6th keeper

Who to start, who to bench. Grab that WW guy? Low priced rookie or high priced stud?

6th keeper

Postby Dick Cheney » Sat Feb 14, 2009 2:00 pm

Ten-team league

maximum six keepers

have the following gentlemen to choose from:

Hanley Ramirez
Josh Hamilton
Carlos Beltran
Matt Kemp
Alexei Ramirez
David Ortiz
Joe Mauer
Garret Atkins
Corey Hart

Jake Peavy
Javier Vazquez
Edinson Volquez
Daisuke Matsuzaka
Johnny Cueto
assorted closers

My current thought is: Hanley Ramirez, Josh Hamilton, Carlos Beltran, Matt Kemp, Jake Peavy,

and a sixth man who is: Alexei Ramirez, David Ortiz, or Joe Mauer.

But I have a shortstop, where Alexei has optimal value, Ortiz may continue to break down, and Mauer is a catcher.

I could keep only five guys, and draft there, instead.

I would really appreciate any advice.

I'd go with Hart as the second keeper. Although Mauer hits for nice average and will get you almost 100 runs assuming he stays healthy, he doesn't do anything else. I've never been big on keeping catchers, especially someone like Mauer who's had difficulty in the past staying healthy. I think that Hart will bounce back and hit 280, to go along with the nice 20/20.

I think Ortiz can still hit 290 w/30 bombs, but I'm not big on keeping guys who have one, maybe 2 good seasons left in them.

That's interesting. I hadn't seriously considered Hart.

I try to look at this as though I'm at the draft. For the first five rounds, I do nothing, because those guys are in the bank. I'm eating a sandwich, maybe getting a blowjob from Christy Turlington. When the sixth round comes, I survey the scene.

I could get, automatically, any of those four guys: Hart, A. Ramirez, Ortiz or Mauer. Or I could look for greater value, if it's out there.

A Hart pick would be my fourth outfielder, my DH. My need for speed would be largely met. The draw-back with this pick is that there may be guys of nearly equal value, or potential value, available later - a Jayson Werth or Nelson Cruz in about the 12th. Or maybe Bobby Abreau or whatever in the seventh or eighth. In any case, OF is deeper than 2B, and there's only one OF spot left to fill.

With Ramirez, maybe Uggla is out there, or a Kelly Johnson or Ricky Weeks later on (Robinson Cano will never ever, ever again be on my team ever again ever). Then again, at second, Ramirez is a fine option, not far off from Brandon Phillips. And maybe I trade him later, to someone dying for a serviceable shortstop.

As for Ortiz, I agree with your argument. But I can't say he's any worse than a sixth round pick.

Oy vey.

Ramirez, since it's a keeper. Hart is fine, but you can draft him, right? Alexei will end up hitting more hr than Hart this season.
14 team h2h keeper (keep 5), $101 FAAB budget. C,1B,2B,SS,3B,MI,CI,U,5SP,2RP... It's standard 5x5, but we use quality starts instead of wins. I currently have $1 left in FAAB money.

I like alexei...hart is great, but OF seems to be deep this year with many OF options that could go 15/15, or 20/20 like hart...

I like Hart, but you got to keep Alexei.
