Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

In one article about Mike Stanton in The Miami Herald, a longtime season ticket holder, Fran, was asked if any player every matched Stanton’s sheer mollywhopping, pony sticking ability.  The gist is no.  Fran, at 85, had seen them all too.  About Randy Johnson, Fran was quoted as saying, “Wild as any turkey ever got to be.  He had that hair, and when he pitched and got sweaty, he had the nastiest head of hair you ever seen.”  Now if I worked as a reporter for The Miami Herald, I’d make sure I had at least one quote from Fran in every article.  If I could somehow find someone to match her quotey-ness, I’d say the quote was “frantastic.”  If another reporter asked me to read their piece and they lacked a Fran quote, I’d say it’s not franny enough.  Can we get a interview with Fran?  Or should I just call up any retirement home in Miami-Dade County and interview anyone I get on the phone about the Marlins prospects?  Mrs. Abramowitz, “Can Maybin turn it around?”  “I’ve seen potato pancakes bigger than him.  Put some apple sauce on his head and he’ll fall over.”  /Fran aside.

So, I have big love for Stanton (<–cable TV pun!), and I think he should be picked up in all leagues immediately.  Between Cody Ross, Coghlan and Maybin, the Marlins have no reason to keep Stanton down any longer.  He should be up in the next few weeks.  When he arrives, he’ll be good for power and maybe not much else.  He could be a drag on average.  Here’s what I said back in November, “In Single-A, he hit 39 homers while slashing .293/.381/.611.  There’s light tower power in his man-frame of 6’5″, 210 lbs. (for those in San Diego, that’s 3 and a half David Ecksteins, but only three-quarters of a Kyle Blanks.  Or Blanks sans afro.).  Last year, Stanton continued his assault on minor league pitching in High-A, then hit his first roadblock at Double-A.  Unable to make the necessary adjustments, he saw the one part of his game that was exploitable exploited.  He’s a hacker.  Even when he hit the 39 homers in 125 games in A, he struck out 153 times.  Last year, he K’d 99 times in 79 Double-A games, which led to .231/.311/.455.”  And that’s me quoting me!  Since then, i.e., this year, he’s hit the ball wilder than any turkey Fran’s ever saw.  When he gets called up in June, think a line of 15-20 homers and a .255 average.  The hype alone makes him rosterable.  If you have him, I believe his hype will make it worth trading him in non-keeper leagues.  Anyway, here’s some more players to buy or sell this week in fantasy baseball:

BUY

Scott Olsen – He gets the Rockies his next time out in Coors, which isn’t a start I’d want any part of, but then he gets the O’s, Giants and Astros, three clubs that punted hitting this year.

Derek Holland – I think he’ll be a matchups guy for certain stretches of the season.  Read:  When he’s at home.  Potatoes to chips, I’d still own him because he’s D-Nice with the Ks.

John Ely – Weird that this guy seems completely off everyone’s radar.  He has a 17:3 K:BB rate and he gets the Astros next time out.  That’s Lov-Ely.

Johnny Cueto – Sure, his name sounds like a bully from an 80’s movie and he treated you as such his first month, but he has a 33:12 K:BB and a 1.21 WHIP with three straight solid starts.  Cueto won’t hurt you… As long as you’re not a dork!

Randy Wells – I know it’s weird for you to go after a pitcher who hasn’t pitched that well so far.  This is a trust exercise.  Just fall back, Wells will catch you.

Troy Glaus – Hitting .400 over the last week with 2 homers.  He got so hot it was a Glaussian blur!  What?  Terrible?  Yeah, probably.

Luke Scott – ROTIOAOWAYSETWOASPAYOWTWH!

Travis Snider – Member why you drafted him in March?  Yeah, none of that has changed, he just started slow.  Still plenty of time for him to breakout.  Or not.  But it’s worth the chance on upside.

Michael Saunders – Maybe because his last name sounds like he likes to walk leisurely, but I’m finding it hard to build enthusiasm about Saunders.  Is he rosterable in deep leagues?  Yeppers.  Is he better than a poor man’s FraGu?  Not on your Mom Mom’s life.

Alfredo Simon – You know the douche that updates his Facebook page whenever he has something to brag about?  Yeah, well, I’m going to post about how I picked Alfredo Simon up in a fantasy league.  Take that, douche who just got a new job!

Jose Contreras – Yes, it’s saves.  I’m just worried that after you’re done with him you’re going to have a screwvenir of an unsightly ERA and WHIP.

Manny Corpas – No better than Contreras, only 47 years younger.

John Buck – One catcher I’m mentioning this week.  McCann + V-Mart + Mauer is less than Buck’s power so far.  Ain’t that a kick in the pants?

SELL

Gordon Beckham – Every time I watch him at the plate, I feel like some depressing David Gray song should be playing in the background.  It’s like every lemming in the world has Beckham on their team.  Even if he rights the ship, what are you going to get? 14/10?  I just popped a zit and it gave me more satisfaction.  Lose him, it’s time to move on.

Kyle Blanks – It’s time to start making some tough choices.  Blanks seems like a good guy.  It’s well documented that he can carry around 17 cookie elves in the palm of his hand.  But his strikeouts right now?  A taco diarrhea mess.  You get power off waivers elsewhere.  That’s a command, Lieutenant.

Jason Kubel – We’re cleaning house today, huh?  In the rankings, I said, “Kubel had value when he was a last round draft pick.  There’s no value when you have to draft him like he’s actually going to stay on your team.  Trust me, he won’t.”  And that’s me anticipating you dropping Kubel!

Starlin Castro – Whatchu talkin’ about, Grey?!  You just told us to pick him up!  Yeah, and now I’m telling you like Yoda would that the hype is too strong in him.  Now don’t trade him for a set of gold fronts, but I’d definitely see what I could get.  Say Asdrubal and a donkeycorn?  You’re coming out on top of that.  And tell’m Grey sent ya!  Though that might just confuse them.

What do you see happening with Griffey and Bradley? That’s going to determine Saunders’ fate more than anything this season, right?

So far, everything I’ve read has Saunders platooning with Langerhans until Bradley gets back.

@Terrence Mann: Griffey’s donezo. Not worried about him. Bradley will wrench up Saunders playing time.

I think its a nice heart warming story that an old middle reliever could reincarnate his career as a young, power hitting out fielder. That’s what I call one upping Ankiel.

I have him stashed in my keeper league, but he would have to hit damn well to earn one of my 5 keeper slots for next year. We’ll see!

Any point to picking up Glaus when I have morneau/zimmerman/morales/vlad occupying CI/util spots? Even though Morneau was a keeper the idea of selling high on him w/ the injury risk, and the hot hitting Glaus available is appealing. Of course, Glaus is even less reliable than Morneau.

@Grey thanks, what I thought. I can’t help but think of potential moves, but after looking at overall H2H total stats, I need to let the season play itself out. My overall stats > my H2H record, so it should normalize if I don’t keep screwing my team up!

in H2H non hold leagues, do you ever use setup guys to get a few extra K and lower ERA/whip? If so who would you want first, Zumaya Bard or Gregerson.

  13. and1mcgee says:

grey, please compare Derek Jeter and Elvis Andrus from here on out.

do your projections remain true of:

    Jeter: 110 16 70 0.315 20
    Andrus: 80 8 50 0.270 37

it seems like Andrus could steal more than 40 even. what do you think?

  15. Tony says:
    (link)

@BKK ya i’m sure he’s been shooting you nothing but crap, he overvalues his players big time…. he wanted carlos gonzalez and heath bell for Kershaw, and this was the day or two AFTER he got bombed for 8 runs! Just because you take a guy in the 5th or 6th round doesn’t mean you’re getting that PLUS back if he’s not performing…. market value….. he said he was getting RIPPED if it was cargo for kershaw straight up, haha, i thought it was fair? he doesn’t assess needs very well, he wanted my SS and 3B but was giving me another 1B when i already own Howard and Votto?

  16. Bin says:

  17. Grey

    @Martin: I’d take Garza.

@Howard: Lose Gio for Olsen, but can’t start him vs. Rockies.

@Back to Minors: Depends on matchups but I’d take Kennedy.

@Jon: Thanks for the heads up!

@Bodymore: I use MR guys when I can, but they’re the first ones gone when I need to do a pickup. Gregerson…

@and1mcgee: Projections seem okay, but Andrus has more upside and downside. All along I was saying Andrus could be the old Reyes this year. It’s possible.

not sure whose around but somebody tell me…. ya think my trading weaver and tejada for jacoby ellsbury and ivan rodriguez was a good move?we only give 1 point for steals so keep that in mind and i think my pitching was good enough to let him go. i managed to pickup off the wire… capps, moyer, livan herbnandez, and doug fister….i drafted [bell was a keeper for a dollar].also. phil hughes [thanks razzball!] oswalt, david price, marmol and papelbond. relievers score the same as sp for us except for cg shout outs etc….so theres 11 out of our top 30 scorers that are rp. and my capps is 5 and bell is 9! ivan was just in case martin crashed and burned….hes doing great this week though!

oh and somebody telll me adam jones and adam lind will be ok…ive had em on the bench for awhile! so happy im finally getting rollins back….gonna play him this coming week if news looks promising….good move?

    A. Offer him straight up for any of the above;
    B. Offer him and someone like Ike Davis for any of the above (I have Glaus, Smoak, Dunn, Cantu who can all play 1B); or
    C. Not offer him at all, because I would be, in effect, punting saves?

does this all seem ok? boesh has produced good scores for 3 weeks in a row! also kinda a fillin till ellsbury lind and jones come around….

    heres my lineup…

russel, butler, utley ,wright, and rollins[if good news] and the outfield.. boesh, hunter, and werth…and.. elvis and scuturo are dh[dh can be anyone]

  33. Grey

    Grey says:

    @dingers: Sure

@Ryan Beariot: I maintained all offseason Panda doesn’t have power but he has average. He will hit for average, but he’s not more than a 20 home run hitter.

    @Dingo: Ha!

@Wilsonian: Depends who you’re getting in A. For Upton, Choo, Bruce, etc. on the hitters, sure. You can always get closers, don’t punt.

@chiasports: Yeah, looks fine. Not crazy about bench hitters, so you can work on trading some extra hitters.

    @Rnunnerley: Eh

@Baron Von Vulturewins: Random Outfielder That Is On And Off Waivers All Year So Every Team Will Own At Some Point And You Only Want Them When Hot.

  34. William says:

@Grey – My OF consists of Jason Bay, Matt Kemp, Curtis Granderson, Carlos Quentin, and Alfonso Soriano…

  39. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

@Grey: Thanks. And I wouldn’t technically be punting saves completely. I would always be looking on the WW for someone who vultures them or a replacement. I think I’m going to open the bidding at BJ-Up, although I do like Choo, it’s a keeper league and I’m always afraid the Korean military is going to snag him up any minute.

    russel,butler,utley ,wright, and rollins…
    outfield lind,werth,ellsbury…dh adam jones,tori hunter

then my bench is …scuturo ,elvis, boesh, and ivan rod… elvis id like to keep around for a possible keeper? the guy who dropped him[for castro] actually drafted him for 4 dollars…that means then i can keep him for 4 even though i picked him up…hoping elvis tears it up!!

    near future lineup…
    russel,butler,utley ,wright, and rollins…
    outfield lind,werth,ellsbury…dh adam jones,tori hunter

jones could be the one? hes really sucked!@
right now ..elvis boesh and scuturo are replacing jones lind and rollins

Yesterday, I asked if I should sit any of my pitchers in a (40 innings minimum) H2H league. You asked why am I sitting anyone? The answer is because it’s weirdo league where K/9, Ks, W, L, S, and WHIP are all pitching categories.

I got a solid 23 innings out of F-Her, Latos and Verlander. I’m definitely starting Lester later in the week, but any advice for these other schmos? I’ve already got a nice lead on ERA and WHIP, but the strike categories are still close.

    Buchholtz @DET
    Garland – LAD
    Leake – STL
    Duchsherer – not sure.

Do you like Stanton better than Smoak? They would only occasionally play my 1 UTIL spot (Reynolds @ 1B, Holiday/Upton/Kemp @ OF).

    Or is it a “Eh…”?

  85. @Grey:

I just grabby grabbed Ely last night when I saw he had the Astros up next. Astros matchups…yes please may I have another?

  86. Wilsonian says:

Holding onto Leblanc still or think his hot streak is over? I read he wasn’t rated much as a prospect and had been performing over his head, but he has Petco going for him at least.

I’m stashing Slowey still but its possible his screwed wrist = him screwed for 2010.

I wanna open up a spot for Gregerson and will need to clear room for Furcal (though might be cutting a bench OFer for him)

  93. @Wilsonian:

Yeah just whatever you can afford mate.

@Bring Back Pluto: i also was wondering… maybe cuz he’s not good?

  98. Wilsonian says:

  99. Dr. Orlando Schadenfreude says:
    (link)

    @dsimon: I’ve got Baker benched.

  100. @Grey:

One more thing…why so much tepidation towards Contreras…sure he’s not a proven closer and hes old as dirt, but a he’s got a shot at closing for the top team in the NL and his xFIP is 1.83. Maybe he just fits well in the pen?

  101. mookiewilson says:

@Bring Back Pluto: Garrett Jones is actually a robot that was programmed to hit HRs. Unfortunately the Pirates have tweaked the program in order to make him suck like the rest of the team.

  102. Donnie Baseball says:

@Bring Back Pluto: Pertains to Asminov’s rules of robots, what Mookie said and…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whatever_Happened_to_Robot_Jones%3F

In the end, it’s just really convoluted.

    @William: Last…

@Elijah: It’s in less than 12 innings. He gives up 4 runs in his next outing none of his numbers will look good.

    @and1mcgee: Nolasco, Liriano…

  106. and1mcgee says:

  107. Art Vandelay says:

Can I drop McLouth yet for the love of god? I have been holding and holding him – along with Adam Jones and Jason Bay – while my outfield dies a slow and painful death. Would you drop McLouth for Stanton?

  108. Howie Met Your Mother says:
    (link)

    @Grey:

So my only two weak positions are C and 2B. I have Suzkui, Napoli, and Carlos Santana, G-Beckam, Jose Lopez for that mess. I also have Fausto Carmona who I rarely play. Who would you be playing out of that mess? Am I wrong for loving Santana so much? Who’s first out if Aroldis Chapman is available?

Last question for the day, I promise!

  109. DavidSouter says:

@Art Vandelay I dropped him three weeks ago in a 14-team league with three utility spots and nobody has picked him up, so there’s your answer.

@Art Vandelay: Are you going to play Stanton while he’s not in the majors? If so, then eh. If he’s just being benched, then go for it.

@Howie Met Your Mother: Is this a one catcher league? I wouldn’t hold two, let alone 3. Look at Wieters last year and this year for what you should expect from Santana.

@Grey: OR, What kind of bat + Castro would get Liriano? Guy is already ditching his team for keepers and picks. He’s got Champan, Strasburg, Ike Davis, Smoak, Stanton. He’s praying to the god’s his prospects pan out.

  117. @penpen:

Yeah its still the point in the season where a slumping guy can suddenly get back to respectable production with one huge game.

    @timSTi: what an idiot.com

  119. timSTi says:

@Grey: Quick rundown: Doumit, Pujols, Phillips, Aviles, Youk, Castro, Stewart, RobotJones, Cruz, Kemp, Pence, Bruce, Wigginton, Glaus, Drew, F.Lewis.

He said he’d give a SS + Liriano for Castro. Is that an auto accept? Might try to pry Headley + Liriano for Drew + Castro. Hows that sound?

Or should I aim higher for Carpenter?

  126. Nathan says:

@timSTi: But wait, Lois… We could take the boat. Or we could take the mystery box! There could be anything in there! Even a boat!

  129. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @timSTi: The Drew trade works.

  130. Nathan says:
    (link)

@and1mcgee: I’ve always wanted there to be a sportscaster with some sort of ear deformity.

Then all you’d have to do is get Stuart Scott, Strahan, and the earless guy together and you’d have a really good Sisters of Fate Greek Mythology joke.

  131. timSTi says:
    (link)

@Grey: I think that’d work as well. Might try this offer first. Youk + Castro for Headley + Carpenter.

Headley could take 3rd. And I still have Aviles/Rollins for SS. Also have Glaus and Stewart who could play 3b.

    So which is better:

    A) Drew + Castro for Liriano + Headley

    B) Youk + Castro for Carpenter + Headley

    Thanks as always.

  132. Nathan says:
    (link)

@timSTi: I like (A) better. If you’re gonna try and rip a guy off, you might as well do it properly and not actually give up anything of value. Why take on the injurry risk of Carpenter and give up a solid hitter in Youks when Liriano looks for real?

  133. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

Nice day for Robot to finally show up. First, I’m playing against him in one league where our offensive categories were real close. And second, I’m a Cubs fan. Bad day to lose on “Press Your Luck.” I feel like those little Whammies are running all over my computer screen right now.

  134. timSTi says:

I’m excited for you. I hope to god this is a money league.

  138. Nathan says:

@Oregon Nut Cups: I don’t get it. Why does Robot get all these shout-outs for a single? McCutchen just hit a bomb, not Robot.

Howdy, Grey. I was wondering what your end of season projections are for Beckham at this point. I have him for dirt cheap in an AL-Only keeper league, so it’s not like I can really drop him. It looks like I’m going to be in contention all season(thanks Razzball!) and want to know if he could potentially hurt my chances. Also, when he was promoted last year and was playing well, I TOTALLY bragged on Facebook about getting him so cheap.

@Oregon Nut Cups: Yeah, sorry. Reactionary. I’m far more excited about McCutchen than Robot. Of coruse, I own McCutchen and not Robot.

But I think we can all agree that starting Gorz was a terrible idea.

  146. timSTi says:

Speaking of Markakis, what is his deal? All of his peripheral numbers are near, at or above his 2007 and 2008 numbers except for his HR/FB % which is waaaaaay down at like 5%. That says he’s due for a power rebound of some kind, doesn’t it?

  150. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @timSTi: Nicely done.

    @NukeLaDouche: Upton…

    Jhoulys, Leake, Bailey, Maine

    Who to start?

  154. NukeLaDouche says:
    (link)

Yeah I was kind of leaning that way. Upton’s average is just so bad though. The panda is in a funk but overall he is a good hitter. He won’t put up great numbers in anything but I always figure at least he has the chance to continuously contribute. Upton can carry steals but since he treats getting to first base like it will reward him with a herpes outbreak he can’t really get the steals I covet. Covet!

  155. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@TonyCino: Wagner and Lee down would work for you.

@BigFatHippo: Wallace has better eligibility, but Stanton’s hit more homers in the last two weeks than Wallace has in any season. Though I’m sure there will be a post about him at some point.

  170. mauledbypandas says:
    (link)

@royce!: I can’t tell you how mad I am at myself. I was going to bench Cecil because I don’t like watching my team (Rangers) vs a pitcher i own in fantasy. Long story short, I didn’t have time to bench him and things are getting very ugly in Toronto. Take that Hamels Slowey and Kershaw, CECIL SMASH WHIP AND ERA!!!

  171. royce! says:
    (link)

@mauledbypandas: You’ve got a better excuse than I do…I saw that ESPN ranked him like #20 of all the SP today and I checked Texas’s hitting v. lefties (sub .700) so I actually reasoned my way into thinking that I was waaaaay smarter than ESPN.

Of course, they had Harden ranked really high, so whatever.

  172. mauledbypandas says:
    (link)

@royce!: ugh, Harden just can’t throw a strike tonight. The upside here for me is the Rangers are winning. The downside is my ERA and WHIP have been absolutely destroyed by Cecil.

  212. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:
    (link)

@Grey: Seriously… I’ve never done less than a 12-Teamer before this year, but could only scrape together 9 friends for this league. I owned the auction draft (as you can guess from those players), but it’s just not challenging or interesting. When my lineup is on, it’s a blowout… when they’re off (like this week), it’s as frustrating as backseat dry hump. If it’s only 10-Team again next year, I’m adding three more roster spots (IF, UTIL, P) and maybe another bench spot to make it more interesting.

Regarding Stanton… if it gets close to call-up time and he’s still available, I’ll might waive Ibanez for him and take a few days to a week of zeroes from UTIL. We’ll see.

  213. Niq Castro says:
    (link)

@Bill Lumbergh: Absolutely! I’d say Kuroda is significantly more valuable. Better hurry before whoever you are trading sees Cecil’s line tonight…

  214. Niq Castro says:
    (link)

@Awesomus Maximus: If you really want Stanton, how about a trade 2-1 trade? You seem to have a plethora of closeurs (poseur closers? ploseurs?) – of course i have no idea how many closers your opponents have, so this might not work at all.

I.e., a closer and maybe Ibanez for a guy you can plug in at Util – then you can pick up the universal man crush named Stanton.

  215. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:
    (link)

@mauledbypandas: @royce!: @Niq Castro: See my previous comment for some info, but basically it came down to this being the first year of a “friend league” and me over-estimating my friends’ ability to plan properly. There was all sorts of trash talking before the draft, everyone claiming they had strategies and had done their homework, then two teams never got into the draft (auto-draft in an auction is bad news) and two other guys never even bothered to do a single mock.

I ended up with Pujols for $35, Hanley for $31 and Wright for $24 right off the bat… not trying to own any of them, just trying to push up the bidding. Kemp at $30 and Miggy at $28 I was trying for. Once the tentative bidders jumped in, they spent like crazy… $40 for A-Rod, $36 for Prince, $35 for Mauer/Teixeira/Howard each, to name a few (not all bad prices, but considering where Pujols and Hanley set the bar…). That just allowed me to get ridiculous prices elsewhere (Phillips at $14, Josh Johnson/Nolasco at $11 each, Marmol/Price at $2 each). Halladay/Kinsler came in a trade where I gave up Wright/Kershaw. Grady I traded Bruce straight up for (jury’s still out on that one).

  216. Awesomus Maximus

    Awesomus Maximus says:

@Niq Castro: I’m not desperate to get Stanton. My post was more of a “challenge” to Grey’s “he should be picked up in all leagues immediately” statement. Looking at their averages against the opposing pitchers, should I start Torri Hunter against Duchscherer of the A’s (even though he is coming of the DL tomorrow to pitch, Hunter’s average against him is nothing to get excited over), or Johnny Damon against Jon Lester (who also doesn’t have an incredible average against Lester) when Lester has heated up after a bumpy start?

Not a lot of choice for me besides those two right now, even though trades are the goal when available.

Also I read a comment that Grey posted earlier to a question like mine: do I allow Kershaw to start today (Saturday) with his history so far this season, even though he did very well his last outing? Or do I bench him for the safety of my team? I need what he can bring, but he can also bring disaster.

    3. R. Zimmerman

    for

    1. Tex
    2. Strasburg

JJ, MK and RZ are all reasonably priced (and thus, keepers for the other guy) and Tex is, well, NOT reasonably priced. However, Stras is cheap and signable for the next 3-5 years.

Of these players, which one you SELL to make room for another pitcher to be competitive in the H2H league? Candidates: Quentin, Smoak, Krispie Young. I could also try to trade Slumpy Zobrist for a pitcher, but he’s on the table, too. I’ve got Morneau at 1B, and Smoak is my backup, so I’m kind of leaning toward the worst OF, all other things equal.

    I give: Halladay and Hamels

    I get: Longoria

Somehow with trades he ended up with 3 third basemen, so he needs to trade one of them. I’ve got a strong pitching staff. Is the trade fair for both sides or should I be giving a pitcher better than Hamels?

Should I trade Cain and A. Chapman for Wandy and Broxton? I get saves (good for my current needs), but give up the next two years of having access to the unproven Chapman cheap in a keeper league.

I guess boiled down… does Chapman’s upside trump the instability that currently is Wandy enough to keep Chapman and punt saves for the season?

  278. Terrence Mann says:

@GopherDay: I think if you just removed Hamels from the deal altogether, it would be a better trade for your friend.

  279. Bodymore says:

@eddy it happens, I had him benched for his 3/4 the other day. Adam Jones seems to be heating up, his at bats look much better, not swinging at the outside and waiting on pitches, going the opposite way, he’s getting hits… hopefully the power comes now. Think of the positive, even though the stats didn’t count, what does count is the improved likelyhood that he goes back to his all star form.

  280. Bodymore says:
    (link)

Just thinking about Posada and wondering if any co-owners have thoughts. He is DHing today after being benched yesterday. I think he’s probably still hurting some which is why he couldn’t catch 3 days in a row, and Cervelli has been playing good D and getting on base. I don’t want to carry 2 catchers and am worried the limited playing time is going to hurt in H2H. I would have to see more evidence of reduced playing time but is it out of line to be thinking about dropping him for Olivo, Napoli, Jaso…

  281. Donnie Baseball says:

Blalock called up, Burrell designated for assignment.

  282. @Grey: Yeah slim pickin’s. A lot of streaming going on – Olson and Maine were both snagged for todays starts for example. I am going to see what our respective pitchers do today. I’ve got 5 starts left to his 2 (he has Leeke on the bench right now so maybe 1), so I’ll hold off on a move until tonight if I do make one.

I’ve had it with Buerhle though. I’d rather stream than deal with this abominable bag of puss. I think I’ll go with Ely next week and then play it by ear. I was hoping that Buerhle’s numbers would improve as his schedule gets easier, but it seemed like 7 good innings against KC was too much to ask.

  283. Grey

    Grey says:

    @Eddy: Ha!

@GopherDay: Just Halladay is fair. Hamels too is too much.

    @Joe B: Hold pat.

@Howie: I think I got it the first time. As I look at it Cain and Wandy are a wash and Broxton is saves vs. the upside of Aroldis. I don’t make the trade, but go for it if you think it works for you. If I needed saves, I’d trade a smaller piece for a lesser closer.

@Donnie Baseball: Thanks for the heads up!

  289. Grey

@Buge Hoobs: You’re not winning your league with either, but I’d take Alexei.

@Grey: Thanks for rubbing it in.

  291. timSTi says:
    (link)

@Grey: So last minute my Wiggy + Castro for Carpenter trade got canceled. Guess he came to his senses slightly. He countered with Carpenter for Castro + Kershaw. Thats too much in a 7 Keeper league right? I have Rollins, but Kershaw + Nolasco are my top SPs.

  292. timSTi says:
    (link)

@timSTi: Or, what if I get him to throw in Headley.

    My Castro + Kershaw

    His Carpenter + Headley

  293. @Grey: I know that’s what makes me so hesitant to drop him. He’s seen a lot of success for a long time and he’s not that old. If I’m not mistaken I believe he’s got more win than anyone since 2001. In light of that and how bad the ChiSox have been as whole, you have to think things will improve.

  294. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

@Buge Hoobs: Sorry, didn’t mean to be callous.

@timSTi: I’d take the Headley one.

@3FingersBrown: Depends on how deep the league is, but in my 15 team league, I dropped him a month ago.

  295. timSTi says:
    (link)

@Grey: Last question pertaining to this trade I promise. In a 10 teamer with 7 keepers who you can keep for however long you want. Rank these guys for this year and beyond:

    Carpenter, Kershaw, Castro, Headley, Liriano.

    Is that order about right?

  296. Grey

    Grey says:

@timSTi: Kershaw, Carp, Liriano, Headley… There’s a fall off between Carp and Liriano.

Hey Grey, does it seem to you like Ibanez is showing signs of life? He had a great May last year. Worth a pick up? I could drop a middle reliever and pick him up, or drop Quentin for him. Better supporting cast than Q…

  299. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

I asked a question about this deal yesterday, where the guy said he wanted a closer in a 16 Team H2H, keeper (can keep them forever, no worries about draft status, etc.). I originally offered FrankCord for BJ but I renegged on it after I realized that BJ has been in a 4 for 43 head up rectum slide lately. So I offered him FrankCord and Glaus for Lind and Snider. Is this a fair trade? Am I attempting to rip him off? Just wondering if I should offer him something else. I have a collection of first basemen, and I would be willing to toss in Ike instead of Glaus. But I need some serious OF help. Much appreciated.

  300. Grey

    Grey says:

@Wilsonian: I would’ve took Upton… The other trade is fair if he’ll take it.

  301. Wilsonian says:
    (link)

@Grey: Thanks. I’ll leave that one out there. He’s a friend that I graduated law school with, so we’re pretty friendly with trades in this league (as in we try to be pretty fair and everyone is pretty knowledgeable), but I figured I’d see what the master thought of the offers. Thanks again for your help. This site has become my Bible…

  302. Nick0rz says:

In my RCL I’m currently projecting to have about 210 SB, if everything continues as is. My top 3 base stealers are Gardner, Span, and B.J Upton. I’m also doing horribly in HR’s and RBI, sitting 9th and 10th in those respectively. Would you try and sell high on Gardner or trade B.J?

  303. Euroalien says:
    (link)

Thanks Grey. All those guys are available…….. it just costs me $1 for every transaction. So while I need HRs and RBIs, I want to make the smart move. :) I have Ike Davis & Fukudome active and Wood and Fowler on my bench……… would you drop any of them to get one or more of these guys going forward Fred Lewis, Gaby Sanchez, Michael Saunders, Jeremy Hermida, Luke Scott, Brennan Boesch, Austin Kearns.

    Thanks – appreciate the advoice

  304. Two hole says:

In a 20-team H2H I have Wigginton at 2B and Hinske at 3B. I’m thinking of dropping Hinske for a minor-leaguer or a player who could become eligible:

Brett Wallace, Alex Gordon, Chris Davis, Carlos Guillen (2B?), Hank Blalock (3B?).

    Anyone here worth owning?

  305. Grey

    Grey says:
    (link)

    @Wilsonian: No problem…

@Nick0rz: They’re pretty similar, sell whichever one gets you more. I’d probably try and trade Upton. Say for Lind…

@Euroalien: I’d drop Ike and Fukudome for Kearns and Scott, but you will need to drop them too in about a week or two when they go cold. So if you’re willing to rotate through OFs, then go for it, but these aren’t fixes for the long term.

  306. Grey

  308. @Grey: 15 team mixed OBP instead of AVG. With Yunny back I have to drop a guy. I’m hurting for power but have a lot of speed and good pitching. Drop Maybin, Brignac, Beckham or Scherzer?

Posada just made a strong argument against replacing him with someone who will get more playing time. I think it is safe to say he’ll get enough at bats between C and DH to produce enough on a week by week basis to be helpful in H2H (though i think his rating would go up in a rotisserie league).

Zimmerman is on some kind of evil hot streak right now. So glad to have him in a keeper league…

@Ryan I’m a big fan of Ian stewart but I would jump at the chance to turn billingsley into adam wainwright at that cost.

  314. @Grey: Dropped Scherzer. He’s just been god awful and his velocity is way down. Let him be someone else’s problem.

  315. DrEasy says:

Pfew, Dotel gave me fits but he gets out of a jam and comes up with the save.

  316. Ryan Beariot says:
    (link)

@Bodymore: I have Castro and Wainwright, I just wanted to make sure I’m not getting fleeced out of Wainwright. As I’m leading in most of the pitching cats, I figure I can take a hit, I just want to make sure it’s not a huge hit.

  317. Bodymore says:
    (link)

@Ryan One thing I’ve learned is not to count your chickens before they hatch. Wainwright is one of the more stable reliable SP, a position with a very high attrition rate. I love Ian Stewart and am glad I drafted him, but I’d want someone with more of a track record if I was giving up Wainwright. Billingsley is a pretty big step down, I wouldn’t want to own him, which is why I traded him away. Anyway that is just my opinion, on the other hand I expect Ian Stewart to produce all season and if you’re pitching is that stacked, it might be worth it.

He’s good friends with a lot of guys at the Q, including some of the bigger boys in the organization and knows Dan Gilbert personally. My uncle has been told that Delonte has been banging Gloria James (Lebron’s Mom) for some time now. Somehow Lebron found out before game four and it destroyed their chemistry and divided the team. I am not making this up, I wish it wasn’t true but it happened. .” With Delonte West’s checkered past, LeBron can be none too pleased with his teammate and good friend hanging with his Mother… The Cavs definitely looked like a different squad from game 4 on..especially LeBron…coincidence, or did this really just happen? Maybe this is the reason LeBron’s leaving Cleveland..

They’re two of the streakiest hitters in baseball, right?

Thanks, G. You had to know, what with that WHIP, that Simon was going to implode sooner rather than later. Today was that day. Lucky for him and you, Diamond Dave T loves himself a good Walter Mitty story (and never mind winning).

Otherwise love me some Boesch. But to hedge my bet, to use your word, I’ll be dropping some schmohawk so that I can pick up Guillen and put him on the DL. Then add schomohawk part deux. You can figure out what happens to schmohawk part deux when Guillen comes off the DL. And, Lord, I never ever ask for much. But I’m asking now. So in addition to world peace, no more poverty, can you kindly make it so that ole Carlos stays healthy, as he’d be fantasy heaven on earth in the MI slot.

Big Papi’s available and looking very tempting. Here’s the schmohawks I could drop for him:

    – Ibanez (whom I drafted way too high),
    – Glaus (picked him earlier this week, hoping to ride the hot hand just like Papi),
    – Aviles (also have Tejada, they seem tomahto-tomato to me, but Tejada has better job security)
    – Simon (had the meltdown, but SAGNOF!)

    What do you guys think?

Considering I have McGehee on 3rd today and he is facing a pitcher like Cole Hamels, would it be worth considering swapping him out for David Freese (who is on my bench) for the more favorable matchup?

Also, for my outfield and utility today I have:
    M. Holliday
    J. Heyward (scares me because he is up against Haren today…)
    T. Hunter
    Util: M. Byrd

and Johnny Damon is on my bench…Since Damon is facing Lackey today, should I sub him in for one of the other outfielders/utility spots to make best use of the matchup? Any advice on all this? Thanks everybody…

Just trying to find something at Fangraphs that might explain why he’s been a virtual non-contributor thus far (not to mention something that hints at an upturn).

  455. @Steve:

I’m no expert at this but what I’m seeing is not really. Maybe he’s hitting .235 but “should” be hitting .255. With the younger guys tho it’s harder to know what’s “normal” but a BABIP of .303 is pretty good akready. It’s not like Smoak’s BABIP of .158 where its obvious hes getting unlucky.

If he passes waivers I might consider getting him back, but Ely vs the stros is a tempting option tomorrow. My ratios have been high so I picked up Gregerson, but I could consider dropping him for Ely as well.

Thoughts…?

  472. @Grey: Rausch + LeBlanc for Headley? Too much to give for Headley?

I’m starving for steals and AVG and I’ve got so many arms, I have no bench aside from Carlos Santana. Either grab a solid middle-man or use the last slot to stream.

On a side note, I’m pretty psyched about Jeff Francis. Picked him up hoping to just get a W at home. Didn’t get it but he looked great. – I never thought I’d put “psyched” and Jeff Francis together in a sentence, but there you have it.

  475. @Nick0rz: I don’t see them using him in high leverage situations any time soon. They’re going to want to get his feet wet slowly and they can afford to with their bullpen performing well.
