Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Todd Frazier went deep twice yesterday.  When asked the other day if Frazier would play, Dusty Baker said, “It could be (Miguel) Cairo.  I’ve got an idea what guys’ strengths and weaknesses are… We’ll see. It’s up to Frazier.   Okay, who switched out my mint toothpicks with splinters!  You know my T-picks kill the skunk breath!”  Todd Frazier is a damn fine specimen of underachieving-could-easily-be-achieving-if-he-starts-hitting prospect hitting nom-nom.  In the minors last year, he had 15 homers and 17 steals, year before 17/14, year before he helped pen Richard Marx’s foray into romance novels, “Hold Onto The Knights.”  What can’t he do!?  Not sure if that’s rhetorical, but I’ll answer.  I’m not sure he can hit for an average over .240 in the long run.  There’s a chance Rolen gets Wally Pipp’d even if he returns healthy and that ‘if’ is the size of Hasselhoff’s ego.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw yesterday in fantasy baseball:

Aroldis Chapman – 1 IP, 0 ER, 2 Ks.  ERA is at 0.00, WHIP is at 0.57.  Dusty Baker said yesterday that the plan is for Aroldis to start someday.  That reminds me of a sentence I read recently in Scientific American, “Because of natural evolution patterns, it’s conceivable that pigs will fly someday.”

Vance Worley – Placed on the DL.  Went from a match-ups pitcher who could get lit to having an inflamed elbow.  Call the fire department!

Clay Buchholz – 5 IP, 2 ER, 7 baserunners, 5 Ks to lower his ERA to 7.77.  He looked fine yesterday, but, no kidding, I can’t believe he’s still in the rotation.  Like for real, or “Pho Real” if we’re going by the name of my Vietnamese restaurant that I’m minority owner of.  Last time I write up a bucket list drunk.

Daisuke Matsuzaka – Bobby Valentine said he’s not close to returning.  Red Sox fans exhaled.

Chase Utley – Yesterday, he took grounders.  Phillie fans inhaled.

Hiroki Kuroda – 5 IP, 7 ER.  Yankee fans burped.

Ivan Nova – Set for a bullpen session tomorrow.  Pop the champagne.  Super, Nova.

Fernando Rodney – Notched his 12th save and lowered his ERA to 0.48.  I’m guessing the Devil wouldn’t make any deals with him while he was on the Angels.

Carlos Ruiz – 2-for-4, 3 runs, 1 RBI and his 7th homer.  Hannah, so far and away the Phils best hitter so far, Hannah.  <–Almost palindrome!

Freddy Galvis – 2-for-4, with a run and an RBI.  He’s hitting near .400 over the last week and… nothing.  It’s good to see him hitting, but he could steal some bases (23 steals last year in the minors).  Somebody put Hot Stuff on his feet.

Alfonso Soriano – Before I even say it, I regret it.  I So-rue-iano.  Yet, he did hit his 2nd homer in as many games yesterday.

Clayton Richard – 7 IP, 2 ER, 4 baserunners, 6 Ks.  Hodgepadre!

Chase Headley – 2-for-3, 3 RBIs and his 5th homer.  Truly a breakout year, which correlates to around 16 homers and a .265 average.  The mouth on the left side of the screen says, “Yawn.”  The mouth on the right side of the screen says, “stipating.”

Jose Valverde – Tigers are saying Valverde should be back by this weekend.  If you own Valverde, I’m not sure if that’s good news.  The Tigers are saying Benoit could see saves, but it might also go based on match-ups.  Benoit made me think of the WWF, which made me think of Words With Friends.  I’m surprised the World Wildlife Federation hasn’t made them change the name to Words With Pals or Words With Entertainment.

Austin Jackson – Left yesterday’s game with an abdominal strain.  He might get a precautionary MRI, and we know how well those turn out!

Carlos Quentin – Rehab assignment was shutdown as he needed a cortisone shot.  2008 called and said Carlos Quentin’s stats are being erased; they’re all lies.

Jason Bay – He’s about two weeks away from returning.  Yay.  Put the ‘Get Well Soon’ balloons on order.

Alex Presley – Has left the building.  He had the full-time job, but he Mr. Bungled it and is off to the minors.  Mr. Bungled it so bad the Pirates are turning to McLousy or Yamaico Navarro.  Navarro got the start yesterday and went 0-for-2, and was lifted for a pinch hitter.  In the minors, Navarro showed light power (10-ish homers) and light steals (12-ish).  He does have 3rd base eligibility in Yahoo and ESPN, but outside of leagues that only play Pirate players, I’d hold for now.  And in those leagues, who’s your 2nd draft pick?  Jose Tabata?  Do you reach for Hanrahan?

Brett Lawrie – Suspended only 4 games, but plans to appeal.  I’d love to hear the preliminary appeal discussion with his attorney.  Attorney talking to Lawrie, “We can either go with your frustration was stemming from the egregious strike calls made by Bill Miller.  Or we can go with a skinny guy in the front row was casting a shadow that made it look like there was a hat rack on the ground.”  Lawrie, “I think I can put a hashtag on that second reason.”  “Done and done!”

Colby Rasmus – 0-for-4 with 4 high fives to Bautista, Arencibia, Johnson and Encarnacion, who all homered.  I think Rasmus also worked in a fist pump to Thames, who doubled.

Kyle Drabek – 7 IP, 1 ER, 7 baserunners, 5 Ks vs. the Yankees.  This is coming off a 4 1/3 IP, 3 ER effort vs. the Twins and 5 IP, 5 ER against the Angels, who just fired their hitting coach.  Kyle Drabek:  I Make Smart Money Look Stupid.

Wilson Betemit – 2-for-7 with his 6th homer.  Is Betemit available to teach Ryan Zimmerman how to hit?  Cause that would be helpful.

Omar Infante – 3-for-5 with two steals as he bats .336.  Omar’s coming yo!

Mike Minor – 4 2/3 IP, 6 ER.  Not sure if I’ve verbalized it, um, writing, but this Minor shizz has got to be off your team until further notice.  You know how they have obits written ahead of time for celebrities?  Atlanta reporters have the tweet “Mike Minors” ready to go.

Ubaldo Jimenez - 6 IP, 3 ER, 7 baserunners, 4 Ks to lower his ERA to 5.09.  Matthew Berry likes him as a buy low.

Dustin Ackley – 3-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs and his 3rd homer.  Hey, his bats finally got back from Japan!

Michael Saunders – 2-for-3 with his 5th steal, which he dedicated to his dad, the Colonel.

Melky Cabrera – Scratched with a sore left toe.  He’s day-to-day, or at least that’s what the aliens told me who read his mind despite his best efforts to stop them.

Corey Hart – 1-for-3 with his 8th homer.  Surprised to see him in some comments as a guy people can pick up.  I’m assuming these leagues are shallow, but, as they said in 14th century China, assuming makes an ass outta of you and Ming.  To answer, yeah, he should be owned, especially now because he usually goes on tears.

Brian Dozier – 1-for-5, 2 runs, 3 RBIs and his 2nd homer in four games, while hitting .286.  Okay, I’m talking him up solely because I dropped Cozart for Dozier.  Hopefully, things stay rozier.

Trevor Plouffe – 1-for-5 with his 2nd homer.  The Eskimos have a name for the sound of crap hitting the toilet water, it’s Plouffe.

Justin Morneau – He was activated from the DL and went 1-for-5.  It’s like he never left!

Ryan Doumit – To the DL for three weeks with a strained calf.  What an odd thing to find in a colander.

Josh Willingham – 3-for-5, 2 runs and 1 RBI as the Twins scored 11 runs.   My fact checking monkey tells me the Twins didn’t carry over this whole year’s worth of runs.

Felix Hernandez – 3 2/3 IP, 6 ER vs. the Indians.  F-Her, you should be embarrassed.  Luckily, I didn’t use the thesaurus for synonyms for embarrassed.  The Native American Anti-Defamation League has enough to deal with.

Bud Norris – 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 baserunners, 9 Ks.  I think he might be the unofficial winner of the most comments on whether or not people should pick him up.  Yeah, this Bud’s for you.

Carlos Lee – 3-for-4 with his 3rd homer, now hitting near .400 over the last week.  Ugh, first Alfonso Soriano, now Carlos Lee.  Kick me in the ass and call me Murray Chass.

Andy Dirks – 3-for-4, 2 runs and 1 RBI.  Hitting .370 out of the 2 hole.  Plouffe!

Eric Hosmer – 0-for-7.  Maybe he can work the count into something favorable then they can put in Mitch Maier.

Felipe Paulino – 7 IP, 0 ER, 7 baserunners, 9 Ks.  He’s kinda put together three solid starts (his 2nd one vs. the White Sox was a bit of bad luck).  His K-rate has always been solid, but his walk rate losses sight of the strike zone sometimes.  So far, he’s been in control.  The 1-something ERA won’t stay there, but he could be what you thought you were getting from Filthy Sanchez this year (not what you actually got).

Krispie Young – Hit a grand slam in his rehab game.  It was shirts vs. I sold my shirt for blow.  *checking notes*  Nope, different type of rehab.

Albert Pujols – 1-for-4, 3 RBIs and his 2nd homer to tie Gordon Beckham for 217th best in baseball!

Adam LaRoche – 3-for-4, 4 RBIs and his 7th homer.  LaRoche has 29 RBIs and is hitting .339.  Yesterday, Hosmer pooped twice.

Wilson Ramos – Going for ACL surgery in 2-3 weeks and won’t be back this year.  Bernie Williams, “I’d love to play my guitar at the opening of the ACL!”

Ian Desmond – 1-for-4 with his 5th homer.  He’s hitting around .330 over the last week with 2 steals.  Shine on you crazy Desmond!

Henry Rodriguez – Got the save yesterday even after Desmond E’d a guy onto base.  HanK-Rod still mowed them down, showing no signs of his recent failings.  I realized something watching him.  He’s Charlie Sheen in Major League (or real life).  His stuff is insane, and he can’t control it.

Michael Morse – Made throws yesterday for the first time in several weeks.  He said, “I haven’t been throwing, so it was kind of like a monkey riding a bike.”  That sounds awesome!  I wanna see him throwing through flaming hula hoops while balancing on a seal’s nose!  Please!

    Grey,

Entertaining post as usual, or as your 14 year old followers would say, n1. I’m a long-time reader, first-time poster.

I’m in a h2h league looking for a power OF bat out of free agency to replace my Jennings while he’s out with a tender hammy. I was thinking of taking a flyer on old man Soriano or mini-Cuban Frank Thomas, Viciedo, since they feed my love of Spanish names, and have both went long 2 days in a row. Which do I take a flyer on?

    Morn’ Grey!

    1) Drop Minor for Hammel, Ubaldo, McDonald, Norris, Colon, Buehrle, Friedrich, or Delgado? Standard categories plus k/bb ratio.

    2) Hold Pedro Alvarez for CI or drop for Seager, Headley, Helton, Smoak or Betemit? Obp instead of ba plus xbh.

    3) How much longer on Rizzo? Worth picking up the second he’s called up?

      @Melvin Emanuel,

10 team 5×5 keepah. I have 45 out of 50 hitting points (though losing I have slowed down in the past week or so) . I’m dead last in Saves and falling far behind

    Got offered Jansen for Cespedes

My OF(start 5 + 2 ut): Kemp Upton Cuddyer Rios Markakis Tabata Ibanez Cespedes & LaHair

MY RP( start 3): Putz Balfour Raunch Dotel Santos (DL)

I had high hopes for Cespedes but it looks like i can spare him.. Do you agree? Should I shoot for a more reliable (is there such a thing?) closer or could Jansen be that guy? Thanks!

    • stoopid says:
      (link)

@stoopid, His other closers are Johnson, Downs, & Frank^2.. Should I counter offer for Johnson? This closer thing is blowing my mind.. Johnson wasn’t drafted in my league and we have 30 RP spots and he’s seemingly the best closer so far.. AYADAMOS!!

      • stoopid says:
        (link)

@Persephone Garciaparra, It’s that good of an offer? I’m just always skeptical trading straight up for a closer, especially in the age of the Closerpocalypse..

        • TheNewGuy says:
          (link)

@stoopid, Id never trade for a closer this year, we’re only ever a few days from another guy losing their job.

Is Walden available? I can see him getting that closer shituation back soon, and he never really even did much to lose it- the Angels obviously wanted to continue the trend from this year. Scott Downs is not what you’d call a lockdown closer.

    • Hunter says:
      (link)

@stoopid, I would take the deal. Jansen is a high K guy, so he’ll help that category in addition to saves… and his job is reasonably solid unless he has multiple meltdowns.

And Cespedes is going to get worse as the league figures him out. I might be biased though, as I can’t stand low avg guys….

    • AL KOHOLIC says:
      (link)

@stoopid, id take that trade in a 10 team league any day, cespedes has stunk lately even before getting hurt

    • dingbat says:
      (link)

@stoopid, In terms of ability and opportunity, Jansen is essentially this year’s Craig Kimbrel. Kimbrel was the 21st most valuable PLAYER in 2011 (according to Rudy’s point shares). Yes, closers have been incredibly volatile this year, but that doesn’t mean that Jansen is any more likely to get injured or lose his job than Kimbrel was last year. Both are ace relievers with ridiculously high K-rates that will get you more Ks than many SPs. It’s very unlikely that Jensen gets 40+ SVs like Kimbrel did last year, but I think he’s a safe bet to provide more overall value than Cespedes this year.

@dingbat, Thanks for that breakdown.. I hit ACCEPT a few minutes ago..

      • chunk says:
        (link)

@dingbat, Agreed, I’m a huge fan of sagnof, especially in these dark times, but it only makes the ace closers that much more valuable. I’ve traded for Jansen in 2 different leagues.

Pickup J Garcia and drop Minor/Dotel/Cishek?

    • stoopid says:

@TheNewGuy, Dotel looks like he might be useless after news Valverde will be back this week and Benoit was stated to get the save opportunities..

    • JoeC says:
      (link)

@TheNewGuy, Minor is crizzap. Might even be heading for the Minors (see what I d… aw, nevermind). Or maybe middle relief… the guy seems to be money in his first time through the lineup, then he loses it.

Garcia has been wobbly early, but last night should give you (and me!) hope that he’s turning it around (even if it was against the G-Men). He’s got a long enough track record that I would trust him over Minor in a heartbeat.

      • rob says:

@JoeC, minor can’t be crizzap… I need him to turn it around… I love me those braves pitchers.

This is what I hate about Chase Headley (besides the fact that I just don’t like his face): he’s a damn cocktease!

Let me take you back to April 18th (as you would say, Grey, we were younger then…), when Headley had just hit 2 home runs in a game versus the Phillies. At this point, 13 games into the season, Headley’s sitting at .283/4HR/12RBI/11R. “GREAT!” a ton of fballers say. “I’m gonna pick him up. He finally *gets* it!”

Then he proceeds to lay a month-long series of eggs on your front lawn to the tune of 0 home runs and 5 RBIs over the span of 24 games. Until last night, when he finally hits another home run and makes your blurb (albeit as a yawnstipating player, which he totally is).

So anyways, in summation: don’t ever be fooled by this schmohawk. He truly blows and for that there can be no apology. I feel sorry for Padres fans that *this* is ostensiably your best hitter. :/

    • Goose says:
      (link)

      @JoeC,

As a Pads fan, I feel sorry for myself most of the time. And I agree that Chase is a total schmo, and I’ve found myself saying a lot of what you said thru his career. As a follower of Chase in roto and real life, I can’t tell you how many times I looked at his 2-for-4 with a 2B and an RBI line and then remembered what he did: “Oh yeah, he hit that double in the bottom of the 2nd, to make the score 1-5. … and then struck out/popped out/GIDP with runners on the corners in the bottom of the 8th. Great game, guy!” He did this ALL THE TIME. It was uncanny. I don’t know if there’s a name for this kind of deceptive production, but it sucks when you want the guys who seems productive to, like, be productive when it matters.

So I will say that AT LEAST this year, so far, he’s actually done some things in the 7th and 8th innings. And it actually seems like/feels like (no, really) this could be his break out — not anything crazy, just a break out year “for him”. Would I trust him to keep it up? Hellz no.

Anyway, in summary, I hate Chase Headley, even though he’s the best player on my team. Yes, this is the life of a Padres fan.

Just found out the guy with Hamilton in my 16 team H2H is typically the team top of my division and im playing him now. So basically Hamilton stays healthy and has a monster year and the dude wins my division hands down.

So I don’t want that to happen, yet I’ve been riding Hamilton all year in my other roto league to 1st place…this is a case where it’s gonna be literally impossible to win both leagues!

@chata, I hear ya on Zimm. I’ve never been a fan but took a chance on him for Morse at the years start (before any injuries obviously), seeing as all the rankings had Zimm above Morse (basically because of 3B eligablility).

Luckily Morse has been injured, but I still feel the other guy’s gonna win the trade overall, as Zimmerman’s been so craptastic. Morse could do more in 3 months than Zimm does all season…he’s got my vote for next blimpotence candidate.

@AnotherFalstaff, Interesting thing about Arrencibia, he hit .236 in 116 games his first year in AAA but then he came back and hit .301 in 104 games at AAA the following year. He kind of looks like one of those guyst that goes through and adjustment year when he jumps a level. He’s got the power…ISO’d .219 last year. His average is up to .243. He’s sitting against some tough match ups which should help the average a bit but depress the counters a little. He also hits right at the bottom of the line up. If you want the HRs he’s your guy and I predict at least a .250 average so you can put some of the worry of another .220 season aside in my opinion. Runs and rbis should be close.

Hoping Hosmer isn’t the second coming of Alex Gordon and Gordon Beckham…

Yesterday hurt extra cuz I wasn’t even gonna start him. But Bruce didn’t start vs. Johan so I had to start him… it’s a sad state of affairs in Hozland when I am better off starting a guy not even playing (Bruce pinch hit sac fly > 0 for 7). In fact, 0 for 7 is about as horrible as a hitter can do in one game.

It’s mental at this point. He can’t work the count and gets himself out. Putting the bat on the ball but weakly. Basically a righty Yunel Escobar. The 2012 version.

@Grey…just got offered a trade that would give me A-Gon and Middlebrooks for N. Cruz and Zambrano. I figure Middlebrooks is up in the air and who the hell knows about Zambrano from game to game, so realistically I’m looking at this as A-Gon for Cruz. What you think?

@bobbo, yeah man, as soon as i wrote this post, I approved that trade. Don’t even know why I asked honestly.

Alright Grey, I was stupid enough to start Minor. Got greedy and got what I deserved (and expected to be honest). I was going to ask what to do with him, but you have answered that for me. What I wasn’t expecting was the F-Her blow up in Cleveland. He looks very hittable lately. Let’s hope an MRI is not in the offing. Oh yeah, and for good measure I lost Doumit after finally getting a Catcher who looked like he could hit. What the F!!!

    Rant complete. Thanks Grey.

@Grey, I was at a Pirates game in ’02 or ’03, and on the scoreboard, as Doumit came to bat, they were playing the game where you add picture words to spell a guy’s name…

For Doumit, they had a loaf of bread + an ant + homer simpson + a baseball glove. Beginning at that moment, I started calling him Homerglove.

    Couple of questions for you…
Have stubbs at my utility spot right now, waiting for him to start hitting/stealing like he can. Cespedes, Kendrys, Pena and crawford are available. Pick up any of those to replace stubbs or wait on him? H2H with OBP instead of average.
Josh johnson was dropped…i would think he’s worth a pick up for the chance that he dominates. Thoughts?

    • bobbo says:

@Captain Kirk, League specifics would help, but I’d guess that unless you’re in a super shallow league you can find someone to cut for the upside Moore brings… it’s not something you can easily find on the wire. Just know that you’ll probably be benching him until the light clicks for him.

  41. Eddy says:

Yeah, that’s how I felt like going into the catcher pool to replace Doumit.

    • The Talented Mr. Dope Man says:

He flied out to center in the top of the 9th so maybe he can play through the pain.

again, great stuff grey. i’ll never pass up the opportunity to give you props for the work you do on this site replying to these comments daily

i read your stuff on trade vetoes, and i’d like your thoughts on this:

    standard yahoo public 12 5×5 h2h league

red owner trades ellsbury and some guys to blue owner for gianmike stanton and some other guys (can’t remember the other guys; remember it was a bit skewed in favor of blue but mostly fair)

now, yahoo has the 2 day waiting period where the other owners can review and veto the trade. nothing happens for most of the time, but with 10 hrs left before the trade is “official”, ellsbury gets hurt.

blue owner (who would get ellsbury) sends flurry of email/posts to all owners, saying please veto the trade asap b/c of the injury, clock is ticking; claims red owner agreed, as blue owner promised to make it up to him via a sweethart trade later (this was also in the email); blue promised sweethart deals to any other owners who also vetoed

two other owners agreed via posts and the trade was vetoed (btw, no”sweethart” trades have happened yet – probably won’t – blue owner seems slimy and has proposed many unfair one-sided trades before)

later, one other owner posted message calling whole affair “weak” and said he wanted nothing more to do with league; has not made a move since

blue owner replied, said this did not affect other teams, only red and blue; real mlb would have rescinded trade based on injury

i’m thinking, mlb would prob not rescinded trade, as in season trades are usually done w/o physicals, just med and dr exchange, mlb would review terms and approve in few hours, not two days – two days is fiction for yahoo owner convenience; you can hear trade done at 10am and player in uni for new team at 705pm game; red and blue agreed and had trade been “real”, veto time would be moot

fyi, by the time i got the messages, blue had the 4 vetoes; i prob would not have vetoed, because i feel red and blue made their bargain, blue just got lucky with the timing to be able to walk away from it; i mean, if one traded for say longoria and the next week he goes on the dl, can he go back and veto the trade, saying i didn’t expect to get an injured player?

just curious for your thoughts on this

as always, thanks for your time

    Good Morning Grey,

Could you look into your crystal ball,
and tell me if Parker is worthy of a stream
tomorrow against Big Head Bruce and the Gints?

Four starts against 4 of the better offenses in the AL,
(Det, Bost, ChcW, and Tor) and he hasn’t given up more
the 2ER in any of them. The K/9 is just ok (7.28), the
last 2 games his BB have been a bit high. But the SF offense
will never be mistaken for those 4 AL clubs he has already
    pitched against.

    A.J. Pierzynski
    A.J. Ellis
    J.P. Arrencibia

  83. Grey — Is there any news on Huston Street? A savvy manager in my 16-team one-year roto league where saves are hard to come by just dropped him. Isn’t he supposed to be back relatively soon?

I don’t have a high waiver priority but unless there’s some negative news I don’t know about regarding Street (did he visit Dr. Freeeeeze?), I’m going to make a waiver claim on him. But if I get it who should I drop? My other relievers are Frank Frank, Cishek, H-Rod, and Fuentes, and other players I have owned in less than 50% of the leagues are Luke Scott, Jed Lowrie, Aaron Hill, and Tim Stauffer.

I don’t really need saves, but if I manage to grab him I’m sure I can flip him or another reliever for someone good.

In regards to dropping Mike Minor- In my 14-teamer available options are: Jarrod Parker, Paulino, Randall Delgado, Paul Maholm, Derek Lowe and that’s about it. Should I make a swap or sit tight? I’m leaning towards Parker for his start vs. SF, then grabbing Delgado after he faces TB.

Sad to see my man Minor stinking it up, when he’s on, he’s nasty, hope he figures that shizz out.

Posted this late last night and got a response from Grey (The guy is beast! How does he find the time to respond to everyone? Best, most entertaining sports site on the web). But he suggested I maybe re-post in the morning if I was looking for some other opinions to make sure I’m not off base.

This is causing quite a brouhaha in our league…

    $280 12-team 5×5 keeper rotisserie league

Here is the set up: Team A announced before the draft this year that they wouldn’t be back next year, so they’re a lame duck team and this will be their final year.

They just made the following “dump” trade:

Traded away from Team A (who won’t be back next year) to Team B
    Sean Marshall $10 (contract=2)
    Anibal Sanchez $7 (X)
    Michael Morse $15 (2)

Traded away from Team B (currently in second place) to Team A
    Andrew Cashner $5 (1)
    Bobby Parnell $1 (1)
    Mat Gamel $1 (2)

    Definition of contracts statuses:
1 = drafted this year (can be kept next 2 years at same price)
2 = 2nd year of contract (meaning they could be kept at current salary next year or signed for additional years @ $5 extra per yr)
X = Last year of contract, must be released after this year

Clearly Team B benefits from the deal this year. But why is a team that isn’t coming back next year making a “dump trade” for next year? And if they are trading for next year… why are they giving away arguably the 2 best potential keepers in the deal (Morse and Marshall)?

Gamel is cheap, but has not proven anything in the majors and just blew out his ACL so may not even be ready to start the season next year and isn’t necessarily guaranteed a spot I would think. Cashner and Parnell have potential but are merely lottery tickets at this point. On the other hand, Morse is a guy who has hit .300/30/95 last year and can be kept next year at $15, and Marshall actually currently owns the closer role, so may be a keeper next year if he can hold it all year.

I know Grey’s thoughts on protesting trades (and have read his awesome email suggestion). I myself am an adamant defender that you shouldn’t need to review or overturn trades just because they are “bad” deals. But I have also always given the caveat that if some sort of collusion is suspected then that is a different story. (BTW the league has been around for 20+ years and these two teams have been in the league maybe half that time and are buddies from back in high school).

Is it just me or does this deal seem suspicious? How can you explain this trade other than someone giving their buddy a sweetheart deal on the way out the door? How should we handle this? Should I raise the issue with the commish or just let it drop? The whole thing is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. A couple other owners have chimed in now as well and think the deal is bogus.

Curious as to other people’s thoughts on this.

Sorry about how long this post is. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time the read through this whole mess and respond.

    • Eddy says:
      (link)

      @Lane Meyer,

I think this is worthy of at least an open discussion in the league forums, especially if you know that you’re not the only one feeling like this. The fact that they both know each other is a bit suspicious.

The trade itself is pretty bad, but it won’t decimate the competition of the league. One closer can only do so much and we’ve yet to see if Morse will come back doing the same thing. In addition, I don’t think it’s prudent to keep closers as keepers. A league member thought he had a sure lock keeping Storen and Axford and rounding his staff out with Heath Bell in the draft. We know how that’s turned out.

So I wouldn’t rule for a veto immediately, but perhaps getting so opinions on the message boards may sway the commissioner in that way.

    • Poo Holes says:
      (link)

@Lane Meyer, Definitely seems fishy to me, and that’s not just because a Marlin is in the deal. I’d think about sending a message to the guys and seeing why that deal was done. Nothing over the top, just an inquisition. That’s my 2 cents, after dealing with a commish who gets upset with any deal I make in a league with my buddy, regardless of how fair it is.

    • WhineSpritzer says:
      (link)

@Lane Meyer, Sounds like collusion to me. I don’t know how else it could be explained. Team A clearly isn’t trying to win this year with that trade so what else could it be? I’m not one for vetoing trades either, but I have no problem voicing my opinion on bad trades in my league (which are rare). I would be ticked at this.

    • peter says:
      (link)

@Lane Meyer, The trade is definitely lopsided. But, since it doesn’t involve any top tier guys… it could be worse?

  95. Poo Holes says:
    (link)

Valverde and Lawrie write up were hilarious (#yabuddy), but why would I expect anything less from you, Grey?

Would you trade Pujols for D’Ellsbury straight up in a keeper league? My best outfielder right now is Alex Gordon (yes, not pretty) so I could use the upgrade. Could always throw in Minor/Smyly as a sweetener, or maybe one of my many closers (probably Dolis). Somehow I think an infield of E5, Kelly Jo, Aviles, and Middlebrooks could hold up. Also have Youk on my DL waiting to come back. Thanks as always!

@Tom, I think Grey is right that sometime in June you will see him up. AAA is a placeholder for him right now so he can pitch in front of better defenses and in a hitter friendly league. I also think this move frees up room to call up Andrew Chafin to AA soon.

Where do you put him with Saito and Hudson coming back?

  101. peter says:

Don’t look now, but Morneau is 3-8 since returning from the DL and hit his 5th HR.

After Lind’s mercy killing, is Morneau a “decent” option at CI? Others include Todd Frazier, Betemit, Yonder Alonso.

Moves are limited, so I hesitate to grab the hot bat (which isn’t really applicable at CI) or someone who may lose playing time in the next week or so (Betemit once Reynolds comes off the DL?).

      • Awesomus Maximus

        Awesomus Maximus says:
        (link)

@Grey, Eh… more of a “Finally” than a “Finale.” It was like a nature doc on wolves played out by humans. The alpha female establishes herself and puts all other bitches in their place. Her commands are followed by her subordinates without question. If a question arises, and that female is a threat to the community, she is ostracized.

The alpha female is frequently challenged. When she is victorious, praise is showered upon her. If she loses, and it’s a reward challenge, she is permitted to participate in the reward anyway. If she loses in an immunity challenge, she is spared, and this opportunity is used to remove a female of the alpha’s choosing. You didn’t know wolves had reward and immunity challenges, did’ja?

Seriously though, it was joke… an unfunny joke told by someone with no sense of humor. You’re going to actively participate in ensuring Kim makes it to the finale, and then tell the jury she shouldn’t be there? Even a jury full of morons (which was the case) can see through that. That’s why Kim’s biggest cheerleader, Chelsea, didn’t receive a single vote.

Seemed like there was a major flaw in casting this season. My best guess is that they were looking for characters, first and foremost. In the best seasons, they looked for people who wanted to play the game first and foremost, and then characters emerged. Whatever it was, even Probst had to admit, “I think this season was a bit of a letdown.”

Can’t say I’m excited for next season, either. Returning players? Ugh… Evacuees? Really? James is the only interesting one on the list, as evidenced by the fact that he’s already been back twice. And before you say Colton, A.) I don’t think the sequel has anything to offer that we didn’t see in the original, B.) he didn’t have an injury that demanded evacuation… he had a bacterial infection and just used it to pussy his way out of the game. Russell Swan might be interesting… Kourtney Moon might be, as well, but I don’t know if her cancer treatment will (would have) allowed for it.

  116. Hola Grey —

Wonderful news about win, Lind or draw.

14 team, mixed, non-keeper, 6×6 (ops) league — 4 bench spots, no DL. Thought i might be able to keep Lind on bench, but due to injury and stashes — Jennings, Reimold, Morse and Bauer, not sure that’s possible.

Question: hold Lind, or ditch him…

Need to either drop him or Minor — for best 6×6 bat option for 2 weeks or so:

    Chris Heisey
    Todd Frasier
    Will Venable
    Eric Thames
    Seth Smith

in my seldom mentioned keeper league (keep 9) , where my only SP worth keeping was strasburg , i felt compelled to trade j. montero (last november) for mat latos .

since then , i drafted yu and feliz …. and traded for price , 2 weeks ago .
price cost me david wright , but i have lawrie and moustakas , so i’m
    happy with that .

have seen latos pitch 2 or 3 times , and am wondering why i shouldn’t
just drop his unimpressive self and pick up j. parker .
    got a good reason ??

actually , i dropped bedard to pick up parker for the start vs the giants ,
but am still pretty disappointed by mat latos .

am thinking bedard is the better pitcher , at this point , but he’s a bit old for my team , and , with this team , am not seriously contending until 2013.

    so , i guess i’m asking …. 9th keeper ? latos or parker ??

@grey, DL question. I’m the only one in my 14 team mixed league without an occupied DL slot. The tempting gimps available are Storen, Lidge, Luebke and DRobertson. How would you rank?

Buy low or hold on picking up Scherzer? Are you buying the fixed mechanical flaw, insane k/9, swk%, and inflated babip or will he defy his peripherals and die by the sword of the Tiger’s horrible defense? He was just dropped for the second time in my yahoo 10 team league.

My SP has been solid so far with gallardo, Beachy, Sanchez, morrow, Zimmerman, darvish, and sale. Closers have been suspect (big surprise!) with Marshall, Walden, H. Rodriguez, and Santos. I would probably ly be dropping H-rod for him. Thoughts?

    • Grey

@Melvin Emanuel, I’d take him for super cheap or off waivers, but he needs to throw a good start before I’d put him in my lineup… I don’t think you have a closer to drop right now…

My thoughts on the Survivor finale:

Which reminds me that Jeff didn’t even ask her about that, but he also seemed all coked out running from one uninteresting story to the next… even he couldn’t make that reunion fun to watch.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

@Awesomus Maximus, Wow, did Probst say that about it being a letdown? I think you hit the nail on the head. You need people who want to play/win and will do anything to accomplish that, then characters will emerge — exactly. It’s my favorite show so it[‘s sad for me to say this, but it was the worst finale. No one even thought of taking out Kim. Sabrina even said Kim could be lying to her and she did nothing. Then the girl that might have animosity on the jury suddenly finds a heart. Ugh.

Hey grey…haven’t been able to make a deal with the Pedroia/Andrus owner from yesterday. Another owner emailed me and said he’d be willing to deal Kendrick. Currently starting Daniel Murphy for the last week and he’s been solid, but obviously he’s probably not going to offer much long term other than a good average. Kendrick hasn’t been great thus far, but do you consider him to be a good buy low candidate in light of his preseason top 50 ranking?

This guy’s outfield is pretty weak. (Kendrick, Bourn, Prado w/ Trout at Uti) I’m pretty deep at OF (Giancarlo, Pence, Berkman, Stubbs, Reddick, Scott)…(we start 3 +2 util spots). My pitchers that he might be interested in are Zimmerman, Peavy, Gio, Bumgarner, and Anibal.

Would something like Reddick or Scott + Zimmerman be a good price?

@Grey, I take that back. I just took a look on YouTube – it’s not the flail that caught my eye – it’s his exaggerated backswing. Need some serious batspeed to get back to the ball – which it seems he has.

@chata, Nah – I thought he was available but he actually wasn’t. Had a terrible day’s starting pitching, pretty much all the way around – though I do own Halladay in one league.

@chata, Don’t think so. We don’t put kiwis in pies. They are a very rare and protected species.

I’m a dirty liar. Do you like Jesus over JP? I’ll admit I have a mancrush on JP and Jesus has SUCKED since I traded for him. I’m also not a huge fan of playing a ton of guys from the same team (have Kelly and The Carnation, too). What do you think?

    • chata says:
      (link)

      @Wilsonian,

you just have to pick the right team .
if you do it right , you can cut down on your channel surfing .
bunch of teams i don’t ever watch .
3 or 4 rangers is much better viewing than 3 or four mariners , white sox , etc .
did alright last year , with a few d-back players .

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@chata, haha. Well played. So I guess you’re saying you’d be OK with a few Jays? At least they tend to score a lot. I’m still not sure I can drop Jesus. Especially after I traded a BJ for him. But I’ve had him for over a week and I’m pretty sure he has a whopping two hits.

    • Poo Holes says:
      (link)

@Wilsonian, I have Kinsler, Andrus, and Hamilton on one team. I am very happy. (Actually had Napoli too but traded him in a mega deal.) I would own 3 Jays, however, I would not own 3 Yankees. I wouldn’t even own 2 Yankees. GO SOX!

          oops .
meant both poo holes and wilsonian .

gordon and hosmer are screwing the pooch for me , this year .
otherwise , have enjoyed moustakas , and now dyson (a bit) and newly acquired FalU .
          and broxton .

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

@Poo Holes, yeah. I guess I would be OK with 3 Jays. Especially guys who just hit the long ball. Seems like at least one of those guys hit one every game. However, I don’t know if Jesus is flat out droppable even in a shallow 8 Teamer. I know he’ll blow up the second I do, but JP has looked locked in lately and I’m also afraid I’ll miss out on a hot streak.

        • Poo Holes says:
          (link)

@Wilsonian, If it’s not a keeper league and it’s fairly shallow then I bet you’d be okay. Catchers are generally a crapshoot, they’re either on fire or they’re hitting .190 so it’s all about riding the hot bat. I own Miggy Montero and Posey and they’re stinking it up lately.

@Poo Holes, Too much pressure! I hope the regression fairy is not paying him a visit.

Can’t be worse than Hosmer though ;-)

@Steve, Yeah tell me about it…

I drafted him in my 4 team league (me and my roommates for bragging rights) and I’m thinking about dropping him because it’s insanely shallow. Also have him on an ESPN h2h team that I just picked up from an inactive friend. I’m rooting for both of them to do well!

Hey grey, other team’s owner isn’t interested in Luke Scott or another hitter for that matter. Says he needs a pitcher. Out of Zimmerman, Peavy, BumGarner, and Anibal, who do you like the least the rest of the way? Would one of these guys straight up be a decent deal for Kendrick?

Yeah, Probst said, “I think this season was a bit of a letdown. No fault of the Survivors, we are the producers. We just didn’t have the standout moments and characters needed for a great season.”

The show is at its best when you have a handful of people who are playing, plotting, and scheming like their lives depend on it. You get that situation when you mix a truly difficult game with people who truly give a crap about the title of “Sole Survivor,” maybe more than they care about the million dollars.

I think we’ve been seeing more and more expected “characters” (and more photogenic people) than real “players” for a while now. And the game has been getting easier and easier (more comfy camp life, way more luxurious rewards more often) to allow those people to hack it. I really hope that snowball is stopped, because it’s still the only show I feel like I have to watch.

    • chata says:
      (link)

      @Awesomus Maximus,

      agreed .
softening of the game over the years has allowed the “weakies”
a better chance to advance , and hence to screw up the game .
all this ‘inviting the past players back’ has led to more movie-goer types
      than actual players .
ooooh , i want to be on boston rob’s team .

@chata, Was at the game, and it wasn’t pretty. And just to make it all the more ugly, some Dodgers fans decided that when Bud Black and the trainers were out in LF taking care of Darnell that it was the perfect time to start a “let’s go Dodgers” chant. Classy.

i have a possibility of trading hanley for adrian gonzalez.

how do you feel about that deal? i alreayd have prince and reynolds at 1b/util, and i’d have to pick up a ss off waivers (12 team league so the best available is like cozart or ian desmond or something).

      @thurman,

i’m buying into a “progression” back to the norm for a-gon .
not so , for hanley .

what can you get for reynolds ?
