The way the Yankees have handled Montero makes you want to say what no Jesus has said since the first one, “Oy vey.” Is Jesus Montero ever going to start? Only the Yankees and the mysterious monks that Dan Brown’s probably writing about know that answer. Last year, I said no, he won’t start. This year, yeah, I think he finally sees time making him draftable in mixed leagues. Posada overstayed his welcome like your uncle that burps the alphabet. We’re going to finally see what this kid can do. And when I say kid I’m not just being condescending like your friend that calls everyone kid, I’m saying kid because Montero will still only be 22 years old when the 2012 season starts. The Yankees would do well going a bit younger in at least one spot on their roster. The other Jesus knows they’re old enough. So what can we expect of Jesus Montero for 2012 fantasy baseball?
Big time pop and a solid average. He’s the truth. Total package, Totes McGotes. Slotting him into the Yankee lineup will make him hard to deny. Like holy rollers, scouts have high praise for Jesus. It’s easy to see why. In 2012, I could see him putting up a season similar to Victor Martinez. Saying that is slightly misleading. Let’s look at what I said in the intro paragraph, “This year, yeah, I think he finally sees time…” And that’s me quoting me from about 100 words ago! I didn’t say where he’d see time at. Pretty sneaky, Grey! I don’t think he sees time at catcher, which will mean he has no catcher eligibility. He only was behind the plate three times last year with 14 times as a DH. Makes him a DH in Yahoo and ESPN leagues. So the question is when will he see 5 games for the catcher eligibility? He may not for a couple of months. I know I wouldn’t start him behind the plate if I were trying to win games, which I think is still the point of baseball and not having the most amusing or patriotic 7th inning stretch. For 2012, I see a line of 70/20/85/.290. Still terrific, but it would be more terrific (terrific-er?) if he sees more time at catcher (more catcherer?).
