Javier Vazquez went seven innings, giving up 2 ER with 7 baserunners and recording 7 Ks as he lowered his ERA to 8.10.  Though, he could’ve gave up 6 runs in 7 innings and would’ve lowered his ERA.  Do I think Javy released his inner leprechaun and found the pot on the other side of his crappy pitching?  Yes and no.  There was no way Vazquez was going to pitch a 9.78 ERA all year.  I mean, c’mon, that was obscene.  He had given up more runs than innings.  He was getting Pwnson’d every time out.  The rest of the way he should be around a 4 to 4.50 ERA guy.  There’s room to own that, but don’t expect last year this year, clear?  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Phil Hughes – 7 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks and now has a 1.38 ERA on the year.  I really wanted to own Hughes this year.  Alas, it didn’t happen.  Alas II, I did draft Joba.  Alas III, I dropped Joba before he got any saves.  Alas IV, there’s no Alas IV.  Dur.

Nick Swisher – Day-to-day after leaving the 2nd game of the doubleheader with bicep tightness, which reminds me of my hit single I had in Japan, “A Bicep Is Two-Thirds A Tricep (Check My Anatomy).”

Rick Porcello – 7 IP, 0 ER, 7 baserunners, 2 Ks.  Even a broken clock is right a few times a season.

Shaun Marcum – 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 6 Ks and now has a 2.78 ERA on the year.  With Alex Gonzalez (10 HRs), Vernon Wells (9 HRs), John Buck (8 HRs), Brett Cecil ( 3.12 ERA), Ricky Romero (3.42 ERA, 47 Ks in 47 1/3 IP), Kevin Gregg (10 Saves, 2.12 ERA) and Shaun Marcum, I probably should’ve just autodrafted all my fantasy teams and just grabbed every unowned Blue Jay off waivers.  Yeah, I could’ve cured the common cold instead of all that preseason prep work I did, but whatever.  I’m now going to walk into oncoming traffic.

Travis Snider – 2-for-4, 3 RBIs with his 5th homer and batting .320 in the last week.  You see that fifth outfielder schmohawk on your team?  Yeah, he should be dropped for Snider.  Plus, he looks like a Muppet.  or no sí?

Aaron Hill – Didn’t play due to a tight right hamstring.  This is the same hamstring that forced him to the DL in April.  He’s definitely not *pinkie to mouth* hamstrong.

Hiroki Kuroda – 7 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 9 Ks and now has a 2.66 ERA on the year.  Probably one of the most underrated starters in all of baseball.

Carl Pavano – 7 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 4 Ks.  If I were only a fantasy baseball cougar and owned some of these old, reliable pitchers… Boy the way Kevin Millar played… Bombs that made the hit parade… Fantasy baseballers like us we had it made… Those were the days….

Juan Pierre – 2-for-4 as he stole his 16th and 17th base.  He could steal 60.  Wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Homer Bailey – 9 IP, 0 ER, 4 baserunners, 6 Ks.  Before the All-Star Game, instead of the Futures Game, they should have the Worst Pitcher In The Majors vs. the Pirates Game.  Like you wouldn’t watch it.

Jason Heyward – 1-for-3, 3 Runs, 1 RBI, batting third and 2 steals in the last two games.  So my question to you guys and three girls is, where does Heyward get drafted next year?  Third round?  Fourth?

Trevor Hoffman – 1 IP, 3 ER.  Kazaam!

Tyler Clippard – Won his 7th game.  Greinke still doesn’t have a Win.  Cust kayin’.

Roger Bernadina – 2 homers from a guy that isn’t anything more than a flier in deep NL-Only leagues for steals.  The over/under is 2 for rest of the season homers from Roger, roger?

Mike Pelfrey – 5 2/3 IP, 4 ER, 10 baserunners, 6 Ks.  Last week, shoulder tightness.  This week, the Mets throw him for 119 pitches.  Oh-kay.

Derek Holland – 6 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks.  He has another solid start his next time out vs. the Angels.  Then it’ll be a play it by ear scenario, something Van Gogh wasn’t so good at.

Josh Hamilton – 3-for-5 and his 7th homer.  Member when you were pissed you drafted him?  Oh, you!

Justin Smoak – Hit his fourth homer while batting .194, but he still has more walks than strikeouts.  Yes, he’s been unlucky.  Yes, he’ll be better.

Nolan Reimold – Sent back to Triple-A.  Corey Patterson was recalled.  Well, that’ll fix the O’s problems.  Anyone wanna take a bet on who will finish with more wins, the O’s or Tyler Clippard?

Alfredo Simon – 4th Save, still has a 0.00 ERA.  It looks innocuous enough, but it’s performances like Simon’s that stick in your head when you pick up the random backup closer that then destroys your ERA and WHIP.  Thanks, Simon.  For nothing!  *small voice* And for the four saves.  I do actually appreciate that.  Kisses!

Adam Jones – 3-for-4.  I prayed for a 34-for-37 day, but I’ll take it.

Russell Branyan – 2-for-4 with his third homer in two days.  I grabbed him in two leagues.  You?

Jered Weaver – 7 IP, 1 ER, 8 baserunners, 12 Ks.  He’s been throwing his curveball a lot more this year and it’s causing hitters to swing outside the zone almost 7% more this year than last.  So far it has meant a bump of his K-rate from 7.42 last year to 10.41.  Call The Advocate, this could be his coming out party.

Mark Reynolds – Apropos of nothing, Vin Scully was talking about Joe DiMaggio only striking out 39 times in a season and he said, “Mark Reynolds strikes out that many times in batting practice.”  Oh, Scully, you make Ford C. Frick frickin’ proud.

Eric Young Jr. – Filled in when Melvin Mora left with tightness in his glutes.  Not sure how my neighbor does it but she has very tight glutes.

Miguel Olivo – 5-for-5 with a home run.  In other news, Chris Iannetta cried.

Carlos Ruiz – Left the game with a knee injury.  He’s day-to-day.  Or Day II Day, if he were starting an R&B group.

Brad Lidge – Sent back for tests on his elbow.  The club is downplaying the severity of this.  For a team, stealing signs, you’d think they’d be able to recognize a bad sign.  Contreras is the pickup, but Baez could squirm his way into the picture.

Wandy Rodriguez – 6 IP, 4 ER, 7 baserunners, 3 Ks.  Hate to be a Wandy apologist, but he had a one-hitter through five then it all fell apart.

Gordon Beckham – 1-for-3 with no Runs, no Steals, no RBIs.  He’s really taking to the 8 hole!  BTW, I just realized his lineup replacement at the top of the order was A.J. Pierzynski of a .196 average.  Guess when you take crap out of the two hole you gotta put crap back in.  It’s called the law of diminishing returds.

  1. GastelessTarbage says:

    Medlen, Olsen, Holland – agree with order?

  2. Terrence Mann says:

    Last time you used that Advocate joke, I spent 20 minutes searching google to find out if Jay Bruce was gay. Not doing it this time. Weaver may look like he’s gay but I’m pretty sure he’s not. Though, I’m pretty sure there’s a photo of him playing softball floating around somewhere.

  3. 3matt says:

    It’s (past) time to give up on Borbon, right? Looking at dropping him for Snider or Smoak in the two leagues I’ve stubbornly held on…

  4. Bring Back Pluto says:

    @3matt: Do it.

  5. Commish Cauda (formerly Mike) says:

    Putting aside positional need, and with a primary focus on this season, who would you rather have in deep H2H-POINTS Keeper League? J. Chacin or Starlin Castro?

  6. BSA says:

    PSA –

    voting link to the right of your comments – Vote Synergy, Vote Daily, Tell your friends!

    p0rk’s comments to his crew cracked me up – thanks for the support!

    Grey caught Pablo promoting the site.

    New hide and seek game at the synergy refresh site starting this afternoon.

    PS: Other groups are voting for us and asking how to find the razzball project so they can vote for razzball. cust kayin’!

    PS: Real Tom put it the best when he said “VAGNOF”.
    VAGNOF will get us to the top!!!

  7. Tony says:

    @BSA: VAGNOF? hmmmm…. i know what i’m thinking the “V” stands for….

    Is snider worth my #1 waiver priority? I picked him up when he was getting hot vs. CLE in my RCL but he’s on waivers til friday i think in my yahoo league. I dont know who i’d drop. Ryan sweeney was an add/fill in for one day for today, probably him, yes him…. drop sweeney for snider, i’m pretty sure i need to burn the priority, or do i just wait and see if he clears?

  8. steamer says:

    Don’t forget Jose Bautista Grey (20R, 7HR, 23 RBI). So glad I dropped Snider after his 1st month of crap. Oh, and the rest of my outfield is J. Upton, A. Jones, C. Lee, Quentin. Good times.

  9. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Tony: i’d probably burn it. at this point the chances of a game changer ending up on waivers are pretty slim. snider has more potential than anyone else you’ll use the waiver on.

  10. ThePoonTycoon says:

    daily lineup league, i have 8 SPs i rotate. my top 4 are beckett, haren, kershaw, and slowey. my back 4 either drafted as fliers or grabbed off the ww early are wilson, lewis, kennedy, and garcia.

    outside of haren’s Ks, the back 4 guys are pretty much universally statistically superior to the top 4. baseball’s a funny game.

  11. ThePoonTycoon says:

    “So my question to you guys and three girls is, where does Heyward get drafted next year? Third round? Fourth?”

    if he maintains anything reasonably near his current pace, 2nd round.

  12. steamer says:

    Guys, I’m looking at making a play for Sizemore. I’m looking a packaging an OF + a SP.

    My OF consists of J. Upton, Ad Jones, Quentin, Krispie, Rasmus. My SPs are J. Johnson, Kershaw, Price, Liriano, Marcum, Santana, Garcia, Bills.

    What kind of a package do you think I could offer? I’d pretty much move any OF besides Upton & I’d prefer to move Santana, Garcia or Bills.

    As much as I love Rasmus this year, I’m getting tired of him getting benched every 4th game. What about him + a SP?

  13. steamer says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: You mentioned Slowey is in your top 4. Someone just dropped him in my league, you think he’s still a #4 type fantasy starter?

  14. Tony says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: i’d say RIGHT now Heyward is a 4-5th rounder, but YES if he finishes like he’s started he’s a 2nd to 3rd rounder for sure…. i dont believe he hits like this all yr.

  15. dsimon says:

    @BSA: It really is that easy. Just vote people.

  16. Brandon says:

    What should I do with Carlos Quentin? He is just not good at baseball.

  17. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @steamer: i obviously meant where i drafted the guys and expected them to slot into my staff and the perception to start the season.

  18. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Tony: strangely enough, i kinda do. i think he is gonna gradually get his BB::K rate back to where it was coming up through the minors. i’ve been regretting not taking him in my keeper league all season. the avg will fluctuate some, but i think you are looking at around .285-30-100-10 numbers. as a 20 year old. in may he has 7 BB and 1 K. looks like a guy that is putting 2 and 2 together to me.

  19. Tony says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: ya i’ll have to look at some things…. basically all prospects are owned, pedro alvarez, strasburg, smoak (me), etc etc etc…. might be a few SP’s coming up if injuries happen or whatnot but like u said i doubt anything is on the horizon that could be an immediate help like snider could pan out to be…..

  20. Mojo the Helper Monkey says:

    Which side do you like: a) Hughes and Weeks or Johnson, or b) Hamilton?

  21. Tony says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: YA, true…. i almost accepted king felix for my votto, then declined a day or two later the guy deals king felix for HEYWARD, and another guy told me by yrs end he thinks votto’s and heywards #’s will be similar…. IDK, hard for me to grasp that, its a long season…. lots of guys go buck wild then just hit a wall….. its inconceivable while they’re hot then it just happens.

  22. @Commish Cauda (formerly Mike): If Chaucin pitches well tonight at home against the resurgent Nationals (that felt funny to write: “resurgent Nationals.” Heh), I’d go for him over Castro.

  23. Beau says:

    Silly to drop robot/quentin for pierre, snider, or both?

  24. Beau says:

    Could drop podsednick too…

  25. steamer says:

    @steamer: sorry, ready your post wrong. I hear you though. I drafted Kershaw & Billingsley as my # 2/3 SPs & picked up Garcia of WW & drafted Liriano, Price, Marcum later. Before the year I looked at last years pre-draft rankings of top 20 starters & it seems like half of them were busts. Guess that’s why Grey preaches grabbing hitters early.

  26. Grey — In a 14-team league with unusually rich waiver options for pitching do any of these guys strike you are being more than matchup fodder? The available ones are: Harang, Buchholz, Kennedy, Masterson, Gorzelanny, Cecil, Braden, Marcum, and Latos.

    Also, out of the first five — Harang to Gorzelanny — who do you like best for a spot start tomorrow? Should I pick the one (Gorzelanny) facing the hapless Pirates?

  27. steamer says:

    my last post was directed at Poon

  28. Buddo Chezuski says:

    At Catcher, I dropped Russell the Muscle for Pudge. Weekly league, won’t take effect until Monday. Kind of regretting this already. Was this a mistake? I was just sick and tired of Martin’s lack of XBHs

  29. William says:

    @Grey – Nice use of “cougar” with Carl Pavano

  30. Tony says:

    @Mojo the Helper Monkey: in that case if you need a 2B? i’d take KJ and Hughes….. I own hammy, but pos eligibility and a solid SP? I like that. Weeks is great, UNTIL he gets hurt, which he will.

  31. Kid says:

    Rank the following outfielders:

    Ibanez, Chris Young, Fukodome, Bautista, Damon

  32. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @steamer: yeah, the first month i do a lot of SP adding/dropping until i find the right guys. now i don’t drop guys like beckett, but before last night i was thisclose to dropping vazquez in a league. but the back end guys i absolutely swap around to find the right mix. personally, i don’t think slowey’s start is that awful. not drop worthy unless you’ve really put together a killer staff and HAVE to use his roster spot elsewhere. we’d all love it to be better, but if he put a month together in august like he’s had his last 4 or so starts, then you wouldn’t even blink. guys have months where their era is in the 4.00+ range every year and win cy youngs and era titles. if come mid-june his era is still climbing or sitting in the 4.60 range like now, i might have to waive him if something is out there, but it’s still mid-may.

  33. Jarrad says:

    Time to hit the eject button on Kubel? His timeshare with Thome and complete lack of skills is starting to wear on my already sputtering offense, which could use a bump up in 2B, 3B, R, & SB-CS.

    Best available options are Delmon Young, Pagan, Boesch, and Schierholtz.

    Here’s my roster…

    C: Soto
    1B: AGonz
    2B: Cano
    3B: A-Rod
    SS: Desmond
    MI: Kel-Jo
    CI: Panda
    LF: Dunn, El Caballo
    CF: Rasmus, Ross
    RF: Fukudome, Kubel
    U: Alcides, Votto
    Bench: Beckham

  34. mc serch says:

    Don’t know where it came from, from the “All In The Family” riff was bad…not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good (nod to Uncle L)! Nice to see some RazzProps for Kuroda. I traded a crappy closer for him early on, have high hopes.

  35. Jarrad says:

    @Jarrad: …oh, and Ells is in my DL slot.

  36. GopherDay says:

    Verlander or Lester?

  37. Many of us took a flier on Swisher who has maintained productivity almost as smoking hot as his wife. But now with a lingering aggravated bicep issue, the correction might likely be forthcoming sooner than later. Tough to drop someone that ordinarily occupies a prime spot in that lineup and Gamba, but would you consider any of Smoak, Snider, McClouth, Fowler, Glaus, Maybin, or Branyan and thank Nick for a nice run?

  38. Mojo the Helper Monkey says:

    @Tony: So you’d be more inclined to do the Weeks/Hughes for Hamilton? Do you think I should be looking for more?

  39. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @zombie: i’d look at smoak, snider, or glaus, then branyan, then maybin, fowler, mcclouth. depends on needs. glaus probably does provide you with 3B eligibility which is nice given the shallowness of the position…but he’s also old and has a lot of injuries in his past. smoak and snider will be stars sooner than later, both suffered (smoak still suffering) from an awful babip, but give it time.

  40. Quimmy says:

    15 Team League, 5 man sp rotation

    My staff: jiminez, gallardo, marcum, Garcia, zito
    Bench: Anderson, bra den and correia

    I am in last in steals and ba, was offered the following:

  41. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Quimmy: get more for gallardo. furcal gets hurt, and pence isn’t gonna significantly save you in either SBs or avg (something like .280 with .15 SBs isn’t salvaging the cats).

  42. Tony says:

    @Mojo the Helper Monkey: you might be able to get more, i’d probably want KJ and Hughes, weeks is ALWAYS an injury risk. Overall i’d probably just keep hammy, ha. What are you starting at 2B now?

  43. Jarrad says:

    @Quimmy: Yeah, definitely get more for Gallardo. I agree with The Poon… :P

  44. Returds indeed, sir. Returds indeed.

    Who is Roger Bernadina and do I need to care about him?

    Special Note To Anyone Who’s Ever Taken My Advice: Being dead-last in steals, I picked up Pierre a week ago after his 5-SB in 3 games binge. He promptly went 1-10 including a delightful 0-fer-6 game. Given I have a bunch of kind-of useful but not all that useful OFs already (Sizemore, Bruce, Lind, Krispie) I dropped Pierre to grab Putz.

    When you are dead last in steals, does it make sense to drop the major-league leader in steals?

    No, no it does not.

    Nonetheless, Jenks gets a save, Pierre goes 9 for his next 19, gets picked up on waivers, and I stare at Putz and weep. Now I am trying to TRADE for BRETT GARDNER.

    As Bill the Cat would say: “Gack.”

  45. Tony says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: lol i’m dead last in steals as well, and my roster has Ellsbury and Rollins…. so hopefully i’m climbing in that cat SOON….

  46. Rico says:

    Would you drop Slowey and/or Masterson for Vazquez, Randy Wells, etc?

    Slowey scares me: no ground balls, good but no longer elite control, xFIP of 4.6… just not sure he has much potential. Vazquez’s 2009 was legit, and this year his control has been off. His control has always been excellent at 2.5BB/9. I think he’s a 4.2ERA, K/ip guy that will rack up wins with that run support.

  47. Frank Rizzo says:

    I wouldn’t count on your Yankees or Tigers today. It has been raining here in MI all night and hasn’t slowed down this morning. I’d be surprised if they even try to play. It’s supposed to thunderstorm all day.

  48. This is my roster in my crazy deep 20-team league:

    C: Napoli
    1B: Miguel Cabrera, Troy Glaus
    2B, OF: Eric Young
    1B, 2B, 3B: Wigginton, Jose Lopez
    2B, SS: Aviles
    OF: Carlos Lee, Rasmus, Brett Gardner, Fred Lewis
    SP: Cole Hamels, Jared Weaver, Mat Latos, Chaucin, Ely, Chapman (NA)
    RP: Fuentes, Takahashi, Gregg
    DL: Brian Roberts, Jimmy Rollins

    I’m in the bottom third in R, HR, and WHIP; in the middle of the pack in RBI, SB, AVE, OPS, and ERA; and near the top in K and SV. I’m around 20 innings behind pace. Overall, 9th out of 20 but 5th to 11th are in a tight pack.

    Anyone have any advice about the kind of moves I can look to make? The league seems a little trade shy, but I was thinking of packaging Wiggy and a young pitcher or, once Rollins is back, Aviles with a pitcher but I’m not sure what to shoot for.

    Any and all help is welcome … this is my first time in a league this deep and it’s a bit overwhelming.

  49. floridamach1 says:

    @Grey @anyone: What kind of return do you think I could get on Ubaldo? Love the guy but 3 starts already over 120 pitches and I’m thinking Jim Tracy can’t see what August looks like

  50. floridamach1 says:

    That is, I have him and might be willing to deal him

  51. Bodymore says:

    @Grey Great title for the blog post. Jewish Fantasy Baseball Humor…nice.

    Well timed after your post on unlucky pitchers was Gavin Floyd’s ejection in my league. I have the #2 claim, and am thinking its worth a shot. Am I right? And if I am, drop Leblanc or Brett Myers? Should get the 2nd start this week out of Myers before it goes through, but Leblanc was a little poop like last time out.

  52. TheEvilEmpire says:

    @Tony: Keep an eye on Florida bringing up Michael Stanton. High K rate but very high upside.

  53. mauledbypandas says:

    say it with me now everyone, Chacin cha cin. the u is a lie.

  54. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @mauledbypandas: seriously, i spent 2 days searching for this “chaucin” character wondering why everyone seemed to own him and there wasn’t even a “chaucin” in the cbs player search.

  55. Wilsonian says:

    It’s gonna be a big one. Here’s my roster in a 16 Team H2H, 5 Keeper league (7×7 with H, OPS, L, K/9):

    C: Soto
    1B: Smoak, Ikey, Glaus
    1B/OF: Dunn
    2B: KJohnson
    3B: Cantu
    3B/OF: Headley
    SS: Alexei
    OF: Hamilton
    OF: Hunter

    SP: Haren, JJohnson, Carpenter, Lester, Chacin, Lewis, LeBlanc, ESantana
    RP: FrankCord, Clippard, Joba

    Overall, I like my team. But I feel like I need to make a change (partially because I own 27 1Bs). Can anyone see anyone that I need to/should drop for any of the following:

    Prado, OCabrera, Aviles, Schierholtz, Stanton, CSantana, Holland, Latos, Medlen?

    I like my team for the most part, I just feel like it’s missing something. I may just be picking at scabs here. Sorry for the long post, but I would love some input from the knowledgeable Razzball nation. Thanks gentlemen.

  56. Wilsonian says:

    Oh, and for those of you in daily leagues and can pick someone up and play them today…Corey Patterson is in and batting leadoff. Just in case anyone likes a little personal torture.

  57. royce! says:

    The law of diminishing returds is brilliant. It doesn’t make me feel any better about drafting Beckham, but not much could.

  58. Quimmy says:

    @[email protected]: mucho grassyass

    @jarrad: why don’t you see if pence is avail on the cheap :)

  59. Real Tom says:

    Grey, should I offer Headley for Carlos Quentin? I need HR and RBI, and I figure his 185 BABIP will go up.

  60. royce! says:

    @royce!: I just discovered that my waiver claim of Beckham for Beckett went through! Thank goodness I drafted Beckham! And thank goodness I play fantasy baseball with people lacking patience!

  61. Jarrad says:

    @Quimmy: Great idea, Quim…except I’m pretty sure the dude that owns him would want a guy like Cordero, and there’s NO WAY I would do that…

  62. Howie Met Your Mother says:

    Latos @SF
    Verlander NYY
    F. Hernandez @Bal
    Bucholtz @DET
    Garland LAD
    Lester @DET
    Leak @STL

    I need to get abou 35 innings between these guys before Sunday. Who am I sitting?

  63. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Howie Met Your Mother: leake and garland

    lester, fher, and verlander are must starts regardless of matchup, buchholz and latos are just more talented than garland who i refuse to trust.

  64. dingers says:

    which side?
    grady/bills or kershaw/baker
    Thanks for any input

  65. Slam says:

    I am going to drop borbon at the end of the week for snider, but only if borbon steals fewer than 3 bases before then. But somehow I’m afraid I’ll regret it. Just traded Lester and valverde for utley. Staff is deep but Lester was my ace and valverde was my best closer aside from bell. My infield is now votto, A rod, Ian Stewart, Zimmerman, asdrubal and utley. 12 team mixed league 7×6 slugging bb’s and qs. I think the trade was good but I may need to trade for pitching soon.

  66. genghis chone says:

    Who to drop for Jhoulys Chacin’s start today? Alfredo Simon, Matt Thornton, Jose Contreras, Gordon Beckham, Kevin Slowey, Wandy Rodriguez? Travis Snider is also available.

  67. Jarrad says:

    @Jarrad: Well, Pagan was just picked up. (Damn you, Mack!)

  68. Beau says:

    Thinking ahead to when Ells comes back…make sense to drop podsednick? I also want to add snider…drop robot? I can drop contreras but id like to hold a sagnof roster spot for vulture saves.

  69. Wilsonian says:

    @genghis chone: depending on your league size and if they count holds, I would drop Thornton for Chacin. For Snider, it would again depend on your league, and what you had at 2B/3B and what your OF looked like, but I would consider dropping Beckham for Snider now. Beckham has looked nothing short of pathetic, in my opinion and I don’t know how much longer I’d want to deal with that, in any league.

  70. Frank Rizzo says:

    What are opinions on Roy Oswalt? I own him and have loved his production so far but read the blurb about how the new manager has used him hard his last 3 starts, and Roy has gone over 115 pitches in those outings. Is he a hold or is this the time to sell? I’m considering offering him straight up for ManRam, hoping to add some RBI’s to my underperforming offense. Get ManRam for Oswalt?

  71. bobbo says:

    I know it’s advised to never sit your elite pitchers, but does King Felix look hurt to anyone else? Should I trust him against the O’s? My patience is waining.

  72. dj says:

    drop edwin jackson for ian kennedy?

  73. Mr. Rickey says:

    How would you rank these for saves potential: Villanueva, Hanrahan, Betancourt, Coffey

  74. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @dj: should have done that 4 weeks ago

  75. ThePoonTycoon says:

    which one of these SP batches would you rather have in a weekly lineup, max 5 SPs per week:

    option 1:
    cj wilson
    randy wells
    e santana

    option 2:
    c lee

  77. dingers says:

    cut Pelfrey loose for Cecil or Holland?

  78. casey jones mcgehee says:

    stuck with both pacman jones and bench him like beckham on my roster…travis snider just sitting as a free agent and i want to pick him up…drop either of these guys for him?

  79. dsimon says:

    Grey, you took a stab at a question I’d posted in the trade forum last night. I added a clarification and I was wondering if you (or really, anyone else) wouldn’t mind taking a look.

    Thanks in advance

  80. Think Jonathan Sanchez will right ship this afternoon hosting the Padres?

    Matt Cain’s outing last night was brutal to watch. 3 IBB on top of the 3 BB and 6 timely hits? Ouch.

  81. EL BURRO says:

    @grey / razz junkies — First of all, not surprised by Holland’s start vs. A’s – they’re fuggn awful; and the more I think about it – the more Im thinking he could be THE, or at least Top 3, impact pitcher call-ups this year. I grabbed him in every 12-14 team league Im in last week and will spot start accordingly…strong BUY for Holland.

    Secondly, Im prospecting a bit for my last UTIL spot in my 14 team mixed, 30 man roster, H2H, non-keeper league. Currently rostering:

    Cameron Maybin
    Mike Stanton

    Would you stay put with either of those 2 or pick up any of these available FA (with anticipation of contributing the most in 2010):

    Jeremy Hermida
    Hank Blalock
    Kila Ka’aihue
    Chris Davis
    Brett Wallace*
    Pedro Alvarez

    *The one guy being over-looked (a little) by the general fantasy population and the one Im most curious about is Wallace. He seems to have a pretty clear path to the BIGS and hes been raking AAA for Vegas. 26 runs, 10 jacks, 30 rbis and batting .311 thru 34 games with an .998 OPS% and .621 SLG%. The better news is that hes handling leftys this year, granted its a small sample size — but hes hitting to the tune of .410 with 40 ABs vs. leftys. That projects pretty nicely into the Jays line-up. I cant imagine that Overbay is long for the club, so just want to get everyone’s thoughts on his development, ETA / call up and projections?

    My league is competitive and deep- no bats on the wire -so guys like Stanton, Santana, Jennings, Ike Davis, Smoak are already owned..

    Sorry for long post and look forward to the comments…

  82. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @EL BURRO: yeah, i’m a believer in rangers SPs this year (well wilson, lewis, and now holland). the AL west outside the rangers isn’t good offensively. the A’s and mariners are among the worst in all of baseball. might monitor their starts for when they play teams like the yanks and rays and twins in texas, but otherwise, i’m all in on them.

  83. Grey

    Grey says:

    @GastelessTarbage: Olsen, Holland…

    @3matt: Lose him.

    @Commish Cauda (formerly Mike): Castro

    @Tony: Ha…. Go for it.

    @steamer: Yeah… Ugh.

    @ThePoonTycoon: 2nd? Hmm… That seems high.

    @steamer: Ervin? Johan? I’ll assume the former. You can probably get a quick starting guy that someone might not trust, like Hughes or a slow starting guy like Johan.

    @Brandon: Lure him into a dark alley?

    @Beau: If you need steals, Robot for Pierre. But with Pods, I can’t see how that’s a possible need.

    @Enrique: Gorz for tomorrow. If they’re on waivers now, you can just shuffle them on and off.

    @Buddo Chezuski: Seems like an unnecessary move.

    @William: Thanks

    @Kid: Ibanez, Chris Young, Damon, Fukodome…

    @Jarrad: Lose him for Boesch for now, once Guillen returns, we’ll look at the options again.

    @mc serch: Hehe

    @GopherDay: Verlander

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: Ha and ouch. I’d ignore Bernadina.

    @Rico: Slowey for Wells.

    @Frank Rizzo: Thanks for the heads up!

    @Enrique: I think your Runs and HRs will get better. Your WHIP may not, but it’s tough to chance WHIP. Your steals aren’t going to get better unless there’s a Xmas miracle with Roberts and EY Jr. is not going to cut it. I’d look to trade Wigginton for Asdrubal. I’d think Asdrubal’s owner would do it since Asdrubal hasn’t done anything, but if he does what he should it’ll be better for your team.

    @floridamach1: Trade him for Ryan Howard.

    @Bodymore: Thanks… I’d lose Myers.

    @mauledbypandas: Ha

    @royce!: Hehe… Nice.

    @Real Tom: Sure

    @Howie Met Your Mother: Garland, but why are you sitting anyone?

    @dingers: Grady

    @genghis chone: Thornton….

    @Beau: Sure and sure.

    @Frank Rizzo: I’d take Manny.

    @bobbo: I’m starting him.

    @dj: Sure

    @Mr. Rickey: Betancourt, Villanueva…

    @Wilsonian: Holland over LeBlanc…

    @ThePoonTycoon: 1, I guess. Bit confusing.

    @dingers: Holland

    @casey jones mcgehee: Can lose Beckham for Snider.

    @dsimon: Okay…

    @Arthur O: Here’s hoping…

    @EL BURRO: Lose Maybin for Wallace. I like Holland too.

  88. Beau says:

    Was going add snider from waivers and realilzed that somehow swisher is still a FA grab him instead?

  89. Dad says:

    @Dad: It was between him and Vlad in my draft and i literally flipped a coin. Stupid, stupid coin.

  90. dsimon says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: Why thank you. I also enjoyed it. Dan not David though :)

  91. EL BURRO says:

    @POON TYCOON — agreed 100%, the AL West may be the new NL West, which is usually my favorite division to target for arms. Die hard Padres fan, so I know what PetCo does to bats. Ole!

    My only caveat here about the AL West is that Arlington can and will get nasty for pitchers once that summer heat sets in, but regardless – big on Holland as i had him ranked as my #4 on my 2010 Biggest Impact ARMS in Minors list this year. In case your curious, here is my Top 15 list (as of 5/9):

    #1. Stephen Strausburg – Washington Nationals, AAA
    #2. Aroldis Chapman – Cincinnati Reds, AAA
    #3. Jeremy Hellickson – Tampa Bay Rays, AAA
    #4. Derek Holland – Texas Rangers, AAA
    #5. Jake Arrieta – Baltimore Orioles, AAA
    #6. Christian Friedrich – Colorado Rockies, AA
    #7. Jhoulys Chacin – Colorado Rockies, AAA
    #8. Madison Bumgarner – San Francisco Giants, AAA
    #9. Daniel Hudson – Chicago White Sox, AAA
    #10. Drew Storen – Washington Nationals, AAA (*RP)
    #11. Martin Perez – Texas Rangers, AA
    #12. Andrew Cashner – Chicago Cubs, AAA
    #13. Carlos Carrasco – Cleveland Indians, AAA
    #14. Kyle Drabek – Toronto Blue Jays, AA
    #15. Chris Tillman – Baltimore Orioles, AAA

  93. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    @Grey: Given me = stupid, which SAGNOFer is worth a pick-up? Rajai Davis? Podsednik? Or is it worth trading Dotel for Gardner?

    Podsednik = leading off but is old and sucks
    Rajai Davis = hitting 9th in terrible offense and sucks
    Gardner = hitting 2nd in great offense, so I figure is worth actually trading for, even with SAGNOF FAs available

    Ironic that, in my chase for a closer, I may actually lose a closer to replace the schmo I dropped. GLARGH.

    @dsimon: Stop being coy. I did have problems with season five.

  96. EL BURRO says:

    @grey – so you agree that Brett Wallace will prove more valuable in 2010 than:

    Jeremy Hermida
    Hank Blalock

    Pedro Alvarez

    When do you think Jays make the call and what do you project him at #s wise?

    Holland or Medlen? Are either worth picking up with a current starting staff of Verlander, Nolasco, Beckett, Hughes, Peavy, Buerhle. I’d be dropping someone like Putz or Santos.

    where did you read that? source?

  104. @ThePoonTycoon: thanks Poon. As expected, Swish out of the lineup this afternoon. Having a hard time dropping him for Smoak(until he’s likely no longer on the wire!), & owned Snider for a while…batting 9th in that lineup is really as barren as it can get in the AL. What say you Grey? Smoak for Swish?

  105. BSA says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: Especially helpful when following Grey’s morning lightening round.

  106. keith says:

    I have 2 spots open(of/util) in a mixed 12 team 6×6 OPS/Hits league to be filled by the following:

    Do I play matchups or just stick swisher and drew in there and spot start the two young guys? Sonovabenched snider last night ><

  107. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Arthur O: Nope

    @floridamach1: Not sure… Bad reads? Bad jumps? Only so many options.

    @Beau: Snider… Swisher is hurting.

    @dsimon: It’s your brother?

    @Cheese: Blanks

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: Trade Dotel for Gardner.

    @steamer: Not over Kennedy.

    @EL BURRO: As of right now, none of them are doing anything, so grab the guy you like. I don’t see much from Wallace as of right now.

    @Kazmere: Peavy, Oswalt…

    @keith: I’d drop Buerhle for Kennedy…

    @BookieBob: Ha

    @keith: Snider and Smoak…

  108. papasmurf says:

    I am liking AJ in the 2 hole from my perspective. He’s actually played pretty well lately. One of the few hitters to get me R and RBI.

    My team’s near the top in homers but at the bottom in R and RBI. Not sure what’s up with that. I guess not only do my hitters hit badly (team BA still below .250), but they play on weak offensive teams.

  109. tHe ShiT says:

    @Grey: It’s amazing how I had to veto a trade this week (I’m one of my league’s 3 trade commissioners) of PacMan 4 Price. PacMan was dropped in the 16 team h2h league earlier 4 Dice-K. Should PacMan be owned and who to drop 4 him: Fowler or Robot? Lastly, do u think PacMan has finally turned it around or are the last few games a fluke? Thx and good morning! Beautiful day in LA 2day…

  110. Tony says:

    @tHe ShiT: david price for adam jones? that shouldnt be vetoed….

  111. Fletch says:

    @ Grey: you like Cueto, Porcello or Gio next week? …all of them with 2 start weeks.

  112. Grey

    Grey says:

    @tHe ShiT: He should be owned over Fowler if you don’t need speed. Good morning!

  113. Tom Emanski says:

  114. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    @Grey: Yes. Am attempting to do that now. Gardner owner lives in Italy so who knows when/if he’ll see offer.

    I have two other (better) closers: Neftali and Marmol. Would you trade either of them for Gardner?

    Also: I have KJ at 2B — is it worth claiming Theriot off waivers? I need Rs and SBs. Also: mental help. I need that also.

  115. tHe ShiT says:

    @Tony: Why shouldn’t that be vetoed?

  116. PhillyYorker says:

    Recent moves: Picked up Cueto, Hughes and Holland—I rock!

    Dropped Olivo for Ruiz — Olivo goes 5 for 5 and Ruiz gets hurt the same day the transaction goes thru —I suck!

    Wandy just got dropped. How is everyone feeling about him? Still in love from what he did for me last year, but haven’t been paying much attention to him this year.

  117. Frank Rizzo says:

    looks like they might give it a try in detroit. not under a delay. color me surprised.

  118. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    @Grey: Yeah. He took over Pavarotti’s team when he died. We gave him number-one waiver priority.

    The Theriot Dilemma is yet another example of How My #2 Pick Overall Ruined My Draft. Normally the plan is two or three guys capable of 20+ steals, plus some schmo SS who could steal 40. (Julio Lugo, where have you gone?)

    But did I get that schmo SS*? No. I got Hanley. Well, that’s just great. And I didn’t want to tie up an OF spot with some sadsack SAGNOFer, so… PLAN RUINED.

    Thanks a lot Hanley Ramirez.

    @tHe ShiT: I agree it should be vetoed. It’s not terribly one-sided. Jones was going in the 7th round this year, earlier than Price in most drafts. Sure, he’s been disappointing, but in a deep league I can see someone buying-low on him.

    If I was in a league where that trade got vetoed, I’d look for another league.

    *Also featured on “Sesame Street” in Nazi Germany.

  119. tHe ShiT says:

    @ All:
    Yunel Escobar was dropped when he got injured. Should he be owned over Starlin in my 16 team h2h league?

  120. Tony says:

    @tHe ShiT: really? adam jones for Price? after 5 weeks? I’m pretty sure Jones went in about the 6-8th round and price went WAYYY after, not that it matters now, their value is where it is, but if he can tank that much in 5 weeks what could he do if he turns it around for 5 weeks? He was a highly touted prospect in SEA and still is…. look AROD/PUJOLs for Beltre/Dotel is vetoable, that trade isn’t….. its got as much chance of swinging either way as any deal….. its classic BUY LOW on JONES. Price is rolling but he’s also in the AL EAST…. trades shouldn’t go down if both owners want it and think its helping them, ONLY FOR COLLUSION.

    12 team mixed h2h keeper league avg, obp, hits, hrs, rbis, runs, steals and errors are the offensive categories.

    who wins this deal a.lind for ad.jones and g.beckham (id be giving up jones and beckham but have mcgehee for 3b and crawford,mccutchen, c.young and hawpe in my of)

  124. albertalbert says:

    Any Astro experts out there? Pence is a FA, and was a 10th rounder in the draft. How do you think he’ll fare the rest of the year? (To pick him up, I’d need to drop Fukodome, and I kind of like the idea of spot starting him agast RH’ers, but if Pence is gonna turn it around…)

  125. peter says:

    Time to cut Robot Jones in a 12 team for Snider? Could also drop Borbon, but he’s just starting to come around in the last week or so.

  126. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: D’oh! Meant to say “shouldn’t be vetoed.” Should not. Not should.

  127. Tony says:

    @albertalbert: ive been holding pence all year, he’s a streaky dude, he batted .282/.388/.257/.245/.232/.288 month to month in 2009. Basically roto wise he’s gonna put up an overall solid line something like 25/10 and bat .280-.290, if he gets really hot maybe more, but this horrible start sucks for his yr end line. H2H i’m gonna try and sell him if he goes off for a month like he did LAST YEAR in may…..

  128. NukeLaDouche says:

    Anyone seen F-Her pitch lately. I haven’t seen but from his numbers it seems like something is up. Possible injury? Any reason to try to dump him for something big now before its too late?

  129. Baron Von Vulturewins

    Baron Von Vulturewins says:

    @albertalbert: Here’s my rant on Pence.

    At the end of the season, he’ll probably have a nice stat line: .275/25/80/15. That’s useful? Right?

    Except maybe it isn’t?

    I’d drop Fukudome for Pence, but I do think carrying Pence is worse than carrying someone else who can at least do one thing really well. Because while Pence is kind of okay in everything he’s not really great, or even that good, in anything. And I don’t see him breaking to the next level in any one category:

    i.e. a line like .300/100/30/100/20

    which would be super-useful. Instead, he gives you okay average, minus-power (for an OF), minus-RBIs, and some steals. As Mad Magazine would say: Bleeccchhh!!

    I think you’re actually better off with someone who’ll at least over-contribute in two cats or more.

    Maybe I’m wrong. I’m sure people have won titles while starting Pence.

    Also: The Astros suck.

  130. ThePoonTycoon says:

    gallardo + pence or haren

    pick a side

  131. peter says:

    @NukeLaDouche: He’s given up 3 HR in the last 2 starts, with 8:8 BB/K. Not pretty. But I haven’t heard anything about injury. He’s walked 2, so far today. It’s worth monitoring; but it’s likely just a rough spot.

  132. John Buck. For real? Who’s got the most long-term value? Buck, Barajas, Pudge, or Ruiz?

  133. Bring Back Pluto says:

    @NukeLaDouche: He looks pretty good.

  134. Grey

    Grey says:

    @peter: I’d drop Borbon if you don’t need speed. Snider and Robot are a bit of a wash.

    @ThePoonTycoon: Pence side.

    @Arthur O: I’d own Barajas.

  135. XNadyMen says:

    Does trading Kelly Johnson for Haren seem like a good move at this point? Can’t imaging how much more I can get from KJ and DH seems to be underperforming….thoughts?

  136. ThePoonTycoon says:

    @Baron Von Vulturewins: ha, baron, i didn’t see you rant till after my post. i was hedging on at least somewhat of a power bump from pence this year, and it still might come. however, i have braun and bj upton at 2 of my OF spots, and i got cruz coming off the DL this weekend. i also have snider/weeks/smoak/glaus for 2 UTIL, all of which could conceivably put up better numbers than pence, so if it takes him to do the deal i mentioned about, i am not too worried about it.

  137. peter says:

    @XNadyMen: If you can flip Kelly Johnson for Haren, great.

  138. dsimon says:

    @Grey: To quote Mr. Gump: “WE ARE OF NO RELATIONS”

    @Baron: As for season 5, I tend to agree. I thought they did a solid job wrapping up the previous storylines and tying everything together, but the whole Baltimore Sun thing just seemed like the other dsimon trying to get back at someone for previous wrongs.

    Also Grey, I saw your response on the message board. Thanks. I’m going to pursue that. I also heard from another owner who actually gave me a pretty solid summary of his needs and thoughts on my team. I might actually be able to do something around Oswalt for Car-Go which I would like. Also, this owner wants to upgrade at 2B (from Matt Downs, who I’ve never heard of) to my Brian Roberts. I know you’ve talked about this being a lost year for B-Rob, do you still feel that way? I have Kelly Johnson keeping his seat warm, but man, I don’t really expect much from Roberts when he’s healthy and I feel like if I could turn Roberts into something useful that’d be a good move for me.

    All told, with a current staff of Felix, Greinke, CC, Verlander, Oswalt, Gio, Fister, Colby and the likes of Harang, Ely, and Olsen on the FA list (though they’re certainly the cream of the crop), would I be best served by trying to trade Oswalt for CarGo and F-Her for Reynolds?

  139. Dan says:

    Which do you like better for the Util spot?
    Smoak, Brennan Boesch, J Bruce, Adam Jones, Pence, or Freese?
