Many of you might not realize this, but I try to stay consistent in advice.  When you write 3,000 words/day, sometimes things get blurred.  I like so-and-so and don’t like that so-and-so, then the first so-and-so gets cold and I no longer like that so-and-so or the 2nd so-and-so gets hot and I like him, so I no longer like so-and-so, but do like that so-and-so.  Or sometimes I’m just so-so on a particular so-and-so, but that so-so is fluid and a so-and-so can become a little more than just so-so or a little less than just so-so.  BTW, those who just Googled for “so-so fantasy advice,” welcome!  You’re at the right place.  So, my so-so feelings on Nathan Eovaldi have moved up, and he is rattling off irrefutable evidence that he should be owned.  Yesterday, Eovaldi took a perfect game into the 7th, ending up with 7 IP, 0 ER, 1 hit, zero walks, 9 Ks, ERA at 3.35, and, outside of one start in Yankee Stadium, he hasn’t allowed more than four earned runs in any start.  He’s thrown three starts with one hit or less!  Johnny Lasagna may have been exposed as a noodle arm, but the Italians still have Rachel Ray’s E-O-V-A.  Eovaldi is now at 8.2 K/9, 1.1 BB/9, 3.36 xFIP; those numbers suggest he should be owned in every league, and I’m in agreement.  The origin story film, Velo, may have received mixed reviews, but is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, and I loved Jordan Hicks’ cameo.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw this weekend in fantasy baseball:

Jake Bauers – 2-for-3, 3 runs, and his 3rd homer, hitting .240.  More impressively, he has a .372 OBP.  You’d think someone with a name like Jake Bauers he’d have no time to walk so much.  Shows you that you can save the country, your daughter and the president all while finding time for low-impact cardio.

C.J. Cron – 2-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 17th homer.  Him breaking out after being under The Sciosciapath’s control is so unsurprising.  If Trout went to another team, he’d be a 70/70/.450 guy.

Joey Wendle – 2-for-3, 2 runs and his 3rd homer, hitting near-.450 in the last week.  Go ahead, Mr. Wendle!

Steven Matz – 6 1/3 IP, 1 ER, 8 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.31 vs. Blake Snell – 7 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 8 baserunners, 9 Ks, ERA at 2.09.  Snell, man.  “Oh, he relieved Matz.”  Snell, man, on the Rays.  “Nah, he relieved Matz.”  You’re thinking of Gsellman.  “Fine, Blake Gsnell is awesome!”  I’m talking about Blake Snell!  “Oh, he’s okay, but not an All-Star.”

Kyle Tucker – 0-for-3 as he was promoted on Saturday.  I just gave you my Kyle Tucker fantasy.  It revealed Cecil Cooper is a wizard, and you weren’t ready to handle it.  In 80 games in Triple-A, he had 14 homers, 14 steals and hit .306.  Here’s what I want to say to that…ZOINKS!  In Prospector Ralph’s top 100 fantasy baseball prospects, he was sixth overall.  And that was before the season even began!  Hard to see another prospect coming up for fantasy that will be as monumental of a call-up as Tucker.  Willie Calhoun might come up, but he doesn’t have power AND speed (caps for emphasis, not due to sticky keyboard).  Tucker should be owned in every league.

Carlos Correa – No activities yet for Correa.  Hopefully if you own Correa, your fantasy league has two categories for Pins & Needles.

Nick Williams – 1-for-3 and his 11th homer, hitting .240, and two homers in the last four games.  Williams is one of those guys who I’m anxious to pick up, so I’m constantly looking at him to see if he’s stringing together some wonderful like your maw-maw crocheting.  Honestly, not sure if that heatness is there yet for Williams, but one more good game and I’m going in.

Enyel De Los Santos – Being called up for Tuesday.  Halleberrylujah!  I love Enyel.  Yes, partially because I own him already, but, hey, what fun is this mishegoss without a rooting interest.  So, in Triple-A, he has an ~8 K/9, ~3 BB/9 and 1.89 ERA.  (Yes, listing ERA is cheating, but shut up!  Okay, his xFIP is 3.89.)  Fine, it’s not amazing and he’s young, but he gets the Mets and I’d give him a whirl.

Joe Musgrove – Will return on Tuesday vs. the Nats.  The Stream-o-Nator likes the start, but robots aren’t as frightened by players returning from injuries.  I could see the start going sideways faster than Frogger with a 18-wheeler bearing down on it.

Nick Kingham – 6 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 4.26.  You know you have too many teams when you could’ve sworn you dropped Kingham everywhere then about two innings into yesterday’s game, it’s like, “I guess I’m starting Kingham in one league.  Here goes nothing, apparently.”  I don’t hate him, never have, it’s just rookie pitchers give you roofies and that’s the sitcom set at an all-girl’s school.  Shoot, shouldn’t have used a thesaurus for “The Facts of Life.”

J.A. Happ – 2 2/3 IP, 6 ER, ERA up to 4.44.  As Fred Willard would say, “Wha’ Happ-ened?”  I feel a DL stint headed Happ’s way, or some team is going to trade for him and get Jokey Smurf’d.

Ryan Borucki – 7 IP, 1 ER, 9 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 2.25.  You can click his name and see what I said about him after his call-up, it wasn’t all bad, but we’re not here to talk about the past!  His next start is in Fenway — that’s more like Barf-yucki.

Kendrys Morales – 2-for-4 and his 10th homer, and his 2nd homer in the last three games.  Could be a light schmotato for power.

Domingo German – 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 5.06.  In my top 100 for the 2nd half, which I’m working on now for release next week, I talk about how awful Severino was in 2016.  This is also why we can’t make any sweeping generalizations about Domingo German, but also why we can’t trust him.

Aroldis Chapman – Dealing with a knee injury, but the Yankees say it’s minor, like the sex worker he tied to a bed for eight hours.  Stay woke!  Yesterday, David Robertson (1 IP, 0 ER) nailed down his 2nd save.

Shane Bieber – 6 IP, 4 ER, 9 baserunners, 7 Ks, ERA at 3.47.  Bieber was given the A’s, and that’s exactly what he had handed to him.  Stream-o-Nator still likes Bieber against the Yankees next time out, and I don’t know if I have those kind of pants marbles.

Stephen Piscotty – 1-for-5, 2 RBIs and his 9th homer, and 2nd homer in the last two days.  What’s the least exciting way to homer in back-to-back games?  Piscotty doesn’t know!  Piscotty doesn’t know!  Well, he should since he did it with back-to-back 1-for-5 games.

Jed Lowrie – 1-for-5 and his 16th homer, hitting .290.  He also homered in back-to-back games, but at least he went 2-for-5 on Saturday.  Ter, if, ick.

Yasiel Puig – Hit his 11th homer, but because we can’t have anything nice or subpar, as the case may be with Puig, he strained his oblique.  That should vaguely knock him out anywhere from 3 to 10 weeks.

Andrew Heaney – 7 IP, 3 ER, 6 baserunners, 10 Ks, ERA at 3.94.  I’m pretty sure he would’ve given up 5 ER in 3 IP if you started him, so not sure how we combat that.  Though, your cammo cargo shorts are a good start.

Justin Anderson – 1 IP, 0 ER and the save because Blake Parker was used in a losing game the day before and we’re relying on The Sciosciapath to make sane, reasonable moves.  First mistake!

Kevin Gausman – 5 IP, 3 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 4.11.  Gausman, please remove your surge protector for the 2nd half.

Chris Davis – 1-for-4 and his 9th homer, and 2nd homer in as many games.  If you can handle a 4-for-24 with four homers, Davis could be heating up.

Kyle Gibson – 7 IP, 3 ER, 8 baserunners, 9 Ks, ERA at 3.59.  You know what postseason award he’s headed for, right?  The Razzballie “Pitcher Who I Picked Up And Dropped Countless Times And Should’ve Just Owned” award.  The metal plaque with the name of the award is larger than the award.

Brian Dozier – 2-for-4, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 13th homer.  Shhh, don’t get hot until after the All-Star Game so a few more people can trade for you.

Eduardo Escobar – 1-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 14th homer, and has 35 doubles.  No one in the majors has 30 doubles.  Cup runneth over with double E’s!

Mitch Garver – 1-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 4th homer, 2nd homer in the last four games and hitting .500 in the last seven days.  Hot schmotato alert (if he’s in the lineup)!

Jake Odorizzi – 6 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 4.28, but three straight solid starts since he altered his mechanics.  In one deeper league, I grabbed him in case he’s turned a corner, and he gets the Rays next.

Mark Reynolds – 2-for-4, 1 run and two homers on Saturday (9, 10).  He also had ten RBIs on Saturday while going 5-for-5, as Saturday was the highest single scoring night in the history of my memory, but I can’t remember further back than about ten days.  I’d also grab Reynolds, because Mini Donkey is dropping haymakers.

Sean Doolittle – Dealing with a strained toe.  What an odd thing to find in a colander!  I tried to pick up Kelvin Herrera in every league I’m in, but this Doolittle injury does sound minor.

Tanner Roark – 4 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 4.76.  Roark more like Ruh-Roark.

J.T. Realmuto – 5-for-6, 2 runs, 3 RBIs, hitting .317.  Jerry Tomato hit five singles for the Juan Pierre cycle plus one.  Don’t you dare try to Juan-up Pierre!

Martin Prado – 4-for-6, 2 runs, hitting .217.  As long as it’s not Martin & Stealin’ Riddle’s playing time.  It wasn’t yesterday, since J.T. 2: The Riddle went 3-for-6, 1 run, 2 RBIs, hitting .269.

Robbie Ray – 4 1/3 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 5.23.  He was only staked to 15 runs thru four innings going against the Padres at home, I mean, what could we expect?  Maybe, I don’t know, FIVE INNINGS FOR THE FREAKIN’ WIN?!  Too much to ask, APPARENTLY!  All you needed was TWO MORE OUTS!  By the way, I’m trying this new keyboard that simulates walking in and out of a LOUD BAR!  I don’t know what’s going on with Ray, but he can’t be started anywhere.  I’m not dropping him yet, but that’s the next step after being unable to start him.  Such a SHAME!

Zack Greinke – 4 1/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 3.39.  Geez, must’ve been something in the air in Arizona this weekend.  It definitely wasn’t moisture from a freakin’ humidor!

Wil Myers – 1-for-6 and a slam (6) and a double legs (3, 4), and three homers on Saturday (3, 4, 5), and that’s just what he did off Robbie Ray.  Kidding, he only hit two homers off Ray, but that’s because Ray was removed before he had chance to surrender more homers.  Effin’ schmohawk.

Trevor Story – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 17th homer, as he returned to the lineup.  Damn, I fell for the ol’ “Player’s going to be out at least a few days so pick up his replacement, then the player who was supposed to be out plays.”  It’s a tricky gambit, and now I am the proud owner of Pat Valaika.

Ryon Healy – 2-for-4, 5 RBIs and his 18th homer, hitting .245.  I know he’s hitting for a little less on average and it’s a different position, but think about how you would never think about dropping Trevor Story, yet you’re not sure about picking up Healy.  At least 62.2% of you, because that’s how unowned he is.

Anibal Sanchez – 6 2/3 IP, 1 ER, 3 baserunners, 8 Ks, ERA at 2.72.  *sees ERA of all my fantasy teams, looks at Anibal Sanchez’s ERA, opens window, jumps down one story into rose bush*  OW!!! *sees my neighbor calling to his daughter*  “Anibal, come here, you’re so great and wildly undervalued by society.”

Sean Newcomb – 3 2/3 IP, 5 ER, ERA at 3.44.  Not trying to rub salt in your wound, but I said to sell Newcomb when he had a 2.71 ERA.

Junior Guerra – 6 IP, 1 ER, 10 baserunners, 4 Ks, ERA at 2.79.  In one league, I picked up Guerra about six to eight weeks ago, and haven’t found a reason to drop him.  Trust me, it’s not without looking.

Ryan Braun – Hit the DL.  This is only his 2nd DL stint, which puts him about two DL stints behind his preseason projected pace.

Lorenzo Cain – 1-for-4, 2 runs as he was activated from the DL.  Makes me a little “emoji on the chin” that Braun was just sacrificed to the DL Gods to make room for Cain…Sugar.

Jesus Aguilar – 2-for-4, 3 runs, 4 RBIs and his 21st and 22nd homer.  No kidding, the best moves the Brewers have done all year are the moves to put Braun on the DL.  They should just trade Braun for a partially opened fake vomit, gag gift.  To further the point, Jesus Aguilar has been a top 25 hitter this year on the Player Rater.

David Price – 4 2/3 IP, 4 ER, ERA at 4.44.  In this game, the Sawx scored 15 runs, but most came after he was out of the game, so he didn’t exactly break win’d, but it was the Royals, so pretty much what I said for Ray applies here.  Only fortunate thing (for me), I don’t own Price and won’t.

Andrew Benintendi – 4-for-5, 2 runs, hitting .293.  He reached base ten straight times before striking out in the 8th inning.  Impressive, until you realize he struck out against Jason Adam, who is a fan who won a Royals’ giveaway.  Kidding, he was a top prospect *does a lame job of covering mouth* in 2014.

Jason Hammel – Moved to the bullpen.  Taking his spot will be Burch Smith.  Burch is the Root Beer King of Missouri.

Whit Merrifield – 5-for-5, 1 run, 1 RBI, hitting .303.  To Whit, nothing in excess, except base hits.

Alcides Escobar – His consecutive game streak ended at 421.

Tyler Chatwood – 5 2/3 IP, 7 ER, ERA at 5.01.  “Theo Epstein is a genius!”  Then, “Well, genius is often misunderstood, like how I don’t understand how Chatwood is still in the rotation.”

Billy Hamilton – 1-for-3, 2 runs and his 20th and 21st steal, hitting .231.  Billy Hamilton has the ability to turn the routine into a Little League-type play.  Whether it’s him stealing a base and forcing errors by the other team or hitting with the ability of a 12-year-old.

Eugenio Suarez – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 19th homer, hitting .315.  Total broken record with this but–Total broken record with this but–Total broken–Sorry.  I just can’t get over Eugenio fractured his thumb this season and is doing this.  He is definitely going to be in my top 100 for the 2nd half.  Easily.  Looking at top 40-50 right now.

Mike Fiers – 6 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 6 Ks, ERA at 3.65.  Like the founding father who doesn’t have a smash hit musical about him, I cannot tell a lie, I streamed Fiers even though the Stream-o-Nator was iffy on it.  I apologize to our robot overlords and Elon Musk.

Nicholas Castellanos – Out with a mild wrist injury.  Castellanos said, “I’d only be able to hit the ball 178 MPH today at best.”

Cole Hamels – 2/3 IP, 3 ER, ERA at 4.37.  He also gave up four unearned runs, but the Fantasy Baseball God, Unearnedio, showered Hamels in reprieve.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx – 5 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 5 Ks, ERA at 3.71.  ABD making it as easy as 1, 2, 4.  As simple as do re fa.

Austin JacksonGiants traded him to the Rangers.  Whew!  I was worried we might see Willie Calhoun at some point this season.

Carlos Martinez – 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 3.05.  Forget if we (I) deemed C-Mart fixed after his last start, but, yes, I think he’s fine once again to start everywhere, except Coors.

Jack Flaherty – 2 1/3 IP, 2 ER, ERA at 3.34.  Flaherty?  That’s insulting.

Yairo Munoz – 2-for-2, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and a slam (5) and legs (4), hitting .288.  He’s been hot recently, but the Cards don’t even play their best hitter (Jo-Ma) every day.  A flustercuck, indeed.

Marcell Ozuna – 1-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI, hitting .275.  He didn’t much of anything yesterday, and ma effin’ nishtana.

Steven Duggar – 2-for-6, 1 run, and hit leadoff, as he was called up with the eradication of Austin Jackson.  Duggar is one of 19 kids and had 4 homers and 11 steals in Triple-A.  Duggar’s got more siblings than power, but he should walk enough to get on base to steal 15-ish bags.

Pablo Sandoval – 3-for-5, 3 runs, 5 RBIs and his 8th homer, hitting .257.  His uniform number should be 8, because he just did.

Jeff Samardzija – 5 IP, 3 ER, 8 baserunners, 3 Ks, ERA at 6.42, as he was activated from the DL.  Maybe this is a coincidence maybe it’s not, but when Samardzija was activated my Apple Watch “detected a heart rate that rose above 140 while you appeared to be inactive.”

Hosmer looks like crap. 1 for 8 today and he couldn’t even get a hit off of Jeff Mathis who took the loss / had to finish the game for AZ. He hit 25/90 2 years in a row on a bad team in an unfriendly hitters park, not sure why he is so pathetic now. He did get paid. Drop hosmer for either cron or bauers, obp league? Or hold and hope for a 2nd half pulse. He has a track record, but I need some production. Thanks

    • The Great Knoche says:
      (link)

@Scott: Hosmer has no lineup around him for protection. In KC he had Moustasskiss and Cain in front of him with Sal Perez behind him.

So far in San Diego he has had about 30 games of Myers a little Renfroe and a part time Villaneuva. K % is up a ton from 15% to 22%. He’s not putting balls in play. Think you’ll see a turn around in 2nd half with a healthy lineup.

  4. Clay says:

Grey, is it time to drop Pham?

He had that super boring hit streak, and I have at least 6 other OFs I start over him (Kemp, Hicks & Soto are my regular starters, and I sometimes play Peralta/Reddick/Desmond/and now Tucker based on matchups). Maybe you see a strong 2nd half rebound for Pham– do you?

    • Clay says:

@Clay: to clarify, not sure if Pham’s the 6th best on that list, but he’s getting the 6th most starts among those guys

I’m making hard choices, Grey. 10×10 league w/ 10 teams.

    1. Offense (H, 2b, 3b, hr, xbh, runs, rbi, sb, ops, ba). Who are the two weakest links: Shaw, Belt, Upton, Acuna, Avisail, OZUNA? I’m pretty sure Avisail is one of them. I could see a case for any of the others.

    2. Starters (GS, IP, W, QS, K, whip, era). Who are the two weakest links: Flaherty, Quintana, Eovaldi, Marco G, Eflin? Ordinarily I’d drop Eovaldi, but he looks super good right now. I’m leaning “4-poops Quintana” as 1st drop, and if I need to drop a 2nd it would be Marco.

    3. Bullpen (sv, relief wins, relief appearances, K, IP). Who gets cut: Soria, Barraclough, Boxberger, Norris, Romo, Hader. The question might be, who will be traded to a contender to work the 8th inning? I’m leaning Soria or Barraclough.

    Thanks, Grey!

    Great write-up! Enjoyed!

    a. On Bieber, he gave up two 2-run HRs, the second one in the 6th. Then he stayed in and got out of the inning. Not a bad effort, certainly not one that will win u a championship.

    b. Watched the Reds-Cubs game from Friday afternoon here in Croatia and LIVE!! It was a treat. Weirdest thing I saw? Happ had a 0.417 BA against the Reds and only pinch hit for Montgomery!! I thought Maddon’s peeps studied chit, but I guess not. The problem with Happ is actually PT but more importantly he doesn’t have a position to call his own.

    1. LF Hello Schwarber who is having a great season

    2. 2B Hello Baez / Zobrist, and Baez leads the Cubs with 61 RBIs (before the game!)

    3. 3B Bryant who is on the DL…So Hello Tommy LaStella? Damn, even LaStella started over Happ!!!

I guess his problem is defense, haven’t checked but he can’t be a great defender anywhere. Only logical thing I can come up with. Cubs are a great team, I wouldn’t want to botch that up for anything.

    c. Mark Twain quote of the day for July 9

To me, the most important feature of my life is its literary feature. I have been professionally literary something more than forty years. There have been many turning-points in my life, but the one that was the last link in the chain appointed to conduct me to the literary guild is the most CONSPICUOUS link in that chain. BECAUSE it was the last one. It was not any more important than its predecessors. All the other links have an inconspicuous look, except the crossing of the Rubicon; but as factors in making me literary they are all of the one size, the crossing of the Rubicon included.

I know how I came to be literary, and I will tell the steps that lead up to it and brought it about.

The crossing of the Rubicon was not the first one, it was hardly even a recent one; I should have to go back ages before Caesar’s day to find the first one. To save space I will go back only a couple of generations and start with an incident of my boyhood. When I was twelve and a half years old, my father died. It was in the spring. The summer came, and brought with it an epidemic of measles. For a time a child died almost every day. The village was paralyzed with fright, distress, despair. Children that were not smitten with the disease were imprisoned in
their homes to save them from the infection. In the homes there were no cheerful faces, there was no music, there was no singing but of solemn hymns, no voice but of prayer, no romping was allowed, no noise, no laughter, the family moved spectrally about on tiptoe, in a
ghostly hush. I was a prisoner. My soul was steeped in this awful dreariness–and in fear. At some time or other every day and every night a sudden shiver shook me to the marrow, and I said to myself, “There, I’ve got it! and I shall die.” Life on these miserable terms was not
worth living, and at last I made up my mind to get the disease and have it over, one way or the other. I escaped from the house and went to the house of a neighbor where a playmate of mine was very ill with the malady. When the chance offered I crept into his room and got into bed with him. I was discovered by his mother and sent back into captivity. But I had the disease; they could not take that from me. I came near to dying. The whole village was interested, and anxious, and sent for news of me every day; and not only once a day, but several times. Everybody believed I would die; but on the fourteenth day a change came for the worse and they were disappointed.

This was a turning-point of my life. (Link number one.) For when I got well my mother closed my school career and apprenticed me to a printer. She was tired of trying to keep me out of mischief, and the adventure of the measles decided her to put me into more masterful hands than hers.

I became a printer, and began to add one link after another to the chain which was to lead me into the literary profession. A long road, but I could not know that; and as I did not know what its goal was, or even that it had one, I was indifferent. Also contented.

    Cheers,
    Ante

        Thanks, man!

Needed some help on my pitching for the week in my H2H points league where you get 1 pt for every out, 0.5 per K, 3 pts for every QS and 7 for W / Save, lose 1 for every hit and earned run allowed and lose 3 for every loss. Kind of have to win this week and my opponent is starting a lot of 2-start pitchers who may get blown out so a good one start will be better this week.

Start 5 SP (Stripling can start in the RP in place of either closer) and 2 RP.

        1. Rich Hill @SD (Lauer), home versus LAA (Richards)

        2. Corey Kluber at home versus NYY (Severino)

        3. Kenta Maeda @SD (Lucchesi)

        4. Jose Quintana @SF (Cueto)

        5. Ross Stripling @SD (Ross)

        RP

        1. Edwin Diaz RP (6 games for the week @LAA, @COL)

        2. Corey Knebel RP (8 games for the week @MIA, @PIT)

        Bench

        1. Nathan Eovaldi @MIN (Odorizzi)

        2. Jack Flaherty @home versus CIN (DeSclafani)

        3. Sean Manaea @HOU (Verlander), @SF (Suarez)

        4. Miles Mikolas @CHW (Covey)

I’m leaning these starting 5 plus RP. You?

        Cheers,
        Ante

Should I trade Harper for Choo and Jose Martinez? It’s a Yahoo H2H 5×5 cats league and I’m in second but my offense is pretty weak. Trade would give me an OF of Marte/Choo/Springer. Votto is my 1B, so Jo-Ma would be one of my Utils along with Belt. Also have Trumbo in the mix, but I may dump him as he’s cooling off.

    Grey,

I know I asked this on Friday, but circumstances changed AKA Kyle Tucker was called up and was available for pickup. My roster now looks like this in a 12 tm Keeper H2H league with OBP instead of AVG, QS instead of W, SV+H instead of SV. Who would you drop to activate Cain Sugar?

    C – Molina
    1B – Edwin
    2B – Dozier
    SS – Trea Turner
    3B – Rendon
    MI – Gennett
    CI – Desmond
    OF – Trout
    OF – Stanton
    OF – Bellinger
    OF – Acuna
    UTIL – Muncy
    BN – DeJong
    BN – Kyle Tucker
    DL – Cain
    DL – Gary Sanchez
    NA – Sano
    SP – Verlander
    SP – Snell
    RP – Edwin Diaz
    RP – Iglesias
    P – Yates
    P – Familia
    P – Treinen
    P – Quintana
    BN – Newcomb
    BN – Heaney
    BN – Stripling
    DL – Wacha

I’m trying talk to some people about trying to do a 2 for 1 swap where I send a bat and SP for a SP.

    Thanks

    Hey Grey,

I have these two proposals waiting for me, which do you like better?

    Trade 1
    I give Bellinger & Bogaerts
    I get Rizzo & Clevinger

    Trade 2
    I give Bogaerts
    I get Jose Berrios

Are either of those worth making?
Trade analyzer says I lose on both, but it’s more needs based and TA doesn’t seem to like mid-tier throwers.

Grey, hope you had a great weekend.

1.) 10 Team mixed league, long rosters, daily moves:
Drop Sean Newcomb? I’ve tried to sell, but nobody is buying; now it’s too late. Safe to outright drop?

2.) Still holding Higashioka? Cervelli, Barnhart, Gomes, Iannetta available. Higa hasn’t really played.

3.) I owned Puig, Avisail, Heyward across a few different leagues. I assume 2 will be DLed and Heyward will be droppable regardless, so gonna make some roster swaps. Can you rank all these hitters? They vary in which are avail, so a general understanding would be very helpful. (10-12 Team mixed roto, daily pick ups but limited moves, long rosters)

Souza, Healy, Bauers, N Williams, Trumbo, Pederson, Thames

Or maybe some arms? Arano, Herrera, Odorizzi

Tried naming guys Best I could.

Picked up L. Weaver, J. Zimmerman and like I said N. Eovaldi last week. Rest of pitching is Morton, MIkolas, Taillon, And F. Peralta. Right now Im staring at Annibal Sanchez,Zach Wheeler, Stephen Matz , Joey Luchessi on waivers. Also just cyclosping Kingham and Rodon… Pick up Sanchez, Wheeler , Matz or Luchessi and drop anyone? (bench bats are Moncada Ian Desmond, Avisail Garcia on rotation based on match ups) Make moves or Hold?? leaning wait and see. Maybe keep Weaver for White sox game.

    Grey,
This week is gonna be a tough one as it runs from July 9-22. Only 12 starts count any start after the 12 they don’t count towards points. It’s a H2H League.
Which SP would you sit for this week.

    Severino
@CLE – I’m sure he will get a start after the all-star break is over so that will be 2 starts.

    Morton
vs. OAK – I’m sure he will get a start after the all-star break is over so that will be 2 starts.

    Kershaw
@SD, vs. LAA – I’m sure he will get a start after the all-star break is over so that will be 3 starts.

    Sale
vs. TEX – I’m sure he will get a start after the all-star break is over so that will be 2 starts.

    DeGrom
vs. PHIL – I’m sure he will get a start after the all-star break is over so that will be 2 starts.

    Bauer
vs. CIN, @NYY – I’m sure he will get a start after the all-star break is over so that will be 3 starts.

    Corbin
@COL, @ATL – I’m sure he will get a start after the all-star break is over so that will be 3 starts.

    C-Mart
vs. CIN – I’m sure he will get a start after the all-star break is over so that will be 2 starts.

I should sit two of my starters as start number 13 and on will not count towards points. I have Kimbrel and Romo in as my closers right now.

Who do you recommend I sit for SP this week? I should sit two but not sure if I want Romo in as a closer, if that is the case then I only need to sit one starter.

            (link)

I have Kimbrel and Romo in right now as closers. So I need six starters or should I sit Romo and start another pitcher. I see who they play, so I figured Romo might get some points. Right now I have Corbin and C-Mart on the bench.

    Grey,

    Great write up!

    1. 12 team 5×5 roto OBP keeper league. I’m in 3rd and trying to contend this year while also thinking for the future. I have 20 moves remaining. With Puig likely to the DL which player would you pick up from the list below? The players with a “w” are on waivers. All players below are $5 for this year, keepable next year at $10 and then $13 the following year except Bell ($10, $13, x) and Gray ($8, $12, $15)

    Bauers (w), Cron, Calhoun, J. Pederson, A. Meadows (w), J. Bell, Camargo, A Hanson
    J. Gray, Wheeler, Enyel (likely optioned to AAA after spot start?)

    2. After picking up one of the above, would you drop any of these players to pick up additional players from that pool? I’m interested in Calhoun and feel he will be added by a competitor soon if I don’t get him. End of roster guys: Odor ($9, $13, $16), A. Eaton ($13, $16, $20), M. Taylor ($4, $9, $13) E. Escobar ($5, $10, $13), Kingham($5, $10, $13), Bieber($5, $10, $13), Yates($5, $10, $13), Jimenez($5, $10, $13)

    3. Two teams in front of me just traded keepers for studs this year. One got Trout, the other Kluber. Would you offer Seranthony Dominguez ($5, $10, $13) and either mikolas ($1, $6, $9) or Folty ($5, $10, $13) for Goldy (not keepable)?

Sorry for the long post. Always appreciate the advice. Happy Monday!

    • Grey

@Grey: If I made that deal, I’d be left with Verlander, Pivetta, Bieber, Kingham, Doolittle, Yates, Jimenez and and 2 empty pitching slots. Can I compete with that group you think? Pitchers available are questionable at best. Jon Gray, Wheeler, Cahill, Montas, Barria, Minor, Matz, Ryu, Sonny Gray… maybe use spots to speculate on closers? Trivino, Addison Reed, Hicks… Tough to play match ups when you have so few moves remaining. How would you approach rebuilding pitching side after a trade like that?

1 Traded Cain/Cody Allen/Newcomb over the weekend cause im tops in steals and saves… netted Bauer and Syndergaard to gain ground in Ks – the TA liked it. Hope you do too

    As for the team:
    c Perez
    1b Freeman
2b Schoop (seems like he’s heating up)
    3b Devers
    ss Lindor
    mi Bregman
    ci Olson
    of – Stanton/Marte/Acuna/Soto/Reddick/Tucker
Puig (certainly gonna go on DL)
    Bench – Cesar Hernandez/Schebler

2 – Drop any of them for Healy?

    Pitching
SP – C-Mart, Snell, Bauer. Eovaldi, Syndergaard, Wood, Darvish
RP – Rodney, Kela, Rondon, Jimenez, Clippard, Hader

3 – Drop any for Zimmerman or Odorizzi?
4 – I believe you’re on record saying you dont believe Darvish is worth keeping, correct?
5 – Im in 4th place in 10 team 5×5, in contention in all cats – tops in steals/saves/runs – any general thoughts on my team?

What’s good Grey? Currently starting Realmuto at catcher and have Sanchez on the DL in my 12-team, 6×6, keeper league. Got an offer over the weekend of J.A.Happ and a 3rd round pick in next years draft (which is pretty valuable in our league) for Sanchez. The A’s, dude. 2 out of 3 in Cleveland. 11 games over .500. They’re actually talking contract extension with Jed Lowrie. Their pen has been super good. They’re going to burn those guys out. As much as I would hate to see him go, they should try to get a good return on Treinen. It’s possible they could make a run at the wild card, but even if they should get there, they’re throwing Manaea or Brett Anderson or Edwin Jackson against Sale/Severino. The A’s are about 2 years away when Luzardo arrives and Puk is all the way back from TJ. Treinen will be burnt by then. He’s been a top 5 reliever this year. They could get some nice pieces. They’re on pace to mess up the record for most HRs hit on the road. The line up doesn’t really have any big holes. They’re even getting good ABs from Lucroy.

Oaktown Kids update. Wil Myers and the offense went crazy on Saturday and Sunday. As a team 28 R, 27 RBI, 9 HR, 8 SB and about .370 in two days. Lead up to 18.5.

Haven’t been able to make up any ground on the NFBC side though I did have a good week on offense especially. The way the standings are, I feel like I could add 15 points with a really good month. I’m at the bottom of a bunched pack in about 3 categories. I don’t think I’m going to have the pitching to stay in it.

Favorite thing said in baseball over the weekend: AJ Hinch on adding Kevin Cash to his all star staff, “I needed a guy who’s used to having 9 different pitchers pitch in 9 different innings.”

It was really funny week. 4th of July there were about 15 runs scored in 15 games. Then there was the weekend.

When a guy gets put on the all star team and you have a share of him in fantasy do you get an idiotic little thrill of excitement? Does it bum you out when guys on your teams are shitty in the game itself? Why is it that my fondest memories of the all star game growing up as a kid are of watching them stand on the baselines and getting announced. And from the Texas Rangers, pitcher Jim Kern! *step forward, tip cap, step back*

A fact learned this weekend. I think I must have known this at some point. The only day in MLB featuring 2 no hitters the authors were Dave Stewart and Fernando Valenzuela.

I could see Tucker having a Hoskinsfromlastyear-esque run here. I think we’ll be talking about a difference maker for those who got him.

our league: My pitching’s wheels came off… Starting Tyson Ross every week is killing me

All Star Game: Doesn’t affect me at all, tbh… Prefer none of my guys played so no injuries and get to rest

Took a deep look into Muncy and I made a bet with a friend that he will have a 30% plus K rate going forward and be a bench player by August. Here’s the argument: His swing rate is ridiculously low (3rd lowest in league) and zone swing rate is 10th lowest. He doesn’t make contact at elite rates. His plate discipline comp is really Russell Martin (Matt Carpenter too). Then you look at his heat maps. Cuz of his crouch, high strikes are not getting called on him. Like only 45% of high strikes are getting called vs 60-70s norm. And Muncy is TERRIBLE with high strikes. His ISO on them is ice ice cold. Umps and pitchers will adapt and it’s already happening. He has struck out twice in each of last four games. SELL, especially with Machado likely coming to Dodgers.

    Grey,

6×5, 10 team, h2h, including ops I have a few players on the dl and wondering who to keep, and who to dump in favor of either Thames or Yuli Gurriel. Which of the two would you add, and who would you send packing, Braun or Puig?

I currently have Braun and Wacha in my dl spots, and now that Puig is likely headed for the dl I don’t know which of the two to keep and who to dump. I can’t imagine you’d want to hold on to all three and have a dead roster space, so which of the three is the odd man out?

    Here is my team.

    C – Yadier Molina
    1B – Goldy, Abreu
    2B – Albies, Peraza
    3B – Arenado
    SS – Bregman
OF – Trout, Judge, Pollock, Hicks, Inciarte
SP – Scherzer, Morton, Keuchel, Price, Archer, Weaver, Heaney, German
    RP – Kela, Barraclough, Rondon
    DL – Braun, Puig, Wacha

    Good afternoon, Grey!

So todays’ fresh new hell is Gallo sitting against Ed-Rod in Boston. Gallo’s numbers against him? 2 for 3, both hits HRs. They supposedly want to go righty heavy against the lefty. Umm… All Gallo does is hit HRs. Do you really want to sit him on a day when the data says he might actually do that? Ugh. I wish the baseball gods would save us from overmanaging.

He’s probably doing it just to raise and then dash my hopes, but Schoop has a 7-game hit streak going. Five of those games have been multi-hit, he has five doubles and 2 homers in that span…

in my Yahoo 12 team points league i was offered Price for my chris taylor , my rotation looks like this.
    Archer
    Pivetta
    Arrieta
    G. Cole
    Manaea
    Stroman
    Gibson
    S. Miller
    Dereck Rodriguez

if i make this trade i have no SS but Semien, Ketel Marte, Russell are FAs so i can pick one up after, question is should i even pull the trigger on this trade. it kinda feels like a blah trade but i feel like my rotation needs some love. My team is in 3rd and my lineup is pretty good so im not too worried about losing Taylors bat.

Start Jeremy Hellickson in a 2 start week (home against Reds and Mets)? He was awful in his last start, but was supposedly sick.

The alternatives are Shane Bieber (home v NYY), Joey Lucchesi (home v LAD), or Jared Hughes (as a ratio protector)

    • LenFuego says:
      (link)

@LenFuego: 12 team 5×5 weekly roto, BTW. I am in 1st place, competitive in all categories.

Is there a term for when a player goes to Coors but then faces lefties 2/3 times and can’t hit lefties so will get benched or go 0/6 with 5Ks?

Got excited when I realized lamb was going to Coors until I saw Freeland and Anderson on the mound.

    Grey,

Excellent stuff as usual. Makes very work morning that much brighter. Thank you for that.

Dozier or Merrifield ROS ? Close ? Needs dependent ? Or you can replace Merrifield’s SB by streaming appropriately ? 5×5 roto, can keep 5 for next season, neither likely to be keepers.

    Best wishes,

Great Hader. Go ahead and let light hitting Nancy boys Starlin Castro and Brian Anderson go back to back on you. How is it the Marlins have been killing my pitchers this year? Didn’t help that the umpire made called the pitch that should’ve struck Castro out a ball.

Anyone have a term for a league mate who, respectfully, is out of the playoffs before all star break in a head to head league and decides to play this week because they know the opponent and pick up Danny Fing Duffy and he decides to pitch a shutout into the 6th?! BS? Discovering Plutonium by accident? That’s baseball? K rage done…. Thanks for the talk haha

    Here’s trade

    Freddie Freeman-Jacob Degrom

    For
    (My)
    Trea Turner- Luis Severino

I also can add (my) Yuli Gurriel for Barranclough, or (my) Votto for Doolittle.

Kinda need saves, but meh. I’m also pretty deep at CI, So trading one wouldn’t hurt.

So I’ve been offered Bryant/Roark/Gardner for Beltre/Snell/S. Marte. I’m pretty much out of it this year, and this means I’d keep Bryant instead of Rendon as one of my 4 hitting keepers. No impact on pitching keepers, as I’ve already got Kluber and Severino as my 2. The trade analyzer has me losing in a landslide, but it seems to over value Marte in my opinion, at least for what he’s done this year. Thoughts on this deal, even if it’s just as the starting point of a negotiation to get Bryant?

    • Milarky says:
      (link)

@Milarky: Looking again, Marte is actually doing better than I thought….
