To trade or not to trade

Postby no1gandolf » Fri Aug 27, 2010 12:25 am

Grey - this is a 14 team H2H Yahoo League with 10 keepers. I have been offered Utley and Strassburg for Votto. I also have Puhols, so I am deep at 1st base, and Kelly Johnson mans second. I told my potential trading partner to hold on for a couple of days - August 29th is the trade deadline. I am also going to check on Strass' MRI results, coming out today. However, presuming they come out ok, I still am not sure what to do. Both my trading partner and I are in the playoffs. I am aware that trading Votto is going to hurt me considerably this year, but perhaps makes me that much stronger for next season. Utley's Slugging percentage has been slowly tailing off over the last four years, and now I fear he will be the next Kinsler. His steals may go down as well. Strass, of course, could be this generation's Sandy Koufax, but I am worried about him. Well, I have bloviated enough - I really don't know whether to go or not go. :?:

Thanks, as always

If you want me to look at your team, post the team. Don't post a link to another site where the team is.
Have you given me all the info I need to judge your team? The number of teams in the league is a good start for the big overall questions.
Is your league H2H? Roto?
I don't know who's on your waivers. Don't just ask me who you should pick up. Give me names to choose from.
If you only have one team, post your team in your signature with the league parameters.
I don't know every single matchup for next week, so if you want me to choose a player for the following week and you think the matchups are important, tell me who they're facing.
There's more than one player with the same last name? Then spell out who you're talking about.
Thanks!

As good as Votto is, I'd probably take an elite 2B over a soon-to-be elite 1B, just because there's fewer great MI. That's including St. St.'s surgery.
I like sports with balls in them.

Utley has been terrible since he came back from that injury (it's understandable that he's a bit rusty), and he wasn't doing all that well before it, either... I think I'd rather have Votto, even despite having Pujols at first already. I'd rather go after Cano, who is on the rise, than Utley, who may very well be on the decline:

73 Extra base hits in 2005 - 39 2B, 6 3B, 28 HR
76 Extra base hits in 2006 - 40 2B, 4 3B, 32 HR
75 Extra base hits in 2007 - 48 2B, 5 3B, 22 HR in only 132 games.
78 Extra base hits in 2008 - 41 2B, 4 3B, 33 HR
63 Extra base hits in 2009 - 28 2B, 4 3B, 31 HR

He had full season lows in BA, Slugging, OPS, RBI, and doubles last year, and his BA/OPS/SLG are all down significantly again this year. He had a VERY steady mid-70's number of extra base hits per season going until last year and his Isolated power number is at .170 this year after having never been below .219 in any other season since he got the full time starting gig.

I still think Utley will be one of the best 2B next year, but I don't think he's going to put up consistent first round numbers anymore, whereas Votto should.
