It’s officially the mid-way point of the season (you know, 81 game mark in 162 game season) and with the long weekend coming up, Nick got lazy with this week’s installment, rather, more lazy.  A podcast on a Wednesday?  What is this France?  Any the hoo!  Nick had JB and JayWrong on at the same time to battle it out in a match of “Guess who’s projections these are.”  JayWrong wiped the floor with JB; JB said it was because he was hungry.  I heard the fight between JB and JayWrong gets completely out of control, but I wouldn’t know because I’m on by myself.  Why do I feel like the special needs kid that is tutored separately from all of his friends and is told, “Grey, you need special attention, because you’re creative in ways the other kids aren’t.”  I used the name Grey there, but I’ve never actually heard that line said to me.  I’m not special at all.  Quite ordinary.  Singing John Legend, “We’re just ordinary PEOPLE!”  Man, I love that song.  Rudy comes on the ‘cast and talks about similar halfway mark stats jazz, then I talk about everyone’s favorite player that they own or least favorite player that they don’t own, Chris Davis.  Then I drop on you a surprising buy for the 2nd half.  A guy you haven’t heard me say I like in the last 24 months or so.  I also drop into your eardrums my biggest sell for the 2nd half.  It’s a doozy or my name isn’t Cousin Brucie.   Finally, Rhino Energy wanted to help Razzballers party like animals all weekend so they’re giving away a case of Rhino Energy drinks to the person who comments first with the trivia answer to:  What European country, and home of Rhino Energy, is known for its fall festival where ample-bosomed waitresses serve you steins of beer?  Anyway, here’s the Razzball Podcast (now with JayWrong and JB applying oil to their arms and legs so they can grapple):

I’ll answer your questions with an answer to none of your questions: So far in 2013 Pujols’ “avg true distance” is 411.6 feet (#9). In 2012 (full season) it was 401.5 feet (#53).

Traded Matt Joyce for Homer bailey after Joyce’s hot month of May/early June. Feelin pretty good right now. Baileys gone 7 innings or more in 6 of his last 10 starts, with only 1 of those stars being less then 6 innings, with 2 complete games. Not to mention his K/9 is pretty solid also. He’s pretty underrated but maybe not after this last start. BUY BuY BUY if you can!!!

@CramYourCatcherQuestionUpYourCramhole: Well my outfield is the sexiest outfield possibly ever assembled, so makes up for the lack of infield. and Tulo/Everth are pretty beastly when healthy, so i feel like my outfield can carry my offense and rest of team is “Solid”…Grey your thoughts please?

@Hotrod: Yeah NOW it looks like that, but Harper and Stanton both missed a month and Puig’s only had 100 AB’s, and in their stead, Cespedes has batted a cool .225. I mean, does not compute, but good on you.

In what rounds do you see the following players being drafted in a 10 team H2H points league that favors pitching? In our league we keep 5 players, so the first round of picks is really round 6. I would be giving up these players now and am wondering what you think is a good draft pick (round) for each player in our 2014 draft.

Was offered an 8th (13th) round pick for Miller, but negotiated a 3rd round pick (really the 8th round) since he has RP eligibility and he is the only SP on our league’s market.

I asked for a 3rd (8th) round pick for Myers, but the other guy only wants to give up a 6th (11th) round. I don’t think I’ll be giving in.

Was offered a 6th (11th) round pick for Kipnis, but think I will ask for 4th (9th) rounder.

Currently available are Alcides, Alexei, Andrelton, Brad Miller, Cozart and Jhonny P. – in a keeper league, would you drop Bogaerts and hold Rutledge for a potential repeat of last season’s second half, or drop Rutledge and hold Bogaerts for a possible callup this year and keep for next year? Offense rocking but pitching majorly letting me down. Should I consider trading Davis to get back in the race? Offer:

Scherzer and Shields for C Davis.

The other dilemma is that Davis would be a great keeper for years with his cheap contract and is the only keepable player of the bunch. So I would be losing a great keeper to go for it this year. Other starters:

YoGa (just dumped), Fister, Leake, Peavy, Hamels, Price, Latos.Gio.

Good one. I’ve said it before, but I’m seriously glad to have found this website this season. Btw, if Coug’s really wants to go to Sacramento, you got it made Grey. Expectations are low. She’ll consider a trip to Ensenada like a trip to the Bahama’s!

    2 questions.
    1) Anderson, Morrow, McAllister worth a DL stache? McCarthy available, too, but he seems to be having all sorts of issues.
    2) This is sort of a newbie question, so anyone please set me straight. In H2H, is it worth using a spot for a reliever for ratio & mild K help (Cecil, Smyly, Hunter available. )? Or do the ~3 innings per week really not make much of an impact? League note, I’m only allowed 2 RP’s active at a time, so the SP/RP eligible guys above can give me a 3rd active RP.

    Thanks as always!

I’m not sure if anybody commented on it this morning but that was one of your better headlines. Managed to work in an “Old Bailey” court reference and add a dash of sittin’ on the dock of the bay. Nicely spun.

Made up for your punt on the Donaldsonnet. I wrote a proper one:

Told you not to sleep on ol’ Donald’s son.
But you weren’t convinced; were a real naysayer.
I said “he’ll hit for power, might even run.”
You stood your ground, “He’s not a mixed league player!”

Commenters chimed in. “Is he worth a flier?
He’s tearing it up. Third base is a wasteland.”
And still you held fast, said “I’m not a buyer.”
You stood aside while we rode the hot hand.

Evidence mounted, his samples got size.
Still you dug in, but feeling a bit vulnerable.
Until one day, slightly sheepish, you did advise:
“Ok everybody, son of Donald is ownable.”

I know it hurts; he’s your crawlspace possum,
But you have to admit that he’s been pretty awesome.

After such a ringing endorsement for Kemp on the podcast you still seem relatively low on him in print…are you basically saying you would try to buy low but hold him as a top 15 bat if you owned him?

I’m confused because you said Kemp/Shields wasn’t enough for Votto/Balfour in the forums, but if Kemp is a possible top 5 bat the rest of the way it seems that should be more than enough, right?

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

I’d buy low on him, but I’m not buying for what I think he can do, I’m buying on what the other guy has been dealing with with his garbage… Votto is a top bat, I’m not giving a top bat for a different potential one…

      • Deck says:
        (link)

@Grey: Not gonna try to pull you into a big debate but the difference between Shields and a closer is pretty large though. Basically I made the offer because he has Craig in the OF and can move him to first base and try to fix his league worst era and whip, but if Kemp is about to turn the corner I might just want to keep my Kemp and Shields.

Grey, I hope you enjoy the holiday; it’s one of my favorites.

i’m in first in my 12 team, H2H 4 keeper points league, yet lost 2 this past week and fear another 2 game loss this week. Please take a peek at my roster and give me your opinion on weakness and or/ who I should lose. I feel my arms are solid, and my bats have gone limp. Martin was a recent add, dropping Zunino, btw. Zunino has showed me nothing in the early going.

    • Grey

      Grey says:
      (link)

Not going to play every day as the DH, and he hasn’t hit in the majors in 15 months so I’d lose Zunino for him but wouldn’t expect much…

mercer just got moved up in order, that may make him useful. avila’s back from injury, i read somewhere that he thinks he “fixed” his swing while rehabbing. He’s now got a double and a homer in the 2 days since being back. Is he better yet than Grandal/Zunino/Ruiz or is Grandal still the man there?

    • Grey

      Better than Grandal, sure

      • Aubrey Plaza's Pillow says:
        (link)

@Grey: i still have zunino but a couple days back you said grandal was best of those 3, at least for short term, i just didn’t drop zunino yet due to pickup limit watching. At that point Avila wasn’t yet on radar. avila now has 2 hits today as well.

Porcello has career best Siera of 3.22 xFIP 3.32 and FIP of 3.26 and yet a career worse ERA of 5.34. Iis this an indication of good things to come or a bad defense? I know he’s always pitched worse than his peripherals, but how can he be this much worse? I know he will get some wins. Against what looks to be an easy schedule ROS is it realistic to expect 3.80/1.29 and 6.6K/9 ROS.?

  85. Alex says:
    (link)

I only get to keep 2 of Bryce/Felix/Cano.

I figure Cano is obvious, and I think it makes more sense to keep Bryce than Felix…but if that’s the case, I don’t have much pitching for next season.

Keeping Cano, Bryce, Machado (17th), Goldschmid (5th), Ecab (20th), then one of Medlen (4th), Teheran (24th), Bucholz (22nd), or I guess Beltran (9th).

Don’t want to give up too many high picks because I know that Cutch/Fielder/Verlander/a few other high picks will have to go back into the draft next year due to keeper restrictions.

I’m thinking keep Bucholz if he comes back and pitches lights out, otherwise it would be Teheran.

    • Grey

Cano, Bryce… You can find pitching next year like you found Teheran and Buchholz…

That said, you are a good man, taking one for the team, working while there are games on, while the Commenters get to ask “which catcher” questions on the IPad sitting next to the pool. Anyway, I hope you have fun in Vegas at the ASB. I watched The Hangover the other night with my 89 year-old father in law. I told him we’re hitting Vegas for his 90th, Gangham Style. Based on his response,I think there’s a better chance we’ll end up in SacTown.

Trophy Tony here, not making as many posts as I use to, man having a kid really kills my frivilous fantasy reading time….still ballin’ like a mad man just not as much BS time….

Anyways, what do you think of this deal I just proposed and was accepted after much back and fro…..

12 teamer, YAHOO!, h2h, 10×10 cats, 32 inning min on the pitching side…. I have a deep offense BTW….. (that sounded dirty)

I get: KERSHAW, Aramis, Alfonso Soriano, and Benoit

I give: Giancarlo, Aaron Hill, Chase Headley

I’m no longer on the Giancarlo Bandwagon, sorry, in a 10x10cat league? ughh…. the DL time, the solo shots, i just couldnt take it anymore (HR barrage coming soon i’m sure), aaron hill? I have howie K, who knows with Hill, could mash for an entire half of BB or could get hurt again…. and chase headley (sigh), eff him, was the main piece when I dealt AGON/COBB/HOLLAND earlier on in the year. I’m done with him. My main objective, get that ace, KERSHAW & aramis is a better fill in than Headley, Soriano’s been suprisingly hot/decent lately and might be headed back to the House that Ruth Built, and Benoit? fuck it, i’m a closer whore in this league.

    Yovani Gallardo – S – Brewers
FOX Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi reports that the Diamondbacks and Brewers “are in the midst of ongoing discussions” about Yovani Gallardo, John Axford, Jim Henderson and Francisco Rodriguez.
Morosi says that no deal appears “close or imminent” at the moment. The D’Backs have a need both in their rotation and in the bullpen and appear to want to package Gallardo and one of the Brewers’ relievers. Despite Gallardo’s struggles this season, it would likely require a pretty nice package, but the D’Backs can afford it with their deep farm system.

Sup Grey. I’m thinking of dangling Kimbrel to try to get 2 lesser value closers to beef up saves. Would you trade your Kimbrel for your choice of any 2: Wilhelmsen, Koji, Benoit, KRod? I’m thinking Wilhelmsen Koji might not be bad. Looks like Wilhelmsen is back, and Koji can probably run away with this gig.

Trying to stir things up. See any point to trading JUpton, Moreland, and Minor for Pedroia (or Kinsler), Rizzo, and Anibal? I suffer a bit at OF but I can pickup Blanks. We start 2 at each IF, and I’m relatively weak at 1B (Yonder, Moreland, LaRoche, Ike) and 2B (Cano and Rutledge). Was even thinking of offering the trade without the pitchers. Thoughts on both?

Craig costs $13, and Longo $31. Moggy costs $57 and Segura $10. Prado and Blanks were just kinda throw ins really. I can justify keeping Miggy again next year in a league that size, and was thrilled to get Segura at his price.

H2H league with your standard categories plus hits, total bases, double, OPS, CG, SO, K/BB (where Latos is pretty valuable) and Losses (where Latos is also pretty valuable).

@Grey: That Kips homer knocked out Gordon, who I just traded away today and it passed. Do I ask to take him back since it’s a friends league or let the chips fall where they may? I hate morals.

@Fungazi: what does that have anything to do with morals? It’s not like he hit the wall, you were the only one who knew about it, THEN you traded him. It’s just bad luck that now happens to the trade partner, not you. In football a couple of years back i traded NY giants steve smith (this is when he was good) for darren sproles in a league that gives equal pts for return yardage. At the time they both were scoring the same amount of fantasy pts per week. 2 days after i traded smith he tore his pectoral muscle at practice and missed rest of season. I’m not some evil genius there, but it almost looks like it.

I’ve always liked Garza. When healthy. I haven’t seen him pitch for awhile. I forgot about how tall he is. 6’4″ and long arms. There’s a lot of tilt on that fastball. It’s on a heavy downward plane. He kind of cuts it. Always runs away from left-handers and buries in on right-handers. The breaking ball is 12-6. Almost like a Wainright mix. If I were a GM looking for an arm, I’d be going there rather than to Nolasco.

        @Grey:

Probably not on their shopping list. I could definitely see the Giants buying him though. Great night for baseball here. Get yourself up to Oaktown, Albright. I’ll style you out.

          @OaktownSteve:

Hey Oaktown, what’s the deal with Yoenis? Is he looking bad, or just unlucky? His K rate is way up, which is not good.

But his BABIP is about 70 points lower than his career average.

            @Grey’s Goatee:

He’s pressing, I think. Chases breaking stuff down. Hasn’t barreled much up lately. Last year I think was on the high end for him BA wise. He has hit a bunch of homers even in a down half so far. There’s probably a hot streak coming. Good guy to own second half I think but you’ll need to be patient. When it comes it’s going to come in bunches. .265 and 17 homers with some other counters second half?

              @OaktownSteve:

Thanks for the insight. And yes, I remember very well that he’s the kind of player that can carry your team in the second half. Then again……so is a guy like Pedro Alvarez. But Yoenis reminds me in many ways of Jose Bautista. When they’re hot, they’re as hot as the sun. But when they’re pressing, it ain’t pretty.

Here’s to hoping there’s a hot streak coming up soon.

Prezz and Grey want to rename me in here, the days are getting hotter and the blood begins to boil. Restlessness is replaced by rage and time becomes a countdown to self destruction. You can call it hate but it’s really a firm grip on reality, an emotional awakening of the third eye, for when the time comes you will see the reality behind the veil of modern society……fuck E$PN

1.arcia or quentin just for tomorrow? Burnett’s coming back sooner than i thought so I’ll pick up Wandy to DL stash as he is the best DL stash open in that league.
    2. With this offense, when Gyorko comes back i’ll need to drop somebody. I’ve been trying to move Dom brown/rollins or possibly myers/rollins to a team in need at SS (10 team league) even the guy rocking cozart as a starter! (10 team) wouldn’t bite. It’s his first year at baseball and he knows how much i kick his ass at poker and fantasy football so he might think I’ve got some sneaky angle so he’s just refusing it. Anywho, who gets dropped, i’m thinking rollins.
    sal perez
    fielder
    hill/gyorko
    franklin/rollins
    wright
    a-gon
    mcutchen
    a-jax
2 utils these guys alternate at this spot daily
    machado
    choo
    dom brown
    myers
raj davis (possibly could turn into l.martin, pretty much steal only spot here)

      1. Arcia 2. I’d drop Gyorko before Rollins

      • goodfold2 says:
        (link)

@Grey: is this more because of how insanely hot rollins got 2nd half last year, because he’s simply better than gyorko, or because with gyorko i would only have 1 ss, but with rollins i would still have 2 ss’s and 2 2b’s? Arcia it is, even though Hitter T likes Quentin more, probably because of @BOS.
