Oh, him!  Yeah, you’ve never heard of him.  That’s okay, we have and you should.  Spencer is co-founder and CEO of Classic Baseball, LLC whose business is pitcher injuries.  That’s right; they know what you wish your local GM knew when he signed that kid with the funky delivery to the bajillion dollar contract.  They basically watch a ton of tape and look for mechanical flaws.  Kinda like how JayWrong watches a ton of porn and looks for mechanical flaws.  Or how Tony Gwynn watches a ton of Food Network shows.  Spencer consults directly with six major league teams about which pitchers will get injured.  His success rate is above, say, Verducci and his eponymous nonsense.  I’m going to try and get Spencer on again before next season to see if we can’t get some insider information about which pitchers are trouble areas for injuries, but right now Spencer is promoting a real-time baseball app that you use to try to predict outcomes of the game when you’re in the ballpark.  For instance, you’re in San Francisco and Lincecum’s on the mound, so you predict he’s going to get out of the inning in three batters and take four bong hits between innings (bong hits may or may not be included in the game).  Watch out, Candy Crush!  The real question is, with all these talents, can Spencer write blog posts?  I’m serious.  Everybody’s fired.  Me included.  In other podcast news, I’m on talking about Jason Heyward, Chris Davis, Yu Darvish, Jose Fernandez and Matt Harvey.  All the sexy names you know and love, plus Heyward.  Heyward can go *bleep* bleep* bleep* in his *bleeping* *bleep*.  Anyway, here’s the Razzball podcast (now with some doode who went to Oxford — la di da!):

I am in quite the predicament at SS in my 20 team mixed. I am currently starting Jordy Mercer/Josh Harrison, and on the off day recently started Jake Elmore, wtf. Recently, I received a trade offer: my Cespedes for his Swisher and Castro. I would be left with Giancarlo, Holliday, and Junior Lake in the OF. I do have Jeter, and Bourjos on the DL. Is Castro really a significant upgrade from waiver fodder at this point?

Go for it, but you’ll need to keep switching guys the rest of the season…

    • Gareth says:
      (link)

@Ty: Shortstop is so weak, if you are using Castro then you are resigned to having a black hole there. I was afraid to drop him. I eventually cut him a few weeks back and hes still sitting on the wire. Dudes been Awful.

If you are in a Roto, Stream Shortstops based on category needs for the rest of the season. If its Head to head, go with the hot hand.

      • Grey's Goatee says:
        (link)

        @Gareth:

This is great advice. If you’re in a H2H league, than a guy like JJ Hardy may be more valuable than Villar, and Stanton may be more valuable than CarGom.

However, in roto, it may be the opposite if you have solid numbers in HR and RBIs but are lacking in SBs and R/AVG.

Address your needs, and forget the name brand of certain guys.

        • Ty says:

@Grey’s Goatee: thanks guys… I have zobrist to stream also. I have him in right now with Castro on my bench. I guess I’m just tired of waiting for Castro to snap out of it… I don’t think it’s going to happen.

I was offered Votto and Rosario for my AJones and Pujols in my H2H keeper league.

We have a $100 keeper budget, Votto would be $15 to keep, AJones will be $25 to keep, Pujols and Rosario will be $5 each to keep. I’m also running Ike and Pierzynski out there at catcher and 1B right now.

Turned into a rebuilding year for me and my current roster is UGLY. Mark Reynolds is active cuz at least he has a chance to get some ABs somewhere unlike all my DLed guys. But here is how it’s shaping up for me next year. 4X4 $300 budget, 12 keepers next years prices ($5 inflation after 3 years, included the 2014 bump below):

    J Castro $2, W Ramos $2, Votto $23, Tulo $29, Hanley $20. Kershaw $26, Sale $7, MadBum $17, Latos $12, Moore $12, J Parker $2, Cishek $7.

$149, so $151 to spend on 11 new guys. My offensive core is concentrated, a bit injury prone and getting expensive. My starters are pretty unreal (all 25 or under). I’ll be in win now mode next year, and ready to deal for bats from my pitching surplus.

W Ramos not a sure thing, have some other fringey guys who may get kept instead depending on how they finish and look going into the draft: AJax $13, Hicks $2, Revere $2, Lawrie $17, Bourgos $6. Any thoughts?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Austin Jackson is is better than either of your catchers who are a waste of spots…

      • Jacks says:
        (link)

@Grey: Hmmm, AJax’s value takes a hit I think in a league that doesn’t count runs. But he will be a prime breakout candidate. On the fence.

You think $2 catchers are wastes of spots? So hard to find 20 HR potential catchers who won’t kill you in BA. Castro would go for $10 in draft with all our Stanford grads and Ramos $5 plus. Thinking I can do better than AJax for $13 in OF, but would take a big downgrade on $2 catchers if I release these …. thanks

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Didn’t you find these catchers this year for $2?

          • Jacks says:
            (link)

@Grey: Castro is having a breakout year. Ramos had an injury discount. I understand the general point about not wasting precious spots on Catchers … but in my case I’m not crowding out anything all that good.

              Grey says:

  26. Uggla to the eye doctor. DL’d for an undtermined time. Had to really search for this info. Is this not tickerworthy?! For some of us it is. In a league with dangerously limited moves left, my options are Walker, Dozier, Beckham and Walter LeMatheu. Pathetic. May be able to hold Uggla for a 7 day-er, but in a pennant race. F’in Uggla. Please recommend a course of action. Thank you.

      Tickerworthy? Go with Walker…

      • @Grey: The running ticker of stats and news at the bottom of the TV screen while watching a game, Sportscenter, MLB TV, etc. Often keeps you awake on the barstool. Often far more interesting than the actual game, or soneone attempting to converse with you. The Uggla eyesight news was deemed, not Tickerworthy. Perhaps justifiably in consideration of Uggla’s sub Mendoza line effort and subsequent goat-f’ing of his owners’ AVG category all season. Thanks for the help Grey. Much appreciated.

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

        @SteveNZ:

That’s the A’s. Lineup is fluid, ride the hot hand. Probably like the match up with Lyles vs Red Dog. It really is the craziest thing. He’s been sub-MLB caliber since late Aug last year. He was according to press very close to being moved to Sacto. Would have months ago if not for his defense (which has been less spectacular but otherwise every bit as good as last year). Maybe the threat of demotion lit the fire. God knows it came just in time for the A’s.

        • SteveNZ says:
          (link)

@OaktownSteve: I’ve noticed that their lineup has been really fluid this year – and putting some guys in some odd-looking spots.

Do you think that’s their ‘thing’ this year? Maybe using the data they have to wring every last drop of value out of their guys by moving them up and down the lineup depending on who they’re facing?

          Almost like they’re managing a fantasy team…

          • OaktownSteve says:
            (link)

            @SteveNZ:

They are so much fun. I think there is certainly some quantitative stuff that goes into the choices but I think Beane trusts Melvin more than he has in years past, so I think a lot of it also comes from Melvin and staff reviewing numbers from the front office, looking a film, coming up with a game plan and Bob has final say on the lineup.

            • SteveNZ says:
              (link)

@OaktownSteve: Wonder if it’s a bit of zigging when others are zagging too. The accepted wisdom is to retain a relatively consistent lineup, right?

              • OaktownSteve says:
                (link)

                @SteveNZ:

A’s are pretty clear that you play for them you can expect to platoon, play multiple positions and move around in the lineup. The one guy who really doesn’t seem to like it is Chris Young and it shows in the numbers.

However, I am streaming Chris. He’s a Houston native and loves the home cooking. Lifetime .355 vs Houston with 12 homers and 9 steals in 147 ABs.

Took your advice and dropped Headley for Smoak yesterday. 12tm H2h Redraft 6×6 OPS league. Have Butler & Smoak at UTIL, Yelich on bench. Drop Yelich for Lambo on an upside play? Will have to drop Yelich/Lambo/Smoak when Kemp comes off DL anyway. So basically your top 2 of those 3? I could use power #’s

If I’m starting DJ LeM and Venable in the ol’ H2H, I probably have enough speed to be able to start Reddick over Rajai, right?

Or is Dempster an easy guy to steal on? In which case I may give Rajai a spin…

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

The Red Sox are very easy to steal on… Really depends on how badly you need steals vs. power…

      • SteveNZ says:
        (link)

@Grey: Hah, I’m up against the guy in 1st – he’s second in total steals on the season and 4th in HRs (I’m third).

        He has Trout…

@Grey: Yeah, I’ll give him a whirl. Of course we all know what Reddick will do now.

@Grey: Haw haw. Have him on a couple of other teams, and I’m not likely to do better or worse than 4th in the ol’ H2H, so it’s not a big deal if I’m sonavabenched there.

Ugg. Giordano’s is the last of the “Big 4″ of Chicago famous pizzas. Next time go either Pizzeria Uno/Due (Ohio St. location – others are NOT acceptable. Trust me.) or Lou Malnotti’s. Gino’s East would be a distant yet respectable 3rd then Giordani’s well behind them.

If you’re looking for something entirely different yet very uniquely Chicago, try Chicago Pizza and Ovengrinder.

Available is: Gray, Dane DLR, Turner, Kazmir, Kluber

So do I lose McCarthy for DDLR or Gray? Not sure if I should stockpile closers or if a deeper league with QS makes Wood/Gray more valuable than streamers… Thanks.

homers are nice, but i liked it better back when goldy just had good at bats that often resulted in 2 hit days, and sometimes homers. He also got more rbi’s that way. The homer/walk/strikeout only thing i think is the fact that ARI is not good enough to beat LAD for playoff spot and he’s trying to win the game on every at bat. They need to fall out of playoffs entirely so Goldy can get back to just plain good at bats. This dude isn’t just a young, better adam dunn with steals.

    Had both going tonight.

Meanwhile, Jose Fernandez sits on my bench. Bonehead!

    All together now……………………………..

      (link)

@Gareth: you seem like a smart guy (who knows his options about fantasy), how exactly did you get into a damn weekly decisions league? Seems like the only people leagues like that benefit are those who are at risk to go into comas every couple of days or so.

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@goodfold2: or maybe those who’s work week takes them deep into caves or the woods, where they can only get near an internet connection a couple of times a week. Like magazines make hockey fans seem by the advertisements.

I missed the early stuff and was just getting caught up.I dropped Miller earlier when Dozier got hot, figuring I’d switch back later, bow everybody is going to be Yahooafied about him tomorrow.
I was going to ask the exact same question as Goodfold

Thanks for sparing me the angst.

@Grey: nor my wilson hold. however, it might have been good for you that beltran got real stupid and instead of sticking at 2b, decided to get caught in between 2nd and 3rd, ending the inning. Melancon could’ve ended up with a loss if that next batter would’ve hit.

        • Grey

          Grey says:

    Good idea or pass?

Arenado, Gyorko, Lambo on waiver wire
Prado have a trade offer from a manager, cost to get Prado is a 6th round draft pick
ARam, Trumbo, Sandoval are trade targets but unlikely to get them

  90. goodfold2 says:

is it time to grab Lo, at the very least to block my other league mates, thus keeping the value of my perkins and rivera set in stone?

  91. OaktownSteve says:

A’s hosed out of another walk off on replay. Three times ups have gotten it wrong with them on homers this year. Young hit a ball off the fair pole and they called it foul. Eff the effers.

Altuve is dropable if you’re holding him for steals. Can barely run.

    • goodfold2 says:
      (link)

@OaktownSteve: so Lo should have had a loss rather than a save, wow.

    • ty says:
      (link)

@OaktownSteve: whats your take on colon? I’m ready to free the manatee back into the sea

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@ty: i’m probably about to do that too in league’s lower than 14 team (it’s a 12). His next start isn’t a terrible matchup, but then again, today was supposed to be a great matchup. You must be in a league of less than 14 teams for nova to still be there.

        • ty says:
          (link)

@goodfold2: ya its actually an 11 team league and he’s sitting there with 2 starts on the docket for next week. I think we got what we needed from him and its time to move on

      • OaktownSteve says:
        (link)

        @ty:

Drop if you can. Deep leagues you gotta hold him but he looks cooked. Could get shut down. Anderson is coming back if you’re a deep league stasher. Add Gray in and the mix and match 7 starters.

    • HandOfGaudin says:

owners of scherzer or porcello or any other DET SP. For some reason fri’s start isn’t going to be from the normal suspects (fister/Por/max/ver/anabelle) thus moving scherzer to SUN, and porcello to tue. this gives porcello an extra start vs MIN and in the last week of the season @MIA and scherzer now gets 2 extra WSOX matchups. VERY NICE!

  93. Dani says:
    (link)

SON likes both Weaver and Nova tomorrow (facing each other in NY).

Both seem extremely risky to me there. Would you go with either one?

Also, what about Tillman pitching at Arizona? Like him?

    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
      (link)

@Dani: grey might not support this, but i’d be worried about all 3. go capuano at home, with hottest team in baseball, in pitchers park, vs Mess from Metco.
