At the time of this writing, there’s a tentative trade in place, one that would send Matt Garza to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a few prospects, including the heavy hitting 1B/3B, Mike Olt.  Olt has long been a trade candidate — he’s an MLB-ready third baseman, but he’s thoroughly blocked by Adrian Beltre — and I’m surprised he wasn’t moved last season when his value was higher.  Still, he’s a good fit for the Cubs and he’s been hitting quite well over the past month at Triple-A.  The deal seems to make sense for both clubs, but this sort of tentative trade is never a sure-thing, as Cubs fans can attest.  There’s a decent chance that this one will be off the table by the time this post runs.  And if that’s the case, then Garza is scheduled for two starts next week.  He’s listed below along with all the others going twice.

As always, probable pitchers are subject to change.  For a look at all fantasy baseball streamers, click that link.

MUST START

Max Scherzer (@CWS, PHI); Yu Darvish (NYY, @CLE); Chris Sale (DET, KC); Matt Moore (@BOS, @NYY); Patrick Corbin (CHC, SD)

  • Start ‘em if you got ‘em.

FIRST TIER

Matt Garza (@ARI, @SF); Tim Lincecum (CIN, CHC); Jarrod Parker (@HOU, LAA); Ivan Nova (@TEX, TB); Rick Porcello (@CWS, PHI); Shelby Miller (PHI, @ATL); Jose Fernandez (@COL, PIT); Tony Cingrani (@SF, @LAD); Julio Teheran (@NYM, STL); Mike Minor (@NYM, STL); Gerrit Cole (@WAS, @MIA)

  • I love me some Gerrit Cole (56% owned in Y! leagues), and I’m heavily invested in the lad.  I watch him throw, and in general, I love what I see.  He’s bringing his fastball at elite velocity and his secondary stuff looks sharp.  He needs a couple easy outings to help get his numbers right and kick-start his confidence, and he’ll get two cupcakes this week.  As I said, I’m heavily invested, and I’m using him everywhere this week.  Other streamer options I’m excited about plugging in this week:  Rick Porcello (13%), whose severely underrated right now with an xFIP 1.73 ticks lower than his ERA; Ivan Nova (26%), who carries a 21/3 K/BB through his last three starts; Tony Cingrani (47%), who pitches in two favorable ballparks and features the high-whiff upside we’re looking for from tier one guys.  Jarrod Parker (66%), Julio Teheran (75%), Jose Fernandez (75%), and Matt Garza (77%) are still grossly under-owned, and perhaps you can get your hands on one in shallow formats.  The rest here are likely owned already.

SECOND TIER

Alexi Ogando (NYY, @CLE);  Scott Feldman (@KC, BOS); Tommy Milone (@HOU, LAA); Samuel Deduno (@LAA, @SEA); Erasmo Ramirez (CLE, MIN); Kyle Gibson (@LAA, @OAK); Hyun-Jin Ryu (@TOR, CIN); Travis Wood (@ARI, @SF); Charlie Morton (@WAS, @MIA); Bronson Arroyo (@SF, @LAD); Tyler Skaggs (CHC, SD); Dillon Gee (ATL, @WAS); Hector Santiago (DET, KC)

THIRD TIER

Phil Hughes (@TEX, TB); Brandon Workman (TB, @BAL); Ubaldo Jimenez (@SEA, TEX); Ryan Dempster (TB, @BAL); Jason Hammel (@KC, BOS); Josh Johnson (LAD, HOU); Aaron Harang (CLE, MIN); Dallas Keuchel (OAK, @TOR); Tom Gorzelanny (SD, @COL); Taylor Jordan (PIT, NYM); Jonathan Pettibone (@STL, @DET); Carlos Torres (ATL, @WAS); Chris Capuano (@TOR, CIN); Jhoulys Chacin (MIA, MIL); Dan Haren (PIT, NYM); Andrew Cashner (@MIL, @ARI)

  • Tier three.  This is where I’m supposed to dig for upside so that the desperate dude who’s facing some prick with twelve two-starters next week can cling to a tiny shred of hope because he scooped Chris Capuano, and “he’s coming off of a great start!”  Sorry people, but this is way too deep a week to be digging into tier three.  If you didn’t find streamers in the groups above, then roll with your core guys for one start each, and be glad you didn’t compromise your fantasy integrity for the likes of Dan Haren.

DON’T START

Bruce Chen (BAL, @CWS);  Todd Redmond (LAD, HOU); Roberto Hernandez (@BOS, @NYY); Joe Blanton (MIN, @OAK); Wade Davis (BAL, @CWS); Donovan Hand (SD, @COL); Sean O’Sullivan (@MIL, @ARI); Tom Koehler (@COL, PIT); Drew Pomeranz (MIA, MIL

  • Don’t.  NO!

Replace Minor w/ Medlen, my bad. Medlen is a fringy tier two guy right now… sorta tough to trust.

What does the bad. C-Mart outing mean now? Thinking of bailing for Cosart now that he is getting
    two starts next week.

@FrankGrimes: I don’t see Martinez starting this year. Cosart should get looks the rest of the season (not sure about an innings limit), so he would be my pick ROS. Probably CMart next year though. Especially with RP eligibility.

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

The fact that the Cards didn’t move C-Mart back to AAA during the break speaks loudly about their plan for him. He’s a relief arm the rest of this season, I’m afraid. Decent chance he’ll stick in a late innings role for next year, too. Cosart is a decent option… not nearly the upside of C-Mart, but he’s got an electric fastball & he’s pretty well equipped for immediate success.

    Scott,

What are your thoughts on Ogando ROS and would you start him versus NYY?

Also, how much would a Garza trade to TEX hurt his value? I read there was a snag in the trade talks due to a medical report and.there is a mystery NL involved in talks. Personally, I would love to see WAS, LAD or PIT end up with Garza. Better parks and better chances at wind while remaining in the NL.

If a TEX trade does happen, would you immediately try to sell high?

I like Ogando ROS, but I’d probably leave him on the bench for this first one off the DL against the Yanks in daily leagues.

Hurts Garza slightly if he goes to Arlington, but probably not enough to sell him.

      @Buddah Lovaz: Try searching Urethra

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

He’s a dude that’s popped up often in the comments, but I’ve never featured him in a prospect post. The reason for that is all along I’d heard his stick was ready, but the O’s wouldn’t use him because he’s a defensive nightmare & even his instincts on the basepaths are very poor. Now they’ll use him primarily in a DH/PH role, so he won’t see the field very often, but he’s ready to hit & offers some upside in the fantasy game, but he’ll have to really be mashing for Baltimore to work him into lineup every night. He’s a long shot to offer big value IMO.

  7. Luis says:
    (link)

Prospect question: What do you think of Rubby De la Rosa and Kyle Gibson? I just got offered that package for John Lackey. Im in a 20 team dynast league and Im in rebuilding mode. Lackey does nothing for me right now.

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

Lackey is pitching at a pretty high level right now… it’s not a bad offer, but I think you can get a little more from a contender in need of SP.

Time to stash? If so, drop Ozuna for him?

    • Scott Evans

Ozuna has been mediocre of late… if he’s wasting space on you bench, you can drop him to make room for Yelich.

Week 17 – I need to sit 2 in my CBS Weekly ROTO:

    Bailey @LAD
    Gallardo SD
    Gio PIT
    Felix MIN
    Lynn PHI
    Teheran @ NYM, STL
    Burnett @ WAS
    Jo-Fer @COL, PIT
    G. Holland Home: 4 (BAL), Away: 3 (@CHW)
    Benoit Home: 3 (PHI), Away: 4 (@CHW)
    Frieri Home: 3 (MIN), Away: 4 (@OAK)

My two start pitchers are a Good/bad Matchup conundrum. Jose Fernandez is a 2 starter, but one of them is @ Coors. Teheran is also a 2 starter, but one start is against a potent ST. Louis lineup.

I’m leaning sitting Jo-fer and Gallardo. However Lynn and Bailey have been bad of late. Also – Nationals improving, and AJ Burnett is just off the DL. May be Dicey.

Your Thoughts on the right move?

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

I’d sit Gallardo & Bailey/Lynn… gauge that on how Lynn does today.

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

@Gareth: bailey had one bad start. don’t count when a guy gets rocked right on the 113th pitch. I’m sure youse guys wouldn’t be any good at cricket after 4 hours either (unless that’s not a long time in that game?)

It’s an overpay, but sometimes you gotta do that in order to address a need.

  16. Hey Scott:

nice work, as always. Have a 2 part question for you:

    14 team, mixed H2H redraft – 6×6 (holds/ops). We start 12 P weekly (6 SP + 6 RP), so depth is important.

    Roster:
SP – MadBum, JoFer, Shields, Garza, Shelby, Fister,
RP – Kenley, Cishek, Tazawa, McGee, Soria, Blake Parker
    Bench – Erasmo, Cashner, CMart

Part 1 — Though I’ve been stashing Carlos Martinez for awhile in hopes of a SP role, I am also thinking he’s gonna be relief material the balance of the year, just judging from the smoke signals in STL. Given my league settings (holds), that may still work for me if he gets slotted into the 7th inning. Do you see him more as a long man this season (5th-6th innings) or higher leverage situations like the 7th? I’m in love with his filthy stuff and considering the Cards pen woes and innings they’ve racked up to date, maybe they would be wise to pitch him in 7th as opposed to long man duties. Obviously, he would have to earn it and last nights debacle vs. SD didnt do him any favors.

Part 2 — Assuming he’s not late inning material, I could sub out for SP:
Bud Norris , Rick Porcello or Wily Peralta

    Or

Could also sub out for another RP:
    Cody Alllen, Fien or Santos

    Thoughts? and appreciate the take….

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

I’d hold him for another week & see what sort of situations they’re using him in… He’s probably too valuable to cut loose now in a holds league.

  17. Jason says:
    (link)

With two starts should I start Erasmo over Sabathia(archer) or Lee(Scherzer)? Also, my bench arms are Erasmo, Norris and Turner. Would you drop any for Eovaldi, Cosart, Alex wood or Tommy Hanson?

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

In H2H points, I’d start Erasmo. In H2H cats, I’d go with Sabthia/Lee. Norris & Turner both seam like streamers… Eovaldi & Cosart are worth a look.

  18. Nate spurs says:
    (link)

Started wheeler today, he avoided disaster but is unbearable to watch, just cannot locate off speed and goes into stretches where his fastball is wild.

Anyway pick 2 from Cole, Wheeler, Erasmo, and Cingrani.

I’m guessing Erasmo and Cole for now. Would have been 3 but Peavy is back.

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

      Erasmo & Cole, indeed.

  19. bossmanjunior says:

Finally dropped Rollins last night (of course he hits a home run today). Do any of these options stick out as the best ROS option or should I just play weekly match ups: Alexei, Aybar, Franklin.

Right now im rolling with Alexei….

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

I’d try to exploit the weekly match-ups, but Aybar figures to be the steadiest.

Scott. I fully endorse punting saves. If you’re hanging onto 1 closer & trading him will net you more points in other cats than what you stand to lose in saves, then you gotta do it.
