You couldn’t bear to think of commuting to work with nothing but one of those other guy’s fantasy baseball podcasts, so you called out sick and went into the woods to hibernate.  You huddled around your campfire all winter waiting for the Razzball podcast to return.  At one point, all you had was the warmth from some embers and a bear carcass that you killed with your truck.  You had gangrene in one hand and you hadn’t soaped yourself in five months.  Did it all have to be so difficult?  Can’t Razzball bring the fantasy baseball podcast back sooner just so you could come out of hibernation and have something to listen to on the way to work?  Did you even have a job anymore?  Calling out sick for five months because of a lack of commuting entertainment seemed like a barely passable excuse when you told the HR person.  Was that the HR person or a janitor picking up the phone?  Crap, this better be the best fantasy baseball podcast you’ve ever heard in your whole life.  Or at least in the last five months.  Well, the wait is over, prematurely balding man.  The Razzball podcast has returned in all its podcasty goodness.  We have a new producer, new guests, but the same old awkward pauses and elongated ummmmm’s.  That’s not feedback in your headphones, that’s my high-pitched laugh!  That’s not your 11th grade math teacher babbling on, that’s Rudy!  That’s not Barry White, that’s the podcast host, Nick!   That’s not Jaywrong, that’s… No, actually, I think it might be Jaywrong.  Anyway, here’s the Razzball podcast, now in like 24 segments:

@Grey: 12 team, 5 x 5, standard roto league. we are allowed two keepers per team (lose pick of round listed). options below with years left of keeper eligibility after this season in parenthesis. who do you like?

    gio, 8th round (3)
    adam jones, 11th round (3)
    carlos gonzalez, 16th round (0)
    cespedes, 18th round (3)
    aroldis, 20th round (3)
    rizzo, 25th round (3)

based on your rankings, assuming jones and cargo but figured id ask. also, if it matters, it is a 3 OF league.

    thanks!

      CarGo and Rizzo…

        (link)

@Grey: Interesting…ok….follow up, i have the 6 pick in our draft. cutch may slip, but if not, ill probably be looking at my choice of your top first basemen (pujols, fielder, votto) or giancarlo. do i take a 1b and fill my dh early (in our draft we need to fill our starting lineup before we can draft bench players) or salvage my 2012 trapper keeper and go with giani?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

          Take a 1B… You have a corner man…

          • herschel says:
            (link)

@Grey: no corner or mi. we just play AL style lineup 8 positions plus a DH (cbs league). stick with a 1b?

              Grey says:
              (link)

@Grey: hope i can patch up the knife marks i left in my TK after his DL stint from last year…

so just to conclude, given the format, you prefer cargo, giancarlo, rizzo, 11th round pick (plus 3 years of rizzo in late rounds) to cargo, pujols, a jones, 25th round pick (3 years of jones in mid rounds)?

      Grey says:
      (link)

Hmm… I’m a bit computer-stupid…, You can listen to it right in the post on the player…. Not sure, maybe someone else has some ideas… If this helps, the RSS podcast feed is:

      http://razzball.com/feed/podcast/

      • Peter says:
        (link)

@Grey: This just might do the trick! I was just using the entire razzball feed in my podcast catcher, but it also would grab all the text-only articles (not that I don’t read them). I’ll let you know how it works out after more podcasts are in the books!

On a side note – in a 12 team 6×6 roto (Losses/OPS), if you waited on drafting your 1SP, who would you prefer – Cueto, Shields, or Medlen?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Hehe… I was thinking someone would say that once I said they denied it…

      • Carnac says:
        (link)

@Grey: MLB is required to deny it, aren’t they? They can’t say a peep until the internal , several week-long investigation/appeal is complete. As I recall, during the (last) Braun positive test, this became an issue because MLB confirmed something before Braun had finished his appeal process.

That said, I don’t believe ANYTHING unless I hear it from Peter Gammons’ gravely voice. Still awaiting his word on the whole Galileo situation.

But kinda fun to note: Deadspin has the twitter source of the rumors wrong. It was actually Joe Bisceglie who posted it first. Who’s Joe Bisceglie? Not a reporter, but a sports commentator… who happened to scoop everyone on the Melky Cabrera positive last year. (He tweeted about it 10 days before the CSN journalist Deadspin links as the first source of the Melky rumors.) Lookie here:

        http://www.sportsgrid.com/mlb/robinson-cano-alex-rodriguez-curtis-granderson-and-ryan-braun-might-face-50-game-ped-related-suspensions-this-season/

(Either Deadspin made an error by not citing him or won’t do it because a) justifiably, he’s no journalist and b) he writes for a Deadspin-ish type site that they wouldn’t want to drive any traffic to.)

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

I anxiously await Gammons’s call on Sasquatch, as well. And I await his next album! Yeah, the Deadspin post I linked to is actually old… Those were old rumors that someone else started last year… But this is totally ridiculous until someone worthwhile actually says something…

My top pick (vogelsong) was snapped up. However the guy dropped aj burnett for him. The other guys are e-jax, jaime garcia, petite, holland, wandy and hammel.

16 team league, $260 budget, 5 x 5 but use OBP and SLG instead of AVG and HR, already keeping Alcides Escobar at $6 per your advice yesterday, but now wondering about Jean Segura at $6 (he barely exceeded the rookie cutoff, otherwise I’d be able to keep him at $1, darn!). Do you think he’s a good option at $6?

How much of this game is actual numbers? I believe in luck, gut instinct, observations and playing by some self inflicted pseudo-philosophical rules while also seeing the numbers but not living by them as absolute truth. Never done me wrong yet. Any thoughts.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Observations is a wide topic… I believe watching players is invaluable… If someone is hitting the ball hard but right at fielders, it’s worth noting…

      • Jack Full of Hate says:
        (link)

@Grey: I keep reading all these number references when trying to debate a player to these numbers say this and these numbers say that. I’ve never been big on that. If anything i play this game with probability and opportunity more than anything else.

I was debating Romo yesterday in the comments with what appeared to be some Giant fan. I don’t like Romo, I don’t trust him, i would advise anyone that they are better off not owning him and going after someone else. First for bochy’s comments about committee, second for the way he pitches, and third because the Giants are still not a great offensive team. They were stupid hot last year at the end and thats about it. Reminds me of that lame run the Cardinals made to their last two world series titles. Talk about a snozzefest of a team. Nothing exciting, not too much great about them and will not go down as an all time great team, like the Giants last two world series titles. Speaking of post season, we need to stop falling victim to the fantasy relevance of a player based on what they did in the post season. I can recall BJ Upton and David Freese from the recent past that got way over drafted because of what they did in october.

I grew up around a couple guys that played college, pro and worked as pitching coaches and everything I learned from them was to watch a pitcher not a stat sheet. See his delivery, his release point, where he places the ball, movement on the ball. I made a trade in ’06, Isringhausen for Saito, right when he took over as the dodgers closer and Isring was one of the top closers of the first half. well i knew isring was a lot of smoke and mirrors, he imploded in the 2nd half, and Saito killed it with this amazing smooth break on his slider. The numbers said i was wrong, everyone in my league thought I was crazy, and at the end of the day i won it all and collected $500. My point is that numbers can give you an edge but not the complete story.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Anyone (maybe even one of us) can get three batters out if they have one good pitch… Mediocre starters can make great closers (Eck)… The opposite can be true, a closer could go bad and be unable to get anyone out for a month…. See every closer last April, Axford, etc… That’s SAGNOF… I think one big thing against Romo is Bochy seems fine with just going to someone else and sticking with that other guy if he does well (no allegiance)… Also, I think Bochy has some decent arms behind Romo, so two hiccups could turn into the 8th inning for Romo very quickly… So Romo could be just okay and get 35 saves, there’s value there, but he shouldn’t be overdrafted….

          • Jack Full of Hate says:
            (link)

@Grey: to quote you ” he can do that on your team” or was it “I wouldn’t touch him with your team”

I won’t touch an AL East pitcher, its not that they won’t be great, Price, but I’ll pass on them for someone else. You should of referenced Perkins above

    Glad the podcast is back!

I’m in a keeper league and already have Trout on board for the season for a later round pick. In addition to Trout, some other top hitters are off the board due to keepers so the first couple rounds are slightly watered down. With that in mind, would you prefer a round 1-2 combo of Cano and Kershaw, or Cano and a SS (either Hanley or Reyes)?

    • Grey

    Grey,
Consider me a devoted disciple, well not like a crazy suicide bomber or one those whackos from westboro baptist church out picketing funerals. But you’re a main reason I’ve maintained a top 4 finish including a championship (2010) since ’08. I feel like you think like myself which is a contrarian 1st. So kudos to you, now back to heart of the matter. Quick question I’ve be diving into your projections/rankings since they came out last month and comparing your projections to the usual; zips, marcel, steamer, cairo, fans, etc. There are a few that sticks out but no one greater than Gardner. You have him pegged for 102 runs which is easily 20+ than other projections. I need to no one what is going on that crazy brain of yours because I’m high on him too but I cant see 102 runs with grandy out a bit and of course if he bats so low in the lineup. If he bats leadoff watch out but are expectign him to start the season there? Also .280 would be sick, he’s like a poor man’s bourn from last year. I need more information cause I want to draft him and he could be a steal in our auction draft. cheap steals, high runs, and we are now 8×8 H2H with k’s gone from hitting category so his value goes up even more. Thanks, keep up the not so bad, half ass brainwashing work.

Ha! No problem…. I think he’ll be moved to the top of the order, now more or so with Grandy and A-Rod out and Jeter hurting… Gardner at the top of the lineup for only 90 games, and he’ll be the new Bourn… I really like him…

      • G Money says:
        (link)

@Grey: That’s why I love you instant gratification. Your like porn only safe for work. Thanks for the quick response as usual. I will be targeting Gardner now for sure. The next Bourn, I’m picturing the two in a movie like Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson in White Men Can’t Jump. But the plot is they go around the country playing pickup 100 yard dash races for money ( cause this like pool and basketball happen all the time). Bourn races all fast and there’s gardner in the background doing some funny stretch and all the homeboys laughing at him in his 1980′s nike shorts, headband, and retro shoes. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8gtnkCO7b1qlo013o1_400.jpg (kind of looks like you a bit) Bourn talks him all up like he cant run and he smokes the field and they drive away with the cash in the old beat up ’75 impala. Oh god where am i going with this.

Ah the beauty, Can’t wait to get home and stream this shizz.

Question about a custom ESPN 10 team H2H league 8X8 with 6 keepers

    Stats are for hitters:
Hits, AVG, OBP, HR, XBH, Runs, RBI, SB

    Stats for Pitchers:
    K, W, L, QS, WHIP, ERA, K/9, S

Does this change the strategy all that much in terms of what is valued. I believe it takes SAGNOF to the extreme because of both OBP and XBH making guys like Bourn even less valuable and sluggers that much more valuable. Also, it limits the effectiveness of streaming pitchers slightly because of K/9 and the Losses and the WHIP.

    I’m currently keeping:
Pujols, Stanton, Cargo, Tulo, Bruce, and Zobrist

I’m hoping to get Goldschmidt in the first round, and then target a lot of other sleepers undervalued in my league, but given the stats, is there something I’m missing that would completely change the way I value the players from the standard 5X5?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Yeah, it would completely devalue steals and saves and streaming… It boosts up high K/9 relievers though… Could be even middle relievers…

      • Robert says:
        (link)

@Grey: It’s funny you mention that, I picked up high 10+ K/9 relievers that were next in line guys last year: Addison Reed, Tyler Clippard, and Bobby Parnell and they all ended up closing earlier rather than later, and didn’t have to waste picks on those guys. Streaming seems valuable still if losses is a lost cause and you just want to get Ks Wins and QS by sending up starter after starter. What do you think in terms of hitters though. As you can see by my keepers they are XBH guys with power, except Zobrist, but should I even bother with a speedster or two in the MI to see if I can steal (pun intended) stolen bases, or just go for RBI/Run/HR/XBH guys who usually also get you OBP and try to keep the average up?

I feel like this format also makes someone like Uggla more valuable because you can punt steals, but get power/XBH, and if you have to take a low batting average better a guy with 20-30 HR upside and 80-90 RBI upside than a guy who hits .240 with 30 SB and no power/XBH.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Agreed on Uggla… I’d punt SAGNOF type guys… Guys that are steals heavy are useless… The most steals I’d want from a guy are like what Zobrist gives…

          • Robert says:
            (link)

@Grey: how about at the top. Given your projections for reduced power on a guy like Trout, does that make him drop in the rankings below guys like Pujols, Stanton, etc? I know he’s still a high avg, and Runs guy and even with reduced HR, he’d still get a lot of XBHs.

            • Grey

              Grey says:
              (link)

              Trout is fine… He’s not a speed only guy…

              • Robert says:
                (link)

@Grey: I’m not saying he drops from 2-3 to 200, I’m just wondering given the format if he’s less valuable since you aren’t as bullish on his power numbers. I’m thinking of dropping your projections/rankings in excel and then giving extra weight to guys that bring OBP, Runs, RBI, HR, XBH, etc. so I re-org the speed guys down and create a custom list of rankings.

                • Grey

                  Grey says:
                  (link)

Trout could hit 20 homers and 40 doubles… There’s big value there… Then throw in he could give you a lot of categories… I wouldn’t drop him lower than I have him…

  20. Gary says:
    (link)

In H2H leagues, do you ever completely punt a category? Like just not draft any closers and not go for saves at all?

This is actually, by far, my favorite fantasy baseball website… then ESPN b/c that’s where my 2 leagues are… then I don’t have time in life for more (although if I were singe, I would).

I am actually coming out West for the first time next in the coming months (I asked you about tickets to Dodger Stadium a few months back and you answered, thank you).

        Tour #1… http://www.bobsbaseballtours.com

If you have any ideas on a “win a trip w/Grey” or something… let me now (or if you and your philly want to getaway).

I’d like to help sponsor if you need anything (and please feel free to delete this post since it’s probably me trying to promote *ME*, but, again, let me know…).

Or if you’re from the LA area and need to get picked-up at a Dodger game/dropped-off at an Angel game later that week…

Options (not Nebraska football in the 1980s)…

Hope your right about Rutledge this yr Grey. He impressed me last year and I traded for him in my dynasty league. He is a last round pick as well which makes his keeper value all the more intreaguing. Hope I have a nice SS this yr or until Profar comes up who I have on my roster as well. We keep 15 players every yr in my dynasty league. Check out my 15 keepers. I made some great picks in last years draft and also traded for a few players such as Pedroia and Gonzo which is why I have multiple 2nd round keepers. The round the player was drafted in and is kept at is next to their name.
    Giancarlo Stanton (1)

Looking for some draft strategy pointers for my 7×7 15 team league.

I pick last and also have no 2nd and 3rd picks. My 7 keepers are:
    1B Pujols
    2B Kinsler
    CF Kemp
    RF Bruce
    Util Rizzo
    SP Dickey
    SP Medlen

Should I go best available 3B/LF to start? Per your rankings Aramis is the best available 3B and Gordon at LF, Rollins at SS, Rosario at C. Best available SP is Scherzer but can’t see him falling to me. (next are Latos/Shields/Peavy/Cueto)

Love the work you guys do, but I’m not a fan at all of the new podcast. Don’t like the QUICK HITS from multiple analysts, don’t like the constant background music, and HATE that I feel like I’m listening to some schticky local radio station with the altered vocal transitions.
