Where are you going to play them all? Obviously Hunter Pence would replace Trout, but where are you going to play Longo and Butler? You have a third baseman and a first baseman already and you don't have any UtL slots listed in your sig.

We have a 1b/3b position that goldschmidt currently fills and I could use one of them at a UTIL position

Yeah, if you needed more depth on your team this deal would make sense because you're turning one absolute monster performer into three solid performers, but you don't really need any depth; you're going to wind up having to move other offensive players if you want an efficient roster... People sitting on the bench aren't helping your team. It's also risky with Longo having not played in forever... Butler is good and Pence is consistent, but even Pence has been absolutely terrible since late June.

Who is on the other manager's roster? I think you ought to hold unless he has two top notch players that he'd want to deal for Trout, and even then I'm not sure that you really need to move Trout.

Other team: McCann, Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder, Brandon Phillips, Beltre, Braun, Pence, Longoria, Tulo, Pence. I would have room for all 3 because of the 1b/3b position and UTIL (assuming I bench Goldschmidt who has been tearing it up) but I agree I'd rather make the deal for 2 great options than 3 decent ones.

Yeah, Goldschmidt is a wasted commodity sitting on your bench... If you're interested in trading Trout, personally I think you ought to aim pretty high. One problem, though, is that this guy's strength seems to be corner infielders, which you're already pretty solid at. Maybe toss Trout and Rizzo out for Braun and Prince? I doubt he'd do that, but Troutmania is pretty strong right now. Rizzo has been hot, but he's got a pretty pathetic offense around him and he's bound to go through a Harper-like slump at some point.
Otherwise I'm not sure how much you stand to truly gain... Longo is a risk either way and Pence has been atrocious for five weeks and now is hitting in a more pitcher-friendly environment than he was in with Philadelphia. Butler has been producing pretty consistently all year so he's a nice addition to the deal no matter how you look at it, but I don't see this move actually improving your team even though it's a completely fair and even good deal in a vacuum.

Personally I'd explore options with other teams with 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 deals to consolidate your talent a bit more and then maybe this could be worth it, but as is I'm not sure that there's an option available without a decently big risk on your part.

Yeah I agree. The more I look at the original trade the less I like it. Not sure I could pull off getting those 2, but definitely going to aim higher if I deal Trout at all. Thanks
