Carl Crawford left yesterday’s game with a sore shoulder. He first felt discomfort on Wednesday. In the locker room, here’s how Carl explained it, “You don’t want to feel that pain like that… I’ve never really had nothing like that before… It locked up real bad.” Now this sounds terrible, right? Okay, here’s how Crawford finished, “I think it should be a day-to-day thing.” Wait, what? You don’t want to feel pain like that… It locked up real bad… It’s fine. Oh, okay. This sounds like when my grandmother would talk about how she can’t see or walk, then she’d go play mah jong. You don’t need to see, the tiles’ engravings are raised. Guess we’ll have to take Crawford’s word for it that this is a minor injury and he’ll only miss a day or two. In the meantime, the Rays called on Joyce to sow Carl’s oats. Matt Joyce had a line of .316/.460/.556 in the minors this year with two homers in the last week. Last year, he had 16 homers and 14 steals in Triple-A. He’d be a very interesting name if the Rays weren’t so stacked. There’s really no way he gets every day ABs unless Crawford goes to the DL. In AL-Only leagues, it’s worth the flyer, but elsewhere I’d wait to see how often he plays. Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:
Psyche! Before we get into today’s roundup, frequent commenter and all-around Razzthusiast, Chase, wanted to share something. Chase, “Two years ago one of my best friends, Joey Rippel, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. At one point he had a tumor that covered half of his chest. Luckily, he recovered after months of chemotherapy. Joey founded a non-profit organization called, The Rippel Effect, to help those like himself. The website is The Rippel Effect and it would be appreciated if you were to check it out and help any way you can.” Anyway II, here’s the roundup:
B.J. Upton – Hit his 7th homer yesterday and has 23 steals on the year while batting .231. In a non-scientific poll I conducted with myself, I get more questions about selling B.J. low than any other player. Grab Aviles for your junky MI spot and together you’d have a .267 average. Not to mention, Upton can raise his average before the year’s over. No one seems to hate Andre Ethier and he has 1 steal. 1 steal and a .231 average are equally bad. Why is it that people hate low average guys? It’s one category. There should be a glossary term for this myopic view of average.
Matt Garza – 8 IP, 3 ER, 6 baserunners, 5 Ks. Best start for him in over a month and a nice bounce back from his last wet noodle start.
Mike Lowell – Heads to the DL. The only Lowell in Massachusetts this year is still 40 minutes NE of Boston.
Dustin Pedroia – 5-for-5, 4 Runs, 5 RBIs, 3 homers. Struck Coors Extra Gold as Massholes everywhere reached for Sammy A.
Huston Street – 1 IP, 2 ER. I’d say Kazaam, but by the time Tracy names him the closer he’s going to be injured again.
Josh Hamilton – 3-for-4 with a steal, after revealing that he sat out on Wednesday with a tight hamstring. I’m waiting for this trade deadline deal… We have breaking news today out of Texas. In a move that could very well push them over the top in this year’s pennant chase, the Rangers purchased 8 hamstrings. The hamstrings are said to be in near-mint condition and will be distributed to Cruz, Kinsler, Hamilton and Vlad. Going the other way in the trade, Matt Treanor. When the guy who sold the hamstrings was asked about what he was going to do with Matt Treanor. He said, “Sell him for parts.”
Will Venable – 2-for-3 with a steal. Was actually going to pick him up for yesterday’s short schedule day, but didn’t. Sonavawaivers!
Everth Cabrera – In a deep league, I got excited that EverCab’s coming off the DL today because I need steals, then about 17 seconds later I remembered it’s EverCab. He’s the Chinese food of middle infielders.
Jesus Feliciano – 3-for-5 with 2 Runs as Jesus filled in for Angel. By Saturday, the Pope will be out in center.
Carlos Beltran – The Mets crack me up. Beltran has been out since like 1964 with this knee injury. Today, the Mets said Beltran could be activated by this Monday. How do you go from not playing for over a year to only rehabbing for four days? Meet the Mets, same as the old mess.
Armando Benitez – But no one can beat the Marlins when it comes to wacky organizations. The Marlins signed Armando Benitez, who hasn’t pitched since 2008. Is this like when Nomar signed a one day deal with the Red Sox so he could retire or is this serious?
Jason Castro – 2-or-3 and his first home run. Let the questions commence about whether you should own Napoli, Suzuki, Santana, Posey, Buck or Castro.
Felipe Paulino – To the 15-day DL with shoulder tendinitis. Why couldn’t the tendinitis gods take Brian Moehler? Wait, this will mean a rotation spot for Bud Norris. Paulino who? Norris is basically the same pitcher. Wild, poor run support and great Ks. NL-Only leagues should grab Norris.
Wandy Rodriguez – 6 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 3 Ks. I’d say it’s nice to see the old Wandwagon back on the tracks, but last year he would’ve K’d 8 guys, not 3.
Austin Jackson – 0-for-4. His average has dropped 75 points in the last month. Where’s all the people who were saying they were naming their firstborn Jackson and moving to Austin when I was saying to sell him? These people always disappear.
Brandon Morrow – 8 IP, 0 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks. I could say he’s in this afternoon’s Buy/Sell, but that would be a lie. If I said he was in a Buy/Sell in May, that would be true. Owned in only 12% of ESPN leagues, which is baffling. Unless you play in a 4×4 league, there’s no reason a guy who has 92 Ks in 84 innings should be on waivers.
Vernon Wells – 2-for-4, 2 homers. I point out a lot of correct calls I make, so it’s only fair I mention that I figured Wells would’ve went back to oblivion or the DL about a month ago. Can’t figure out those 1927 Blue Jays.
Adam Lind – 2-for-4 with his 9th homer. I’m not saying he’s going to do this, but if he hits 7 homers in the next two weeks, which he can, you’ll be glad you were patient with him.
Adam Jones – 3-for-5 and a homer. Sticking with the struggling Adam theme…. Well, actually, this Adam is no longer struggling. He’s hitting almost .450 over the last week with 3 homers. Could still easily reach preseason projections of 27/15.
Matt Cain – 2 2/3 IP, 7 ER. Just rip that ERA Band-Aid off and expose your scabby FIP.
Yovani Gallardo – 9 IP, 0 ER, 5 baserunners, 12 Ks. As usual, I wish I owned him. YoGa, why do you stress me out?
Prince Fielder – 1-for-4 with his 14th homer and his 29th RBI. He now trails Jose Reyes by only one RBI. Fielder’s HR to RBI ratio is almost as obscene as Marmol’s K to IP ratio. Only Fielder’s is the bad kind of obscene. There is a good kind of obscene, right?
Gavin Floyd – 7 IP, 0 ER, 3 baserunners, 9 Ks. He’ll be in this afternoon’s Buy/Sell even if I have to push lip grooming until after it’s written.
Felix Hernandez – 9 IP, 2 ER, 6 baserunners, 8 Ks. As I watched this game, I got the feeling that even if F-Her pitched for 15 innings he wouldn’t get the win. Dismantle the Mariners March 15-30th dynasty!
Ryan Howard – 0-for-3 as the Phillies scored twelve runs. Ticker tease!
Matt Stairs – This has no bearing on anything, but gave me a chuckle. Bud Black said Stairs isn’t ready to return because “he hasn’t been able to run with intensity.” He can drink a beer with intensity. He can grow a mustache with intensity. He can probably take a crap with intensity. If you’re waiting for Stairs to run with intensity, my guess is it will be a long wait.

My first time writing 4rm my iphone.
@Grey: I hope Cruz uzes thoze hammys. Is it me or is Volquez gettin way more hype than dlR? They r essentially the same pitcher this yr xcept the injury difference rite? Still like dlR over Volquez n Jurrjens?
Hopefully I’ll have Morrow on my team shortly via waiver. Somehow I drafted Colby Lewis and had Gio Gonzalez and Brandon Morrow earlier in the year. I shedded them via FA and trades cuz I was worried about WHIP. Now I don’t have any of them but still have Ricky Nolasco and Wandy Rodriguez. And THIS is how not to be first, kids.
myopic view of batting average on guys who contribute in every other category? Sounds like a severe case of Donkey Blindness. Nasty stuff, that!
Would you trade Votto for Josh Johnson or another ace? Pitching staff is Weaver, Dempster, Hamels, Romero, Slowey, Medlen, Nolasco, Arroyo in a deep bench league. Have Ortiz and Quentin on my bench and Teixiera at 1B.
Armando Benitez? Is this a joke? Benitez would pick up 25 straight saves, and be unhittable until the Mets played in a crucial game. Then Kazaam! Haven’t the Mets learned their lesson with injuries and Beltran? When he does come back, I hope that they have the insight to play Pagan over Frenchy. Knowing the Mets, probably not.
Well, if you want to see a player get out of a season long slump, just wait until I cut him. First Wandy, then Adam Jones. Fantasy can be a tough slog at times.
Great work, especially on the Texas Hammy’s.
@Grey: I made some feeler offers for:
F-Her/Wagner for Phillips/Rollins
F-Her/JJ/Wagner for Cano/Fielder
F-Her/JJ/Wagner for Utley/A-Gonz
should I withdraw any of them? any of them too ridiculous?
Should I…
Start Kennedy vs. the Rays or Kershaw vs. the Yankees? I need to start one of ‘em, though I wish I didn’t.
Drop any of the following for Morrow: Kennedy, Price, Sanchez, Lilly? I’m thinking no.
Mention that Lowell is northwest of Boston? Nah. I mean, who cares, right?
Wake my girlfriend up to tell her about Pedroia’s 5-for-5, 3 HR display of hitting mastery? Abso-fuckingsweetjesus-lutely not. But I want to! And really, Razzballers are the only people who might understand that.
Can’t wait until today’s Buy/Sell, so I ask now.
Gavin Floyd is on waivers. Would you drop Clayton Richard or Ian Kennedy for him?
Is now a good time to buy Garza??
I want Adam Jones. My current OF’s are: BJ Upton, Granderson, Guillen, Hart, & Span. What should I offer of these 5 to get Jones??
Thanks
Deals I’ve made:
No brainer success: Hardy for Andrus, on third day of season.
Gutsy Trade of which I am still proud: Got Oswalt/LaRoche for CarGo
Trade I Regret: Sent Headley/Gomes/Pierre for Freese/Stewart
(I regret losing Gomes)
Trade I Made Yesterday that I Love: Gregg for D.Lee/Furcal
@Atherton32: throw hart out there. i think span is too much of a sure thing, and upton/granderson have too much upside to offer for pacman.
@Hardcore Midget: i’d drop richard
Great work as usual. Everyone and their mother knew AJax was a sell high, so don’t go all Berryish on us now.
What can loyal Mets supporters do to prevent Beltran from getting on the field ever again in a Mets uniform?
For those visiting NYC: Don’t buy the “original” tag. The ONLY good Rays pizza is the real original one on Prince Street! The rest are disgusting mockeries of NY pizza…
That said, I got excited in hopes that I’d be reading about a Desmond Jennings call up…
@Grey: Throwing you a curve this morning: Rank the catchers Castro, Hundley, Snyder
ECab or FeLo? Needing speed, I think I know my answer already. Lopez has been dreadful (along with the rest of the Cards O) since I got him. All of the Mendoza scraping AVG but none of the steals of the EverCab.
- Jesus Feliciano: Hahaha
- I’ll be excited about seeing Benitez pitch against the Mets again. In fact I may go buy some tix to see the Fish when they come to town. Oh yeah I forgot to put Benitez in that last of my most hated athletes of all time.
- Beltran back on Monday? Good god. I’ll see it when I believe it. If he’s not starting, I hope for the sake of my fantasy team that they trade Pagan. F Beltran and his mummy knees. Perhaps another Waino curveball will shatter them completely.
- I love Matt Stairs jokes. That one reminded me of the Japanese commercial director telling Bill Murray, “More intensity!” in Lost in Translation.
Similarly, I posted this shortly before I dropped Lance Berkman: “I will trade Lance Berkman for a sandwich. It doesn’t even have to be that good of a sandwich, but it has to be a legit, tangible sandwich, not a sandwich to be named later or cash considerations. “
Morning Grey, Some pitchers on waivers due to come off the DL: Dlr, Volquez, Gonzalez, Madson. Any or all worth picking up? THanks! (I know how you feel about Dlr and Volquez is in the buy/sell right?) I guess the question is are Madson and Gonzalez viable SAGNOF options going forward?
Drop Seth Smith to pick up Pat Burrell?
yeah,im waing on stairs to shore up my sb,s,hehe
Prince Fielder needs to go to Outback and get a big ole fatty steak, inhale that thing and get back to Mashing HR’s…..
He needs some spinach, and not real spinach!
I picked up Morrow for his start against SF, then dropped him for Floyd, who might have had an even better line yesterday: 7 IP, 3 baserunners, 9 K, 1W. I already have Kershaw, Nolasco, Liriano, and other assorted WhipKillers(tm), so I figured I didn’t need Morrow’s high-K, WHIP-explosion, bad-match-ups, blow-up-at-anytime contributions.
I like his longterm upside but right now I don’t trust the Jays, I don’t trust the SkyDome, and I don’t trust those AL East matchups.
I have both Aramis and Beltran poised to come off DL soon(ish). Who to drop to make room:
Pedro Alvarez
Chipper J (temp replacement while Pedro sucks wind)
Mike Stanton
Current Frankensteinian OF: Gardner and the Young Bros (Krispie and Delmon); Lind (benched); Quentin (just added).
I’m still festering in 7th, but I have hope: I think two of Aramis, Beltran, Quentin, or Lind can be very useful going forward. If three of them are, I’ll be golden. Or maybe bronzeian.
Grey: I was chatting with Brian Joura over at Fangraphs and the topic of Ian Stewart came up. The idea of a “shave the stouche to break the Ian Stewart jinx”, was brought up. Would you, and could you, ever shave just to try and break up a slumping player and let me feel relieved to have taken him in every league, even in my 1 team league that is only for Defense.
Any reason to buy a second half rebound for Damon? He can’t really be 44/3/18/.273/5′s worth of bad, but it’s clear that he misses the short porch in Yankee Stadium and the benefit of an all-star lineup. He’s probably available for a bag of balls and a Brien Taylor rookie card though…
I’m hurting in R/AVG/SB (got dragged back to the middle of the pack with Kemp and Werth’s dreckitude over the past month). Thinking about picking up Scotty Pods before I figure out a long-term solution. Any objections?
@sean: I’m in the same slow boat. If he were available in my league, I’d have taken Pod over Damon a while ago. Damon is what he is at this age – and playing Comerica. What makes him a little more valuable to me are his walks since I’m playing with OBP too. I dropped AJax for him a few weeks ago figuring they’ll put up similar numbers with Jax getting more SB and Damon better OBP and probably a little higher AVG by years end. Hey at least he’s still scoring a lot of runs right?
I hate you Adam Jones. I held him all of April & May while he killed my stats. Then I finally dropped him a few weeks ago only to see him get picked up & now he’s on fire. I’m sure I’m not the only one in this boat.
Start Sanchez against Boston? I keep worrying that hes going to pull off a mask and reveal that he’s actually Ollie Perez.
12-team H2H 6×6 (OBP, QS)
Would you start Medlen vs DET and Slowey @NYM??
Pacman or Boesch for the rest of the year in h2h?
Pick one the rest of the way:
Wandy
Correia
Kendrick
Parra
@Chris: Ha! I always say Sanchez is good Oli. Parra too.
@Child Please: Hey did you steal my pitching staff? Same league parameters… I’m throwing both of those guys tonight.
Kemp or Morneau for the rest of the season?
the Pope will be out in center <== funny stuff .
if the Met's version of Tinkers to Evers to Chance turns out to be
the Father , Son , and Holy Ghost ,
maybe they CAN win it all , this year .
Grey,
Jonathon Niese or Jhoulys Chacin?
Thanks
I’m currently overloaded with 7 OFs with JUp, Grandy, C. Lee, Gardner, Borbon, Quentin, Stanton. Thinking of offering C. Lee + Stanton for a pitcher like Hanson, Garza, or Johan, but maybe that’s not enough. Not sure what the market is for Lee or Stanton – prob not much. Any thoughts? I hate having bats on my bench in a H2H.
@big o: Let us pray…
Who to start in my weekly 10 man 5X5?
AJ (with his latest bad starts and ailing Pappy) X2 (LAD, TOR) or Slowey v. Scherz?
Also, do you drop a Wand to pick up a Dickey or a Clippard?
Myopic view of a low batting average = near-slighted.
@steamer: I’m in the same boat with Stanton. I had no need for another OF but couldn’t resist the hype about 2 weeks before he got called up. The guy is getting zero looks in my league. I offered Stanton for Nolasco heads up and it got denied in seconds. So I’m guessing its going to take back-to-back homer nights for Stanton to get any real value.
Looking for starter advice.
Pick 2
Anibal Sanchez
Max Scherzer
Gavin Floyd
Brandon Morrow
Regarding BJ Upton….
Batting average is different than a counting stat like steals. It’s a false analogy. You can get 60 steals from one player (late in the draft) and make up for 3 guys who have 0 steals. But one player can’t make up for 3 guys who hit .230. That player would have to hit .400. It makes no sense to analogize BJ Upton’s .230 average with Andre Ethier’s 1 steal.
I also don’t get this line: “Grab Aviles for your junky MI spot and together you’d have a .267 average.”
Is .267 a good average in your league? It would be DEAD LAST in mine. Plus they’d be averaging: 4.5 homers, 20 RBIs, 36 runs, and 12 steals with the .267 average. That’s the equivalent of two unownable players.
@Chris: I feel you on that one brotha, held Jones forever and then dropped it likes its hot, which is what he proceeded to do! Not learning my lesson I dropped Lind last week after his craptastic April, May, and half-June….so get ready for the Lind-plosion!
@steamer: that prior post was actually meant for you
jason bartlett is available. should i drop ian desmond for him?
buck and castro are both available. should i drop barajas for them?
@mc serch: I guess the positive spin is that although there might be a good chance Pacman does make it to Grey’s season projections in HR/SB, he probably still probably only hits .270 & because Baltimore sucks so bad, he prob doesn’t get more than 75 Runs/RBIs….at least that’s what I’m telling myself.
Two lol’s and a chortle … nice work today.
Your question about low average haters might have been rhetorical but I’ll give it a shot…in any offensive category, other than average, a player can help your team by performing. The only way you get hurt by a player not getting stats is if you expected/projected better performance (see Markakis…but I’m stickin’ with him). For instance, I wouldn’t say that Ethier hurts your team in SB’s so much as he doesn’t help your team in SB’s. A fine distiction, sure…but Grey pointed out Ethier’s lone steal as a detriment to his performance. I only projected him to have 7 this year so if I had him on my team I’d have drafted steals elsewhere. However, a low average pulls down your whole team’s average…it hurts you bad, makes you bleed. If you feel that low average guy’s other categories are worth the hit then good on ya mate…but you will rarely find them on my team. Conversely, I must say many fantasy baseballers (<—Grey's mom's term) place too high an emphasis on BA….hence guys like Ichiro on one extreme and Dunn are, to me, overpriced. Further discussion would be, by me, appreciated.
@tHe sHiT: You’re our first caller. dlR, Volquez… In that order.
@Oregon Nut Cups: Ha!
@xopchipili: Not bad, but we’re already up to our eyeballs in donkey terms. Pun unavoidable.
@Ryan: I wouldn’t.
@Paulie Allnuts: The Mets are funny. … Thanks!
@danimal35: They’re all fair.
@Lines: Ha… I thought my Google map skills pointed NE, oh well. Thought that counts. Kershaw… Hold those pitchers.
@Hardcore Midget: Nope
@Atherton32: What Poon said.
@Real Tom: Eh, Gomes hasn’t done that much lately.
@Brian Lynch: Ha! Okay, but I read every one of these comments and there were people telling me how much they loved Jackson.
@Chris J: Write your councilman.
@3FingersBrown: Catchers in that order. EverCab…. Murray – Ha!
@BSW: Ha!
@Howard: Gonzalez if you need saves. dlR…
@happygostabby: Sure
@AL KOHOLIC: Hehe
@Tony: Ha!
@Baron Von Vulturewins: So you have to drop two? Chipper and Alvarez. Hold Stanton for possible explosion.
@NateMarcum: I’d wax my whole body and shave my head before the stache.
@sean: I wouldn’t bother with Damon.
@Chris: I’m starting him.
@Child Please: Start ‘em.
@LisFranc: Jones
@Mr. Rickey: Wandy…
@Drewsalem Cruiser: Kemp
@big o: Ha!
@CMR: Niese b/c of the park.
@steamer: Don’t think there is a market for those two, but you can try for those SPs.
@Buge Hoobs: Slowey and hold.
@CT Old School: Yeah, feels obvious though.
@Smell The Glove: Floyd, Morrow…
@Pugsly: Assuming you don’t have Lind, Reynolds and Mendoza on your team, you don’t need .400. Aviles alone brought just Upton up to .267. Upton is also above Ethier on ESPN’s Player Rater, so that’s why I used him.
@joey joe joe jr shabadoo: Sure and Castro.
@swpayton: Thanks! A .230 average brings you down. But a .300 guy brings you up. It’s a balancing act.
@Grey:
Super deep 32 team roto league. How do you feel about this trade?
I Trade:
Travis Wood 0.3 P
Adam Dunn 8.0 2010
Nolan Arenado 0.3 P
Johnny Cueto 1.0 3rd
Willy Taveras 1.0 6th
for
Astros Trade:
Brett Gardner 0.5 2nd
Jose Altuve 0.3 P
Barry Zito 5.5 2010+
Koby Clemens 0.3 P
P= prospect.
6th= last year of contract.
2010+ = option for extra year, same contract.
I would get Gardner until 2014 but lose the next 3 years of Cueto.
low avg often corresponds to low spot in order and fewer rbi opportunities, etc. See Adam Lind.
Stuck without a closer so looking at this deal in my 18 teamer:
Give: Polanco/KRod
Give: Prado/Branyan
Is Prado worth more or is that about right?
@Kendry’s Cart Off Grand Slam:
If Gardner is for real, he could be a lead-off fixture (and stud) in the coming years.
That Rangers comment is hilarious. I’m putting in an order for hamstrings futures right now!
People in my 14-team h2h rarely want to trade, so I was surprised to discover a trade offer in my inbox last night. Here’s some background- I have Quentin, Bruce, Stanton, Markakis, Gardner and Abreu for 4 OF and 1 UTIL spot. He offers me Angel Pagan and Ryan Sweeney for Pedroia. No punchline required.
And if anyone’s still reading, keep voting at
http://www.refresheverything.com/synergycentercorporation
It’s steadily moved from I think 61st to 27th over this month. I have no stake in Synergy Center winning; I just love the feeling that my votes have some sort of effect in the world. Also, Synergy Center sounds like a great idea.
This HR change your mind from a few days ago when you told me to hang tight? Drop Jaso for Castro now?
@Kendry’s Cart Off Grand Slam: It’s okay, but are you punting this season?
@mike: Upton led off yesterday and Lind’s been batting third for the entire season.
@artie: I’d take the Polanco side.
@royce!: Ha! Yikes…
@CoreyII: I’d hold for now.
a question for anyone re: studs v. aces.
this is a hypo, not based on any real stats, but i’m newly returned to fantasy baseball and wonder how the pros play the following situation:
you’ve got Pujols on your team; he’s set to face, say… Josh Johnson. You look at BVP and see that for his career, he’s 1 for 18 against him. You don’t have any other 1B’s to fill the slot.
Do you ever sit a stud batter based on his match-up? In the worst case, the only thing that gets hurt is your AVG, but over the course of a season, adjusting your roster to account for bad match-ups may take you up a notch or two in the avg category…
My thinking is that it depends on where you are in the season, and how you stack up in AVG (and the rest of your stats) against the rest of the league. If you’re nearing the end of the season and you are comfortably ahead in HRs, RBIs and runs and in a tight race for AVG, sitting your stud might make sense. If you’re way ahead in AVG, but need other offensive cats, it doesn’t make too much sense.
But what about in July if you are in the middle of the pack on everything offensive?
dint i just see Lind dropped to 6 in the order?
@mike: I think using that much tinkering is over-thinking, and could lead to you missing out on a decent game.
Pujols might have poor career numbers against Johnson, but he’s also Albert friggin Pujols. He could just as easily go 0/4 or go 3/4 with a HR and 4 RBIs on the night.
If it was a fringe player with suspect splits, like say a Kendry Morales, it might be worth benching.
But one 0/4 won’t completely ruin your BA.
my bad, Lind batted 5th, for the first time. Which isn’t that bad a spot in Toronto.
@mike: I agree with TJ. I can’t find any information on this, but I think that a batter has to have had a lot more ABs against anyone to give a true indication of how well they’ll do later. Even with less “stud” batters, if I don’t have anyone to fill in for them and they’re say 1-25 against a pitcher, I’ll still start them.
@Grey: Oh yea i have no shot at this season and am building for the future. I figured Gardner with Votto is a decent starting point.
RoS? Floyd, Morrow, or Kuroda
@Grey:
not that you’re responsible for all things moustache ,
but is fuentes’ barber an argentinian by the name of adolph ?
i know it’s my bad ,
but i’ve had to stop watching
the end of the angels’ games .
the image just keeps getting reinforced .
my reason , for never drafting him again .
Okay, how about this: myopium = you must be high if you see one bad category as a reason to give up on a guy.
Or: cataracattack = the sudden blindness to a player’s overall value based on a single bad category.
If you have BJ in your OF, it is not difficult to get a guy like Prado at 2B to balance them out. BJ’s potential is too good not to use (especially in that lineup), and his steals make up for any lack of production elsewhere. Where’s the downside?
I’m noticing that he has next to zero tradable value because of his AVG though. I find that weird. If I dropped him, he would get picked up with the #1 waiver priority, but I can’t deal him for a bag of shitty weed. We need a name for that kind of guy.
Deep NL keeper – which is the better future closer to stash: Braddock or Demel
@mike:
this amateur wouldn’t sit pujols because he has the ability to contribute in across the board stats .
i will , however , tinker with guys like theriot ,
playing off his chance at a stolen base vs another 0-5 game .
@Kendry’s Cart Off Grand Slam: Then go for it.
@big o: That’s funny, hadn’t noticed. Will be sure to look for it now though.
@Kazmere: Kuroda…
@CT Old School: They’re not bad by any means, the problem I guess I’m having is they’re just telling me you’re being one category blinded. Not average specifically.
@hoju: I agree.
@Mr. Rickey: Demel
@mike: You don’t sit Pujols ever.
You have to take into consideration that BJ Upton is an outfielder. So you have to compare his stats to other outfielders. And if you do, he is a big plus in steals. But he’s a huge minus in batting average. He’s a minus in homers. He’s a minus in RBIs. And he’s average in runs (this year only… in the past he’s been a minus in runs too).
I’m not saying he’s not ownable. But he’s not a guy I would want. Who wants to draft a guy that you instantly have to start balancing out with other players who suck like Mike Aviles?
BJ Upton is like a really hot girl with a decent personality and fairly smart but who has herpes.
Good point. I’ll get back to ya’.
Average Whore, ave-RAGE, beating a dead Mendoza, One Cat to Rule them All.
Hmm this one’s tough
@Pugsly: Aviles was just one example that I used because he’s available everywhere. You can have Holliday, Votto, Braun, etc and you’d be balanced out fine too.
@CT Old School: Cool
@Hank: I don’t mind ave-RAGE, the problem is it’s not really funny.
Guzman Boner
@Pugsly: I fail to see how he’s average in runs this year when he’s tied for 9th among all OFs.
And by the way – you have to balance out every single one of your players, unless you play in a 4 team league.
Right, but those guys are 1st and 2nd round picks. So you’re using a high draft pick (Holliday) to balance out another fairly high pick (Upton), and all you’ve done is get yourself to a mediocre place in terms of batting average. Aren’t you trying to win categories?
I guess we can agree to disagree on Upton. Not on BJs. I like BJs.
16-team H2H 6×6 (OBP, QS)
Would you start Andrew Oliver @ATL????
@Hoju: You’re totally right. He’s not average in runs this year. That was a mistake. But in the past he’s been an 80 run guy.
I agree that you kind of have to balance everyone out. But not to this degree and not for a fairly high pick. I just think it’s more difficult to balance out guys who are terrible in categories like average than in steals.
Hey Grey,
I was just offered Hardy for Crowe in my AL Only league. My middles are a joke and looks like Hardy will be back soon.
Please let me know your opinion. Currently I have Josh Wilson and Cesar Izturis in my SS/MI spot and I have Azzdribble on my reserve.
Thanks,
Spartacus
ReH/AB = working past the devaluation of a guy with a low batting average
AVE-Not = a guy who contributes to all categories but average.
Average Magoo = when you can’t see the overall value of a guy because of his low batting average
would you start c. richard @ FLA?
thanks in advance!
Grey, thinking about making a couple free agent moves. I currently have Uggla at 2nd and Big Papi in a utility spot. This league penalizes strikeouts. Thinking about swapping Uggla for Howie Kendrick and Papi for Aubrey Huff. Either of those worth doing? I could also drop a holds pitcher and pick up either Huff or Kendrick, so if you don’t think I should cut loose ug or pap, which of Huff and Kendrick should I grab?
@Hank: Eh
@Child Please: Sure, but it’s risky.
@Spartacus: I’d take Hardy.
@CT Old School: Average Magoo – nice! I like that. Unless something beats it, I’ll run it by Rudy for final determination.
@bravo: In 12 team or deeper, yeah.
@John Butte: I’d go with Huff over Ortiz.
To paraphrase Navin R. Johnson…
Post 81 – @CT Old School! I’m somebody now! Millions of people look at this blog everyday! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity – your name in print – that makes people. I’m in print! Things are going to start happening to me now.
@grey- clayton richard or morrow in a league that counts W, L, K, ERA, WHIP,K/bb?
@CT Old School: Ha! Nice reference.
@Martin: Morrow
Which side would you rather have for the rest of this year? For next?
Lester/Swisher
or
D.Price/Butler
Dunn-derhead, in honor of the poster child for this kind of prejudice, Adam Dunn.
“I can’t trade B. Upton for bupkis since my leaguemates are such Dunn-derheads about him.”
@Grey: Got 4 OF’s, need 2 sit 1: Pacman, Robot, Boesch, Cruz. What say you sir?
Say Aaron Siegheilman continues to be iffy, who does AZ turn to first: Juan G or Demel?
Keeper league, 12 team ESPN standard 5×5.
I’ve had Aroldis Chapman stashed for a coupla months now. But now it looks like he’s gonna come up as a reliever, and probably not as a closer – at least not right away. God knows when they are going to bring him up, period. He’s not developing much control.
I’m wondering if I should cut him for Hellickson. Or Brett Wallace (my 1Bs are Ike and Aubrey). Or Desmond Jennings? I’ve also got too many OF’s: Delmon Young, Ludwick, Lind, Gardner, Holliday, Ichiro, Ibanez, Boesch and Nava.
For pitchers, I’ve got Clay B., Hughes, Liriano, Romero, Bumgarner, Valverde, Heilman, and Aardsma.
I’m 5th in the league (after a miserable May, I’m having an outstanding June) and the top 3 get paid.
Keep Chapman stashed? Drop him for Hellickson? Jennings? Wallace?
@SayWhat: Lester’s this year, Price’s next year.
@GrandSlamSingle: Hehe, it’s not bad. Don’t think it beats your leaguemates are average Magoos.
@tHe ShiT: Sit Robot if he’s against a lefty. Don’t know the opposing pitchers for all of them off the top of my head.
@Brad Fullmer’s Quads: Demel
@mike: Hold Chapman for now.
@Grey: Sorry dude, shoulda posted the matchups.
Robot v Sheets
Boesch v Medlen
Pacman v JD Martin
Cruz v Moehler
On the topic of BJ, I think part of what complicates the matter is that only a handful of guys can offer his number of stolen bases. It ends up making him seem really valuable. All his other categories are really pretty bad, except runs this year. In general I tend to let the chips fall as they may with steals and not worry about getting any of the super stealers. It seems most of the time there is some dude in every league who covets steals and drafts two of the monsters to run away with the league. Everyone else tends to have regular makeup, say a 20 steal guy maybe two, a few 10-15s, and the rest who end up with ~7. In the end its a fairly tight race. I tend to opt towards picking up 3 twenty steal guys. In general I think going after a category with one guy that really only helps there is not a good idea. I guess I like balanced players more than balancing my team. Also I hate steals as a category.
@Grey: Or maybe sit Prince v Rowland-Smith or Butler v Suppan?
Submission for people who stupidly dismiss bc of a bad Batting Average: LowBAtomites
@tHe ShiT: Sitting Pacman… Honestly, they’re all good matchups. It’s a coin flip.
@Brad Fullmer’s Quads: Not feeling that.
Hi, I have Rod Barajas at C and will be dropping him this are my options:
Jaso
Pyersinsky
The Molinas
Olivo
Hundley
Buck
TASTE THE SAD MICHAEL!
I could also trade for Posey but the owner wants too much
Its a points league
Thanks
I was offered Billingsley and Daisuke for Johan Santana?
Should I take it?
@Grey: Yeah i know dude. I hate these decisions. Did u just close ur eyes and point on the screen?
B.A. Ba-righteous?
@Grey: My team has been top 3 in 10-team h2h for most of the season despite having Grady, Nelson, Jimmy, Wandy, Pena, and Lind (Grady and Wandy got the boot). Team’s been slumping hard recently, particularly in R, AVG, and SB. Cruz and Rollins are back now but i doubt i can ask for much on the basepaths going fwd.
Should I drop Jose Lopez, Delmon Young, or Borbon for Adam Jones, Juan Pierre, or Coghlan? (my other OF is your boy Rios). Also, I picked up Medlen for Wandy…do you think he actually turns it around and if so should i scoop him back up? Thanks!
@SpiralArchitect: Negative, Dice-K sucks. Try 2 get a decent bat in addition if u really want Bills.
@alvaro: Olivo
@SpiralArchitect: I’d take Johan.
@tHe ShiT: Closed my eyes and picked a name out of my mustache.
@Bring Back Pluto: Not feeling that.
@Grey: Awesome, ur stache-must have some serious volume then…
@Grey: I’ve managed to stay around 3rd place in my 10-team h2h league despite having to deal with Grady, Jimmy, Nelson, Wandy, Pena, and Lind (gave Grady, Wandy the boot). Been slumping hard as of late, particularly in R, SB, and AVG.
Should I drop Jose Lopez, Borbon, or Delmon for Adam Jones, Pierre, or Coghlan? (my other OF is your boy Rios). Thanks!
@Grey:
Ouch, Grey. shot down in seconds!
Bring Back Pluto: Good evening. And good night.
Other Razz Commentor: Yow! Not even a ‘heh’.
Bring Back Pluto: Grey just don’t like me.
Other Razz Commentor: To say the least.
Bring Back Pluto: My face is just too wide.
Other Razz Commentor: Yeah, and my hairline can’t be helping, either.
Bring Back Pluto: I’d be hurt and disappointed if it didn’t happen so often.
Other Razz Commentor: So true.
AVE-a-tard?
If you don’t like it just ignore me, turn your back, and start talking to your friends. Actually hearing I’m undesirable brings a single tear to mine eye.
@Dubs: Lopez for Jones. Go with Medlen.
@tHe ShiT: It’s bushy, no doubt.
@Bring Back Pluto: Shake it off, man.
@Brad Fullmer’s Quads: It’s not bad. Rudy and I discussing right now.
@Grey: Also, Montero’s been hot and plays for a better team than the Black Magic Rookie, although I know you’ve ranked Santana over MM in past posts. Why shouldn’t I drop Santana for Montero? Thanks again.
@Blownitez’s Barnacles: You can, it’s apples and apples.
Someone just dropped Jason Bay in our league. Is it a must that I pick him up? I would have to drop Lind, Swisher or Pence.
@Derrick: Who are you dropping there? Guess Lind, but I like his upside better.
Care to rate this group of OF’s? Pence, Quintin, A. Jones and Swisher.
@Mike: Pence, Jones, Quentin…
@CT Old School: So Rudy and I were thinking about calling average loving owners: TJ Laverage – Guys who think only high average guys ‘kill’ it.
You might be the only one that gets the reference.
Probably trying to hard at this point, but I’m on a mission!
Average Jacking (too much will make you go blind)
Hit Happy
1 Tool Owner
@Hank: Eh…
Or how about these owners are all JibBA-JabBA’ing.
@Grey: Is that a Real World/Road Rule Challenge reference?
@Hank: Yeah, hehe.
@Hank: How about B.A. Barnacle?
Cain or Latos? I’m after Latos.
@Nuke LaDouche: I’d take Latos.
Prospecting for saves out of Lyon, Perez or League
@Ken Plane: I think League’s the best bet, followed by Lyon.
@Ken Plane: League…
******THERE’S A NEW POST FOR FOLLOWUPS.*******
Need an OF going forward: Bautista, D. Young, or Borbon?
@Black Beard: Young…
******THERE’S A NEW POST FOR FOLLOWUPS.*******
I haven’t commented in a while, but I just wanted to point out that Chipper Jones has more SBs than HRs. It just totally shocked the hell out of me.
@Grey: It’s aight.
BA Washed
BAd Romance
Trippin BAlls
Not sure what to do with Lind. With Adam Jones out there on the wire, do you drop Lind for Jones?
If I need Saves, is trading Bautista for Papelbon a good deal? I think it is a steal…
