Hey fatlester -
Thanks for the question.

First off, I think Dontrelle Willis is a better pitcher than Joel Piniero. But in 2007, he most certainly was worse.

Here are the stats:

Piniero: 97.2 IP of 7 W / 5 L / 0 SV / 4.33 ERA / 1.40 WHIP / 60 K / 14 HR allowed

Willis: 205.1 IP of 10 W / 15 L / 0 SV / 5.17 ERA / 1.60 WHIP / 146 K / 29 HR allowed

From a general FLB perspective, it is Willis' 205 innings and high ERA/WHIP that made him one of the least valuable performers. To show you the impact, if the rest of our team had 1000 IP at 3.50/1.25, adding Willis would bump your team ratios to 3.79/1.31.

From the Razzball perspective, Willis' high ERA/WHIP are slightly less invaluable than his top 10 MLB numbers in Losses and HR allowed.

I had mentioned in the article that for a player to be truly invaluable, they need poor performance and opportunity. If any team in 2008 gives Pineiro the opportunity to throw 200 IP (ahem, Tony Larussa), I think he could be a Razzball star...

Let us know if you have any other questions...

Rudy

First off, I think Dontrelle Willis is a better pitcher than Joel Piniero. But in 2007, he most certainly was worse.

Here are the stats:

Piniero: 97.2 IP of 7 W / 5 L / 0 SV / 4.33 ERA / 1.40 WHIP / 60 K / 14 HR allowed

Willis: 205.1 IP of 10 W / 15 L / 0 SV / 5.17 ERA / 1.60 WHIP / 146 K / 29 HR allowed

From a general FLB perspective, it is Willis’ 205 innings and high ERA/WHIP that made him one of the least valuable performers. To show you the impact, if the rest of our team had 1000 IP at 3.50/1.25, adding Willis would bump your team ratios to 3.79/1.31.

From the Razzball perspective, Willis’ high ERA/WHIP are slightly less invaluable than his top 10 MLB numbers in Losses and HR allowed.

I had mentioned in the article that for a player to be truly invaluable, they need poor performance and opportunity. If any team in 2008 gives Pineiro the opportunity to throw 200 IP (ahem, Tony Larussa), I think he could be a Razzball star…

Stan,

I've read most of your posts from the past few months I agree with you on most everything you say baseball-related. However, I cannot understand how you can claim with a straight face that Dontrelle Willis is a worse pitcher than Joel Pineiro.

I'm not doubting your reasoning, but I'd love to know your rationale.
