Chris Carpenter has a bulging disc.  I once had a bulging disc.  I had my Low End Theory disc in my car radio and I tried to jam in my Kool Moe Dee CD… *checking my notes*  Oh, Carpenter has a bulging disc in his neck.  Well, he should go see Dr. Frankenstein.  Carpenter says he can’t throw yet, but he’s dealt with this issue before.  Cards are starting to think about a Plan B.  I never liked Plan A.  A 36-year-old who had a 4.47 ERA until the middle of June last year?  You should totally draft him!  He sounds promising!  Carp, or Crap if you’re kinda dyslexic, would move down my rankings with this news, if I didn’t already have him really low in my rankings because I’m always cautious of aging starters who tend to break down.  Also, I’m psychic.  On a related note, you may want to bring in the trash bins on Wednesday night from three to four AM, there’s gonna be possums.   Cust kayin’.  Anyway, here’s what else I saw in spring training for fantasy baseball:

Sike!  Before we get into today’s roundup, we announced our podcast yesterday.  Today, you can subscribe to it at iTunes.  This message was brought to you by Phoenix University, “We don’t look good unless you look good.  Or is it well?”  Anyway, here’s the roundup:

Giancarlo Stanton – It’s sure been a pain changing Mike to Giancarlo on all of my Trapper Keepers.  You know what else is a pain?  Giancarlo’s wrist.  Worst Segue Ever, “Wow, I’ve heard some bad segues before, but that takes the cake.”  Sorry, Worse Segue Ever.  WSE, “Don’t apologize to me, apologize to your readers.”  You know you’re kinda making the segue worse by drawing attention to it.  WSE, “Hence my name.”  Giancarlo was hit on the wrist by a pitch the other day, but X-rays were negative, which is oddly enough a positive.  Giancarlo should take a day or two more to recoup, but should be fine going forward.  If you want to send him flowers, send them to me.  I’m parked outside his condo.  In the bushes.  What, I’m just making sure he’s safe.

Logan Morrison – Having soreness in his knee that was surgically-repaired.  As of right now, it’s nothing to worry about.  Or as Logan Morrison would say on Twitter — #firstworldproblems

Brian Fuentes – The battle for the A’s closer and the 22 saves that comes with the gig is heating up.  Jerry “The Beav” Blevins is the only possible left-hander behind Fuentes.  So there’s some speculation that if The Beav gets cut, then Fuentes may stay in setup.  But if The Beav gets into the bullpen that will make it easier to hand the closer job to Fuentes.  May I say from owning Fuentes in past years, nothing is easy about Fuentes closing.  Worst Segue Ever, “Okay, that’s just another–”  You know, that’s enough, WSE.  WSE, “Hey, do what you have to do.”  Here’s what I’ll say on the closing shituation in Oakland, I think Balfour will make a better closer (marginally), but Fuentes will get the job.  Either way, in almost all leagues (except very shallow ones), I’d draft both guys and hope the one I drafted comes out with the job.

Yoenis Cespedes – Homered in his first spring game.  I now have Yoenis in two leagues, and I’m getting him in more leagues if he continues to fall far down in drafts.  I have Yoenis’s projections down for 65/20/80/.250/12.  That’s a not-that-poor-man’s Adam Jones.  I’d take that way before the 200th or so place ESPN and Yahoo have him ranked.  Frequent commenter, chata, made a good call when he said Yoenis looked like Gary Sheffield when he homered.  Somewhere, Sheffield is angrily wagging his trademark infringement lawsuit papers.

Jim Johnson – Buck Showalter said he hasn’t named Johnson the closer yet.  Kevin Gregg’s family said, “Please, we can’t handle anymore death threats.”  Matt Lindstrom is also in the O’s possible closerousel.  I think Johnson ends up winning the job, but in the mean’s while I would draft all three in deep leagues, or places you need saves.

Alfonso Soriano – Hit his 4th homer of the spring.  I have a mantra:  Don’t Believe Spring Training Stats — DBSTS, for those that like to acronymize shizz. But, and this is a small but like what Leyland throws away every seven to ten minutes, vets tend to have good beginnings to their season then tire.  Soriano’s April stats last year:  10 homers.

Eric Hosmer – Left Monday’s game after landing awkwardly on his shoulder.  Doctors said he was F-I-N-E, then they did the Bell Biv Devoe dance where you kick heels with the guy across from you.

Mike Moustakas – Left the game after being hit with a pitch in his right knee.  Royals are saying it’s simply a bruise and he’ll be good to go.  David Glass, Royals owner and former CEO of Wal-Mart, said he would not pay for any time missed.

Zack Cozart – He’s showing no signs of his injury from last year.  Have I mentioned I want Cozart in every league?  Oh, well, consider this yet another notice.  You’ve been noticed!

Jesus Montero – I want to throw a warning out there that there will be a lot of Jesus Montero updates this year.  We’ve already drafted him in three out of four leagues.  Bee tee dubya, he’s hitting .389.  But spring stats mean nothing.  But II, The Return of But:  He’s hitting .389!

David Wright – Received an anti-inflammatory injection yesterday for discomfort that I think he’s been feeling for the last three years.  I’m only half joking.  I don’t want to yell fire in the theater of Razzball, but I’m starting to get worried.  The Mets doctors’ track record with getting players back on the field is about the same as yours with that girl who used to live next door to you.

Kendrys Morales – He ran the bases for two straight days.  Talk about going back to the base-ics!  Sorry, I’ll never say that again.

Chipper Jones – Glass Chipper is hinting at retirement.  His retirement plans include him reuniting with his oblique that abandoned him back in 2004.

David Robertson – Fell down some stairs the other day, but he played catch yesterday and he’s good to go.  He can remove his walking boot.  On a related note, Miguel Cabrera’s nickname in the field is The Walking Boot.

Fausto Carmona – Charges against him for lying about his name have been dropped.  Charges against him for being a terrible pitcher are still undergoing investigation.

        @Michael,

        Really…considering dropping castro for cozart??

        • @HotRod, No way…Castro > Cozart. Probably 50 points in average b/w the two with Cozart’s only advantage is in power. I’d hold onto those three MI over Cozart.

          • Simply Fred

            Fred Barker says:
            (link)

@Rudy Gamble, really? You’d keep Murphy over Cozart?

            • @Fred Barker, The original question was Cozart over Castro which is a no-brainer for Castro. I’d lean towards Murphy over Cozart (murph higher on point shares) but it’s close to a coin flip.

        • Michael says:
          (link)

@HotRod, Sorry, I didn’t make that clear. I am NOT thinking about dropping Castro. So I guess I’m trying to decide if I should drop Murphy or A. Hill for Cozart….I like Cozart’s upside, but Murphy has nice position flexibility…

          • Simply Fred

            Simply Fred says:
            (link)

@Michael, let’s break it down (every decision is important):

Cozart is ALL about upside. Yes, he could be in the minors. And, he could break out and give you real production that you can’t get off the FA list.

Murphy is ranked #285 by Grey, 75/12/60/.275/5. Those are numbers you can get any day/all day just rotating guys from the FA. He has enough of a proven record that he has very little upside. He’s had two MCL injuries in the last two years (didn’t even play in 2010), so he has considerable downside as well.

I VALUE position eligibility, but the thing I need to remind myself is that I need to require true value that is being rotated. In Murphy’s case, that is marginal.

In this instance, Cozart is the play for true upside potential.

Murphy has next to no value. What, you can’t find 12 HRs and 5 SBs by running matchups on a daily basis for that position?

            • Michael says:
              (link)

@Simply Fred, You rock. Thanks. I do believe Murphy will be added for Cozart.
              Thanks everyone!

  4. TheNewGuy says:
    (link)

Closer related question, first of many im sure! Who would you rather have to chase saves: Pestano or Fuentes?

    • @TheNewGuy, Fuentes. Have a friend of from Cleveland in town and says the Indians are really wedded to Perez as closer. But if he ever leaves in free agency to Miami, he’s dead to them.

      • JoeC says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble, Then these are Exhibits A & B as to why the Indians and the A’s suck: the Indians because they’re “wedded to Chris Perez as their closer” when Pestano is so obviously better at that whole “getting people out” thing and the A’s for allowing Fuentes the key to the closer wagon on a Friday night after he’s had a six-pack of Smirnoff Ice (see, cause Fuentes pitches like he’s drunk!).

Bad franchises make bad decisions and bad records result. I call it “the Law of the Bad”. :)

Where are you projecting Cozart hits in the reds line up?

    • @Tony, Trying to read Dusty’s mind is like trying to read that of a Hungarian with bad penmanship. MLBDepthCharts has Cozart hitting #2. The big question is whether Stubbs is moved out of the top spot. My bet is Cozart will hit 8th.

      • JoeC says:

@Rudy Gamble, Stubbs at leadoff is a travesty. Of course, Dusty as baseball manager is also a travesty, but I think a lesser one.

      (link)

@Bristol, i dont think i’d mess with crawford this yr man…. nothing better than those two in the 11th round? i know its a keeper lg, but nothing?….

      • Bristol says:

@Tony, Nope. The cupboard has been picked pretty clean. Looking at the likes of Hart, Morneau, Howard in addition to Cespedes and Crawford.

      • JoeC says:
        (link)

@Tony, Crawford. Better lineup alone would make the difference for me. Crawford may miss a few weeks due to the wrist, but Cespedes may also be in the Minors.

And Crawford has proven he can hit in the major leagues. Cespedes has yet to do that.

To me, it’s not even close.

        • Bristol says:
          (link)

@JoeC, I have two picks back to back. One of them is going to be Ryan Dempster. Whoever I take would be my 4th outfielder as I already have Bautista, Jennings and Suzuki. Love the input.

          • JoeC says:
            (link)

@Bristol, Eeek! Why Ryan Dempster? Do you really need the Ks at a cost of a 4+ ERA and 1.4+ WHIP? Dude’s gettin’ old too, so a return to the halcyon days does not seem likely.

Isn’t there any better SPs available (actually, there has to be!)?

Enjoyed the debut podcast very much, a solid handful of laugh out loud moments and Nick’s voice is NPR-worthy.

Anyway, thoughts on “punting” average in a 10-team H2H league that adds OPS as a category? I keep mocking teams that end up with Stanton, Bruce and Reynolds but I’m feeling that week-to-week AVG is already flukey as shit in H2H and my high OPS should offset the typical bad average weeks. I’m trying to avoid drafting anyone other than Reynolds who is a guarantee to hit under .250, does this sound like it would work?

    • @weas, Punting AVG in H2H is definitely a viable strategy in 6×6. I’m less concerned with roster balance in H2H (that includes speed and AVG) and more concerned with value. So if the value come draft time is stacked with HR/RBI/OPS heavy guys, grab ‘em up. You can always trade later. FYI, I posted OPS for Point Shares yesterday (you can get to it via the 2012 Rankings menu – look for Point Shares/Auction values). One method for re-ranking with a discount on AVG would be to take the Point Shares for the 6 categories, divide the AVG contribution in half, and then add them up and re-rank….I usually do that for SB. If that sounded too complicated, ignore…

Howdy Grey. I’m being added to a linear weights points keeper league (for simplicity’s sake, just think of it as wOBA and FIP) after a couple people dropped out, but because I was added so late, I’m being given a choice of four initial “keepers” from the pool of players not kept rather than directly taking over a team. Keeper cost is two rounds higher than last year’s draft position, and if a player was undrafted its a 20th round pick (I believe this means 19th round for the second undrafted player, 18th for third, etc.). Everyone keeps four, and we have unique LF,CF,RF positions, no CI/MI, all SP/RP pitching slots, and deep benches. Here are the guys available I’m considering keeping (keeper cost in parenthesis). I think there’s another owner doing the same as me, so I may not get every selection, and so if you don’t mind, rank the following:

Brett Lawrie (20th round, seems like a no brainer)
    Alex Gordon (20th round)
    Jacoby Ellsbury (5th round)
Desmond Jennings (20th round, remember, linear weights not roto so probably a bit less value here)
Jesus Montero (17th round, standard Y! eligibility rules)
    Mike Trout (21st round)
    Adrian Beltre (13th round)
    Madison Bumgarner (10th round)
    Mike Minor (20th round)

    • @Mark, Assuming these round distinctions would last in perpetuity, I’d gamble it all on upside….Lawrie, Montero, Trout, Bumgarner. Last cut was Gordon.

      • Mark says:
        (link)

@Rudy Gamble, Thanks Rudy! Also should have added on the offensive side there’s a 3:4 point ratio of SB to CS in addition to batting outcomes, so steals aren’t valueless, but inefficient basestealers hurt you, so guys like Jennings and Ellsbury can be monsters, but the categorical diversity isn’t necessary. There’s no SV or Hld or anything, pitching is basically just straight outcome linear weights, so FIP plus singles, doubles, and triples.

Keeper cost continues to increase by two rounds each year, which is my hesitation with Bumgarner. He should be a bargain this year and next year, but with all those risk inducing breaking balls, that might be it.

Lawrie’s a sure thing. My initial reaction was to go Lawrie, Gordon, Ellsbury, and Minor, but Trout and Montero in particular have to be huge considerations.

Also, it looks like no more than 4-5 guys will have first round picks, and Matt Kemp, Troy Tulowitzki, and Adrian Gonzalez are all available (which is why I didn’t include them, makes more sense to me to gamble on not picking last in the first round), so while most elite talent is kept, I don’t have to waste a first round pick before the draft, which enhances Ellsbury’s appeal at the cost of a 5th round pick. If I can get Ellsbury in CF, Lawrie at 3B, plus two more keepers and still have all of the first 10 rounds except the 5th to make picks, I should be able to build a great team for both short and long term considerations. Even if I wind up with Kemp and Ellsbury, I figure I can trade one anyway. So mostly its a question of how Gordon’s short and long term value compares to Trout’s long term value, whether its worth it to lock up Montero over Ellsbury or a pitcher (the only catchers kept are Santana and Arencibia so I’m inclined to say no, but haven’t ruled it out), and if I’m going to take a pitcher whether a few years of profit on Minor is better than just two on Bumgarner.

        • @Mark, Given the keeper escalators, I’d drop Bumgarner for Gordon. Minor is okay but i don’t think he’ll be a great bargain this year (20th) or next year (15th).

        • JoeC says:
          (link)

@Mark, There seems to be many who believe that Bumgarner’s “slider” is being thrown at half the rate that PitchFX is reporting. Basically he has a cutter that he throws that “looks” like a slider to PitchFX, thus the high slider rate.

          The truth is out there.

    • I don’t blame you. I’ve been down on Wright all pre-season. Point Shares has him at #52 – 23 picks below ESPN ADP. It’s not that I don’t think he could deliver #29 – just doesn’t seem likely. It’s also a case where people remember he stole 30 SBs but he’s never going to do it again so it doesn’t matter…

  22. Lance says:
    (link)

Grey, I love ya man..but you are completely a glass half full guy on players you like and glass half empty on ones you hate (and you’ll remain that way all season). You used Carps era from a pretty random point in the season to demonstrate your point…why didn’t you use pre all-star break? Cause his 3.85 era wasn’t bad enough. How about his total stat line? Cause his 3.45 era and 190+ K’s looked pretty good? Why not his 2nd half stats, what we all tend to do when breaking down a player from the previous year? Is it cause his 2.98 era, 1.17 whip and 95 K’s looked really good? If you don’t like him because he’s old and is a health risk I can understand, but I can point to an arbitrary time period in anyone’s season for era/ba to illustrate that the player was underperforming. Albert Pujols was also hitting .262 at the same time Carp had that 4.47 era.

    • I think Grey hates the Cardinals. He never gave Lance Berkman credit last year.

    • JoeC says:
      (link)

@Lance, There’s no such thing as a completely objective human being. We call that a computer. So Grey has some biases… big whoop. We all do.

And I actually agree with your main point, that Carpenter’s age and innings pitched last year have more to do with why we should expect his performance to decrease this year.

Enjoyed watching him during the playoffs though. The guy is a big game pitcher, no doubt about it. I was rooting for the Rangers, but Carp showed his MAN-STRENGTH!

@Grey, I saw one site that predicted Hosmer would outperform (fantasy-wise) Fielder this season. Apparently, something like 15 of Prince’s homers would not have been homers at whatever Detroit calls their stadium. Sobering stat!

    • @johnny o., without having run it against Point Shares, i think it looks pretty good. you’ve got solid depth in pitching although my guess is your team will be a lot better in K’s than WHIP. Don’t love your MI or Delmon/Lorenzo. Bourgois (sp?) seems unnecessary – he’ll kill you in other stats if in your lineup. I’d drop him for Brantley who’ll leadoff for cleveland and gives you a solid OF backup. Sanchez is okay for now but would consider dropping him if he starts out poorly – you don’t really need what he gives you (K’s). So he could be dropped for another SP/MR/RP at any point, preferably w/ a bias towards WHIP.

12 team league with a standard roster plus a MI, CI, four OF’s and UTIL. I’ve been mock drafting like crazy, loading up on strictly offense until the 7th or 8th round and then drafting SP the next three to five rounds straight. And every time I’ve ended up with a combo rotation of this ilk: Latos, Zimmerman, Kennedy, Josh Johnson, Hanson, Garza, etc. Basically guys in your 5th and 6th tiers (ranked 90-120), i.e. above average but not great. Do you think this is a solid type of rotation/good strategy? Cheers.

  34. Jay says:

Looking for some draft advice: 12 team keeper, H2H where Ks = minus 1. We start 4OF and 8P with a max of 12P on the roster. Ive kept Carlos Santana, Tex, Starlin Castro, Beltre, Ellsbury, and Bryce Harper (no pitching!) and have the 3rd pick in the draft. The best hitters avail according to Razz ranks: Reyes, Bruce, Cruz, Uggla, Pence…then a few players…then the best pitchers start at: Bumgarner, Price, Haren, Weaver, Wilson.

What say you to taking Zobrist with the 3rd pick? Bruce and Uggla are the best players avail that fill a need based on the Razz ranks but their Ks are deadly in our format. Zobrist was the 4th highest scoring 2B and 10th highest scoring OF in our league last season. That gives me a solid 2B with the flexibility to move him to OF if I can grab Kendrick or a sleeper 2B later in the draft. Then I go some combination of OF/P or P/P with picks 22/27. 8 teams in my league need to draft a 2B. The other option is to take a pitcher early but Im betting on Wilson, Haren, Hudson, or Garza being there at 22…

      @mets fan, He’s been falling around 180-200th overall…

    • @mets fan, I have him at #177 in 12-team Point Shares and his ADP is in the 240 range. That puts him at the 15th/16th round and into 4th OF range. That feels about right. I checked out 15-team LABR draft and we got him in the 15th round/11th pick (191st).

12 Team Roto (5 x 5), long term partial keeper league, snake draft…… (Keep a max of 8, if a team keeps less they get “pre-draft” picks till they get to 8 players). I’m pretty set on keeping these five…….

Votto, Phillips, Youkilis Heyward Gardner. On the bubble…….. Montero J, Beachy, Lind, & Storen

Am also leaning towards Montero & Beachy…… but will probably let Lind and Storen go.

I’ve been offered Lester & Alex Gordon for Montero.

    A) Do I make the deal…….. I like Montero long term but he is a catcher – Lester would be my ace & probably better than anyone who is let go

    B) If I make the deal who should I keep…….. Votto, Phillips, Youk, Heyward, Gardner, Gordon, Lester & Beachy? Or do I keep less and gamble on getting better players with my pre-draft picks?

    Thanks

We keep 2 and I can choose between Kemp, JUp, Prince and Hanley.
