No, they don’t refer to these Nolan Reimold-types as being “Grey’s stubborn and unable to let go of past” sleepers.  No, I’m not just recycling posts from 2009.  Though how about that Garrett Atkins?!  These players are post-hype sleepers, y’all!  Catch the excitement!  Don’t worry, I won’t push Carlos Quentin on you.  Though he is reporting he’s fully healthy.  (I’m joking; Quentin is never fully healthy.  Padres might want to consider the Tijuana farmacias to cut back on Quentin’s overhead (and under-oblique. (Bee tee dubya, this is gonna be a challenge counting how many end parentheticals I’m gonna need. (A little help?)))) (Phew.)  I might’ve cooled on Nolan Reimold at some point last year (after pouring a Slurpee down my pants), but “if you really love something set it free” isn’t just for Hallmark cards.  It works just as well for fantasy baseball and rabid dogs.  So what can we expect of Nolan Reimold for 2012 fantasy baseball and what makes him a sleeper?

In 267 ABs last year, he had 13 homers and 7 steals *whispering fast* while only hitting .247.  So he’s no young Ichiro Suzuki, as someone who doesn’t know baseball would call him.  I’m more interested in the homers and steals.  Neither is out of line for him.  He has sneaky 7-10 steal speed and his power knows no limits (<–total exaggeration).  His 13 homers in 267 ABs is just about in line with what he’s capable of.  His HR/FB of 14.8 doesn’t look obscene.  If he can get 500 ABs, and at the age of 28 he should, he could easily reach 25 homers.  With that, he’ll get some RBIs and a few less runs.  I’m going to be crazy optimistic and say in 500 ABs his line will be 65/24/80/.250/10.  To throw back at you a name previously mentioned, is that line that different from Carlos Quentin?  Not really.  It’s rare to find a guy that can hit for power and chuck in some steals.  Granted, it’s even rarer (is that a word? Who cares!) that Reimold actually hits for power and chucks in some steals.  I get it; he’s disappointed in the past.  This is a trust exercise; fall into Reimold’s arms one more time.

  1. chata says:

    going into 2012 , he’s slotted into a full-time job .
this should make a big difference , as i don’t think he has a history
of weakening as the season progresses .

with markakis out , rumors are flying around about the O’s being interested in clowny .
    how absurd .
but even if the O’s management is buying into the mayan theory ,
reimold should have the 1st fifty games to establish his worth to the team .

  2. giantjj says:

Grey, am i right to assume you are all for targeting a discounted Adam dunn this year? Also, my fantasy baseball season begins when you kick off your rankings. I’m ready to get going if you are. No pressure, but I’m running out of fingernail to chew.

  3. royce! says:

Who’s next? Manny Parra? Fred Lewis?

  4. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

    love me some Nolan Reimold…

After my off-season discussion last week i’ve been shopping around a few of my players.

I have an offer for Reimold on the table right now. hopefully the dude accepts!

  5. Wake Up says:

@Grey: @royce!: Ian Stewart! Ian Stewart! Ian Stewart!

    Get well Awesomus.

  6. royce! says:

@Grey: I guess you were right to encourage me to keep it around!

I agree with Reimold as a late flyer. I like the projected line- it actually is Quentin’s 2011 plus 9 steals, which would be great for a late round pickup. It looks like BAL will finally give him a full season, esp. if they don’t pick up anyone else to DH (like Scott), since they don’t have any great OF prospects due up any time soon. Would be nice if he moved up in the lineup, though.

Reimold’s LD rate has also been alarmingly bad, but it is reflected in your projections. In three MLB seasons, he’s never hit 15% LDs. BAL’s offense looks like it’s going to be funny this year- lots of K’s and flyouts, spinkled with some HR. Oh, and a Markakis double once in a while. Sparkakis…

  7. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Wake Up: He’s not done!

@royce!: That’s a well placed ellipses on Markakis. He doesn’t deserve an exclamation mark.

  8. Grey

    Grey says:

@royce!: Oh, and off the top of my head I think Adam Jones is a ground ball machine.

  9. Cheese

    Cheese says:

@Grey: Hey Grey, haven’t been posting much in the offseason, but I’ve still been reading the articles every day. Anyways, I was just curious if you were going to make any posts or adjusted rankings for leagues without standard scoring. For example, there are a lot of leagues that use OBP or SLG in addition to the basic categories. This usually causes me to adjust your rankings slightly based on these additional categories (which I don’t mind doing, but getting your opinion is always a plus)

As always, keep up the awesome work.

  10. TheNewGuy says:

Grey whats your gut feeling on Kendry Morales. Reckon he’ll be healthy, productive and have the DH over Trumbone next year? Lot of question marks, but he could be a valuable keeper for me at just 6 bucks.

Don’t have to decide which to keep just yet, but as of now who do you like the most (or neither) for my final keeper slot for the season ahead: Morales ($6) , Crisp ($5), or E Santana ($7)?

  11. mdig66 says:

This punk Jason Collette is pimping SAGNOF as his own in his column over at Rotowire. Why are they using our shizzy? Should I out him and tell him sounds like Grey was here?

Saves ain’t got no face: At the major league level, this is absolutely true. Saves come from Mariano Rivera just as they come from Shawn Chacon. However, know the faces of the guys in the minor leagues that are piling up saves because those are the prospects you do not want to roster. Teams rarely, and I mean rarely, put talented arms in closing roles in the upper levels. If they are in the minors enough to pile up 20-plus saves in a season, odds are they’re going to do it again in the minors before they ever do it in the majors.

  12. royce! says:

@Grey: Yeah, I wanted to gloss over that detail, because otherwise my point would have been “there will be flyballs, groundouts, and strikeouts,” which is not the most interesting thing to say about a baseball team– having followed the Padres all 2011, I can tell you for certain that it is not interesting to watch, either… (more ellipses!)

  13. Grey

    Grey says:

@Cheese: I’m here to take questions about other leagues, but I don’t have time to cover every league with different scoring cats.

@TheNewGuy: At $6, I’d keep him if he’s healthy in the spring, I wouldn’t draft him for much more than that though.

@mdig66: Eh, Jason’s always been a fan of ours.

  14. Grey

    Grey says:

@royce!: Ha! Yeah, not as fun of an angle.

  15. Steve says:

The Alex Gordon post should be along any day now.

  16. mic says:

In the third round, 12 team 5×5, who would you take: Pence, Holliday, Bruce, Morse, or Zimmerman… I own Pence in a keeper league and my bias always leads me to pick him in every mock i do… I’m trying to broaden my horizons or is Pence ok at mid to end of the 3rd round… i usually try to get get an elite 1B, 2B/3B/SS, or my first OF within the first 3-4 rounds…

  17. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

can we FFWD to next monday already… I need rankings!!! hahahah

  18. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

Maholm to the cubs for a 1yr 4.25Million after going 6-14 last year. Word in Chicago is that the Cubs are very close to a deal with the Tigers involving Matt Garza, however they’re arguing over Jacob Turner, Tigers don’t want to give him up.

  19. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

what are your thoughts on clay buccholz this year Grey? seems to be done with the injuries. do you see him bouncing back? I know his 2010 numbers were ridiculous.

  20. Wake Up says:

@Grey: You looking at that .591 SLG? I wouldn’t be shocked if he was another sleeper pick.

  21. Grey

    Grey says:

@Wake Up: Stewart? He has power and speed, average and playing time have always been his issues.

  22. That Guy says:

Hey Grey…wondering who should be my 5th keeper. I currently have Miggy, Cano, Beltre, and Lincecum as keepers. Which of the following should I keep as my 5th guy…Morse, Utley, Gallardo, Jesus, Lawrie?

    PS: Get those rankings out!!!!

  23. giantjj says:

Adam Dunn has an ADP of 291 at MDC. It seems crazy to me that he could fall so far. It was a horrendous season but Dunn was very consistent before 2011. Is it reasonable to think that he had trouble adjusting to a new team and a new league and his confidence just spun out?

  24. anarchy burger says:

hey guys- i’m loving me some howie kendrick this year. obviously i’m not gonna be alone in my man love but hitting in front of pujols he should have a huge year. what do you guys think??? can’t think of to many 2b i’d rather have…..

  25. Fanthead says:

Today, I will be trivial and off-point.

Agreed that we shouldn’t care if “rarer” is a word. But “ya’ll” needs to spelled “y’all.” [NOTE PLACEMENT OF APOSTROPHE] I once made a colossal/embarrassing mistake in not noticing this in a book I was editing, but I notice it now…everywhere I go. Yes, I have no girlfriends. (Attempted Joke.) Plus, Southerners have rights too.

RIGHT: The word “you” uniting with “all” to form “y’all.”

WRONG: The word “ya” uniting with non-word “ll” to form “ya’ll.”

If none of this makes sense, it’s because yous guys have real lives.

Plus: I’m pickin’ at Grey for mentioning Reimold who I wish more people would forget about. The other thing I like about him, Reimold, is he’s a gamer. (Grey’s not a gamer; he just…IS.) Being a gamer is not as valuable as having 80 skills in every pocket–but it’s not meaningless either.

  26. Fanthead says:

PS: My mistake was colossal/embarrassing because it was a SOUTHERN book I was editing. Didn’t mean to imply that Grey had been egregious in saying “ya’ll” on baseball website!!! Apologies.

  27. Grey

    Grey says:

@giantjj: Sure, it’s possible, but his body type/skill set usually goes down hill very fast.

@anarchy burger: Yeah, you won’t be alone.

@Fanthead: That makes sense, I will forever spell it y’all, y’all! (Assuming I remember.)

  28. Dom says:

Do I keep Riemold in 10 team AL only keeper league? Year one of contract at $7. 4 x 4 league.

  29. Wake Up says:

@Grey: I’m a believer. I think he fits in nicely at Wrigley. Budweiser is on the decline, but MMD is on the rise, y’all!

PS The only thing that bugs me is when it’s used in the singular form. Y’all coming over tonight? Yeah. I’ll be there. Cool, y’all should come. I said I was coming. Who else are you talking to?

  30. Grey

    Grey says:

@Dom: Give me an idea as to what players around that cost would be… Sounds about right though.

@Wake Up: Ha… Yeah, after some research it seems Hemingway used ya’ll, what a slacker!

  31. royce! says:

@Fanthead: So what is the proper way to abbreviate “ya all”? Maybe that’s what Hemingway was using.

  32. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

Check me out grey, i’m doing some negotiations.

Dude wants to give me Napoli ($14 – 3 years), Price ($11 – last year of contract), and Jarrod parker ($5 – 5 years)

    I give:
    Bailey $16 (2 years), Arencibia ($2 – 4 years) and S-Rod ($6 5 years)

    I rejected.

    Was going to counter-offer with

    Me giving

    Arencibia, Bailey, Holland ($9 – 5 years), and S-Rod

Napoli, Price, Parker, and Pedroia ($21 one year)

I just hate to give up Arencibia for such a good price. But i think Toronto has a few good Catching prospects coming up.

    sound about right?

  33. Black Beard says:

Please weigh in on these trades, 7 keeper, 10 team, 6×5 (+OPS):

Prince and Hamilton for Stanton and Reyes

Prince, Hamilton and Kemp for McCutchen, Pujols and Kinsler

Which trade do you like more for the Prince side?

  34. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

@Grey: thanks man, i have a few different offers out there. Hard to guage.

I also offered another team the same players for Des Jennings, Brett LAwrie, Greg Holland and Vinnie Pestano. I think i’d rather have this deal.

    hard to tell.

  35. Black Beard says:

@Grey: Thanks Grey. Same league, what about Bautista and Reyes for Fielder and Pence?

  36. Steve says:

Madson signs with the Reds (it says here).

  37. A2K says:

@Grey: What DO you think of Gordon?
    Rather have Heyward? BJ?
    In a vacuum of course.

  38. Terrence Mann says:

If Kuroda signs with Boston, he’s gonna be rooned for us.

Plus, my smart phone is trained to the point that it plugs in “Kuroda” after typing in Ku. I don’t want that near superpower to go to waste.

  39. Muchaco says:

This comment doesn’t belong here, but will you be doing any more Razzball T-shirts this year? How did the last two offering sell?

I’d personally like to see a Sonavabench one or SAGNOF

Looking forward to another season with you Grey!

  40. Grey

    Grey says:

@Muchaco: Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, there will be more t-shirts.

  41. Sunny-Side Up says:

@Grey: Which would you rather have.

    Jennings and Lawrie

    Lawrie, Bourjos, and montero?

  42. Wake Up says:

Black SAGNOF! t-shirts with white lettering…”Make it work!”

  43. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

has anyone ever used Fangraphs projections? just curious, i’m obviously going to be using Grey’s once they come out next week, but i just wondered if anyone has reviewed theirs and how accurate they were? who they tended to favor? etc…

  44. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

breaking news: Logan Morrison just tweeted “Just heard from my boy that Prince to Seattle is a done deal…”.

Wonder what that means for Smoak / Carp.

  45. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

@The Talented Mr. Dope Man: HAHAHAHAHAH, I’m sorry guys, I haven’t been on twitter from my phone in a few weeks, and the tweet was from 20 days ago… HAHAHAHA

sorry for the false alarm…. Goes to show you what Logan Morrison’s “inside information” is worth…

    my apologies.

  46. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

no baseball news today besides the Madson signing (which was a great move by the Reds).

have you ever caught the Clubhouse Confidential on MLB network? kinda cool, i’ve just caught onto it in the last few weeks. Show based on analytics. They actually had the A’s Assistant GM on today, said they “sold the house” because of the moves of the Angels and Rangers…. He said they’d have no chance of competing.

  47. Grey

    Grey says:

@The Talented Mr. Dope Man: I’ve never seen it, surprised to hear him say that they won’t compete. Can’t imagine that’ll get the fans excited or that management likes that.

  48. The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

@Grey: yeah he said that they’re waiting to hear from the league about a new stadium so they’re kind of in a “limbo stage”…

Ha the pitchers are going to have to wear name tags in spring training…

  49. chata says:

    @The Talented Mr. Dope Man:

    name tags for pitchers ?
how about for the whole team ??
    except for coco crips .
he’ll be the one with the under-sized cap .

  50. Robinson Checo says:

Henderson Alvarez of the Jays- a fantasy sleeper or a schmohawk? Im in a 7 man AL only keeper and am trying to decide between him and Max Scherzer (or if I punt and keep Sergio Santos). Can Alvarez equal Scherzer this year and outperform him in 2013? thanks man.

  51. royce! says:

Luke Scott signed with the Rays, which is a good sign for Reimold’s playing time. Nice of them to resolve this while your sleeper post was still fresh.

  52. Nice call w/ Reimold. I tend to end up with him every season in at least two leagues because I don’t want to give up on him a year too early.

  53. Grey

    Grey says:

    @royce!: O’s for obliges.

@Jason Collette: Thanks! One of the commenters above was about to take a sledgehammer to their computer when they saw what you wrote at Rotowire.

  54. royce! says:

@Grey: And here I thought it stood for “outstanding.” Yours makes more sense.

  55. chata says:

    A ‘s Fans :

seeing this sad news , ,

    reminded me that ,
due to this nit-wit’s foreign policy/international-marketing wizardry ,
the A ‘s will be leading the major leagues , after the 1st day of play !!
    YAY .

until then , let us hang our “caps” on that .

it , obviously , trumps all off-season trade activity ,
and holds a shizz-load more weight than any pompous title , such as
    ‘defending world champs’ .

should the unthinkable happen , we can rely on the short-term memory
loss that this readership is so famous for , and switch to flat-out denial mode …. something that we will , regrettably , be all too familiar with , by season’s end .

    go with it .
    green and gold .

  56. @Grey:

I see that now. To the group, my apologies. That came to me on Twitter when I put a call out for “fantasy truths.” I should have known that a catchphrase that awesome originated from here!

  57. Sunny Side - up says:

@Grey: which group would you rather have…

    Hosmer and Kipnis

    lawrie, bourjos, montero

  58. Wake Up says:

More saves this year…Mo or Shawn Chacon?

  59. Sunny Side - up says:

last questions of the night grey,

    you’re help is greatly appreciated.

    1. arencibia or salvador perez?

    2. eduardo nunez or sean rodriguez?
