals can be exploited. Here's how some starters fared in 2013 and over the last three years against the stolen base.
So, some of you may be asking, where's the Photoshop yo? With or without the 'yo' maybe. I don't judge. But yes, that would be a great a question, seeing as how there is no picture located north of this paragraph. A better question would be, how did you get so spoiled? It's not my fault Photoshop went buggy on me. So instead of crowing one of my pieces of artwork upon these Daily Fantasy Notes, I will try to create a solid, if not spectacular lede for all your fine lady and gentlemen. Yes, Grey likes to mention we have at least three or four female readers, but I think my estimate of a non-pluralized 'lady', which, according to my math, equals one, or perhaps even less than one is closer to the real number. How can I be so sure? Well, it's probably because I'm not counting our mothers. So, can you tell I have no idea what to lede about? Seriously. I have nothing, nadda. Zilch. Could it be because another baseball season is almost in the books? Or is it because I want to nap? Why not both? But yes, as the title establishes, we have very little time left. And that I also like The Doors. There is one more week of baseball left, and on an even sadder note, there is only one more Saturday left for us to gather and speak of Friday night baseball. Always remember that I will look upon these times with awe. Especially this specific instance, where I actually was able to write a lede based on nothing. So yay me! (All complaints are to be forwarded to Photoshop.) Here’s what I noticed yesterday…
As another baseball season winds down, we have a chance to reflect on our own journey in this wonderful game. Perhaps you, the reader, ponder of such things like — What did I do wrong? What did I do right? Why did I listen to Jaywrong? Or, better yet, why didn’t I listen to Jaywrong? Right? RIGHT! Regardless, we’re here to look back on the first year of the Bear or Bull series, and walk that same line of reflection and get an idea of how everything looks as the 2013 pieces fall into place. How did the process work, and did it do a good job? Are there ways to make the analysis better? Was I Jayright? Was I Jaywrong? More importantly, was I Jaysexy? Trick question, I’m always Jaysexy. Maybe we’ll learn something on the way. Or maybe we’ll just go over to the Football side of Razzball. My question is, why not both?
*sings Kelis song in head for five minutes before starting post* Okay, now that that's out of the way, I can teach you, but I have to charge. Stupid brain! [player]Denard Span[/player] has been hotter than something that's hot in a situation that's even hotter. I'm thinking he's hotter than a stolen wallet that fell into the crack of the world's fattest man. You can fill in a better allusion if you'd like. I'm empowering you, my prematurely balding men readers. Let's go back to the beginning of the season, March Grey drafted Denard Span in his last draft of the year, an NL-Only league. I, Grey Albright, Fantasy Master Lothario, was happy to get him, figured he could give me solid counting stats and 20-25 steals. Five months later, I was benching him for Eric Young, Garrett Jones, Reymond Fuentes, really anyone. Then Span decided to reach my projections in the final month. He's hitting over .400 in September and has stolen more bases this month than all of August (yes, he only stole one base in August, so it's not that spectacular of an achievement). If you're struggling for runs, steals and average, I'd grab Span in every league. The only way he could get hotter is if the world's fattest man farts. Allusion callback! Anyway, here's some more players to buy or sell this week in fantasy baseball:
[player]Felix Hernandez[/player] was scratched from his Wednesday start with an oblique strain. Guys and four girl readers, you can't be too precious with your guys. That whole credo "dance with the one who brought you" is real cavalier. You're a real gentleman as you lounge about in sweat pants while your woman cooks you dinner. It's honorable. Remind me to submit you to the Reader's Digest Five Humans That Make A Difference contest. It's also silly for fantasy baseball. Save your loyalty for your kids when they ask you, "Daddy, do you like me more than your automobile?" Or, "Daddy, how come you were hugging the mail lady for ten minutes with your hands on her butt?" Forget your loyalty for your starting pitchers (or hitters). Felix could throw this weekend to see if he can start again this year. If you're strapped for space, I'd absolutely look elsewhere. What's the worst thing that happens? You miss two starts from him? His last starts weren't even great. You could find better starts off of waivers. Look at me having faith in you! Anyway, here's what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
We're almost into mid-September, which means the fantasy season is growing a little long in the tooth. It's a stressful time for those of us still alive in H2H land -- the fantasy baseball playoffs can be a depleting time for both your liquor cabinet and your liver functionality. It doesn't help, then, that this is the time of the year when managers -- especially those of teams out of contention -- like to mess around with their starting rotations. I don't blame them; it makes perfect developmental sense for the White Sox, or any other team, to move to a six-man rotation in order to see what they have in arms like Andre Rienzo or Erik Johnson. But as a weekly leaguer, this sort of rotation shuffling can be maddening if you're trying to gauge the two-start landscape. This is all to say that now, more than ever, it's imperative that you check and re-check the probable pitchers prior to locking your weekly lineup. Good luck in the playoffs, my friends. As always, probable pitchers are subject to change. For a look at all fantasy baseball streamers, click that link.
Taijuan Walker will start vs. the Astros on Friday. The Mariners' front office decided if they were going to sell him for ten cents on the dollar this offseason, then it was best to give him some major league experience. Here's what Prospect Scott had to say in the preseason, "Walker is my #3 overall SP prospect, behind only Dylan Bundy and Jose Fernandez. He brings legit ace potential, and he should be ready for big league ball this year. Still, Taijuan's greatest asset is his ability to hit Grey in the head with a fastball every time I dream about it." Hey! That snippet was obviously prior to Bundy's injury problems. Here's what I said the other day, "It could be roofie burnout, but I’m not interested in shallower mixed leagues. In deeper leagues, I’d stash Walker to see if you catch a firefly in a bottle, or whatever that yokelism is. He definitely has shown great stuff in the minors (10+ K-rate) if a bit wild (4+ BB/9) in Triple-A. He will be a great pitcher, it probably won’t be this year. Think Wheeler when he was called up." And that's me quoting me! Well, I also lied. Kinda. I didn't intend to lie, but he was just sitting there and I had a free roster spot... Ugh, I'm a glutton for punishment. I need serious help. Why can't I turn down any high-upside rookie pitcher? Am I an adrenaline junkie like Keanu Reeves in Point Break? Hopefully, Walker doesn't hang ten earned runs on my pitching line, but I'm expecting him to get Ks and have a relatively unremarkable start on Friday for earned runs and WHIP. For 2014, Taijuan is on the top of the list of guys that could be Matt Harvey 2.0, and I'll have much more to say about him in the offseason. Anyway, here's what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Mauledbypandas is back in first place for the first time since June 3rd. His team hit .289 this week with 44 runs and 43 RBI. Their 2.43 ERA lowered their season ERA to 2.99. A Hill O’ Beans dropped to second, 1-and-a-half back. They hit .284 this week with 16 home runs, and recorded 11 saves and a WHIP of 0.97 on the pitching side. Check out the Master Standings (you can also access them via the Leagues menu up top) to see where your team ranks in comparison to the other 767 teams through Sunday. The page now includes sortable stats.
Welcome into the Razzball Lounge, fantasy freaks. Here in the lounge we celebrated Razzball scribes like to kick back, relax, sketch Grey’s mustache, debate [player]Yasiel Puig [/player]and lament our fantasy baseball failures over a couple of scotch and sodas as we prepare for some football drafting here. What do you mean it’s too early for scotch? It’s 11 in the morning, Guru. Well, get me a Pop-Tart with it. On this lazy Sunday in the lounge we find Sky in a dark corner trying to decide where to rank Bilal Powell, “Isn’t baseball season over yet? How many games do they play, like a 100?” Dropping his quarters into the jukebox is our resident bear or bull, JayWrong, “You guys should really pick up [player]Jhoulys Chacin[/player]. Mind if I play Elvis Costello again?” *bottle smashes above head* Bellying up to the bar is our Podcast host and resident Canadian arguing with the bartender, “Whaddya mean you don’t have Labatts? How am I gonna wash down this pickled egg, eh?” Meanwhile, in the ladies room we find the one and only Tehol mid fondle with a handsome honey he’ll soon discover has an Adam’s apple, “Uh, guys? GUUYYSS?!” And here at the pool table is your humble and almost as manly Guru preparing a list of ballers that are going to deliver you a fantasy baseball championship. *closes eye, takes aim, sinks eight ball in corner pocket, downs scotch* What are we doing here again? Oh yeah, it’s time to jam it or cram it.

Sean Connery enjoyed the landing of B-Weezy.

So it's official. Just in time for your playoffs or late-season run for a title, [player]Matt Cain[/player] has joined [player]Jason Heyward[/player] and [player]Rafael Betancourt[/player], all recent casualties, on the DL. Even though the X-ray's came back negative after Cain got hit by a line-drive on Thursday, Bruce Bochy said it was too soon to say whether or not he would make his next start. A mere seven hours later, which I guess was not too soon anymore, it was decided that Cain would not only miss his next start, but at least three. You'd figure with such a big head, Bochy would have a better grasp of time. And, you know, bullpen usage. Granted, this season wasn't shaping up to be Cain's finest and was pretty up-and-down (more down) in general. But his second-half ERA of 2.84 and improved walk rate were representing an expected regression. So the timing couldn't be worse, especially since the Giants are not postseason bound and really have no reason to rush a recovery. Relevant. Here’s what else I noticed yesterday…
