Last year, I won Tout Wars in a wire-to-wire cakewalk.  So, before the Tout Wars draft this Saturday, I prepared like any great champ would.  I took a page from Rocky Balboa and ran up a flight of stairs, hands raised in exultation.  I took a page from Ultimate Warrior and ordered a group of preteen girls to tighten the slack on a jump rope and shook it furiously.  Finally, I took a page from E.T. and draped myself in a blanket, squatted in a bicycle basket and had Rudy pedal me around our hotel room floor.  Did E.T. have anything to do with being a champion?  Not especially, but I was feeling nostalgic for some faux sentimentality and Ready Player One isn’t out yet.  In my mind, I was standing, arms raised, with a lone spotlight shining on me as Lin-Manuel Miranda sang how I was not going to throw away my shot at a repeat.  Only it wasn’t in my mind.  In our hotel room, Rudy shined an iPhone flashlight on me as we played a rather tinny version of Hamilton off YouTube.  I’m past patiently waitin’ I’m passionately mashin’ every expectation!  And I’m not throwing away my shot!  *clears throat*  “Um, Rudy, could you help me down from this Marriott end table?  I’m getting vertigo.”  Anyway, here’s my Tout Wars, NL-Only recap:

HEY, DIDN’T YOU WIN THIS LEAGUE LAST YEAR BY THE LARGEST MARGIN IN THE 20+ YEAR HISTORY OF THIS LEAGUE, AND BEAT EVERYONE BY SOMETHING LIKE 70+ HOMERS MORE THAN THE 2ND PLACE TEAM?

I’m glad you mentioned that, Mr. Al Bolden Caps, in a completely unprovoked manner.  I’m not looking to gloat (much), only to point out last year’s draft and how it relates to my draft this year.  It’s an “if it ain’t broke” scenario.  Last year, I spent $40 on Paul Goldschmidt, $30 on Trea Turner and $28 (!!!!) on Giancarlo.  You can see the parallels to this year’s team.  I wanted to dominate offense again, knowing I would go hard after Bryce.  There was no way I was not owning him.  In our 12-team NL-Only auction values (though, that link is AVG; Rudy made me OBP values for this draft), we have Bryce Harper as the top player at $41.  I would’ve likely went to $43 for him.  Of course, no one in the room forced a cojones check.  If Bryce Harper was on the Cubs, Andy Behrens would’ve opened the bidding with $67 and I would’ve never secured him.  Thankfully, Harper was like a Valentine’s hard candy and meant to “Be Mine.”  Your mileage may vary on how much you think my last year Goldschmidt pick equals this year’s Harper, but, as mentioned a prior thousand times, Rudy’s rankings are amongst the best in the business, and Harper’s #1 (with OBP).  This was an easy call for me, because it’s confirmation basis on how much I like Bryce this year, too.  Would it shock anyone if Bryce has one of those 110/45/125/15 seasons with a .450 OBP?

Know who else I like a lot this year?  “My Favorite Messiah” Rhysus Hoskins.  He could be Goldschmidt this year, and feels like the makings of my Giancarlo $28 (!!!!!!!!!!!) pick last year.  Giancarlo returned a lot more value than $28 (! + infinity) and samesies for Hoskins this year.  You’re lucky you’re not reading this recap in the same room as me because it’s getting me horny!

Finally, my 3rd baseman.  I’m just going to carelessly put down this Honus Wagner tobacco card by an open window–NOOOO!!!!  Torneado!!!  Are you kidding me?  Seriously, I have so much offense that Nolan Arenado is the last guy I talk about and he also happens to be a 110/40/125/2 guy with a .370 OBP.  I will now cackle like a madman.

OKAY, THAT WAS A SLIGHTLY CONVOLUTED GAME PLAN, BUT IF TREA TURNER IS NOW HOSKINS, GIANCARLO IS NOW THE BRYCE IS RIGHT AND ARENADO IS GOLDSCHMIDT OR SOMETHING.  WHO, PRAY TELL, IS LANE ADAMS?

Live with me for a second; here’s my end game values:

In short, my goals are a 32 in each category; I have a 42.9 in power.  I could lose Hoskins and be fine.  Knock on Alex Wood that never happens, but you feel me.  Metaphorical!  Please don’t touch me!  If you look at my offense and don’t see how stacked it is, you need to get your fantasy baseball goggles recalibrated.  Someone on Twitter said I overspent on Amed Rosario.  A) Ha.  B) Seriously, Ha!  C) There’s no C.  D) Seriously, there’s no multiple choice here of why I didn’t overspend on Rosario, but here’s 1) My auction value for Rosario is $11. 2) I needed some speed. 3) There’s no 3. 4) Rosario is set to hit eighth, until around the end of April when this fairly apparent thought crosses the Mets’ collective mind, “Rosario is our future leadoff hitter, why don’t we just hit him leadoff now?”

As for Lane Adams, this is funny (not funny).  On the Prospectonator (our tool that shows the stats for all rookie hitters and pitchers if they had a full season), has Lane Adams projected for 14 HRs and 31 SBs.  I know, I know, that’s lunacy, and ¡Acuna! will replace him, but Adams went 5/10 in only 109 ABs last year.  If he gets 250 ABs, I’d take that for a $1.  For you old school fantasy heads, Adams reminds me in looks and potential results to Drew Stubbs.

OKAY, OKAY, YOU’VE SPUN GOLD FROM WISPS OF YOUR MUSTACHE HAIR FOR YOUR OFFENSE, BUT CAN GREYPUNZEL LET HIS MUSTACHE HANG OVER HIS PITCHING SO NO ONE CAN SEE IT?

Out of 36 possible points last year in ERA, WHIP and Ks, I scored 30 points with a staff of Lackey, Samardzija, Chacin, and a $12 (!!!!!) Robbie Ray.  Again, your mileage may vary how much you think last year’s Robbie Ray reminds you of this year’s Jon Gray, but for starters (pun!), if Gray pitched anywhere else, he’d be a $25+ pitcher.  Gray is headed into his “when shizz gets gorgeous” third year and is projected for 200 Ks by everyone, if he gets the IP.  Now, if he gets the bounces at Coors, he could be the best thing in the Land of High Miles since Ubaldo.  As for the rest, Samardzija is innings and Ks as he was last year; I wrote a Michael Wacha sleeper; my couched excitement for Nick Pivetta is in my top 100 starters; Stratton is a Rudy fave, and on a ton of “Wow, this guy is showing me something” lists in the spring, and I drafted enough saves for around a 9 out of 12 points.  Maybe my golden mustache locks don’t hang fully over my pitching staff, but there’s some gold in their skills.

WHY DO YOU THINK THE OTHER ‘PERTS IN YOUR TOUT WARS LEAGUE ALLOWED YOU TO COME IN AND DO SAMESIES ON THEIR FACE?

That’s a great question like, “Why does every billboard of a DJ look like an In Memoriam?”  Could be a couple of things at work.  Some guys just have their own game plans.  They’ll come in, bid $40+ on Votto like he somehow wins them anything but OBP.  Or they’ll come in and bid $39 on Kershaw, even though that means if he gets injured their second best pitcher is Jason Vargas.  Maybe they’re too proud to follow my lead.  Or perhaps they just don’t believe in my previous year’s results, and allowed me to come in and do samesies.  If it’s the last scenario, it’s going to be a shame when it’s mid-May and I’m doing Here Comes the Hotstepper to another victory.

So, were there any takers when Rudy was peddling you? I imagine as champion you were very popular.

It looks like there will be just 1 Razz league, and we could use another owner to make it a 10-team league. Draft is 10 PM ET tomorrow. Just 18 rounds and weekly lineups, so not too much of a time investment.

there is another league drafting at 8 PM ET Tuesday, but currently has only 3 entries, so it seems unlikely to fill.

Hey grey. Had our draft on the weekend. Just wondering what you thought of it. 12 team keeper league. Yahoo 6×6 qs instead of wins

I don’t know much about onlies but that looks a sound team. Not just playing time but decent to good players up and down. I like how your only teams have that stretch of $5-19 players that never leaves you with some fifth outfielder. Almost all of these guys would go in a mixed league.

Having said that, I had to look up Lane Adams and I’m glad I did as my 50 round draft and hold is getting into the doldrums. Anybody who might play is starting to look good.

Looking for comments and advice on what I should target in upcoming rounds.

It is 12 team 5×5 roto league and we are in round 16 of 30 rounds.

Thinking of targeting maybe Lance Lynn, Lucas Gioloto for staters
Greg holland, Shane Greene for closers
Perhaps Michael conforto, kiermaier, Lewis Brinson for outfield
Maybe Ryon Healy, Logan Morrison, yonder Alonso for util.
I still have 2 catchers to get but so far only 7 top catchers have been selected, usual group.

    Anyway here it is:
    Need 2 catchers
    1b Freddie Freeman
    2b Jose Altuve
    Ss Paul Dejong
    3b Anthony Rendon
    Mi Eduardo Nunez
    Ci Miguel Sano
    Of Justin upton
    Of Ronald acuna
    Of trey Mancini
    Of
    Of
    Util

Sp Stephen Strasbourg, Luis Castillo, zack godley, Jamison taillon,
    Rp Felipe rivero, kelvin Herrera

Thanks as usual for advice help.

    Hi Grey-
Draft on sat. 12 Team H2H points. Pitching heavy. Steals only worth a point….

    C- Hedges
    1B – Freeman
    2B- Albies
    3B- Beltre
    Ss- Correa
    CI- Suarez
    MI- Baez
OF- Harper -Upton – Nelson Cruz- Kipnis- Polonco

SP – Ray- Paxton- Arrietta- Castillo- Mcculers- Snell- Mikolas- – Clevinger- VV- karns- Garrett – Garcia
( Virtually all SP get drafted).

Limited pickups once season starts, so multiple position eleg helps alot (Kipnis, Baez)

My question is, do I dump Hedges for:
    Mccann Grandal Alfaro Chironos

Hedges looks clueless still in ST. Aside from the HR, I can see him hitting .190.

Also any of these arms exciting enough to pickup and drop Jaime Garcia / Karns :

Tyson Rosss. Stratton – Marco Gonzalez- Junis

sorry for the long post, and thanks for any help!

This is definitely another championship team! Can’t believe you snagged Harper AND Arenado AND Rhys on one team. Rhysus Christ indeed!

Yesterday I asked you to help me decide between keeping $18 Rhyeezy over $4 Godley in a 12 team mixed roto, keep 7 forever ($3 inflation). I assume your reason for going with Rhys despite him being roughly market value compared to Godley is because he could easily go Goldy/Rizzo/Stanton on us and make that $18 (21 in 2019) look pretty cheap?

I’m pretty in love with that $4 Godley (I love Godley but also love how much flexibility it would give me in the draft), but am I just getting “too cute” with things trying to reason my way away from keeping a fairly priced super young 100/35/100/3-10 guy who won’t kill my average?

    Thanks!

Had my first draft last night! 12 team roto redraft, snaking at pick 9. Daily lineups with a fairly generous IP cap, so good RPs are valuable. What do you think? Any holes?

C – ALFARO (pick 29/29) – love the value there per your sleeper post
    1B – GOLDY (1)
    2B – DEE (3)
    SS – SEMIEN (17)
    3B – MACHADO (2)
    MI – ALBIES (12)
    CI – SHAW (9)
OF – MARTE (6) – I know I have Dee already but too much value to pass up in the 6th. I figure I can always trade Dee mid season
    OF – KHRIS (5)
    OF – MANICINI (15)
    OF – DESHIZZ (14)
    OF – CARGO (19)
    UTL – ALONSO

SP – VERLANDER (4) – Severino and Ray were jumped early.

@Grey: Thanks – yeah I agree. When I took Marte late there, I assumed I’d either trade Dee now or around ASB, when I should have a huge lead in SB (at least, I’d hope so). Is anyone worried about Bumgarner this year? His homers allowed went way up when he came back last year and wasn’t getting the swings and misses on his FB like he normally does.

I hate having to draft a top tier SP but I’m kinda forced to with the way the league scoring is set up, you need a top ten ace . If I pass on bumgarner/stras/degrom/Thor I may get Robbie Ray if I’m lucky but likely would end up with Nola as my SP1 which I’m afraid isn’t nearly enough in this league.

@FrankGrimes: no it’s 14 team h2h cats. but the cats are ERA, WHIP, SV, QS, HR, K/9….you need 7 starts each week….but playoffs are 2 week matchups so only 3.5 starts per week in playoffs.

I really don’t like mad bum either….but with the format I should probably take a SP in round 3 and Grey did rank mad bum 5.

              (link)

@Grey: Sorry if I’m being annoying. Just freaking out a bit with the draft on the horizon. So if you were in my shoes. Who are you taking? you can see the pitching settings above. it’s 14 team h2h. I pick 1st, going Trout obviously….I was thinking round 2 I’ll for sure take Abreu, he’ll be best available based on your ranks for offense. Are you taking a pitcher in round 3? I think before you’ve told me you would take a top 10 pitcher in this format. If that’s the case, are you going Stras?

this is where I get confused because the best pitcher on your rankings is mad bum, but you said you’d never take him. I know in a traditional format you would never take him, neither would I. I like to wait until round 5 on pitching, but feel like in this format maybe that’s a bad move.

@Grey: ok. I’m just misunderstanding what you’re saying in your rankings then. I think worst case scenario I’d be looking at Nola and Bauer as my 1-2 punch…can probably make it work somehow

@ElBoss: even coming back from injury last year, he wasnt that bad… a mid 3 era, not his fault his team sucked balls, they should be able to get some runs on the board this year, and he will step up as the ace of this staff, as the best world series mvp of our time!!! You always talk about being down on pitchers when they go deep into playoffs, bumgarner always shrugs you off thoug, what you think hes gonna do now that he got extra rest!!??

So with the draft being held on Staten Island I popped in for a bit. Mostly watched the mixed league but I wandered in to the periphery of the NL auction. Great lineup.

A few things I found amusing. The amount of “experts” pulling out draft guides printed in December was amusing. Lenny Melnick is 40% Bruce Vilanch 40% troll doll and 20% Billy Batts. Tristan Cockcrofts head needs it’s own Air Force for defense. Seriously that thing is as large as Mars.

  21. Love the squad (again), Grey. Listened in last year & happened to tune in again with you as Champ. The other “perts” response to the announcement of you as Champion was pathetic. A smattering of clapping, at best. Then I could in no way believe that they allowed your very similar format to play out again. Tristan showed a little dignity and hung in their a bit. But the others seemed to welcome their second dose of Albright. In truth, I think that their condescension spawns from the less than critical, dare I say, fun approach of the Razz site. Not life or death, boys. Lighten’ up! AND it was no fluke! Pulling for you Champ!

    Hi Grey,

Thanks for all your articles. I finally had my draft, and was going for potential since I didn’t have my 1st and 2nd round pick, which I traded last year.

    H2H Mix, 12 teams, 3 keepers
R, RBI, HR, SB, AVG, OBP, SB, TB, W, Ks, Qs, ERA, WHIP, Sv

    C – Welington Castillo
    1b – Encarnacion (k)
    2b – Murphy
    SS – Story
    3b – Arenado (k)
OF – Manicini, Polanco, I. Happ
    UTL – Justin Turner
    BN – Brett Gardner
    NA – Ronald Acuña

SP – Stras (k), Jon Gray, T. Walker, Aaron Sanchez, Wacha, Mikolas, Trevor Williams, Newcomb
    RP – Hand, Rivero

My infield looks good, but with my OF I went with potential. I’m a little low on HR and RBI.

For Sps also with potential, hopefully Gray, Sanchez and Wacha can provide stable options.

Since I will move Acuña to NA, should I add another SP or RP.
    Karns or Folty?
Treinen, Brach , Rodney or Bedrosian.

    thanks !!!

In a 12 team auction with a $300 cap would you keep:
Springer at $49 for 2 years
    L. Weaver at $10 for 2 years—-keeping Severino and Nola
Margot at $10 for 2 years
Anderson at $10 for 2 years
Desmond at $12 for one year
Edwin Diaz at $10 for two years—have Chapman at $15 for one year also and plan to keep
Conforto at $10 for two years
Already keeping Severino,Nola,Chapman,Abreu,Segura, and Castellanos. I need TWO from the above. Thanks.

Auction values change depending on # of teams — $39 seems high tho, so Castillo — Happ over Diaz

12 team h2h with K’s, OPS, QS, and K/9 as extra categories. auction league players get 3 year contracts, can be dropped however at no penalty. we’re doing the RFA where a player who’s been owned for about to be his 4th year can be bid on (owners can match, if no bid player can be new contracted at same price for 3 years). total predraft budget is 244, total budget after draft is 336. max keepers predraft is 18. total roster after draft is 25. h2h. won this league last year even with low steals a usually losing K’s badly. the other hitting categories are that good.

    1. trade kershaw (52, would about to start 3 year new contract) for freeman (3/3 31 but i can match bids next year)? this would free up money for other less expensive pitching and my 1B is done, all i’d need is one or two steals guys for util spot and BN guy

    2. all of these are out there but we can only make THREE total bids, not 3 players, THREE total bids. clearly i need speed and SP depth. i’ll use rudy’s QS/OPS rater and then adjust it by 1.2538 (our 336 auction cap vs 260 standard)

mookie (62, however, nobody views mookie as good as that number in regular leagues, it’s quite possible i could bid MUCH lower here and maybe win, say 45ish)
what’s the best three here to bid on (at these type amounts). with my keepers i probably can only win one at most anyway.

It’s that time, the family/friends league drafted last night and I’m curious for your opinions. League is a 12 team 6×6 Yahoo roto using the stats (R/HR/RBI/SB/AVG/OPS and W/QS/K/ERA/WHIP/SV+H). Positions below. We can keep 3 for up to 3 years and mine were Goldy, Beni, and Paxton. Team ended up as:

    C: Chirinos
    1B: Goldschmidt
    2B: Schoop
    3B: Gallo
    SS: Story
    OF: Betts
    OF: Benintendi
OF: Souza (until Acuna comes up)
    Util: Eaton
    Util: Beckham
    BN: Choo
NA: Acuna, Robles, Meadows, Andujar, Tucker

    SP: Darvish
    SP: Paxton
    SP: Wood
    RP: Chapman
    RP: Rivero
    P: Madson
    P: Barraclough
    P: Green
    P: Bradley
    BN: Bauer, Wacha, Clevinger, Corbin
    NA: Buehler

I didn’t intend to end up with two Boston OF on my team, but Mookie was still on the board at pick 1.5 and definitely the best option available. I’m maybe a little heavy on pitching but with a high IP cap and SV+H, this league tends to load up on starters and middle relievers to pad counting stats. And with daily moves and a high move limit I usually fish the waiver wire hard early in the season hoping to hit on a hitter or two. Fingers crossed for ACUNA! to be all he can be.

Dude, did you see this from Gionella on BP this morning?: “Can you win without spending on an ace? Of course you can. Grey Albright of Razzball did exactly that last year, winning with a relatively cheap Ray and Jeff Samardzija anchoring his staff. Albright mirrored this strategy in 2018, rostering Samardzija yet again and pairing him with a $12 Jon Gray. If this works for Albright, many of the experts should seriously reconsider if rostering a $25+ ace is more of a path to mediocrity than success. I am not immune to this criticism; I bought Kershaw.”

    A) I heard Craig Mish and Jim Bowden rip your team this morning on their Sirius fantasy show. Winners worry about winning and Losers worry about winners. :-)

    B) I have read your projections but in an OBP league would you keep Pham or Schoop if they have the same keeper value. Already keeping Betts, Turner, Springer and Kluber.

      • Mikey D says:
        (link)

Yeah it is comical that Bowden is on the station literally day and night.

Does it matter if the league is a 10-team 5×5 Yahoo league with OBP replacing batting average?

How does Bowden have a job talking about fantasy? I mean, I’d guess he knows real baseball, but does he know anything of fantasy? It matters, there’s other rankings on that page, can see straight OBP values too on that page

          • Mikey D says:
            (link)

Yeah I wonder that myself with that channel. They always pair the fantasy “expert” with a former player or GM. Like you said I am sure Bowden or a Cliff Floyd know everything about the real game but fantasy is a totally different animal.

    Grey!!

    Great tout wars draft.

    a. In Kampala in Hotel Africana for a 3-day meeting, then Friday I fly away for some leave. We’re planning on going to Athens for the Easter break when the children are off from school.

    b. Have a H2H points draft tomorrow (I know not your ideal format). Drafting #3 overall. Trout may fall to me because pitchers are highly valued in these leagues, especially high-ranking pitchers. Will be using Malamoney’s high tech Excel document which has been adjusted for CBS H2H points leagues. In addition, there is a feature in the excel document which predicts whether a player is worth his ADP ranking or is overvalued. In that format, Scherzer ranks #2, just behind Trout.

    c. My RCL has 12 members! Yes. We draft Thursday morning (in East Africa). Really looking forward to the draft.

    Cheers,
    Ante

Grey, Its been too long brother!!!! as the bear awakens from his hibernation it is I who returns to the mountaintop looking for the delicious nectar of fantasy baseball….Love that Folty value…he may be someone I target late in mixed leagues this year. I kept weaver (20th) goldy(1st) ozuna (9th) and abreu (2nd) in a league, and im thinking I should of kept Grey (15h) instead of one of those instead? what u think..I truly think the whole coors thing makes him a tough week h2h matchup guy, even with the peripherals so good there.

When are the Al only rankings coming out?

Brocktune’s cousin Jorge Polanco getting popped for 80 games. MIN should play Escobar at SS, I would think. Pretty sure you had Escobar down for 440 ABs prior to this happening, that’s not changing at all? Nothing was changed with Escobar (I don’t think) after the LoMo signing, where I thought maybe Escobar no longer had a consistent spot in the lineup.

I saw you already moved Polanco down. I got Escobar crazy late in a 12 team NFBC in early Feb and I’m pretty happy about that at the moment.

    • Grey

Yeah, popped for the Stanzolol, or popped for popping Stanzolol… I updated my rankings like you saw… I left Escobar where he was with Morrison, so this Polanco news didn’t affect Escobar’s projection/ranking — Still seems like a 440 ABs guy

“Oh, did I win?” *cackle cackle*

As your personal ice bucket, it’s my job to inform you that Familia looks seriously cooked.

Gray’s peripherals home/away were pretty close last year. His results were actually much better at Coors (ERA 4.06 road, 3.13 home).

I looked at a lot of drafts this week. One thing I noticed: teams who end up with Turner in the first round are ending up with some pretty helter skelter drafts a lot. I would say half of them at least end up with Joey Gallo. The draft story seems to go…ok I got Turner, now I have to chase power…oh shit I need somebody else who steals bases… They seem to end up with a lot of specialists rather than balanced players. It’s been a long time since a guy who was a speed first player ended up in the 1st round. I think it sets up a whole different kind of mindset. Not sure if it’s good or bad and it’s not universal but just an observation.

    A couple of bold predictions

Billy Hamilton and Jose Peraza will steal fewer than 70 bases between them. The handwriting is beginning to be on the wall. The Reds are already going to a four man rotation in the OF. They’re pushing Senzel to SS as fast as they can. They have to realize that you really can’t compete with those two awful bats in the line up. I think this is the year that Hamilton becomes a Dyson type 4th OF. Peraza will be a utility guy by midseason. I’ll give Hamilton 45 steals and Peraza 20.

Javier Baez is going to breakout this year. The Cubs are funny. I heard Maddon talking about how the Cubs have two “every day players” in Rizzo and Bryant. He was saying what Baez needed to do to join the every day club and the word was consistency. And what do the Cubs want him to do? Work on his defense. Cut down errors, work on his footwork, make all the routine plays to go with the spectacular. Win the GG at 2b every year for the next 10. And Baez goes out and does it. Madden praising Baez for the work he’s done this spring, taking the next step etc. And this all means PAs. I think he can get to 600 PAs. I think over the last two years we’ve seen the flashy glove and we forget that as a prospect what everybody talked about was the power. They weren’t sure if he was going to stick at SS or have to go to2B or even 3B. Coming into his age 25 season should perhaps see improving power. I think a 30 homer 15 steal season is there with the PAs. He’s hit .276 over the last two years. He doesn’t walk and he Ks a bunch so what.

    • The Great Knoche says:
      (link)

@OaktownSteve: Funny you mention the “Oh Shit I need someone else with steals”, that’s the whole reason I took Deshizz in NFBC. Thought I was fairly balanced grabbing straight power, except Odor. Then I compared where I was on steals vs other teams and went Oh Shit.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Okay on Familia, and SAGNOF, but do you like the team overall or no? Think Hamilton and Peraza will be close to 85 SBs between them, and Baez will break out, totally agree… A Trea Turner draft takes a certain kind of strategy, it’s not a deal breaker, you just need to not drift too much into the Khris/Chris Davis school of drafting for the entire rest of your offense…

      • SteveNZ says:
        (link)

This is a follow up to Laura’s comment above. I’ve said this for years, I’ve won a lot of leagues over the years, I think I’m on solid ground. When the league is loaded with offense, SP is LESS valuable. The “expert” community and even the sharps in the NFBC have it wrong in my opinion. They see the amount of offense in the league and assume that you have to get the aces. Wrong wrong wrong. You’ll recall a few years back, Grey, you and I went back and forth on when to get SPs. This was when the league was devoid of power. In those days, I advocated getting more early pitching. Not necessarily Kershaw in the 1st. But ace pitching was also cheaper in those days so you not only got value on the aces, you were on the correct side strategically.

Here’s the thing, in a power rich environment, you are going to have some shitty pitchers at the back end of your rotation that are going to drag your aces pitchers rates back to the pack. 2 aces plus 2 pieces of crap get you down to league average net. There are only two counting stats for SPs and one of them is the toughest to predict. And there are some high K guys late. I’ve been capping Bauer a little bit, but could he K as many guys as Bumgartner this year or more? Of course.

The amount of pitching going early this year is ridiculous.

    Hope the ball stays juiced.

      • Squat Cobblers says:
        (link)

@Grey: Agree 100% with you and Oak. Along these same lines, I see in all three of my 15-team NFBCs the Trout owner follows up with 2 SPs! I really don’t get it. Trout is awesome but your job as Trout owner is not done. I feel like going Trout/SP/SP essentially gives away the offensive advantage of drafting Trout to begin with.

    Heeeeellllllloooooo Grey!!

I looked at your Tout War auction results yesterday and immediately was blown away by your hitting. That squad would compete in a 10-team league. Considering how strong your hitting is, your pitching looks promising. And…. you actually have more than 1 closer with a job right now. Good Luck!!

Our 17th Year keeper league action is next Sunday and I have a lot to plan for. This is my first post of the year, so I apologize for it’s length. I will provide daiquiris though, maybe even top-shelf =).

    NL-Only 10-Team H2H 5×5 (OBP), 1 CA, $280, Keep 5

    A) Right now my keepers are: GOLDY (44), Knebel (1), Weaver (3), Arcia (4), and Brinson (2) for a total of $54. This leaves me a lot of money to work with, but I have a lot to do. Other options would be Realmuto (5), Hendricks (15), Villar (13), Schebler (3), and Tapia (1).

    B) Given there’s not a lot of big power left, should I keep GOLDY at $44, or go ahead and try to trade for Trea (25). It is an OBP league and I lerve GOLDY, but Turner’s cost is so much lower, and allows me the $$ to pay for Hoskins and Acuna who will both go for more than book value.

    C) If I’m not trading GOLDY for Trea, I’m thinking of getting one of Marte/Hoskins. Each will go around $35. I will need to then put together a bunch of 15/15 guys.

Big name bats from your TOP Guys available are: Marte, Hosmer, Murphy, C. Taylor, Cain, Pollock, Cespedes, Pham, Hoskins, Cutch, Braun.

    D) Pitching goes for a lot in our league. Kershaw will go near $50, and there will be a lot of $16-20 in your league that will go for $25-30. For SP, I’m thinking Castillo and Godley mixed in with a few from: Chatwood, Wacha, Limet. Stratton, Pivetta. If I get the right relievers, I could be competitive every week. There will be challenging weeks against the couple of teams loaded up on high-priced SPs.

Pitchers: Kershaw, One of Greinke, Darvish, Castillo, Quintana, Arrieta,

    E) Closers being kept are Knebel, Rivero, Hand, Raisel, and Vizcaino. I would like to get another solid CL to pair up with Knebel, but besides Kenley (will go for $30+) Davis seems like the only bet to keep the job if he stays healthy. I was thinking of getting 5 hand-cuff guys instead of paying $18+ for Doolittle, Morrow, etc.

    F) I am determined to get 2 – 3 more of the Prospects/Rookies even if it means sacrificing this year. I can always trade away during our 4-week “No Veto” trade time before All-Star break for some studs if I’m in it.

    G) I will have to compete with some other owners coming in with a lot of $ including one team with Bellinger (3), Rivero (3), Shaw (6), Nola (16), Ray (14) for a total of (42).

    H) Your yearly daiquiris are on their way.

Thanks for all the great work you do to help us out!!!

  63. OaktownSteve says:
    (link)

I like your team. Not only did I like that you came out aggressively on Harper and Arenado (I think you got two of the first 4 or 5 guys off the board), but you also got pretty good prices on them considering how the rest of the auction went. As far as the pitching goes, Mish for instance spent 69 on Scherzer and Syndergaard and I think you beat him in W and K and saves right out of the gate.

A couple of guys I think under the radar that were strong buys in Schebler and Jose Martinez. I think in only leagues, strong per PA contribution makes a huge difference. Better to chase 400 good ABs than 550 crappy ones. To that end, I like the Lane Adams at a buck. He’ll get 2-3 worth of full time work plus 4th OF status and he was more than respectable. Preston Tucker is in the mix so the ABs will be a little short but you might be able to get something on the waiver as he’s in the UTIL.

I haven’t been on Hoskins but I haven’t been out on him either. One of those players I couldn’t commit to so I’ve been out at that price. But I see the pick. Not a huge fan of Braun but he puts up his numbers. PT could get a little tricky for him. There’s the potential he falls on the short side of a 1B platoon with Thames. Heard Milwaukee brass and a beat writer both say that Domingo is the RF. Yelich has mostly played LF this spring which is an indicator because they aren’t running Braun out to right. I think Braun is also a little bit of a trade risk. He might fit as a DH in the AL and they could go with a Thames/Aguilar platoon at 1st or even give Shaw time back at first and use Perez at 3B a little. Brew could use arms. In hindsight I would have much preferred a shot at Acuna at 21. But it’s nitpicking a little. Braun will in all likelihood give you his baseball card numbers.

Love Stratton and Pivetta late. You know I liked Pivetta last year just from a stuff standpoint. I think with increase command and some new wrinkles in his arsenal he can bring the HRs down which makes him viable. Ryu is another good buy. I like Wacha. Like Folty.

The other team I like is Lenny Melnick. I hear him on the radio sometimes. Guy has a screw loose but I find him entertaining. He’s one of the few analysts out there who spends most of his time talking about the bottom third of the player pool rather than the first 5 rounds.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Lenny’s a really good guy in person… He makes you feel welcome, unlike some guys in the league who look at you and it seems like they’re piecing together who you are… That makes me good to hear your feedback, I’m in a Rudy/Grey bubble sometimes, and I know we like my team, but it’s good to hear it passes a smell test… And, fwiw, I don’t LOVE Braun, but if he gives me 20/10 with 400 ABs, I’m okay with it, I’m in the camp that if he’s healthy, he’s likely pushing 475+ ABs, but he’ll miss a month likely…

        @Grey:

Yeah like I said, the Braun comment is more a nitpick. You can easily take 6 teams out of that auction and say…yeah no chance.

I’m glad to hear you say that about Melnik. I do like him. I work from 5 am on Saturdays in the store and I put the fantasy radio channel on Sirius while I stock shelves. He’s on with his wife of his girlfriend, Andrea, and they kind of crack me up. It’s a little like if you gave John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman a fantasy show plus cocktails.

All the ‘perts say they same things. Not many go out on a limb. That Liss dude at least sticks to his opinions. It’s like no one wants to stand out and be wrong. I’d rather hear about guys like Jose Martinez and Pivetta than hear yet again how you need an ace.
Then again most people that listen are prolly “beginners”especially compared to you!

        @FrankGrimes:

I like to consume a lot of fantasy content from Feb to Mar as white noise because they cover the player pool where as the MLB channel talks a lot about contracts, HoF voting etc. When real baseball starts, all I listen to is games. It’s amazing how many guys on the radio seem completely clueless on fantasy.

          Ya I’m totally the same.
I don’t listen to squat after fantasy football ends then ramp up for b-ball drafts.
Then it’s all games from there.
That Sirius channel is ok but damn if they don’t have some huge douchebags on there. Ray flowers is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Flowers and his partner are unlistenable. I met Flowers at the infamous Rick Wolfe party with Grey and the crew in Phoenix a couple years back. Actually wasn’t too bad in person. Erickson is not bad. I’ve met him a couple of times in Vegas for NFBC drafts. If I’m not mistaken I think he wears a Lakers jersey that says “FLETCH” on the back.

Grey, my over the internet friend, RCL #71 drafts tonight at 8:30 EDT. The league has gone from 12 teams, to 10, to 12 and now back to 11. What are people doing, haha. What happens if we don’t have 12 at draft time? I’ve tried to be patient asking this question while waiting on guys to join, but draft day seems like a good day to ask.

    Hey Grey,

Would you keep either Greinke ($13) or Verlander ($17) as a a keeper in a $260 budget, or just try and get them at those prices in the Auction?

Also, for hitters (can keep 2) I’m leaning towards Acuna and E. Rosario at $5 each over paying for Freeman at $38

    Thanks!

A moment of fatherly pride. I’ll admit that I am deliberately making my kids into baseball junkies. We play baseball, we go to A’s games, we play APBA and they do a fantasy team with me every year. Yesterday, I let them run their own NFBC 15 teamer. My ten year old is pretty sharp so she drove. My 6 year old knows every player on every team. I had to make a rule that if they couldn’t agree on a pick then they had to take turns having the final say. I helped keep them on task so they would be looking ahead at who was going to be available and to be ready when their turn came. They got sniped a couple of time which actually prompted tears, but they held it together and made the first 12 picks completely on their own. After that the 6 year old was pretty fried and it got deep fast so I started giving them 5 players to choose from in each round and they made the final decision. I taught them well about waiting on pitching. We’ll have to work on the catchers (my son loves Sal Perez). Here’s their team in draft order

    Betts
    Benintendi
    Rendon
    Schoop
    Myers
    Baez
    Sal Perez
    Domingo
    Bauer
    Richards
    Gardner
    Morton
    Snell
    Montgomery
    Shane Greene
    Dickerson
    Kingery
    Hanley
    Solarte
    ERod
    Gyorko
    Vazquez
    Wong
    Robertson, D
    Flaherty
    Cordero
    Fister
    Boyd
    Bauers

That’s awesome! The team on the other hand–Kidding! Looks like a shallower team than 15 teams, so that’s good… I love the floor picks on hitting, very solid base… Pitching could be wonky, but everyone’s pitching is wonky, so I have no problem with it…

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

I think it’s funny that I ended up with two shares of Bauer. I think they ended up with some razz influence as they watched all the Greytoons.

I probably coaxed them a bit towards the Jordan Montgomery pick. I’ve heard nothing but good on him and feel like he can improve on what was already a pretty good debut. The cause for hope is I was reading how his change up has always been his best pitch and he mysteriously lost the feel for it last year. Apparently that was the focus of his off season and he says he’s rediscovered it. Pretty good numbers last year for two pitch pitcher. I scouted about 5 starts of his last year. Really like the mechanics. I think he’s going to be a very good control command guy. He’s tall and I would guess the extension accounts for the low to mid 90 fastball playing up a bit. Should get plenty of run support. Looks like he’s a potential inning eater too.

Hey Grey so I finally decided my keepers in my 10 team points league. Each time gets 5 keepers mine are : Ian happ, kris Bryant, Luis Castillo, yu darvish and Gary Sanchez. Looking for a little advice for my first couple rounds of the draft. I have the 10th pick overall. The rounds are looking as follows – rizzo Abreu jd cruz Yelich merrifield cano Longoria Shaw mccutchen Carlos Santana will Myers segura Hosmer Duvall carpenter upton Thames moustakas Khris Davis Pham are the first bunch of players all projected over 1000 points. I doubt scherzer or sale will be available by my turn but Verlander carrasco and Strasbourg might be available as well. My question is do you think I should reach for a Wilson Contreras or salabador Perez (they’re both projected around 960 points) or one of those pitchers or should I focus on a ss or of even if I would most likely be reaching for ss? As of now I’m thinking I will hopefully get to pick two out of mccutchen upton carrasco and Verlander but curious on your thoughts thanks Grey!

@RomaPizzaStuart: Oh you already have Sanchez, why draft Perez?

      • RomaPizzaStuart says:

@Cram It: totally hear ya cram there’s strict roster limits and 2 catchers is one of them and I figured if Contreras could get
OF eligibility he would be good there and the difference between him and Perez compared to the rest is a significant points drop anyway. It does stink to think of drafting two catchers in the first three rounds though because Sanchez will
Count as my 3rd round pick

Lookin to repeat with the thunder! That’s a good looking lineup. I drafted Arenado, Hoskins, and Rosario on a team last week, so we’ll be praising/commiserating on those guys together. You grabbed a couple of guys that I recommended last week in Martinez and Frazier too. Nice buys there. Your top three bats should take you pretty far. Gettin a Rockie catcher for a buck is never a bad play too.

I think that’s a solid staff on the cheap. Not super high on the Shark, but he shouldn’t implode in San Fran. Should be a decent WHIP asset too. Should get a bunch of Ks from Gray, and Stratton looks like a good matchup play. Paid up a bit for Wacha, but I think he’ll return that value. I’m in on him this year too (just one of three players that I own in both of my leagues). So far, so good.

@Grey: Yeah, I like Martinez too. His biggest question mark is playing time, but I think he’ll get his with only a banged up Carpenter and Gyorko in the way.

Another guy that I mentioned last week that I think could bust out is Brinson. People seem to be a bit down on him due to his rough debut, but he tore up AAA last year. Has an easy 20/20 skill set, even in Miami. They’re talking about hitting him leadoff. Nice post-hype discount. Think the change of scenery could benefit him.

@SteveNZ: Hey Steve! Good to see you around these parts again. I think that Keuchel is similar to SPs like Hendricks and Cueto. Keuchel is more of an extreme GB pitcher than those two, but all of them are control-oriented, contact managers. All have had some durability issues too. Don’t expect 200+ Ks from him (even though he did that in 2015 with volume), but the ratios should be solid, and he obviously has fantastic win potential on the Astros. I just like Hendricks and Cueto a bit more at their current price points since they’re cheaper. Keuchel is a boring, but solid option though.

I like Seager, Beltre, and Suarez at 3B/CI. Think they’re all being undervalued. Beltre’s a bit trickier in a 15 teamer due to durability issues, but the skills appear to still be there.

@JMAC: Mini update I think it would take my 12th rounder instead of 18th. or could just get Encarnacion and Marte instead of Abreau for Carasco.

        Talking to myself. Thanks!

Grey, i read your comment earlier about Trea strategy. I think he will fall to me at 9. I was going to come back at 16 with JD. What do u mean about K and Chris Davis school of drafting? Dont grab a bunch of big homer bad avg guys if u draft Trea? I was going to take power most rounds and speed toward the end of draft.

Don’t go lopsided for power just bc you got nice SB/AVG guy up front

See Andy Behrens recap? Nice mention in there. Good stuff.

Retired from the industry, beaten and humbled.

Finally got to see all the teams. Like yours and Gardner the best.

Who do you like better for 4th or 5th outfielder based on HR SB and average. Kiermaier or Gardner. Thanks Grey

I can keep 4 of the following in a 12 team roto league. Thoughts?

    J-Ram ($5) — keeping him for sure
Machado ($30) – would go for $50 prob with keeper inflation
Bryce ($40) – would prob go for 60-70
    Pham ($10)
    Bregman ($10)
    Olson ($10)

    THANK YOU
    Castellanos ($10)
    Giloto ($1)
