Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Trade deadline is approaching so we figured, you know, we should talk about it.  Nick got Smokey and Tom locked in the Fantasy Octagon (which isn’t 99.999999% as dangerous, but don’t tell the combatants) and after much prodding got them to fisticuffs over which bullpens will be in flux with the trade deadline looming.  “Huston Street ain’t going nowhere!”  “Oh yeah?  Well I’m gonna armbar you ’til Steve Cishek gets traded!”  They also discussed Tom’s recent trip to Bolivia and Smokey’s recent trip to Trenton.  A women’s prison and Pork Roll within a half mile?  I’m going Trenton.  Rudy was supposed to join us to discuss deadline strategies, but he came down with a case of the family-was-out-of-the-house-all-day-so-I-downloaded-a-boatload-of-porn-itis, so I filled in for a double segment.  You, “Can I get an order of moustachioed advice please?  Wait, what?  I can supersize it!  Yes please!”  We also talked trading deadline news.  In the spirit of the trading season, I went to the Salvation Army and traded a dirty pair of boxers for a pair of parachute pants then was told that wasn’t how it worked and I declared war on the Salvation Army.  We also discussed my penchant for giving away coveted rookies in keeper leagues to try to win for the current year.  When they were all rookies, I had Braun, Prince, Reyes and Hanley in an NL only keeper, but, hey, at least I finished 5th that one year and got my league fee back.  Finally, we talked about my trip to Indiana.  Anyway, here’s the Razzball Podcast (now with July 31st implications):

Not for those of us who were beat to the punch on the stash. Hope he gets dropped again, then gets called up and the loser now will be later to win. The callups they are a comin’.

Aruba’s on the map, right next to where it says, “Be careful or you might get kidnapped.” Could be a big impact, but above someone just wrote he’s not being called up… Maybe the Phils will get him…

    Grey,

Trade my JUpton/Rizzo/Bum for his Stanton/Craig/Hellickson or Archer? Tried for a better sp, but he declined. Would you do this deal – if so, do you like Hellickson or Archer ROS? He also offered Cueto but I don’t trust him at all this year.

My current SP’s are Scherzer/Bum/Peavy/Burnett/Kluber/Cole/Chen/Beachy/Kazmir with Iwakuma at RP spot.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      • poop says:
        (link)

@Grey: Grey – Cobb is looking to maybe comeback soon. Will the Rays take Archer or Hernandez out of the rotation when Cobb gets back?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Could see either, plus they might get Peavy

          • poop says:
            (link)

@Grey: Thanks Grey – in light of that issue would you rather have Hellickson for ROS? Both play in the AL east and it looks like Archer’s ERA is outperforming his FIP by almost 2 runs and his K/BB ratio is unimpressive. Hellickson has many of the same concerns, only his ERA is above his FIP, suggesting he’s been a little unlucky. All that said, till prefer Archer?

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

I don’t want either and wouldn’t start them in a majority of their games, I’d go for Archer…

A trade was just sent to me. His Segura & De Aza for my Papelbon, Zobrist & Trumbo . I’m in a 10-team Yahoo H2H points league. Papelbon has been frustrating and I could add FA’s Benoit, Frieri, Melancon or Perkins if I did accept. I also currently have Zobrist as my SS and Trumbo as my 3B. I would have Lawrie to fill in at 3rd for Trumbo. Which side would you want?

Good afternoon, just wondering about your thoughts about Jeter for the rest of the year? Using him as a backup to Tulo, but there’s some other decent options avialable such as N. Franklin.

  6. John says:

    From previous post……

I have Beachy and Kluber. I know you guys love Kluber, but when I look at his upcoming schedule it makes me wonder. After this Wed vCHW (where I would definitely start him), here is his projected schedule:

    vDET
    vLAA
    @OAK
    @LAA
    @ATL
    vBAL

Those are some pretty tough starts. So….. in a 10 team league where I have the following pitchers on WW, do I:

    A) keep both
    B) drop one (for whom – see below)
    C) C gave up 7 ER last night too, so there is no C
    D) Drop both (for whom – see below)
    E) Stream from those below

    Wheeler
    Kennedy
    Johnson
    Haren
    Nolasco
    Westbrook
    Cahill
    M. Gonzalez
    Doubront
    Kazmir
    Peralta
    Wandy
    Chen
    Vogelsong
    Stults
    Santiago
    Gee
    Cashner
    Morton
    Straily
    Norris
    McDonald

10 team H2H league. Just got offered his Myers/Garza for my Liriano/Stanton straight up. I’m very tempted.

I love Liriano right now though and would like to counter with someone else though I’m not sure he’d be interested in a lesser pairing.

    What do you think?

Grey… your guidance with the following would be much appreciated…

    1. For tomorrow only:

Miguel Gonzalez (vs. HOU, SON $11) or Lackey (vs. Sea, SON $10.7)

    2. Start only one on Friday:

    Sabathia (@SD, SON $16.5) or Medlen (@Phi, SON $26.3)

    C.

    4. If you could own either Sabathia or Medlen for the rest of the year, who would you rather have?

    5. Going on a trip next week and won’t be able to touch my lineup for at least 7 days (i.e. no streaming). Does Gerrit Cole sound ok to use as my last SP during that time? Other options would be Nova and Cingrani.

  12. Steering away from the sex talk for a minute …. I’m contemplating trading Leonys Martin for Asdrubal Cabrera in a very deep AL-only league. It’s a dynasty league where you keep all players for long-term. I sorta need a shortstop and have surplus outfielders — but is it worth it, considering Asdrubal might be traded by the Indians out of the American League, to make room for F. Lindor? (I would get compensation for Asdrubal, but not full value.) HELP!!!

    • Grey

      Grey says:

So latest reports are that the Dbacks are the frontrunners for peavy atm. I know there’s not much point to giving the rumor mill that much importance, but does peavy’s stock go up here significantly? Despite the reputation, Chase has been the 7th best pitchers’ park this year somehow.

My closers are Balfour and Cisek…R.Soriano was just dropped. Should I try and claim him off waivers and drop Cisek?

    Scond question…
I have Yadi Molina and Gattis as my catchers.

I was offered Adam Jones for Molina and Lynn. My depth at SP is pretty good, Jones would make my outfield and Util look like this

    Stanton
    Cargo
    Puig
    Jones

This guy is in dire need of a catcher. Should I pull the trigger and just put Gattis at catcher?

Hey Grey, given all that’s gone down with Braun, at what price would you be comfortable locking him in today for the start of 2014? Lets assume guys like Miggy go for $60-70 and guys like Prince go for $45-50. Above what price does Braun become no longer a good deal? And below what price does he become a steal to grab now and stash for the start of 2014?

    Please and thanks man.

how he will react , or be affected by , them .

sure , coming off peds might have some say in his future performance ,

Yeah, he’s around there though… Probably mid-30’s overall, $27-ish out of $260 in mixed leagues…

              • OaktownSteve says:
                (link)

                @Grey:

I like him a less than you. The original question had a league that seemed like top talent went higher than a 260 mixer. I probably wouldn’t buy him unless it was lower 20’s in the 260 mix. Very bearish.

                  Grey says:

                    @Grey:

Maybe. The body breaking down thing is the primary, but I see a whole bundle of risk there. And it gives me pause. Or paws. Not it’s pause. I checked.

Who am I getting at 25 instead? That’s low end OF2 range. Choo? Beltran? Guy like that? My spidey sense says bewared.

Nah, high-end 2 OF…Choo and Beltran are prolly closer to 50-ish… Arenado!

    • OaktownSteve says:
      (link)

      @Z:

My two cents, I wouldn’t buy him unless the discount was very deep. Low thirties in your scenario and maybe not even then. He’s hit 9 homers in 61 games this year which prorates out to 24 homers. There will be injury risk with him for the rest of his career in my opinion as he hits 30 years old and with his drug history. There will likely be psychological effects from not having his superpowers and perhaps from the stigma as well. Too many risks. That isn’t to say he can’t be a good buy at some price point but I’ve seen a lot of touts suggesting he holds a higher percentage of his value and I doubt that will be true.

      • Z says:
        (link)

@OaktownSteve: and @Grey — If he’s grabbable right now at $32 you’d say pass? Per Grey’s response, I’m assuming he thinks pass. What do you think?

          • goodfold2 says:
            (link)

@Grey: you’re in roto leagues, of course, so saves hunting not worth as much as not screwing over ratios, i’m guessing is rationale? i’m only holding cisnero in 16 teamer (benched him immediately, since opp this week only has 1 closer) in case he not only looks half decent, but also is the closer. i have bastardo there as well, who i played, and he got a nice inning today.

            • goodfold2 says:
              (link)

@goodfold2: in a 10 teamer where i already have 4 closers i’m holding gregerson and bastardo exactly, and wouldn’t drop for cisnero there either. that’s only due to having 4 other guys though.

    C: Napoli
    1B: A-Gon
    2B: Carpenter
    3B:Longo
    SS: Franklin
    OF: Bautista, Harper, Bruce
    Util: Holliday, Rizzo
    BN: E. Young

SP: Sherzer, Lee, Moore, Iwakuma, A. Sanchez, Bailey, Peavy, Garza, Dickey
    RP: Holland, Perkins, Henderson

    DL: Willingham, Ludwick

As you can see, I only have one offensive bench spotso very little to work with.
    1) Should I drop a strugging Dickey for Scheirholtz, L. Martin, Morse or Vaciedo to add some bench depth?
    2) If yes, which player do I grab first based on my team makeup?

@Grey: Pretty good, it automatically adjusts the ohm’s to the resistance of your tank. It even tells you how long your drag was….which makes me think my device is watching me a little too close. You should ask your awesome shop what they think of the e-vic….

    Grey,

    Offense has stalled of late.
    C- VMart
    1b- Fielder
    2b-Kinsler
    3b- Breltre
    SS- E. Cabrera
    OF- Pence, Choo, Holliday
    Util- Jennings, Zobrist
    Bench- Konerko, LaRoche
    DL- A-RAM

SP- Harvey, Grienke, Zimmerman, Samardzija, Bailey, Fister, Chacin (or a streamer)
    RP- Ziegler, Street, Mujica, Perkins

Thoughts on trading Zimmerman for Butler? I might be able to get A Cab or Rendon as throw in, but the centerpiece would be Butler. I can’t get anyone to bite on Zimmerman.

    Thanks.

    Grey-Gaine,

12 tm nl only. im in first in HR’s, last place in SB’s.

Just traded for everth cabrera, but think I’m going to need some more help. I was offered Jean Segura ($10 – can be kept 2 years) for Joey Votto ($37 – can be kept 2 years).

I’m really contemplating it, Votto’s not hitting the HR’s, I don’t think there will be THAT big of a dropoff in power, but the increase in speed would be huge.

    thoughts?

    take Segura for votto?

@royce!: if you have any leeway this week on saves (i’m playing a guy with 1 closer) just bench cisnero until he gets 1 save and it’s likely he both a.looks half decent (like broxton last year, or myers except for those really bad 2 outings) and b. after that gets future chances. That way, at the worst you didn’t screw over your ratios for this week.

@SteveNZ: Jesus effing Christ, that was horrible. If they’d used him at the top of the 7th they (and me) might not be in this mess.

Watching Top Chef Masters…my count might be unreliable, but I think that only minutes like 25-35 featured cooking. Is there a food shortage or something?

HA! I hate the new twist…That online sous chef thing… I’m not watching that crap, just show me cooking on the show! Less sky diving!

@Grey: I might watch the online sous chef thing to see if their assistants are also competing in some other medium, hopefully cassette.

@poop: you hadn’t read about his knee problem in the last month. he’s known for pretty much refusing to rest anything more than 1 day at a time. He’s been like that for many years, but before nobody cared in fantasy for the most part.

another orphan league pickup with 4 keepers h2h 12 team. had to drop 4 people immediately.
    ridiculously good pitchers:
    shields/jo-fer/kendrick/king Felix/latos/w.Chen/fister/greinke
wilhelmsen/jansen/holland/rivera/chapman/frieri (this guy’s got 3 top 8 closers)wow. this team has a 56 net saves lead on 2nd place with 126 to 70 (net saves, not just saves). King hell monster of all pitching except holds. I’ll drop kendrick for 8th inning guy (fien maybe, already stashed broxton at DL)

Offense:really bad at everything except steals
with no current bench hitters. braun/bogaerts at NA slots.
i’m assuming kendrick/machado/arendado /assdrubal/ellsbury/rasmus are locked in with no need to replace from waivers.

1.however are any of these waiver guys
    ligares/alonso/martin/a.ellis/maxwell/saunders/venable/g.jones
    better at their positions than
    just peachy/morales (1st)/joyce/upton/lawrie (util)/

    2. i’m guessing i should just put almost all of my closers and starters up to trade for OF and or holds guys?
    3. which 4 to keep
upton/braun/felix/ells/machado/grienke? Or would it be better to put contending teams with any sort of pitcher need over the hump to get REALLY good keepers, like McCutchen/Trout? Assuming that’s even possible. thanks.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      1. Alonso over JP 2. Sure 3. Not Braun, Greinke Sure, try to get Trout or McCutchen

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

        @Grey:
        1. alonso only qualifies at 1b. Just peachy is a catcher. I’m assuming you meant Alonso over Morales?
        3. so save upton/ellsbury/king felix/machado over braun? wow. If I can trade Greinke or more pitchers for a top 15 guy, who gets bumped from the 4?

        • Grey

          Grey says:

          1. Lagares over Joyce… 2. Upton

          • goodfold2 says:
            (link)

@Grey: 1. so still morales over alonso then? got every thing else done. i’m hunting good teams with at least 5 keeper types who are in bad shape in pitching.

            • goodfold2 says:
              (link)

@goodfold2: shit for 1 ligares only qualifies at CF, i have
              joyce (LF,RF)
              Upton (LF,RF)
              ellsbury CF
              rasmus CF
so to replace Joyce it would have to be for one of maxwell/saunders/shuck/lough/reddick/g.jones/raj davis/venable.

i just noticed this. After moving some pieces around i could still get ligares, but to drop joyce it has to be a corner guy. First 2.5 days in these specific pos OF leagues. It does make it more realistic though.

              • goodfold2 says:
                (link)

@goodfold2: urrutia and dejesus also qualify at these corner spots.

1.10 team h2h league for bench bat. could be steals only.
headley (already own)/venable/victorino/martin/raj davis/schierholtz/alonso/lawrie/viciedo. Position does not matter. could take over for machado sometimes while he’s massively slumping. have 2 utils in this league.

@MB: any of those in a redraft. def. j up in a keeper, maybe rios, probably not ‘day.

        @chunk: rios this year alone.
