Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

So it’s the dog days of summer, your team sucks and you’re starting to follow Razzball Football to see which 3rd string right tackle might make the special teams roster.  Hey, just because you took my advice and drafted Josh Rutledge in the 5th round and screwed your team up doesn’t mean baseball season is over!  Prospect Scott was on today’s podcast and they look at some prospects who could help with your stretch run, as well as some gamers for 2014.  All this while Scott was sweating out the booze from Lollapalooza in his Honda waiting to get a hot Italian beef for lunch.  Just sounds weird to me.   (Honestly, I had no idea Lollapalooza was still going on either.  Did Soundgarden headline?)  As for me and Nick… Well, we’ve gone full Red Sox Nation at this blog recently.  It’s like the Ghost of Johnny Pesky has taken over and advising him is Ted Williams’ head in a jar.  For the third time in the last week, we talk about Xander Bogaerts.  Why?  Because he’s going to be bananas good and he plays a position that boosts his value even more and the Red Sox are going to call him up shortly.  Or rather third basely.  Nick and I also talked about the suspensions and why football sucks.  I lose it for the better part of forty-five seconds recounting what a friend of mine wrote on his Facebook wall.  We’re so high school!  That’s not to say you shouldn’t go join one of our fantasy football leagues.  I’m sure Sky, JB and team are a bunch 0f lovely individuals.  Anyway, here’s the Razzball Podcast (now with a little extra vitriol — word of the day!):

Don’t keep kicking yourself over Rutledge, Grey! I followed your advice, but got him in the 19th round (204 overall). In 150 AB’s he batted around .240 for me, with 5 HR’s and 5 SB’s. Not great, but hardly killed my team.

Now, Middlebrooks, on the other hand……..

(I kid, I kid……I’m still in first. Thanks!)

One more question Grey, Got offered Hamels for my Jose Fernandez, I’m thinking of pulling the trigger because of the innings limits, I read it’ll be 150-170 and he’s about 130 as of now, he’d get 5-6 more starts and its a H2H league, so Hamels could be more helpful come playoff time.

    So do it?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      I’d want Hamels

  7. Josh says:

Just traded Wright and Kipnis for Sale/Kuroda/Castro/Sandoval in a H2H keeper league. Now I was going to pick up Nick Franklin but hes slumping, will he pick it back up? Also, another team wants Braun or Rizzo off me, He has Greinke/Weaver, what do you see their value in a keeper and would you trade Braun only if both were involved, or if one of them, which one, greinke? Im currently in 2nd place.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I don’t know your options besides Franklin, but in a keeper I’d want him, though I wonder how deep the league is if he’s even on waivers… I’d take Greinke or Weaver, in that order, for Braun…

      • Josh says:
        (link)

        Grey,
thanks for the input, I’m in a H2H 10-team keeper. Since giving away Kipnis, I have Altuve/Castro/Desmond to fill my 2B/SS/MI. So is it worth it to pick up Franklin? Aoki, Victorino, De Aza, Lowrie, Byrd are all avail on the wire.
Also, who would you drop out of Hellickson or Parker?

Last thing… My league is pitcher heavy, but alot of people punt saves – I did last year and its even easier now as we have 3SP/2RP/2P slots, I have Chapman/Kimbrel and Perkins. Worth it to rock all three or try and trade or drop Perkins and rock just the top two?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Drop Hellickson and Parker probably… I’d own De Aza and Lowrie first of those two… Sure, try to trade Perkins, don’t see how that’s happening if people punt saves

  8. Club Sauce says:

Got a lot of emotions tied into this one:

I love Jean with all of my heart, but I just got a pretty tasty offer. We can keep guys forever with no inflation. I have Jean in the 21st but got offered Cliff Lee and Tulo from a guy punting this season for Jean.

I’d obviously lose Jean as a keeper potential but would still be able to choose two hitters from this list: Puig in the 17th, Davis (4), Jennings (22), Xander (21).

Do I pull the trigger and feel confident in two of those four keepers or stick with Jean and see if my already rather strong team has what it takes this year to win it all?

    Thanks.

                    @Grey:

He’s got a long swing. He’s got power because of that. Good extension, when he hits them they go. But the league just found the holes in that long swing and he has not adjusted. There are at least three ways to get him out regularly. Up and in hard, down and away with breaking stuff and good straight change. He hasn’t found a way to make any adjustments. The guy on the A’s radio yesterday, who is a really even measured guy says “I think it’s time for Josh to just guess where it’s going to be and swing as hard as he can…” This, unfortunately is who he is more than what you saw last year.

It’s possible Reddick will turn it around but there’s no reason to suspect it. He’s not a real cerebral player either so he doesn’t seem like he’s really evolving at the plate. It’s all been the same since August of last year.

Yeah, I might switch from Cook to Doomuch now on my team or someone else cause it seems like the A’s don’t use Cook more than once every few days…

                    (link)

                    @Grey:

Cook and Doolittle get a lot of use when they are winning or in close games. But A’s have been on the wrong side of some scores lately. They do like to use those two in 7/8 hold situations so the opportunity for wins doesn’t come around for them too often. Cook has 47 appearances.

      • Big Magoo says:
        (link)

@OaktownSteve: Pitching in the GAB is tough for anyone, especially right-handers, but something had to give when you look at his numbers (84.9% FB%, 89.9 mph average FB velocity, 5.5% SwStr%, etc.). That’s just the numbers game though. I’m sure that you’ve seen him pitch a lot more than I have this year.

        • OaktownSteve says:
          (link)

          @Big Magoo:

I probably had my homer goggles on to a certain extent, but I definitely do believe in k/bb as a good predictor of success.

          • Big Magoo says:
            (link)

@OaktownSteve: K/BB ratio is definitely an important stat, but it’s just part of the puzzle, same as all of the numbers that I listed above. Numbers don’t always tell the whole story. Can’t develop an informed opinion without watching someone play as well.

            • OaktownSteve says:
              (link)

              @Big Magoo:

As you know, I think qualitative plus quantitative is the way to go. I also read the tea leaves on the numbers. However, when a guy like Cain or Bartolo has an extended period where they defy the numbers you have to look at whether you’re dealing with an outliers. If there are some extreme numbers in the profile you have to look more closely. Remember outliers break models.

He says something on the podcast about me saying in the beginning of the year that I thought he had too much pitching and not enough offense… Wait until next week when I call him out… He does have too much pitching and not enough offense!

          • Big Magoo says:
            (link)

@Grey: Yup. His pitching has been lights out, but he’s pretty much maxed out on points. He’s in too big a hole in HRs and RBIs to make up ground at this point.

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

          • OaktownSteve says:
            (link)

            @Grey:

I don’t think he knows what he’s doing but he lucked into something I’ve noticed. In leagues where you can expect the standings to be really, really close, you can actually make a run at the top being heavy on either pitching or offense. Since that league is going to likely be won with fewer than 90 points, if you can get to 50 or so in pitching you can cobble together some offense.

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

That’s how I’m in contention, but with offense heavy and trying to sneak in with pitching…

              • OaktownSteve says:
                (link)

                @Grey:

Your pitching really ain’t that bad, especially since you tidied it up. Just got in a rate cat hole. But you’ll end up solid in K’s and Ws.

Reddick just ended the top of the 8th with two out. Just missed squaring one up it sounded like.

Stream homer! Thanks Adam Lind. The stream homer is so satisfying.

I was saying to Rudy a couple of weeks back, the RCL format has grown on me. Because it’s shallow, the streaming options are basically like modified daily league play so you get that but also the satisfaction of a season long roto league, and if that’s not enough you get an overall ranking too.

    • Big Magoo says:
      (link)

@OaktownSteve: I streamed Lind in two RCLs today. It feels good when those streamers come through, doesn’t it?

Yeah, it’s our favorite league, by far for me… It’s nice to be able to have a foundation of guys then build on or subtract from them… In deeper leagues, a guy like Heyward and Kemp kills you and there’s not a whole lot you can do…

    Just saw this today:

Mejia has been dealing with elbow pain all year, which will require surgery in the offseason. He said he’s started throwing slower in order to converse himself over the course of a game. “You can’t throw hard. You need to throw intelligently so the arm doesn’t start bothering you because everyone knows what I have. It’s better to throw intelligently, throw strikes and get outs,” Mejia said.

Why is he playing now then? Why doesn’t he just go get the surgery done?

I’m needing some SAGNOF’S as I am behind in these categories.

I’m in a 10 team CBS ROTO and My SS position has been TERRIBLE all year.

I have to play 2B, SS and MI every week. I have a 4 man crew I rotate – Utley, Hill, Asdrubal and Starlin.

Obviously Utley is the starter at 2nd every week (until he breaks again). I’ve been hoping I get some Steals out of the other guys (especially Castro) but they are not running AT ALL.

I’m considering streaming Hot Sagnofs like Villar at either SS or MI every week to catch up on steals. Who would you drop out of the trio?

Options on the Wire ARE: Villar, Aybar, Dozier, A. Escobar, Lawrie, Bonifacio, Lemahieu.

current bats this week are gattis, rizzo, phillips, donaldson, hardy, franklin, lawrie, R Davis, cutch, pence, ike davis, harper.

Rienzo is one of those 8, he’ll be dropped likely for G.richards late sun night. I’ve heard Richards has good schedule coming up. 16 teamer, these seriously are the best SP out there.

People in this league go crazy for any STL SP (joe kelly was grabbed even when he sucked) and generally hot hitters 3 or more days after i would’ve picked them up, but i lead league in pickups. 5 per week suck. NO LOSS FOR SMYLY! Get an out Rondon!

    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
      (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: hate being in leagues with only room for 4 total RP per day. With perkins/rivera/fields/hawkins had to drop robertson and kept smyly cause he counts as SP, even though clearly robertson/a.torres and others are better for stats alone.

  85. goodfold2 says:
    (link)

Santiago sucks today against usually terrible Yankees.

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

@goodfold2: that’s because I streamed him. All of my streamers this week have been a big useless bucket of shit.

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Wilsonian: in the same league i used santiago i also had peralta and miley yesterday and can probably get miley back for sun on fri early morning. However i did forget to take out e-jackshit in another league. eck. and frieri in 2 leagues.

        • Wilsonian says:
          (link)

@goodfold2: I’ve had Bailey, Shields, EJacks-Off, and Santiago this week. My ERA sits at a beautiful 6.34.

          • goodfold2 says:
            (link)

@Wilsonian: i own bailey in 3 leagues, but he’s a keeper, not a streamer. mine in my biggest money league is 4.35. also had kluber with the gem, then injured. and smyly today.

  86. Fungazi says:
    (link)

If Zimmerman might be moved to 1b because of how bad he is defensively, wouldn’t it be easier just to say he sucks at hitting too and make him a SP? They could cross an N off of Zimmermann’s jerseys?

In seriousness though, if he lost 3b, he would be useless.

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

      @Fungazi: good stuff right here.

      • Fungazi says:

          • Jiggy Nits says:
            (link)

@Grey: appreciate the advice. I’m leaning toward letting mejia go because of all the injury and “not throwing his hardest” stuff… or should I ignore it?

in one of my new leagues some geezer who needs homers and rbi’s and is like 350 innings projected over cap wouldn’t trade me iwakuma for 1 of soriano or rasmus. but he did come back with corbin for soriano. That one good too, eh?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Yup

  89. JRO says:
    (link)

Trade my Benoit for Lackey or benoit for archer

Other idea out there is melancon for cobb

My closers are melancon benoit paps(killin me) and kenley.

I could hold on to them and pick up a streamer which this week would be Gaudin. I have limited transactions so dont want to be streaming too much.

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

@JRO: stay away from Cobb, he’s on the 60 day DL now. He might not pitch this season.

    • Grey

      (link)

      Lackey

      • JRO says:
        (link)

@Grey: I could also get fieri thrown into the lackey deal, take him or leave em. I could use roster spot for something else?

Nice little one-two from Coleman and Collins there for me in the RCL…

    Grey

    Seriously…

This is ridiculous. Is he hurt?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Nah, just swinging at lousy pitches…

    • Wilsonian says:
      (link)

@TarmanGotHim: I hate Prince Fielder. I’ve run trying to trade him for a month. Can’t give him away. Kendrys is more valuable than he is.

      • TarmanGotHim says:
        (link)

@Wilsonian: I am so frustrated. I feel like he will snap outta this funk just in time for when fantasy owners most need him. I’m crushing it in all my leagues, this league I am 8 1/2 in first, and just traded Machado and Puig for Votto so I’m trying to figure this out. Haha.

      • FrankGrimes says:
        (link)

@Wilsonian: I said same thing bout JUp last month haha

        • Wilsonian says:

  96. SteveNZ says:
    (link)

Anyone in a deep league who inadvertently left Westbrook active is in for a nasty surprise.

    • letsgobravos says:
      (link)

@SteveNZ: Agreed. Saw the score and thought Miller had been shelled. Traded him on my standard league for Harper a couple of weeks ago and had him starting on my RP heavy team where a shellacking would have doomed my ERA and WHIP for the week. If he hit the DL I’ll probably dump him.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Yeah, we got screwed by today’s start…

      • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:

        • Grey

          Grey says:

          12 team NL-Only

          • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
            (link)

@Grey: that would count. that’d be the same as 24 team mixed. Yeah, really deep league.

  97. letsgobravos says:
    (link)

Damn, one of my teams has 13 hits tonight and only 2 fucking RBIs. .404 with a .990 OPS and only 8 RBIs for the week. Opponent is batting .120 and has 4 RBIs.

    • letsgobravos says:
      (link)

      @letsgobravos: 15 hits, still 2 RBIs…damnnnnnit. Only lead RBIs 8-6 despite having a .396-.187 lead on AVG.

  98. SteveNZ says:
    (link)

Look at Matt Joyce with his 2-2. Hope they leave Delgado in long enough for him to face him again.

  99. Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
    (link)

starting to look like wright will be high leverage middle innings guy, that’s at least twice in last 2 or 3 days he’s guy to come in with lead and guys on but way before late innings. Kinda like HOU’s Smyly.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      Ha, high leverage… Mmm-hmm…

      • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
        (link)

@Grey: 2 guys on, no outs, tie game.

  100. SteveNZ says:
    (link)

Easy, Royals. 3-run lead is enough.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

    (link)

    Come on D-Rob. Don’t eff this up…

    • SteveNZ says:
      (link)

@SteveNZ: Jesus, Blackley. One out is all you need.

      • SteveNZ says:
        (link)

@SteveNZ: Bloody hell, he’s terrible. Why dio I even have him on my team?

(It’s his SP eligibility, that’s why.)

        • SteveNZ says:
          (link)

@SteveNZ: How am I supposed to win WHIP with that kind of shit going on?

          • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
            (link)

            @SteveNZ: he’s the really poor man’s smyly.

  102. SteveNZ says:
    (link)

Gomes! Hope we get some more of this tomorrow…

    • chunk says:
      (link)

@SteveNZ: just added him based on TRON without even knowing he hit one today already.

  103. poop says:
    (link)

    did Archer get injured?

    • SteveNZ says:
      (link)

@poop: According to Friend-of-Razzball, Jason Collette, broadcast said he was removed as a precaution for forearm tightness…

    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
      (link)

@poop: should be asking that about alex torres, as he just got a hit against him, with 2 earned runs attached to it. That dude has been as god-like as mcgee last year. I guess he had to have, it was only after 30 pitches.

      • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
        (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: if torres took his roster spot that would rule, as nobody in my league would notice after just today and i could grab him on sunday.

        • poop says:
          (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: report says left forearm tightness on right handed Archer and move was precautionary. ESPN report didn’t seem overly concerned.

@Grey: if somebody else takes that job before sun i’ll drop him and pickup either richards/milone/keep niese/go back to robertson/carmart. he’s my first loss of the week, even with bailey yesterday. my opp in that league may only beat me in era/whip/losses. he has drew too, so now he’s barely losing rbi’s even though i out hit him 14-8.

      Kluber

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Grey: shit, i didn’t realize i asked 2 conflicting questions there. so kluber’s the one to be held since he’s coming back sooner or no? That’s some unequivocation right there.

Grey, I know you arent a big fan of Prado, but you should give him a little love tomorrow. Dude has been hot for a couple of weeks. .388 average w/ a homer, 9 RBIs, and 2 steals over that span. Monster night tonight, 4/4 w/ 2 runs, a homer and 4 RBIs.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before…

Rolling with Starlin Castro and Franklin (rd, 11 keeper, 2B eligible as well)as my SS’s in h2h keeper league……Crazy to drop Castro for Bogaerts?

p.s. I was the one who was said Shields would be good for something all pre-season, while you were not a fan…..flipped him for Jose Fernandez(rd 12 keeper) right before JFer’scomplete game SO and Shields’s 7 run blow-up…….turns out we were both right….HA!

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Yeah, crazy to drop Castro there… Nice!

      • sange_da_man says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

Drop Franklin for him when he comes up or just stick with my 2 SS’s and choose from Profar, or Franklin to join JFer as my keepers next year….

  122. Dave says:
