Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Did you hear the one about how so-and-so is no longer a closer but this guy is but he’s not anymore because the other guy is now?  Well, you’re about to.  Herewithin (which I don’t think is a word, but should be), we go around to every bullpen and then make up teams and make up closers for those made-up teams and talk about those too.  Oh, and we talk about some other shizz like David Wright, Jeff Samardzija and Frank Shamrockitto (okay, I made up that last name). But it’s all here and more (mostly closer talk though).  Anyway, here’s episode five of the Razzball Podcast:

    What is the concensus strategy on handcuffing relievers, is it better to have insurance for your own closers, or gamble on someone else’s? Basically, I have Street, and I’m holding Adams and Pestano. Should I drop one of those two for Cashner?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Six of one… I’d prefer to have the most likely handcuff to take over or best stuff… I’d take Adams first there… Then Cashner…

        @Grey, Similar question, I own santiago and dropped reed and holland for rauch and cashner. Would I be better off with reed and Cashner?

    Just lucked out with a waiver claim for JJ Putz. Someone dropped him for Kyle Lohse…wtf? 12 teamer and I had #6 waiver priority so I lucked out to grab him.

    Have 5 closers now though. Debating dropping Broxton or Marshall. Thoughts? Should I drop to shop those guys first?

      Shop them…

    Been offered his F-Her and Duda for my Johan, Sean Marshall, and Alex Gordon in a 10-team H2H points (where pitchers get 1 pt per out, and saves and wins are worth 5 pts.) I would be left only with Aceves as an RP, should I still pull the trigger? I could always slot some starting RP’s into that slot though (Samarjda, Harrell, Doubront, etc)

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      I’d take F-Her…

    Grey, thanks for all your advice. Volquez or Buchholz? I’m kinda’ believing in the new Volquez. He’s away from Dusty, and he’s throwing in Petco. And Buchholz throws in Fenway, and against the tough AL East.

    Thanks

      Volquez

    Grey : Great, another 0-4 day, how long do you hold on to Youk for, another 3 weeks or so? He was one of my keepers and I am starting to see a pattern of him sucking ass. Encarnacion is looking like an All Star compared to the crap he has been putting out. Don’t want to pull the trigger on an premature evacuation but my OBP can only take so much.

        @Grey, Stitcher is a mobile app that lets you stream podcasts rather than download them. I use it at work all the time and it’s a godsend.

        I’m pretty sure they just use whatever feed that goes to iTunes. Looks like there’s some info on their website here: http://www.stitcher.com/contentFAQ.php

        Anyway, I’d love to see it there since that’s how I (and a lot of people these days) listen to podcasts.

  21. Chunk says:

    Aroldis Chapman scares me. If he were starting I can’t think of many others I’d want to own above him.

    • @Chunk, That Verlander kid is decent…

      • Chunk says:
        (link)

        @Shea Sera Sera, Verlander, Kershaw, Doc and Lee but that might be it…

    • MattTruss223 says:
      (link)

      @Chunk, stupid Reds! In a H2H points league, Chapman has been money even w/o being a starter though.

      • Shin-Soo Choo Choo says:
        (link)

        @MattTruss223, Would you all drop Kenley for Aroldis? I do need saves what with having Marmol and Valverde, but I’m not panicking (yet). Just not convinced Guerra’s going anywhere and Chapman may have more upside.

        • MattTruss223 says:
          (link)

          @Shin-Soo Choo Choo, Tough call. I’ve got Kenley in my roto leagues, but Aroldis in my H2H pts league in the hopes he becomes a mean RP eligible starter. And he happens to have lucked into two wins so far which payout nicely. I’m not convinced either of them ousts the current closers (Guerra or Marshall) very often if at all. Depends on the league set-up I guess, and your gut.

            (link)

            @B.o.B, and there’s the 0-2 :) Grey, you still going Lidge then Henry?

    You haven’t played the Gamelan much recently. What do you think of everyone’s favorite 40 year old rookie so far? He seems to be holding his own (which is almost definitely frowned upon in Milwaukee). Surprises me that Laroche seems to be the hot add over him.

    Nick just said something like, “I’m ready to pay for saves next year just so I don’t have to deal with this mess.”

    Nick! This ‘mess’ is the reason why we DON’T pay for saves! Madson, Soria, Storen, Bailey, these could have been anybody. In fact, these guys belonged to the owners that decided to pay for saves this year. Meanwhile, My crew of Motte, Johnson, Broxton, Santiago, and Rodriguez were all drafted relatively late or not even at all.

      (link)

      @Poo Holes, I would

      • Poo Holes says:
        (link)

        @Chunk, I’d probably have to think about shopping one of them. My starters aren’t all that great: Shields, Beckett, Romero, Kuroda, Buchholz, Minor, Milone, Fister (DL). Pretty gross, I know. Got Shelby Miller and Pomeranz stashed too, 10 team keeper league.

        • Chunk says:
          (link)

          @Poo Holes, Yea, that’s tough. Shields and Romero started well and could carry your pitching, but right now I don’t want to own any Red Sox pitchers other than Lester. Shopping Buch in a 10-team league will be tough, most teams will have 5 pitchers they like better than him. I still like upside-guys like H rod, Lynn, Samardjaasdhgd more than bucholz. Hopefully your offense is insane.

          • Poo Holes says:
            (link)

            @Chunk, Got sonovabenched by BOTH of those guys today. Just had to sleep in this morning…Chacin just got dropped and Niese is available. My offense is more than serviceable with Hamilton, Pence, Uggla, Butler, Andrus, Napoli, Lomo, and Howard. Got Rizzo and Arenado stashed too.

            • Chunk says:
              (link)

              @Poo Holes, Very Solid. I like Niese over Bucholz. Who’s your 3B? I might drop Arenado to add H-rod, I have a feeling he runs away with the closer role.

              • Poo Holes says:
                (link)

                @Chunk, I have Aramis. Just picked up Arenado and Pomeranz in a trade today so I wouldn’t drop him now. Just got offered Goldschmidt, Moustakas, Gerrit Cole, Jarrod Parker, and Feliz for Butler, Aramis, Walden and Shields 5 minues ago.

    You startin’ MadBum tomorrow @COL?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Goose, Yes, hopefully not unfortunately…

      • Goose says:
        (link)

        @Grey,

        Indeed. I think I’ma bench him. Sonavabench potential, for sure, but my thinking is: I’m a-scared of his 6.17 April ERA from last year. I’m also a-scared of the career .357 and .500 CarGo and Tulo hit off him, respectively, and the career team BA of .316 at Coors against him.

        If he comes in fired up and pitches well, then I’m stoked bc it just took him one start to get dialed and we’re rolling with the homies the rest o’ the year. But if he’s perhaps not right, then this is where serrrrus damage happens, especially as we’ve only just begun this fine young season. It’s too early to get roofie’d by my #1…

        • Grey

          Grey says:

          @Goose, I hear ya… Sound reasoning…

    thanks.

    • Grey

      @herschel, Neither? Bedard…

  49. fitz says:

    • Grey

      @fitz, Yup

  50. aj says:

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      @Wilsonian, Yeah, saw that… Blech…

      • Wilsonian says:
        (link)

        @Grey, definitely blech. Pretty pissed I took him in my 8 Teamer. Thought I could get by with drafting a top closer thinking in such a shallow league it wouldn’t hurt me. Missing out on some other top arms and him getting hurt is doubly shizzy…

  52. Steve says:
    (link)

    Could do with a double play here, Brox.

  53. Steve says:
    (link)

    Broxton is a shithead.

      @Steve, That was ridiculously bad.

    • fitz says:
      (link)

      @Steve, Yes, which is correct.

      • Steve says:
        (link)

        @fitz, This is pleasing to me.

    • Tony says:
      (link)

      @Steve, its annoying is what it is, he gives up a single, has pitch count of 93 and they yank him after he’s pitched 5.1? ridiculous, gimme my quality start!

    • royce! says:
      (link)

      @Steve, Pitch count- he threw way too many pitches in the first inning.

      • royce! says:
        (link)

        @royce!, Which tends to happen when you walk 4 in an inning.

        Go Padres!

        • Steve says:
          (link)

          @royce!, Woot!

  60. Tony says:

      @TheNewGuy, Yeah, wish I got him somewhere…

  62. royce! says:

    • royce! says:

      • Grey

  64. Steve says:
    (link)

    I suppose if I had decided to stream Joe Saunders today, he would have got blasted.

    • TheNewGuy says:
      (link)

      @Steve, Saundo is master-blaster material. He’s only surviving because its the Twins, that teams offense is gonna be even more horrific (horrificer?) this year.

      • Steve says:
        (link)

        @TheNewGuy, He’s actually against the Padres in Petco which I guess amounts to the same thing ;-)

        • Steve says:

          @Steve, Sorry royce!

          • royce! says:

            @Steve, No problem here- they actually won! Which is apparently what they do when I do not attend the game.

            • Steve says:
              (link)

              @royce!, I know! I even got a save out of it!

              As a local, what are your thoughts on running Bass out there tomorrow in an H2H league?

        • TheNewGuy says:
          (link)

          @Steve, Yeah was still remembering his time with the Halo’s! Guess I’ve never had any interest in him for him teams, so forgot he even moved.

        • TheNewGuy says:
          (link)

          @Steve, Ha true I guess they are kinda even now. Wish the Twins never moved, I always liked having hitters in the homerdome.

    Morrow vs. Bal
    Anibal vs. Houston

      • royce! says:
        (link)

        @Terrence Mann, For those who own Lincecum, I’d like to think that was true, but he gave up 5 ER in one start last April, and otherwise did pretty well- a couple 3 ER starts, and 3 starts in which he only gave up 1 ER. I’m not buying yet.
