Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

The Pirates announced the time is nigh for Starling Marte.  The Pirates equipment manager, Buffalo Bill, has to start making a uniform made from Jose Tabata’s skin.  Put the lotion in the basket, Tabata!  Tabata, “I wanna go home!”  You won’t go home, ever.  Because you never get on base, that’s the first step to going home.  Tabata, “But I was a spring sleeper!”  They’re slaughtering the spring lambs.  Can’t you hear their screaming?  I call that piece, The Mash-Up of the Lambs.  I’m guessing Marte will get the call just after the All-Star break.  In Triple-A, he’s hitting .284 with 8 homers and 16 steals *quieter voice* and 12 times caught stealing.  So he’s a bit raw like your fava beans.  In Double-A the year before, he had 12 homers and 24 steals *barely above a whisper* and 12 times caught stealing.  But he did hit .332 in Double-A.  I don’t think he’s going to be rosterable off the bat in most mixed leagues, but in keepers and NL-Only leagues, I’d stash him now.  He could get 7-10 homers with 10 steals.  Plus, with his speed and power combo, he could surprise with nice upside.  Now, excuse me, I’m having an old friend for dinner.   Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Garrett Jones – 4-for-5, 3 runs, 4 RBIs and his 11th homer.  Member when he went by Robot Jones?  Eh, maybe I’m showing my age.  Only play him against righties and he has 11 homers and .270+ average in 175 ABs.

Andrew McCutchen – 4-for-5, 3 runs as he returned to the lineup and raised his average to .354.  The monster season continues.  As George Lucas tells his ILM peeps, put the emphasis on the monster.

Neil Walker – 2-for-4, 2 runs, his 5th homer as he bats .400+ over the last week.  This is not as bonkers as eating Bonkers instead of Starburst, but close.  The Pirates are challenging for the best record in the NL.  Or so writes in Pedro from Pittsburgh.

Carl Crawford – Rehab assignment is moving to Double-A Portland.  While up there, he should try the farm-raised chicken that hasn’t eaten anything but soy milk and hazelnuts.  It’s local.

Salvador Perez – 2-for-4, 2 RBIs and his 3rd homer.  Been absolutely smoking balls — that’s what she said! — since he returned.  Now batting .379 with a hit in every game this season.  Where you at, Joe D.?!

Mike Moustakas – 2-for-5, 5 RBIs and his 14th homer.  He’s the biggest thing to happen to the Greek people since Nia Vardalos’s nose.

Jason Bourgeois – 3-for-3 with no steals, but he could get steals until Cain returns and Bourgeois gets Marx’d down.

Billy Butler – 0-for-4, 1 run as the Royals scored 11 runs.  Ticker tease!

Colby Rasmus – 1-for-4 and his 16th homer.  Go up to a complete stranger on the street and hug them, because that’s what Rasmus has been figuratively doing to you for the last two months.

Jose Bautista – 2-for-3 and his 27th homer.  We’re sure those homers aren’t in metric, right?

Ricky Romero – 6 IP, 8 ER and his ERA is now up to 5.35.  Whenever I heard Ricky Romero’s name, I thought of Vicki Vale.  Well, hitters are doing The Batdance all over his face.  Not only is he unstartable, he’s unownable.

Carlos Gomez – 1-for-5 with his 5th homer.  Now has two homers in the last three games.  Just had a great idea.  The Home Run Derby should be limited to hitters with 30 or less homers in their career.  Like you wouldn’t tune in to see the final round between Nick Punto, Carlos Gomez and Michael Bourn.  Plus, then we don’t have to worry about the dreaded Derby curse.  Can even throw in a bonus that on the hitter’s final out, they can try and get an inside the park homer, but all 45 teenaged-contest-winning outfielders play the field.  Imagine the 7 man relay throw home to try to catch Bourn… Will be like Johnny Damon’s in the outfield.

Justin Ruggiano – 2-for-4, 4 RBIs and his 3rd homer as he bats .397.  Also, hitting .500 over the last week.  You know what’s delicious on a hot schmotato?  Some Parmesan Ruggiano.

Will Middlebrooks – Sat out yesterday with a sore hammy.  Betcha they wish they had Youuuuuuuuuk now.  And his .233 average.  Wait, is it up to .234?  .235?  Beast mode!  But, see, this beast mode has a 4.

Mike Trout – Missed yesterday’s game with a jammed finger.  I don’t understand.  There were major league games still played?  But why?

Howie Kendrick – 1-for-3 with a slam & legs.  Wow, did it take Trout sitting out to get Kendrick hot?  Was it cold there in Trout’s shadow?  Is he the Angels’ Barbara Hersey?  Lately, he’s been Otto Hitsswing as he’s hitting near-.400 over the last week and everyone who was left money in his will can’t collect just yet.

Erick Aybar – 2-for-4 and 7 for his last 14.  To paraphrase Meg Ryan talking to Goose, “Hit for me now or I will lose you forever.”  It’s 80’s movie night at Razzball!

Scott Downs – Got his 7th save yesterday.  In 28 IP, he’s given up one run.  The Angels basically have 2 of the top 10 closers in baseball.  Frieri’s the closer.  But Scioscia’s got a terrific bullpen so… Like Ziggy, if you got it, flaunt it.

Joey Votto – Sat out again yesterday with an inflamed knee.  I’d prefer if the fire were lit under his ass and he got back on the field.

Todd Frazier – 3-for-5, 2 runs, 3 RBIs after hitting a homer on Sunday.  This isn’t saying much but he’s been better than Mark Reynolds, and it’s saying something by saying it’s not saying much.  See what I’m saying?

Homer Bailey – 8 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 7 Ks.  I am completely and utterly convinced that Bailey doesn’t even know when he’s going to go out and throw a good game.

Chris Davis – 2-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 2nd homer in his last three games.  Must’ve felt Thome breathing down his neck, which is like being seated next to an overheating lawnmower that is rolling over onions.

Dustin Ackley – 1-for-3 with a slam and legs.  Every 82 games, he’s money!

Brett Anderson – Will throw to live hitters today.  That rules out Adrian Gonzalez.

Brandon Moss – 2-for-3 with his 9th homer and his 2nd in as many games.  I picked him up before I finished writing this blurb.  Fairly well, Adam Lind!

Jeff Samardzija – 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 baserunners, 11 Ks. Some days you get Samardzija, and some days you get some agita.

James Russell – Got the save yesterday because Marmol had worked three days in a row.  Marmol is surprisingly safe right now.  Or as safe as your house after you tell a two strike felon you hide your spare key in a fake rock that reads, “Spare key.”  Has two strikes and there’s not much to steal from you, but the danger is still always looming.

Anthony Rizzo – 2-for-4 and his 2nd homer in the last three games.  From what I learned about irony from Alanis, the Cubs woke up when they caught some Z’s.

Matt Moore – 7 IP, 3 ER, 12 baserunners, 3 Ks.  Wikipedia defines a quality start with this little tidbit, “ESPN.com terms a loss suffered by a pitcher in a quality start as a tough loss and a win earned by a pitcher in a non-quality start a cheap win.”  This Moore win was a quality start but 12 baserunners and 3 Ks may not be cheap, but I think he was using one of those 20% off Bed, Bath and Beyond coupons.

Carlos Pena – 1-for-4 with a homer and his 2nd homer in the last three games.  If this is what passes for a two hole table setter, I must be forked in the head.

Hideki Matsui – Left yesterday’s game with a hamstring injury.  Hopefully you got him out of your weekly lineups (4 years ago).

Yasmani Grandal – 2-for-5 with his 3rd homer.  Honestly (as if I’d lie to you), I don’t even care about the power or that his first name tastes good with chicken tikka masala, but the average is what I’m here for.  To read more on him, see my Yasmani Grandal fantasy.  I wrote it then put it through a Google Smart Person translator.

Alexi Amarista – 3-for-5, 3 RBIs and his 3rd homer in his last 3 games.  The power won’t continue but here’s what I said about him in the past, “Here’s what Bud Black said Scioscia told him, “The first thing (Scioscia) said was this guy can play six positions, he can feel comfortable with them anywhere, he swings the bat and he has some speed, so that versatility plays much better in the National League.”  Right, nothing at all like Maicer Izturis.  With the Padres now having (n)O-Dog, Amarista has been playing 2nd base.  In the minors, he hit for a decent average with speed.  In the majors, I could see him having a .270 average with 25 steals.  Definitely NL-Only grab.  I’d hold for now in most mixed leagues.”  And that’s me quoting me quoting Bud Black quoting Mike Scioscia!

Krispie Young – 1-for-4 with another homer.  I’m happy for him (not really), but he still is hitting .215.  Cust kayin’.  Literally.

Allen Craig – 2 homers as the Rockies decided to bring their pitching on the road trip.

Kyle Lohse – 7 1/3 IP, 2 ER, 11 baserunners, 5 Ks as he lowers his ERA to 2.80.  I’m almost certain Lohse has a tiny ear mic and Dave Duncan’s Cyrano’ing him through these games.

Tyler Colvin -1-for-4 with his 9th homer and over .400 in the last week.  Since I’m currently starting Lind and Reynolds and some other schmohawks, I’m gonna take a flyer on Colvin.  I’m telling you this so you know why he’s cooled off in the next few days.

Wilin Rosario – 2-for-4 with his 14th homer.  Now has 3 homers in the last three games.  ESPN says his poor average and defense could hurt his Rookie of the Year bid.  The news blurb was credited to ESPN’s Guest Columnist, Bryce Harper.

Matt Capps – Perkins got the save yesterday, but Capps hopes to be back with the Twins right after the All-Star Break.  The Twins hope that’s true so right right after the All-Star break they can trade him.

Justin Morneau – 1-for-5, 1 RBI as he bats .238 with 10 homers.  Well, we had a nice April.  *checking stats*  Nah, we didn’t.

Dontrelle Willis – Whatchu talking’ ’bout, Willis?  Retirement.  The flat-billed pitchypusses lost another one.  I’d watch your back, Kris Medlen.  Or bend the bill of your cap.

Think the Nats keep to their innings cap plan on Strasburg even in a playoff race?

Been offered Stras for Tulo, H2H though so need him for the playoffs…thoughts?

    • JTin says:
      (link)

@TheNewGuy, I think it’s likely you’ll see decreased workload over the summer, saving some innings for September. 5-innings start here, skipped turn in the rotation there, etc. If he has even a minor injury send him out for a 2-week vacation.

160 Cap made sense at the start of the season when it looked like the team was playing for 2013; with their rotation + the unexpectedly strong contributions from LaRoche, Desmond, Harper, E-Jax, the time is now. The next time a pennant contending team shuts down their healthy ace mid-stretch-run will be the first.

      • TheNewGuy says:
        (link)

@JTin, Yeah that does make the most sense, but if so, would you do the deal?

I’m thinking no, but I don’t know what im gonna get from Tulo. That said, a red-hot finish from Tulo for my H2H playoffs could make all the difference. Keep him?

I was reading an article on my LA Times app and It said that Brandon Belt was second in all-star voting for 1st base. He might look a little Jewish, thanks Grey, so he could be a back up dancer for 3rd base, but are you F#@&ING KIDDING ME. The internet strikes again, ruining something so pure and wonderful by allowing that too easy to make fun of fan base almost vote Brandon “don’t make me take off my” Belt to the All Star team.

Please correct me if my info is bad, but if it’s not, then someone explain how internet voting is worth keeping in its current form. My buddy suggested that the internet vote be a1/4 of a vote, I say ditch it. Buy a ticket to a game and cast your f*#@ing vote. Get out of your cubicles and off your smart phones and go catch a damn game. I bet anything many of those voters have never even been to a game. Must be going to too many musicals. The messed up thing is those idiots probably don’t realize that the winning team gets home field advantage in the World Series. Hopefully they don’t mess it up for their own team some year.

A great read, as always, Grey! Loving the pirates coverage in today’s column. Too bad Pedro from Pittsburgh was on the bench! #holy sit!

Anyway. NL-only 7 team league (weekly lineups), I have the ATL outfield (Bourn/heyward/prado/Krispie/Allen Craig&/orCraig Allen) to start in 3 OF spots. I deduce that Craig has the greatest trade value and highest probability to get hurt and hang up some goose eggs. Would you trade Craig straight up for your dear sweet Anibal? Or am I selling Craigers too short? He does have an amazing 13HR in 40 gms, but I can’t shake the feeling that he’s a Bennis Carpensheeter of hitters. Lemme know if I’m being hasty.

    1) What does Starling Marte Project out to be? 15/30 type guy with a good avg? In the future.

    2) Would you throw Sale today vs. TEXAS? I’m a little timid, gotta get 32 innings in, i’ve logged 8, i have quite a few options, but is he worthy?

BB,XBH on offense and L and Qs are extra cats on top of the normal ones.

Offense is fine, pitching is really good so no real pressing need. Could use another SP for some depth but not sure Moore is gonna be great this year anyway.

Great read every day – you site appeared to be on the blink yesterday.

Question – Krispie Young – Is he worth picking up?

Would you drop any of these players for him (league number one)?

    Alex Gordon
    Andrew McCutchen
    Desmond Jennings
    Jacoby Ellsbury
    Michael Bourn
    Shin-Soo Choo

I can’t see dropping any of these players (league two)?

    Ryan Braun

  58. Dudley says:

Interesting situation in my H2H where we use Quality Starts instead of Wins. There should be some clever name for this situation.

Cahill had 2 earned and was approaching 100 pitches last night in the 6th. I was hoping he’d make it through 6 to get me the quality start; at that pitch count I didn’t know how long he’d last. He commits an error to let a dude reach first, then plunks the next dude, then gives up a double to let two runs in. But the runners were unearned, I guess. Finishes the inning and still gets the quality start (6 innings, 2 earned). Funny that he committed an error and plunked a dude, but that doesn’t go against his ERA. I’ll take it!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

All ears for a name for that…

      • Dudley says:
        (link)

@Grey, does it have to be intuitive? Two ideas…

Paid the wrong bar tab: when you knowingly get the wrong bar tab, pay it quickly and leave because it’s half of what you really owed. “Cahill paid the wrong bar tab when he gave up four runs but was only charged with two in his six inning outing last night.”

Weezin the Juice has a nice ring to it. “Cahill was caught Weezin the Juice last night when he gave up 4 runs only two earned.” How do you charge a guy for sticking his head under the Icee tap for a couple seconds?! You can’t really price that out. It’s a stretch, but a stretch for a great movie reference.

        • Dudley says:
          (link)

And to clarify – both are kind of dick maneuvers. But that’s the whole point. Getting away with 2 earned was a total dick maneuver!

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Paid the wrong tab isn’t bad, but a little unwieldily… Also, this is a Ticker Shock…

    • Abdoozy says:
      (link)

@Dudley, Just like last week, when Myers came in to close and eventually gave up a slam. Thought he’d lost ERA for me for the week, but learned because there was an error on what should have been the 3rd out, only one of the runs was earned. I wound up winning ERA by .014 and the week 7-5.

Personally I’d like to see Runs Allowed as a category. If you aren’t pitching it shouldn’t be your fault if a guy scores.

      • Dudley says:
        (link)

@Abdoozy, On that last comment – I want to agree with you as I hate when that happens too, but hard to pick a side when the pitcher did let the guys on base who later scored when another dude was pitching. Kind of at least half the guys fault who let them on base, right?

        • Abdoozy says:
          (link)

@Dudley, Yeah, kinda half fault but he gets 100% of the damage.

  59. Alcesto says:

I figure, I’m getting Longoria back after the break, so I put him at 3B, move Cabrera to 1B and Morse to the #3 OF (and drop/trade Stubbs or Rizzo). My thought on Cutch was he’s gonna end the season closer to .300 than .350. And with Haren, Wainwright and A. Sanchez all sucking and blowing at the same time, Verlander anchors the staff.

grey, thinking about making a blockbuster trade in a 10 team h2h keeper league. 10 keepers, 3 must be rd 12 or later. No limit on how many years someone can be kept. sorry in advance for the long post.

im in 4th place right now and looking to make a run at a ring. Mark to market means the guy can be kept based on his 2013 ADP (ADP of 11 is 2nd rd, ADP of 2 is 1st rd, etc). Round means can be kept at the round in parenthesis

    I give
    Matt Kemp (mark to market)
    Paul Goldschmidt (12th rd)
    Jarrod Parker (25th Rd)

    I get
    Adam Jones (mark to market)
    David Ortiz (mark to market)
    Adam Wainwright (mark to market)
    Roy Halladay (mark to market)
    Santiago Casilla (mark to market)
2013 1st available draft pick (likely gets me a josh johnson, yu darvish, hanson type)

    My roster is below
    C- Wilin Rosario
1B- Prince Fielder (keeper mark to market)
2B – Kinsler (keeper mark to market)
    3B- Chris Davis (25th rd)
    SS- Reyes (mark to market)
    CI- Goldschmidt (12th)
    MI – rickie weeks (25th)
    LF- Viciedo (25th)
    CF- Rios (25th)
    RF- Beltran (mark to market)
    Util – Duda (25th)
    Util-Belt
    Bench- Tulo (mark to market)
    DL- Werth (mark to market)
    DL- Longoria (mark to market)
    DL- Kemp (mark to market)

    SP- Stras (mtm)
    SP- Price (mtm)
    SP- Latos (7th)
    SP Anibal (8th)
    SP- Bauer (25th)
    SP – Parker (25th)
    RP – Putz
    RP – Myers
    RP- Clippard
    RP- Parnell
    RP – Marmol
    DL- Morrow (MTM))

I lose Kemp who can be kept for the next 5-10 years as the best player in the game but I get back quite a nice package which could help me win it all plus a solid keeper option in Adam Jones. I can also potentially trade Halladay to someone in the offseason or package him for a better keeper. Do I trade kemp or try to win it all with my current squad? I think the team is competitive considering I’m only 4 games out with all the injuries and just got the Bauer callup. Thanks for the help.

B the dub, I just remembered an incident from when I lived in Baltimore. A buddy and I used to get Boston Market like once a week, and they took your name to announce it on the loudspeaker when your order was ready… so of course we always gave fake names. One day I wasn’t feeling particularly witty and I just said my name was Alf. This enormous black woman behind me gasps and say, “Like the TV show!” I respond, “It’s short for Alfred. What TV show are you talking about?” The woman then proceeds to tell me and my friend her surprisingly accurate, 10-minute long synopsis of the ALF series.

    Timmy’s line tonight..

    3.1 IP, 11 baserunners, 2K, 8 runs, 21.60 ERA, 3.30 WHIP

    I didn’t see a pitch over 88.

Good thing they benched Belt so Lincecum could have his Magic Catcher.

My pitching has gotten horrific and the hits keep coming. Went from a 3.20/1.22 going into June to a 3.80/1.29. I’m lucky I still have some chance to contend. Went with my two start guys this week — Haren, Anibal, Fister and Mcdonald — and so far 3 out of 4 have sucked badly. Not just sucked, but really sucked.

My saving grace is if those three keep pitching like they have the past 5 weeks, they will all lose their rotation spots, and that seems like such an unlikely occurrence. Actually, they could all wind up on the DL.

So Grey, going in to the second half I have the following (4X4, no Ks): Kershaw, Hamels, McDonald, Haren, Anibal, Harrison, Garza, Fister, Holland … do I have any hope? On paper it seems I should be good to go, but in reality this staff sucks big time, worst I have ever had.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

You have hope, but I’m concerned about Haren…

Got an owner interested in Belt. I can play JD Mart and soon Boneface in LF. What kind of pitcher is fair return for Belt, struggling with ERA, K and K/9. Belt could be a keeper for me (keep 7).

    Mcdonald
    Cashner
    Scherzer
    Hughes
    Parker

    or hold

    • Grey

Sure glad I dropped Lind on Friday in a 16 team league and hung on to Reynolds and Belt.

If I had to lose one of these guys, who are you cutting:

    Reynolds, Belt, Worley, Oswalt?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Reynolds

  131. knighttown says:

Want to lean a little toward conservative starts to avoid the poundings that seem to happen in the heat. Feel good about benching Anibal tonight so too toughies tomorrow:

    1. Start Price at home against the Yanks
    2. Start Johnson in Milwaukee after they destroyed Anna Belle

Also, Doug Fister is 8th in MLB for xFIP at 3.17 ahead of guys like Hamels, Kershaw, Price and Verlander. I’m not really sure what that means so…do you like him for a #2 waiver pickup in a 12 team daily league or am I overthinking it?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d wait for a good start from Fister before picking him up… I’d start Price, bench Josh…

  132. Howard says:

And Cashner hurts himself warming up to pitch the 3rd. Let go of a wild one then looked straight to the dugout. One of the MLB Network talkyheads said it looked oblique-ian in nature the way he was walking off the field.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Dammit!

  140. Steve says:

Cashner favouring his elbow apparently. He has a history of arm issues. That Rizzo trade looks better for the Cubs every day…

      Sure didn’t last long…

  141. Slappy Pappy says:

Who should I grab as a Cashner replacement?
    Milone
    Harang
    Travis Wood
    Homer Bailey
    Emoticon

BTW, loved the Portlandia reference, the TWSS, and the damon relay throw in the blurbs.

    • Grey

      Thanks! Milone at home… Wood

      • Slappy Pappy says:

            (link)

@Grey, For reals. But luckily I had Power Bauer going against a weak Padres lineup..what? 6ER? Really. In how many innings? Apparently it doesn’t matter how many different pitches you can throw if they’re all getting hit.

  148. letsgobravos says:
    (link)

Bauer gives up 7 runs, 6 ER in 3.1 to the padres. By my calculations, he would have given up approximately 49 runs against an actual MLB lineup tonight.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Damn… Probably true…

  149. chata says:
    (link)

    hey Grey :

chipper was named to the nl all star squad , by mlb , and replaces kemp .

    here’s a blurb from an article on mlb.com :
“This is not the first time a Final Vote candidate has been plucked from the competition and added to the game as a reserve by MLB. Two years ago, Heath Bell was leading the Majors in saves but was running last on the NL side of the Final Vote, representing the Padres. With less than 24 hours to go, MLB named him an All-Star replacement for injured right-hander Yovani Gallardo of the Brewers.”

question ==> who the heck is mlb ?
    was it selig ?
    was it larussa ??

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I heard… I think it’s ridiculous, but I’m sure casual fans/TV audience will enjoy it… At least makes for some press which MLB is sorely missing…

Frazier or Betemit at 3B in a 16 team league? dropped Frazier for Davis, then Davis for Pedro, then Pedro for Betemit, time to come full circle? Both Davis and Pedro have been picked up since.

      @Ranger Danger, Norris… Try to trade first…

      • Ranger Danger says:

@Grey, Thanks. If no one trades by end of day tomorrow though, I should drop him for Norris’ start on Thursday right?

          Yeah, makes sense…

  158. chunk says:

Drop Cashner for Salvador? Wilin and Grandal were just added today and Napoli has been awful. Daily league, be nice to play matchups and rotate them on days off….

16 team league, no bench hitters, my pitchers are
Weaver, Gio, JZ, Edwin, Burnett, Volquez, Milone, Cashner

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Yeah, go with Sal…

Thanks for the late night service.

recent message from the league I’m dominating:

“Is [chunk's team] playing a different game than the rest of us?”

        Nope, just getting better advice.
