Emilio Bonifacio was activated from the disabled list last week. Entering Sunday’s slate he’d recorded a hit in each of his games since his return and threw in a steal for good measure. Part of Bonifacio’s charm is his position flexibility. He’s eligible at both second base and outfield in ESPN leagues. He’s a nice option for steals with 14 stolen bases in 282 plate appearances. With Arismendy Alcantara able to play the outfield and Bonifacio really able to play anywhere, he should see regular playing time. At this point, Bonifacio is owned in less than 20% of leagues, but his ownership jumped 5% in the last week. Now’s a good time to add him if some of the other SAGNOF options in your league have been taken. In 10-teamers he’s a stretch, but for 12-team leagues and deeper I’d look to add Bonifacio and use him as a solid bench bat similar to what Danny Santana brings to the table. For this week, Bonifacio has a full schedule of seven games against the Rockies and Dodgers. The Rockies have allowed 59 stolen bases this season (17th in MLB) but as a commentator pointed out last week they have caught a league-worst 15% of base stealers. The Dodgers have allowed 60 stolen bases on the season (16th in MLB). Here are some other steals options for this week in 2014 fantasy baseball…

Anthony Gose, OF – @BOS, @HOU

The Blue Jays have shuffled their lineup around due to injuries, giving Anthony Gose some more opportunities. Nolan Reimold is returning so it is worth monitoring how that has an effect on Gose’s playing time. He had a mini steals outburst last week with four stolen bases in two games against the Red Sox. While the 25-year-old outfielder has nine steals on the season, he’s also been caught four times. This week the Blue Jays draw the Red Sox and Astros again. Not only did Gose’s big games come against the Sox last week, but the Astros have allowed 69 stolen bases this season (7th most in MLB). Scott Feldman is scheduled to take the mound against the Jays on Sunday. He’s allowed the second most steals in baseball (21).

Danny Santana, SS/OF and Sam Fuld, OF – @KC, @CWS

The trade of Kendrys Morales opens up the outfield for Santana and Fuld to get regular starts. Both have speed. Fuld is hitting only .254 on the season, but he has a .340 OBP with 12 stolen bases in just 215 plate appearances. Santana has appeared in this column before. He has hit well since returning from the DL but hasn’t stolen a base yet (he did atttempt one though). Given that his injury was his knee, it’s good to see the attempt but it could be a while for him to get up to full speed and get the timing back. Still the 23-year-old outfielder is a nice pickup and makes a great bench bat with both shortstop and outfield eligibility. Fuld and Santana seem to be splitting the leadoff duties for the Twins at the moment, but from this point forward I’d expect Santana to receive the lion’s share of time leading off. The Royals have allowed only 38 steals this season which makes them a tough draw to run against. The White Sox are more in the middle of the pack with 56 steals allowed (17th most in baseball).

Someone just dropped Josh Harrison in my H2H 10 team league. Do I drop Jed Lowrie for him ROS?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I’d still prefer Lowrie for the long haul. Harrison does some great stuff like last night, but I think Lowrie is the better play.

    • fausto says:
      (link)

@Slowmez: for the love of sagnof grab him. ….i grabbed a month ago and refuse to drop. In Y! Hes 2b,3b, of elig too and with marte hurt and no timetable for return harrison will get on the field. ..grab.

      • fausto says:
        (link)

@fausto: im biased I own lowrie and harrison. I m biased. I should have prefaced my comment with that. I just love a guy thats capable of so many positions……er. ..I mean…. yeah.

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

ha! yup, he’s really useful with the flex and you’re right he’ll play more while Marte is out.

  2. JP says:

I have a glut of OF’s and I need to clear space for more pitching coming in. Don’t think I can swing a trade for any of them. Who should I drop: Rios, Gordon, or K. Davis?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

yikes, tough call. I guess Gordon.

  3. Joe says:

My starting pitching is a problem, as my team is consistently coming up short in the win, strikeout, and ERA categories. My current rotation is Bumgarner, Verlander, Hudson, Roark, Hammel, and Odorizzi (who, with his 124 K’s, immediately became my second-best strikeout pitcher when I picked him up yesterday). On waivers I’m looking at Danny Duffy, Chris Young, and Wily Peralta. Wily has 12 wins and counting, while the other two are both in the top 130 of all eligible players, according to the Yahoo rankings. Polanco, Hosmer, and Crisp are pissing me off to end, and given my pitching struggles, I’m thinking of a roster shake up. Thoughts? Thanks, you guys are great

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      anytime..I’d add Duffy.

tough to say who to drop without knowing your other options or your offensive needs. My gut says Hosmer though.

  5. fausto says:

Mike. Thinking bout dropping Loney for Lorenzo Cain for sagnof. I have gomez, brantley span harrison. Rizzo would be my only 1b option until/if edwin and springer come back….id have to slot him @util. Hes the best avail fo sb plus hes a 4 cat guy compared to EYJ types. Rizzo never takes a game off so I think im good in dropping Loney. What say you?

    • fausto says:
      (link)

@fausto: J.D. Martinez hit waivers. Is he riding off into the sunset or you like him over cain? (Obviously not going to solve my sb issue). But he had been raking before he was bitten by a quadrasaurus.

      • fausto says:
        (link)

@fausto: sorry this is turning into a novel im a big fan of the sagnof wrteups. My sb guys are gomez, brantley, span, alcantera, harrison, and sometimes seager runs against the wind.
Lorenzo cain over loney(rizzo @1b? Edwin on shelf).

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

          haha no worries. anytime.

I’d be fine with Cain over Loney if you need some steals.

@Mikecain it is thanks for all sagnof resarching you do.

              • goodfold2 says:
                (link)

@Mike: cain over loney for pretty much everything, unless aoki dokie starts cutting into playing time (which could happen). but even then it’ll probably hurt dyson more (who’s more properly called SAGNOF, both due to his speed and fantasy irrelevance elsewhere)

  6. Mean Thumb says:

    Pick 3:

    Segura, Lowrie, Holt, Bonifacio

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I’d still go with the first three. Boni more of a bench bat/SAGNOF play

  7. Simon says:
    (link)

Is it time to drop Alcides Escobar for Bonifacio? Escobar isn’t doing anything recently.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I’d rather have Escobar, personally, but it depends I guess on the depth of your league and what will be out there for you if Boni goes cold.

  8. Goose! says:
    (link)

I have Verlander and Peavy (just picked up for Ryan Zimmerman), and noticed Marcus Stroman is sitting there on the FA list.

Its a 12 team keeper league h2h category wins. Pitching categories are W, HR allowed, Ks, ERA, WHIP, NSVH.

Rest of my staff is: Sale, Keuchel, Bailey, Salazar, deGrom, Harvey in the DL slot.

    Should I pick up Stro?

Here’s what the offense looks like (if you think I shouldn’t drop any of those pitchers for some reason but should still pick him up): http://i.imgur.com/XMZZ9mz.png?1

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

I’d take Stroman over Peavy, especially in a keeper

Mike, good read! need some help…should i drop Soria for one of these pitchers…Feliz, Rondon, Petricka, Lindstrom or should i hold?

    Thanks!!

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

Thanks! I’m not totally up to speed on the bullpens, but Petricka and Rondon currently have the closer role while Soria is setting up Nathan, right?

I might lean Rondon. With Ramirez getting optioned there doesn’t seem to be a threat to his job. I’d rather get a handful from him than wait on my hands for Soria to take the gig from Nathan. Hope that makes sense.

      • Bull in a Chinese Restaurant says:
        (link)

@Mike: not sure if ramirez was ever a threat (unless rondon completely started to suck), but i also hear ramirez will be back soon. just innings limiting (this is how smart wunderkind is, and how much they like him, if they are limiting innings to a RP)

@Pewter City: Melvin said he’ll probably play him on Wednesday…too bad though, I would have LOVED to seen him run on Feldman tomorrow. I may pick him up just for shits

      • Mike

        Mike says:
        (link)

Burns vs Feldman, yeah that would have been interesting!

I think Crisp is nicked up still with the neck and that could give him some looks. Cool stuff Maxi

  11. jim says:

Thanks Mike. I have castellanos in a deep league and need some help. I’m running him at UTIL but he hasn’t been great this year. Would you try and trade him? If so, who would be a couple of players to target? Thx.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

not sure who’s out there in your league or what your needs are…but this is normal for rookies like Bogey and Castellanos. He’s a tough sell in redrafts. Might net something in keepers though.

      • jim says:
        (link)

@Mike: Was thinking about offering him for jed lowrie or rutledge or gyorko. Do you like any of these trades? In what order would you offer these?

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

I would rather have Casty than Gyorko. Rutledge is interesting if Tulo is out for an extended period. Sounds like you have a MI need and Lowrie is good for a few dingers and RBI from that spot. Not sure he’ll do that much more damage tahn Casty, but it’s easier to replace Casty at corner thaan it is to find a MI with 50 RBI

  12. Lou says:
    (link)

Hey Mike! Who has the best keeper value for next year? C Gomez in 5th, Springer in 15th or Cespedes in 17th?

And which of those keepers would u trade to get for Ellsbury & Soria? 1st & 2nd choices..thx

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

      Hi Lou,

Value-wise, I gotta think it’s Springer in the 15th followed by Cespedes in the 17th. Gomez is fantastic as well, but there isn’t as big a discrepancy between his production and the round kept as with the others, and you’re asking best value.

Springer, Cespedes, Gomez is the order I’d put them

      • Lou says:
        (link)

@Mike: Thx Mike! It’s a tough call because I was already offered Cespedes for Ellsbury , but I’m not in love with him as a keeper.

Best 2 keepers: Yelich in 21, Springer in 15 or Cespedes in 17 ??

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

          anytime.

man, those are all great values. I’d still go with Springer and Cespedes though

          • Lou says:
            (link)

@Mike: thanks mike, I know tough call right…I already own Yelich in 21…if I trade for Springer or Cespedes, I would only be able to keep 1 of Yelich or Springer/Cespedes. As I can only keep 5 and my other keepers are:
            Harper 15
            d Gordon 10
            Harvey 12
            Ventura 20

            What should I do?

            • Mike

              Mike says:
              (link)

I would consider only keeping one of the two arms. How pitching heavy is the league? If it was me, I’d consider trying to make this happen for my five keeps if it’s possible…

              Harper 15
              Gordon 10
              Springer 15
              Cespedes 17
              Yelich 21

              • Lou says:
                (link)

@Mike: thanks. Owner now said springer not available. So it’s Ellsbury for Cespedes. And I need to choose which 5 keepers to keep

                • Mike

                  Mike says:
                  (link)

of course! (maybe he reads Razzball hehe)

still like the value you are getting in Cespedes

  13. Hey Mike,

Curious for your opinion, can you rank for AL Only keeper League?

Lester, Stroman, Bauer, Salazar, CJ Wilson, Rubby De La Rosa, Henry Owens, Elias

As always, thanks for all the great writing.

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

anytime. thanks! that’s a big list to rank but here goes…

Lester…Stroman…Bauer/Wilson…Elias/RDLR/Salazar…Owens (putting him last since he’s a prospect still and don’t know what kind of farm you carry over)

      • @Mike: can keep 4 minor league guys, so he’s definitely gonna be kept. So do you think Bauer is better then Salazar for the next five years? Thanks again!

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

cool, def keep Owens in that case. Yeah if I had to choose one it would be Bauer over Salazar. Lester/Stroman/Bauer with Owens in the minors is a decent little group to keep there IMO.

  14. Lou says:
    (link)

Mike – last one for ya…was just offered Rizzo (9th round keeper next year) for Ellsbury.

Which keeper u like better for Ellsbury , RIzzo in 9th or Cespedes in 17th?

    • Mike

      Mike says:
      (link)

Rizzo, and it’s not close IMO

      • Lou says:
        (link)

        @Mike: Thanks Bud!

        • Lou says:
          (link)

          @Lou: U luv Rizxo huh?!?

          • Mike

            Mike says:
            (link)

anytime. he’s young, hits for power, and comes at a discount in the 9th round. he’s everything I would want in a keeper. Plus the Cubs are only going to get better inthe net year or two IMO

    thanks

I like Rios over Ajax, yes. Not sure the difference between them is Arrieta but I don’t know what your other arms look like.

would you give up yelich for a. russell ?
    thanks Mike .

tough one. I think I would. Russell is going to stick at SS and having that position locked down in dynasty is pretty nice.

Mike would you trade mat adams and sonny gray or Gio González for David price? The guy wants mat adams and a pitcher but i dont want to give him Zack grienke or julio Teherán or jake arrieta

      sure, If needed the ace

      • Joe says:

@Mike: which pitcher you put in the combo Gio González or sonny gray?

        • Mike

          Mike says:
          (link)

          probably Gray

          • Joe says:
            (link)

@Mike: so mat adams and sonny gray for David price is fair not to much for the ace? Right

            • Mike

              Mike says:
              (link)

I don’t think so, no.. You can play the hot hands at corner. Price is legit and I’m not sure how they will handle Gray in Septmeber to be honest
