Re: Liriano - Does he suck?

It could be a mental issue. I had a thing that lasted almost all of my freshman year of high school where every time I started a game I'd be fine until the 3rd inning, and suddenly in the 3rd inning I just couldn't get anybody out. It made no logical sense and there was no explanation for it, but it happened without fail almost every time. Eventually I got over it, but it did suck...
Maybe Liriano's got some random freak thing happening and he just needs to work past it. I still think he'll be fine; it's not like he had an issue like that last year, so if it's mechanical, it can be fixed.

I have Ubaldo returning from the DL and I need to drop a pitcher. Which of the following should go?

Josh Johnson (no)
Francisco Liriano
Gio Gonzalez
Aaron Harang
Ian Kennedy

I'm inclined to drop Kennedy. Anyone got a better idea?

If you have to drop someone now it has to be Kennedy. But, how big's your league? Standard Stats? Who are your other droppabls bats/RPs?

I might drop Harang. You can only count on him 50% of the time anyway. Does Hodgepadre or Homeschooling better apply?

Yeah it's a toss up but you're right i trust Kennedy a little more on the small sample size. Although Harang has looked good in a SD, he also looked pretty good in Minute Maid (albeit against the lowly Astros).

I still want to see a few more starts from each before making a decision, hence the request to see more of his team/league settings before settling on a dropper.

I always try to do a 2-1 to open a spot unless the guy i'm dropping was a spot start or replacement for the guy coming off the DL

OK, here's my team. The league is a 13 (!!!) team keeper league using 6x6 scoring with OBP in place of BA and Holds as the sixth pitching stat. With only 4 bench spots and OF by position things can get very tight very quickly. Keep in mind that I'll be dropping another player soon (probably Bourjos) since Sizemore is coming back very soon.

C - John Buck
1B - Miguel Cabrera
2B - Brandon Phillips
SS - Ian Desmond
3B - David Wright
1B/3B - Justin Morneau
2B/SS - Orlando Cabrera
LF - Jose Tabata
CF - Peter Bourjos
RF - Nelson Cruz
OF - Shin Soo Choo
DH - Adam Lind
Bench - Chris Getz
DL - Grady Sizemore

SP - Josh Johnson
SP - Gio Gonzalez
RP - John Axford
RP - Brian Fuentes
P - Jon Rauch
P - Fernando Rodney
P - Jason Motte
P - Mark Melancon
P - Matt Capps
Bench - Francisco Liriano
Bench - Aaron Harang
Bench - Ian Kennedy
DL - Ubaldo Jimenez

I'm pretty pleased with the team overall with very strong hitting and speed - as you can tell most of my keepers were offensive players. I was able to keep only 2 P (Jimenez and Johnson) but it seems that every year there are enough starters/relievers to get some good guys. Much to my surprise I currently lead the league in saves - though I'm near the bottom in ERA thanks in large part to Mr. Liriano.

For those of you eyeing the middle relievers, keep in mind that Holds count for as much as Saves and the guys I'm leagued with spend a lot of attention on it.

Chris Getz seems like a waste of a spot to me, but Sizemore just got off the DL today.

Yeah seriously. Getz that outta here! And drop Borjous when you activate Size.

SP is harder to grab as the season goes on. Kennedy will be fine and Harang will be a nice spot starter at home and vs weaker opponents..

Easy cheez

Still not sure if he sucks or not....not a bad game today, but against a lineup featuring one batter with an average above .250.

I don't like the fact that he pitched 5 good innings and then gave up 2 HR separated by an out. That suggests that he's still running out of gas pretty early and suddenly becomes very hittable.

Still, it's progress to see that happening in the 6th instead of the 4th.

The first five innings were shutout ball... I can live with progress like that. He walked way too many today, though, so it may be a mirage. Time will tell on this one.
