Can we stop talking about how running into the catcher is “not” part of baseball? It’s getting really old and stupidity is bleeding from every multimedia channel. If Matt Treanor, or Misty May for that matter, got run over and injured this would be a blip on the radar for baseball. All I can say is I can’t wait until the Marlins and Giants play again and settle their differences with a good ol’ donnybrook. Baseball settles its differences between the lines, and all this talk about how one of the prodigal sons of baseball got hurt is a snooze fest. I am old school when watching this game.  If you don’t want to get hit, don’t stand on the tracks when the train is coming through. Okay, rant over. There seems to be lots of speculation going on in the game right now. Who will be buyers and who will be sellers. This has some rippling effects on fantasy as guys switch leagues and make AL/NL only leagues scramble for FAAB bucks. Should be a fun next month of real baseball and hope that it relates well to fake baseball. Good luck on this week’s fantasy endeavors. (Please keep in mind that match-ups and pitchers may change.)

Danny Duffy vs. TOR – Villanueva
Paul Maholm vs. ARI – Duke
Josh Outman @BAL- Britton

Josh Collmenter @Pit – Karstens
Jonathon Niese @ Mil – Gallardo
Derek Holland @ Min – Blackburn

Dillon Gee @ PIT – Morton
Jason Marquis @ SD – Latos
Ryan Vogelsong vs. CIN – Wood

Rick Porcello (@Tex vs. Harrison, Sea vs. Hernandez) Has gotten numbers to look healthier against bad hitting teams, now re-read who he is playing this week. Strugglin’ against LH, but away ERA is a cozy 2.39.

Joel Pineiro (TB vs. Price, KC vs. O’Sullivan) Still gunning for that milestone win. K’s are nonexistent basically. Nothing cures offensive ills better than a good ol’ swig of O’Sullivans.

Freddy Garcia (Bos vs. Lester, Cle vs. Tomlin) Anyone remember Freddy from the old Yankee stadium who used to bang on his pot and have funny limericks on a sign? Yeah, this isn’t him. WHIP is still bad, but lineup chases all evil flying monkeys away.

Mike Leake (CHC vs. Lopez, @SF vs. Sanchez) Not for nothing, but wasn’t he Kelly Leake’s dad in the Bad News Bears? Cincy’s lineup makes him look better. Going to win a lot of 8-6 type ballgames.

Clayton Richard (Col vs. Mortensen, Was vs. Lannan) Low end 2 starts for the front man of the new “Petco Shop Boys.“ ERA at home is far superior. Rinse and repeat for next guy.

Tim Stauffer (Col vs. Jimenez, Was vs. Zimmermann) East end boys and west end girls. Sorry have that song stuck in my head now. Run support is awful. I like Richard’s 2 opposing pitchers better.

Javier Vazquez (Mil vs. Greinke, Ari vs. Kennedy) He is about as good at fantasy as Wilt Chamberlain was at monogamy. K potential is there….somewhere. Look closer it’s wearing a red striped wool hat, oh my bad I lost track of where we were.

Matt Harrison (Det vs. Porcello, @Min vs. Swarzak) Blisters be gone. Was good to start year, then had to change the sheets. Last 4 starts are back on the Matt Foley path. Away ERA at 2.53. Hope the medication he got from Washington isn’t habit forming.

Jon Garland (@Phi vs. Oswalt, @Col vs. Jimenez) Ugh and Yikes. Nice to see ya, Jon. See you in a week when you’re actually semi-rosterable. Bottom of barrel, bars closing, grab any girl situation here.

Felipe Paulino (Tor vs. Morrow, @Ana vs. Santana) My odd ball of the week. I had some preseason love for him in Colorado, fail. Change of scenery has so far has been mmm-ok. If your digging this deep you prolly need a shovel and some lime.

  1. jonnycat says:

Snagged Doug Fister last week and so far so good. This week I don’t like any of the 2-start options. None of ’em.

  2. Steve says:

Some real nice recommendations from last week, and of course Burnett is going OK ;-)
However, as is mostly the case, I’m here for some MR input. Your thoughts please on Vinnie Pestano (CLE) and Greg Holland (KC). Nice ratios and Ks for both in the last little while…

  3. Oilcan Giuseppe says:

Smokey:couldnt agree more w/ your Posey comments. And Brian Sabean is a grade-A d bag for his comments about Cousins.Y’think He would be threatening Scott Cousins if he had ran over Eli Whiteside?

anyway, what do y’think of Vargas in a 10 team h2h league?Im tempted to grab him.four of his last 6 starts have been impressive, but the other two were clunkers.

  4. bfeels says:

Not a SP quetion, but anyway…how do you rank these guys the rest of the year: Tabata, Bourgeois, Young Jr?

  5. m says:

    garland is on DL, no?

  6. Smokey

    Smokey says:

@jonnycat: Its a tough week alot of low end guys match up against top flight pitchers.

@Steve: I like Holland and just picked him up a few places. Other guys who have been pitching decent in the underappreciated MR are Jim Johnson and Logan Ondrusek.

@Oilcan Giuseppe: Sabean is an idiot, hope Torre fines him. Vargas is exactly that type of pitcher, but what pitcher doesnt have a clunker that is ranked near him. but look at his periphs compared to those guys its pretty tempting to add him.

@bfeels: I like them Bourgeois Tabata and than Young. Young is last because I’m really not sure Tracy trusts him yet against lefties.

  7. Smokey

    Smokey says:

@m: Will be i do this post 2 days in advance. He wasn’t usuable this week anyways, now he really isn’t.

  8. That guy says:

Please rank (production for the rest of the year):

    Carlos Pena

  9. Mr2Bits says:

Sit Youk against Cahill and play Berkman today(seems he came out of his slump last night)

  10. Smokey

    Smokey says:

@That guy: Pena Morneau Morse Moreland. Catchers I don’t really rank because I dont care as long as they arent hurt. I like Arencibia and Napoli out of the group though.

  11. Smokey

    Smokey says:

    @Mr2Bits: Good toss up there.
Youk 6 PA is 1-3 with 3 BB’s against Cahill.
    Lance 12 PA 3-8 with 4 BB’s against Wells.

  12. OregonianRedbird says:

Anyone have thoughts on what we can expect from Rubby de la Rosa? Is he rosterable in a 12- or 14-team mixed league? I don’t know much about him, but grabbed him when I thought he had a chance to get saves. Now I guess he’s going to be starting.

  13. AL KOHOLIC says:

@OregonianRedbird: real good numbers in minors great k rate,im starting him to see what he can do

  14. Smokey

    Smokey says:

@OregonianRedbird: Thing that I like is that he has only given up 5 HR’s in just about 200 minor league innings. As with any younger pitcher control is usually the thing that needs the most work.

  15. lou says:

Would you start Cahill today against the sox at home in a 10 team roto league with a starts limit?

  16. Smokey

    Smokey says:

@lou: Really poor career numbers against the Sawx. I could see giving him the day off today.

  17. Giant JJ says:

Would you trade masterson for cody Ross or ibanez? 20 team

  18. SDPete says:

I picked up Collmenter as speculation in a H2H league. I’m facing a rival next week for overall league first place. The key is our league starts on Thursdays this year due to the weird season start, so Collmenter gets 2 starts for me. Is he definitely worth a start, or is that just me?

  19. Smokey

    Smokey says:

@Giant JJ: Depends on your needs for an OF, and P depth.

    @SDPete: Yea.

  20. Too Live Crudite says:

    Sorry Smokey, but terrible mini-rant.

Pretty much every intelligent mind who has considered this issue has recognized that barreling into a stationary person — a vicious and violent act in an otherwise non-contact sport — is by no means some kind of “unchangeable” aspect of the game. In fact, most baseball execs would get rid of it immediately if they were given an easy way to institute the change.

Now, like others, you’ll snap-retreat into a defensive pseudo-traditionalist stance, but really: just because Buster Posey is a “Golden Boy”, and just because that’s the primary reason the issue is getting extra media play, does not mean that ending a silly practice isn’t worthwhile.

Do you advocate linebackering pitchers who cover home plate on a passed ball and inadvertently block the plate?

    Of course not.

  21. bfeels says:

I was one of two expansion teams in what is now a 12 team keeper. Rosters are pretty small – start all the diamond positions and a utility (no MI, CI or extra OF spots). Losses are one of the pitching categories.

OF: McCutchen, Bruce, Granderson and Heyward
Infield: Dunn, Uggla, Drew, McGehee, Montero.
    Bench: Bourgeois, Lawrie
Pitchers: Price, Gallardo, Scherzer, D. Hudson, A. Sanchez, Garza, Liriano

Long way of asking a question, but….Although it is a keeper league I feel an itch to try to trade Heyward given my outfield. The top 3b are on lockdown in this league so I am thinking about targeting a SP. Should I be patient or shop around? Thanks!

  22. Smokey

    Smokey says:

@Too Live Crudite: What you said is like what i said, our own personal opine.

@bfeels: of course always try and shop around. It never hurts to ask around because one guys junk is another guys gold and that by no means says the Heyward is junk.

  23. In a keeper league where we keep 4 keepers, got offered S Drew and M Cain for Hanley. This guy is giving up, 1-7 on the year. Points league. This afternoon I was sober and reADY to pass. Now I’m drunk as shit and ready to accespt. seems like a no brainer now as juonhhy bwalker has gpoteen to my head. should i do this? cain used to be shit to me, but now i respect his numbers. grey, you gotta weigh in on this, don’t thinky our a cain guy but this is a solid offer? no? help? if i trade hanley then my keepers are: hallady, wright, stanton, heyward.

  24. Buge Hoobs says:

Utley just dropped in my 5×5 10 team. My 2b now is ugglay. drop my lowest ranked bn p ejax ?

  25. Oilcan Giuseppe says:

Smokey:10 team h2h 8×8….could you rank these SP’s for me?

    Guthrie,Vargas,Fister and Happ.

  26. Buge Hoobs says:

out waivered by the team in 1st place … aargh!

  27. Eng says:

    Start Danks vs Pineda?

  28. EK says:

    Lester or Gallardo going fwd?
