BABIP is Batting Average on Balls In Play.  And they sometimes lie, even if Shakira sang, BABIPs Don’t Lie.  BABIP is a quick way to know how much luck a hitter is having.  There’s more to it, but for the purposes of this, a high BABIP for a hitter and it means the hitter could hit a bloop single just over the pitcher’s head with the infield drawn in.  Below .200 and the hitter could hit a line drive into the Grand Canyon and it would get caught by Alice on the back of a mule.  Then there’s HR/FB%, which is a quick way to know if a hitter is hitting more home runs than what makes sense for that player’s amount of fly balls.  Then there’s LD%, which is the percentage of hits that are line drives.  Line drives are usually a sign of solid contact aka a player is hitting the ball hard.  Finally, K% or the percentage a hitter Ks.  So why all the fancy acronyms?  Is it just gas for your inevitable brain fart?  Nah, we’re going to see if there’s any hitters out there that are being sucky because they’re unlucky or unsucky because they’re lucky.  Anyway, here’s some hitters that have been lucky or unlucky so far for fantasy baseball:

Aramis Ramirez – His K% is poor (24.6%), but it could be because his luck has been so bad (.179 BABIP).  I’m not a huge fan of Aramis, but I think he will get better.

Carlos Quentin – His K% isn’t terrible, his LD% is fine, his HR/FB% is low and his BABIP is way off his career average.  Quentin should start to produce, if he avoids injury, though that if has its own zip code.

Carlos Lee – Sticking with the Latino Chuck theme, Lee’s LD% isn’t great and his K% is up.  Neither is a great sign and he has been swinging at more pitches outside of the strike zone.  Even with his HR/FB down, I don’t think we’re going to see a huge bounce back.  You might be looking at the beginning of the end.

Ty Wigginton – Not sure this even needs to be said, but Wiggy HR/FB% is out of control and his LD% is poor.  At some point, the bottom will fall out hard.

Kyle Blanks – Leads the majors in K%.  His average of .180 may not come up that far.

Cameron Maybin – Another guy with a nasty K-rate.  It may take another trip to the minors to right Cam-May.

Austin Jackson – I know you people think I’m crazy to tell you Jackson can’t continue what he’s doing, but he really can’t.  He’s 18th in the major leagues in K% and he has a .500 BABIP.  He’s a .275 hitter, not a .360 one.

Mark Teixeira – LD% is fine, walks are fine, Ks are okay, BABIP is low and his SUPKAKES% is okay.  Tex will be better and there’s no such thing as SUPKAKES.

    You will be getting this question a lot ’cause he just donked. I went the extra mile (YOU’RE WELCOME), searched his name on the site and answered my own questions: “Replacement for Guillen” and “No.”

    The first-place team in my league just bounced Carlos Quentin for Boesch. That’s not first-place thinking!

    I may have to add Quentin to my OF of Broken Toys.

    Also: Alice on a mule. That is choice. If that was a coffee, it would be Taster’s Choice. If it was something to do with cards maybe, it would be Dealer’s Choice. If it was a line from Black Sheep’s “You Can Get With This”… well, you know.

    @Grey, re: David Simon: To quote Mr. Gump: “WE ARE OF NO RELATIONS”

    @Baron: As for season 5, I tend to agree. I thought they did a solid job wrapping up the previous storylines and tying everything together, but the whole Baltimore Sun thing just seemed like the other dsimon trying to get back at someone for previous wrongs.

    Also Grey, I saw your response on the message board. Thanks. I’m going to pursue that. I also heard from another owner who actually gave me a pretty solid summary of his needs and thoughts on my team. I might actually be able to do something around Oswalt for Car-Go which I would like. Also, this owner wants to upgrade at 2B (from Matt Downs, who I’ve never heard of) to my Brian Roberts. I know you’ve talked about this being a lost year for B-Rob, do you still feel that way? I have Kelly Johnson keeping his seat warm, but man, I don’t really expect much from Roberts when he’s healthy and I feel like if I could turn Roberts into something useful that’d be a good move for me.

    All told, with a current staff of Felix, Greinke, CC, Verlander, Oswalt, Gio, Fister, Colby and the likes of Harang, Ely, and Olsen on the FA list (though they’re certainly the cream of the crop), would I be best served by trying to trade Oswalt for CarGo and F-Her for Reynolds?

    @Tom Emanski: Not sure how deep your league is, but unless Borbon gets back to the lead-off spot, I can’t see that he has much value. He’s not running much either.

    I think Borbon has to heat up AND Andrus has to go in the tank for the Rangers to switch him back. Otherwise, he’s Rajai Davis with 8 fewer steals.

  25. Tom Emanski says:

    Oh man! I just traded Freese for Reyes in one of my leagues! This is great, right? …right, Jose? Just a day after I traded Freese for Pierre in my other league. So I’m Freeseless and if he has a Brauny rookie year I could regret this, but I doubt it. He was excess in both leagues anyway. My other SS was Bartlett and he’s just not cutting it and neither is Alcides.

    I’m thinking it’s time to cut Beckham from my bench and stream his roster slot this weekend to aim for Ks (down by 11) and maybe Ws (tied). Any objections?

    I’m also thinking Masterson gets the nod for that role tomorrow. Ridiculous K rate, as good a shot as any for a W, as he’s going against dem O’s. Any objections to that? Other decent options include:

    1-1 ball game, bottom of the 9th. You have runners on 1st and 3rd…your runner on 1st being your everyday first baseman. 1 out. Can someone please tell my why Ron Washington pinch ran for Smoak on 1st when his run doesn’t matter or count for shizz (that being, if the runner on 3rd scored, you win)? And no, blow is not the correct answer, although it would be a very good guess. Just seems to me like a terrible managerial move, and now Garko is in to play 1st when they didn’t score.

I was kind of hoping he wasn’t hurt either. But it still didn’t make a whole helluva lot of sense when his run didn’t matter.

  63. @Wilsonian:

  64. @Eddy:

    Me too, but it was kinda a situation where Latos seemed like the best streamer and my week was already down the tubes (well maybe not now). Its even more annoying in that league with Losses counting, someones bound to eat the L even if both do great.

    Yea I understand. It’s just that on the 20th of last month I’m sure you remember these two faced off and Filthy got the loss, but gave up ONE hit. Something about Latos and SF that gets him rolling. Anyone but him and I would’ve been fine. Oh well, maybe next time.
    @Elijah:
    Oh wow, I’d imagine with Loses counting it’d be even more riskier to run a couple of guys facing each other KNOWING there’s a high chance of you getting dealt a loss.
    @Grey:
    So much for those “GIANTS ARE GOING TO THE WS!” posts I would see on Yahoo’s message boards after their 3-0 start.

  71. \@Eddy:

    It just comes down to situations in HtH where I figure I got a 10% chance of winning pitching if I go with the high risk move but 0% chance if I sit on my hands. Unlike roto, theres no longterm penalty if it blows up in my face so roll with the 10%. Its like hitting on 15 in blackjack when you see the dealer has a king showing, the odds are with you and if you lose well there always the next hand.

    I was seriously starting to consider dropping Frank Frank for the next hot MR with potential saves in his future, but then he went and struck out four dudes in 1 1/3rd inning. 20 pitches, 17 strikes, four of them whiffs. Sure it’s the A’s, but it’s got to be a good sign that he pounded the strike zone, right?

    @Dingo: it’s a good sign, but each time Feliz goes out there in the closer role and performs Frank Frank looks more like the 8th inning guy. Not to say it will always be like that, specially given how Feliz tends to recover very slowly after throwing 20+ pitches, but I wouldn’t count of Frank Frank getting too many saves unless something drastic changes

    Grey,

    Since you have the Buy/Sell coming up tomorrow, is there anyway you could put a spin on it and say who you should sell the guys for or who you could buy at what price. Maybe a peaks for valleys section or vice versa?

    For instance, Kelly Johnson seems like he’s peaked out and could fall back to earth a bit. Is he worth swapping for someone who’s bottomed out but could bounce back a bit (A. Hill, B. Roberts, etc.)?

  113. Dingo says:
    (link)

    @mauledbypandas: Yeah, I’m not trying to anticipate any role change yet, just taking it one step at a time:

    Step 1 – stop demolishing my ERA, WHIP, and K/BB
    Step 2 – provide fantasy value
    Step 3 – become closer once again

    At this point, anything beyond step 1 is something for me to get excited about.

  114. ThePensive says:
    (link)

    @El Burro: I’d go with Harang or Masterson, depending on the risk/upside of the rest of your staff (if it’s risky, go Harang for balance/stability, if it safe, Masterson for the upside).

  133. El Burro says:
    (link)

    @ThePensive:

    Yeah, my league (14 teams) is very deep (30 players per squad) and solid owners all around — we start 12 pitchers every week (4 SP, 2RP and 6 Flex pitchers), so good SP is a rare commodity and the wire is thin, at best. So, not looking to “sell” unless I get a better arm in return. In fact, I think Hudson could be this year’s Chris Carpenter – his stuff is still legit; despite a somewhat shaky start last time out. I like the ERA, WHIP potential there. I dont chase wins much, so Im pretty content with 3 wins, 2.64 ERA, 1.24 WHIP out of my 4th or 5th arm (the WHIP should probably get better). I do like to sell high, but not sure what I could expect to get in return…

    Ill run with Masterson…again. I owned him the first 4 weeks of season and dropped him for Morrow! Morrow is a little too wild for my liking, pretty sure hed walk me if I got an AB against him; and I cant hit an 80 mph fastball, let alone one in the mid 90’s.

  134. William says:
    (link)

    @Grey – I need to vent.

    Prince Fielder, David Wright, Curtis Granderson, Jason Bay. those were the first 4 batters I selected and my keeper was Matt Kemp. My middle bargain pick was Carlos Quentin. I have 1 homer this week.

    If you were me, what would you do? Which players other than Bay would you try to trade? My league mates have a prejudice against Bay the way they do against Alfonso Soriano… to my benefit.

    I keep praying to the H2H gods that I somehow stay in the playoff hunt despite my top players batting like Rey Ordonez. F’n Fielder Pronking me.

    @Grey – always the voice of reason.

    Here’s another preference question: In my H2H league I currently don’t have a streamer position… which I tend to like, but I’m not sure who I can drop.

    Who is more worthy of a spot in a 12 team league? Ervin Santana or Wandy Rodriguez? I’m leaning towards Ervin since Wandy can only be useful in home starts and he might not be healthy all year. I really screwed up drafting him in the 8th round of my draft.

  147. @Grey: Just offered a chump dump of AJax, Gregg and Buerhle for Dempster and Gardner. The guy owns Lidge, so I’m hoping to catch him at a moment of temporary insanity.

    I know you’re not a fan of Gardy but I think he’s elevated his game above the other SAGNOF sons. Dude has an 11% walk rate and hitting in that lineup, he’s scoring tons of runs.

    Wow how about 22 for 132 so far this week with a .225 OBP. This is a team that includes Pujols, Jete and Panda mind you.

The rest of my team (these guys, I can’t drop, unfortunately in some cases, for Branyab) is Doumit, Weeks, Sandoval, Uribe, Prado.
