Congratulations to the 2012 champions, RCL 40’s Rank Railheads. Co-managers Charley and JungleMike guided the Railheads to an incredible 119-point finish, missing out on perfection by a mere 3 stolen bases. While they had pretty much clinched their league title long ago, the overall title was up for grabs, and they continued to carefully make the moves necessary to stay ahead of the pack.

The Draft

I have included each player’s Razzball Player Rater rank [after the name]. The stats represent a player’s contributions while in the starting lineup for the Railheads.

(2) Miguel Cabrera [3] 109/44/139/.330/4 Always a smart pick.

(23) Curtis Granderson [23] 102/43/106/.232/10 Started with the top 2 HR hitters!

(26)Andrew McCutchen [6] 107/31 HR/96 RBI/.327/20 Fortunate to get Cutch, as he was often taken in the 2nd round.

Couldn’t have a much better start to a draft. These 3 totaled 318 runs, 118 home runs, 341 RBI, and 34 stolen bases while hitting .297 for the Railheads.

(47) David Price [8] 16/2.33/1.08/174 Excellent start to pitching staff. Passed on CC Sabathia and Madison Bumgarner and ended up with the third ranked pitcher for the season.

(50) Starlin Castro [67] 78/14/78/.283/25 Disappointing runs, but not a terrible 5th rounder.

(71) Yovani Gallardo [77] 13/3.90/1.33/167 Too good to pass up at the end of the 6th round.

(74) B.J. Upton [63] 79/28/78/.249/30 Close to Grey’s projections with more HRs and fewer steals.

(95) Mat Latos [68] 1/5.97/1.57/18 Dropped May 5 after 28 IP. Latos did get turned around, finishing with 14 wins and a 3.48 ERA.

(98) Buster Posey [26] 78/24/103/.336/1 One of the great bargains in 2012.

(119) Joel Hanrahan [104] 5/2.72/1.27/67/36 Good first closer. A bit early, but was the 7th closer taken.

(122) Tommy Hanson [242] 10/4.02/1.35/98 Dropped July 17.

(143) Neil Walker [197] 10/2/14/.253/1 Dropped May 25.

(146) Jason Motte [46] 4/2.75/0.92/86/42 A great bargain.

(167) Nick Swisher [118] 57/20/73/.248/1

(170) Mike Moustakas [270] 55/18/54/.253/3

(191) Chris Sale [30] 15/2.62/1.04/142 Another brilliant pick.

(194) Lucas Duda [495] 11/4/13/.236/0 Dropped May 9

(215) Zack Cozart [346] 11/1/3/.260/0 Dropped April 18

(218) Brennen Boesch [464] 3/1/6/.222/0 Dropped April 20

(239) Tyler Clippard [133] 2/4.02/1.16/61/31 Dropped April 18, but picked up again May 23 after Clip recorded his first save.

(242) Jonny Venters [359] 2/1.74/1.55/20 Dropped May 7

(230) Gavin Floyd [279] Dropped March 30

(266) Mat Gamel [--] 10/1/6/.246/3 Dropped March 30

(287) Jose Altuve [137] 0 for 3/1 run; Dropped April 8. Would have been a nice bargain.

(290) Omar Infante [190] Dropped March 28

An excellent draft, as you would expect from a team with 119 points. You can overcome a mediocre draft, but for the truly exceptional season, having your top picks perform like top picks to go along with a few late round surprises is essential. In this draft, 3 of the top 4 picks ended up as top 10 players. The other ranked 23rd. Then Posey (9th round) and Sale (16th round) were also top 30 players. 6 players in the top 30. Very impressive.

Key pickups

Martin Prado (April 20, waivers) 72/9/64/.306/16

Josh Reddick (April 30, FA) 55/22/61/.233/8

Carlos Ruiz (May 7, FA) 31/8/36/.335/3 Dropped August 4.

Huston Street (May 19, FA) 17 saves/0.68/0.53 Dropped August 11.

Aaron Hill (May 25, FA) 76/21/68/.319/10

Yoenis Cespedes (June 1, FA) 48/13/48/.299/10

Kris Medlen (August 2, FA) 7/0.96/0.79/64

Erick Aybar (August 9, free agent) 32/3/14/.333/13

Grant Balfour (August 11, FA) 16 saves

Streaming

Mark Buehrle, Ervin Santana, Scott Diamond, Tommy Milone, Bud Norris, Wei-Yin Chen, J.A. Happ, Clay Buchholz, Jake Westbrook, and Ubaldo Jimenez combined for 16 wins and 109 strikeouts with an ERA of 2.40 and 1.13 WHIP.

A truly amazing season, starting with a great draft and continuing with smart adds throughout the year. Nicely done.

Also, congratulations to Ryan Carey (Mastersball Carey), who held off Rudy to win the RCL Experts League, and all the league champions. Hope you’ll play again next year.

Thanks everyone for reading my posts this season, and all the kind comments. I’ll be continuing to post numbers in the Fantasy Baseball Forums, so check them out once in a while.

  1. Congrats Charley and JungleMike on a fantastic season!

Thanks a ton to VinWins for his awesome Commisionership/weekly updates!

Congrats to Ryan for besting me in the RCL League. My pitching was stellar (57 points) but couldn’t overcome the Longoria/Votto injuries on offense….

      @Rudy Gamble, Thank you.

    • @Rudy Gamble, Thanks Rudy – you made me sweat quite a bit down the stretch – as did Tim D, DD and Scott P. I had a blast.

I will also second the kudos for Vin – great job all season long. Obviously getting an undrafted Mike Trout on April 1st was a big difference maker.

I will definitely be back next year to try and defend my title.

First and foremost, a shout out for this great recap of an interesting year in Razzball Commenter Leagues.

As the 46th place finisher, I want to personally give a shout out to Stoner Lincecum for schmohawking my merry band of schmohawks, aptly named, The Schmohawks and I assume every other team that drafted him.

In my case, it was in the 3rd round. He hideously inflamed my WHIP and ERA, and if that sounds ugly, I can assure you it was. I lost my league by three points, and while I’m no Rudy, I bet that if I could sub in a league average streamer, there might’ve been a different outcome.

I’m sure others will point to Roy Halladay or Cliff Lee, or even Dan Haren (yes, I had that schmohawk as well), or some other early round SP who had a negative impact on their teams, but from my vantage point, there is no one more vile to fantasy goodness thand Stoner Lincecum.

Stoner, I wish you nothing but bad luck in your fantasy and real baseball future.

You totally harshed by buzz, Bro.

    Rant over.

    I’m out until next Spring.

@Schmohawks Bob, Thanks. Nice rant! From the outside (not having owned Lincecum), it did look pretty bad.

Thanks for the great write up! It’s really interesting to see the evolution of our team like that. Thanks VinWins for doing all the legwork and making this happen! I can’t wait for next year…

Also…. do we get a free tshirt or something? If so, can we get two since we’re co owners? :)

Echoing Rudy’s sentiments… Congrats on the win, Charley and JungleMike… I once knew a Jungle Jim, any relation? Drop me an email at info @ razzball.com and I’ll get your details for your winnings… Who’s got a Members Only jacket now?!

VinWins is the cogs on this 18-wheeler that is the RCL and does an incredible job, he should get a big virtual man hug and a totally-straight-third base coach booty pat…

@Grey, What Grey said about VinWins – incredible job, which goes far beyond anything Razzball has had before you appeared on the scene. You also did a great job in editing and posting my articles. Thanks for making this great site that much better.

Thanks to Vin and a congrats to Charley and JungleMike- 119 is quite a ridiculous accomplishment!

I’d also like to thank Lincecum for torpedoing the Schmohawks! Just kidding, Bob. Thanks to you and the others in the Original Recipe League for keeping it all interesting…had the season been a week or so longer, you would have won and all your Lincecum-based woes would have been forgotten.

@royce!, And congrats to you for winning 2 RCLs! And without even needing those 2 points earned when SG Sox failed to reach 1000 IP.

@VinWins, Thanks! Didn’t need those two points, but I like the look of 106 a lot more than 104.

Thanks again, Vin! It was my first RCL and it was a lot of fun. Had to get used to the limits settings and so on (or at least that’s my excuse for my 118 finish). Can’t wait now for the Razzball league final standings (I had a lousy last two weeks and am very worried…).

Congrats Rank Railheads on an unbelievable season! And thanks to Vin and everybody else who commished RCL leagues this year.

I realize nobody probably wants to think about the 2013 season now, but if any of the 2012 RCL league winners are interested in playing in a 2013 RCL Champions League, I will be commishing one next year. Shoot me an email (takecareofyourshoes@gmail.com) telling me you are interested as well as which league you played in this year, and you will go on a list and I will contact the first 11 people who email me next year when RCL signup time arrives. If someone doesn’t reply fairly quickly, I will move on down the list until we have 12 confirmed participants. Should be competitive, and that’s the bottom line for me. So let me know if you are interested.

@RandomItalicizedVoice, That is an interesting proposal. I would like to see it go through, and compare your league’s expertise with the ECFBL, which easily outpaced the second most competitive league (One’s are GOOD enough?) by four points, 108 – 104, despite having one manager semi-abandon his team. It would also be interesting to see how Rank Railheads would have done in a considerably more competitive league. In a sense, the REAL champion of this season is Chad Boros, who edged the Living Legend, Chris Hyc, on the least day of the season in the only league that really counts, the ECFBL!

@Paulie Allnuts, I’ll be putting all the league numbers in the RCL forum in the next day or 2, and you’ll see how the ECFBL is really the 5th best league (Hint: think alphabetical).

Thanks Vin for a great season of write-ups and data. I appreciate you sharing my league data so I could really geek out.

Was hoping to finish out in the top 10 overall, but teams I was chasing in my league put up a good last few days. Then I got passed in a category I wasn’t even looking at. Kimchi Tigers had an incredible last day of starters (53.2 innings, 55 Ks, 4 wins, 1.51 ERA and 0.88 WHIP) and passed me in WHIP. Thought I had a shot at 106 and finished with 103. Great fun though, glad I joined this year, thanks again Vin!

Vin, you did an awesome job, as I have stated above. Thanks for all the help that you have given me during the season. You da Best! Of course, the biggest story in all of Razzball land was that Chad of Copales Charros edged Chris, the living legend, of RetroVertigo, on the last day of the season. Chris was seeking his third consecutive RCL championship, his second with the ECFBL, and his first being with “Ones are GOOD enough?”, rated the second most competitive league in Razzball.

    • VinWins

      VinWins says:
      (link)

@Paulie Allnuts, Thanks, again. That was a great finish. I imagine Chris was devastated and will struggle to regain his fantasy prowess, before slipping into oblivion, finishing his career with a third place finish in RCL 57.

Thanks for the roundups, and all the hard work Vin. And a huge thanks for setting up Razz Roto 2 last minute. I really enjoyed my first RCL, it was also my first Roto league ever. Finishing 3rd there, 101st overall, was better than i had expected. I really look forward to next year, i will definitely not wait until the last minute to join an RCL. Amazing job once again Vin!
