You know what is fun this time of year?  The bullpen shuffle.  Whomever is closest to the computer or phone wins the waiver game in most cases.  Well… that’s now the case with the Padres with the trade of Brad Hand to the Indians.  The waiver wire is set ablaze for one Kirby Yates, but is he the guy forever, or the guy for now?  I am leaning that the trade door in San Diego is gonna revolve one more time and see Yates come out the other side a bullpen piece rather than a closing man.  Hand’s still a valuable commodity, granted he won’t be a full-time closer with the Tribe, but his peripherals and Cody Allen‘s shakiness as of late… will lead to a “sometimes” situation.  Hand is a hold in all leagues because he should get a shot for every third save or so with his new club.  Add in the K-rate over 13 and he has intrigue that only a dozen or so non-closers have. Back to Yates though, since this is the afternoon post and Grey has gone over it this morning and most likely will after this in his buy post, but Yates has value for now.  In fact, he’s had value for most of the year in holds leagues, with a 11+ K/9 and a ton of success in the setup game in the reliever farm known as the Whale’s Vagina. So why am I so hesitant to give him the go?  He is a journeyman reliever whose value is never going to be higher than right now, or in eight days with some saves to his name.  So if you swung and missed at the waiver wire add for saves with Yates, grab Craig Stammen for free and just wait.  Waiting is always a good thing, especially with a maybe-closer in the making, albeit one with not much quantity potential.  More bullpen goodies and post all star tidbits after the bump.  Cheers!

  • Archie Bradley still leads the holds way with 26 and is on pace for 47.  Which would be the most well-off all time since the stat was incorporated into fake baseball.  The previous high was 41 by Tony Watson and Joel Peralta.  Bradley is also on pace for 80 appearances and over 90 innings, all good things for this year, bad for next.
  • Fire Carl Edwards Jr. back up in most leagues.
  • As I said of above with the Padres, about being a farm for quality relievers, the Pirates have to be in the top 2-3 teams for sneaky goodies.  Kyle Crick enters the Spanish pirate trio of usefulness.  14 straight scoreless apps, 10+ K rate and 5 holds in the last 17 games.
  • Adding on to the lede, Oliver Perez losses value, especially when Andrew Miller eventually makes his way back.  Neil Ramirez not so much and if you need someone to sleep on from that pen it would be him.
  • Can Juan Minaya be putting himself into the White sox closer picture for the future with a nice 14 game stretch?  Three holds, 1.50 ERA and doing better with control this time around.
  • Is any bullpen more frustrating than the Phillies?  Now add Pat Neshek into the mix of possible… whatever the “all” are.  Collectiveness?
  • Sleeper reliever of the Week:  Jesse Biddle, gets caught up with the high quality arms of Wink and Mint.

Great write-up…totally agree on you with Yates. Stammen is the get in my opinion.

@Slimcompoop: thanks. I guess we shall see if Preller is full on for ripping people off the year.

Yes, great write-up. I picked up Yates Wendesday night just before the Hand trade. Woo-hoo! Praying Kirby doesn’t get traded, too. I would bet the farm that another reliever on my team, Britton, gets traded, too. The question is: will he be a set up man for a team like the Yanks or Bo Sox or a closer for the Braves or Phillies? I feel his situation is like a casino game.

@Doc Samson: The orioles are awful to predict and I guessed the D backs a few weeks ago. Play the waiting game and grab Givens just in case

I held on bidding for Yates this morning. Would you drop Barraclough for Stammen? Might sound crazy, but Barraclough’s hardly getting any.

@joemorganhair: I mean throwing a save away for maybe a save is an awful strategy unless you are winning the category or in a comfy place at least.

@Smokey: True. It’s H2H so I think I’m focusing on end of season/playoffs. Right now I’m in 2nd and good to coast for a bit.

@Alex: yeah but throwing away a guy who MIGHT NOT be closer later for a guy who MIGHT BE closer later isn’t good if you want saves. parlay betting isn’t an easy way to win (esp with bookies as you don’t get NEARLY your equity when you win them)

at least 5 of those dudes on that chart haven’t been rosterable in awhile, what is the jist of it?

    • Alfred E. Naujocks says:
      (link)

@batflix: it’s pretty clear what that chart shows, it doesn’t equate to a “buy all of these guys now”. however, the writing part above the chart does in fact do that. it’s completely arguable that all of them EXCEPT nicasio (due to removal from the leverage spots, and that happened a while back) certainly retain value.

      • Alfred E. Naujocks says:

@Alfred E. Naujocks: roe obv not an add for a bit either, hurt and d.castillo has supplanted him.

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:

@batflix: season long hold stats are misleading but if you are paying attention to it the guys on the list that aren’t usable any longer make more sense of how in flux it is. Especially with Nicasio

20 team redraft with holds and K/9. i have colome, yates, alexander, arano, bearclaw and greene in DL slot. drop who for greene?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@Alfred E. Naujocks: tough one. Can you leave Greene on DL and hold him there until he gets dealt lol

      • Alfred E. Naujocks says:
        (link)

@Smokey: exactly what i had been doing till today, found a drop with the nazi in exile east (NYY). so now all of them are in active slots. greene benched since he’s least likely to be used in any given day. what about dropping one of these for minter (dropped by somebody recently).

@Luvdarooks: if that’s b.anderson MIA he’s been better than moran entire season. him. his playing time is also safe.

@Luvdarooks: agree with the longest screen name in history. Anderson is getting the most looks, more abs is a good thing. Remaining I have Braun ahead of Ahmed.

in AL only with holds and saves sold separately i have j.anderson, k.herrera, brach, romo. finally found the spot with sunday nazi (NYY) going down and pretty turrible SP out there to slot romo to SP slot (4 max RP slots) and try to nab an extra closer during trade deadline. who’s best add: pressly/rogers, d.castillo (alvarado owned), minaya

  8. DodgerWindowClosed says:

    1. Please pick two…..Best bets for holds come Sept playoffs…..Robertson, Alexander, T Watson,

    2. again Sept playoffs focused….pick one of these for best contributions (cats are: Saves, Holds, ERA, WHIP, Wins, Losses). Parker, Robertson, Minter, Viz as I can not figure out what The Braves will do (Britton?, Viz injury?).

    3. Time to drop Jo Ma for Braun?

    • Smokey

      Smokey says:
      (link)

@DodgerWindowClosed: 1. Robertson and al Alexander. All three good options though no wrong combo.
      2. Minter if no Britton.
      3. Sure. Changing a positive bat is a good thing. How positive may be minimal but still
