Said like Denzel from Training Day, “Chutes and Ladders ain’t got nothing on us!”  Nick decided to pore over stats like he pores over pornography and come up with this really neat — his word — game called, Fact or Fiction.  Here’s how it works:  he says some random stat for some random player than another random stat for another random player to prove how great or poor one of the players has been doing.  Example:  Chris Stewart has more steals than Jason Heyward.  Fact or Fiction?  It’s a lot easier to play if you can just Google the answer.  Yes, I see you Googling.  Stop Googling!  By the way, does anyone use Bing?  Do you call it Binging?  Bing’ing?  Chuck Berry messing with my Bing-a-ling?  Cool story, brah.  Nick does this game with Rudy and I, separately.  I’m going to see if we can get all three of us on the same podcast maybe one more time this year.  That’s if Rudy will lift his court order.   My favorite part of Fact or Fiction is you can hear Rudy and I thinking.  My thinking sounds like this, “Um…”  Rudy’s thinking sounds like this, “Hmmm…”  Maybe one day someone will remix our thoughts all proper — I’m hinting in your direction David Guetta, if you’re a reader.   Of course you are.  We’re hip, I know.  Anyway, here’s the Razzball Podcast (now with truths and un-truths):

I use Bing. My friend is the product manager. They have pretty pictures on the landing screen. Goes to the same internets as the Google. Bing tastes a little like Pepsi, if you follow.

I realized something recently. I am really bad at drafting hitters. I am really, really good with the pitching. I need to shake up my approach next year. When I go for safe, I get Matt Holliday mediocrity. When I go upside I get Day To Day Harper. I don’t think I drafted more than one or two position players across two leagues who have exceeded their preseason projections.

I think you just got unlucky with Harper and the wall of blamo…. My hitting was actually pretty money this year, pitching could’ve been fine if I actually drafted Harvey rather than talking about wanting to…

        (link)

        @Grey:

I wish it was just Harper. But yeah there wasn’t really much indication that he was going to be banged up all the time. Be interesting to see how that’s perceived going into next year. He can obviously hit.

@OaktownSteve: Bruce Kemp Zimmerman Rizzo Jennings JUps MayjuneJuly. Pitching was sweet thanks to grey but even then JZims second half blech Shark ouch and of course Goldy has been fun but couldn’t save my season(I’ve now lost five in a row). Guess i held on too long hoping for turn around from most of these dudes. I mean get hot one damn time rizzo jezus! I traded Felix for hotdam jones so I have decent keeps next year: Shizz Jones and not really sure the third prob JUp. Anyhow thanks grey for all your help and infotainment!
Btw when did humor become such a large part of sports reporting on TV? MLB network is practically unwatchable new fox 1 is ultra lame so far. It’s fucking annoying that everyone has to try to be so damn funny I just want the news the scores the stats the info.

I kind of don’t want to drop Marlon Byrd right now due to surprising pop, but need to re-activate Desmond Jennings from the DL. My other outfielders are Cespedes, Leonys Martin, Stanton, and Rios. I kind of don’t want to drop any of those dudes! Who’d you drop? Byrd right?

Hey oaktown steve, I’m the opposite. I’m good at drafting hitters (set and forget) but my pitching always seems like a work in progress.

    • OaktownSteve says:
      (link)

      @gareth:

What do you think you do that helps you end up solid on offense? For me, I basically feel like I’m good at finding the later round ace. Own Harvey this year for instance, had Sale and Samard last year etc. And I’m a good streamer.

      • Gareth says:
        (link)

@OaktownSteve: I think its just a personal think of favoring offense. I find Pitching kinda boring, so don’t dig as deep as I should. It’s also a volatile field, and there are so many options. So I miss out on guys. For instance I had no Idea about the likes of Harvey and Jose Fernandez this year when I drafted, but was all over guys like Stanton, Harper ect.

I feel that if I draft a solid offense, there are less intangibles to deal with. It’s also easier to swallow a bunch of 0 for 4′s from a highly drafted hitter (like Starlin Castro) than seeing the pitchers you drafted high get absolutely clobbered a few times (Hello Samardzija, Gallardo).

It does seem like an inordinate amount of guys going after pitching early got burned this year (Cain, Verlander, Sabathia ect), and a TON of late round bargains emerged.

It crazy, but you can have all these strategies and rules and research in place, but then shit happens and you have to tear up the the piece of paper. Its Baseball. And that’s why we love it.

      • Gareth says:
        (link)

@OaktownSteve: To answer your question about what it takes for a solid offense:

For me I look at position scarcity. 2nd Base was a black hole on draft day. So If I missed out on Trout and Miggy, I was going to grab Robinson Cano as a first rounder. 2nd pick – another hitter, best available but preferably a third baseman like Longo. Third had a big drop off a few top guys were gone.

then I’d just pepper in guys I was high on or had a good feeling about as a value pick.

In future drafts I’m not going to worry about the outfield so much. If you are in a league with 3 starting OF and a UT, I would grab a 5 category stud early, a solid mid round guy then an upside guy late based on needs. I’m in a starting 5 Outfielder CBS roto right now and I find I have TOO MANY good outfielders. I’m forced to bench one of these guys over a middling middle infield option every week. It’s frustrating. So If I’m drafting next year and the comparable choice is an outfielder or an infielder, I’m taking the infielder.

For pitching I took Felix in the third then just grabbed one every few rounds. My failure this year was grabbing guys like Cahill and Hellickson, who really are boring picks with little K upside. I also failed to grab an elite closer with good peripherals early, so was left with the likes of Rafael Betancourt and some other lower end closers.

H2H Keeper League – H, R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OB+SLUG, W, QS, SV, KS, KS/9, ERA, WHIP

We can name one guy as a franchise that we keep forever, and then have 4 keepers that can only be kept for 2 years, then they must be traded or return to the draft. Who are the 5:

    Fielder
    Longoria
    Tulowitzki
    Jones
    Davis
    Hanley
    Scherzer

I’m leaning throwing Fielder back to the wolves, and then it’s a fight between Hanley and Tulo for the last spot. Jones is going to be my BFF forever. Any opinions from the peanut gallery?

Man, this podcast was the funniest all year. And at the same time really depressing. Rudy went 7 strong with 0 ER a walk and 10 Ks…. JB pitched around a leadoff single and two walks without allowing a run.. and you came on and struck out the side using only your curveball… FACT!

Now im going to go drown myself in the toilet for chris fuckin stewart having more steals than jason heyward.. geezus…

  36. Gareth says:
    (link)

GREY: “I just need some effin steals… Such a waste starting these SAGNOF’ers and not getting steals…”.

Amen to that. I am starting Gardner over better options in my weekly Roto just because he’s a better Sagnof. And guess what? He’s not stealing. Argghhh!!!! Wasn’t he going toe to toe with Ellsbury a few years back? WTF happened?

My Shortshop position has evolved into a Sagnof stream due to ineffective starters I have dropped (Asdrubal, Castro). Its a pretty inexact science though, especially weekly.

Here is my position (I am Swishmas) in the steals standings:

    Team SB Pts
    Trout fishing 145 10.0
    fan for life 142 9.0
    Diamond Czars 127 8.0
    DIE HARD 123 7.0
    younger04 110 6.0
    swishmas 106 4.5
    juggyj1 106 4.5
    pr pelicans rh 95 3.0
    buhner baldness 57 2.0
    MAKE IT RAIN 55 1.0

I am first in HR, Runs. 3rd in RBI. I fluctuate between 2nd and 3rd in Average. Steals in my Achilles Heel Hitting wise.

Should I just go all out the last few weeksof the season and start the Dysons, Bonifacio’s and Villars of the league over established guys like Stanton, Puig, Hill, Utley ect ect?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d look at benching guys for steals if that’s what I needed… I’m even going with SAGNOF’ers over other guys because I can gain steal points…

      • letsgobravos says:
        (link)

@Grey: Have Rajai going in one league also. Frustrating how little playing time he’s been getting. 3 RBIs and a steal is pretty tasty though and maybe this will get him in the lineup some more.

        • Grey

@Letsgobravos: i was lucky enough to drop hoover for broxton like 4 or 5 days ago right when i noticed him (broxton) pitching really good for 3 str appearances. Apparently people in 2 or 3 different 12 teamers with holds forgot broxton would actually get that job back. Holds guys are easy to come by to some extent, but guys on winning teams i would think would be on more people’s radar’s than just mine in those leagues.

i’ve been streaming one spot for really good SON starts like last week’s salazar/home cashner/ross etc in 10 teamer. The idea had been to get redmond/vargas rest of week and that roster spot was ross’s. Now i’m wondering if I should make Porcello the spot the stream spot, even with his super great ROS schedule. I’m top of league here so I could just hold both Ross and Porcello and go without those 2 stream starts also.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

i have no bench bats and a stacked pitching staff. Trade dead line is past so im thinking about dropping a solid pitcher to pick up a hot bat to sub in while guys like rizzo and marte sit out…

    my staff is:
    Lance Lynn
    Jake Peavy
    Max Scherzer
    Jordan Zimmermann
    Francisco Liriano
    Anibal Sánchez
    Cole Hamels
    Sonny Gray
    Joaquín Benoit
    Mariano Rivera
    Jim Henderson

Speaking of Villar, would you drop him for Wong, Grey? I have Bogaerts and Hanley manning SS. It seems as if he’s getting quite a few days off now.

          @Grey’s Goatee:

I can also drop Francisco, but he’s headed to the GABP.

      • Prezi says:
        (link)

@Jack Full O’ Hate: shit, nope! Haha remind me on here man! Ive barely done anything football yet… My yearly league has 6 people in it so far… Im slackin..

        • Jack Full O' Hate says:
          (link)

@Prezi: dude, get your shizz together…no not like that, hey we got Kid A, Sky, and the Guru in there, and I have a hunch they are not going to be slackers

          • Prezi says:
            (link)

@Jack Full O’ Hate: yeah i know, just havent transitioned out of baseball mode. Ill get there, no worries.

Can I get a Disgraceful List and an amen for brother Jim Johnson?

    • Grey

Yeah, should’ve been there about two weeks ago

      • Prezi says:
        (link)

@Grey: k rod now? Or tommy chubber?

        • Grey

          Grey says:

          I think they’re leaning Chubber

          • Prezi says:

@Grey: must be watching a kate upton photoshoot…

    • Jack Full O' Hate says:
      (link)

@Kid A: thats gonna kill your 28 save lead

      • Kid A says:
        (link)

@Jack Full O’ Hate: Yeah had no idea the goddamn trade deadline was so early in the RCL. Was hoping to move some of those guys for workable parts. Will pay closer attention next year.
8 points from first with 5 weeks to go. Hopefully those are bunny ears tickling my tuckus.

        • Jack Full O' Hate says:
          (link)

@Kid A: me too, but the deadline would not of helped me, trying to see if I can grab 4th at the end. You look over the football league yet? settings?

          • Kid A says:
            (link)

@Jack Full O’ Hate: Rumors of your demise in the league were definitely premature. If your run had started a little earlier you’d have been able to knock up even higher.
Never played such a heavy IDP league before. Looks interesting. Up with the strategy, down with the luck. I’m always for that. Never a big fan on the QB being allowed to flex, but the scoring adjustments you made should tweak it enough to pull some of the weight out of the QB slot.
Can continue the discussion on the league page if need be. No need to burn space and bore the masses with football in here.

            • Jack Full O' Hate says:
              (link)

@Kid A: that was Sky’s input on the QB in the flex, I never cared for it, but will make bye weeks a lot more interesting. This is the year we try new things. Will do, see you in the league, and will take any input into consideration.

Thanks for the baseball props, I fight til the end and never quit

Would you drop Villar for Wong, Grey? I have Bogaerts and Hanley manning SS. It seems as if he’s getting quite a few days off now.

I can also drop JuanFran, but he’s heading to the Great American Smallpark.

    • Grey

  78. letsgobravos says:

@Grey: i did exactly the same thing in league with 5 sp’s today including Gray. I benched Farquar instead. Same 1 save loss.

  79. OaktownSteve says:
    (link)

Sonny is flat nasty, y’all. One mistake to Franklin for a two run homer. Two hits and 7 ks through 7. The curve is Waino-esque.

    • OaktownSteve says:
      (link)

      @OaktownSteve:

I think he gets Detroit in Detroit next though.

      • Jack Full O' Hate says:
        (link)

@OaktownSteve: yes and then Tampa at home, if they stay with the rotation the same through September it could be an epic number 1 starter month (vs. Hou, @ Min, vs. Ana, vs. Min, @ Sea)

        • letsgobravos says:
          (link)

@Jack Full O’ Hate: Yeah just looked at their remaining series…that’s a crazy good schedule if it works out right.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’ve loved with I’ve seen too… Saw him when he was just in middle relief and was blown away…

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

Yeah we talked about him when he made his debut. What a horrendous inning for the A’s by the way.

Is Cook getting killed too? Ugh…

          • goodfold2 says:
            (link)

@Grey: that’s the worst of doolittle’s recent starts, but also the third time he’s allowed at least 1 run lately. dropped him in 2 spots for either broxton or carpenter.

  80. Jack Full O' Hate says:
    (link)

throwing the pickled Haren, Apricot Jam, and bizzaro Grey sprinkled with LaTroy and Paco is one nice day so far, 22K’s/ 1.70/.64

    • Grey's Goatee says:
      (link)

      @Jack Full O’ Hate:

Paco has been great lately. He is now on par with Dave Robertson/Rosenthal/Clippard, in my opinion.

Not just great numbers, but peripherals as well. Anyone who needs help with ratios and/or is ahead of their GS/IP limit would be wise to grab him.

      • Jack Full O' Hate says:
        (link)

@Grey’s Goatee: guy has a great delivery for deception and K’s a ton. I have streamed him a few times and gotten great numbers from him.

  84. letsgobravos says:
    (link)

    C’mon A’s, dont blow Sonny’s win.

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

        @letsgobravos:

Doolittle has not been good. The fastball velocity dropped from 96-97 to 93-94 around June July and it’s been a struggle. The curve is just a show me pitch. Guys know they are going to see a fastball over the plate . They foul off the tougher pitches because he lacks that hop. One little flair, but the rest were ropes.

  85. Al Bundy says:

Need to pick one for Saturday – Shark (16.1) or Stultz (8.2) vs each other?

Also, Lance Lynn is a dick. And Doug Fister might be one too if he blows the frosting off another cupcake this Friday.

Too good to drop, too stupid to do it anyway.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Shark… Agreed on Lynn

  86. Kid A says:
    (link)

way to go doolittle. you knuckledick.

    • Hondo says:
      (link)

      @Kid A:
Doolittle except screw Sonny(and more importantly,me) out of the W.

  87. SteveNZ says:
    (link)

Shuck, Hoes or Carter to replace J-Up?

Or should I just use Venable, who I already own?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      I’d use Venable

  88. letsgobravos says:
    (link)

FUCK. Of course the Giants blow Peavys’ win also.

    • letsgobravos says:
      (link)

Prob should have dropped that sac fly @letsgobravos: Sac fly in foul territory scored the run…wonder if they should have dropped it instead of getting the out.

    • SteveNZ says:
      (link)

@letsgobravos: Same here. And on that team today I also get stuck with the losses for Santana and Beachy.

    • letsgobravos says:
      (link)

@letsgobravos: And in a stroke of luck, Romo gets my Peavy W back for me.

  89. Grey's Goatee says:

Join the crew, Grey. It’s time to ditch Ryan Cook for Paco Rodriguez.

    10.49 K/9 (Cook-8.41)

    2.53 BB/9 (Cook-2.75)

    1.94 ERA (Cook-2.1)

    2.72 xFIP (Cook-3.53)

3 vulture wins (Cook-5) and 2 vulture saves (same as Cook).

        @Matt:

        I’d lose him

        • OaktownSteve says:
          (link)

          @OaktownSteve:

          Velocity down like 4 mph.

          • goodfold2 says:
            (link)

@OaktownSteve: he also had 2 other earned run outings lately. grab carpenter/paco/wilson rather than that guy.

            • OaktownSteve says:
              (link)

              @goodfold2:

              any of them

  91. OaktownSteve says:
    (link)

Man Frenchie Farquar is Funky. Three quarter delivery, lot of arms and legs. Very different pitch mix. Just K’d the side.

    • letsgobravos says:
      (link)

@OaktownSteve: Yeah, he’s piling up Ks. Wondering if I should grab him. Have 4 and 5 closers on my two teams respectively. You like him more than Perkins or Kevin Gregg?

      • Kid A says:
        (link)

@letsgobravos: add farq. dump gregg. the whole world will smile with you.

        • letsgobravos says:
          (link)

@Kid A: Crap, farq was picked up yesterday in that league. You guys like him more than Perkins?

  92. letsgobravos says:
