The save vulture is a scavenger bird.  They see weakness in others’ misfortune.  A closer goes down or struggles and the save vulture swoops in and gnaws on the closer’s handcuff.  Peck, Brandon League, peck.  The save vultures are indigenous to rural and metropolitan areas, especially if a trade is in progress.  Goodbye, Rauch.  Hello, Drew Storen, Tyler Clippard and Sean Burnett.  Save vultures have trouble reproducing because they’re usually overweight guys who would prefer to listen to sports news than what the girl they’re dating is talking about.  “How does my manicure look?”  “Very pretty, Joel Hanrahan.”   “Did you just call me, Joel Hanrahan?”  “No.”  Kevin Gregg, Kerry Wood, Joakim Soria any of them can be traded in the next 24 hours.  If you need saves, there won’t be many saves coming into the league after the trade deadline.  If you need closers, now is the time to swoop, save vultures.  Anyway, here’s some more players to buy or sell this week in fantasy baseball:

Domonic Brown – If I keep talking about Domonic, I’m gonna have to do a spin-off blog, Razzbrown.  My Domonic Brown fantasy is clickable.

Tyler Colvin – I told you to pick him up on June 18th.  Since then, 19/9/20/.250/1.  Yeah, that’s better than Werth, Vlad, Torii, Grandy, Alfonso and a ton of other guys.

Chris Denorfia – By the time you read this he might already be cold and not worth owning.  There’s a difference between someone like Colvin and Denorfia.  Denorfia is a random outfielder who just happens to be hot, Colvin’s actually decent.

Andres Torres – Why do you make me talk about the same guy for three weeks and then by the time you pick him up he’s no longer good?  This is a trust exercise.  Fall back into my arms.  I promise to keep my mustache to myself.

Brett Wallace – Here’s what I said this morning, “Getting passed around…” “…like a trollop…” “Berkman” “is” “different cities.”   My Zagat quote skills are strong!  Here’s my Brett Wallace fantasy without the clunky quotes.

Jon Jay – His minor league numbers look like he’s unstartable against lefties (.180 vs. the same side, .404 vs. righties), but he’s actually relieved Rasmus vs. southpaws because he’s hitting the scrammy-handed at a .474 clip.  But, as I tell the ladies, beware the small sample size.  Jon Jay should get exploited the more he sees the ‘ones who need special scissors.’  That makes Jay a platoon guy without an injury.  Grab him now since he’s hitting everything and La Russa seems to like him, but don’t be surprised if it’s short-lived.

Travis Snider – Time to get randy on Travis.  He’s due to finally return from his sore right wrist.  Usually I’d be worried about a wrist injury, but Snider pulled a Kotchman and has been recuperating since May 15th.  His wrist better be, uh, better by now.  Plus, who couldn’t love a guy who resembles this guy?

Travis Wood – Sticking with the Travis theme… There is no wrong, there is no right… The circle has one side, side, side… Wait, wrong Travis theme.  So how much can Wood chuck if Wood could maintain his BABIP?  A bunch, but it seems unlikely. Wood gets the Pirates next and he’s pitched well enough where you can take a flyer on him.

Scott Olsen – Yesterday’s game picked up right where he left off as a respectable number five fantasy starter.  He gets the Diamondhacks next, that’s a ‘Yes’ with a dollop of ‘Please.’

Brett Myers – With a line of 3.10/1.22/113 on the year, you should’ve really grabbed him four months ago, but it’s not too late.

Michael Wuertz – Bailey’s not getting traded, but he’s also not getting healthy.

Danny Valencia – Grab him if you’re hurting for a corner infidel, but his Kevin Maas-shaped candle might’ve already burned out.

Will Rhymes – SAGNOF!

Logan Morrison – Just went over my Logan Morrison fantasy a few days ago.  Nothing’s changed — LoMo Hitado!

Ryan Raburn – Green Raburn asks, “Magglio Ordonez is so hurt he _____________” However you fill in that blank, Raburn has pop and should see playing time.

Edison Volquez – Don’t be the person that says in the comments, “You can’t sell Volquez!  He’s not worth anything!”  As I said in the beginning of the year, the Sell isn’t always literal.  It also means to drop him.  In non-keepers, you let someone else see if Volquez can figure it out.

Troy Glaus – Playing first base has helped him stay in the lineup.  Unfortunately, you probably wish he were hurt for the last two months.

Dan Uggla – July was his biggest month since May of 2008.  It was his first month since then that he had an average over .300.  He currently sits at 22 homers.  Maybe he has another good week, but he’s never kept up the rate he’s currently on and I don’t think he suddenly will.  I wouldn’t trade him for your nana’s Jell-O mold collection, but I’d listen to offers.

  1. brad says:

    Just did a grab on Storen and co. where I had room. Hopefully they won’t be as disappointing as the title band’s self-titled debut.

  2. big o says:

    not so sure if volquez is still the “poison pill” nominee of the year ,
    but , surely , it’s still early enough for someone in your league to believe that he’s worth the risk , for his magnificent up-side .

  3. AL KOHOLIC says:

    ha,ive had torres,travis wood and colvin a while now,grabbed storen clippard and breslow yesterday,grabbed brown 5 days ago,dropped glaus a week ago and volquez yesterday,still holding uggla ,steve wont part with cano,offered v mart and storen for hammels,im actually overloaded with closers(yes im a fat saves vulure),but i shut the computer enough to keep the romance ticking,oh these needy women.oh and storen or-just kidding

  4. Simply Fred

    simply fred says:

    Yes, I am capable of learning beyond the age of 60…

    Yes, I am capable of learning beyond the age of 60…

  5. El Famous Burrito says:

    I like the nickname L-Mo better. It leaves you wide open for Sesame Street and fire-related puns.

    Shit, I’m supposed to ask a question here…um, er…aha! Would you have any moral problems with pulling a Francisco Rodriguez (LAA) Fast One on an unsuspecting owner?

  6. Daniel says:

    I need trade advice:

    I need to improve my starting pitching, so in a move that would shake up the dynamic of my team (essentially trading offense for pitching), I would send:

    Ichiro Suzuki, Carlos Quentin, Buster Posey, and Jonathan Papelbon

    Dan Haren, David Price, Ben Zobrist, and Hunter Pence

  7. Hitman says:

    Drop Bruce for Brown in a keeper league?

  8. AL KOHOLIC says:

    anyone here an update on zolbrist yet?

  9. Howard says:

    @Grey Thanks for the laughter. So that’s I haven’t been reproducing! Too busy looking for saves!
    I’ve been doing my best Ron Popeil imitation all year with Napoli but I’ve been looking at Montero and Santana on waivers like a vulture on Storen. Is that eh or yea?

  10. dj says:

    would you pick up colvin to drop any of these guys (12 team mixed, h2h)

    -angel pagan
    -alexei (have jose reyes also)

  11. Eddy says:

    Travis Snider blurb= f’mazing

  12. Santos says:

    Which side wins this trade?

    10 team Keeper League (keep all players every year)

    Werth, Gardner, Dom Brown

    Crawford, Niese, Snider

  13. AL KOHOLIC says:

    thanks again,ill drink one for you boss

  14. AL KOHOLIC says:

    rangers get christian guzman,might increase his runs but

  15. dj says:

    also, should i be starting alexei daily over jose reyes at this point?

  16. Grey

    Grey says:

    @dj: Nope

  17. @Howard: It’s true. Every time my wife wants sexy time, I’m all like: “Hey babe, yeah you look good but Wuertz or Clippard?” Not far from the truth…

    In inconsequential trade news, Blue Jays just got Mike Jacobs. Good for your AL-Only Razzball team.

  18. Phillip says:

    A keeper league where top 10 are kept regardless of round would you take this offer

    Give up Jose Reyes and get Elvis Andrus and Andrew McCutchen?

  19. Grey

    Grey says:

    @3FingersBrown: Who are the Blue Jays emulating, the Royals?

  20. Steve says:

    @AL KOHOLIC: Grey might be happy to trade Cano for a second-hand Ping driver, but you’ll have to do better than that with me ;-)

  21. Chuckles Tiddlesworth says:

    Sell Uggla, huh? Now Danny Boy certainly won’t hit .300 in a month again … but, darn it, Grey, you don’t ever get Uggla thinking .300. He will still ding and BIR. And who you gonna have play 2B or mid-infidel, Barmes? That’s some Buh-fUggla advice, my man.

  22. Dumbmutt says:

    Best news of the year! Bay to DL woot

  23. AL KOHOLIC says:

    @Steve: i do have a ping driver,it used to hit the ball real well,not so much now that i play 5 times a year

  24. You Can Call Me Ray Or You Can Me Jon Jay says:

    Jon Jay. The man with small name complex.

  25. big o says:

    in light of ankiel’s 2 hits last night , (one against matusz) ,
    jimmy “the dead” greek has put ankiel’s RBI total over/under @ 5
    for the remaining 3 games of the baltimore series .

    over/under on the number of percs it takes to revive the dead greek ?
    two .

  26. barker says:

    20 team league trade of domonic brown went through

    brown for nolasco

    win or no —- cant believe he took it

    RF situation pence huff quentin snider for rf or lf or util
    SPs Price lester kershaw shields wade davis volquez arroyo nolasco dl harden

  27. Steve says:

    @Grey: Sorry, that was pretty cheap. Almost as cheap as Al’s valuation of Cano in all those trade offers…

  28. @Grey: With Guzman to Rangers, do you like any of Guzman or Desmond as a Kinslereplacement, over Felipe Lopez, non-star of 2009?

  29. royce! says:

    Rumor has it Maholm is heading to the Padres, which I guess is interesting for… I’m not sure who that is interesting for.

    Well, I guess my question is does Maholm become a hodgepadre, that is, would he be rosterable in a 12 team league? If they make the trade, he could conceivably start against PIT at home as early as next week.

  30. Grey

    Grey says:

    @royce!: Everyone can be a hodgepadre. They just need the opportunity. Well, almost anyone. Maholm would though, yes.

  31. barker says:

    not a keeper and what happens when victorino comes back they kick old man ibanez to the curb — think its possible he gets sent back down or plays the ben francisco role??

    also did i really need him honestly ??

    you’re makin me think what i did over here a la joe pesci in goodfellas

  32. Grey

    Grey says:

    @barker: I didn’t realize it’s not a keeper. Then you did good getting Nolasco.

  33. barker says:

    so zobrist is not starting tonight says you??

  34. Grey

    Grey says:

    @barker: That’s what it seems like.

  35. royce! says:

    This is not to prove a point or anything, I just found it interesting.

    Clearly Petco is a pitcher’s park. Its most significant aspect is its enormity, which results in less HR (ESPN park factor multiplier of .799, 23rd in the league). It’s actually in the middle of the pack for runs and hits (18 and 20, respectively), and a good place to hit triples (5th).

    This made me think that difference between the Padres home and away team ERA would be huge. However, it is not that high (.83). As points of comparison, STL’s team ERA is 1.40 greater away, NYM 1.70 more away, SEA 1.80 more away…and I don’t want to do anymore math.

    As I’ve probably mentioned many times while commenting, I don’t have a great grasp on probability theory, so I don’t know how much of this is attributable to random chance (meaning, as I understand it, that the sample size is too small for the numbers to have normalized). But as a Padres fan, I prefer to view these stats as evidence that, as well as Petco being cavernous, Padres pitching is allowing very few runs because, well, they might actually be good pitchers, and the management may have succeeded in putting together a good defensive team.

  36. Steve says:

    Anyone know if Snider is back tonight?

  37. Grey

    Grey says:

    @royce!: Padres pitching has been great, no doubt. Their bullpen is good enough to carry them in the playoffs if they get there. But I think you can just look at Petco and say, “You know what? This is ginormous.”

  38. royce! says:

    Last year the Padres team ERA was 1.94 more away, 1.58 more in 2008, 1.40 more in 2007…so it seems that previously, the Padres team ERA was lowered at home because of the stadium, and this year along with the stadium there may be good pitching and offense. (This seems to be borne out by the fact that the Padres have the best home ERA they’ve had for at least a decade (I didn’t look past 2000, but doubt they’ve ever had a lower home ERA)).

  39. peter says:

    @Steve: He’s been called up, but according to Rotoworld he’s not playing. Via rotoworld:

    Blue Jays recalled outfielder Travis Snider from Double-A New Hampshire.
    The Jays still haven’t cleared any room for Snider, so he’s on the bench tonight. He hit .296/.306/.543 with a 21/2 K/BB ratio in 81 at-bats during his stay with the Fisher Cats. He’ll have limited value in AL-only leagues unless the team sheds a bat.

  40. charlie batch says:

    who do you like more ROS, jose lopez or chone figgy

  41. Steve says:

    @peter: Thanks!

  42. royce! says:

    @Grey: It’s crazy how a few feet in the gaps (right center and left center) can make such a huge difference, because Petco is not that huge at center and the corners. Actually, I just double checked it, it’s a few feet bigger at the corners, and a little shorter than normal at center.

    But I totally know what you mean. It really seems, as you say, “ginormous.”

    When it comes down to it, I am just looking for reasons to believe that the Padres will continue to play well and make it to the playoffs. It would be nice to have the national media mention them a little more often. Not that I want to become America’s team or something (and, in fact, after attending Wednesday’s game against the Dodgers, I’m thinking about taking back my complaints about people not showing up to the games. I was getting used to having an entire row to myself.)

  43. peter says:

    @Steve: No problem. For me, it solves my problem of whether to play him over Domonic. But I won’t be happy if they don’t clear room for him, soon. They wouldn’t call him up if he wasn’t going to play everyday, right? Then again, this is the team that just traded for Mike Jacobs.

  44. Dumbmutt says:

    Hopefully the Yanks do get Berkman since it would be fun to watch him for the rest of the year.

  45. Grey

    Grey says:

    @royce!: Yeah, could be a few feet, but I remember sitting in Petco for the first time and thinking I can’t’s believe anyone hits a homer here. I say, “cant’s” when I’m San Diego. Not sure the media attention will ever be lavished on them because of how they’re built. You just don’t hear much about bullpens.

  46. @Grey: For real right? Hey who do you like tomorrow out of these bums? My ERA & WHIP are bloated like Mo Vaughn at Sizzler, so I’m just looking for W, QS, K:

    Takahashi vs ‘Zona
    Blanton @ D.C.
    Bush @ Houston
    Ely @ S.F.

    I’d be dropping Kennedy for one of these bums.

    Hey good news Bay owners – he’s getting sent to the DL.

  47. Spartacus says:

    Start Baker at home versus SEA or Dempster on the road at COL.

  48. Grey

    Grey says:

    @3FingersBrown: I just grabbed Blanton in a H2H so come along for the ride.

  49. Goose says:

    i’m holding Volquez for one more start. it’s Sun vs ATL. but i’m overly devoted since i traded for him at the break thinking he’d be money. turn on the lights, Edinson!

    also, to wit:

    1) .328/.385/.587-72-20-70-2

    2) .276/.376/.492-71-22-67-7

    3) .280/.360/.507-70-22-64-2

    those are the lines for Cano, Weeks and Uggla — the top 3 at 2B this year. Ugg’s avg may drop off, but our league is OBP, so Ugg is even better on our board — and his counting stats are top-tier. so what kind of guy would you want to get back that would make selling him worth it? i agree dealing at peak-value is smart — just wondering what to shoot for. i got shot down aiming for Votto (package was Uggla/Rasmus/Gordon for Votto/Jaime Garcia — dang). talking roto keeper league.

  50. Eddy says:

    Andres Torres vs Carlos Monasterios or Stammen vs Phillies

  51. Eddy says:

    @Eddy: Meant to be Dominic brown vs Nats with stammen pitching

  52. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Goose: That trade was a valiant effort for Votto. Depends on needs on what you should get for him. I’d want no lower than a 2nd tier corner man or #2 OF or #2 SP.

    @Eddy: I don’t understand the question.

  53. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Eddy: Oh… Brown…

  54. royce! says:

    @Grey: Very true about national interest in the bullpen.

    Another Petco tidbit- Adrian Gonzalez has hit the most HR in a season at Petco (14). I was checking out the records for other ballparks, and 14 is the lowest, not including Metco (7- Francouer and Murphy in 2009, and Ike Davis in 2010), and Target Field (6- Kubel/Thome, 2010).

  55. Goose says:

    @Grey: word, thanks. i think Ryan Zimm may be in my crosshairs.

  56. Grey

    Grey says:

    @3FingersBrown: Oh, it’s so on.

    @royce!: That’s pretty incredible, especially since Petco has obviously been around longer.

    @Goose: That would be nice.

  57. royce! says:

    Cueto v. ATL or Marcum v. CLE?

  58. brad says:

    Berkman to Yanks appears to be done.

  59. barker says:

    start 2 of:
    quentin vs b anderson or brown vs stammen or pence vs lilly

    and in a 10 team h2h keep bay or manny for my dl slot have delmon in LF currently or keep both on dl and activate ellsbury from DL

  60. royce! says:

    Does anyone have info on who HOU is getting for Berkman?

  61. Grey

    Grey says:

    @royce!: Both? Marcum…

    @brad: For who?

    @barker: Quentin, Brown… Keep Manny…

  62. royce! says:

    If I have Tulowitzki (SS) and Rollins (2B/SS) in a 10 team roto, can I afford to drop MMD? I am at 10 for HR, 8 for RBI, and 9 for R, but at 3 for SB and 5 for AVG.

  63. barker says:

    does this mean pick up wallace in 14 team leagues and up
    drop snider fowler ogando volquez wade davis for big brett in a 20 teamer or not

  64. royce! says:

    Oh, for 3B I have A Rod and for 1B/3B I have LaRoche.

  65. royce! says:

    @Grey: Cool, sorry about all the Qs, but not that he’s a Yankee, do you like Berkman over LaRoche?

    And would you rather have Jair or Cueto?

  66. royce! says:

    EDIT- “now”, not “not”

  67. brad says:

    @Grey: @royce!: seems like we won’t know for a little while. i guess the 10-5 rights include a 24 hour waiting period or something. . .

  68. Aharon says:

    Hey, all! Last minute freakout. Which 3 of Krispie (/Pelfrey); Choo (/Marcum); Brown (/Stammen), Torres (/Monasterios) and Dunn (/Oswalt) would you start?

  69. Grey

    Grey says:

    @royce!: Yup re: Berkman… Cueto…

  70. alvaro says:

    I just got offered Prado and Hanson for Kemp and whichever player I drop

    I dont know about the trade but Im in 6th on a 12 team weekly points league and feel like I have to make some sort of move to at least get into the money

    My team is

    Olivo Dunn Figgins N.Walker Rollins Kemp Pence Markakis Konerko BN Span B. Roberts Rolen

    We start 5 Pitchers I have Lincecum Lilly Bills E Santana Vazquez Strasburg Wandy Volquez Storen

  71. brad says:

    also Berkman apparently wants to be back in Houston next year. wanted assurances that Yankees would NOT pick up team option.

  72. Grey

    Grey says:

    @alvaro: I’d want Kemp.

  73. Grey

    Grey says:

    @brad: Aw, that’s sweet. But who did Houston get?

  74. brad says:

    interesting demand considering he’s unlikely (in my opinion) to get 15mil out of the ‘stros at this point.

  75. royce! says:

    @brad: Wow, that really gives new meaning to the term, “rental.” I wonder how often it’s happened that a player has been traded, and then returned the next year to the team that traded them.

    And I wonder, as a legal issue, if the Yankees could acquire Berkman but the Astros could retain the team option. That is, could the contract be severed in such a way?

    Anyhow, weird.

  76. brad says:

    @Grey: my guess: scrub minor-leaguers and $.

  77. royce! says:

    Maybe the Yankees are keeping the details of the trade under wraps until its confirmed. They were pretty pissed about SEA backing out of the Cliff Lee deal, because they viewed it as SEA using the fact that NY was willing include Montero in a trade to raise their negotiating position.

  78. Grey

    Grey says:

    @royce!: Yeah, that could be, but I always viewed as the Yankees were just upping others’ prices on the Lee trade.

  79. herschel says:

    @Grey: ubaldo/pena for howard?

  80. big o says:

    you’re going to have to search this out , ‘cuz i’m relying on memory , here :

    but , in 1976 (i think) the boston red sawx traded bernie carbo to the milwaukee brewers for a “player to be named later” .

    it was after the play-offs that year (i think) that milwaukee’s player to be named later turned out to be ==> bernie carbo .

  81. Grey

    Grey says:

    @herschel: It’s fair, I’d take Howard.

  82. royce! says:

    @big o: That’s hilarious! I’m trying to find out if it’s true. So far all I’ve discovered is that Carbo tried to pay some goons to break Keith Hernandez’s arms. And that Carbo was high during the 1975 Series. The 70s were crazy!!!

  83. big o says:

    it’s the answer to a pretty well-known / obscure question , here in new england .
    usually worth a free beer or 2 , as far as bar bets go .

  84. Would you start Tabata against Carpenter or Alex Gordon against Arrieta? I’m leaning towards Gordon.

  85. Grey

    Grey says:

    @royce!: Ha… Then he went on to be a hairdresser. Why hasn’t anyone made the Bernie Carbo movie?

    @Frank Kim: Tabata

  86. @Grey: Wow, thanks for the quick answer! I guess you’re going w/ Tabata because Gordon hasn’t done anything yet? Okay I’ll try Tabata though Carpenter scares me. :-)

  87. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Frank Kim: Tabata’s hit well recently and Gordon’s been pretty bleh so far.

  88. @Grey: Yeah totally see that. I am kind of hoping Gordon will start thumping because Sandoval has been pretty bleh too. :-)

    Thanks again!

  89. big o says:

    oswalt having a rough debut ?

  90. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    Who wins?

    The yawnstipation that is The Real World: New Orleans (Part Deux)

    The yawnstipation that is waiting for A-Rod to hit #600

  91. Bodymore says:

    Hey Grey, curious about your opinion on this — my ratios are shot for the week but I am killin K’s, I need to ensure a win in QS and wins though. I picked up Volstad @ SD today but figure I might as well add another start or two tomorrow since there are some intriguing options.

    Gorze @ Col — I like the pitcher but coors etc.
    Enright @ NYM (like the stadium more than the pitcher)
    Slowey vs Sea (like the opposing team, Slowey has burned me plenty this year though)
    Blanton @ Was (looks like he’s done well over the last couple of weeks and has a decent chance for a win b/c of the teams?)

    Who would you take? I have 2 moves left for the week so I’ll probably grab one of them and Wuertz…

  92. fitz says:

    Youk is the goddamn man at taking out pitchers. Galaraga just got smoked in the ankle.

  93. Tom Emanski says:

    I hate Boesch with a passion. Tell me who to replace him with from: Alvarez, Tabata, Hardy, Denorfia, Johnson, Fowler

  94. royce! says:

    @Grey: I’d definitely pay $10 to see a movie based on the life of Bernie Carbo. Much more promising than the Moneyball movie.

  95. royce! says:

    According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (via Twitter), the Yankees will send pitcher Mark Melancon and second baseman Jimmy Paredes to Houston.

  96. royce! says:

    I think Houston must have decided that speed was all the rage so they should get as many fast guys as possible- the three batters from the Oswalt and Berkman trades have combined for 108 steals in 2010 (Paredes (34), Gose (36), and Villar (38)). Of course, they already moved Gose, but it still seems that they’re valuing speed pretty highly.

  97. Anonymous says:

    Which is more likely to be dealt now? Aardsma, Dotel, Nunez or Gregg?

    Trying to figure out what to do if Dotel gets dealt. I’ve got Hensley betting on Nunez being traded. I missed out on Hanrahan after somewhat of a rookie move on my part. It’s a dynasty, so Storen and Meek both have their rights owned already. Is League or Nunez a better footcuff (err, banking on a player from a different team taking over as closer…not quite a handcuff per se and I’m not creative)

    Also, when does Mike G get his job back?

  98. Steve says:

    @Grey: Wright!
    Member I traded Wilson + Price for him in my H2H league? One guy was so annoyed about it, he quit the league.
    Yup, I’m playing him this week…

  99. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Awesomus Maximus: See, I’m kinda enjoying this new Real World. It’s not the best season ever, don’t get me wrong. But the hair dresser is such a douche that it’s train wreck TV for me.

    @Bodymore: Slowey…

    @fitz: Ha

    @Tom Emanski: Tabata for steals, Alvarez for power.

    @royce!: I see Will Ferrell in it, wht do you think?

    @royce!: Thanks for the heads up!

    @royce!: I think they’re valuing cheap and young.

    @Anonymous: Mike G. should be the closer within the week. None may get dealt, but Dotel would be my guess. I don’t see too many teams trading for a closer, was actually surprised by Capps. I’d think Nunez is better going forward than League.

    @Grey: If you’re going the comedy route, Ferrell would be great. But there’s some darkness to the Carbo story, and in the 70s at least Carbo looks sorta like Casey Affleck, so I would cast him if the script was more depressing. Ferrell’s “depressing” is too funny.

    The story could really go either way. I mean, the start of the movie could be a narrator reading this awesome quote, and I would probably only be able to tell if it was going to be a comedy or a tragedy based on the background music:

    “Bernie Carbo launched the greatest pinch-hit home run in Red Sox history. He admitted he was high on drugs during the 1975 World Series.

    ‘I probably smoked two joints, drank about three or four beers, got to the ballpark, took some [amphetamines], took a pain pill, drank a cup of coffee, chewed some tobacco, had a cigarette, and got up to the plate and hit,’ Carbo said.”

    NJ man gets jail for Phillies game vomit-assault

    PHILADELPHIA (AP)—A 21-year-old man who intentionally vomited on a spectator and his 11-year-old daughter at a Philadelphia Phillies game was sentenced Friday to up to three months in jail and community service, which the judge suggested be fulfilled by cleaning ballpark toilets and trash.

    Clemmens and his friend were cursing and heckling the Vangelo family from the first inning. Vangelo’s 15-year-old daughter asked them to stop the profanity around her younger sister, prompting more heckling and cursing. The family was doused with beer when they rose to cheer a Phillies home run, and Vangelo eventually complained to security that Clemmens’ friend was spitting, which hit his younger daughter’s jacket and seat.

    After the friend was ejected, Clemmens was sitting alone when he answered his cell phone and said: “I need to do what I need to do. I’m going to get sick,” prosecutors said.

    He then put his fingers down his throat and “projectile vomited,” Vangelo said. He also punched Vangelo several times, causing his ear to bleed, before being tackled by other spectators and arrested

  113. royce! says:

    @Grey: Overall, I think that the article was very focused on the harm that drugs can do, D.A.R.E., etc., but I found his story about the pinch hit HR pretty funny.

    Also funny– “Carbo went to cosmetology school and opened a hairdressing salon.”

    But I did just notice that the article is apparently in a section called “One Hit Wonders.” That something like Behind the Music? “Carbo’s career started out on a wing and a prayer. But now the wing was on fire, and the prayer had been answered by Satan.”

  148. Eddy says:

    Is it blasphemy if I’m thinking of trading away Kinsler for a top SP and a catcher to boot when I have Beckham? Kinsler’s constant injuries aren’t comforting and I feel he’s going to go on the DL again soon. Apparently this had been something bothering him since before the ASB.

  149. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Grey: Yeah, he is a gigantic douche… I do enjoy watching him swipe his hair whenever he gets upset (which is about every five minutes) as if it were some sort of security blanket. It’s almost too much, though… like he’s a “plant” and was told/asked/goaded/pressured by the producers to be as confrontational as possible.

    Everyone else is pretty boring… “I black out when I drink. That’s weird?”… “We must rescue the girl who blacks out when she drinks or else she’ll do something crazy like… go to another bar for a few minutes and then take a cab home!”. I find myself rolling my eyes more than laughing at the angst driven hilarity of past seasons. And seriously, the fact that the gay cast member named Preston has not received the nickname “Preston Fudge” by this point speaks volumes about the lack of creativity amongst today’s youth.

  150. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Eddy: Just going by memory here, but didn’t Kinsler say well before coming off the DL that he wasn’t going to be 100%? Taking that into account, I’ve been content with the production from him… and I kinda’ sorta’ believe that this is more precautionary than serious. I’m more worried about him losing playing time at the end of the regular season (fantasy playoffs) for more precaution when I’ll really need some production.

  154. Eddy says:

    @Awesomus Maximus:
    Well I was definitely content with his recent streak that raised his average near .300, as well as his runs which were off the charts in the short amount of time he’s played, but what else is there to him? He has 6 HR (and I did at least expect more production there, healed ankle or not) and 10 SB. Scott Podsednik looks at that and shrugs. This is a team with J-Up, Reyes, Wright, Miggy, CarGo, Holliday, Choo, and Torres, so it isn’t like Kinsler is “the guy” for me ykno? I guess it’s that seeing Beckham’s 2 RBI today (and above average week overall) made me realize I can upgrade somewhere else and the dropoff won’t be THAT bad.

    I have a core four of Lester, Kershaw, Weaver, and Gallardo. Then Wandy, Wells, and DLR.

    I feel like I can flip Kinsler 1 for 1 for Halladay (dude has Adam Rosales as his 2B, but is out of the race already so I don’t know how keen he is with trading) or 2 for 2 for a tandem of Montero and CC or C.Santana and Wainwright while I throw in one of my last 3 SP.

    Thoughts on that jumbled mess I threw at you?

  155. Eddy says:

    @Eddy: @Awesomus Maximus:

    Forgot to mention I had Wieters as my catcher. I know I know, the Ron Popeil method, but the guy ahsn’t done shizz for me this entire season. He had one great week and THAT’S IT. And to spite me for benching him for his 2 homer day Monday, he’s hit below .100 since. I’m satisified with minimal production from that spot, but cmon, .100 with 2 BB? That’s just unfair.

  156. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Eddy: You can trade Kinsler straight up for Halladay? As in Roy Halladay? The starting pitcher? For the Phillies? Just want to make sure I didn’t misread it… ’cause that would be a no brainer.

  157. Eddy says:

    @Awesomus Maximus:
    Well it’s a thought. That manager is stingy, so I’ll be honest, nothing will probably come to fruition considering he’s out of the race and trades are meaningless to him. But it’s worth a shot if he’s carrying Adam Rosales there!

  158. big o says:

    maybe kinsler and a $20 bill might get you halladay .

  159. Stare says:

    Drop Alfredo Simon for Brandon League or Sean Burnett?

  160. @Grey: I had Kennedy & Dempster tonight, so my opponent’s lead in ratios is too much for me to make up. All I want’s a W and/or QS from Blanton. At least I know he makes a fine bourbon.

    Yeah that Ramos for Capps move doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to the Twins… I’m down 4 saves to 2. Going to wait out the weekend to see if Capps implodes. If not, I’ll dump Rausch for Clippard for Monday if he’s still available.

    Is it me or does Carbo look like Tom Sizemore?

    The philly fan projectile vomit story was just too gross even for me to look up on youtube. Stay classy Philly.

  161. @Grey: Drop FeLo (or Panda?!) for Chris Johnson or Uribe? I’m leaning towards making a move for Johnson. He’s been big for me in my 15 team league since I picked him up two weeks ago.

  162. madballs says:

    Grey, from here on out, who would you rather go with at closer, Marmol or Street? kthx

  164. Joe B says:

    Should I drop C Perez for M Gonzalez… I’m chasing saves. Hold on to Perez to see if Wood gets traded (hopefully not to the Sawx)?

  165. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Eddy: By “no brainer” I meant that the other manager would have to have no brain to accept that offer. Kidding, but seriously, I had a guy in my league carrying David Nick at 2B (don’t worry, I don’t think anyone at the Diamondbacks knows him, either… and he was supposedly in their spring training camp) after the draft and he literally laughed at me when I offered him Brandon Phillips for Felix Hernandez. I expect you’ll get a similar response.

  166. royce! says:

    Chris Snyder, a minor leaguer, and cash to the Pirates for Carrasco, Church, and Crosby. And Qualls is headed to TB. Any chance the Diamondbacks just picked up their closer?

    I found this from a couple days ago–sorry, buddy, your desires clearly aren’t playing a part in this transaction:

    According to Dejan Kovacevic of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, D.J. Carrasco met with Pirates general manager Neal Huntington last week to express his willingness in being traded to a contender.

    “It’s just something that I’m open to, playing for a contender,” Carrasco said Wednesday. According to Kovacevic, Carrasco neither demanded a trade in the meeting nor said he would prefer one. The 33-year-old right-hander has a 3.88 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 45 appearances with the Pirates this season. Just a little under two weeks ago, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that “at least five teams” had contacted the Bucs about the availability of Carrasco.

  167. @royce!: Interesting. I’ll have to keep an eye on Carrasco. I really can’t see Heilman getting the call in the 9th going forward. I think they just brought him out last night to torture Met fans.

    With a useless Rausch now taking up space on my roster, I’m waiting until the deadline’s up to see how things pan out, before I make a move.

    Have to say the Twins getting Capps really blindsided me. Of my 3 closers, I was expecting Gregg to lose his job via trade.

  168. SinBad says:

    Would you do Lincecum for Kemp?

  169. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Terrence Mann: Yeah, not surprising.

    @Eddy: I’m confused, he’s on the DL now.

    @Awesomus Maximus: Ha! Yeah, agreed they’re not the most creative bunch. But they rarely get people who are intentionally funny. (If ever, trying to remember here.) He lays on his bed and blow drys his legs. C’mon…

    @big o: Guess it was his throwing day. Weird move, for sure.

    @Stare: Heilman?

    @3FingersBrown: The guy who was arrested for the vomit story looks like a young John Kruk.

    @3FingersBrown: Lopez for Johnson.

    @madballs: Marmol

    @Joe B: I’d hold Perez for right now.

    @royce!: That DJ is almost as crazy as the last one you posted about.

    Starting Maximus at the Sawx today? My opponent has Haren, Wandy, F-her going today and Wainwright tomorrow. I still have JJ, Kershaw, Floyd, Hamels, and Verlander going tomorrow. I’m up a win, down a loss, up a save, getting murdered in walks, up 37 in Ks, up 1.16 in ERA, up 0.16 in WHIP, up 1.26 in Ks/9.

    I need to keep the beatdown train rolling (currently up 11-4 this week) because I’m in 3rd and this guy’s in 1st. Thanks dood…

  174. GopherDay says:

    @GopherDay: Deal official now, Ludwick to SD, Westbrook to the Cards, and Prospects to the Indians.

  175. Eddy says:

    I know he’s on the DL, but I just don’t think he’ll be amazing when he comes back. You don’t think Beckham will keep on producing? In all honesty I think he may, and hopefully gets moved out of the 9th spot. If Beckham can keep on going like this, is the fall from Kinsler to him that bad that trading Kinsler and DLR for Halladay is a bad move when Beckham can back me up?

  176. royce! says:

    My Ludwick for Billingsley deal in the RCL just got a little less fair…Well done, Padres!

    Anyone read any rumors about aardsma getting dealt today?

  179. yankees2010 says:

    Hey Grey et al,
    I too was blindsided by the Capps deal. Although we do have Holds in our League, it sounds like Gardenhire will use his entire bullpen as a set up for Capps. My bullpen is now a bit of a mess with Wilson (fine), Rauch and Dotel. I grabbed Breslow but maybe should have grabbed Wuertz. What a disaster for my first place team.

    Any word on a trade with Dotel and would Meek be worth a grab? Also, any word on Hellickson being promoted?

    Thanks Grey and keep up the great work.

  180. @Grey: Kruk had a few too many Yuenlings… Grabbing a streamer for tomorrow:

    R. Lopez @ Mets (eeech)
    Chen vs. Balt
    Duke @Stl (hasn’t been bad historically against the redbirds and they haven’t been hitting all that much lately)
    Litsch vs. Cle

    Down 5-2 in Wins, 3-2 QS and up 10 K. I’m thinking Duke or Chen.

    With Westbrook getting moved to Stl and scheduled to start today, I wonder when his next start is. I don’t think they’d push Waino back tomorrow. Maybe Monday, which would give Garcia an extra day of rest?

  181. anon says:

    So far, Gutierez is the only person with a new closer job from today, is that correct? He sucks and has burnt me off and on all season, but I just added him in 4 leagues anyways. Hoping something better comes along today!!

  182. yankees2010 says:

    One more thing Grey. We just had a major trade in our league:

    Braun, Kershaw and Posey for Pujols, Abreu and Shields.

    The guy getting Pujols is in second place behind me and the guy getting Braun is in 10th. I would appreciate your assessment as well as any others who wish to chime in.

    Thanks Grey.

  183. Grey

    Grey says:

    @tHe sHiT: I’d bench Garza and start Bills.

    @Wilsonian: I’d sit him.

    @GopherDay: Thanks for the heads up!

    @Eddy: Kinsler won’t be back until the end of August. Trade him away if you can. Not sure why anyone would trade for him though.

    @royce!: Ha

    @Howard: He’s not going to get any saves.

    @yankees2010: Doesn’t sound like Dotel’s going anywhere, but guess it could happen. Hanrahan is the pick up if it happens. And Wuertz.

    @3FingersBrown: Go with Duke… Not sure on Garcia.

    @anon: Heilman got the save last night.

    @yankees2010: I’d take the Braun side.

  184. @Grey: I’m actually going to grab both Duke and Chen, dropping Blanton & Rausch. My opponent just picked up Millwood & Wolf, so I want to overwhelm him with mediocrity. It’ll give me 7 starts left this weekend to his 5.

    I have a feeling that Westbrook’s going to start Monday or Tuesday. I’ll probably give him a go for two next week…

  191. Grey

    Grey says:

    @vinko: I wouldn’t start him in Coors. I don’t know your options for Ludwick.

  192. royce! says:

    @Grey: @Wilsonian: Well, Harold Reynolds begs to differ. He apparently doesn’t see how this trade makes the Dodgers a better team.

    So that pretty much confirms that the Dodgers robbed the Cubs.

  193. peter says:

    @Wilsonian: The Cubbies should have held out for Ronnie Belliard.

    @Grey: Snider or Wallace? I would have said Snider, but he’s now on the bench 2 days in row. Before he even takes the field, Wallace appears to have the clearer path to playing time (!).

  194. elwood blues says:

    Dewitt?? Do the Cubs even have a plan? I hope Wallach is good some day.
    @Grey – what do you think of Chris Denorfia now. With Victorino on DL I need to pick up an OF in NL Only League.
    I’m looking at either Deno or Jay.

  195. @Grey: I can’t believe I’m stooping so low. Desperate times… O’s blow and I remembered what you were saying about how they’re even worse against lefties.

  196. Principal Blackman says:

    I’m still reeling a bit from the loss of Morneau at 1B in one of my leagues. I’ve been using Napoli at first and I picked Jorge Posada from the FA pool to fill the C spot. A potential trade partner wants a SS or a 3B for one of either Adrian Gonzalez or Prince Fielder. I have Tulowitzki at short but I don’t have a ready backup. I also have Longoria at third and Zimmerman in my CI spot, with Ian Stewart as backup.
    I have two questions. Would you rather have AGon or Fielder? And should I offer him Tulo or Zimmerman?

    Possible FA SS replacements include Uribe, Yunel, Scutaro ,Stephen Drew Dessmond. Stewart would obvs slide into the CI spot.

  197. Wilsonian says:

    Get ready to pick up Chris Perez…rumor is Woodrow to the Yankees…

  198. Wilsonian says:

    @peter: yeah, I know Theriot isn’t the shit or anything, but I enjoyed at least watching him play. It was kind of nice to see someone hustle from time to time. Oh, and I heard they didn’t want to pick up Belliard because of the impact it would have on the clubhouse meals…

  199. GopherDay says:

    @Wilsonian: Perez is long gone is all of my leagues…To me that is. Hehe

  200. Wilsonian says:

    Today – start one: Pence at home v. Mil and Dave Bush or Kemp on the road v. SF and Zito?

  201. Wilsonian says:

    @GopherDay: he’s long gone in most leagues, mine included, but ya never know…

    I actually had him a couple weeks ago and dealt him along with Bald Jim for Hamels and Soria.

  202. peter says:

    @Wilsonian: Nice. Belliard’s belly’s collateral costs.

  203. peter says:

    @Wilsonian: Joel Sherman (NY Post) is reporting the deal is done (pending commisioner’s approval). Not sure what/if anything Yanks sent to Cleveland besides cash.

  204. Wilsonian says:

    @peter: Perez is in for the save right now, as well.

  205. peter says:

    Brett Cecil’s BB gun beat my WHIP.

  206. peter says:

    @Wilsonian: From the line in the box score, I think the Indians sent Wood to the mound, one last time, wearing Perez’s uniform.

  207. Wilsonian says:

    Here’s another one for ya…snag Hanrahananananananan…Dotel to the Dodgers.

    Hanrahananananananan or Storen?

  208. rey mysterio jr says:

    Or meek?

  209. tall chicks says:

    I’d say Hanrahan over Storen because it seems more likely Clippard could get saves over Storen than Meek could over Hanrahan. That’s only if Riggleman and/or Russell think like I do, though.

  210. peter says:

    @Wilsonian: I just grabbed Hanrahan wherever possible. Thanks…

  211. peter says:

    @rey mysterio jr: @tall chicks: The last several time’s the Bucs have had the lead in a close game, Meek’s been pitching the 7th, Hanrahan the 8th.

  212. Wilsonian says:

    @peter: no problem. Just doing my civic duty to my fellow Razzball community members…

  213. tall chicks says:

    @tall chicks: Plus, Burnett could get some save chances in Washington, too.

  214. Bob says:

    Beckham or Figgins?

  215. Wilsonian says:

    Ok, pick 2: Hanrahan, Mike G., Storen.

  216. ASAOK says:

    Berkman in lineup batting 2nd for Yanks…that should be good for his value

  217. @Grey: This wasnt a good day to sleep all morning I see…I was correct in snapping up Meek on Thursday tho…drop Dotel in all formats correct?

  218. Steve says:

    Curse those stupid time zones!
    At least I have Dotel in a holds league, but otherwise I’m left holding useless Wood…

  219. Oh its Hanrahan and I was scooped, ah well. I should be ok with 3 closers.

  220. Tho ESPN is reporting its gonna be another closer by committee thing. In a 7×7 format, Im better off with the guy with the better ratios in that case so perhaps Meek is the better guy anyways.

  221. @Steve:

    I guess even a short reliver gets some holds but wouldnt you be better off dropping Dotel for Kuo (setup man)?

  222. Steve says:

    @Elijah: Already owned in that league.
    What’s the deal with Gutierrez in Arizona? Thought he was the closer there.

  223. @Steve:

    He sucks is what happened. Heilman looks like the winner by default: every other guy has been horrible while he’s merely been lackluster.

  224. Wilsonian says:

    I didn’t notice this, but Hanrahan has a sick K-rate. He’s racked up 63 and is at 12.42 Ks/9. Not shabby…

  225. Anonymous says:

    Drop dotel for mike g now that Dotel is done?

  226. Bob says:

    I have two spots for the following three players – Mike Gonzalez, Storen, and Hanrahan. Who gets the most saves the rest of the year?

  227. tall chicks says:

    @Wilsonian: 5th best K rate in the league.

  228. mr baseball says:

    Pirates manager John Russell wouldn’t say Saturday who will close in Pittsburgh now that Octavio Dotel is traded.

    It’s between Evan Meek and Joel Hanrahan

  229. mr baseball says:

    I see Kerry Woods moved to the Bombers

  230. mr baseball says:

    Red Sox acquired catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia – ANY HOPE IN KEEPER LEAUGE – if there is he will be gone within hours

  231. Eddy says:

    Kinsler for Verlander? Who gets shafted?

  232. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Eddy: Verlander

  233. Eddy says:

    My second question threw me off. You prefer Verlander correct?

  234. Wilsonian says:

    Krispie or Pence tonight? Krispie’s in Metco v. Takahashi and Pence is at home v. Bush.

  235. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Eddy: Yeah, I don’t want Kinsler who’s going to be on the DL for a month.

    @Wilsonian: Krispie

  236. Steve says:

    What’s up with Wilson?

    Too embarrassed to show his face after that episode with the orange cleats?

  237. Steve says:

    Oh and MMD is out of the lineup tonight.

    Which is today for me.

  238. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Steve: Thanks for the heads up, too bad since he just had a nice game, be nice if they let him get in a groove.

  239. Steve says:

    @Grey: Fielder and Braun have swapped spots in the lineup….

  240. peter says:

    @Steve: Couldn’t hurt – Braun has been hitting .196 in the last month. And who is MMD? I’ve clearly not been paying enough attention. Sorry.

  241. Steve says:

    @peter: MMD = Mini Mini Donkey = Ian Stewart.

  242. peter says:

    @Steve: Oh, of course. Thanks. And thank you, Jim Tracy, for benching my CI to give some much deserved playing time to Melvin Mora.

  243. sal says:

    @Grey: whats westbrooks status after the move to the cards and dunk? Im going to drop dotel for him…

  244. sal says:

    but that question is like asking what color boxers should I wear tonight…

  245. peter says:

    @sal: He’ll probably benefit from moving to the NL central, better defense, more run support, etc. He’s probably a match-ups guy.

  246. Grey

    Grey says:

    @sal: I wouldn’t touch Westbrook.

  247. aj says:

    I have Wieters. 5×5 roto 13 teams. non keeper. Should i cut bait for:
    Y. Molina, Montero, Doumit, Snyder

  248. aj says:

    alvarez or kouz for the rest of the season?

  249. motorcitykitty says:

    Grey, I have Latos AND Strasburg in a 16 team h2h, so pitching is scarce as you can imagine. Does their recent stints on the DL clear them of their innings ceilings? It looks like I’m going to make the playoffs but I dont want to be screwed out of 2/7ths of my pitching because of this situation. Tried to deal them for another ace but no takers. What do ya think?

  250. BigFatHippo says:

    @Grey: Yes, I said Luddy would sign a 32 mil contract, I just didn’t say who it was with. He’ll set Petco on fire………………and I stand by my prognostadrunkation………. *

    *Hint, drank beer with his agent. Shhhhhhh

  251. Grey

    Grey says:

    @aj: Nope

    @aj: Alvarez

    @motorcitykitty: Nats aren’t going to play games with Strasburg. They may still shut him down. Latos is going to pitch until the Padres clinch, then he may get shut down until the playoffs.

    @BigFatHippo: That’s right, I forgot about your prediction. Hehe…

  252. motorcitykitty says:

    Alright then, what would you think about this: Strasburg, Latos for Beckett, Liriano in a h2h league that is weighted more to k’s and less to IP. there may be another piece or two to the deal, but these are the main components. I really hate to get rid of either Latos or Strasburg, they’ve been so

  253. motorcitykitty says:

  254. So far so good for my decision to pick up Wandy.

  255. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Elijah: Loving my decision to pickup Clippard.

  256. I liked that my opponent has Clippard personally.

  257. Steve says:

    @Grey: Bit of a bittersweet home run there, eh?
    You run Greinke and Arroyo out there today?

  258. manfromearth says:

    Hi Grey. Who do you like more going forward knowing I need steals without sacrificing too much at batting average- Michael Bourn or Nyjer Morgan? Thanks!

  259. David Wright’s a one man wrecking crew right now.

  260. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Steve: Yeah, I sent them out there. Yeah, Raul hurt me soul.

    @manfromearth: Bourn

  261. tHe sHiT says:

    @Grey: U startin dlR 2moro against the cubbies?

  262. big o says:

    it is with much sadness that i convey the following :

    jimmy “the dead” greek is STILL dead .

    official RBI total for rick ankiel ===> 1 .
    if you took the “under 5” …. you’re a winner !!
    so , too , it appears , is ankiel … who becomes a platoon player with a shot at a ring ….. something he would never get with the royals .
    at least , he left town hitting .500 for the week .

    also , ludwig left st louis , and had no part in the 11 run barrage .

    i’m familiar with the term “ticker tease” ,
    but it seems there should be another term for a ticker tease who has left town .

  263. tHe sHiT says:

    Hellickson 2 start on monday vs Twins. No indication as 2 whether he will join the rotation or if its a spot start.

  264. MeanMachine says:

    What does the save vulture think about Hielman? He’s pitching clean right now. Drop Medlan or Kennedy for him in a H2H points league?

  265. Big Nate says:

    I was just offered these trades in a 12 team 5×5 roto keeper league. If a player is able to be kept, round is in ( ).

    Send Buster Posey (11)
    Send Colby Rasmus (18)
    Send Billy Butler (22)
    Receive Kurt Suzuki (11)
    Receive Adam Dunn (4)
    Receive Prince Fielder
    Receive Felix Hernandez

    Send Billy Butler (22)
    Send Colby Rasmus (18)
    Receive Felix Hernandez
    Receive Ichiro

    Send Billy Butler (22)
    Send Colby Rasmus (18)
    Receive Felix Hernandez
    Receive Adam Dunn

    I was offered Ichiro first but countered with Adam Dunn. Any thoughts on Ichiro for the rest of the year? And on the first trade, I love Posey but acquiring both Fielder and Dunn plus Suzuki as a replacement is tough to turn down.

    Help me Grey!

  266. CarGo hits for the Cycle.

  267. @Elijah:

    Sounds like grounds for a lawsuit by the poor Cyclist.

  268. Grey

    Grey says:

    @tHe sHiT: I would in most leagues.

    @big o: Well, you’ll always have Guthrie. I’m all ears if you have suggestions for a term.

    @tHe sHiT: Thanks for the heads up!

    @MeanMachine: I’d lose Kennedy for him.

    @Big Nate: I wouldn’t go near Ichiro. First deal looks good if you’re going for the win this year.

    @Elijah: Ha!

  269. big o says:

    “bum’s rush” has already been taken .

  270. Eddy says:

    Ugh, does it REALLY have to be the Twins? Haven’t they scored about 83 runs in the past 3 days?

    And man, CarGo has been an absolute monster for me. What a season.

  271. big o says:

    reminded of my favorite movie …..

    So Crates was the epitome of “dead” greeks !

    maybe someone can incorporate a “dust in the wind” connection ?

  272. Grey

    Grey says:

    @big o: Eh

    @Eddy: Seems odd that they’re calling him for only one day too. Unless someone’s getting bumped, which I doubt.

  273. Grey

    Grey says:

    @big o: Bust in the wind <--not good.

  274. tHe sHiT says:

    @Grey: If im just trying to pad my pitching stats, do i start just Liriano vs SEA or dlR vs CHC or both?

  275. CalCheats says:

    Do you like Chris Perez better than Storen and Hanrahan?

  276. CalCheats says:

    Also, if you did a 2nd half rankings now, where approximately would you rank Choo? I’m thinking about dealing for him and was just curious.

  277. CalCheats says:

    One last thing…I think it’s awesome that you take the time to answer every single question posted. Super cool, man.

  278. big o says:

    well , since it’s occasion is , at best , an annual thing ,
    perhaps there’s no need for a razzball term .

    still , i can picture the “trading” team
    singing a take-off of the old roy roger’s tune ….
    “dusty trails to you , until we meet again “

  279. tHe sHiT says:

    @Grey: Thx bro!

  280. Great night at Metco in spite of my having to see my opponent’s combo of Wright, Beltran, Upton and KJo do serious damage. Fortunately nobody else on his team did much. Went to a game with my old man for the first time in about 15 years and we picked a good one.

    Me and the old man got drunk and heckled Heilman mercilessly as he stretched in the bullpen. D-Backs Vasquez got a good chuckle as we egged Heilman on by chanting “Yaddy” over and over. Heilman wasn’t amused. He retreated into the enclosed part of the ‘pen to shield himself from our abuse. Dude’s got no heart. I wouldn’t pick him up with your team.

    I’ve been waiting for Hellickson’s call-up but with circumstances make me leery of picking him up. Sounds like he’ll start Monday, with the rest of the rotation getting pushed back a day. Who knows after that.

    Westbrook’s expected to start Monday against the ‘Stros, which would put him in line to face the Fish on the following Saturday. I’m liking that two-start match up a lot.

    Hanrahan’s available (another owner picked up Meek), I’m going to wait until the 3am turn-over and dump one of my Sunday streamers for some hot SAGNOF action.

  281. airlifting says:

    just wanna point out garrett jones hasn’t had a stolen base since june 20th and is rocking the 1b position with a sub .800 ops. #badbaseballplayer

  282. big o says:

    i don’t know if you’ll get a chance to answer this , before your next installment of “what i saw” , but ,
    re : harden’s 88 pitch outing vs the angels

    tell me , again , about the rabbits , george .

  283. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Grey: What about black David… who left the house after Beth accused him of raping Tami? He was a comedian supposedly. Then again, I can’t remember him being intentionally funny. I think the Irish guy (Dom?) was probably funny, it’s just been so long that I can’t think of any examples.

    For sure, it’s the unintentional funny that keeps us coming back… and that list is hella long. One of my favorite all time RW moments was in Seattle when Lindsay got a phone call from a hometown buddy regarding one of her closest friends, Bill. If I remember correctly, the guy on the other end just said, in a very casual tone, “Hey… Lindsay. Bill killed himself.” Lindsay dropped the phone and left the house in tears… equal parts over the news as well as how it was just tossed at her like an extra concert ticket. But the best part is, after the season ended, MTV put up video clips of “moments” from the season and labeled that one “Best Phone Call”. Wow… talk about insensitive. Surprised she hasn’t been back for any of the “Challenges”…

  284. Chris says:

    Would you sit Hamels (NYM) or J Sanchez (@Col, @ Atl) for Hammel (@ Pit) or Brett Anderson (KC)?

    Just for this week, Aramis or Hart for Util spot?

  285. Wilsonian says:

    Alright, very important question for today. I’m up 13-3 for the week and would love to keep it that way as I’m in 3rd and playing the 1st place guy. He’s got Wain throwing today v. the Buccos, and his closers are Wagner and Bell. I’ve got Kershaw, JJ, Verlander, Floyd and Hamels throwing today against SF, SD, BOS, OAK and WAS, respectively. I also have K-Rod, Capps, Feliz, Soria, and Hanrahan in the ‘pen. If I started all of them, I would have to bench 2 closers and if I start 4 of them, I have to bench one closer.

    Anyway, here’s our pitching stats for the week:

    I’m up 1 win, up 1 loss, up 3 saves, down 10 walks, up 21 ks, up 0.39 in ERA, down 0.02 in WHIP, up 1.4 in Ks/9.

    Basically I would like to keep it that way without changing too much, and if I could, take over the lead in WHIP. So here’s my question: who do I start today and who do I sit? I know I shouldn’t be starting them all because it could totally skew my ratios, even though they are all usually “must starts”. Do I just start JJ? Do I start him and Floyd (and maybe Kershaw) and then bench all my closers? Thanks dood, my first place in the standings depends on you.

  286. Eddy says:

    So last night I greedily grabbed Hellickson in my main league. I’m facing a streamer this next week. Is it worth starting Hellickson? Or do I try and start the week on a plus note with Gallardo and avoid any implosions from Hellickson?

    And like big o, I’d like your thoughts on Harden. He was pitching very well in rehab. Worth a shot or not so much?

  287. Mr2Bits says:

    Grey : So who do you think will have more save opps as Heilman or Breslow as the save vulture in our league added Hanrahan before I could drop Dotel and grab him?

  288. Grey

    Grey says:

    @tHe sHiT: No problem.

    @3FingersBrown: Nice on razzing Heilman. Too bad Qualls wasn’t there, he could use a swift kick to the nuts.

    @big o: Might’ve fixed his mechanics. Was the first promising sign in a while.

    @Awesomus Maximus: The other black guy on this season says he’s a standup. Since I’ve watched every episode and can’t remember his name, I’m guessing he’s not funny either.

    @Chris: Aramis… Start Hamels and Anderson.

    @Wilsonian: Bench all your closers, start Kershaw, JJ and Floyd.

    @Eddy: I wouldn’t start him. Sure re: Harden.

    @Mr2Bits: Heilman…

  289. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Grey: Seriously? I must have missed that nugget… that’s hilarious. Maybe his desperate proximity infatuation with “the girl who sounds like she has mono on top of a broken nose” is an Andy Kaufman type bit… like he’s spoofing the dozens of past RW’ers who’ve fallen into that trap. That, would be genius.

  290. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Awesomus Maximus: Yeah, it was in the first episode when they showed their *real* real life. Unless the writers ran out of ideas and are recycling the David character and he’s going to pull a towel off the gypsy girl and get kicked out.

  291. danimal35 says:

    Alex Gordon or Snider?

    Gonna be at the ‘Stros/Brewers game in an hour…I called up Big Bad Brett…hopefully I get to witness

  292. ichirosan says:

    20 man dynasty league… H2H 6×6, with Holds and OPS… we keep 20 players based on a tiered system.

    I give:
    Trevor Cahill
    Colby Lewis
    Troy Glaus

    I get:
    Daniel Bard
    David Aardsma
    Brett Cecil

    I wouldn’t be able to keep Cahill or Lewis. However. Any other player in the deal I at least have a shot at keeping. However, I’m currently 2nd in the standings, and don’t want to hurt my team.

  293. Donnie Baseball says:

    Finally!!!! Kila called up. Now are they going to play him?

  294. peter says:

    @Donnie Baseball: It’s the peasant Royals; he’ll be on the bench. They only called him up to make room in AAA for Mike Jacobs.

  295. royce! says:

    Howard HBP and then PHI pulled him to pinch run Ransom. I assume Howard had to leave because of an injury…anyone see what happened? How bad did it look?

  296. GrandSlamSingle says:

    @royce!: Howard twisted his ankle while lunging back to 2nd. He had to helped off the field and down the dugout stairs.

  297. royce! says:

    @GrandSlamSingle: Ugh. Well, thanks for the quick response.

  298. Tom Emanski says:

    @GrandSlamSingle: Well that’s just wonderful. It’s going to be really fun trying to find a 1B replacement for 15 days. Better not be a high ankle sprain.

  299. Bob says:

    Wuertz or Mike G. Who gets more saves the rest of the year?

  300. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Bob: Mike

  301. poot says:

    Grey, would you do Werth for Kinsler in a 14 team keeper league with OPS?

    (Each team keeps 10 players, so good 2B/3B/SS are pretty hard to get.)

    I mean, I know Kinsler could be amazing, but is it worth taking his issues (Awful on the road, awful in the second half, and injury prone) in H2H?

  302. Wilsonian says:

    @Grey: thanks for the help. It’s working for me so far, but my team would be wise to get a hit here and there so I don’t lose all my hitting categories.

    Follow-up(s): who do you like better for the rest of the year for a UTIL position (pick one) – Pence, Quentin, Berkman, Vernon, Carlosly or Stanton?

    Suzuki or Montero for the always incredibly significant, your season rides on it, catcher’s spot?

  303. vinko says:

    Good idea to drop Wiggy for Ass-drubal in a 14 team roto?

  304. TastelessGarbage says:

    NeoGio & Floyd both perfect thru four….

  305. Wilsonian says:

    @TastelessGarbage: not anymore. Bases clearing triple by…wait for it…Brent Lillibridge.

  306. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Grey: Ha! The gypsy girl… okay, I guess this RW is more interesting than A-Rod’s Hunt for #600, since we haven’t written a word about that while we’ve gabbed RW for several days now.

    By the way, was it just me or did they find a way to make Mardi Gras look boring as hell? How is that possible?

  307. Martin says:

    @grey- i’m following the COL vs. CHC game on stat tracker for DLR’s start. In the 2nd i just read

    Baker doubled to pitcher
    Baker to third on wild pitch

    The count it 0/0 on the wild pitch. Not a good sign

  308. Grey

    Grey says:

    @poot: I’d do it in a keeper if I were out of it this year.

    @Wilsonian: Quentin… Montero…

    @vinko: Sure

    @TastelessGarbage: Jinxer.

    @Awesomus Maximus: Jimmy (sp?) seems like he loved the opportunity to flash her chest. Is she a confirmed stripper or does she just pretend to be one?

    @Martin: Luckily the Rockies are scoring 15 runs a game.

  309. Tom Emanski says:

    Could Gordon have found his power stroke? Trying to decide between him and Valencia. No specific needs.

  310. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Grey: I think she’s a slut in real life, she just plays one on reality TV.

  311. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Tom Emanski: I’d go with Gordon.

    @Awesomus Maximus: Basketball player boyfriend, “Yeah, uh, could you pretend you don’t know me?” “Why, Cody?” “Cause my family’s here and you’re a ho.”

  312. Chris says:

    Drop Dotel for Mike Gonzalez?

  313. Chris says:

    Randy Wells (Mil, Cin) over Brett Anderson this week?

  314. Martin says:

    @grey- with no specific needs should i drop bruce, starlin, medlen, or cecil?

  315. Wilsonian says:

    Read that Hanrahan and Meek are sharing duties, which sounds kinda gross, but Hanrahanananan will get the nod if both are rested. Anyway, with that bit of info, and with Storen possibly sharing time, would you take a Mike G. Joint over either one?

  316. Wilsonian says:

    @Grey: you still like Storen more than Mike G. or you would drop him for Mike G.?

  317. Wilsonian says:

    Thanks for f-ing up my periphs, JJ. Now I’m being forced to play Kershaw tonight and hope he doesn’t just completely blow it for me…

  318. @Wilsonian:

    Yeah I played him to cover my slim K’s lead and he lost me the WHIP cat, oh well, rather he do this in a week where I didnt need him.

  319. Steve says:

    Happy to be proved wrong, but I could be the only person in the entire fantasy baseball community to have Ernesto Frieri on their roster.

    And he gets the Hold!

    Love it when a plan comes together.

  320. elwood blues says:

    NL only 4×4.. I have Glaus and am watching my lead slip in HR and RBI’s.. I just got an offer for C.Lee.
    Worth it?
    Is C.Lee still a threat to be lost to the AL?

  321. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    @Grey: She was like, “I think I got some weird vibes from him.” He barely gave you a one-armed hug, hung out with his family instead of you as much as he could, then put his iPod on when he did hang out with you for a minute… plus his sister asked, “Who the hell are you?” What kind of ‘weird vibes’ do you think she was referring to?

  322. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

    Blargh! I knew Johnson pitching at Petco was too good to be true. Of course he gets shelled there…

  323. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Steve: You are the only one to own him, so that means he’s pitching for only you, which is nice.

    @elwood blues: I’d take Lee if you don’t need the position eligibility. Lee’s not going anywhere, his contract’s terrible.

    @Awesomus Maximus: Then the gypsy girl walked past banging a tambourine.

  324. Steve says:

    @Grey: It’s these little things that make a MR B’s life worth living.

  325. VinWins

    VinWins says:

    Fowler carted off after making game-saving catch against the wall in the 9th.

  326. sal says:

    @Grey: please reiterate your hatred for rick porcello and tell me to stay away…

  327. Eddy says:

    Which fantasy sites have the ability to implement keepers? I read that Yahoo! doesn’t which was a big shock.

  328. Grey

    Grey says:

    @VinWins: Yeah, saw it. Didn’t look good.

    @sal: Unless you’re in an AL-Only league, I’m not sure what stats you’re looking at of his that make him appealing.

    @Eddy: ESPN and CBS do. CBS charges.

  329. Eddy says:

    Thanks. And one last question, when you decide to make a player a keeper that wasn’t originally drafted (say in a 25 round draft), what value is he assigned in next season’s draft? I’d like to do the whole “the round you drafted your player in 2010 is where you draft him in 2011”.

  330. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Eddy: Should lose around 3 rounds a year. So 25th round this year is 22 next year and so on. If you have two number ones, then you lose round 2 too, or you’re only allowed one guy from each round. Can go either way.

  331. Eddy says:

    Ok, that’s perfect. However if a guy who wasn’t originally drafted in 2010 is kept bc he busted onto the scene from the FA pool, what round value is he assigned for 2011? CAN they even be kept?

  332. @Eddy: My keeper’s been on Yahoo for 4 years now, but the Commish does all the grunt work in tracking keepers. He’s good like that.

    We keep FA pickups in exchange for a 25th rounder. Players kept for multiple years are assigned a value based on their end of season Yahoo rank as per our format. For example, I kept Waino last year in exchange for an 8. This season he’ll probably cost me a 2nd rounder if I decide to keep him.

  333. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Eddy: Free agents are kept in the last round. Then if you have three in the 25th, you have assign one to the 23rd one to the 24th and one to the 25th.

  334. rowdyroddyP says:

    how valueable is delmon young in a keeper league??

    whats your book on him next year?

    @Grey: @3FingersBrown:

    Ohhh ok I figured that’s what it would be, just wasn’t sure what happened with multiple FA.
    Do you mind emailing me a somewhat more detailed explanation of how you guy work out your keepers and how you draft the next year and hwatnot? What type of work does the commish do? I’m the commish of my main league and I’d like to make a keeper next season, but without leaving Yahoo. It’s [email protected]. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Grey says:

    @rowdyroddyP: Assuming he doesn’t fall hard in the last month, he’ll probably be around a top 70 player next year. Could go 25/15.

    EDIT: Word

  337. Steve says:

    @Grey: Um, you mean ***fall*** hard, don’t you?

  338. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Steve: Ha… Uh, yeah.

  339. Howard says:

    @Grey Qualls or Wuertz going forward? Who is the less of a brainfreeze?

  340. @Eddy: I’m really the wrong person to ask, since I don’t have all of the rules constantly asking my commish the rules in the offseason, but what Grey and I wrote are it in a nutshell Eddy. We play 12 team h2h 6×6 – standard 10 + OBP and QS.

    The Commish just tracks where everyone was drafted and what if any draft picks are traded on a spreadsheet – since we allow trades of the following years picks. Once the season is over, rosters are locked for FA pickups but players and draft picks for the upcoming season can be traded. About 6 weeks before the draft, draft order is determined at random and then we select our five keepers.

    To keep people from dumping picks for players and loading up for the playoffs only to run away with the money, half of the following years buy-in is paid the season before. If a guy’s going to leave, he has to state it and he won’t be allowed to move picks. It’s an honor system that we use and it’s far from perfect, but most of the guys in this league are friends and we draft live. I wouldn’t recommend this format unless you know guys are going to stick around for multiple years. Otherwise there’s too much room for shenanigans.

    We don’t do inflation like a lot of leagues though. As I said, players kept for multiple years are kept at the cost of their previous season’s final Yahoo rank, according to our 6×6 format – so John Hamilton for example, whose owner drafted him in ’08 ( and who missed almost half of 09 due to injury) was kept for cheap this year. This is sort of a “consolation prize” for having kept a guy who got hurt or had a down year. Next season, he’ll probably cost his owner a first round pick if he decides to keep him, since he’s posting great numbers.

    A lot of leagues also have a maximum number of years that owners can keep a guy, but we do not – so I’ve had Pujols since I drafted him with my first pick, when one guy decided not to keep him after the great elbow scare of ’08. Obviously I’m going to keep him until he’s 97 years old and stops hitting.

    What else… players not in Yahoo can be selected in the draft, but a roster slot has to be kept open for them.

    There are a lot of variations you can mess with. I’d talk to the guys you’re going to play with and see what works best and most importantly – make sure EVERYONE knows ALL the rules so you don’t have any disagreements – especially if there’s $$$ involved. Like I said, the guys in my league are buddies and co-workers so we play fair and avoid conflict because we can punch each other in the face if there’s a disagreement.

    @grey: assuming ibanez is healthy, ibanez or tabata this week in weekly roto? Thanks.

  342. yankees2010 says:

    Hello Grey,
    I’m coming off a bit of a high after catching my opponent in Ks and ERA with Dotel and Brian Wilson for an 8-3 Win. If only Furcal could have stolen a base.

    Anywho, I am having some trouble deciding who to start as my Fourth OF and UTIL. My choices are Pence, Ibanez, Damon and Dom Brown (Did I make a mistake dumping Rasmus for Brown by the way?). Ibanez and Damon are nursing some boo boos. Many questions.

    Thanks much Grey.

  343. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Howard: Qualls isn’t a closer anymore. He was traded. Wuertz…

    @herschel: Apples and oranges… You need steals? Then Tabata, otherwise Ibanez…

    @yankees2010: Pence

    One (or four) more Grey:
    Would it be worth picking up Hellickson for his start tomorrow and dropping one of Dotel, Wuertz or Meek. We do have Holds, so Octaviola does have some value. I grabbed Wuertz and Meek for Saves when I lost Dotel and Rauch as Closers (desperation set in!). I could slip Jeremy into one of my 4 RP spots. How long does he plan on being up?

  345. royce! says:

    I need to drop someone in order to grab a C (likely Snyder) for next week. Again, this weekly h2h counts OBP and XBH, as well as the other 5×5.

    I’ve narrowed it down to one of Wigginton or Asdrubal (my 2B until Pedroia heals), one of my 8 OF I have for 4 spots (Markakis, Quentin, Gardner, Stanton, Tabata, Carlos Lee, Domonic Brown, Bruce) or Jeremy Hellickson.

    Because I have Andrus and can start Tabata and/or Gardner, I don’t think I need more steals, so I am leaning toward dropping Asdrubal…but then I wonder what Showalter’s plans for Wigginton are, and think maybe I should start Asdrubal, hold Wigginton, and drop Hellickson.

    I’d prefer not to drop any of my OF b/c I could use one or two to trade for a SP and/or a C better than Snyder.

    I suppose after all this it really comes down to whether Hellickson will stick around. Should I trust what TB has been saying, that Hellickson will only be up for one start? I don’t see how they could start Davis over him if he does well v. MIN.

    So Dribble, Wiggy, or Hell’s Son?

  346. Grey

    Grey says:

    @yankees2010: Not up for long. Don’t drop anyone.

    @royce!: One start probably. Lose Hellickson. Or just drop any of your bench bats. You’re hoarding, man.

  347. Steve says:

    @Grey: You liking Scott Olsen @ Arizona on Tuesday in H2H?

  348. Steve says:

    @Steve: It’s either him or Mazzaro…

  349. Steve says:

    @Grey: Sorry to drag you away from whatever you were doing. Just scrolled up a bit…

  350. Steve says:

    @Grey: Actually I do have a question. Heilman should really be owned, right?

  351. royce! says:

    @Grey: That’s funny, I’m watching Animal Hoarders… “My name is royce! and I’m a hoarder! I want to get rid of them, but one appreciates the value of my OFs!”

    Seriously, though, just like the guy I’m watching, I have a completely reasonable explanation for why I own each of these OFs…and my team smells just like I imagine his house does!

    I have 3 offers out right now, and will send a few more later…I swear.

  352. Martin says:

    @grey- I was just offered Greinke and Span for Price. Should i do it? However, I’m not much of a span guy. He’s pretty blah at the OF position. I could try and ask for torres, Choo, or an injured pedroia instead of Span. What do u think?

  353. Would it be too much to offer Sandoval and Tabata/Stubbs for Gavin Floyd? Floyd has been so dominant.
