Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Right now on our Fantasy Baseball Player Rater the top outfielders are Hamilton, Kemp, Beltran, CarGo, Braun, Bruce, Jones, Grandy and then Bryan LaHair.  Now, I’m not saying LaHair doesn’t belong in that company– No, that’s exactly what I’m saying.  For 1st basemen, he’s currently above Prince Fielder, Votto and Miggy.  I know, you think of yourself as a brilliant NASA-level scientist who has been working on a pencil made of Doritos crumbs.  Your Dorito pencil will come to fruition; the sour cream and chive eraser is a great addition, but you didn’t plan on LaHair doing anywhere near this good.  If you own LaHair, you stepped in LaCrap.  Right now, a guy who people weren’t sure could make it in the major leagues is hitting .384 with 8 homers in 28 games.  The power isn’t totally bonkers.  He’s on pace for around 40 homers.  25 homers seems doable, maybe even 30.  The batting average is Jimmy Stewart’s rabbit, Harvey.  It’s Keyser Söze.  It’s your imaginary friend that you agreed to marry if you get to 40 years old and you’re both still single.  Right now, he has a .510 BABIP.  The only way he sustains that is if LaHair has some Zapped telekinesis power.  He wouldn’t even be able to sustain it if he hired Willie Aames to run on the field to distract the fielders.  (Willie charges $15/hour for this service if you want him for your softball games.)  His current K-rate (29.1) would have been third worst last year (or third best if you’re a masochist).   Right behind, Mark Reynolds and Drew Stubbs, two guys that are lucky to hit .240.  So if LaHair’s average drops 100+ points, at some point during that slide the Cubs are going to promote Rizzo and then LaHair’s really going to be in trouble.  I’m not saying sell him for a Jägermeister Jell-o shot, but I’d look at offers.  Anyway, here’s some more players to buy or sell this week in fantasy baseball:

BUY

Casey Janssen – Let’s get all of the SAGNOF’ers out of the way up front, shall we?  No reason to say we shall.  I can’t hear you.  You’re reading.

Addison Reed – Imagine getting behind Robin Ventura on a buffet line.  I think I’ll try the Matt Thornton, Reed, Sale, Santiago with a side of the Reed, Thornton, Sale, Santiago with a little extra Sale, Santiago– Just get the meatloaf and move on!  At least Ozzie had Joey Cora to carry his tray.  And massage his shoulders.  And manicure his cuticles.

Rafael Soriano – Robertson blows two more saves in the next five days and he’s lost the job or he settles in for the week and he’s the closer for the rest of the season.  It all hinges on this week, over-the-Internet friend!

Rafael Dolis – Okay, Random Razzball Commenter, since you’re gonna ask.  Dolis, Reed, Janssen, Soriano, Marlins Closer, Thayer, in that order… What?  Marshall’s also available?  Oh, geez.

Dale Thayer – The ex-Ray and Met farmhand as well as the star of the gay porn ‘Brian’s Thong’ is the latest bullpen project for the Padres with 2 saves in the absence of Huston Street.  Figure it’s his until he blows it or gets injured – which is the norm these days.

Steve CishekEdward Mujica, Ryan Webb, Heath Bell… You could have a team of all Marlins relievers.  You’d be dead last in your league, unless you played in the NL East, then you’d still have the Phillies below you.  Snap in the Wiz wit formation!

James McDonald – Old McDonald had a great K-rate e-i-e-i-e-i-oh.  Now relatively new McDonald’s K-rate is e-i-e-i-e-i-okay.  Old McDonald had a terrible walk rate e-i-e-i-e-i-oh-no.  Now relatively new McDonald’s walk rate is e-i-e-i-e-i-okay.  Six of one; half dozen of another.  Or e-i-e-i; e-i-oh.

Carlos Zambrano – You know how they take signed celebrity pictures and put them up in restaurants?  Why do I feel like in less than 6 weeks of the season there’s a picture of Big Z in every Cuban restaurant in Miami?   Signed Big Z, “Please consider adding a Cuban Sandwich with a Tres Leches cake in the middle.”

Christian Friedrich – I went over him the other day.  It went something like this, “Blah blah blah, good K/BB, blah blah blah, NL-Only, blah blah blah, next start against the Giants.”  And that’s me blah’ing me!

Brad Peacock – Google Brad Peacock and it returns the question, “Did you mean naked pictures of Grey talking about his favorite young pitcher?”  The A’s are rolling out guys right now that are blehtastic, and when Peacock gets called up, I’m gonna like him better than any other A’s starter, except McCarthy.  Yeah, even that damn Milone, sorry Diane.  Peacock is no streamer, even if it might sound that way.

Chris Johnson – Sticking with our newly established theme of commands an old man screams at the urinal when he’s trying to go to the bathroom, Chris Johnson has 4 homers in the last 10 days and his counting stats ain’t too shabby for an Astro.  Ruh roh!

Ike Davis – One of the first Sell’s of the year featured Ike Davis with a request for you to drop him.  Okay, now it’s time to pick him up.  There’s no flimflammery flip-flopping on fantasy first basemen (say that fast 117 times!), Davis was hideous, and now he no longer is.

Kyle Seager – Member back in March what you wanted from Dustin Ackley prior to your hopes and dreams being squashed?  Yeah, Kyle Seager’s doing that…Against the wind.  (Also, there’s a Kyle Seager fantasy to feast your eyes on.  I didn’t write it, but, if I had, I would’ve said the same thing, except switched out all the didn’t’s to dinnit’s.)

Johnny Giavotella – Will share time at 2nd base and could run like crazy, and by ‘crazy’ I mean not always successfully.  Fist pump!

Andres Torres – For all of you Where’s Allen Craig At Commenters, he didn’t make the cut off of less than 50% owned as of yesterday at midnight.  At 11:59 PM, a few diehard Where’s Allen Craig At Commenters enlisted Anonymous’ help to hack into ESPN and push his ownership numbers to 49%, but Anonymous was busy taking down Pujols.  (They have a vendetta because he once said he liked the Interview with the Vampire movie better than the book.)  But, alas, I’ll make an exception inside this Torres blurb.  I’d pick up Allen.  I’d also grab Torres.  If you don’t know what Torres gives you, see Angel Pagan.

Josh Reddick – If you go to the top outfielders of the last 20 days, you’ll see Reddick amongst some pretty big names.

Andy Dirks – I just went over him this morning.  If you close your extraneous porn windows and scroll down, you’ll see it.

J.P. Arencibia – He’s not going to hit for average and power all year, but he is now.  Arencibia — that’s a one spicy catcher!

SELL

Alex Rios – Man, he’s like watching paint dry.  Not even an exciting paint color like forest green or periwinkle.  More like a beige.  Can’t drop Rios in all leagues, but in some shallower ones there’s gotta be better options.  Like Josh Reddick.  He’s better at this point.

Chase Headley – First rule of fantasy baseball:  Don’t draft a Padres hitter.  Second rule of fantasy baseball:  Don’t tell any chicks you do this if you ever want to get laid again.

Lance Lynn – I told you to buy him before the first week of the season and he’s gone 6-0/1.40/0.85/37 in 38 2/3 IP.  I’d say we had a good run.  I’m not saying drop him before the Liquid Paper is thrown all over his stats, but you have to know it’s coming.  He has a 93.8% LOB and a .209 BABIP.  Right now, every ground ball down the line is hitting a base and bouncing to a fielder and he’s escaped more jams than a deaf kid at Jazz Fest.  I wouldn’t sell him for an all-expenses paid spa day in Tijuana, but I’d explore options.

  1. Chavo says:
    (link)

    Imagine you are the manager of my team. Someone just offered you kinsler/ervin santana for your rickie weeks/weaver. Accept or spit in his face?

    • WhineSpritzer says:
      (link)

      @Chavo, another “depends”. Is your O strong and SP weak? If not, then don’t do it.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Chavo, Agree with Whine, but I’d lean towards Kinsler…

  2. Calogero says:
    (link)

    Speaking of LaHair…just got this offer in a 5×5 roto league (with 6 keepers year-to-year):

    Jay Bruce
    Asdrubal Cabrera
    David Price

    for

    Justin Upton
    Bryan LaHair
    Jordan Zimmermann

    I hate giving up the best player in a trade, and that’s Upton here, at least in this format. But do you think the rest of this deal makes it worthwhile?

    • WhineSpritzer says:
      (link)

      @Calogero, idk, kind of a wash. How does the other side benefit you? I’d rather have the Upton side.

      • Calogero says:
        (link)

        @WhineSpritzer, the reason I’m on the fence about it is that I’m currently starting a sort of trifecta of Lowrie, Bonifacio and Danny Murphy at SS and 3B until Longoria comes back.

        Also, Bruce is definitely a keeper and I think Cabrera and Price have a better chance at playing themselves into keeper contention/later trade value. My keepers this year were A-Gon, Longo, Cutch, Upton, Greinke and Hamels. So as of now neither would crack my keepers for next year, though it’s too early to know.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Calogero, I’d take the Bruce side…

  3. John says:
    (link)

    I was just looking at Bobby Abreu’s stats since joining the Dodgers. You think there is anything left in the tank? I see Mattingly has him in the 5th & 6th hole… anything to see here or just walk on by?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @John, Yeah, in NL-Only leagues there’s something there… I wouldn’t mess with him at this point in most mixed leagues…

  4. WhineSpritzer says:
    (link)

    Anyone sitting Gio today in Cincy….in a roto league with an innings cap?
    He’s due for a dud sometime. When’s it gonna be?!

    • Tom says:
      (link)

      @WhineSpritzer, I would start him, Reds offense hasnt looked that dangerous….yet.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @WhineSpritzer, I’d start him.

  5. Poo Holes says:
    (link)

    Think you could rank these closers? Dolis, Reed, Janssen, Soriano, Marlins Closer, Thayer.

    Oh wait, you already did? Oops.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Poo Holes, Ha

  6. golfnut says:
    (link)

    …..he’s escaped more jams than a deaf kid at Jazz Fest. I almost pissed my pants laughing at that one! BTW….Diana Krall too offense.

    Reddick or Dirks?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @golfnut, Rudy wrote that line… Dirks, but it’s close could go either way…

  7. Tom says:
    (link)

    Duda or Dirks? Duda has been hitting cleanup..although im sure he will get moved once davis is consistent.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Tom, Dirks

  8. Donkey Show says:

    Struggling O in an OBP league. Trade Capuano (corrections is imminent, right?) and Gallardo to get Mark Reynolds?

    I’ve got Latos coming back early next week, so I’m going to the need an extra slot, and I’ve got D. Hudson on the DL.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Donkey Show, Trade Gallardo for Reynolds? Nope…

      • Donkey Show says:
        (link)

        @Grey, Thanks for the quick response.

        Any thoughts on these other proposals? I’d love to get Reynolds ~35 HR (again, OBP league)

        These were all the proposed trades:
        Reynolds for Gallardo and Sandoval (not doing this…)
        Reynolds for Gallardo and Capuano
        Reynolds and Saunders for Capuano, Floyd and Sandoval
        Reynolds for Capuano and Ramirez

        • Donkey Show says:
          (link)

          @Donkey Show, To clarify, that’s A-Ram in the last line.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          @Donkey Show, Capuano, Floyd and Sandoval deal isn’t terrible…

          • Donkey Show says:
            (link)

            @Grey,

            Thanks. I’ll just take the hint and go back to the drawing board.

  9. Phil Brickma says:

    Brian’s Thong…hilarious! Where do you come up with this stuff?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Phil Brickma, Rudy wrote that line…

    • @Phil Brickma, thanks phil!

  10. Ryan says:

    Traded Lynn for Brandon Phillips the other day. You like?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Ryan, Yeah, solid…

  11. royce! says:

    I concur with the above posts lauding the hilarity. More succinctly, real funny shizz, Grey. Just when I thought you couldn’t get any more mileage out of Peacock!

      @royce!, Thanks!

  12. random razzball commenter says:
    (link)

    @Grey,

    You informed me not to Drop Aceves for the the closers below…what about dropping Boesch, Minor, or J.Parker for one of them? I already have two RP’s (Valverde/Aceves) in league with 2 starting RP spots and 6 total bench spots (only other bench bat is Trout). Available:

    Marshall
    Capps
    Reed
    Sale (recently dropped but status very murky)
    H.Alvarez (Blanton and Alvarez get 2 starts next week)
    Blanton

    Side note: Luke Scott and Torres are available as well.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @random razzball commenter, Lose Boesch for Marshall

  13. rob says:
    (link)

    Speculating in league with very little hitting on the WW – all of the names mentioned above are gone.

    Need to pick up an extra bat – who do you like for a bench/spot starter out of:

    Delmon Young, Jose Tabata, Colby Rasmus, Erick Aybar, or Alexi Ramirez?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @rob, Tabata

  14. jaw says:
    (link)

    trade my vance worley for josh johnson? JJ seems like a nice buy low with his huge era/fip difference

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      @jaw, I’d take Josh…

      • jaw says:

        @Grey, thanks for answering within 15 seconds of me posting the question, now thats service!

  16. letsgobravos says:
    (link)

    Hey Grey…

    I need a 2b. Started the year with Espinosa and dumped him for Casilla who has now apparently lost his starting job. The best WW option appears to be Inge. Would you pick him up or look for trade options? One team has both Kinsler and Kelly Johnson so I could target KJ. (despite the fact I drafted him last year and he fucked me royally) What kind of price would you be willing to pay for KJ right now?

    Another team has both Kipnis and Craig (but Craig has PT issues going forward, correct?) Pedroia and Altuve are both on the same team also.

    Here’s my current roster…

    C-Ruiz
    1b-Votto
    2b-Casilla
    3b-Beltre
    SS-Lowrie
    OF-Stanton
    OF-Pence
    OF-Stubbs
    Util-Lawrie
    Util-Scott
    Bn-Rios, Puma, Ultey (dl)

    SP- Gio, Peavy, Anibal, MadBum, Zimmerman, Cahill, Minor
    RP- Valverde, Street, Putz, Marshall

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @letsgobravos, He does have PT issues… I’d give Puma… Or Cahill or Minor, though those last two don’t seem likely… Or a closer…

      • letsgobravos says:
        (link)

        @Grey, Just to clarify, are you saying trade for Craig despite the PT issues or those are guys you’d trade for KJ?

        • WhineSpritzer says:
          (link)

          @letsgobravos, Are you asking for an example of a trade offer for any one of those guys? It all depends on how stupid the other guy is or how desperate you are for a 2B. Obviously try to move your back end SP first. You make it sound like you can trade your worst players easily for whoever you want. It usually doesn’t work like that. Make an offer and take it from there.

          • letsgobravos says:
            (link)

            @WhineSpritzer, No, that’s not what I’m saying. Just wanted grey’s thoughts on who I should target and what would be a reasonable price to pay. Follow up was just to clarify whether grey was referring to Craig or KJ.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          @letsgobravos, Those are the guys I’d give for Johnson… Craig could have PT issues…

          • letsgobravos says:
            (link)

            @Grey, Ok thanks a lot. I’ll let you know if I can make a deal.

  17. Dennis says:
    (link)

    I drafted LaHair in both of my fantasy leagues, and fairly early. The numbers were there and the Cubs had said they were goin to bat him cleanup.

  18. shibboleth says:
    (link)

    Gallardo and Chapman for McCutchen – giving up too much? 12 team roto with OBP/SLG/ QS/HLD. my team:

    2- uggla
    3/ci- aramis, laroche/johnson

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      @Joe Blow, I’d take Freese if I needed a 3rd baseman…

      • Joe Blow says:
        (link)

        @Grey, Ive got Bautista there, but would prefer to play him in OF, still hoping he comes around. Lahair currently manning UTL. Make a difference?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          @Joe Blow, Yeah, I’d take Freese…

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Votto von Bismark, Yup

  25. Goose says:
    (link)

    Wouldja drop Nieuwenhuis for Torres in an OBP league?

    Nieuwy seems to have cooled off, and he doesn’t hit lefties – but he still does something in the box score e’ery day, seems like.

    Thanks, mang!

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      @Goose, Yup…

  26. T.J. says:

    16-team mixed H2H 6×6 (OPS and QS), start 9 position players and 9 P, with a five-player bench and two DL slots (Yahoo!). I’m lacking power and hovering around .500 so far this season, waiting for Ellsbury to come back and J-Up and Corey Hart to wake up.

    My 1B right now are Chris Davis (who is also my only 3B; claimed him a couple weeks ago, just when he went in the tank), Gaby Sanchez (who has sucked all season), and Overbay (just claimed him). Ike Davis is available, as he was just waived. I drafted Gaby, as he was the only besides Ike who was much above replacement level. Should I claim Ike? If so, who should I drop?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      @T.J., Lose Overbay for Ike…

      • buster says:

          @buster, Sure, lose Rios…

  28. Captain Hindsight says:
    (link)

    I just sent a trade proposal of LaHair/Lance Lynn for Pujols/Gallardo

    The guy is in first place, w/o any contribution from Pujols/Gallardo. Only way he makes this trade is if he is mentally handicapped, but its worth a try.

  30. Mark says:
    (link)

    Sure, if you could sell LaHair as a .380-40 hitter, go ahead and sell, but unless you’re in a league full of people that were getting ready for Jeremy Lin’s basketball hall of fame induction ceremony a few months ago, no one’s buying that.

    ZiPS RoS has him going .277-21 in 447 PAs and Oliver RoS has him going .284-31 in 528 PAs, in both cases with the BABIP regressing but staying fairly high and the K% coming down a bit (both were also high on him coming into the year).

    Even before he got good in the minors, he never struck out this much. Once the balls stop falling in over half the time, he could easily tighten up his zone and have it around 25% with a .325 BABIP, which when combined with plus power, is still a respectable average.

    Split the difference and it’s basically .280-25 in 490ish PAs from here on out. Let’s even call that bearish and say it’s closer to .270-20.

    Not many people are going to buy him for more than that. If you’re selling him for .270-20 though, I’d listen in the right situations. I wouldn’t sell him for less than .280-25 though, and I haven’t found any takers anywhere near that price yet.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Mark, I think some people would buy him…

    • stumanji says:

    Brian’s Thong… so wrong.

    If you were to (have Rudy) crunch all the numbers, who do you think would be the most valuable fantasy player (standard 5×5 roto) in the live-ball era? 2001 Barry Bonds? ’73 Nolan Ryan? ’68 Denny McLain? ’41 DiMaggio?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      @Awesomus Maximus, I’d guess Bonds…

        @Grey, That’d be my first guess, but I wonder how 383 Ks (Ryan) would match up.

            Awesomus Maximus says:
            (link)

            @Grey, 313 Ks in ’99, but they came with 23 Ws, a 0.92 WHIP and a 2.07 ERA. Ryan’s 383 Ks in ’73 came with 21 Ws, a 1.23 WHIP and a 2.87 ERA. 70 more Ks, but the extra Ws and better ratios probably makes them pretty close.

            • Goose says:
              (link)

              @Awesomus Maximus,

              Koufax in ’65 had 382 Ks with a 0.85 WHIP and 2.04 ERA, 26 Ws. Best ever.

            • Steve says:
              (link)

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

        @Grey, I’d almost go DiMaggio…especially the way Yahoo LOVES batting average. However Bonds did hit .328 that year.

        • Wilsonian says:
          (link)

          @Wilsonian, then again, I was thinking that was when Joey D. hit .381. But it was .357. So I’d still probably go Bonds. But all those Ks from Nolan are tough to pass up. Good post, my man.

    • MattTruss223 says:
      (link)

      @Awesomus Maximus, I’ve always wondered this same thing and talked to people about it and I always make a case for ’82 or ’85 Ricky:

      ’82: 119/10/51/.267/130
      ’85: 146/24/72/.314/80

      I mean, in ’82 he’s worth 12 points in steals right off the bat, you’ve got that category wrapped up. Then, jsut how well-rounded he is in ’85. 146 Runs, 24 HRs, 72 RBIs, .314 and 80 SBs. He helps in EVERY CATEGORY!! It’d be a fun exercise.

      • Grey

          (link)

          @Grey, Right, 40 HRs was the league leader. Plus, Ricky’s just cool

    • Goose says:
      (link)

      @Awesomus Maximus,

      I think a fun idea would be doing a snake draft of all these great years.

      Like, Rd1, #1 overall someone takes ’85 Henderson, #2 goes ’01 Bonds, #3 goes ’21 Ruth (177 runs!), #4 ’65 Koufax (he goes above ’73 Ryan bc Koufax had a 0.85 WHIP and still K’d 382), #5 ’00 Pedro, etc etc. The trick is you have to fill out your roster like in regular roto, so where do ’83 and ’91 Ripken go, or ’97 Piazza, etc?

      And another question is: where do ’08 Rodriguez and ’90 Thigpen go? Does Grey advocate waiting for closers in this kind of draft, or do you try to dominate that category with some mid-round closer choices?

      I think that’d be fun both to participate in and see the results of.

      • Awesomus Maximus

        Awesomus Maximus says:
        (link)

        @Goose, I like it! I’d be up for a fun exercise like that. Could do the draft via email over the course of the ROS (not like the stats are changing, so there’s no rush to complete it).

    I have been playing Bautista all season and, surprise, I’m not doing well in the AVG department. Starting to get impatient, am I crazy for putting him on the bench in favor of Betemit until he shows signs of life?

    Also, when I asked a few days ago where Barry got his money, I was refering to Barry from Storage Wars. Do you know where his cash comes from? Very, very curious for some reason. I’m guessing the adult entertainment industry.

              @Eng, As I stated, it was a joke that I almost half thought would get accepted. It’s a small friends league. The guy is one of my best friends from law school. You guys are missing the point. It’s more a statement of how crazy this season is than anything. Not my shock and awe that it got shot down.

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

            @chata, He also has 9 more HRs and 20 more RBI than Pujols. That argument can go either way. My point was that it was a joke offer that I’d take if it happened. However it would appear that at this point I’d be losing the deal by a long shot.

    I don’t see it mentioned often so I assume many leagues don’t have this loophole. I’ve got Myers in an SP slot acting as a 4th closer. Even though I drafter no relievers (that I still have) I’m 11/12 for saves.

    Has anyone done the math on just how valuable a closer in an SP slot is? Give me an idea what round talent you’d trade Myers (or Aceves is the same) for?

    • Grey

        @Ethan,

        Our H2H league allows 2 RP spots and the rest are SP. I have 3 closers and everyone else has 2. So far, he’s won that category for me each week which has helped 5 games in the standings.

        Interesting, I like the Lester / Moore side. I would only be able to keep two of them and figured I would win in this deal if any of the following happened:

        1) Peavy injury / reversion
        2) that Lynn and Parker end up with a low 3 era
        3) that Lester and Moore end up with a low 3 era

    C-Ruiz
    1b-Votto
    2b-Casilla
    3b-Beltre
    SS-Lowrie
    OF-Stanton

    Grey, maybe you guys can have a separate thread for ridiculous trade ideas only. The worst comments have to be “Here’s my team…25 lines later….who should I trade for and what should I offer?”. And “who would you rather have, Player With Speed A or Player With Power B”. You should hire a grunt (pay him in beer) to answer those. Like, can’t you assess your own team needs based on, ya know, where you are in the standings?! You’re a stronger man than I Grey. Bah, I’m just ranting. Colin Cowherd drove me up a wall today. Carry on.

    I have Kendrick, Infante, Reyes, Rollins and Cozart on my 5×5 rotiss. Guy on league board just posted a plea for a 2B (he has only Ackley) and seems prime to overpay. Do you think Infante will keep this up all year, or would you sell high on him (provided the right price is met) and rely on Kendrick the rest of the way?

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      @thegreater, I’d trade away Infante…

    Grey, some fool dropped Longoria in my league. I had to make sure there wasn’t two Longorias playing baseball this year, but this one does play 3B for the Rays. My question to you is this: I have $68 FAAB left, how much do I drop on him? My team is solid and I don’t anticipate streaming players much, waiver claims only go through twice a week. I grabbed Ellsbury for $21 a couple weeks ago, but I don’t want to miss out on a top tier corner man.

    Thanks

    Instead of Giavotella, I think people should be getting ready to pounce on LAD Alex Castellanos (he’ll play 2b after conversion from OF). Later this month I hear. He’s one of those guys who was never pumped as a top prospect but rakes everywhere he goes. He should get the call soon. Power AND speed. This is a likely 20-20 guy. I pounced on Lawrie early last year before he got injured in the minors. Have a similiar feel about this guy. Grey your prospect guy has him as OFer, but he is now entrenched at 2B. He could play both on call up as LA needs both. Your guy highlighted him recently but passed him over in his prospect preview. Alex is under the radar juggernaut! I think he gets neglected cuz of his look/physique. He’s a creeper Freddo type of Italiano

        @Grey, his ERA will inevitably rise, BUT he pitches way better from the stretch. Watched his last outing. Bears down and mows em down when guys are in scoring position. Having him relieve last year has done wonders for his mental game.

    Would you deal LaHair, Masterson and Boesch for Teixeira and Haren? The one hang up is that this is a 16-team league where you can keep guy for three years at their current auction value. So, LaHair could be kept at $1 for the next two years if he pans out. Obviously, it’s early to talk about auction keepers though.

  85. Hi Grey — In a deep 16-team league where I grab possible closers for trade value (I’m leading the league in this category) who should I drop between Chishek and Casher? Or should I hold onto both for a bit longer? I want to drop one to grab Stauffer as a 6th SP.

        @Grey, yeah, the hand thing. I’m not sure if he’s fine…I know he sat Wednesday. I did a GoogleNews search and the only info I could find was that he’s “questionable” for tonight on pressboxonline.com. I guess if it were more serious there’d be more news about it? I guess eff it, I’ll grab him. If it does turn out to be serious AJ will probably still be on the wire after I drop him. Thanks Grey.

    Is it worth burning the #2 waiver spot to get Milone in my 12-team H2H league? Rest of SP rotation is:

    Bum
    J-Zimm
    Peav
    Cahill
    McCarthy
    Drabek (streamer)
    D Hudson (DL)

    Supplementary question #1 – should I also hang on to Drabek? I have other guys I can drop to get Milone.

    Supplementary #2 – Should I skip Milone and go straight to Peacock?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Steve, I’d lose Drabek for Milone… I don’t think that’s a league deep enough that you need to grab Peacock right this instance, but you would know better…

He just gave up 15 runs in his past two starts and one outting was vs PIT!!!! please dont do that trade, it makes me sick…. cespedes is batting .245 with 5 HR’s, grey did you just hit the cheeba before saying yes to that? Im confused.

  110. Macgregor says:
    (link)

    So I’ve got LaHair in a 12-team league and have been trying to unload him. My other outfielders are Kendrick, Victorino, Markakis, and Hart (Brett Gardner, Jayson Werth and Carlos Quintin on DL). SPs are Feliz, Garcia, Bass, Dempster, Lynn, Volquez, Fister and Niemann.

    I’ve been offered Wainwright and Colon for LaHair and Volquez.

    I kinda want to run away with it. The guy is short for batting and there isn’t much to ask for instead of Colon, who I don’t really want. What’s your take on Wainwright for the rest of the year?

    What do you think? Thanks again.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Macgregor, Not a huge fan of Waino, I’d prefer others, but I think you’d win that trade…

      • Macgregor says:
        (link)

        @Grey, Any reason you’re down on Wainwright? He seems like a buy-low to me at this point.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          @Macgregor, There’s so many great pitchers I’d prefer not to own one coming back from such major surgery but he is rounding into form of late…

          • Macgregor says:
            (link)

            @Grey, Got it. I’ve been aggresively trying to trade LaHair for the past week, expecting Gardner or Quintin to fill his spot soon (though Gardner swelled that hope shut), and Wainwright has been the best I’ve seen offered. I figured if I made the trade I’d just try and move Lynn while he’s hot for the most stable starter I could find. Either that or just go all-out and trade for the entire Cardinals bullpen.

    Robertson comes into clean up a non save situation… does this swing things towards Soriano at all you think?

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

      @chunk, Not in the least. Girardi said before the game that Soriano wasn’t playing tonight due to recent workload and any late inning relief in a close game was Robertson’s. If anything, it helped Robertson.

      • chunk says:
        (link)

        @Wilsonian, thanks

        • Wilsonian says:
          (link)

          @chunk, No problem. I just really think it’s Robertson’s to lose. He has the better stuff. He just needs the mindset and confidence. I’m thinking an outing like this would get his mind back in the right place and might help in the long run.

          • chunk says:
            (link)

            Agreed, just added Soriano though so I’m doing what Grey says and giving it a week. The potential reward is well worth it.

            • Wilsonian says:
              (link)

              @chunk, I don’t blame you. If you can pick him up and give it a few days before things iron themselves out, then definitely do it. I may do the same once he clears waivers. I did exactly that when Sale was having his “MRI” and snagged Reed. Hopefully I reap the benefits of that move.

  112. Steve says:

    You’ve got to be kidding me. I’d owned Boggs for about two weeks. A hold the first time i used it and nothing (except crappy outings since).

    Braun just gets plunked in the back after Weeks got hit on the pitch before. There’s obviously no intent, it’s a tie game in the 14th. However, Braun’s reaction was that of a 2-year old. He flips his bat over his shoulder and walks slowly all the way to 1st. I lost some respect for him there. I don’t give a shit if you’re the MVP. It hit his back. Just take your damn base. You shouldn’t even be playing. You got lucky on damn technicality and shoulda missed the 1st 50 games.

    Morning the grey(t) one. I have Ackley agita in my 10 team keeper so you can guess im trying to trade for a 2B. Im taking a liking for Kipnis ($0) particularly at his current keeper price, but despite this doode saying both are available, hes trying to push me onto the so-far awful R Weeks.

    Is Peav if not then Gio worth tempting him for Kipnis? I have 7 good starters (+Minor), and dont think I wanna go any higher (Cain, Bum, Lester territory). Kip would likely be a very nice keeper as I could keep him for next year at $6 and following year for $9. Thoughts?

    • TheNewGuy says:
      (link)

      @TheNewGuy, Ackleys my only starting 2B too, and as you know 2B is a graveyard on the wire, thats why im thinking of pushing the boat out with this one and trading from an area of excess.

      • @TheNewGuy, I’m looking for Weeks advice, but just wanted to say I kinda like Gio for Kipnis even though you could be trading away the next Halladay if Gio keeps making the big strides. Then again, maybe Kipnis is the next Utley. Is there a start cap in your league? If so that devalues starters and makes Kipnis more valuable.

        • TheNewGuy says:
          (link)

          @The Miracles, Yep there is an innings cap limit.

          Thanks dude and Grey too, Ill try the Peav first but wont be afraid to go to Gio if needed. Kipnis is looking like a rising star this year, and at 2B that spells fantasy awesomeness.

    Ventura’s at it again! Back to the committee!

    “Addison’s done well, so you probably look for him if they have a bunch of righties coming up,” Ventura said. “You probably look for Matty if they have a bunch of lefties coming up. If it’s a mix, we’ll probably have Hector.”

    How did I miss that Hector Santiago throws with both hands?!!

    In all seriousness, Ventura needs to chill the hell out, step back from what he somehow learned was “managing,” and let the best pitcher close. Considering that Reed has been better against all hitters, including lefties, I would conclude that Reed is that pitcher. Then again, I’m not some fancy major league manager; I’m just a country lawyer. Okay, fine, I’m a city lawyer, but still, Reed should be closing.

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

      @royce!, I’m a country lawyer and I concur. He’s off his rocker. You put your best arm there. Reed is by far the best arm. I really have no words for him besides that.

    • Moscowitz says:
      (link)

      @royce!, absolutely right, Ventura is taking himself a bit to seriously. He looks like a guy who might consider himself thinking ahead of the game. I mean its pretty obvious who the best pitcher in that bullpen is. As i said a couple of days ago, just let Reed close games and give him a reasonable leash and dont remove him after two blown saves, build up his confidence and this kid will be a stud closer for years to come. shop thornton at some point and use Santiago, Crain and others play it out as long relievers, setup men or what the heck ever.

      The egoistic part of me though likes Venturas idiotic decision regarding this closer issue. I own Sale but not Reed. Reed is owned by my this weeks opponent and the less closing chances he gets, the less saves for my opponent :)

      @Wilsonian, Yeah, it’s kinda crazy… Bench Pujols for Trumbo!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Wilsonian, Honestly, as crazy as it sounds, I think the Angels would be doing better if they didn’t sign Pujols.

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

        @Grey, I totally agree.

        I’m smackdab in the middle in Cardinals’ country and most of them, while pissed that Pujols left after he said he didn’t want to play anywhere else, make a good point: siging him for what he wanted would’ve tied their hands for years and would end up being a worse deal for them. I agree with that. And I think it’s going to do the same to the Angels. I didn’t understand the signing. He’s not what they needed and as of right now they would be a better team with Trumbo at 1st and Kendrys DHing.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          @Wilsonian, Yeah…. One team that really didn’t need him was the Angels and now they have heightened expectations.

          VinWins says:
          (link)

          @Wilsonian, Might have had something to do with the big TV money – they had to sign a “name.”

          • Wilsonian says:
            (link)

            @VinWins, Yeah, I could see that. Still not a great signing even if he returns to his usual Pujols-ness. He’s a Latin 32, meaning he’s at least 35. And signing him to 10 years is insane.

            • VinWins

              VinWins says:
              (link)

              @Wilsonian, Yeah, I’m against giving anyone a 10-yr contract, let alone someone in his 30s. I certainly was not disappointed when the Cards didn’t give him that. Though I think there was no way he was playing with St Louis after they “insulted” him with their lesser offer.

              • Wilsonian says:
                (link)

                @VinWins, Definitely. I’m a Cubs fan and I think that deal ended up working out for the Cardinals. Especially the way the King of the Zombinos, Beltran, is playing.

                • chata says:
                  (link)

                  @Wilsonian,

                  the other half of the “equation” is that scioscia is a chicken-shizz manager .
                  who knows ? maybe he’s just a front and has no say .

                  but did you see that line-up for today’s cj game ??
                  trout , callaspo , bourjos and aybar !
                  as if scoiscia would know how to handle a running game , in the 1st place .

                  2ndly , dim-weed , you just put your big boys … trumbo , kendrys , pujols … in the freaking line-up , and let the opposing pitchers forget about the little guys , in-between .
                  how hard is that ???

                  maybe he’s smart enough to “hide behind the trees” and stay out of harm’s way , while punching his time-clock ,
                  BUT , on the scovil scale , given what’s out there , i’m rating him about a 2 .
                  even bochy is more exciting , and he certainly isn’t on the
                  leyland /washington tier .

    • james d says:

      @Razztastic, that’s not unreasonable value-wise but there’s no reason to take that trade unless your team “needs” it because of how little you’re getting for Lynn

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      @Razztastic, I’d take F-Her…

    Smoak
    Robot
    Gaby

    I’m leaning Smoak for now. I have Rizzo laying in wait and I don’t want to drop him, but I may have to make a deal to stay in the hunt (if being 15/16 is in the hunt).

    • Grey

      @Wilsonian, Not great… I’d probably just slide in Smoak…

    Grey-

    I need 4 innings in a H2H matchup and we’re tied right now.

    Im tied in wins and losses, I can’t really give up any walks or HR’s and i’ve got these guys going:

    Sale vs KC
    Wainy vs ATL
    Jzimm @ Cin

    Odd/Nasty/Scary matchups. I wanna throw sale bc its vs KC, but he was almost DL’d/sent to Dr. Freese. What do you think? Wainy’s what I consider my ace and had a good last outting, ATL is no joke tho, and Jzimms last outting was scary plus vs CIN at CINCY!?

        @Grey, well tomm I have samardjza at MIL, not exactly promising. I’ve got a shit ton of RP’s/closers/POS’s! but counting on 4 innings tonight out of them? scary.

        Plus my opponent is throwing cain, so I kind of need to match him. Like I said we’re tied in wins and losses im up by 2 HR’s and 2BB, so if I throw all 3 Im essentially giving up walks, HR’s, i mean its a coin flip to pick who, but throwing all 3 gives me lots of chances to lose multiple categories…. if ya had to pick one, who would it be? LOL this is my league… this is how it rolls….

    With Yoenis on the DL, I think I’m stuck with a dead UTIL spot until Krispie gets back. Seriously, there’s no one on my roster I want to drop in my 12-team keeper:

    Napoli
    Prince
    Hill
    Aramis
    Andrus
    BP
    M Young
    CarGo, Braun, Harper, Trout, Torres
    Krispie, Yoenis, Utley

    F-Her, J-Z, Beachy, eJax, Parker, Volqeuz
    Casilla, Rodney, HanK Rod, Dolis, Janssen

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Awesomus Maximus, Eh, I’d probably drop Utley, but I could why you wouldn’t.

      • Awesomus Maximus

        Awesomus Maximus says:
        (link)

        @Grey, That’s the only option I’ve given any consideration to. My optimistic side thinks that if Utley takes his time coming back, he can put up good numbers in the second half.

        The other issue is that my league counts Ks and OPS… so there are 3 categories (those 2, plus AVG) that your average replacement player will most likely hurt you, as opposed to just one category (AVG) in your standard league. It makes missing a week of (probably) lackluster counting stats seem like not such a terrible thing.

  200. Jon says:
    (link)

    Is Arrieta a good start tomorrow? I’ve got Ks wrapped up and a solid lead in Ws, ERA and WHIP, but my opponent has Hamels pitching so I mainly just don’t want to lay an egg.

      @Random Collmenter, Prince was a top 10 player (top 5 1B) before the season started. Verlander was outside of the top 20. Has the former been that bad, or the latter been that incredible, to completely flip those rankings mid-May? Not to me.

      I would take the Lee trade, though.

    I give Capuano, J-Zimmerman and marshall. I get Joey Votto.

    For RP’s I already own Kenley, Myers, Reed and Cishek for 3 slots. For starters I have Yovanni, Max, anibal, Smyley, Latos and Worley.

            @Grey,

            this just in , from mlb.com :

            “CHICAGO — Royals left-hander Danny Duffy was pulled with an unknown injury in the first inning of Sunday’s game against the White Sox after facing only three batters.

            Duffy, 23, struck out leadoff hitter Brent Lillibridge before walking second baseman Gordon Beckham. Duffy then got Adam Dunn to fly out to center field before exiting.

            Right-hander Luis Mendoza replaced Duffy on the mound.

            Duffy, a third-round pick in the 2007 Draft, threw only 13 pitches. He entered Sunday with a 2-2 mark and a 4.00 ERA in five starts.”

    My team that started out 24-4 the first two weeks is getting murdered again this week for the third time in 4 weeks. Pretty amazing to go from 20 games over .500 to under .500 this fast. Offense has been pathetic with Pujols sucking dick and puma, krispie and gardner on the shelf. When all 3 return, I will have a surplus # of OFers so I’ll either have to drop 2 or make a deal.

    I have 4 closers and my opponent this week only has 1 closer and says he wants to trade for a second. I’m 2nd in the league for the season in saves so I’m not sure if I should sacrifice a strength to try and shore up other areas. After floundering for 4 weeks though, maybe its time to make a move to stop the bleeding. Here’s my roster and his, would love grey or anyone else’s thoughts on ideas for a trade…

    C-Montero
    1b- The greatest player of all time who now sucks ass
    2B-Kinsler
    3B-Lawrie
    SS-Cozart
    OF-McCutchen
    OF-Choo
    OF-Puma
    Util-Scott
    Bn-Parra
    Bn-Reddick
    DL-Gardner
    DL-Krispie

    SP- Wilson, Price, Gio, Scherzer, Cahill, Minor, McDonald
    RP-Aceves, Myers, Downs, Frankity Frank Frank

    His team…(Hamilton and Beltran single handily beat my offense this week)

    C-Molina
    1b-Napoli
    2b-Zobrist
    3B-Freese
    SS-Reyes
    OF-Hamilton
    OF-Beltran
    OF-LaHair
    Util-Ortiz
    Bn-Jeter
    DL-Morse

    SP-Verlander, Peavy, Kennedy, Becket, Ogando, Westbrook, Hammel, Miley, Lynn, Zambrano,

    RP-Cordero
    ——–

    Something like Berkman + a closer for Peavy is really the only thing that jumps out at me and I have no idea if he’d accept that…and my problems have been primarily on offense so that does nothing to help me there. I doubt he will part with Beltran and I don’t really want to trade for a SS so I’m sort of at a loss. Maybe the best move is to trust my draft, cut Parra and grab a WW SP and then wait for my team to get healthy. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @letsgobravos, Can try that for Peavy… Yeah, cut Parra, and depending on the size of the league can cut Minor… Can play Reddick over Choo… Can try to trade Choo and Berkman (or some combo) for Reyes…

        @Grey, Its a 12 team league…is it time to cut bait on Minor? He’s been miserable his last few starts. Haven’t been following the article comments closely this week so I missed it if you already ran up the white flag on him.

          @letsgobravos, I haven’t talked about him, but I dropped him in a 12 team league…

            @Grey,

            Ah, gotcha. I just offered puma + Choo + Aceves for Reyes…fair or am I giving up too much with a 3 for 1? If he turns that down, I’ll try Puma + Aceves for Peavy.

              (link)

              @letsgobravos, …follow up, how sold are you on Reddick right now? I know you had him in your buys, but just wondering where you see him the rest of the way. Top 100 overall? Care to offer a projection on him?

                  (link)

                  @Grey, Ok, thanks. Wasn’t sure if you were amending your projection based on his performance thus far.

    Is there a website that keeps tally of how many line up changes over the dourse of last year and this year? I am in a heated debate that Scoiopath changes his lineups more than Maddon. I might be on the losing side here but wanted to know if anyone knew where I might find that info. thanks

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Carl Spackler, I’m not sure if there’s something that tallies that… I agree with you but Maddon also changes his lineup a lot…

      • Carl Spackler says:
        (link)

        @Grey, Ya I know right…… I feel like every time I look at that Angels line up Howie is on the friggin bench, or Aybar is getting replaced with Macier, or Ianetta sets for some other cather no one has heard of. My thing is I feel like Maddon changes the lineup only if his players are hurt ie Longo, BJ. Again, I dont follow the Rays as much as the Angels but just seems that way.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          @Carl Spackler, Maddon just juggles his lineup… He also ‘studied’ under The Sciosciapath so there’s something there…

    With the very slight chance that Luebke comes back next year, do you drop Pineda and keep him? Or is it worth waiting a few more days to get the official news and if Luebke is out for the season, drop him and stash Pineda?

    Seen sum1 with trumbo love the other day just wanna touch base again… He just hit a 470 footer first pitch off feliz. I drafted him thinkin he was gettin playin time but the almighty grey said he was platoonin so i scraped em… The dude is a monster tho. Hes been damn solid over the last week or so and this random razzer said “all trumbo does is hit homers”.. which is absolutely true and you gotta love the potential. Do you think he has a chance at everyday playin time? Its kinda like my boy allen craig, all he does is hit so how could you let him ride pine for more than 2 days a week. Does it really take a friggin rocket scientist to see that this guy produces and deserves a shot at reg PT?

    • Wilsonian says:

        @Grey,

        who’s the manager that you criticize for keeping the same line-up ,
        and just plugging in the sub in the same spot in the order ?

        seems to me , scioscia could go no worse by following that plan .
        break up the lumber … say 3-5-7 … maybe kendrys /pujols/trumbo
        and plug the other guys in-between .
        play small ball at the top of the order , and break up the double play
        slugs .

        heck , look at that rangers line-up .
        they have napoli and cruz down in the 7/8 slots .
        not a lot of manoeuvre room for opposing pitchers , especially when
        they start sprinkling in a few bb’s here and there .

        cust .

        • Prezii says:

              @chata, Ah well. I’m actually up 7-3 in my matchup, just looking to pad the margin of victory.

    According to Olney on Twitter, Hamilton has used the same bat for all his HRs this week.

        @royce!, Not so much – he broke it in his last AB.

        I’m breathing down your neck! (thanks to Josh)

          @Steve, Whatever, you’d be nothing without Yonder!

            @royce!, I love that guy. I have him on two other teams as well. His stolen base today was a very pleasant surprise.

              @Steve, Wow, I missed that he stole a base. Did they have to take a commercial break during it?

                @royce!, Apparently the second baseman was distracted by the snail who was racing ahead of Yonder.

    Espinosa’s finally showing some signs of life…is it time to pick him up or do we need to see him sustain it for a few more days? I have a gaping hole at 2b, drafted Espinosa, dropped him a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been shuffling shitty players since then trying in vain to find someone decent.
