Don't be shellfish...Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterShare on Google+

I couldn’t be a part of the podcast today because I was getting fitted for wedding dresses in NYC this weekend.  I love reality based shows and thought “Why can’t I be part of Say Yes To The Dress?  Even if it was to tell a large girl, ‘Nuh-uh, baby doll, you aren’t working that, no way, Jose Canseco.'”  Also, my favorite musical song to sing to myself is I’m pretty, oh, so pretty.  Nature fit, right?  Nick decided that he should do a “freestyle” podcast because it’s too early to care about what players will do in 2014 and too late to help your stank ass team.  JayWrong and Nick got together to discuss some of their 2013 baseball predictions, but the show got side tracked because they both forgot to take their meds and they wound up discussing Jay’s fragile love life and how DC is full of emo-hipster chicks.  If Lisa Loeb is there, ring her up.   She’s desperate for companionship.  (BTW, Can you be both emo and hipster at the same time?  Isn’t that like being “country” and “backwoods” at the same time?  You’re goth and weird?  No, you are just weird.  I never got the goth thing.  Are you trying to make yourself less attractive?  Don’t reproduce.  It’s fine with me.)  Rudy and Nick discussed our RCL Expert and Champion Leagues.  Apparently all RCL Leagues have no caps on transactions simply to give me a fighting chance in the Expert League.  They then talked about how Rudy and I were doing in other experts leagues and Rudy started crying and playing emo-goth-hipster music.  He recovered in time to decree he’d never again draft “A player named Upton” no matter how good BJ, the 3rd becomes.  Anyway, here’s the Razzball podcast (now with JayWrong casually mentioning his availability even though we only have one girl listener; dude, try a singles bar):

    Grey,

Need some pitching suggestions for the week and beyond…

    1. Would you start Lackey tomorrow vs. Bal? (SON has it just north of $8, which isn’t terrible, but it’s still Baltimore)

    2. Are Ivan Nova and Ervin Santana worth hanging onto down the stretch, or should I just stream them if available and move on? Also, between the two, who would you rather own if not factoring in matchups?

    C.

    4. Start Ervin Santana @ Toronto on Friday? (SON gives it a meh $4.1)

    Thanks doode!

@jaywrong: Follow these simple steps on becoming a hipster:

              Don’t like anything.
Accuse other people of being hipsters. Hate them.
              Open an art gallery.
              Cry out for help. Ironically.
Most important. Always remind others that you are not a hipster!

    Anyways.

Question: Can any old shmuck (such as myself) play in a razzball league next year? Is there a list I need to be on or something? I would like to try my hand against some stiff competition. I would also like to try my hand against some stiff… Errrr. Nevermind. Ahem!

Yahoo pro leagues are meh. League my friends put together is double meh. ( I like taking their money but only half the guys are competitive). I’m mostly interested in H2H. Thanks Grey!!!

Keeper deadline coming up, so last time I’ll run this past you – can keep four, and definitely holding Carlos Gomez (18th round), Machado (20th round), Myers (21st round).
Remaining options are: Lucroy (19th round), Matt Carpenter (19th round), Addison Reed (15th round), or Iwakuma (15th round).
Who do you like as the best value for my 4th keeper?

Could also take a flier on Taveras, Sano, Olt, Taillon, etc. (most minor leaguers who aren’t anticipated 2013 call-ups are on the wire), if any of those look to be better bets?

This isn’t a question or anything but rather a declaration of love: WILL VENABLE.

If you bought in when he was 5 percent owned like I did you are head over heels for him. I already scratched his name next to mine on that big oak tree in the park and I got the affirmative on the note I slipped him in class that said “Do you like me yes or no. Circle one.”

No one even mentions his pops Max, who is a LEGEND. I have 5,000 of his worthless baseball cards.

      • Sixto Lezcano says:
        (link)

@jaywrong: I don’t get how it’s not overflowing already. I have De Aza too and he’s 76 percent owned in Y!. But Venable is only 56 percent owned and he almost has better numbers in 150 less ABs. I also like how the Daily Notes keep doubting him – “he’s mixed league worthy when he’s hot.” He’s been hot for the whole second half!!

I know he plays in the Puppy Pound but the fences have no impact on SBs, runs and hits. And if he does even 3/4’s of what he’s doing now he can take your team over the top.

        • Jay

          jaywrong says:
          (link)

@Sixto Lezcano: The Saturday notes have full confidence in him. I have continued to show Desmond Jennings numbers compared to Venable’s, and where they were drafted at the beginning of the year.

With Everth out, he is the de facto leadoff guy on that roster, and he’s showing something.

Fun news outta Pittsburgh where Marte gonna be out at least another 2 weeks +. Fugggggggg.

I’m gonna need to somewhat replace those runs, steals, and decent avg./ pop output for a few weeks…

6×6 (ops), 14 team, redraft — please rank these replacements (utility spot):

Jordan Schafer – my initial lean.
    Cody Asche –

Can you catch up? The end game is tricky. I find it helps to have realistic numbers so you know where to put your resources. It’s easy to do counters, but rates you can’t eyeball. I’ll run my team so you can get a sense of how much progress your team could make by the end of the year in your league. Ball park anyway.

I currently have a batting average of .2652. 1679 hits in 6331 ABs. I’ve been averaging 50 ABs a day. If I want to catch up, I have to optimistic, so lets say I can hit .280 every day. That’s 14 hits in 50 ABs. That’ll move me up .0001 per day. There are about 35 days left in the season. That means I could get possibly, reasonably to .2685 by season end. In my league that gives me a possible two point move, one of which is against my direct competition. But that’s best case hitting .280 ROS

For WHIP, I’m looking at every 10 innings every day on average RoS with the rest of my starts plus relievers. If I can average a whip of 1 for those 10 innings, I go down .001 per day. My current WHIP is 1.115 so in 35 days I can get to 1.089, which again could net me a point against my direct competition.

For ERA if I can pitch to a 2.70 ERA ROS (3 runs every 10 innings), I can get my ERA from 3.165 to 3.062 which gets me another point and again gets me in competition with the team I’m trying to beat.

I take kind of best case scenario numbers and then I work my way back. If you fire the numbers in a spreadsheet you can make a few real quick what if scenarios with different RoS performance levels. Thanks as usual to the great Vin, who provides the raw data here:

        @Grey:

I was looking at the RCL standings and I was trying to guess if I could make up ground but I was like, how much can I really gain in the last month. So I ran me some numbers. Vin is really good with providing data. Even a math dummy like me can do some stuff.

          Grey says:
          (link)

Yeah, agreed… Vin does a terrific job with that… Gotta be careful about with focusing on one stat and not others… I went for steals big time and now am catchable in homers where I wasn’t before…

@Grey: Yeah, when I was trying to catch the leader in steals (who quit playing in early June) Oaktown Steve passed me in RBI and Oh Jessica Marie passed me in Average. (and I didn’t gain on the steals leader).

@OaktownSteve: In the last 35 days, 79 teams have recorded an ERA of 2.70 or better, 18 with at least 300 IP.

4 teams had a WHIP of 1 or better; 261 IP the highest total.

109 teams hit .280; 5 of them had at least 1600 ABs.

WTF Yahoo? Azzwipes changed the players pages to some slow, cryptic crap and also now all my cool Greasemonkey scripts are broken. This is like the 2nd time in the last 5 years they’ve screwed things up right at playoff/stretch run time by putting their lame ass efforts into the hopeless task of making FFB better.

Don’t they understand that football sucks?

@Grey: yeah it seemed to happen late last night, but mine actually loads faster, and the overall stats are better as well. I have no idea what a “Greasemonkey script” is, but if it’s something that monkey from Fear and Loathing wrote to get a job it sounds cool, and put it back together quick, since those monkeys are strong and can get violent when angered.

          @Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow:

I had to use task manager to close Firefox because it froze on me,plus you can’t scroll.Plus there’s no batter vs pitcher matchups on the players page and no SB totals.

That’s just what I’ve noticed in the last hour since I put my main computer back together after it blew up yesterday during a power outage(not the Upton kind).

heads up to miller owners/prospectors: if miller does well today (against holland, an above average lefty) it will be the third game in a row he will have done well against lefties, and maybe he’s made some type of adjustment that Hitter T hasn’t picked up about him yet. Obv 3 games is small sample size and I am benching him for aybar (playing against the pretty terrible fausto carmona incognito) today.

      @goodfold2:

Yep.I kept Jeter in a DL spot because I thought Miller would do OK vs the slew ‘o lefties this week, but itlooks like I might have to move Miller to 2B if Cano is gonna be out.

  31. goodfold2 says:
    (link)

sweet jesus i’m playing this week against a team that has 3 DL’ed people starting in 16 team land. (this is a near $200 buy in league too). Kendrick/Mauer/Bautista. and 2 other guys sitting out today in mclousy/carp. He only has about 4 starts this week too but they are good pitchers (wood/masterson/fister); truly the only categories i could lose at all are saves/era/whip/avg/losses. That’s actually a lot of cats and i’d be sad to go 8-5 against this sad sack. If i can just get like 2 or 3 pitcher wins i can bench all starters. He does have kenley/nathan so he could easily win saves though.

Not that there’s anything wrong with hitting a Yankee, just not my 1st round pick.I mean every pitcher in the league could hit A-Rod every at bat and I’d be cool with it.

check this blurb about soriano. these guys are pretty on the ball, huh.”The longballs were Soriano’s 399th and 400th of his career. In 30 games for the Yankees this season, Soriano is already tied for the team lead for right-handed batters with 11 dingers. He’s now gone deep 30 times this season, giving him a good shot at a second straight 30-homer campaign.”

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Grey: that’s why the 2nd part of that last sentence actually makes sense. Otherwise it certainly is likely to get to 30 when you already have 30. That was their typo.
        1. burton replacement ( i seriously didn’t like his recent numbers anyway, was “this” close “—” to replacing before this game. So he ruined Wood’s gem (not whip gem though). At least i benched Latos. pick one. Herrera/Siegrist/Belisario/belisle/jones/lindstrom/parra/collins/hoover (likely not,as i threw him away yesterday)

OH SHIT! I asked yesterday about whether or not Milone would lose his roster spot now that Colon’s back. nope, it’s GD Gray losing his according to schedule’s i’m reading. these people are str nuts. dude plays out of his mind, then has a bad start vs good team and it’s back to bullpen for that fat tub of lard who’s just terrible? WTF! Gotta find replacement in 5/6 of leagues for Gray.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

      I don’t see where you’re seeing he’s out of the rotation…

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Grey: ok i had checked on espn first. they have it listed from today (milone) through Mon as if it’s Milone/Straily/Colon/Parker/Griffin and then back to Milone. But MLB.com has it (a more likely) undetermined after Colon’s Thurs start. So it’s really more likely Milone (today) and Straily tomorrow are playing for last spot. Which is fine with me since milone was good after first inning and not terrible overall, considering who he was playing against.

          Grey says:

                  (link)

@Hondo: due to such things as what you mentioned below and the fact that yahoo will leave the ^ next to people who never started a game or the X next to those who did (this is through the whole game) i completely stopped trusting any future claims they would make. Usually espn is the same as mlb.com, with less skepticism. It’s risky enough to trust yahoo 5 minutes before a game; probably been f’ed by that kind of thing at least 8 times over season.

                  • Hondo says:
                    (link)

@Aubrey Plaza’s Pillow: I don’t use them to set my roster unless I’m running late.I’ve got about a dozen sites bookmarked,3 or 4 are weather though. One click and they all pop open.
I did like their matchup ratings(seems like only yesterday LOL) and I had a script that linked me from Yahoo to Fangraphs hitter vs pitcher history, but that’s now borked by the forkers.

                    • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
                      (link)

@Hondo: sometimes yahoo’s little player info box will show matchups that are from the previous day, even though it’s like 20 minutes till that current day’s game. The page Rudy added for lineups is solid and is very early relative to the game times.

                    • I don’t use Yahoo’s ^ either. I use BaseballPress (the page we link to) as it’s usually 30 minutes ahead of ESPN. If I’m anxious (say a lineup for a west coast game and it’s near start time for East Coast games, I do a twitter search like ‘padres lineup’.

my super sneaky idea to pickup roark in 16 teamer went array due to another blurb mentioning him getting ohlendork’s job soon. His ROS schedule could be something like vsNYM,@MIA,@NYM,vsATL,vsMIA,@ARI. Pretty sweet. if milone and erasmo hadn’t been so good lately i would’ve had him already; thought i had more time. Gotta hope Milone keeps spot as his ROS schedule is pretty good too.

@goodfold2: somehow, even though this owner also has locke he dropped kazmir to get roark, who has this ROS schedule (starting on the 7th) vsNYM,@WSOX,@KC,vsHOU,@MIN. This actually could be a better schedule than roark’s.
