Josh Donaldson is fired. As in, he’s been on fire since last August and I’m finally willing to announce that I’ve seen his face. Now I’m a believer! What’s there not to like? An improved walk rate, reduced strikeout rate, better contact, increased power, and a brand new hairstyle. After getting to know him from afar, I think he’s less likely to hurt your team than Jafar. There are many possible reasons for his improvement: receiving consistent playing time in the majors, having the pedigree (former first round pick), seeing the movie Moneyball, being in his prime, and, my favorite conspiracy explanation: that he’s no longer catching. All of these likely contributed in some way, but the important thing is I don’t expect him to fall off a cliff any time soon (as long as he cancels that hiking trip). For the rest of 2013, I’m going to optimistically project a .270/.350/.460 line, which is solid for a third baseman. Hold him if you own him. Otherwise, I’d see if his owner expects heavy regression (band name?). Shout out to commenter SwaggerJackers for inspiring me to cover Donaldson. On a different note, after next week’s article I’m going to have a very temporary Razzball hiatus (aka two weeks) while I travel to my motherland (or literally my mother’s land) for the first time. Whoever correctly guesses the country can pick who I’ll cover as my lede next week. I might give hints if asked on Twitter. Ready? Go! And here’s my Quick Draw McGraw approach to OPS leagues:

Josh Hamilton – Stand By Your Ham. Yes his .700 OPS is nauseating, but I’m optimistic going forward. It looks like he’s turning things around (every time he gets a little bit closer) and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him produce an .850 OPS the rest of the way.

Starlin Castro – Have I mentioned him this year? Signs point to no. I expect his OPS to be about 100 points higher than it’s been so far. That’s my Starlin-eyed surprise.

Mark Teixeira – Looks like he’ll return at the end of this week and that he’s being picked up everywhere. A few months ago, I said that I won’t expect much more than an .800 OPS from him this year.

Jason Heyward – There might not be a better time to buy low than right now. I think he’ll begin to hit like we thought he would very soon. I’m going to personally see to it that he switches jerseys back with Evan Gattis.

David Ortiz – That’ll do, Papi. That’ll do.

Neil WalkerLast week I told you to pick him up. What do you think I’m going to say this week? I can’t hear you, please speak louder… Correct!

Lance Berkman – He’s kind of been a slacker, but hey – like a ska band playing 52 pickup, I expect him to pick it up, pick it up, pick it up. I conservatively projected a .270/.370/.480 line before this season and believe he’ll top that going forward.

Jed Lowrie – He’s been battling injury (what else is new?) and slumping lately, but I expect him to maintain his .800 OPS.

Kevin Youkilis – Yes, he’s been injured, but I’d still take a chance on him if I needed a third baseman, since he’s widely available. I will wait, I will wait for Youk.

Pedro Alvarez – Spanish lesson of the week: Pedro es muy bueno. Say it with me. “Pedro es muy bueno.”

Dayan Viciedo – He might be available in your league and I think that his current .276/.328/.448 line is a good baseline for the rest of 2013.

David Murphy – I expect him to be a lighter version of Viciedo, in every sense of the word.

Jason Kubel – Cheap power returning from injury? Yes please, madam. Maybe it’s because I’m hungry, but I have the urge to add “tac” at the beginning of his last name.

Donaldson is available in my 6×6 Roto league (obp). I could possibly get gio and weaver for beltre then pick up donaldson. Whats your opinion?

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@zoltan: If the pitchers on waivers aren’t that good, then I like that move. So, I wouldn’t do that in a 10 team mixed league, but would in anything deeper.

      • zoltan says:
        (link)

@Tom Jacks: it’s an 8 team league, what if I would get king felix plus one of those guys? Still hold?

6×6 12 team league with obp instead of ba and slg as 6th cat. Worth holding on to Ethier and Lawrie? I am rotating them with Pedro Alvarez and B Moss.

Youk, Kubel, Carter, Quentin and Werth available…thx.

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@Ferga: I’d hang on to Lawrie for a little longer if you can, but I’d drop Ethier for Quentin (or Kubel). If Lawrie ends up going on the DL when Youk gets back, I wouldn’t mind switching them, assuming it’s a redraft league.

  5. abdoozy says:
    (link)

Just dropped Viciedo for Nick Franklin — was considering dropping Moreland, but I suspect RBI might be harder to come by for Viciedo in that lineup than at Texas, and i need RBI guys. Did I make a grievous error?

Moreland seems pretty safe in that lineup and less likely than Viciedo to go through a week with a .182/.182/.273, which was Dayam’s slash last week. But maybe I suffer from constipation bias.

    • abdoozy says:

what’s the highest you would go for one year of Hamilton or Kemp? (10 team 6×6 roto keeper).
players and next year’s salary (I can only keep 8 players total) Here’s my outfielders
    1B Rizzo $4
    CI Goldschmidt $5
    OF Braun not keepable
    OF Craig $6
    OF Bruce $20
    OF Gomez $13
    OF Marte $4 or $6
    U Heyward $11
    BN Hart $2
    DL Stanton $25

I also have MI depth, only one of E. Cabrera, Kendrick, and Carpenter occupy a starting spot on my roster. All are either $2 or $3

    • Tom Jacks

@Andrew: Highest in terms of dollar amount or what I would be willing to trade?

      • Andrew says:
        (link)

        @Tom Jacks:

willing to trade. Rizzo, Goldschmidt, and Segura (2) are great values, I was wondering what combination of present and future value you would trade in a “buy low” type of trade. Heyward 11, Stanton 25, Gomez 13, Marte 4 could be amazing values or just average values depending on how they finish the year.

        • Tom Jacks

          Tom Jacks says:
          (link)

@Andrew: Ok, I’d be willing to trade Gomez or Marte for Kemp. Maybe Craig too. Only one of them though. I’d have to think for awhile before trading more than one of them.

I have Alex Rios, Jose bautista and Carlos Gomez in the outfield.

Bautista I always want to start. Rios and Gomez are having very solid years but PLATOONY TUNES on the site, LEONYS MARTIN is way more valuable than they are against right handed pitchers.

According to it, leonys martin is an outright pimp against right handed pitchers.

I currently have an empty roster spot that im dangling after dropping Gausman (don’t trust him against DET but am starting him tonight against WAS).

Should I pick up Leonys Martin and start him when Rios or Gomez are facing a right hander?

Im thinking everytime Carlos Gomez faces a right hander, I will plug in Leonys Martin. Good move? Highly recommended?

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@RudyCorrales: I wouldn’t mind that for Rios (or looking at only playing Rios at home), but Gomez has been too hot to chance it for me. With the way he’s been hitting, he could face a lefty out of the bullpen and hit a homer.

      • RudyCorrales says:
        (link)

        @Tom Jacks:

Thanks Tom, i dig into it a little bit more after you mentioned him not playing on the road.

Rios is facing right handed pitching Wednesday, friday, saturday AND they are away games.

During those same dates, Leonys is facing right handed pitching and the games are in arlington park. Should I start Leonys over Rios for these 3 games?

how much do you like the move for those 3 games? just trying to get those extra base hits and runs that might make the difference at the end of this week.

        • Tom Jacks

          Tom Jacks says:
          (link)

@RudyCorrales: No problem – I could see it being an upgrade of at least one base per game (on average), which doesn’t sound like a lot, but is when you consider that a couple bases in a game is good.

Ok. I’ve got it. It’s Colombia. I’ve been there. Amazing women. Your father chose wisely!

Do you answer non-fantasy questions? Your twitter says your a political junkie and studied economics. Here’s a question:

Why does everyone say such nonsense as “We’re broke” when referring to the United States government? According to the Consitution Article 1 Section 8, “The Congress shall have Power…To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof…”

Technically the U.S. government really doesn’t need our tax dollars and it doesn’t need to borrow money in order to spend. It can create as many Dollars as it needs. So what’s all this nonsense about being broke? That only concern is inflation. Don’t create too much too fast!

I’ll tell you what… if I could print up completely legal U.S. Dollars, I wouldn’t need income or need to borrow in order to spend.

What say you? Shoot me an email if you want to discuss it offsite.

    Thanks for the responses above.

I’ve gone back and forth on Donaldson. I keep wanting to trade him at highest peak… but maybe a regress just won’t happen for awhile?

Anyway, I have a glut of OF and I’m trying to make a trade. Holliday/Altuve/Moreland for Phillips/Corey Hart/Wei-Yei Chen. Which side do you want?

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:

@Andrew W: I think Donaldson will regress, just not nearly as much as most people expect. I’d want the Holliday side.

@Tom Jacks: Thanks Tom. Should I ask for Homer Bailey instead of Chen to get a better deal on this? Or just scrape it altogether?

@Andrew W: Bailey’s better, but I would scrap it unless you can get a much better pitcher. Maybe you could try to do Altuve and a lesser outfielder (Moreland?) for Phillips?

12-team 5×5 league – which side do you prefer?

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@RS: I keep going back and forth on this, but I think the Verlander/Fowler side. I don’t have high expectations for Profar this year, but he’ll still be a serviceable MI.

      • RS says:
        (link)

        @Tom Jacks:

I felt the same way. I was offered the Verlander/Fowler side of it.

        C – Santana
        1B – Goldy, Howard
        2b – Kelly Johnson, Profar
        3b – Lorgoria, Donaldson
        SS – Peralta
OF – J. Upton, McCutchen, Gardner

SP – Miller, Bumgarner, Zimmerman, Teheran, Lester, Peavy, Wacha
RP – Chapman, Wilhelmsen, Parnell, Bell, Janssen

This is a 1st place team currently, but I thought it looked like it would improve my team overall, especially since Upton has cooled off quite a bit since his hot start. Just didn’t want to screw up what I had going.

        • Tom Jacks

Was offered wright for carpenter which I was not expecting and just accepted. Thing is I have machado starting at 3b and 4 guys filling my OF and utility spot (Adam jones, marte, cargo, and choo). I cannot be having any of these guys or wright on the bench. Who do You suggest I trade of this bunch of 5 for a solid SP? And what kind of SP value can I get or expect for them? I am leaning towards flipping wright as soon as get him but Open to trading one of Choo, marte, and machado also. Thanks in advance.

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@Gbuscaino: Great trade and I like your approach. I’d want an ace (top 20 pitcher) for Choo or Machado. I don’t fully believe in Marte, so if you can get a good pitcher (top 30-40) I’d do that first. I’d want a top 10 pitcher for Wright.

Entertaining blog post, as always Tom. I saw above that you said you’d take Heyward over Holliday ROS. Would you also take Heyward over Bruce? They both tend to strikeout a bunch, but are you confident that Heyward should be able to reach his potential this year?

    Also,
In my points league I’m in need of a closer. Parnell, Street and Cashner(RP eligible) are available. Parnell has been solid with his save chances, and his numbers are impressive. Street has 11 saves and is on pace to get over 30 saves..but his numbers don’t look great- ERA, HRs allowed, LOW babip. Cashner has upside potential, he’s going deeper into games, nut he’s pitching to contact, not strikeouts…kind of wondering what to do here Tom! Haha

P.s. Rotowire.com has a really good player pages and ranks players by statistic from Low to Elite. I use it all the time, you might like it.

      @Fister Furbush: Thanks FF!

They’re about even for me, but I think Heyward has more potential in an OPS league, so I’d go with him. I don’t think Heyward will reach his full potential this year, but he should be able to produce near last season’s numbers, on a per game basis, ROS. In a non-OPS league, I’d side with Bruce though, but again, it’s really close.

I’d go with Parnell since you need a closer. I don’t trust Street.

Thanks – I haven’t seen those and will definitely check it out.

I’m also high on Alvarez in OPS leagues, but what about OBP leagues? I’ve been starting Gyorko over Lawrie in May and that’s worked out, but if Lawrie hits the DL I may go fishing for a 3B platoon partner. Alvarez and Chavez are the best options. Alvarez has the pop, Chavez has the OBP and is easy to platoon. If Alvarez’s OBP going forward stays at .250 he’s not worth it, but if it’s in the .330 range that’s another story. You can never have too much power, but I am a couple standard devs ahead of 2nd place in HR and could stand to make up a few pts in OBP, FWIW.

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@Steve Stevenson: I think his OBP will hover around .300. What about only starting him against righties?

      • Steve Stevenson says:
        (link)

@Tom Jacks: Definitely how I’d play him, but Chavez’s platoon splits are even starker: similar AB/HR, with an OBP .130 higher against righties compared to Alvarez (~.385 vs ~.255), plus the home park advantage.

        • Tom Jacks

          Tom Jacks says:
          (link)

@Steve Stevenson: Good point – I didn’t realize that. I can’t argue against Chavez, given how he’s been hitting and with those splits.

Who wins this trade in your opinion, Tom?
    12-team, (No MI/CI, 3OF, 2Util) 6×6 ops/k9/QS instead of Ws

Team A gets: Andrew McCutchen, Matt Carpenter, Lance Lynn

Team B gets: Dustin Pedroia, Yoenis Cespedes, Anibal Sanchez

    • Tom Jacks

      Tom Jacks says:
      (link)

@Principle Blackman: I’d lean towards Team B. I think the difference between Cutch and Cespedes is a bit less than the difference between the 2Bs and SPs.

      • Principle Blackman says:
        (link)

        @Tom Jacks:

Thank you, sir. I am standing pat on that one.

I have one more question for you in your OPS specific opinion. It is regarding a little roster management.
I have Josh Reddick coming off the DL and I need to drop someone.
The league parameters are exactly as above, but I neglected to mention the 1300 IP limit.
I’m currently in 1st by a substantial margin, which is not to say that I am comfortable with my lead; it’s a highly competitive league of experienced fantasy baseballers (Grey’s mom’s term). I’ve pitched the 3rd most innings in the league; yahoo is projecting me to be about 50 innings over the limit.
Who is the drop here? is it reddick? is it a pitcher?

        C Perez
        1b Goldscmidt
        2b Pedroia
        SS Segura
        3b Beltre
        Of Adam Jones, Cespedes, Aoki
        Util Rizzo, Starlin Castro
        Bn Frazier
        DL Reddick

SP Bumgarner, Shields, Anibal Sanchez, Minor, Bailey, Masterson, Archer, Wheeler
        RP Perkins, Steet, Kenley Jansen
        DL Perez

        thanks

        • Tom Jacks

          Tom Jacks says:
          (link)

@Principle Blackman: I don’t expect much from Archer, so I’d drop him. I’d use Reddick when Aoki is facing a lefty (and also when anybody has a day off).
