I watched the first episode of Mad Men and was bored. Then two years later everyone’s saying it’s the best show on TV, so maybe I should’ve stayed with it. Oh well. I’m gonna have to rent it. The girlfriend doesn’t want to see that either. This weekend we saw “Baby Mama.” It was the only thing we could agree on. Afterwards, we also agreed it was stale crap.

@Grey: Dunno if you’re a doco guy or not – given you’re into non-fiction you might very well be – but the World At War is probably the definitive accounnt of World War Two and well worth checking out. Hugely expensive in its day. Stature of the progamme? It was narrated by Olivier.

@Steve: Ted Knight was a brilliant comedic actor in everything he did. I was legitimately sad when a few people I didn't know personally have died -- Ted Knight and Peter Sellers were two.

For some reason I just thought of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. I used to love that. Probably still do. Ted Baxter was a brilliant character. I’ve done a little work in TV news and he’s not a million miles from reality.

@Grey: It could just be the way we see things here but it has only been relatively recently (last 10 years or so?) that the US has come to be seen as a source of top quality TV drama.

We have generally looked to Britain for that. Just to prove that point, possibly my favourite TV series of all time is The World At War (26-part doco series on WWII) – made in England in 1973! 2nd favourite probably Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.

Heard of either of them?

@Steve: No, of course not. It's not necessary, but I suggest you start from the beginning of Season 1 with The Wire, if you can. If not, then start at least from the beginning of one of the seasons.

@Steve: No, it’s not that. There’s just no conflict or it’s resolved very quickly. It’s like eating marshmallows for dinner. They’re delicious. Who doesn’t love a marshmallow? But do you want marshmallows for dinner? The show’s kinda fluffy. Most people like the show more than me, so there’s that.

Have you seen The Wire? Now that’s a show. Or The Pickup Artist. Which I still haven’t seen for this week, so no one ruin it.
