Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Those of you who read my prospect content know that I’m a big fan of Michael Wacha, that I’ve been touting him as a fantasy-relevant prospect since before he was drafted last June.  Now that may sound like I’m tooting my own horn a bit, but I’m really not — I tout a lot of prospects, and plenty of them performed poorly upon first arrival in the bigs, making me look quite dumb.  I’m looking at you, Kevin Gausman.  See, stuff, pedigree, velocity… each of those variables is superseded by command at the big league level.  Not many people would grade Wacha’s pure stuff on par with Gausman’s, but Gausman has struggled spotting the fastball and it’s gotten him in trouble early in his MLB career.  Wacha, instead, is the one attracting all the hype, disappearing from waivers with haste.  Not to discount his repertoire — he has two plus pitches and a good third one with plus potential — but his early success is mostly to do with the fact he hit his spots.  Well… and also that he faced the Royals.  All rookie pitchers should be so lucky to debut versus KC.  Wacha goes twice this week.

As always, probable pitchers are subject to change.  For a look at all fantasy baseball streamers, click that link.

MUST START

Jordan Zimmermann (NYM, MIN); Felix Hernandez (CWS, NYY); Jake Peavy (@SEA, OAK); Anibal Sanchez (TB, CLE); A.J. Burnett (@ATL, @CHC); Mike Minor (PIT, @LAD)

  • Start ‘em if you got ‘em.

FIRST TIER

Justin Masterson (@NYY, @DET); Lance Lynn (ARI, @CIN); Alex Cobb (@DET, BAL); Andy Pettitte (CLE, @SEA); Kyle Kendrick (MIA, @MIL); Trevor Cahill (@STL, SF)

  • This first tier is a little thinner than normal.  Hopefully you already have one or two of these dudes rostered, because there’s not much from this group on waivers.  Your best bet is Kyle Kendrick (47% owned in Y! leagues), who’s cooled off of recent, but with two mouthwatering match-ups next week, he’s hard to pass up if available.  Andy Pettitte (50%) is set to return from injury on Monday.  He’s had only one markedly poor start this year, and I’m trusting the old man in week 10.  In shallow leagues, you might be able to snag Trevor Cahill (72%), but everyone else here is likely owned.  As always, first tier guys are good plays.

SECOND TIER

Michael Wacha (ARI, @CIN); John Lackey (TEX, LAA); A.J. Griffin (@MIL, @CWS); Tommy Milone (@MIL, @CWS); Luis Mendoza (MIN, HOU); Chris Tillman (@HOU, @TB);  Kris Medlen (PIT, @LAD);  Andrew Cashner (@LAD, @COL); Jonathan Pettibone (MIA, @MIL); Marco Estrada (OAK, PHI); Ted Lilly (SD, ATL); Tyler Chatwood (@CIN, SD); Tom Koehler (@PHI, @NYM); Jeremy Hefner (@WAS, MIA); Brandon McCarthy (@STL, SF);

  • This group is where the streamable options are.  If it weren’t for the tough start at Cincy next weekend, Michael Wacha (51%) would’ve been a first tier guy, following his outstanding debut on Thursday.  I’m not too discouraged by Brandon McCarthy’s (43%) rough outing at Texas this past Wednesday — everyone is susceptible to the occasional blowup at Arlington.  The rest of this group is a mix between solid arms with iffy match-ups (Cashner, Estrada, Griffin, Lackey), and iffy arms with solid match-ups (Mendoza, Koehler, Hefner).  With the exception of Kris Medlen, virtually everyone from this bunch is widely available.

THIRD TIER

Tim Lincecum (TOR, @ARI); Joe Saunders (CWS, NYY); David Phelps (CLE, @SEA); Eric Stults (@LAD, @COL); Samuel Deduno (@KC, @WAS); Erik Bedard (@LAA, @KC); John Danks (@SEA, OAK); Bronson Arroyo (@COL, STL); Chris Capuano (SD, ATL); Juan Nicasio (@CIN, SD); Justin Grimm (@BOS, @TOR)

  • I’ll reiterate my usual tier three spiel:  Use these dudes with extreme caution.  In points leagues, there are counting stats to be had here.  Avoid these guys in category leagues, though — they’ll blow up your ratios.  I promise they will.  If you’re desperate, my biggest upside play from this group is Joe Saunders, who happens to be quite good at home, where he’ll pitch twice in the coming week.

DON’T START

Lucas Harrell (BAL, @KC); Joe Blanton (HOU, @BOS); Kyle Lohse (OAK, PHI)

    Nice post Scott,
I have a problem. I have a lot of pitchers but only five spots. Will you tell me who you’d start out of these 8 SP’s I have?

    Corbin vs SF
    Hamels VS MIA
    Gio Gonzalez VS MIN
    Peavy VS OAK @ SEA(Felix)
    Wacha VS ARIZ @ CIN
    Burnett @ATL @CHC
    Gallardo VS OAK
    Cueto VS COL

Haha see what I have to choose from? I might as well flip a coin…anyways,I appreciate your advice and may the fantasy gods be on your side this weekend.

    Drop Lincecum for Kendrick ROS?

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

I think Lincecum is borderline droppable, and I like Kendrick for this week, but not necessarily ROS.

  6. John Mycell says:

    My lineup is:

    C- Vmart
    1b – Puljos
    2b – Kipnis
    3b – Longoria
    SS – Andrus
    OF – Holiday
    OF – Cespedes
    OF – Bruce/Jennings
    Util – David Wright

Many of whom are under-performing. Should I be panicking or may I have an offensive explosion here shortly. Who should I be worried about at this point?

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

Cespedes, Holliday, Pujols, Longo… I expect all four to catch heaters before long. That should bring you back into more comfortable territory.

  7. Wyattspoppa says:
    (link)

Phelps is a 3rd tier starter in what universe? He came in to replace an injured Nova and K’d 9 Jays in 4 innings, he’s given up 1 run twice, 2 once and 4 twice (one not his doing) Have you seen him pitch? 9 k’s in 4 innings in relief? He’d be a #3 starter for many teams today, forget his improvement with some more innings experience.

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

Haha, chill, Wyatt. I like Phelps well enough, but concerned about forearm injury that hampered him last time out. I have indeed seen him pitch, and I’m not against using him in general, but my advice for THIS WEEK is to not use him while reports on his health are mixed. Cleveland also happens to be a very tough opponent. Obviously, you feel different, so please follow your own judgement.

Thanks for the great post Scott. I am in a 10 Team Roto league and was evaluating a trade. My J Zimmermann and Samardzja for J Upton and T. Lyons. I need hitting bad and my pitching is stacked. Harvey, Samardzja, Scherzer, Zimmermann, S. Miller, Ryu, and Z Wheeler.

I thought my lineup was the SHIT but every week my opponents are getting more or the same points as me. Do you think I need to grab another good bat? I don’t really keep anyone on the bench cause every week I stream pitchers, adding then dropping them to get more points added on cause pitchers get a-lot of points. 20 for a win and 1 point per inning n K and -10 for a loss. Also I read your blog all the time. Look down at my pitching lineup, WACHA Flacka baby!!! Lol

  15. Benny says:
    (link)

Do you think Hosmer is worth buying low on in a keeper league? Do you think he’ll ever become what we thought he was during his rookie year? Or is just a slap hitter, with little power who has trouble beating the shift and that’s pretty much what he’ll always be. Are there any advanced metrics that maybe point to a silver lining?

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

Decent buy low. I don’t know if he’ll ever reach the lofty expectations we once had for him, but with a year-to-date ISO at half of his career figure in that department, you can safely expect an increase in power for ROS.

  16. G Penny says:
    (link)

Todd Frazier droppable in a ten team OBP keeper league?

I simply must make room and I have RyZim at 3B, Mitch Moreland at 1B, Lance Berkman (OBP God) at the corner slot, and a combination of Big Papi, StarMar, and Matt Joyce cycling through my 2 utility slots.

I guess its between Berkman and Frazier? I’ve always believed in Frazier, but I can’t see dropping Puma and his OBP, especially since his other stats fall right in line with Frazier’s. The only thing that gives me pause is the future, since we keep ten guys and Puma is near the end of his career. Papi untouchable when you look at his year obviously. I think Moreland is for real. StarMar is kind of slumping but I love his speed and I can’t ignore the season he has put up. I just picked up Joyce, and I think it was unbelievable that he sat around as long as he did, so I think I should hang on to him.

    What to do?

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

Agree. Frazier seems like your cut. Who are you making room for?

      • G Penny says:
        (link)

@Scott Evans: Pitchers, basically. I’m bringing Lyons up from my minor league squad for his start tomorrow. Probably going to lose this week anyway, but here’s the thing: It’s always been my strategy not to keep many (if any) offensive guys on the bench (we use a lot of counting stats for pitching), so for me to have two bats on the bench? I just can’t do it, it’s a waste.

It is a hard drop to make though!

Possible out: I might try to drop a pitcher I think will not be touched, then re-add him and drop Lyons again as soon as lineups lock on Sunday (we keep separate Minor league squads, so Lyons would still be owned by me at the minor league level, since he hasn’t reached 50 IP at the major league level – which is our cut-off). That would give me some more time to try and deal one of my bats away…

It’s just tough because I guess Kevin Gregg would be my drop and someone might snag him up because even though he is nothing special, saves are at a premium in my league.

Think any of the bats I have mentioned are worth a closer or mid-level starter?

        • Scott Evans

          Scott Evans says:
          (link)

You might find someone willing to ship a low-end closer or fringy SP for Frazier… someone who’s hurting at CI…

  20. Justin says:

    Hey Scott, great post!

I dropped an extra closer I have on my bench because I want to pick up a starter that can be in the relief pitcher spot on my roster; SP/RP . Out of these who do you like the best; Kyle Kendrick (Miami/Milwaukee), Kris Melden( Pitt/Dodgers),David Phelps(Cleveland/Seattle), Jeremy Hefner(Washington/Miami)

    • Justin says:

      @Justin:

      – the other pitchers I have are Jordan Zimmerman, Matt Harvey, Zack Greinke, Cole Hamels David Price & my other relief pitcher is Craig Kimbrel. We only start three starting pitchers & start two relief pitchers. I currently have both Hamels & price on the bench

    HOLY fucking shizz!!

Just managed to get Hamels AND Latos for Bauer in my contract keeper league as he’s selling off. Couldn’t believe it, was sure he meant one or the other. This league is apeshit right now with the buyer/seller deals being made.

Despite Hamels struggles he’ll surely turn it around, and even if he doesnt its worth the risk. Is that a good deal, or is THAT A GOOD DEAL!?

    • TheNewGuy says:
      (link)

@TheNewGuy: Sorry about the language, got a bit excited there. Would change it to effing if I could.

Haha no worries. Great deal for you!

  22. TheNewGuy says:

As for Wacha, as much as ya like him you did get me to draft Stephenson, Dahl and Rosie over him. ;)

Only kidding man, no way to ever know how these prospects will turn out. Its always a lottery ticket. But boy would he have been nice to have on my team for next year.

In other Cards news, hear C-Mart’s been sent to the minors, presumably to stretch him out. That mean its him over Rosie for the next rotation spot should one open up?

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:
      (link)

Stephenson is heating up… should be notes on him in tomorrow’s post

      • TheNewGuy says:
        (link)

@Scott Evans: Ok cool, so what about C-Mart. They planning on using him as a starter long-term?

At least that would make Rosenthal the long term option at closer if so.

        • Scott Evans

          Scott Evans says:

They’re stretching him out as a starter & he just might be the guy who steps in for Wacha/Shelby when they cross the dreaded workload threshold.

Its pure manic in our keeper league right now, all of a sudden everythings gone apeshit and deals are busting into action all over the place in the past week! Here are some of them:

    O Taveras for Tulo
M Harvey for Cargo and Romo
Profar and Werth for Gio, Mujica and Hultzen (my one- seems dwarfed now!)
Fielder, Mauer, B Starling for Bundy, Cingrani, 2014 2nd round prospect pick
M Carp, Cole and Skaggs for Kershaw and Springer
Cesp for Cano (much cheaper, long term contract for Cesp)
Bauer for Hamels and Latos (my one today- does seem the best deal!)

All those buyer/seller deals done between teams in the last 4 days, total frenzy lol. You ever had anything like that in your keeper leagues?

Totally fixed my pitching staff minus maybe one more closer (it was a mess), and still happy with my offense as I was already (not lost anyone from it). Gonna be a fun ride again!

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:

@steve: rotowire.com is reporting it as a left hamstring cramp leaving him day-to-day. maybe the dodgers found some luck but my guess is that he will hit the DL (pure speculation on my part; it just doesn’t seem like you would pull someone from the game if it was just a cramp). Thoughts?

no firm word on anything, but early indication is that injury is minor. it’s worth noting that Puig was not in the lineup at AA this evening & Pederson was… could indicate Puig gets first look if neeeded

    5×5; h2h; redraft; I’m currently in 1st Place

Buysellatops is lukewarm on Cliff Lee ROS but sees Gallardo as a major buy. What are your thoughts on this deal….

Sell – Choo & Brothers (other owner just lost Betancourt, and now only has a healthy Rivera since Perez is in DL slot)

Buy – Cliff Lee & Gallardo

Choo has been good but he’s riding the bench for me most nights as I have Trout, AJones, Machado & Cargo in my OF/UTIL (with Stanton Dl’d)

Is it a fair offer? I could also throw-in RYU if you think it won’t be well-received.

FWIW, I have completed a few deals with this owner over the last couple seasons. I don’t know the owner but he generally accepts reasonable offers that help his team. Earlier this year, I sent him Harvey and Ortiz for Cargo.

    Thanks

      @steve:

The other owner has the following in my OF/UTIL slots…

Markakis, Torii (who is currently Day-to-Day), Trumbo & Ortiz

Another offer could be RYU and Brothers for Cliff Lee (alone? & Gallardo?)

Choo is awesome, but if you’re not using him, then the deal is acceptable. Again, Choo is awesome.

    One more question…thanks

    Drop Sal Perez for Gattis?

Braves manager seems to like Gattis a lot and is trying to work him into the lineup but when heyward and upton start hitting seems like gattis is the odd man out.

    Hey,
I play in an H2H points league with 7 pitcher slots, and I usually have been going with 4SP/3RP. My four SP for this week are the four that I asked about in a previous question (Cain, Samardzija, Liriano, Latos) and I also have 4 relievers that I want to start, K-Rod, Brothers, Soriano, and Jansen. Should I go with the four starters and all the relievers except for Jansen since he is not currently closing? Or should I bench Cain or Liriano and start 4 relievers? Thanks a lot!

      I’d bench Jansen.

8 team league/ head to head matchup like fantasy football, who do you like to pick up on waivers I’m looking into either Matt Joyce, Dominic Brown, Evan Gettis, Matt Carpenter or Jedd Gyorko.

Here’s the rest of my roster-

    C- Carlos Santana

    1b- Paul Goldschmindt

    2b- Ben Zobrist

    3b- David wright

    SS- Ian Desmond

    IF- mike Napoli

    OF- Matt kemp

    OF- Jason Heyward

    OF- Alex Rios

    OF- Vernon Wells

    DH- David Ortiz

    Utility- Adam Dunn

Bench: Rickie weeks, Ike Davis, Nate mcclouth, DL spot Giancarlo Stanton.

    - I was thinking about either dropping either Ike Davis or Rickie weeks for either Matt Carp., Gettis, or Gyorko then also thinking about dropping v. Wells for most likely Dom. Brown since kemp was just put on the DL a couple days ago I wasn’t able to change my roster since its locked & since Heyward has been struggling I was going to bench him this week & start mcclouth.
What are your thoughts on that? Thanks!

I’d drop Davis for Dom Brown. He brings biggest upside.

Considering Gausman’s excellent game today against one of the best offensive teams in baseball, and Cashner’s drop in velocity/strikeouts, drop Cashner for Gausman?

Weekly H2H with limited moves, so this is for ROS.

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:

Yeah, I’d make that swap. I like Gausman over Cashner for ROS.

Hey Scott, Skaggs is taking McCarthys spot in the rotation and now has two starts this week. At the Cards and at home vs Lincebum and the Giants. Where do you slot him in now?

He looked great dominating the Rangers last Monday. I’m not comfortabe starting Latos vs the Cards because his history and was thinking about Skaggs for two? Your thoughts? Thanks brother

Tough match-ups. Low-end tier two, high end tier three … tough to have a lot of confidence in him.

Two brief questions here please, long time follower:
    1) Lance Lynn ros like last year or can we expect more consistent fantasy value?
    2) Dom Brown what are your thoughts on him from fantasy standpoint? Sellhigh? or hold?

    Mucho appreciated!!

    • Scott Evans

      Scott Evans says:

      1) I’m much more confident in Lynn’s ability to sustain success this season.
      2) I lean toward sell, but there’s plenty of upside with him. I’m not ready to be a believer just yet.

not liking Milone as at tier 2 because both of his games are away. He’s been bad outside of oakland.

Looks like he’ll snag a W in this one, but the awful Brewers are certainly helping matters for him…
