My esteemed colleagues at Yahoo have put out their 2018 fantasy baseball rankings.  I think I’m using the word colleague incorrectly.  Does colleague mean someone you’re in a league with?  Yes?  No?  Okay, let’s move on.  I might be using esteemed wrong too.  Know what?  We’re moving on!  The Yahoo 2018 fantasy baseball rankings are out; I’m sure about that after consulting with my hair stylist, Jeffrey, at SuperCuts.  I said to Jeffrey (don’t shorten it), “Do I have dandruff, Jeffrey?”  Jeffrey, digging through my full, lustrous mane, “Why do you think this horrible thing, Mr. Grey?”  I replied, “I saw how low Yahoo ranked Cody Bellinger and I began to demonically scratch my head.”  After a three-hour explanation of who Cody Bellinger was, what fantasy baseball is and the ins and outs of Yahoo fantasy baseball, Jeffrey responded, “That is not dandruff, Mr. Grey.  I shaved my hair and donated it to a sculpture at Miami’s Art Basel, and that Cody Bellinger ranking makes me scratch my head too.”  Thrilled I didn’t have a disease of the dry scalp, I was still left puzzled by some of Yahoo’s rankings.  So, I figured be a Pisces and jam.  For this post, I will be looking at the consensus Yahoo 2018 fantasy baseball rankings vs. my own 2018 fantasy baseball rankings.

Since my baby bae who sent a rocket up my tukis in lots of metaphorical ways is Cody Bellinger, I need to shovel down to what I think is the logic of his ranking of 30th overall.  On our Yahoo Player Rater for 12 teams, Bellinger is ranked 20th overall, and behind two pitchers.  You know how I feel about drafting top starters, so I would say, taking me out of the equation, Cody is still the 18th best overall player.  I have him ranked 17th overall.  Yahoo, however has him at 30th overall, and only one round behind is quibbling a bit, but I’m a quibbler, y’all!  Plus, one round that early in drafts makes a huge difference.  What I’m guessing here is Yahoo is considering Bellinger is due for a bad case of the Mondays and it’s back to Regression City, which has three Mattress Firm stores within two square miles.  Only thing is, regression to what?  A 35/10/.250 year?  That’s the most conservative projections for Bellinger that I can find.  Yahoo has Corey Seager ranked in front of Bellinger.  Seager doesn’t have ten steals in 1264 career ABs, and hit nearly half the amount of homers Bellinger hit last year.  So…Again with some stank…SO, yeah, I don’t know.

Here’s a berg of ice I seem to be floating on all by myself, Anthony Rendon.  There’s a difference of 27 spots between my rankings and Yahoo, who has him all the way down at 55 overall.  And “way down” is being sung by Tom Waits.  “When you draft with my rankings you get Rendon, but you gotta watch your back, well, I beg your pardon.”  Or maybe Yahoo’s ranking of Rendon is “Way Down in the Hole” by the Blind Boys of Alabama, who pronounce their cellphones a’la ‘mo-beel.’  This berg of ice I’m on is somewhat secluded, apizzarently, since Rudy’s rankings have Rendon down at 69 overall.  I’m on an island alone, mumbling about Rendon to my volleyball I’ve named, Vilson, due to trademark infringement lawsuit.   Just love this Nationals’ lineup, where Rendon will be hitting in the middle, and he feels on the verge of that season that everyone expects from Josh Donaldson.  The 32/10/.295 line that will send me from this deserted island to the island of Mypos while doing Balki’s Dance of Joy.

If Bellinger had me scratching my head, this one has me pointing an electron microscope at my head looking for mites, because the head scratching is so severe.  Yahoo has Johnathan Schoop at 79 overall.  Hmm.  Well.  Interjection.  I don’t know, guys and five girl readers.  I’ve mentioned this before, but when Robinson Cano was putting up 30+ HR, .290 seasons, he was regularly drafted in the top 30–Wait!  Cano is ranked above Schoop?  Daniel Murphy is ranked in front of Schoop with his microfracture surgery?!  Schoop who is six and eight years younger than those two, respectively?!  Schoop who was better than both of them already last year?!  Schoop something something rhetorical?!  Before I blow a casket like a necrophilic who doesn’t know the idiom is gasket, I’m moving on.

*me scanning down the starter rankings vs. my starter rankings*  Looks fine, looks okay, Strasburg is too high, but that’s fine.  Wow, a lot of these look pretty similar–WAIT, JAKE ARRIETA IS RANKED WHERE?!  Hold up (wait a minute!), he’s ranked in front of Sonny Gray, Luis Castillo, McCullers, Trevor Bauer–WAIT A SECOND!  Trevor Bauer is ranked where?!  After Cole Hamels?!  Kenta Maeda?!  David Price?!  David Price is ranked before Luis Castillo?!  Okay, my head is spinning and I need to sit down.  OH MY GOD, I AM SITTING!!!  AHHHH!!!

I’m going to list players in a handy chart like I did the other day with ESPN’s fantasy baseball rankings.  The Thank You’s have it.  It being good value from my rankings vs. Yahoo’s.  The No Thank You’s don’t have it.  They’re bad people.  Meh, they might be okay people, but they’re likely not ending up on any of my Yahoo drafted teams.  For this, I’ll be using my 2018 fantasy baseball rankings (go figure!) and Yahoo’s 2018 fantasy baseball rankings (crazy, right?).

    Thanks Grey!
This is one of my favorite preseason posts. In my 10 team Roto we get to keep one player and get that player in the round that Yahoo ranks. Bare with me but i have a few if/and questions. I have the one pick and Trout is kept. I can go Goldie but can also keep Bellinger at pick 41. If i were to do that should i draft Altuve instead of Goldie and ride out Bellinger as my 1b or keep him and still draft Goldie. My guess is best available rd 2 will be Ramirez or if i’m Really lucky, Lindor. My other keeper option is Kimbrel at 81. I’m all about SAGNOF but it’s also nice to have an elite closer for ratios since i’m Not drafting an SP until rd 5-6 and Kimbrel certainly wont make it past round 5 in my league where closers are overvalued.

Last question, have you listened to the new Evidence?

    Thanks!!!

    • Grey

Wow 2 Days in a row of great music references (Tom waits is an all time fav). If I’m in a league snake drafting based on yahoo rankings, I could see taking even more bats before pitching…maybe snagging my sp1 after bellinger/JoRam but before rendon bregman.

The theme seems to be that there’s a lot of bats who can easily put up round 1 numbers going in mid to late round 2 (manny, Rizzo, bellinger).

      • Duda Want to Build a Snowman? says:
        (link)

@Grey: Would really love an early round 1 pick in snakes this year . . . seems VERY easy to take trout, then 2 of machado / joram / bellinger on the round 2-3 turn. Please + thank you.

@Grey: Seriously! And machado / joram/ bellinger are all much safer than Odor/Story/Desmond were last year (I was updating my draft google doc and saw all those all in the top 11-20 for 2017 ahah)

    b. I gotta rattle off a few funnies, no? So, I’m currently posted in southwest Uganda (for the Geography buffs, about 70 miles southwest of 0N and 30E). And we’re in February and people here still say Happy New Year to someone they haven’t seen since the end of 2017! So….Happy New Year! Get it? Ah, man, you are a killjoy if you don’t get it.

    c. Signed up for an RCL, my draft is March 22! Hopefully all goes well. Will you have a who to draft at position 1 through 12 (yadda cubed) sometime before the start?

    d. In my office, which measures about 172 square feet. We have four work stations in my office. The team is great and really supportive. And, of course, I have three (!!!) female co-workers. I mostly bow down to them. One colleague (from Japan) who has the most tenure basically makes all the decisions for us. The other two ladies are from the UK (close to Sussex and her brother lives in Luton Town) and Italy (she’s from the Venice area but her boyfriend is from Sicily).

        b. We’re at 6/12, hopefully the other 6 will join soonest.

        c. On the female co-workers, I mean there are more women than men at the office. Don’t know why!

        d. Oh and colleague should equate to any fellow co-worker but I like your play on words on the ‘league’ part because other ‘perts are not in your league. So can’t really justifiably call them colleagues!! Lol. Of course, they’re your colleagues. Just mentally subordinate. You can find that all over the work place map.

Good stuff as always Grey. I have a draft query.

Currently, in Round 4 of a 15-team NFBC 4-hour. Pick 10. Went Harper, Lindor and Springer (was about to take Abreu couldn’t pass up Splendidly Springing.)

I know this is your #1 Starter territory, but with one pick until my turn here in the 4th, Abreu is still looming. With CarMart just gone, would ye take Archer OR would ye take Abreu with your next best starter (Nola) likely available as my first SP in the 5th?

    Thanks Fantasy Meister:) Lothario!!

@Grey: Thanks Grizzle & Cram and others. Took Abreu with no REGERTS! I’m cuckoo over me start of Harper, Lindor, Springer, Abreu. Ima tad light on speed, but last year in in my 2 NFBCs, 140 SBs was 3rd & 4th. So all one needs are 4 17+ steal guys and 4 13+ steal guys and an 8-steal guy and you’re in it.

Would like a Quintana/Bauer or Quintana/Castillo one-two…Yes Please and Thank You!

Given Daniel Mengden’s strong finish last year (against weaker lineups, I know), I thought he might crack your top 500 or your top 125 starting pitchers. What’s keeping him out? Why no love?

So I was able to grab your guy Trevor Williams just now at pick #485 in NFBC and I’m celebrating by listening to his podcast that he does with fellow Buc “STEVE BRAULT!”. Did you know this existed? Listening to an episode of them reviewing their fav Minor League cities. Favorite part so far was the shout out to the bar Cell Block in Williamsport that I regrettably hit up a few times in my college years.

If Williams takes off in Spring Training/April, can we drum up a nickname? I don’t want to jinx him with one now. He seems fun to root for and I recall him (via Tweeter) enjoying us rooting for him, which is pretty next level.

Speaking of the NFBC convo’s that we’ve been having past few weeks. I dunno that I ever mentioned that the $50 league I’m playing in (winner gets $400, 2nd place gets $100, NFBC takes the other $100)… I’m only playing against the other 11 teams in my league. Not the entire field of NFBC teams. Would that change your strategy? I’d think that it would not. A bit late now, but I’m just curious.

Lastly, what are your thoughts about LABR last night?? Outside of the Samardzjiajza/Bour picks. Rudy usually does a post about it right?

    • Cram It says:
      (link)

@knucks: I believe all NFBC leagues, you compete against your league, of course. But there should be grand prizes for placing across all NFBC leagues in that $50 division. And no, strategy wouldn’t change.

      • knucks says:
        (link)

@Cram It: Hard for me to find a lot of details/info that I’m looking for on the NFBC stuff. Gonna approach it by winning my league first, which is a pipe dream and I’m kind of just looking at learning a curve this year with this kind of league. Looking forward to the more hands off team management when the season starts.

      • knucks says:

@Cram It: To be clear, I mean on the NFBC website/forums. The post from Rudy in 2013 was super helpful

@knucks: I knew he did a pod, but I hadn’t listened…. Yeah, that’s right Williams retweeted my sleeper post for him or something… Seems like a good guy (for that reason)…. Wouldn’t change strategy, you need to win your league first… Rudy will write a post about it… I like his team, bit weak on OF and corner men, but ODOR!

Finally made this trade. N/L 260 roto auction 10 team inflation $5 a year 1 catcher 2 utility 5 OF. Blackmon 21 Dahl 17 Parra 9 and vizcaino 6 for Puig 22 J Turner 16 Arcia 14 Alex Wood 9. When you make a preseason trade, you have to keep the players in the trade unless they are traded to American League and I thought the rockies outfield could be crowded this year with those guys above plus tapia and desmond. I don’t like making trades until I see some expert auction drafts but I feel all the guys I got here are Ok value for a keeper league

This is my final team going into auction barring any unforseen injuries

For a Grand Total of $199 which leaves me $61 for the draft for 3 pitchers 1 catcher who I won’t spend more than $2 on. I got hedges last year for $1 1 2nd baseman 1 outfielder and 1 utility

Harper Freeman Rizzo Marte Yelich maybe JD Martinez Billy Hamilton Kershaw Scherzer Darvish Quintana Greinke Javier Baez votto, myers braun mccutchen cespedes cain posey villar bruce carlos santana all available

So question. How does team look? I can pretty much add any 1 player I want in draft or 2 mid tier guys. What would you look to do here? Won this league last year, actually 5 times but never repeated and I only use your rankings and projections because I find most of the time, yours are the most accurate. Thanks for your website. Looking at a position that only has a handful of viable players, it seems like his value would be even greater when half the player pool is eliminated. Also, I’m in a 1-year keeper league, so drafting him would allow me to roster him through 2019. I’m thinking of reaching for him because of all this. Talk some sense into me….

  38. OaktownSteve says:

I’m conflicted about Rudy’s Trea Turner pick at 4. By taking him at 4 it seemed like he was chasing power a bit the rest of the draft. He really hasn’t got anybody who’s a lock to steal 20 bases besides Turner. He better hope Acuna is up early and runs a lot. Of course Turner could steal 70. There are a lot of eggs in the Turner basket. Of course we all will have a lot riding on our first round pick. I can’t decide how I feel about it. I understand it. I don’t think I would have made it though.

Another guy that I can’t get myself excited about drafting is Jose Ramirez. If last year was just a career year and the HRs dip back below 20, he’s going to look very overvalued as a 2nd rounder. I don’t trust him at all that high.

    • BJFOHOHL says:
      (link)

@OaktownSteve: My eye test tells me to like Ramirez more than I should. I just love how he really enjoys what he does. There is something with Cleveland , that feels like it started when Lindor came up. They love to play baseball and have fun doing it. Its contagious. Every time I watched Ramirez last year I liked what I saw. I know this has nothing to do with fantasy, just an observation.

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

@BJFOHOHL: I like him as a player, but the power last year was an outlier and if it regresses it’ll be impossible for him to return 2nd round $

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I like Trea a lot, and I would’ve taken him there too prolly for the thrill of it, but I might’ve chickened out and went Goldy… If Trea ‘just’ does what he did last year, he’s plenty valuable enough, and that was in what? 2/3 of a season? Who would’ve you went with in the 1st there?

I like Jose Ramirez, more than I thought I would…Much more of a Magoo-type player with the high floor and low ceiling…

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

Lately I’ve been seriously considering Giancarlo as high as 3. Hard to know what effect the league change will have or if he will DH some and if that will affect him. But what if he benefits from the park change? What kept you from moving Stanton higher?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Giancarlo was the other guy Rudy was debating, was between him and Trea… Ya know, I didn’t really consider Giancarlo a top 5 guy bc I want a few more steals (everyone in my top 5) or 25 more points on average (everyone above him in my rankings)… I could easily see him have another monster season of 50+ homers though… It’s tough call…

@OaktownSteve: The thing with Ramirez is that he’s extremely safe. Elite contact rate, above average speed, prime age, solid power, switch hitter with no platoon weaknesses to exploit, hits in a prime spot in a good lineup.

He doesn’t have to hit 29 homers again to return solid value. Something like 90/20/90/20/.300 would be plenty valuable. Perfect pairing with someone like Arenado or Stanton. Would give you a solid average base to add a one or two cheap donkeys (Trumbo, Duvall, etc.) in the later rounds.

@Big Magoo: There’s a lot of weight being put on what might be 15-17 steals considering he’s going in front of Freeman and Rizzo for instance.

@OaktownSteve: Rizzo is as steady as they come. You know what you’re getting with him. The scariest thing about him is the way that he crowds the plate and is always among the league leaders in HBPs. Not too hard to imagine him finding himself in a Freeman situation from last year.

I love Freeman too, but he still hasn’t really put together an elite season from start to finish. Think he could go .315/40/120 with health in that new park, but I want to see it first.

It’s all nitpicking anyway. They’re all top 20 players on my board.

I found some research that supports a little theory I was nursing in my own: the juiced ball disproportionately benefited players at the lower end of the power spectrum. It makes sense in that it really doesn’t matter if a ball travels 420 or 430 feet but 370 to 380 makes a big difference. If for some reason they take a little juice out of the ball, guys like Ramirez or Scooter might see disproportionate regression. And keep in mind that’s not just homers. Ramirez hit 56 doubles last year I think. If some of those are caught fly balls that impacts the counters. I think my spider sense is trying to warn me off some of these guys who had outlier seasons.

@OaktownSteve: I think there’s some truth to this theory, but it could affect players like Smoak, Zimmerman, and LoMo, i.e. established vets with surprising power spikes in the 30-32 year age range, more than players like Ramirez and Lindor. Many players experience natural power growth during their age 24/25 seasons.

      @OaktownSteve:

Also same research found juice in the ball. As if there was any doubt.

When you said “Ramirez hit 56 doubles last year I think” it reminded me of when I’m on the podcast saying something like “I think he had an .354 OBP three years ago in Double-A” like I’m guessing at something with the page in front of me open…

I’ll buy into your regression on juiced balls theory, but why are we thinking the juiced ball era is gonnsa end after one year?

      • BJFOHOHL says:
        (link)

@Grey: It’s been 2 1/2 years. Post all star break 2015 those balls started finding their way into games

@Grey: I don’t think it will. It the new steroid era and thats what fans want. Everybody likes a good dong

                (link)

@Grey: Maybe its how our conversations go but I just thought pitchers are the cuckolds in all this while they watch huge dongs flying all over the place and no one gets into the hall of fame from the era

        @Grey:

I looked at Ramirez like 10 minute before and was pretty sure that was the number but I don’t trust my middle aged brain.

I was just gonna say what you said…what if the ball stays bouncy? Certainly no reason to think it won’t. Or there’s this: the current live ball era began mid 2015. Apparently the baseball supply is often refreshed mid season. So possibly could have a first half like last year and then a different second half.

Anyhoo, there’s really no way to tell. Maybe I’ll look at more guys with longer track records and discount last year a bit?

What is inspiring confidence in Ramirez is he looks like Jose Altuve-lite… Solid AVG, solid counting stats, decent enough HRs (really much worse than Betts?) and solid steals (Betts again)…. If Jo-Ram put up Betts’ year with a better average it would shock you?

    So…..

What’s your take on this AZ Humidor crap? Some analysts (Scott White, Derek “the Coiff” Carty are full-on freaking out about it. Carty seems to have a bunch of data, which I guess is legit.

But do I really care about this? Enough to skip Goldy and try to grab one of Freeman-Rizzo-Votto in Rd 2? Am I less scared of Greinke now? Is Rudy/Steamer adjusting? Or is this much ado about nothing? (Going to try to have a Shakespeare reference on every comment this year and change my handle to “The Fantasy Bard”)

I saw that too…Scott White actually said on their video, “I’m moving Goldschmidt down from 3 to 11.” Really?

@Bryan: Sorry for the ridiculously long post. I’m spending way too much time going back and forth on this and my wife is threatening to leave me as a result. My son’s first words were LOOK UP. My dogs learned to walk themselves and I’ve ignored at least the last 13 calls from work.
This is dire, people. Help me get my life back.
