Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

Hello, Razzball nation, welcome back for another fantasy baseball podcast where Nick and I talk about cruise ships.  If that doesn’t help you win your league, you may never.  I’m sorry, knowing which countries Nick used to visit when he was a cruise ship director is dire shizz.  Think of it this way:  do you go with Nick Franklin or Josh Rutledge?  Look at the Player Rater or the Hitter-Tron?  Or go by Nick’s tales of the high seas?  Think the answer is pretty obvious here.  I’m told there was fantasy baseball talk on the rest of the show, but first a stand-up comic and stylist to pro athletes, Robert Jodoin, joined Nick as the first ever in-studio guest.  They discussed what type of athletes want what type of clothes (surprise:  hockey players like flannel).  Also, Robert is officially available to Razzball Nation as a style consultant.  He’ll help pick out what blazer to wear with your sweatpants.  Then, Rudy and Nick discussed how the combination of Rudy’s tools are now affectionately being called “The Machine.” (I thought this was Andre the Giant in a mask, but Nick says, “Watch an episode of Person of Interest.”  I don’t know what that is, but I’m gonna assume it’s something you watch.  Context clues!)  And how The Machine likes Travis Snider and John Danks.  Who took The Machine to Tijuana and messed up its circuits with tequila?  Let’s just say, the Hitter-Tron is a bad influence.  Oh, and Nick sold the studio sponsorship to a divorce lawyer in Dallas.  In related news, I may get married in Dallas to save myself some legwork.  Anyway, here’s the Razzball Podcast (now with a fashion stylist — are we E?):

I asked you this a week ago but forgot something . My league keeps track of quality starts instead of wins. Do your 6 keepers still stay the same? And if you don’t mind could you give a short reasoning behind not keeping Harvey. Thanks in advance, your writeup is a great way to start the day

Players: Fielder, Kinsler, Machado, bautista, ellsbury, Heyward, Felix Hernandez, Harvey,

6 Keepers you picked: Fielder, Machado, Bautista, Ellsbury, Heyward, Felix

(I put this on the other page and saw your disclaimer)

Cause bats are better to keep, keepers stay the same as of now…

@Ziggy: bautista or ells gotta go for Harvey if you ask me, not just basing it on Today either…. ells is always a hammy pull away from missing the year and Bautista? IDK, harvey seems like the real deal…..

I know JUp has all the talent in the world, but he’s been terrible for about a month, and I can obviously weather the storm without him.

Fielder, JUp, and Jennings for Goldy, Ellsbury, and one of Kluber/Leake/Milone/Parker/Gee/Straily?

      • Pete says:
        (link)

@CramYourCatcherQuestionUpYourCramhole: Nah, I care about overall production. Joyce is most productive total points wise (let’s say 0.87 points/PA in my league) so I guess it comes down to how many PA’s Joyce will get relative to Arenado (figure 0.80 points/PA). What would you guess for their PA’s comparatively?

        • CramYourCatcherQuestionUpYourCramhole says:
          (link)

@Pete: Good on you to include Revere as an option then. I don’t do points leagues, so I wouldn’t know, but Arenado seems pretty schmohawky to me

Any advice for my team? Trade ideas, etc. 12 team 5×5 keeper. I’m currently in 2nd place, in basically a 2 team race, as the others have fallen off the pace. Just lost Tulo, which hurts. I’m hurting for steals, and could use some upgrades to my back end of my rotation to help boost wins/ERA/WHIP. Just traded for Bumgarner, which should help. I have some guys coming back from injury soon (Reyes, Utley).

    C – Lucroy
    1B – Ortiz
    2B – Kipnis
    3B – Machado
    SS – Rutledge
    MI – Rendon
    CI – C. Santana
OF – Holliday, Joyce, Revere, Aoki, Soriano
    Util – Dunn
DL – Tulo, Reyes, Utley, A. Cabrera, Teixeira

SP – Verlander, Scherzer, Bumgarner, Corbin, Medlen, Milone
RP – Rivera, Janssen, Balfour, Wilhelmsen

    Thanks!

Sweet new avatar Grey! Looks like your changing your look from a Burt Reynolds, “Cannon Ball Run” type of feel, to a martini sipping junk bond trader in Florida. Both our classy.

I got a 1st place team and just traded Tulo (As George Bush says “fool me once shame…shame on you. Fool me twice, I can’t get fooled again”) for some nice pieces that have solidified other positions. Problem is, now I have an extra hitter riding the pine (which I hate) that I could use for a streamer SP. Who do you cut/trade out of the following three players: Desmond Jennings, Brett Gardner, or Todd Frazier? Positions don’t matter, it’s for the UTIL.

    Snoochie Boochies

I am in a 8 team 12 cat (with OPS & QS) H2H league. my team is pretty stacked ( i think ) but now with Myers coming in i have one extra guy on my team and need advice on who you would start on a regular basis and if you think these players are “must start” no matter the matchup. my league tends to think their players are more valuable than they are so no one ever trades unless its a 3-1 or 4-1 trade. Who would be the odd one out?

    1b- Allen Craig
    2b- Kipnis

6/30/13 @ TB Odorizzi, Jake SP TB

@Mitch: 2 Excellent pitchers (a borderline Ace and a Number 3) for a guy coming off Tommy John who had a setback already and a guy coming back from the DL with a severely sprained ankle who’s main weapon is speed and plays on artificial turf.

I’m still not quite sold on picking up Porcello, and here is a quote from someone is Baseball that gives me even more pause:

“My rationale is that we’ve seen Porcello on hot streaks before, but he always returns to being the pitcher who gives up too many hits and allows too many of his baserunners to score. This streak is different from, for example, the six-game run Porcello had last midseason when he posted a 2.89 ERA, in that he is getting nearly a strikeout per inning, though he is doing it more by virtue of called strikes than swinging strikes. Porcello has been given credit for improving his performance by using his curveball more often, and over this recent stretch, he’s been throwing more strikes with the pitch.”

    Not exactly a glowing endorsement.

I just know that If I add him, he’ll get lit up. The Angels and Tampa bay (his upcoming two start Week) and pretty solid offenses (especially The Angels).

You guys lost a listener today. I enjoy some banter, but the reason I listen is for fantasy baseball discussion. That seems to be taking less time each week. This episode was my last straw. No doubt you can’t please everyone and if you’ve found a style that works for you, rock on. Today’s episode was a complete waste of time and it’s imo it’s becoming less about ffb and more about giggling for a good hour. I’m sure you’re having a lot of fun and have a lot of listeners, but this is one long time listener who is finally jumping ship.

@Prezz: Last I checked no one forces anyone to be here, we come here for lots of reasons and the podcast is really redundant if you read the site every day, maybe one or two pieces of useful info and the rest of the time it’s all shits and giggles. I would rather have it this way then some guy re-explaining his articles and common knowledge like other podcasts

    • Big Magoo says:
      (link)

@Dave: The majority of “regulars” on this site are above-average in terms of fantasy baseball knowledge, so they (we) come for the humor that keeps things fresh and fun. If you’re solely interested in the knowledge portion of fantasy baseball, there are a few other sites that are competent in that capacity, but none combine the info and wit that razzball does.

      • Jack Full of Hate says:
        (link)

@Big Magoo: please stress REGULARS in caps, there are about 90% of non regulars that ask questions that are answered if you read the site everyday

Trade Shields for Rizzo? My pitching staff is really thin right now (I only have 4 other sp’s, but could add someone like Gee), but my hitters are in worse shape, as Berkman and Aramis Ramirez have been worthless. This is how my SP’s and CI’s would look after the trade:

    Wainwright
    Scherzer
    Teheran
    Kluber

    1B: Rizzo
    3B: Beltre
    CI: Moreland
    UTIL: Aramis Ramirez
    Bn: Berkman
    Bn: Moss

I figure I could then drop Berkman or Aramis who have been worthless and pick up a 5th pitcher like Gee. Also the league counts QS instead of wins and also counts K/BB so it helps a guy like Shields.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

You can’t afford to take Rizzo there…

      • TRJFT says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

Hmm.. The thing is my team is this is how many points I have in each of the categories:

        Hitting: R: 2, HR: 7.5, RBI: 4, K: 11, SB: 2, OPS:9

        Pitching: K: 12, QS: 9, SV: 11, ERA: 9, WHIP: 10, K/BB: 12

I have 4 closers with high K-rates: Jansen, Chapman, Mujica, and Bell who keep my K numbers high (I don’t think anyone will catch me in K’s even if I lose Shields), and help with all the ratios so I figure the move would only hurt me in QS. And hitting I would stand to gain with R, RBI, HR, SB, and maybe OPS, which are the categories I need help in. I would do the move in a heartbeat if Kluber, Teheran, and Gee seem reliable, but I’m really not sure.

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

@TRJFT: They’re not reliable… But if Gee’s on waivers there must be other guys… If you’re hurting that bad for hitting as it looks, take Rizzo…

cody ransom, while not playing much is doing really well at homers and counting stats (esp K’s) when he does play. Worth a roster spot to fill in instead of Aybar when he actually does play?

Dillon Gee, Niese (lolol Mets’ pitchers), Jose Alvarez, Erasmo

    • Grey

      Gee

      • Spyre says:

        @Grey:

Thanks Grey! I actually drafted Gee late as a flier this year, but ended up dropping him after watching a couple April starts where he wasn’t playing well (picked up Mujica though)… I haven’t seen any of his games lately, but hopefully this is for real and he’s put it together.

      • Spyre says:
        (link)

@Grey: Shit he’s actually on waivers, cause someone streamed him for his Atlanta start. Is he worth a #4 waiver claim? Otherwise I gotta hope nobody else has his eye on him for the next couple days…

Prefer old pic. It commands respect! Proper dog. (Not sure what that means and I’m not wearing pants either. Just sayin’)

    • Jason says:

          • royce! says:
            (link)

@SteveNZ: I can’t remember what SON bases its projections on, but Blanton consistently has an ERA over his xFIP due to high LD rates and high HR/FB rates. You should leave him alone, except for in the RCL…

              • @SteveNZ: I went with Blanton last night as well. 11 Ks – woo-hoo!

            • SteveNZ says:

Cain, Garza, Porcello, Kluber, Wheeler, Parnell, K Jansen, Nathan, C Perez, Putz, just lost Cobb so I’m streaming two spots now (Vargas/Figaro)

A guy just picked up H. Santiago, but he wants Jansen for him. What do you think? I feel like Jansen should haul in more than that.

Wheeler pitched around a couple of lefties, which I don’t mind at all, and was a little wild early…otherwise I thought he looked pretty good…consistently at 96 mph…you think it was a solid first start?

    • Jack Full of Hate says:
      (link)

@Wake Up: didn’t see it, but getting a free swinging club on the back end of a double header makes you wonder. I will anticapte his next 3 or 4 starts

American football is still my least favorite american sport out of the big three. And I live where the footbal hall of fame is! I guess if the browns werent so abysmal I’d be curious and cheer for them.

For me, football is too stop start. Rugby flows more.

    Hey grey.

If today’s podcast was a ballgame:

    The canadian fashion guy:

    1 2/3 innings pitched. 8 runs allowed.

    Jb gilpin:

got the last out the second inning. Then pitched a scoreless third and fourth inning.

    Rudy gamble:

Was “rafael betancourt like” in his ability to slow down the game. Technically efficent but mind numbingly boring doing so. Gave up an unearned run in 3 innings.

    Grey albright:

A scoreless eighth inning, and with the opposing team leading 9 – 6, manager nick has a decision to make in the bottom of the 9th. Its the nl and the pitcher is due up to hit. Nick goes with his gut and decides to let grey swing away.

    Grand slam! Razzball wins!

Seriously grey, you rescued a rather mediocre podcast today.

Any thoughts on the next prospect to get the call. I snatched up Kyle gibson, and already landed zunino and franklin to my starting team. Im always looking for the next big thing. Was thinking about the 1b for houston in the minors coming off the suspension…chillenhall is out there. Most of the tier one prospects left have already been stashed in our league.

      @TheFarm: castellanous from Detroit?

@Grey: someone must have been reading your blog, castellanos is gone and someone picked up erasmo earlier this week. I wanted him too, had been eyeing him for the right to to pick him up and then bam…he was gone, any other thoughts?

@Grey: Where are my manners, I write snatch twice in one paragraph and my mind goes to jello!

Not taken from Scott Evans week 9 prospect power rankings; george springer, sonny gray and bauer. Picking are pretty slim. I would prefer a position player, but im not opposed to young arms. Looking forward to the next prospect power rankings, keep up the good work!

The guy in first place in my league has wheeler, harvey and picked up parker for his 2 start week. 3 wins today. Meanwhile im hoping the padres offense helps out cashner for the win.

Pitching in fantasy basebalk is not for the faint hearted.

    2nd night in a row ,
that mlb.tv package has been giving me problems .

last night i got staccato / “interrupted” service for hours …
up until freeman stepped into the batters box , in the 9th , to ruin
gee’s win ….. and then access never came back until the games were over .
    during this time , the mlb.com web-site never fully loads , and even , i believe ,
interferes with me accessing other web-sites (like Razz , cbs , etc )

    tonight ,
same thing ….. staccato transmission … but at least i got to see goldy’s walk-off
and the it shut off entirely .
i am not able to watch any of the remaining games ,
and the mlb,com site is presently in “loading mode” , such that i
can’t even refresh the page .

am hitting the “post comment” button , but an not sure that
this message will get through , without me shutting down my computer
and trying again …. without opening the mlb site .

    THIS SUCKS .

        @Grey:

        prolly a ponzi scheme .

need more people to sign up for the 49.95 half-season package
before they can offer full-time subscribers some sort of rebate .

last year , i received a “40 % off” coupon , good for my next mlb goods purchase
        (which i never made)
for complaining about their product’s performance .

        ironic thing is :
this is how reception was down in costa rica … with shitty internet connection and
power that flickered off and on during the night , causing multiple re-starts
and re-connections of my computer to the internet provider .
now that we’re back n the states and vacationing with the kids ,
i was looking forward to watching as many games as i could ,

don’t seem to have any trouble during the day games .
i think it happens when all of you left-coasters join in on the action .
either that , or it’s just shitty 2nd shift help .
like when you drive up to a dunkin donuts and PRAY
they got your wife’s order correct (med/ 4 and 4) so that
you don’t have to drive back around and deal with the shit-head that you already
tipped for screwing up the order the 1st time around .

I was itching to get mlb the show 12 a while back and it wasn’t out yet. So I rented that mlb 2k game to get my fix.

I put it on and was immediately confused. For a moment I thought I was playing an atari, not a ps3 game.

I realized then that this is how it must feel when a gm messes up I’m free agency.

Goldschmidt. Even his slumps are better than most.

Oh no! He’s been human for a week!

Goldy “I will now 2 hit home runs in 2 days. Because i can.”

The hitter tron doesn’t like him because gold doesn’t stick to it.

  160. gareth says:

    In theory:

    I could have:

    Felix
    Gio
    Lynn
    H. Bailey
    Gallardo
    G. Holland
    Parnell
    Frieri
    Street
    Betancourt / gregg

    Or

    Felix
    Gio
    Lynn
    Homer bailey
    Gallardo
    Cashner
    Jo-fer
    Porcello
    G. Holland

Its a quandry I’m having. Go with lots of relievers for counting stats and ratios or go with mostly starters and go for the wins and hope they do well mostly.

I could do both of these scenarios in my weekly league.

    What do you guys recommend?

  164. Jack Full of Hate says:

Ok SteveNZ and gareth, you can’t even compare rugby and football, they are two completely different games, it’s something people want to draw comparisons on but it’s impossible. I have watched both live and played football growing up, I even had a guy I played football in high school with who played Rugby in college inform me they are not really as close as people think. The thing they both have in common is they are very painful to play as a part of the game, the rest of the comparisons are surface things that really carry no weight in the execution of the game

    • SteveNZ says:
      (link)

@Jack Full of Hate: No one’s saying they’re close. I’m just saying I prefer one over the other.

      • Jack Full of Hate says:
        (link)

@SteveNZ: when people put those two in the same sentence it usually infers a preference in comparison to the others, but I am speaking from Americans and the few Brits I discussed it with when I lived there. You’re saying that you prefer it like you prefer baseball to lawn darts

looking back at the comments, my statement was more directed at Gareth, I think if people knew how difficult it is in those 10 seconds of all out intensity, then they would appreciate it more.

Whats the difference between Rugby and Australian Rules Football?

was offered trade in NL only 5×5 10 teamer- I lead in SBs, Avg , W —- the other owner leads in SVs, and HRs———- he wants one of Pence , e Cabrerra , or Revere ——— and offering Grilli and position player , he would also want a SP , which would be Pettibone —-and depend on which postion player i seek, may take pence or cabrerra for grilli and pos plyr (2 for 1)———————————which of the 3 do I sell high, and not regret ? and If I ask for D Brown as positon player to be in deal, am I asking too much? I need homers, he also has Uggla, (whom I had last year uggg), he also has Stanton (off limits i am sure) Fowler and Duda for position players that interest me……….I like your opinion, as i am partial to some players more than others, and dont want the “favortism” to bash me out of a good trade for my team .-thnx for your time -dp
