Edinson Volquez left the game after the 1st inning.  Hey, that Edinson-Josh Hamilton trade looks pretty even again, huh?  Volquez was complaining of finger numbness.  Was it cold?  Maybe he can pitch wearing mittens.  If it’s finger numbness from non-weather related reasons, it’s not a good sign.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Volquez ends up back on the DL.  Okay, here’s a pretty general thing that generally applies (ain’t that something?), a pitcher is suffering from anything to do with his throwing arm?  You want out.  Let someone else deal with the agita that comes with a pitcher dealing with arm issues.  Kazmir, Ervin, Baker, etc.  I’ll probably be touting you to draft them all next year.  I wouldn’t go near any of them this year, unless the deal was ridiculously lopsided.  Obviously, Volquez has more value than the other three schmohawks I mentioned, but be wary.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Grady Sizemore – News hasn’t gotten better.  If rest on the DL doesn’t heal his elbow, he’ll need surgery and will be out at least 6 weeks.  I’d say you’d be lucky to get a decent September out of him, if surgery’s necessary.

Chad Qualls – Over the weekend, Mark Grace, the Diamondbacks color man, said that Qualls was experiencing forearm pain.  (This info was supplied by one of our commenters.  In other words, if it’s incorrect, I wash my hands of it.)  Yesterday, Tony Pena got the save.  Pena definitely has closer stuff, but I think Rauch, or even Juan Gutierrez will see time as the closer.  With Pena getting the first opportunity, he should be the first guy you pickup.  I’d pick them up Pena, Rauch then Gutierrez.  Hike up your waiver wire skirts, save whores.

Hiroki Kuroda – 5 IP, 2 ER, 6 Ks.  Back from his oblique injury… which is so obfuscatory!  Solid enough start for a third to fourth fantasy starter, which is what Kuroda is.  Remember, last year he led the league in being a FLAKE.  (A FLAKE is basically a pitcher who goes from excellent to unusable from start to start.  A FLAKE is also Manny Ramirez.)

Scott Hairston – 2-for-4, HR yesterday.  It’s the Age of Hairston!

Colby Rasmus – 3-for-4 with a home run.  Now batting .750 in June, but only one RBI.

J.J. Putz – 3 earned runs and is probably out as the setup man.  Parnell, Feliciano and Stokes should share duties.  Though not doodies, that would be weird.

Livan Hernandez – 5 2/3 IP, 3 ER.  Had a Win spoiled by the Mets bullpen.  He knows the feeling, he’s spoiled plenty of his own wins over the years.

Jack Wilson – Wilson, Adam LaRoche or McLouth, who has the highest average?  If you pulled a Brewster’s Millions and guessed none of the above, you wouldn’t be too far off.

Matt Capps – Got the save yesterday.  You can lose Grabow for now.

Carlos Beltran – 2nd day in a row his belly was bothering him.  Claire Danes sends her love.

Jeremy Sowers – 5 IP, 1 ER and 5 walks.  I wouldn’t pick him up with your team.

Roy Oswalt – 7 IP, 1 ER, 8 Ks.  Has owned the Rockies in his career, and the way the Rox are hitting right now, I could probably go six scoreless against them.  Their cleanup hitter was Atkins.  Somewhere Clint Hurdle derisively laughed.

Rich Hill – 7 IP, 5 baserunners, 7 Ks.  There’s two hitters batting over .300 on the M’s.  Ichiro, obviously, can you guess the other?  It’s not their 2nd, 3rd or 4th hitters, if that helps.

Rob Johnson – 933 OPS Mariners backstop?  Yeah, Jeff Clement.  He’s in the minors.  Rob Johnson has a 513 OPS.  That’s terrifically awful.

Mike Cameron/Ryan Braun – Cameron left the game in the 6th with knee irritation and Braun left early after fouling a ball off his leg.   The Brewers trainer said they’re both day-to-day, but he’ll be monitoring them closely now that he has so much free time without Weeks around.

John Baker – There’s a new Cristal Young in town and he’s catching for the Marlins.  He’s caught 8 out of 48 for a terrible .167 CS%.  It’s so bad… How bad is it?  Prince Fielder tried to steal yesterday.  Though he was caught inflating Baker’s numbers.

Gavin Floyd – 7 IP, 2 ER, 8 Ks.  Has now thrown three solid starts in a row.  I wouldn’t count on four.

Xavier Nady – Felt pain in his elbow during a throwing session.  I’m not sitting on this doode in any league.  Here’s the thing, he’s injury-prone and he plays in a lineup where he’s not even guaranteed time.  I guess if you’re only using a DL slot to hold him, it’s not that big of a deal, but I’d expect nothing and hope for something.

Joba Chamberlain – 8 IP, 2 ER, 5 Ks.  Is this Joba’s Mom or is this?  You make the call!

  1. Chomp says:
    (link)

    Ahhh! That explains why Joba’s been doing the Truffle Shuffle after every out.

    The M’s have to get Clement up there. I have him on my bench, just waiting. Its terrible but a guy thats eligible at catcher and probably will be eligible at first base is just too good to pass on.

    I know he had a knee injury and hasnt caught for the Ms or the farm team. Hope he gets called up. He has to be a better option than Sweeney right now.

    so whats the deal with Qualls then? I’ve got a guy debating on Haren for Ryan Howard straight up and i’m thinking about throwing qualls in there now….?

    look at this trade in one of my leagues – It makes you want to throw up! am I overreacting

    Daisuke Matsuzaka and Randy Johnson
    for Ryan Howard

    please tell what is there to like about Daisuke Matsuzaka – he has shown nothing so far this year except his love for the DL and the league is hitting .385 against him – I might not be no expect here but he is making everyone look like Ty Cobb with those numbers
    his era and whip is terrible

    Randy Johnson is now a 5 inning pitcher that is inconsistant – yes Randy can give you strike outs but how many will you get for 5 innings of work – and how many wins can you get out of him

    his era and whip is terrilble

    I really think thats a veto worthy trade. Not remotely close IMO.

    @Mr Baseball: That’s a no-brainer. Similar to an attempted trade in my league last year of A-Rod for Milton (“its just a game”) Bradley, when he was going through one of his intermittent hot streaks. I don’t want to protect the league from a manager’s stupidity, but at the same time it is important to protect the integrity of the league.

    What say you about this attempted trade in my league, which has caused quite a bit of controversy:

    Jason Bay + Jarrod. Washburn for Javier Vazquez?

    Is this just a bad trade, or should it be vetoed? (12 Team H2H)

  13. mgeoffriau

    It’s worth throwing out there that so far, all we have to go on is Mark Grace’s comment during the game (I heard it too), and the fact that Qualls was apparently unavailable last night. Could be nothing, I certainly wouldn’t dump Qualls in a trade based on it. But if you are getting fair value for him (ie, your trade partner DIDN’T hear Mark Grace), then do it.

  14. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)

    @Paulie Allnuts: that’s pretty damn bad too, but at least vazquez is off to a decent 2009.

    Actually, to completely contradict what I just wrote. We have confirmation of the Qualls forearm issue.

    From DBacks website:

    “His forearm has been sore the last couple of days,” Hinch said. “He was a little bit sore and I think at this time of the season there’s just no reason to push it so we kind of have a scheduled plan to give him three or four days off. Now he’s on day four.”

    So, assuming rest is all he needed, Qualls may be back tonight. But who knows? If you’re scraping the bottom of the barrel for every save like I am, you grab Pena (and drop Grabow, woot!).

  25. Scott says:
    (link)

    @Eric: Kershaw has been pretty solid lately (2.50 ERA, 1.17 WHIP last 3), but still has walked 4 in each of his last 4 starts and will struggle for wins all season. In a keeper league, this is a no brainer, but in a one-year, it depends on whether you need the saves or not.

    note that due to a series of inuries and general suckitude, i am thin in starting pitching. i have a decent top 4 (zambrano, gallardo, edwin, lowe), but the last pitching spot has been killing me weekly as i rotate an assortment of WW pickups and castoffs (f*** you liriano and brett myers), and i have no depth to speak of.

  30. Mike says:

    @ThePoonTycoon: I play in deep leagues (16-teams or more), and Smoltz was drafted as a DL stash in all of them. I own him in a few of those, and I anxiously await his return. this is a direct copy and paste from the front page analysis on my CBS league:

    Every week, I have to make a list of borderline players and label some must-starts and others must-sits.

    It’s my least favorite part of the job.

    Because it’s a complete guessing game, and I know it is. Sure, I try to use sound reasoning — I don’t just put names in a hat and draw them at random — but the week-to-week production of stats over the entirety of a 162-game season remains by and large unpredictable. And it always will until the end of time.

    So here’s the best advice I can give you, better than anything you’ll hear on any of those start-sit lists: Don’t put yourself in a position where you have to make those decisions.

    That should be your goal as you build your team over the course of the season. True, if you end up with a weakness somewhere coming out of the draft, you have no choice but to mix and match. You can’t just keep absorbing lousy point totals. But you should aim to find a long-term solution at that position — make your lineup as stable as possible by filling it with players you can trust week-in and week-out — because every time you bench someone, you risk missing his best week of the season.

    If that means trading your excess just to rid yourself of excess, so be it.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    some real nice advice there…”hey guys, let’s all find good players who produce consistently, and if you have extra players who can produce, trade them away for pennies on the dollar instead of giving yourself some depth in case of an injury”.
    i can’t decide which mainstream site has the worst analysis, but CBS regularly blows my mind with some of the things they post as analysis.
    Trade David Wright for Hanley Ramirez if the other parts involved are merely window dressings? Let’s say I throw in Tulo or Zobrist (I’d rather keep the Z Man) and also get Aubrey Huff.
    So I get Hanley & Huff and give up Wright & Tulo. Thoughts?
  45. Tony says:
    (link)
    @ThePoonTycoon: they just run out of decent things to say and need a post for the day….
    Honestly the razzball daily roundup is better than anything i read/see on espn, cbs, or yahoo put out. They mostly tick me off by posting these huge articles on guys i’ve been watching all year about guys like Alexie Ramirez last year and give the numnuts owners a chance to snag them before me…. although i snacked on alexie before anyone else, because i’m smart like that…
  46. Tony says:
I love Yahoo for that feature at least, you send/get a trade its right there on the team page in your face… I think its hard maneuvering around their site too.     @peter: I say this as a saves-vulturing Pena owner, but here’s how issues like “forearm tightness” often go:
    1) Miss a game. “Just some forearm tightness. Should be fine with rest.”
    2) Rest.
    3) Come back. Get shelled. “I’m going to throw a few bullpen sessions to see how that goes.”
    4) Miss a week.
    5) Go on the DL. “For precautionary reasons.”
    6) Have surgery. Miss two months. See Putz, JJ, ’08.
    @ThePoonTycoon: To be fair — or perhaps overly generous — that’s not TOO far off from Grey’s sound advice about not carrying many bench bats.
    It reminds me of a fun* thought experiment that a league-mate once proposed: What if you could add a function in a standard league where you could make five post-game roster changes per year? Would this make the league more fun because of the additional strategy involved, or would it remove too much risk? And how would the roster change option be used? Would it always make the most sense to swap out horrible pitching performances, or would it be better to use it on a hitter who hits 2HRs on your bench? Would it encourage people to start unproven but talented pitchers more, knowing that they’d be protected from any Hochevar-like catastrophes?
    * At least, I think it’s fun.
    *16-team, mixed, H2H-Points League*
    Weekly league that starts 5 SP’s. Lincecum, Lowe, Harden and Porcello are my core, and I stream with the best schmohawks I can find, (Wellmeyer, Kawakami, Davies, C. Richard), for spot #5, (and, lately, #4 with Harden out). I also have Smoltz on the DL.
    Wandy’s owner has been interested in Lind. Is Lind, who has slowed down some, enough for Wandy? Would you make that trade considering my pitching situation?
    Encarnacion would ultimately replace Lind in my line-up. Adam LaRoche and Nyer Morgan would fill in until EE was healthy.
    Thanks.
    @Dingo: i agree you want a deeper bench when it comes to pitching than you do when it comes to hitting, but they never specify whether they are talking hitters or pitchers, simply guys that you go back and forth on whether to start them or not.
    furthermore “If that means trading your excess just to rid yourself of excess, so be it” to me sounds liek they are advocating just trading away guys you don’t know whether to start or not just to save yourself the headache of making a decision, not to actually improve your team.
    either way, the moral of the story is draft a good team and not worry about the rest…isn’t that the whole point CBS?
But he’s an upgrade to a DL’d Harden… and I think consensus ’round these parts have Wandy favored over Porcello and Lowe.
    Grey – I don’t know if Edwin Jackson was the pearl of your pre-season projections, but he must be close to it. Read this today from Christopher Harris’ article on Tiger pitchers:
    Edwin Jackson: Jackson hasn’t been quite the strikeout artist Verlander is (57 K’s in 74 1/3 IP), but he has bettered the Detroit ace in the control category (just 18 walks). I can’t oversell how amazing this is. Entering 2009, Jackson’s career BB/9 was 4.52, which was the biggest contributing factor toward creating a 1.63 career WHIP. Despite his 14 wins in Tampa last season, he was borderline unownable in any league. Now get this: in ’09, Jackson’s BB/9 is 2.30. Wow. He turns only 26 in September, so it’s possible he’s turned a corner in his development, and (as they say) “owns this skill set.” The fact is that while Jackson’s BABIP is .261, that’s not ridiculously lucky, and nothing else in his peripherals indicates this breakout isn’t real. Those expecting him to “finally” flop (I’ve been among them) have been frustrated. It’s looking more and more like a sub-4.00 ERA and a sub-1.20 WHIP is possible.
    The puzzling thing is that after these kudos, he rates Kawakami, Bush, and Parra amongst others, higher then Jackson
  67. Grey
    Grey says:
    (link)
    @Paulie Allnuts: I’d say the pearl was Reynolds over Davis. Wandy’s been pretty good too. Oh, and staying away from Hamilton, Pedroia and Ortiz… Then Parra… Well, they can’t all be gems.
  68. peter says:
    @Paulie Allnuts: Parra above Jackson? As I believe I read on this very site: Parra is a lefty with four pitches – and throws them all for balls.
    @peter:
    Thanks guys. I sent the offer. But what about if he wants more than Lind? Nelson Cruz too much to give up for Wandy?
  70. Grey
    Grey says:
    @peter: Guthrie
    @Mike: Cruz is too much.
  71. peter says:
    (link)
    @Grey: I’m tempted to agree with you on Guthrie, but I hate that he’s giving up multiple HR in, like, every game. And Pavano… have to admit, he’s been cooking with the proverbial gas in the last month (K/BB, and all).
  72. timSTi says:
    @Grey: In a 10 team league what caliber SS will a broken/battered Quentin get me you think? I drafted Drew and enjoyed his suckfest for a month, then picked up Tulo and enjoyed his suckfiesta as well. Have Andrus in there for now. Thanks
  73. Grey
    Grey says:
    (link)
    @timSTi: He’s not going to get you a SS worth trading him for. You’re selling him too low. Maybe Alexei, but it’s doubtful.
  74. Elbert says:
    @Grey: if a fellow member offers me Billingsley+Choo for my Sparkakis+Baker, which side would you prefer?
  75. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)
    @Mike: hell yes cruz is too much. dude has been my most consistent hitter all season and literally carried me by himself several weeks.
  76. Grey
    Grey says:
    (link)
    @Elbert: Depends what you need. Bills if you need pitching, Markakis if you need a outfielder. I’d prefer the Markakis side.
  77. Elbert says:
    (link)
    @Elbert: sorry Scott Baker, not John Baker.
  78. Elbert says:
    (link)
    @Grey: does Scott Baker’s peripheral depicts a decent comeback for 2nd half? or is he as risky as Rudy’s list have claimed?
  79. timSTi says:
    (link)
    @Grey: Yeah I know this is a big time sell low situation but my OF is pretty solid and he’s just waisting away on my team and now with Volquez possibly hitting the DL again I need a DL spot. I’ll try for Alexei but the guy that has him is in 1st and I’m in 2nd so Id hate to give him Quentin and he come back and go on a tear. Damn you Carlos!
  80. Grey
    Grey says:
    (link)
    @Elbert: No sign of a comeback, but I’d still want Markakis over Bills. The other two in the trade are replaceable.
    @timSTi: Yeah, I wouldn’t trade Quentin as a sell low, I’d bench him.
  81. Tom says:
    Francisco for Valverde and Downs? I’m torn, but I’ll take saves however they come. I like turning on closer into two, but will Valverde get his job back? He sucked when healthy.
    My man countered with the following…
    I get: Hanley, Aubrey Huff
    He gets: Wright, Kemp
    I say that’s way too much. What if I also got BJ Upton? Does it become tolerable, or is that too steep?
  83. anoraxx says:
    Here we go, another trade in progress. Beltran and Bruce for Kinsler and Floyd. I guess I am not quite a winner but I am quite full of OF as I have Jones, Pierre, Damon, Markakis, Beltran, Abreu, Bruce and 2B/SS/OF Alexei. So I can easily give up some. On the other hand I am lacking some solid 2B with Alexei, who I don´t believe in and Lopez, who I actually hate. So Kinsler would sorta come in handy. That said, my infield would consist of Fielder, Kinsler, Miguel Cabrera and Rollins :)
  84. Kris says:
    (link)
    (10 team, 6×6 OPS and WHIP): Was offered his Holliday, Votto, and Kuroda for my Hawpe, Sabathia, and Frank Squared. I desperately need R’s and HR’s, don’t need saves…I still have C-bill$, Shields, J Johnson, Ubaldo, C Young, and Hanson (OF- Beltran, Abreu, Damon). Would I be better served asking for his V-Mart instead of votto? This is the kid that picked up my J Upton when I thought he was getting demoted, so I’m not trying to do him any more favors.
  85. Tom says:
    (link)
    @anoraxx: Kinsler’s an injury risk (never completed a full season) and Floyd sucks. Kinsler’s definitely gold if healthy, but good move anyway. Alexei’s fine
  86. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)
    @Eric H.: if you get bj upton, hanley, and huff for wright and kemp, i’d be all over it.
    call me crazy, but i think upton has a strong finish to him. i think he’s a prime buy low candidate, as at least half his owners have reached the disgusted point with him (the other half are smart and willing to wait him out knowing that whatever chump they can pull in a trade would be a minimal improvement at best).
  87. @grey: hello, wondering your thoughts….was offered Maggs for Inge and Morgan? ironing out waiver wire exchanges since its not a 2 for 1….should i not be petty and take maggs while i can for those 2 borderline starters?
    Thanks again
  88. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)
    @Kris: definitely give me v-mart over votto (C eligibility and not currently on the DL for ‘personal reasons’).
  89. Scott says:
    (link)
    @anoraxx: I wouldn’t be opposed to you trading OF’s, but I don’t like Kinsler to outperform Beltran for the rest of the year and Bruce is too much for Floyd. Beltran and Bruce could bring you Utley.
  90. ThePoonTycoon says:
    (link)
    @matthole: inge is far from borderline starter if he has C eligibility. no way i take that trade if inge is C eligible. assuming you have inge at C where he should be playing since there are only maybe 3 Cs i’d bet put up better overall numbers than him by the end of the year.
  91. @Grey:
    Really, really, doubt Rauch would be the closer if Qualls is hurt/struggling. Pena or Guiterrez would be the guy. Pena has the stuff but as I was saying he’s one of those guys who will strike two guys out then hang a slider for a HR so hes not the best fit. Rauch just hasnt been any good since coming over from the Natinals.
  92. anoraxx says:
    (link)
    @Scott:
    Yeah I thought of that but Utley´s owner is inactive, respectively hasn´t been online since May 3rd.
  93. Also, I was watching the post game show and Hinch verified the forearm soreness. Quallsy is supposed to try throwing today tho and might be available again as soon as tonite.
    This guy is willing to trade Verlander for Rollins straight up in my 6×5 league (the usual categories + OBP category). I bought Verlander for $6 and he bought Rollins for $25 in our auction draft (+ $3 each year kept). Do I pull the trigger?
    @ThePoonTycoon: Really? I offered V-Mart to the Votto owner and he flatly rejected it….he’s playing Sandoval at C.
  96. Scott says:
    (link)
    @anoraxx: Sweet, that’s always fun. Maybe strengthen your staff then if you really want to deal OF’s and live with the headache at 2B (although Alexei will get right).
  97. @Kris:
    Lol you dropped Upton? As I said awhile back thats really what got Melvin the axe (well other than sitting on his hands while we kept losing and losing) was not playing Upton everyday. The GM basically told him he needs to play everyday and Melvin got all pissy, its my team etc etc. The front office was right of course, the kids got incredible talent and a lot of fire.
    Grey,
    16 player keeper league, 10 teams, emphasis on starting pitchers.
    My Liriano and Buchholz for his Lackey? I am in first and could use the upgrade with the ghost of Liriano haunting my pitching staff, but don’t want to regret trading away Buchholz like the time I traded Johan Santana for Paul LoDuca.
    (In my defense, I won back to back titles with LoDuca on the squad!)
  99. @Grey: thanks for the advice, I hope he’ll still do the trade.
    John Smoltz coming back going to affect Buchholz big time? Or is it inevitable that he’s playing for a different team this summer?
  100. Grey
    Grey says:
    (link)
    @Tom: No idea who’s Francisco. Ben? Liriano? If Liriano, then I’d take the two closers.
    @Elijah: Not sure, I think Rauch is the guy with experience, but you might be right. Might be moot anyway.
    @Greg: I’d want Rollins, but it’s pretty close and depends on your needs.
    @Paul Wilson: LoPuka? Ouch. I wouldn’t make that trade for Lackey.
    @bpasinko: Smoltz will be pitching for the Sawx.
  101. @Grey: Sure…experience in being crap, hes got lots of that. He just hasnt been any good since coming over, only reason hes on the roster is a lack of a better option. Really dont see it…and even if he was the closer I don’t think he’d be worth it, he’s just not good.
    @ThePoonTycoon: CBS is awful, and Yahoo is a mixed hat depending on who is writing for the day and how much alcohol Brad Evans has. I never look at ESPN for they seem to lay to much hype on the big names. I watch their Baseball tonight and want to vomit most of the time…Blah!
    Kendry Morales or Garrett Atkins?
    @J.P.: Whoever’s currently hotter? I’d probably want Atkins, but I’d also probably be miserable.
    @mgeoffriau: So, I have Santana, Lincecum, Peavy, and, of course, Slowey starting tonight. Slowey the only one with a realistic chance for the win. That’s base-a-ball. (Thank you for talking me into Slowey (and dropping Liriano)).
