Drafting: Catchers

Grey went over the top 20 catchers recently,

so I figured I'd take a look at where they were drafted in the RCL. Listed is any catcher who was ranked preseason or was drafted in at least 1 league.

The columns show Grey's preseason ranking, # of leagues they were drafted in, the average draft position of those selected in all 38 leagues, and the earliest and latest the catcher was selected (ND = Not Drafted).

Very interesting... Can you easily pull which teams had the most catchers that they went through? If it's not easy, don't kill yourself...

Not too tough. 8, 9 hours maybe.

Well...not surprisingly...this confirms that drafting catchers early is almost always a waste (as I learned this year by drafting %!*?&¿ Mauer for my RCL team). Only 7 guys from the top 20 were drafted in every league (plus Suzuki, who was drafted in all but 1). Meanwhile, 3 guys who were drafted in every league didn't even make the top 20 (including %!*?&¿ Mauer). 5 guys in the top 20 were not drafted in ANY leagues, including the #3 overall Avilla. 5 other top 20 guys were drafted in 6 leagues or less.

This was the year I actually went and drafted decent catchers in every league I played in. %!*?&¿ Mauer, Wieters, McCan and Santana was a 25th round keeper (which obviously did actually work out).

I will never draft a catcher before the last 2 rounds again.
