But telling me that umps don’t profile hitters that complain is ludicrous. I see Ike Davis muttering expletives when the umps expand the strike-zone on him. The umps’ new attitude with Ike is that if the catcher can actually reach out and catch the ball, it’s a blatant strike. If it bounces by the fungo-circle, it’s a borderline call. If Ike had never exhibited his disdain for lousy calls, he’d be getting a fair shake by now. But since he shows an outward disgust, the umps go out of their way to ring him up on even worse calls than before. You may disagree, but to me this is just an incontrovertible fact.

The other thing that drives me crazy about professional sports officiating is the maddening inconsistency. Last year, on the same exact Sunday, Tony Scheffler was given a fifteen yard penalty for the asinine rule known as “using the ball as a prop” because he stepped on the football like Captain Morgan steps on the treasure chest in the rum commercials. Yet later that day, Dez Bryant used the football as if it were a talcum powder bottle and was shaking the powder into his hands and throwing up the imaginary talc a la LeBron James. Guess what? No penalty. That’s inconsistency and it’s downright maddening to fans and players.

At umpire school, on the first day, the instructor says “Some of you in this room are going to show grace under pressure and exhibit great judgement and keen sensibilities, and you will go on to bigger and better things. And yet some of you will crack and wilt under the enormous pressure….and go on to become Major League umpires.”
