So, there’s this thing called conference call, and… We used it!  You = mind blown.  That’s right all of you out in Razzball nation, Rudy and I are now on the podcast together.  At one time.  From different locations.  Thank you, technology, now if I could only record one program while watching another one.  You can.  Hardy har, Random Italicized Voice, like I’m gonna fall for that one.  Whatevs.  We’re also joined by Razzball’s resident heartthrob, Tehol.  He’s one part man, one part warlock, one part sass, two parts frass, three parts John Cena’s “You can’t see me” hand gesture thing, one part… How many parts is that?  Eight?  That’s it for Tehol.  Today’s podcast is all about predictions for 2013 fantasy baseball.  We go over who we think is gonna be the fantasy Cy Young, MVP, Rookie of the Year and Bust.  Of course, I mention Giancarlo and Josh Rutledge five times in the first 12 seconds.  That’s including six weird um’s, so it’s quite a feat.  I just had a great idea!  We should get Lazaro, the stuttering American Idol contestant, on the podcast to make all of us sound better.  It’s addition by subtraction.  By the by, this is the worst season of American Idol, and I’ve only watched it twice before.  When Mariah is the most well-spoken judge, y’all need a makeover!  Finally, Jonah Keri, Grantland baseball writer, took time from writing his book on the Expos and was on the podcast.  Go buy his previous book, which was a NY Times bestseller.  It’s about the Tampa Bay Rays.  If you’ve bought the book previously, buy it again and give it as a gift.  Mother’s Day is right around the corner!  Anyway, here’s the Razzball Podcast (now with conference call):

@grey—my son will be 13 in August. I’m leaning toward co-managing a team with him and then let him have at it alone next year. Thoughts? Thanks.

        (link)

@fri-guy: if it’s a league with friends and family, I’d be all for it. Some of the public leagues have a bunch of a**holes that will talk smack and send some pretty rude/unnecessary messages that he may get. So it depends on the level of vulgarity that you actually want your 13 year old to see. I don’t see an issue with it otherwise. It gets him in to some friendly competition and to get even more engrossed in a great sport.

@Grey: Starting my 6-yr old grandson. He picked a fair looking team–1 player each from 25 teams–took some time. He logs on pc, goes to mlb scoreboard and sees Samardzija starting. “Papa, I have him!”
            “What?”
“Yeah, look at my team.” Sure enough.
I suggest to change out a player. “What spot?”
            “Round 5″.
            “No, I’ve got Dickey there.”
            “What?” Sure enough.

Nice, looking forward to listening to the podcast on my way to work tomorrow morning. It’ll be the highlight of my day…unless the Direct TV Genie (Hannah Davis) makes an appearance. Which is highly unlikely considering the pending restraining order…

So Grey, I took your advice and grabbed some SPs in my 12 team keeper league in rounds 7, 8 and 9 (first 6 rounds are keepers). I also got Rutledge! Just wondering if you think it’s worth it for me to hold onto Dee Gordon for a while. My team is average on speed. I actually just traded Big Papi for Aoki to help with my speed concerns. Any concerns you would have with this team?

    1. (6) Ian Kinsler – keeper
    2. (19) Andrew McCutchen – keeper
    3. (30) Giancarlo Stanton – keeper
    4. (43) Evan Longoria – keeper
    5. (54) Justin Upton – keeper
    6. (67) Eric Hosmer – keeper
    7. (78) Max Scherzer
    8. (90) Jordan Zimmermann
    9. (102) Jeff Samardzija
    10. (115) Josh Rutledge
    11. (126) Sergio Romo
    12. (139) Tom Wilhelmsen
    13. (150) David Ortiz – traded for Aoki
    14. (163) Jonathon Niese
    15. (174) Jesus Montero
    16. (187) Jose Veras – traded for Gregerson. High whip closers are not good for my blood pressure, per doctor recommendations I traded him.
    17. (198) Kendrys Morales
    18. (211) Zack Cozart
    19. (222) Sergio Santos
    20. (235) A.J. Griffin
    21. (246) Drew Storen
    22. (259) Jason Hammel
    23. (270) Santiago Casilla
    24. (283) Chris Carter
    25. (294) Dee Gordon

Just a note, we have a 1250 IP max, so I have to be careful with my starters. I will be abusing the Stream-O-Nator!

        Felix Doubront
        Bud Norris
        Vance Worley

@Grey: Yeah I agree. Thanks again for the reply. I get antsy right after my draft and before the season starts. I like to tinker…and it usually does more damage than good. Case in point, I dropped Altuve and Rizzo before the season even started last year.

I should probably hire someone to punch me in the face any time I try and make a move in my league before mid-May.

At what point in the draft do you reach for Starting Pitching if SP is being way over drafted in a head to head POINTS league? It’s a points league so I don’t have to worry about losing pitching Categories. Typical points league scoring but with a 2 pt bonus for GIDP. Also, limited transactions so streaming is not an option. I’m ok with taking taking the best available hitters for the first four rounds in this scenario. But when do you address SP in this scenario?
    Thanks-

      Grey says:
      (link)

      I’d go with the flow of the draft… I’d still want a #1, 2, 3, etc…

  8. Could you please share your thoughts on the following small 10 Team H2H squad drafted with your recommendations in mind. As encouraged, I retained Bumgarner as a 7th Rounder over Kershaw as 2nd Rndr; and despite considerable chastising from leaguemates, in this 10 Teamer, I loaded up on bats early & think my rotation turned out just fine. The League limits in-season moves, so Pitching is at a bit of a premium.

    C Salvador Perez (18), 1B Paul Goldschmidt (K) 2B Dan Uggla (26), 3B Evan Longoria (K), SS Josh Rutledge, (13), 2B/SS Danny Espinosa (14), 1B/3B Ryan Howard (11)
OF Matt Kemp (K), Justin Upton (K), Shin-Soo Choo (4), Desmond Jennings (5), Dayan Viciedo (21), UTIL Adam Eaton (23).
P Madison Bumgarner (K), Adam Wainwright (6), Brandon Morrow (8), Homer Bailey (12), Mike Minor (17), Andrew Cashner (19), Matt Garza, (20), Hyun-Jin Ryu (22), Chris Tillman (24) – C L Aroldis Chapman (9), Tom Wilhelmsen (15), Glen Perkins, (16), Bruce Rondon (FA)

Poised to place Garza & Eaton on the DL (hate waiting for those two letters to show up), and with possible AVG concerns, available bats and ams (need one each) are as follows: Moustakis, Machado, Gyorko, Cain, Marte and Boggs, AlAl, Robertson, Norris, Detwiler.
Thanks so much for your annual draft assistance, any further roster recommendations beyond the 2 replacement players, and advice going forward!

    Arencibia or Lucroy?

Should I trade Pujols, Trumbo, and Kimbrel for Harper in my keeper league?

    C – Arencibia/Lucroy
    1b – Ryan Howard
    2b – Kyle Seager
    SS – Ian Desmond
    3b – Evan Longoria
    OF – Mike Trout

    OF – Bryce Harper
    Util – Ike Davis
    Bn – Domonic Brown
    Bn – Yasiel Puig

        @Grey:

I was leaning the other way on both of your answers. I think Howard and Davis should be able to replace the production from Pujols and Trumbo just fine and I don’t trust flame-throwing closers to stay healthy for long.

I feel like in two years that trade would look like a no-brainer in my favor and having Trout, Stanton, and Harper in the same OF would be incredible. Harper has 9 straight hits right now, up to .476 this spring. Just my thoughts.

I plan to load up on offense early, preferably with balanced players, leave the first 10 rounds with 2 SPs, and employ 4-5 SPs. Ive totally punted saves in the past and just rostered 6 SPs. But I’m thinking getting a couple relievers will be better. I would like your input on the best way to approach this league. 60 move limit also. Thanks in advance!

When does it start already?! I’d go even heavier on hitting than usual… I’d grab 2 top SPs in the first ten rounds like you said… I think you’d be fine with one, maybe two closers at most… 6 SPs sounds like the way to go…

OK, so I’m in a Yahoo! H2H, 16-team mixed, 6×6 (R, OPS) league with a 9-hitter lineup and a 5-player bench. I overbought on OFers because they were so cheap. I’ve been offered Pedroia for my J-Up. My relevant players:

    2b: Altuve
    SS: Asdrubal
    OF1: J-Up
    OF2: Holliday
    OF3: Choo
    Ut: Beltran
Bench: D. Espinosa (qualifies at 2B and SS)
    Bench: Cuddyer
    Bench: Ethier
    Bench: Revere

If I make the trade, Altuve gets benched for Pedroia and anyone of the 3 benchie OFers starts instead of J-Up, depending on the matchup. Should I make the deal?

I have to select my 4 keepers shortly, and am wondering what to do. The cost to keep a player goes up every year that you keep them, so the first year is last year’s value +$3 , 2nd year is prior year’s value + $4, 3rd year is prior year value +$5, etc…

$260 budget, 10 team with deeper rosters incl CI,MI,4 of, 2Ut. I try to stay around $180/$80 split. Can keep up to 4 players. I am keeping Harper $7, AdJones $15, Posey $10 for sure.
    - Total cost =$32. Next year’s cost if kept – Harper $11, Jones $19, Posey $14. (Total $44).

I could also keep one of:
    Braun $49 or Kipnis $5.

I’m thinking I should keep kipnis at $5 over Braun at $49. My reasoning:
    - It is going to be tough to fill 2b with a similar upside talent for less than $5 (2b is weak, but lots of crappy guys cost a lot more than $5, kipnis would def go for $10+ this year)
    - I’m already keeping 2 outfielders, and there are several good outfielders going back into the pool (Kemp, Juptin, Hamilton, Bruce).
    - Putting Braun in there might allow me to get kemp or juptin at a discount, or i can bid on Braun if i want. (kipnis would likely be priced out of my range)
    - Braun gets popped for 50 games, ~40% of my budget for hitters is wasted.
    - I tend to have strong drafts and am the defending champ (5 out of 7 years).
    - This would be the last year I kept braun anyway, as he is already relatively cost prohibitive.

So to make a short question long, should I keep Braun at $49 or Kipnis at $5?

  37. Doh! I originally filed this to the wrong spot:

Hi Grey and Rudy — First question in the blog this year! Thanks for all the past help, and apologies for starting out with a complex question like this.

Here’s my roster in a 14-team 6×6 (holds) roto league (9 starting hitters incl. UTIL, 1350-inning cap). Three and a half questions to follow the roster …

    C Victor Martinez
    1B Adrian Gonzales, Kendrys Morales
    2B/OF Emilio Bonifacio
    2B/SS Josh Rutledge
    SS Zach Cozart
    3B Miguel Cabrera
    3B/SS Eduardo Nuñez
OF Adam Jones, Shin-Soo Choo, Carlos Beltran, Hunter Pence, Torii Hunter, Lorenzo Cain, Cameron Maybin
SP Max Scherzer, Kris Medlen, Jonathon Niese, Tommy Milone, Andrew Cashner
RP Joe Nathan, Greg Holland, Luke Gregerson, Al Alburquerque

I think I’ve got too many OF, too little speed, and am probably an SP short given the innings cap.

1: There are a lot of borderline pitchers available: Tommy Hanson, AJ Griffin, Detwiler, Dillon Gee, Mike Fiers, Capuano, Billingsly, Buehrle, and Lohse. Do I pick one up? And who do I drop? Maybin seems like the best drop, but I probably need his speed.

2: Peter Bourjos and Krispie Young are on waivers. If I drop two players, are either of them an upgrade?

3: While making the changes I can fill my two DL slots: who’d you suggest between Beachy, Luebke, and A-Rod?

3.5: Any general observations or advice?

Thanks a million, gentlemen, as always.

Team looks pretty stacked… Maybe a tad light on speed, depends on Gardner… Pitching looks nice… Solid team…

Is Edwin Jackson a guy who’s a lot more valuable in real life than in fantasy? Do you see any chance of upside from him?

Thinking about him or Ryu or Doubront as a fill-in starter if Tillman starts the year on the DL…

Grey, mulling over my draft for tomorrow night and could use a little more guidance than usual since the settings are RP heavy.

Cats are Ws, ERA, WHIP, SVs, HLDs, K/9. w/ a minimum IP of 15. We start 2 SPs, 2 RPs, 4Ps and have 4 bench slots. I’m thinking 1 good pitcher with Greinke being the first I’d consider in the 4th/5th round or if I miss on him, Bum/Scherzer/Gio. After that, I’m trying to decide how to break down the numbers on the rest of the staff. Would 3 starters be enough? If so, would you go with someone like Niese as the #2 and then pick up a guy late like Milone? Or should I go with 3 that are on Niese’s tier or above? Beyond that, how many closers and MRs would you guys suggest drafting? I was thinking 4 closers and 3 or 4 MRs. Would you go with a 12 dollar salad like Chapman to anchor or just wait and load up on guys in the next tier? Also, I noticed earlier in the comments to the last thread Rudy thinks Kenley Jansen is the top MR. Any other guys I should target specfically? I found the post from one of the other contributors who ranked the MRs, he has Pestano, Robertson, Joel Peralta, Jake McGee, O’Flaherty, Mike Adams, David Hernandez, Clippard, Kenley Jansen and Frieri as his top group.

Thanks in advance. A little lost on this one since its a vastly different strategy from my other leagues.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

3 starters, 1 MR, 1 RP… Greinke-ish, Niese-ish and a flyer should be fine… Rudy’s top group makes sense… Tim Collins and Al Al are also beasts in K/9…

      • letsgobravos says:
        (link)

        @Grey:

So you’re saying only take 1 closer and 1 MR? Maybe I’m missing something, but wouldn’t that be counterproductive since my strategy hinges upon winning SVs and HLDs?

        • Grey

          Grey says:
          (link)

Sorry, typo… 3 starters, 3 MRs, 2 closers… Greinke-ish, Niese-ish and a flyer should be fine… Rudy’s top group makes sense… Tim Collins and Al Al are also beasts in K/9… Aroldis could work… But I’m saying 3 MRs because they’re cheaper and could win you more categories than just closers…

          • letsgobravos says:
            (link)

@Grey: Ah, gotcha. Figured that had to be a typo and that makes sense. That still leaves me with 4 bench slots, so you would fill those with upside hitters as opposed to an additional MR or CL? I was thinking I’d shoot for having just Frazier and Ruttledge (or another multi position upside/specialist guy like Bonifacio) as my bench hitters and that would leave me room to carry 10 pitchers total.

              Grey says:

Cool, then go with an extra MR and another closer if you can get one cheap enough…

You are probably think i dont have enough pitching…. but i believe i have 4 solid starters well 3 for sure and 3 good closers so im not too worried about pitching…. if this years medlens comes along on waivers ill definately pick up a starter or two only if i believe they will stick on my team for the majority of the season…. Ortiz opening on DL this season and Headley but I have more than enough capable guys to fill in until they return – This team to me is just ridic good…. Thoughts ??

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

The pitching you have is very solid, you just don’t have enough of it… Once you DL guys you should pick up some arms… Your team does look solid though, nice hitting… Solid pitching, just not that much of it…

  44. Elwood Blues says:

NL Only 12 team 4×4 Keeper.. right now I have Gio $17, Medlen $1 protected heading into the auction. I have D. Hernandez at $3, do I keep him or trade him for Lynn, also $3.
I don’t have a closer, and looks like I will have to bid either Chapman, Soriano, Papelbon, Marmol, Motte.. or stick with D.H. and load up on #2 guys.

    • Grey

      Grey says:

      Go with Lynn…

  45. Rags says:
    (link)

Keepers have been kept but I’m allowed to drop injured players before the draft. It’s 11 team, NL only, so all but two closers (not counting Boggs) have been kept already (Fujikawa is also available), and bidding will be high on them.

I have Kimbrel, Parnell, and Motte @ 8. Keep Motte @ 8 and hope for the best? Or use that 8 dollars elsewhere. There’s been no news, no definite time table for return, and StL has options that could be successful in his absence. Draft is Friday, so I have a couple days to decide, but it will probably be a couple weeks into the season before they test the elbow again and give us more news.

@Rags: Yeah, as my fortune cookie said last week: $8 is a little much to spend on chicken feet or CL elbows…

Machado or Kendrys? I got the former in a late round and am tantalized by the upside, but Kendrys, assuming they let him run the bases in a padded bubble…

Hey Razzball Writers! haha I just recently did a draft in a 12 team H2H 5×5 competitive league and I was wondering if I could get a look at it.

    1B) Paul Goldschmidt
    2B) Ian Kinsler
    3B) Miguel Cabrera
SS) Hanley Ramirez (But still deciding haha)
    OF) Adam Jones

    P: Tillman
    Bench: Al Alburqueque

    Bench: Ryan Madson

After I put Hanley on DL, I need to decide between…
    Scutaro or Cozart

I asked u the other day about V-mart & Lincecum for Ellsbury & Shelbyville, if it was fair. I thought it was, apparently I insulted him cause he countered with Ellsbury & hellboy for Wilhelmsen & Kipnes & DARVISH! Now that’s insulting. He says Ellsbury in a contract year is worth it. Whatevs, guess he will keep Ellsbury for the rest of his prime. Didn’t even have the decency to offer me the player he has to drop to make the deal go down
