Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

This year we went to 15 teams because Rudy and I had a fight and he hates me and I’m typing this through tears while listening to Peabo Bryson.  Nah, Rudy wanted to draft his own team, separate from me.  Not sure why — *smells armpits*  — can’t be that.  To see Rudy’s mixed league draft breakdown, click that link-a-ma-jiggie.  He goes over the fact that Pianowski drafted no starters and Dalton Del Don (best ‘pert name after yours truly) drafted, like, ten top starters.  It’s probably collusion of some sort, but thinking makes my head hurt, so I’ll just assume they came up with separate strategies, ran said strategies by Funston and Funston nodded very slowly, indicating he either approved Godfather-style or he was on roofies administered by Brad Evans.  These questions are not for me to wonder why, just do or die, or whatever that cliche is.  Anyway, here’s my 15-team Yahoo fantasy baseball team with some thoughts:

C: Jarrod Saltalamacchia (22)
1B: Prince Fielder (1)
2B: Jedd Gyorko (7)
3B: Evan Longoria (2)
SS: Elvis Andrus (5)
CI: Nolan Arenado (10)
MI: Dan Uggla (20)
OF: Alex Rios (3)
OF: Wil Myers (4)
OF: Carl Crawford (13)
OF: Dexter Fowler (16)
UTIL: Mike Moustakas (14)
UTIL: Krispie Young (21)

P: Alex Cobb (6)
P: Julio Teheran (8)
P: Addison Reed (9)
P: Jose Veras (11)
P: Chris Tillman (12)
P: Alex Wood (15)
P: Corey Kluber (17)
P: Taijuan Walker (18)
P: Randall Delgado (19)
Bench: Tyler Skaggs (23)
Bench: Darren O’Day (24)
Bench: Alex Torres (25)

YOU SEE WHAT I’M TWERKING WITH?  MY PITCHING IS BRINGING SEXY BACK

This is the 2nd league in a row I’ve drafted Alex Cobb and Julio Teheran to be my front two.  This time I took Cobb first because he was higher up in Yahoo’s pre-draft rankings.  Rudy likened by pitching staff to Children of the Corn because they’re a bunch of kids wandering out into the corn fields, Ray Kinsella-style.  I’m just gonna name some random pitchers from last year that were all in the top 40 according to our Player RaterJose Fernandez, Madison Bumgarner, Matt Harvey, Shelby Miller, Chris Sale, Teheran, Patrick Corbin, Strasburg, Chris Tillman, Matt Moore and Alex Cobb.  As of October last year, was there a 25 year old in that group?  Not to answer, but to ruminate.  So, Rudy can go ahead with his Jon Lester and Jake Peavy’s, and I’ll go ahead with my sexy mother-SPers.

HEY, GREY, FABULOUS MUSTACHE, BUT IT MIGHT BLOCK YOUR SIGHTLINES, YOU FORGOT TO DRAFT AVERAGE

Yeah, this hitting team is wonky as all-get-out for batting average, if I hold this team.  No one really keeps the guys they draft in the last rounds, unless they fall into a coma immediately after their draft.  Knock on wood, no coma and Krispie Young, Uggla and others probably aren’t long for my team.  The rest of my hitting looks solid for power and speed.  I haven’t drafted Carl Crawford in a few years, but there he was sitting, staring, popping his chewing gum while I was drafting around 200 overall and I figured what the heckfire.  He’ll probably be day-to-day on my team, as in this day I want to drop him, this day I don’t, this day I’m hoping he gets DL’d, this day he’s supposedly healthy but being benched for Ethier.  It should be a fun ride!  Oh, and I drafted Moustakas after I already had two 3rd basemen, because I knew Rudy really wanted him.  Natch!  By the by, I was the one who liked Moustakas first.

BUT, REALLY, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS TEAM?

My goal with this draft was to take players I like.  Someone from Fangraphs remarked during the draft that everyone was sticking pretty close to Yahoo’s pre-draft rankings, except for me.  I was just having fun, drafting guys I’m goofy over.  I grabbed Gyorko thirty spots prior to his draft spot, Longo fifteen spots before his, Moustakas about 50 spots prior to his ADP, Cobb and Teheran 25 or so spots early, Wil Myers 20 spots early, Wood, Arenado, Tillman, Skaggs, Delgado, etc. etc. etc. and so on and so forth.  The only value I got compared to their pre-draft rankings was Andrus, and that was an injury discount because he was nursing a sore arm at the time.  As long as he doesn’t pull a Herbathrowdite, I should be fine.  I will live or die on my rankings, and I don’t plan on disappointing the banner hanging above my desk that reads, “Long Live Grey.”

Dig your squad! Wonder why… maybe cause it looks eerily similar to my 14 teamer. However, by my math. Grey’ 15 teamer > El Burro’s 14 teamer. Think we have 9 of the same players. Mine is a 6×6 (ops/holds) redraft… Our 2 teams sitting in a tree… “its like the perfect combination of sexy and cute” – Cal, Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Yeah – hear ya on Garza. He’s a sickness I can’t quit as my SP4/5. Like him more in NL, obviously than as a Ranger. I’m watching that Taylor Jordan v. Roark battle unfold in Wash. If its Taylor who gets the nod, I like that lad and may add as well…

  4. Alky Sobrera says:
    (link)

Most of my drafts this year, I didn’t drift too far away from site rankings, basically to get “value” out of my picks. One draft I decided to go the route you went in this draft, and just grabbed guys when they were the top options/guys I really wanted and didn’t want to risk losing. It’s such a more fun and fulfilling way to draft, and really opens up the rest of the draft for you. Other guys have no idea what you’re doing (well Rudy probably did), and you end up with a team you love for the players rather than for the value. Definitely a different/more fun way to go, even if only for a draft or two. Anyway a couple of thoughts on your team
    1. Prince over Jones. Was this because you wanted your corners locked in after the first 2 rounds given league size and your longoria target?
    2. Your outfield really didn’t seem to suffer from the above choice.
    3. Been burned by faith in crawford too many times. Blech. Seemed some better/more upsidey options going later. Even better safe/boring options tbh. Very ungrey-y(?) pick from my perspective.
    4. I’m all about the young staff as well, especially given that velo peaks early. Also, KLUBER!!!
    5. I’m a fan of landing high K closers, which tend to be early closers, which I know aren’t your thing. Reed should be solid though, but veras? I get that the RP pool was pretty much empty, but axford was still out there. Feel like a brad miller pick in that round would have made your offense look even sexier.
Overall I think that going off script/using your own went really well for you. You got your guys, and even if they weren’t “values” at the draft, many of them could still outperform their slots. The offense looks stacked, as is your M.O., though the avg really does look wonky (miller over uggla would have helped that). True to form, pitching is also all about upside, outside of the Veras pick which doesn’t instill much confidence. Not one of the top staffs imo, but near top value.
Just my humble opinion. Anyway, good luck with the team Grey, and hope you guys 1-2 this year.

    • James says:
      (link)

      @Alky Sobrera: @Joe G:
You have to think about adp to some degree in most drafts. Yes you were fine if you drafted Goldy in the first last year. Grats, but you could have taken him in the 4th/5th and had another real first rounder. No matter how high you are on a guy, there is a point where it is not worth the risk of reaching.

I am sure part of this is putting your money where your mouth is.

      • Alky Sobrera says:
        (link)

        @James:
I agree James, and for most picks it works out, especially if your ranking differs greatly from the rankings on the site that’s hosting your draft. Again, I’ve done a dozen drafts this year, and in all but one, I stuck to the ADP game to gain what I perceived to be the greatest value, especially for the first 10 or so rounds. For example, I like Pujols more than a 4th rounder, but I still waited for the late 4th to get him because then there’s more room for him to turn a profit, and less room for him to cost me. However, the ADP-squeeze (new name for the strat?!? hah), invariably leads to missing out on some guys you want because of many things. That’s why in 1 draft, I decided to go off the board so to speak after about the 3rd or 4th round. There’s almost no chance that most of my picks return as great a profit as the ones from the ADP-squeeze teams, but it’s the one team where I love every pick from top to bottom. It’s a fun exercise in the draft itself, and it’ll be the team I root for hardest, because it’s filled with only guys I REALLY wanted. So ya, not advocating ditching ADP-squeeze, which would be silly, but if you have enough teams, one draft of this kind can be fun/rewarding/freeing.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Alky Sobrera: 4. Yup! 2. Thanks! 1. Nah, I have Jones elsewhere and wanted to mix it up 5. Gotcha

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Grey: it’s much easier when dealing with other non “perts” (like almost all of the people most of us tend to draft with) to wait up to right near the ADP of guys and still get them, since most of our opponents are likely going off whatever site’s rankings. But when dealing with perts like Grey and Rudy were in their drafts the other perts are i’m sure quite likely to “reach” on guys they believe in as well. So waiting till pick 75 when a guy’s ADP is 82 doesn’t make it as likely to get that guy.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Depends what the room thinks of someone, but agreed

        • agreed. it’s a dangerous game. i find it best not to get my heart set on certain players so i don’t have to reach. i found that the NFBC ADP was a very good proxy for my LABR and KFFL drafts and was able to hold off and get some nice bargains on Masterson (both), Dickerson (LABR), and Brad Miller (KFFL). Same held true for my NFBC draft. This draft definitely veered on SP which led to some adjustment but I felt I was able to adjust appropriately (aside from my 6th round Wacha reach over Rosenthal and probably playing it too cute on RP2). the harder part for me was being near the ‘turn’ at #13 so I had that many more picks between mine to guess at what was going to happen.

        • Alky Sobrera says:
          (link)

          @goodfold2:
Very true. For most of our drafts, sticking in the neighborhood of the ADP leads to the best value. For example, Goldy in the 4th last year in basically every league.
I’d also add that in the small $ leagues, at least the ones I’m in, people are also less likely to “reach” for their guys, because everyone is trying to squeeze out that extra value, and they stick close to site ADPs even when they’re not using said site’s rankings. Can really work to your benefit if you’re vigilant/willing to pay even just a 1 rd/couple of bucks worth of inflation.
I don’t play really big $ leagues, so I can’t speak to those, but I’d assume people would be more willing to veer from ADP based on more personalized/customized rankings.

    • EB says:
      (link)

@Alky Sobrera: @Alky Sobrera: There’s no point in taking someone because someone else likes them. I used to draft that way and my teams stunk and I didn’t have much fun. Now I use the site rankings to plan my draft around which players and positions I expect to be available at certain points in the draft. But when I make a specific pick I could care less how anyone else ranks that player, if that makes sense.

      • Alky Sobrera says:
        (link)

        @EB:
Yup, makes total sense, and I agree completely. That’s my strat for 99% of my drafts, and I honestly believe it has the best chances of any to pay off.

So i did my main league draft last night…12 team H2H Categories are TBs/BBs/R/RBI/SB/AVG/QS/W/L/ERa/Whip/Ks. Min 8 GS per week and TB/BB instead of Hrs, also No SVs or RP are the big differences.

    C Castro
    1B Goldy

    3B Arenado
    SS Segura
    MI Dee Gordon

    OF Holliday
    Util Avisail
    BN Morneau
    BN Aoki

    P Bailey
    P Cole
    P Fister
    P Wacha
    P Liriano
    P Gray
    P Kluber
    P Kazmir
    P Josh Johnson(soon to be DL’d) replace with Delgado/Richards/Erlin/Mejia

Went into draft looking to grab 4 best OPS hitters + Segura then I would go to work on pitchers. I thought there would be more depth at MI that would go undrafted considering the guys in my league usually go by espn rankings…that would mean one of wong/miller ranked outside the top 40 MIs would be on waivers. I put in a trade for harper who i think is going to take hit first month from last year and put in a full 6 months of that. I know youre an advocate of letting your team play, but i really wanted harper.

My Cole/Choo for Harper/Salazaar…my thinking they are pretty much tomato tohmato except Cole wont have an innings cap and is better for QS as he pitches longer in games. I could be trading away this years Matt Harvey, but i could also be trading for this years matt harvey. Anyhow this will be my one long writeup of the year. I apologize and would love any criticism. Thanks again as always, cant wait to see some of the razzball team in Buffalo…already secured my ticket for radio’s 32in32in32!

5×5 yahoo roto league, 12 team. Guy offers Tulo for my Holliday and Frieri. Tulo would be replacing A. Cabrera and the departure of Holliday would leave me a bit short in outfield.

Is this simply too good a deal to pass up? I’m a former disillusioned 2012 Tulo owner so I know I’m a little biased here. Another pert told me to run, not walk to make the deal, but I just wanted to run it by you as the final arbiter.

      @Hunter:
Just a case of being afraid to pull the trigger (I’ve been there). There’s 20 OFs in 12 team FA pools that can provide value. There’s no ascab to tulo upgrade out there to be had. Don’t overthink it. 2 for 1s generally favor the guy getting the 1 stud back.

That’s a compelling argument for freely drafting young pitchers. 11 in the top 40. And I’d imagine that of all the starting pitchers who qualify, less than 25% are under 25 years old. Either way, it’s a good argument for not being afraid of youth.
Thanks for all your fantasy help. You, Rudy, and your people are available almost all the time to answer questions. It’s really amazing. I’m very grateful. I’m relatively poor but I try to send drinks every year to give something back. I wish it could be more. Thanks again!

@Grey: Haha thanks. Baez is actually taking an ‘NA’ spot so doesn’t count against the active roster. Only have Dee Gordon because he’ll be 2B/SS very soon so gives some flexibility in case of injuries (and can partially replace Segura steals if he were to go down). These 15-teamers get so shallow it’s crazy to me. Why are fantasy experts always in 15-teamers if the general public mostly plays 12-teamers?

I like Rudy’s team a little better, with his strong offense and late OF picks.

Your staff does have crazy upside. You might even have another closer soon in O’Day.

So what’s the inside scoop Grey? Rudy still upset about Yadier Molina? Grey still upset about Jean Segura? Are you guys in “conscious uncoupling”???

    • We just haven’t had success recently as a team. Playing on a team is hard even if u agree on most players. Plus, the one advantage you think you’d have – two peeps vs one to snag breaking news players like a new closer – never worked because I am not good at it and Grey ALWAYS added in his RCL team before F&F.

Just drafted in a 10-teamer (I know) and my team actually looks a lot like the one you drafted above. I specifically went for every pitcher you’ve ever loved, but my pitching turned out to look pretty young and unreliable, or as you would call them, sexy-mother-SPers. Am I hurting anywhere?

    Baseball lovers!
How do you think about this small trade?

    I get Morneau
    He gets Yelich

    It’s pending now.

I have got plenty of speedsters, meanwhile feel i need corner infielder since i traded Matt Adams.
I know Morneau can hardly hit over 30 homers for now even though he went to Coors Field.
But i believe there would still be positive things. Could you show me your opinions?

    • Alky Sobrera says:
      (link)

      @Piranhaman:
What’s the wire like? How important is your bench space? I’d strongly consider morneau/someone in a platoon situation. Recent article on fangraphs detailing the benefits of said strategy. Of course, Rudy is kind and brilliant enough to put out platooney tunes, which is invaluable. Use morneau at home and against righties, pair him with another righty masher, and enjoy.

      • The wire is shallower than 12 team. Morneau was drafted. I drafted Morneau late yesterday in our RCL for platoon purposes ( helps the rockies have an extended homestand in early April)

            @J-FOH: Nice!

          • ha on portmorneau. yeah, i have Allan Craig as my CI so I can use Morneau to switch out at 1B/CI/OF/UTIL. just checked Morneau’s player page (http://razzball.com/player/1737/Justin+Morneau/) and can’t believe how awesome his RHP stat line looks (.293/89/29/100 in 650 PA) and that’s with only half his games in Coors. absolute must-start in all leagues at home against a RHP (i imagine $30) and a decent road start against RHP (i imagine $10-$15). Definite sit against LHP – even at home.

    Hey Grey,

Not entirely completely utterly directly related to this post, but I would like to suggest a minor change to the entire site. In short, would it be possible for Razzball to stat noting the positions of players along with their names? I realize there would have to be judgement calls because of different eligibility at different hosting site, but it would be incredibly useful.

Don’t get me wrong, when I read your top 200 rankings, I can pretty much identify the position of every single player, but sometimes I get hazy. (And here’s where I attempt to relate this to the current post). Looking at the team above, I just find it easier to think of the players who are slotted in at positions, and I know the bench . . . right up until Garcia and Baez. I had to go off site to quickly look up their positions and figure out what the heck you’re doing here.

Not expecting any new tricks from an old dog, just thought I’d cry and complain about a website that offers amazing content which I gobble up for free. Oh, and by the way, thanks for that!

10-4 on that, it’s just a little cumbersome. During the grind of the season, there are days when I only have a minute or two to look through Grey’s player notes. If I don’t recognize a name and I don’t have time to click through to the player page, I might miss useful information where I have a positional need to address.

  35. Clint says:
    (link)

That’s one thing I love about Razzball: for the most part, you seem to take an approach of “Draft the guys you like even if it’s not in style at a certain pick & appears a reach” while balancing that nicely with getting value later in drafts in analysis. In my roto draft guys were ripping me for grabbing Rizzo & Adams based on your rankings but as I told them, who cares where you get a guy as long as you’re happy w/your pick & believe in them? Until I found this site, I spent so many fantasy seasons coming out of drafts annoyed with my team because I focused too much on value & didn’t get a team I really liked. Thanks guys!

And on strategy: I heard Cockcroft at ESPN mention a strategy of his was actually to punt average in roto intentionally. Does this hold any water? I could see it in roto but it would be counterproductive in H2H wouldn’t it?

    • Big League Choo says:
      (link)

@Clint: I read that article too…hilarious if you punt avg youre going to do terribly in runs and SBs because guys arent getting on base enough. Even if you win hrs and rbis youre not winning a league with just 2 batting categories.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Clint: I’m sure Rudy would have some strong feelings about punting average… I don’t like drafting for average so I wouldn’t argue… In H2H it means less, not more

    • @Clint: I read Tristan’s article and I thought it was a solid post (http://espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/story/_/page/mlbdk2k14_bastrategy/low-batting-average-players-such-adam-dunn-bj-upton-lots-value-used-correctly).

I think this strategy works best in AL/NL-only leagues (which he seems to be supporting). In 12-team, there really is no reason to do it. In fact, I think it may be the opposite (invest in high AVG) because it is the hardest one for people to keep track of during a draft. It’s easy to know where you stand on HR/SB. Also, and this is a HUGE thing to consider (said in Francesa-voice), there will be cellar-dwellers in your league that take their foot off the accelerator. This makes them easy prey in counting stats. But that doesn’t work as well in rate stats. Nothing’s more frustrating than losing a couple points to abandoned teams b/c of AVG.

I can also speak from experience as my teams last year uniformly sucked at AVG. That wasn’t a conscious punt strategy – more negligence in balancing at the draft. I’ve adjusted this year and think I was able to be above average in that category in all leagues without hurting the other four categories. A poor team AVG might’ve cost me the pennant in RCL last year too.

Grey, I love this team. Would be a good team in a 12-team league, but 15-team? Stellar.

A few questions that are suddenly relevant to my emotional wellbeing over the next 6 months or so:

    1) Kemp returns more value this year than Rios. Right? RIGHT? I know you’re going to say no, but I have a complex and ENTIRELY CONVINCING anti-Rios rant that starts with this: RIOS SUCKS.

Then this: At least if Kemp bombs, he’s injured all year and you can replace him with readily available hot OF of choice. When Rios bombs (which he does; see 2011, NOT THAT I OWNED HIM THAT YEAR OR ANYTHING) he just sits and sucks in your lineup EVERY DAMN DAY. So much suckage. Plus his stats are like an IV drip: 3 HRS a month. Plus as a wise rapper from NYC once said: One man’s ceiling is another man’s floor.

    2) My Grey-Approved ™ pitching staff this year is Cliff Lee, Cole, Cobb, Teheran and Yolanda Ventura, whose real name isn’t Yolanda but he should be called Yolanda because OH THOSE CURVES. So if we’re going down, we’re going down together. Don’t ask why I have Lee; it’s a keeper-league thing.

    3) Wil Myers: Just AL MVP or newly created MLB MVP?

    4) Who is Cory Dickerson and why should I care about him? Drafted him late. Thought he was Corey Patterson, circa 2000, in the minors.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Baron! How goes it, man? We just need BigFatHippo to make an appearance and the gang would all be here…. 1) Rios has been better than Kemp 3 of 4 years years, no? I do agree if you have DL spot, Kemp doens’t hurt as much, but you’re not picking up someone to replace him that is as good as Rios 2) Ha! Nice 3) Newly created MLB MVP 4) Cory Dickerson played one of the high school kids in Dangerous Minds, Corey Dickerson may be a bench player for the Rockies…

      • Baron Von Vulturewins

        Baron Von Vulturewins says:
        (link)

@Grey: [Kneels. Sniffs at the air]

I love the smell of Razzball in the morning.

My choice of Kemp over Rios is long and tortured and not at all rational, but stems from fact that a) at that point my OF was full (Stanton/Holliday/Myers; again, a keeper league thing) so I was essentially drafting a Util/Best Hitter Available; b) I do have a bad history with Rios, both in fantasy and as a Blue Jays fan; c) There is no c. Oh wait, but there’s a d: d) Rios sucks.

Also, I can see even a partially ailing Kemp more or less equaling a well Rios, e.g. .275/80/20/80/20 but there’s no universe in which Rios, well or otherwise, matches even a 3/4 version of healthy Kemp.

          Grey says:
          (link)

Ha… Yeah, I thought I remembered you like the Jays and can see how that’s clouding things… Rios isn’t a good real baseball teammate or player from what I gather, but he’s a safe top 20 OF and has been more often than he hasn’t.

Mike Olt looks pretty decent this Spring, what with a new approach and contact lenses or whatever that has his average up to .280-something. If Olt gets the full-time gig with Chicago, do you go Olt or Asche for the start of the season?

    • mauledbypandas says:
      (link)

@TysonFrozenChicken: I think there is very little chance Olt hits anywhere north of .250

Olt has the power upside, Asche has the avg/counting stats upside.

      I’d lean towards Asche

    Stupid catcher question:

Tweaked Steamer projections have Gattis up by 36 points but ESPN projects Ramos higher by 43 points FWIW. Gattis had an injured quad and slow spring whereas Ramos is healthy.

    HITTERS

    Jonathan Lucroy
    Brandon Moss
    José Altuve
    Ryan Zimmerman
    Jean Segura
    Adam J ones
    Jay Bruce
    Wil Myers

    Doug Fister
    Sonny Gray
    Danny Salazar

Nice team. I especially like the Wood-Kluber-Walker SP picks that late. Good work. Surprised to not see Liriano on there, since you are high on him.

I had my draft in my 12 team 8 x 8 Yahoo keeper League. Holds are a category, 1750 IP limit. I got to keep 10 (about 125 total players got kept). Here’s what I ended up with:

Encarnacion, Kinsler, Bogaerts, Braun, Cargo, Bruce, King Felix, Iwakuma, Wacha, and Cole were my 10 keepers. So, without approx. 125 guys off the board, I drafted Abreu (1), McCann (2), Sandoval (3), Nate Jones (5), Burnett (5) Rajai Davis (6), A.Bradley (6), Smyly (7), Tommy Hunter (8), K.Bryant (9), Carlos Martinez (10) & Cody Allen (11). My last 2 picks (Lackey, Gausman) have since been dropped, and I added Ryan Cook for my 5th RP, and stashed Broxton after Chapman went down in case Hoover bombs. I also used a DL spot to ad & stash Derek Holland for alter this season. The Davis pick is a stopgap — I am loaded with power and trying to recoup some of the SBs I lost by trading away Rios (in a trade for Bruce) and Ellsbury (dealt away with Craig & a draft pick in a trade for CarGo).

@Grey: I had the #1 overall pick in the supplemental draft, and I traded it away to the guy in full-on rebuild mode who was willing to wait it out on Buxton. I got back supplemental picks (overall) #7 (Abreu), McCann (#19) & Sandoval (#25), who will all help me considerably this year. When I made the deal, i thought I might be able to snag Baez at #7, or even 19, but the hype exploded between the week were we declared keepers and held our draft. Baez went #4, but only the team that took him and I weren’t surprised that he went that high. The dude I dealt Buxton to was stunned by the Baez pick. Still, I added some longterm talent at far less cost in Kris Bryant & Archie Bradley, so I’m happy with how trading away the pick worked out. The picks I got replaced the picks I had dealt away in deals to upgrade my keepers.

With CarGomez, Werth and JUp providing some speed, would you drop Villar for Peralta, Owings or Dee Gordon in one league; and with CarGomez, Werth, Adam Jones and DomBrown in the other, would you drop Villar for Asdrubal or Alcides? reason? I’m leaning on keeping latos just because QS is a category in my league. I like Beltran and I’m a huge Yankee fan but does this trade really make sense for my overall team?

What’s your take on Marlins’ Nathan Eovaldi? I drafted him a couple nights ago in my 20 team 5×5 roto yahoo as my 5th starter. Picked him up really late. The guy was almost unranked! I’ve seen some video and his stuff looks nasty. Wondering what you think he will be like for 2014 and possibly the next few years too…i’m considering trying to get him late when we draft our keeper this Saturday…

Grey, you have an amazing mustache. I am in a 10 team 6×6 head-to-head with the normal 5×5 plus OPS and QS. I punted the crap out of RP because W and QS are more valuable than saves, but still got decent relievers late in the draft. Its a keeper league where you lose the pick 2 rounds ahead where you took the player, so I drafted a few young guys.

      Interesting

    • Here’s my machine gun tweets on it. And, yup, that’s my take. Be conscious of the ‘zombies’ at the bottom. AVG the most because you can potentially trade or grind your away ahead in SBs and SVs (though I imagine a number of zombie teams with Billy Hamilton this year…)

        @Rudy Gamble:

Yeah, you don’t twit(tweet? twat? i dunno) often, but when you do, it’s always good stuff.

Do you have a similar graph for the 12 RCL leagues? Curious to overlay them.

        • that was tristan’s graph. it fits what i would’ve expected. biggest disparity should be in R/HR/RBI/K because those are the stats that require active roster manipulation. i would’ve guessed AVG being the lowest in disparity.

          • Kid A says:
            (link)

            @Rudy Gamble:

Yeah, I know it was Cockcroft’s. Was wondering if you had anything similar for the 12 team RCLs. I like visuals. They’re purty.

            • I hear you. Just don’t have the time. Can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t match the 10-team.

On a separate note, how is it that more people play 10 team than 12 team on ESPN?!

              • Kid A says:
                (link)

                @Rudy Gamble:

I assumed it would match the 10 team, just wasn’t sure if there is more activity in RCLs and that would somehow impact certain categories. But I guess, activity is constant regardless of site or league organizer: Quitters Without Borders.

I would guess that ESPN skews more heavily to 10 team, because that is the default setting – and most people are too lazy/ignorant to adjust away from it.

Here’s my team from a league that drafted last week. 12 teams, weekly, H2H pretty standard points league with a minor boost for SBs (also, hitter Ks are -0.5 instead of -1). I don’t know how much that changes things because I’ve never done points before. I ended up drafting 0 RPs because I just need points, and it doesn’t matter where they come from. Since it’s weekly, my strategy was to draft a bunch of pitchers and roll with those who have 2 starts in a week. What are your thoughts? Did I wait too long on pitching?

About Uggla at your MI position.

My spring stats obsession shows me that Uggla K’d 25 times last spring with three walks in just 75 at bats and just 2 HRs.

This spring – and after the eye surgery – he has K’d 17 times in just 50 ABs. BUT – he has walked 11 times and has 4 HRs. – so that’s 2 more homers and 8 more walks in 25 less ABs then last year. It’s the 11 total walks that give me hope maybe something is different with his windmilling. As one who is basically waiting on 2B until…who-the-hell-ever is left…one could do worse than Uggla. If he surprises at your MI position you wiz haz powah!! His spring numbers were certainly a harbinger* last year. Hopefully they are this year too.

I’ve picked him up between 15 and 18 in all of my leagues. 3 RCL included. I’m surprised he’s going so late 16 wins, ERA around 3.65 and a 1.22 WHIP that late in a draft is great value. Why is he going so late ? I’m I missing something ?

: @Big Al: Haha. The 16 wins were nice and he wasn’t even drafted last year, so the investment was minimal for a nice payoff. I’d like him if I thought he was going to take some next step, but he doesn’t have it for me. An ERA/Whip in the 3.70/1.20+ range is stream territory for what I expect out of my staff.

Drafting tonight in 12 tm H2H 6×6 (OPS and QS), 1 win per week league. There’s a 6 pickup/wk limit, so you can reasonably stream 1 roster spot. Every year, 2-3 teams draft a ton of SPs, and while they can present matchup problems they never win it all, they just dilute the pool. I plan on drafting heavily on power, probably punting SB, and focusing on grabbing 5-6 top 40 SPs between rounds 4-15, depending how the room goes. How would you allocate the 5 bench spots? Any bench bats to maximize counting stats, or all SP and MR?

It’s a $100 yahoo pro league, judging by the draft I have huge leg because not one of the drafters had any Razzball influence. case in point Darvish went 4th overall kershaw 6th. which unfortunaely resulted in a slight pitcher run at the end of the second round into the third, so I felt obliged to grab bumgarner with the 11th pick of the third. luckily the next guy took two SPs on the turn and Bruce was there for me. I did miss out Gyorko though.

  100. Deck says:
    (link)

I think one thing that is never taken into account when these rankings are put together is confidence range for the given players forecast. I know you are down on Kemp for example but I grabbed him in the 6th after having an outfield of Cespy, Bautista, and Rios and an open UTIL spot.

My thinking was if he DL’s, whatever, my 6th pick busted. I think plenty of those will bust, but the upside is tremendous.

I got Cano, Bautista, Kemp…and was targeting Pujols too but someone else reached. I also reached a little for Rosario. Basically my strategy is to pick guys I can envision winning an MVP whenever possible because if one or two work out, you just grabbed first round value, while you can ditch the ones that don’t work out.

My question is…as down as you are on Hamilton, Kemp, Sabathia and all of the other proven recently former elites isn’t the upside shot worth more than grabbing Butler, Holliday, Altuve or Trumbo? I mean lets face it, none of those guys will win you your league right?

    • Deck says:
      (link)

@Deck: I shouldn’t say “never” I should maybe say “rarely.”

A straight rankings list is limited because it doesn’t provide you upside and downside deviations.

      • Cram It says:
        (link)

@Deck: You’re talking Kemp who’s in the same draft range as Allen Craig, Heyward, Matt Holliday, Beltran, Ortz, etc. Those guys are pretty solid. Depends if you don’t care about possibly busting out with Kemp. Trumbo’s going to hit 30+ homers easily. That’s nothing to sniff at.

        • Deck says:
          (link)

@Cram It: Heyward busted out, Craig had like 13 dingerz, Beltran and Ortiz are old and injury risks themselves with less upside. I don’t know, outside of Heyward none of those guys have the potential to win you your league IMO, and all of them are relatively replaceable a few rounds later, they won’t make or break you.

I think Chris Carter could be Trumbo and by Chris Carter I mean whichever waiver wire pick up becomes the successful Chris Carter type.

          • Cram It says:
            (link)

@Deck: I guess that’s the debate. If your outfield is set already, a Kemp or Hamilton is worth the shot. I’m not taking one of them as, say, my 2nd or 3rd OF in a 5 OF league. And I’d probably take a top tier SP in the 6th instead if I don’t have one. Depends how your draft goes. I personally don’t think either one will rebound/stay healthy to have an MVP type season you’re hoping. That said, I own Hamilton somewhere, but I paid only $7 for him!

            • Deck says:
              (link)

@Cram It: Well I had Bautista, Rios and Cespy (Keeper) already in a 3 OF league with a UTIL…I think SP is way too deep this year to grab one in the 6th over Kemp. If you don’t get a first tier pitcher you might as well grab Bailey, Teheran, Fister and Liriano and stock your offense. Or at least I hope so because that is what I did.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I try to go over confidence level with tiers in the rankings… Depends on the player, one specifically, no CC isn’t worth any confidence…

      • Deck says:
        (link)

@Grey: CC was listed last for a reason, I guess my point is an MVPotential player at a position that has a ton of waiver depth seems to be a great grab around 70-80 ADP and I’m surprised he has fallen that far.

        • Grey

          Grey says:

My pitching is obviously very young, but I spent heavy on hitting because it seemed like OFs were being sold like Crazy Ed at a used TV sale. As a result, I had to go relatively cheap on most of my pitchers and lost out on closers, who generally were too expensive.

I’ve already put in a waiver claim to drop Gomes for Tommy Hunter (I got him first for a buck after throwing him out at auction figuring someone else would bid, then found I had cash to grab Santana). I figure I’ll need to grab another RP or two as I go along (max 12 starts per week – a rule I didn’t know going into the draft).

Sorry about the monster post, but I’ve been waiting to finish all my drafts before I came in hitch’ya with my teams. I wouldn’t waste your time with non-money leagues, these are all $250 a pop. I made a deal with myself that when I win these leagues I will be “Donating Ties” to my fantasy church/Razzball. If any-“One” is going to LIVE or DIE by your rankings it’s me, check it. reading the book, hope that Petey got stomach cancer or something.

strangely enough, with mean angry, aggressive dogs getting so afraid as they come at you and responding with exactly your own violent aggressive rage often does work. Sort of like they’re human bullies. I actually got out of a dooberman running full bore at me, from out of what appeared to be a locked fence (it wasn’t) in my own neighborhood a few years back; i started to run, then when i realized it was going to catch up to me turned around and just started screaming LOUD obsenities at it (and out of anger actual was ready to hit it as hard as I could). It stopped running and walked back toward it’s own yard/fence.

MadBum/Salazar/Nova/Tillman/Erasmo and Porcello (stream spot) is what im working with and have E5, Rizzo, Middlebrooks/Bogaerts that can all play 1b/3b…options are Wainwright, Sale, Lee, Moore, Kershaw (doubt Hosmer gets me him unless he’s really hurt). Im trusting your rizzo predictions and war room says im at 135% for hr and 120%rbi…im not buying into Moore.
P.S. Ive really screwed myself with being the official tour guide for Nick in stl….. All my league reads this site now so score one for yous’ guys. Not a score for me.

    Cole
    Archer

WWGD????? “What Would Grey Do”? I was leaning towards Burnette but hard to throw any of these guys to the waiver in my mind…but what do i know?

Also, there is a left fileder who will shortly have 3b eligibility in Det. once the season starts and has been hitting the cover off the ball? Smart to pick up Cast???if so who goes?
Any help is always appreciated and will of course beaddedonto the drink total I owe you…

From the files of WTF?: I know razzballers tend to favor Streamer (after Grey of course), and troth be told, so do I, but I saw this the other day and thought it was too strange not to comment on. ZiPS projects Javier Baez to hit 28 home runs in 119 games in 2014, which, again according to ZiPS, would be the most HRs by a Shortstop in 2014. How likely is it that Baez (A) hits this games played projection, and (B) if he does play 119 games, how likely is it that he hits that homer total? How insane would this be?

Here is the short list of middle infidels since 1990 who hit 20+ HR in their rookie year:
    Nomar (1997) 30HRs in 153 games
    Uggla (2006) 27HRs in 154 games
    Tulo (2007) 24HRs in 155 games
    Gyorko (2013) 23 in 125
    Bobby Crosby (2004) 22 in 151
    Espinosa (2011) 21 in 158
    Alexei Ramirez (2008) 21 in 136

Espinosa, Crosby, and Gyorko are the only ones who had an avg. in the neighborhood of Baez’s projection. Uggla hit .282 that year!
I know this list is all over the place, but I’d still like some of whatever ZiPS is smoking?

You’ve uttered the greatest of all heresies, admitting that you drafted a team that you like, as opposed to one filled with players whom you hope take a heater in the ribs. Call it this week’s sign of the coming apocalypse.

By the way, re your reply to me on the last thread, you could have said what you said here re this draft, looking for the range/round of Cobb/Teheran, or just plain targeting them if the round is right. I would suggest that you all do a menage a trois, so have the breakdown as you do by 20s, have the overall rater, and then have a separate item pinned as well, so easier to find, on your targets (and without the blurb material that is in the, by the 20s thingy, and you can include, so no one goes insane, in parens, the earliest round you’d take them, or something like that).

Now well and truly lastly, will there be a memorial service for the donkeycorns? Perhaps after that’s accomplished we can also bury the notion of SAGNOF, since saves do have a face. They can be beauties with eyes that mirror the 1.50 ERA, breasts that resemble a 0.80 WHIP, and a booty of a rear end that resembles a K/9 of 12.00 (when she shakes, she’s off the richter scale). Or could be that gal with a lopsided nose, so a nosERA of 4.00, I-50 breasts for a WHIP, and her rear end is a paltry K/9 of 7.5 (so this latter is flat indeed, both up top and down below)(whereas our 0.80 indicates a roundness in form, her 0s, and the 8 in the middle indicating that she’s double stacked, 0 on top of 0).

          • J-FOH says:
            (link)

@PREz: I don’t love the Cozart/Gordon situation you got going, but that will work itself out. I think Cozart will be better this year since he’s no longer under Dusty’s soul draining leadership. I think Young platoons and if I’m taking a flyer on my 5th OF in a platoon I would want Dickerson, I saw he’s available, and would dump Torres for sizemore. take the flyer and strengthen that 5th OF slot.

            • PREz says:
              (link)

@J-FOH: dude i was in the 20th with no MI… Haha i just got screwed over early so i punted it and was hoping to get villar late but catnip grabbed him. I know its weak but i can manage..

As for grady, if there was one more round i would have got him. Chose to go with carmart with my last pick. I tend to leave the last OF spot open in my draft cuz i know ill be getting a hot one in just the first week. Stream spot..

Overall im not mad at my team, even with my MI lookin middled.. And torres is my rcl fav, so if anyone im not dropping him just yet.

              • J-FOH says:
                (link)

@PREz: I wasn’t saying they were bad picks, I have punted MI almost everywhere, but I meant decide between one or the other, my pick being Gordon for the speed, your HR’s look fine….so I say drop Cozart and play Gordon.

why is Torres your guy? he’s the 7th inning guy with a stud in front of him in the 8th, I would much rather have Brian Wilson, Joe Smith, Heath Bell or Steve Delabar over him,

                • PREz says:
                  (link)

@J-FOH: makes sense but im not all sold on gordon myself. Ill check it out. And torres is a great ratio guy. Most nights hes giving you an inning and a couple k’s, low walks and hits. A sneaky play but im not expecting him to take over at closer. Those guys you mentioned are also good ratio help but ive come to trust torres.

                  • J-FOH says:
                    (link)

@PREz: Delabar is the superior K/9 guy if you want to go that route. I like Wilson for the rogue wins, more likely than San Diego. Smith is very solid and more likely to get a chance to close with Frieri’s wild arm. I’m just trying to help you out.

In regards to Gordon, I think you can drop Cozart because he will still be there later. The SB’s are huge with Gordon, think second best to Hamilton. If you know it’s lefty day for the dodgers you can always stream at MI. I actually did that last year with my MI because of injuries and worked out well. Peralta is also the same as Cozart

                    • PREz says:
                      (link)

@J-FOH: yup right on. And i know gordon is fast foo, but you cant steal first.

Finished my draft last night. In 10-team keeper league w/ OPS & k/9 instead of avg & k’s. Tried to follow your pitching draft strategy advise and not too confident in the outcome. My hitting looks a lot better methinks.

    C Gomes
    1B Encarnacion
    2b Pedroia
    3b Alvarez
    ss E.Cab
    CI Pujols
    MI Gyorko
    OF McCutcheon
    OF Bruce
    OF Cespedes
    U Jennings
    U Belt
Bench: Asche, Arcia, Cain, Avisail, Springer, Taveras, Espinosa
SP: Sanchez, Cobb, Salazar, Cashner, Smyly, Griffin, Erasmo, Skaggs, Odorizzi, Gausman
    RP: Nathan, Soriano, Henderson

My first order of business is to add Porcello for Gausman.
Also considering picking up Delgado for Odorizzi.
    Martin Perez also available.

Regardless, I’m thinking a lot has to happen for this staff to be serviceable for me for the long haul. A healthy Griffin will help a long way. Its a work in progress.

Looking for your thoughts on my team.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d go with Perez… The team looks a little light on speed which isn’t bad in an OPS league… Team looks a little low on K/9 on pitching, but solid team overall…

@tony: Depends on what your pitching and hitting is like, obviously, but in a vacuum I’d say drop Rutledge and Konerko for those two pitchers. If just one, maybe Rutledge for Erasmo.

        @J-FOH:

It’s a 10 teamer. 5 x 5 (whip, era, K, win, saves). We keep 5 year to year ( I know my keepers are not fair):

        C Wieters
        1B Rizzo
        2B Kinsler
        3B Encarcion
        SS H. Ramirez

        UTIL J. Abreu

        Bench Gyorko

        Bench B. Moss

        Pitchers
        P H. Bailey
        P Cobb
        SP A. Sanchez
        SP Masterson
        RP Smyly
        RP Melancon
        Bench Smardzija
        Bench Kluber
        Bench Ventura
        Bench Estrada

I usually add saves when RPs get hurt or get demoted (I added Uherera, Melancon, Benoit and Henderson last season). Thing is all that is left are gambles like Santos, Allen, Clippard, Farqhuar, and O’day.

Alright. I’m gonna go ahead and say it. After much practice…..I’ve finally drafted the ultimate Grey team, at least for a 15 Team league. 15 TM 5X5, 2 C, 4 BE, pick 4. Naturally, ESPN has me finishing dead last, right where I want to be. War Room has me over 100 in every category except saves (which I expect is because it doesn’t take Soria’s new role into account yet). I’m gonna go ahead and say it again: ULTIMATE RAZZBALL TEAM.

    C-D’Arnaud (18)
    C-Zunino (23)
    1B-Au Shizz (1)
    2B–Lil Altuve (6)
    SS-Segura (4)
    3B–Arenado (12)
    CI–Abreu (8)
    MI–Brad Miller (13)
    OF-Bautista (2)
    OF-Bruce (3)
    OF-Gordon (7!!!)
    OF-Brandon Moss (9)
    OF-Bourjos (16)
UT–Fowler (ok, maybe not a PERFECT razzball team, but I got him in round 17)
    SP-Anibal (5)
    SP-Liriano (11)
    SP-Porcello (15)
    SP-Kluber (19)
    SP-M Perez (20)

With a need for arms, would you trade Werth or DomBrown for Iwa?
    Or either for Liriano?
I’ve got Adam Jones and CarGomez as my other OFers.

    Also, is this fair/close?
    Miggy/Carlos Santana/Nova for Crush Davis/Werth/DomBrown
He’s got Swisher at 1B, can slot in Beltre at 3B and Sal Perez at C, and is carrying 12 SPs (Nova was his 27th rounder), with Victorino/Gardner/Markakis/Aoki as his OFers.

    Thanks!

@frankgrimes: are they worse than espn’s?

        @goodfold2: by a long shot….

@PREz: that’s pretty disturbing, i mean , doesn’t espn have pujols like in the mid-50′s or something.

porn ass deep 30 man dynasty league time to extend or not (got till 30th). 100 million budget. All extensions cost 6 million more than current salary but you get those guys for 2 more years (till end of 2016). the guys i’m pretty sure about (and costs).
beltre (franchise tag, it’ll be 18 mil instead of 21 mil that way)
a.escobar (other team’s tag, so 3 mil till end of 2015)
leonys (3.1 million till end of 2016 rookie contract)
    A-Jax (6.4 mil with ext)
    Liriano (11.5 with ext)
    Sale (6.425 with ext)
    erasmo (6.4 with ext)
    m.estrada (6.4 with ext)
Maurer/Fien/D’Arnaud (both .4 mil on rookie contracts till end of 2016)

that ends up being 11 out of 25 active roster spots (damn shame i can’t put maurer down) at a 65.425 mil cost.
pretty sure i should not be extending any of these guys
    machi/h.rondon/a.j.ellis/gillaspie/j.baker/schumaker

i also have 1 restricted tag (i can match any offer, or take pick(s)) and 1 any tag (could be franchise or restrict) left after franchising Beltre (or I could spend an extra 3 mil and have another franchise to use)
this leaves (i’ll show what the cost would be if extended)
    e.santana (17.2 with ext)
    kuroda (16 with ext)
    beltran (19 with ext)
    legares (9 with ext)
    burton (6.75 with ext)
    o’day (7.251 with ext)
    j.johnson (8.625 with ext)
1.with kuroda/e.santana/legares i’m pretty sure to not extend. can likely restrict santana (and hope his bidding is either very low or very high). sound about right?
    2. with beltran 19 is way too much, and i don’t want to franchise and have to pay 15 million either. (could also restrict him and hope bidding goes REALLY high). likely trying to trade him this season too. sound about right?
    3. pretty sure with non-closer RP burton/o’day i’d be silly to pay 7 million for either of those 2?
    4. J.johnson; 8.625 might be enough for closer (problem is i have to guess whether he’s worth that much right now, not after this season) help?

Grey and crew! Muy excited for the new season!
I could really use some help with my rotation though; might have been a little overzealous with the avoid pitchers strategy.
    I have:
    Yordao 251
    Gee 243
    Porcello 279
    Wood 393
    Masterson 303
    Teheran 383
And a couple studs I know I won’t drop (Felix, Balfour, cishek, liriano, masterson, hamels, minor-dl)

    On the wire is:
    Scheppers 256
    Erasmo 250

I’m thinking of dropping Teheran and wood for scheppers and erasmo, but wanted to make sure that these guys weren’t ranked lower because they’re coming up later. Any advice you can give is much preferred. Thank you.
    Also mac innings 1400 and
Pitchers Stat Categories: Wins (W), Complete Games (CG), Saves (SV), Strikeouts (K), Earned Run Average (ERA), (Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched (WHIP), On-base Percentage Against (OBPA), Quality Starts (QS)

@Nomaspantalones: i don’t know what those numbers mean but Grey most certainly has Teheran ranked a lot higher than those other guys. He has Erasmo higher than Wood though.

@goodfold2: false, those numbers are his rankings. That’s why I was thrown off; I know how hot he is on teheran

          @Nomaspantalones: i don’t understand the “false”

Grey, love the team brother! Alos, love the work you do….Best-Site-Ever. I used he same idea for my draft the other night, but I tried to used the ADP alittle to get some value. Against other guys drafting, I was all over the place. I got sniped a few times trying to hold out on someone, but overall I thought the “go for who you want over what the masses say” was more enjoyable. My team looks like this (12 team 6×6 roto…walks/holds)
    c-Mesoraco
    1-Freeman
    2-Wong
    3-Longoria
    s-Simmons
    m-Miller
    c-Hosmer
    of-Trout, Trumbo, Gordon, Aoki
    u-Arenado, Garcia
    b-Calhoun, Arcia
sp-Sanchez, Teheran, Cobb, Gray, Masterson, Kluber, Walker
rp-Uehara, Robertson, Parnell, Siegist, Delabar, Mujica

Olt, Asche, Gennett, Zunino are still on waivers….should I trade out for one of them, or just hold what I got.

@Grey I’ve been offered Anthony Rizzo for Nolan Arenado. Keeper league (turning to dynasty next year). I have Longo at 3B and Posey C/1B and Davis at 1B. I’ve kept Arenado in my ML spot since the beginning of last season (if you don’t remove them after they reach the 150 AB’s they can stay) and I was planning to keep Arenado in the ML until next year so I could essentially have an extra keeper. 9 keepers + 3 ML’s after this season before converting to full dynasty.

Would you take the Rizzo for Arenado deal?

    Appreciate your advice!
