@Grey: I had jury duty only once. My lucky ass got into the "random" 12 man pool and I was set to be on the jury. But, I obviously didn't want to be there, so while the attorneys were screening the other potential jurors, I just put my hands behind my head, rocked back in forth in my chair and was as disrespectful as possible without saying a word. My bad body language got me excused from jury duty and I will stick to that routine if I ever have to again. You should try that if you become so unlucky. BTW, hello!

@Steve: I've been called three times. The first two I ignored because a friend of mine said if it's not registered mail you can say you never got it. But then that made me feel guilty so now I'm just going to call and hope they don't need me. Yeah, like that song too -- the first minute or so then I was done with it. @royce!: I don't have an answer but I think it's flawed that they make up juries with people who can't wait to get out of there. @Grey: Oh, and in reaction to Steve's prodding, as much as I think being on a jury must blow, we need more intelligent, nonjudgmental (I was going to say non-prejudiced, but I don't mean non-racist, I mean people who won't look at a guy and say, "well, he looks like a drug dealer, so he probably possessed that pot for sale) people on juries. Once a jury finds someone guilty, it is very, very difficult to get that judgment reversed, so it's important for people to take that responsibility seriously. But in my opinion, there are many many people who should never have been convicted and shouldn't be in jail. In California, the prison guards' union, and the prison system generally, makes a ton of money off incarcerating as many people as possible, and they have a ton of political pull. One of the counterweights to their nonsense are reasonable jurors.

Ken Burns' The 10th Inning is on tonight, for those who haven't seen it yet. @Grey: I never sat on a jury, and now that I'm a criminal defense attorney, I expect to never have to. I actually wish that I could, because it would be helpful to see how a jury deliberates. But, to commiserate with your plight, I still get jury duty, and have to standby as if I wouldn't be challenged for cause. Once I get called down, it takes about half a day or more for them to go through the process of my inevitable elimination.
